The Pessimists Guide to the Miami Dolphins 2025 Season

Last week I gave you the positives, unfortunately for you guys who actually are optimistic about this season, you might want to skip this one! Realistically, I feel there is a greater chance this team has an unsuccessful season. We went into the draft with an awful lot of holes, and came out with many of the same holes. If you felt we needed only one 2nd tier OG and about 20 DT’s, drafted and undrafted, than you should feel like we nailed this draft. If you thought we needed 2 quality OL, a pass rushing DT/DE and possibly a NT too, two CB’s because Jalen Ramsey and Mike McDaniel don’t get along, and we don’t have a starter on the roster, and potentially a starting safety, this wasn’t your draft. In addition, if you felt we needed to have a better draft than our division rivals, well, we didn’t. Each team in our division, including the Buffalo Bills who own us, the New England Patriots who we have been owning, and also the NY Jets who we’ve been having our way with in recent years, ALL drafted better than we do, they have more cap space and better rosters than we do.

Three more negatives for you, Chris Grier is still the GM, Mike McDaniel is still the Head Coach, and Tua Tagovailoa is still the starting QB. You can make it four if you want to add that Stephen Ross still is the majority owner of the team. We had 10 picks going into the 2025 NFL Draft but came away with only 8 players. With Chris Grier as GM, it’s a necessary annual ritual to trade up and waste a pick or two doing so. This draft we traded up in RD 2 from pick #48 to pick #37 to take OG Jonah Savaiinaea, (Jo-nuh) (Sah-vai-uh-nigh-uh). Grier gave up our 2025 3rd RD pick in order to snare the big Samoan. He also traded away a 2025 4th RD pick (#116) for a 2026 3rd RD Pick from the Texans. Next year will be a strong QB class, so having that extra 3rd RD pick might come in handy.

I think we did well with the Kenneth Grant pick, he should be fun to watch, and Jonah Savaiinaea might work out at OG but I really wanted 2 OL in this draft. We seem to get bit by the injury bug every season on the O-line, and next on the depth chart is LT Ryan Hayes, LG Jackson Carman, C Andrew Myer, RG Liam Eichenberg and RT Larry Borom. If you feel confident with the depth there, God Bless you, you truly are an optimistic person. We brought in a lot of big bodies that everyone seems lit about, but it’s not all that different from what we did last season. We brought in lots of bodies, signed a host of 1 year contract guys and once again I stress big time, we got super lucky that 38 year old Calais Campbell was still around and decided to play here. This season we drafted Kenny Grant in RD 1, Jordan Phillips in RD 5, Zeek Biggers in RD 7, and maybe 10 other DT’s as UDFA’s. Again, lots of bodies, and I know some of you think we got a draft steal in Jordan Phillips. Heck, maybe we ddi, but will Mike McDaniel actually let him get playing time? Same goes for RB Ollie Gordon in the 6th RD. Ooooh, we got a BIG BACK! Yeah, we frigging traded up in last year’s draft, forfeiting a very valuable 2025 3rd RD pick to draft RB Jaylen Wright in RD 4. Sweet move Chris, love it! Mike McDaniel can only manage to find 67 carries for the guy we traded away a future 3rd Pick for. What on earth makes you believe he’s going to let a 6th RD pick see the field?

Now on to the $212M wonder, our QB Tua Tagovailoa. We got him a Samoan OG who has only blocked for Samoan QB’s! That oughta fix the O-line! Maybe we can clone him and he can play all 5 spots! Will this potentially help Tua play well against good teams? Will we belong on the same playing field as the Buffalo Bills and QB Josh Allen who is 8-1 against Tua, which would then make Tua 1-8 against Josh Allen. If that seems ugly, Allen has 23 passing TD’s, Tua 9. Allen has 5 INT’s, Tua has 10 INT’s. Josh Allen has a 106.9 rating. Tua 80.5. I see Dolphins fans on Twitter talking sh*t about Josh Allen and pontificating the greatness of Tua every day. These delusional imbeciles are clueless and no more fan than any Dolphins fan with their heads screwed on correctly. I root for the team, not specifically for one deficient player who can’t stay on the field and when he does, fails to compete against better teams and doesn’t rise to the level of the competition or the importance of the game. These are facts, not opinions, it’s been proven time and time again.

Yes, some of you are excited about 5th RD pick CB Jason Marshall. It’s actually possible he could start for us, because Jalen Ramsey and HC Mike McDaniel don’t see eye to eye, or at least that’s how it’s been reported. Either way, we gave Ramsey a pay raise just 6 months ago, and now we need to take a loss on either trading him or outright cutting him. Maybe UDFA from 2025 Storm Duck starts. Or, maybe we spend a good amount of cap space on young Asante Samuel Jr. who is still available due to a shoulder injury. That might actually be a good move except we know he’ll stay injured if we pick him up and pay him, right? At Safety, we picked up 2 safeties in FA that could potentially start. SS Ifeatua Melifonwu and FS Ashtyn Davis. Both have started, but neither has started much over the last 3 seasons, Melifonwu has 10 starts in 51 games and Ashtyn Davis has 6 starts in 51 games. Maybe we’ll get a combo of Melifonwu, Davis, Dante Trader Jr. who we drafted in RD 5, and Patrick Mcmorris who we drafted last season in RD 6. Maybe it will all work out.

At OLB, we have Chop Robinson returning from a successful rookie campaign. We also have 2 guys who unfortunately can’t stay on th field and stay healthy. OLB Jaelan Phillips is truly a courageous fella, he has rehabbed with such fervor each of the last 2 seasons, one from an achilles tear, and then last season from a friendly fire incident where he got hit by his own teammate helmet to knee. 3 seasons in a row, 3 rehabs. OLB Bradley Chubb missed the entire season last year so one would think he should be ready to go for 2025. We also have Quinton Bell, Mo Kamara, and Cameron Goode. Unfortunately, once you get past the first 3, as with most teams, it really falls off quality wise. If Phillips, Chubb and Chop all stay healthy and play well, this defense could be legit, especially if a few of the horde of defensive tackles we brought in can play as well, but then again what about that secondary? UGH!

What about the rest of the offense not named Tua Tagovailoa? RB Devon Achane is an exciting playmaker who will probably see more touches than anyone else on the offense. He’ll probably see more passes come his way, maybe less carries though if we decide to actually use RB’s Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon in pursuit of not being such a soft serve type of team. Do we actually vote WR Tyreek Hill in as Captain again? Hill loves to troll on social media but at least this team in his latest trolling, he got it right, and omitted QB Tua Tagovailoa from his top 5. WR Jaylen Waddle has shown he can be a #1 WR but had a down year and basically has been second fiddle since Tyreek Hill arrived. TE Jonnu Smith was fantastic last season and was probably our best offensive player along with De”Von Achane. We picked up a TE as an UDFA that BBMike really likes, Jalin Conyer, He’s stuck behind projects Tanner and Hayden Rucci, as well as blocking TE Pharoah Brown who we scooped up in FA. Brown should help in the blocking game, and add a few catches too, Anyone think we need another Jalen/Jaylen, Jaelan/Jalin? I really liked the addition of WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, the WR corps desperately needed a bigger bodies receiver who is physical and is a huge red zone threat. Westbrook-Ikhine had 9 TD receptions last season, which is one more than the combination of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. I also like slot WR Malik Washington in this offense and in the return game. Will backup QB’s Zach Wilson or newly drafted Quinn Ewers see the field this season? That’s almost a certainty with “The Frajeel”, it’s just a matter of when, and for how long.

After three transactions in three days, Joe Cardona is now the front-runner for the role as the only long snapper on the roster. The former Patriot has played in 160 games since being selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Miami signed Cardona on Friday and released rookie free agent Kneeland Hibbett on Saturday.

Yep, agree! I’m actually excited about the draft picks and the UDFA’s. The team leaders just need to do the right thing and keep based on talent, not familiarity. Many are gone now, but years too late, like Cracraft, Wilson Jr., Berrios, Mostert, Smythe, a few defensive players too. If Eazy E makes the squad again and UDFA’s Wease Jr. or Armstrong don’t, I’ll lose it. Give me potential over proven non-commodity.

The Dolphins have signed CB Kendall Sheffield Played 6 games for the Jets in 2024, has started 20 games in his five-year NFL career, all with the Falcons in 2019 & 2020

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Pro Football Focus gave him a grade of 46.7, ranking him 198th of 222 cornerbacks last season. Although Sheffield ranked 18th in run defense, his coverage grade (39.3) ranked 205th.

Right now we have some scrub we signed who used to play for the Jets and was ranked 198 out 222, we have Storm Duck and UDFA, Kader Kohou in the slot and nickel and 2 journeymen safeties who started 9 games total over the last 3 years. Do you think Miami is the Magic Kingdom and all of a sudden all these players will be good now? You’re just willing to give the benefit of the doubt with anything and everything we do, I prefer to take everything on face value.

well respected Eric Smith has a PRE-DRAFT video out comparing our team from year to year since 2019 and he’s got an improvement from just about every position group, even safety, don’t forget Poyer was awful last year and Holland didn’t seem to be all there

  19. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I see FS Justin Simmons is still available via FA. Spotrac has his market value at roughly $5.8M/year(!). Last year was the first time since 2018 that he didn’t get named to either the Pro-Bowl (2 times) or AP-2 (All-Pro second team, 4 times)… he was learning a new system in Atlanta under Jimmy Lake.

Simmons is a vet of the Ed Donatell (the right-hand man of Vic Fangio) Defense, where he flourished in Denver.

IMO, if you can flourish in Donatell’s (or Fangio’s) Defense, you’ve got your stuff together with all of the intricate assignments and details. From peeling off from man coverage into zone, and knowing when to keep man-to-man, I think Simmons could work out well for us in Weaver’s system.

Jimmy Lake (who???) was Simmons’ DC last season in Atlanta, and he was one and done… he’s back with the Rams as a senior defensive assistant…. a HUGE step down from ’23 when he was the Rams’ assistant HC to Sean McVay.

Last time Simmons made the Pro-Bowl and/or AP-2? 2023 (BOTH Pro-Bowl and AP-2), the year before he went to Atlanta (this past season) where Jimmy “mistake by the” Lake made him look a fool.

Sign Simmons, and reap the benefits of a perennial 2nd team All-Pro (except for last season).

  24. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think watching the building of a team is one of my favorite parts of sports. Maybe it’s because winning has become a unicorn for this organization, but I’ve gotten to watch a lot of building.

I think it’s okay to look at guys we bring in and think there isn’t much potential and to also look at it and feel it’s going to get better. This team has worn down some of its fans to the point they have no faith in much they do. I think that’s pretty natural for some. Ya know how you change that? Win.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s about time we started building. What we’ve done the last few years has ramifications and isn’t sustainable. Now we finally pulled back and stopped giving away draft picks, except of course for the 3rd RD we traded up with. 😉

You DO THAT young man. Don’t just say it.

TWO years ago he was a beast with over 1000 yards after contact and 68 forced missed tackles. Last year that dropped off substantially to 614 and 41 missed tackles.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Speculation is that because we have a home game in Spain in week 11 that our bye week will be in week 12. If so I think that is great news. I am tired of getting the bye week in week 6 (or week ONE like we did one year because of the hurricane)

week 12 is perfect for getting dinged up players some rest to make a run at the second half of the season and into the playoffs. (I deleted 3 versions of that sentence because I find it so unlikely)

      COMING IN A STEP AHEAD

Looking at things from the outside, the fit for Ewers in Miami couldn’t be better.

He comes from a Texas system that is near identical to what the Dolphins run, so he will be familiar in that regard.

He also has the traits Mike McDaniel likes in a quarterback — the ability to throw with accuracy and anticipation.

“I think all of us wish he he would have gotten drafted higher,” Sarkisian said. “But at the end of the day if I could have picked a place that I think is a great fit for him, I think Miami is a great fit. You know systematically what coach McDaniel does is, if not exactly the same, very similar to what we do.”

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

      DOLPHINS TAKE IN FULL PICTURE

A quote from Dolphins GM Chris Grier after the draft really said it best in terms of summarizing all that Ewers has been through and what the Dolphins saw in him.

“Sark really likes and is high on him and (talked) about him playing through the injuries this year, which affected his play a little bit,” Grier said. “He talked about his toughness, his mental toughness, of pushing through with the injuries, the expectations, all the pressure, you know, with (Arch) Manning there coming in. He loved his competitiveness and how he plays and how his teammates respond to him.”

In the end, there really isn’t much more the Dolphins could have expected in terms of intangibles from a seventh-round quarterback and it will be interesting to see if him getting the time and development he needs will result in a player who should have been selected earlier.

  33. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Ewers’ lower body and footwork reminds me of a young Peyton Manning. He also looks like an upper body thrower. I’m not a fan of the arm motion. It seems slow, and he starts it low. His accuracy and anticipation are good. I can see why somebody said he’d be a fit for how MM runs his offense. He’s a timing thrower and can put it into spots or areas. I’m a little more concerned about how he performs off script. He’s not gonna get the protection he got at Texas.

  34. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,

Yes, but your point is taken, but it’s the motion that just seems slow. I’m nitpicking, but I like guys to have that ball up high and tight and ready to rip. Harder to strip and quicker to get out. All that said; some guys just get it done the way they do it.

    ____________

Miami7 gave us a comprehensive list!

They need two STARTING caliber Safeties (not one on the roster, but Grier’s the smartest guy in the room and assures us we’re all set).

They need two STARTING caliber CB’s (not possible – see above) and if Grier thinks Cam Smith is the answer to anything other than Dolphins BUST trivia he’s somehow even worse than people think.

They need another viable OG cause the depth STINKS. See same for Tackles…

They need DT depth – unless 5th-6th-7th Rd guys are actually NFL caliber (not often) but Grier’s smarter than any other GM so we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

They need DE/LB rotational depth (and there sat Ogbah, but…?), unless Kamara rises from……………. distinction extinction.

They need TE depth. Julian Hill is hovering around Cam Smith, Tindall territory, but the Dolphins love his ‘potential’ that manifests itself in drops, blown blocking assignments & penalties.

They need RB help. Maybe Gordon works out? 6th Rd. pick success rate indicates it certainly should. Mattison is a nothing enigma of empty promise. No idea what Wright might even be and as good as Achane might be, he is taking too many carries and isn’t really built for workhorse duties. We lose him for any amount of time & the cupboards bare (as far as KNOWING anything at all about what the room holds).

    They need a Head Coach.

    They need a GM.

    They need a new owner.

Grier does find a few here & there in UDFA….bedrock core of any Championship caliber organization right there. Props

Tyreek’s done after this year – Chubb after this year – possibly Phillips – possibly AJax – the secondary is a trainwreck in all 4 spots – 2026 the Q…………..ahhh…..next….

I’ll leave Tua outta this cause the stable around him isn’t anywhere close to good enough to carry him.

They don’t have the $ to get anybody of definitive value in FA – though ANYTHING would be an upgrade over the possibility of Cam Smith actually starting an NFL game. The fact the Dolphins carry that clown on the roster shows how inept they are evaluating talent. Did somebody mention Channing Tindall?

They’re fine. They ‘might’ be able to sneeeeeak in another distant 2nd place finish in the East & hold some semblance of myopic fan belief until December when the wheels fall completely off again. MIGHT? Then another draft of too many needs and not enough picks, and maybe Grier trades away more roster devoid picks to move up & get that one unquestionably undeniable talent?“

The Dolphins make me cry”, but Zeppelin said it best…”The Song Remains the Same”.

  41. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    I agree with this comment…

    _____

Miami Dolphins search for a cornerback makes it critical they make amends with Jalen Ramsey

The fact the Dolphins current starters will come down to rookie Jason Marshall, Cam Smith, or Storm Duck only puts more pressure on the Dolphins to find a way to get Ramsey back in the fold, and mend the bridge they created. Ideally, they will do so without adding more money to his contract.

The situation with Ramsey as well as the open cornerback spot is clearly on the shoulders of Chris Grier. His mismanaging the position for years has become a problem. He has overspent to keep players happy only to lose production the following year, or lose the player all together. Now, he is in a similar position with Ramsey.

The fact Douglas turned up his nose to the Dolphins offer is another problem in and of itself. What did the Dolphins offer and what is it Douglas wants? At this stage of free agency, contracts typically are not huge.

  42. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Hope for me? I’d love to see our front 7 on D ball out minimizing the reliance/need on the DBs.

Philly did it in the SB this year and it was fabulous to watch! My kind of football…lol

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The Ramsey situation still amazes me. If someone could explain why Grier felt the necessity to come out and tell the world the Dolphins and Ramsey mutually agreed to part ways. What was the reason? Even if that’s exactly what happened, they had a conversation and it went south, why make it public knowledge?

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So maybe after ’25 is over, at least we’ll potentially have our starting QB on the roster in Ewers. One plus. No more “Frajeel”, no more Grier and no more MM. Let’s try and get it right this time please . . .

The OG depth doesn’t stink. I think Borom is an upgrade over Jones and Eich. Backups are backups, that’s why they are not starting elsewhere. We actually happen to have 2 with a lot of starting experience. I do worry about our OT depth though more than OG depth. Kion Smith has been a very good backup but he’s all we got as far as quality backup OT.

DT depth is a wait and see. We have a solid 4.

DE/Edge with everyone healthy is going to be the deepest it’s been in a very long time.

TE room is better than last year with upgrading to Pharoh Brown over Smythe. Julian Hill is no where near the bust of Tindall. Then we added Conyers to go with Rucci who is a stud blocker.

RB room is solid. Wish they would have gotten Damian Martinez instead but Gordon is no slouch.

Don’t know where they get Jackson possibly is gone next year. He’s under contract through 2026.

What I agree on most is “They need a Head Coach”. Yes, they need a true leader.

Krishna, I gotcha. There is plenty to be worried about though all we can do is see how it all pans out. I do have faith in Weaver when it comes to the D. We have plenty of weapons on offense.

IMO, this season will all come down to injuries and the play of the OL much like 2024.

Nicolas Cage playing John Madden? I’m a fan of Cage’s quirkiness, not sure this is going to work.

It’s nice our Thursday game is in Buffalo. Might as well couple our Thursday game with one of our two automatic losses to the Bills.

I tend towards verbosity. When you spend 10 minutes crafting a comment and accidentally delete it with the stroke of a key that isn’t labeled ‘automatically delete f^cking everything’, it’s pretty frustrating. Removing our ability to GIF sucks too. Half the reason I comment less is because WordPress has taken a lot of the fun out of it. The other half is because I’m a Dolphins fan.

I usually check our bye and the teams we play off of the bye and Thursday mini byes, and vice versa with our opponents, but this year not really into it

if we’re good enough we’ll win games despite the schedule, if not we won’t

  68. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Early look it seems every tough game Bills have is a home game.

Week 1 Ravens at Bills, Week 9 Chiefs at Bills, Week 17 Eagles at Bills

Not sure if they have the Bengals at home or not. They don’t have that many tough games, “Sharp Football Analysis rates the Buffalo Bills’ schedule as the fifth easiest in the NFL for 2025.”

  69. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

looking at some of those games

I tend to think the colts might have a top 5 draft pick next season

Given their history of tanking for QBs they may even go “ass for Archie” next season

Great to get a road start against a team that might be is gonna be bad

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

and they aren’t the only bad team on our schedule – the saints may have the #1 pick next year

the jets might be in full rebuild mode – but I expect them to play is tpugh

the panthers look like a team on the rise 1 but that rose might be modest

the browns had the 2 pick for a reason this year

I’m kind of expecting the Steelers to have the first losing season of Tomlins career

and I think the. Whales will have a great offense and a putrid defense

  70. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

other side of that coin is that expect the ravens and bills to be good and that’s 3 games

I don’t really know what to expect from the Bucs, Chargers or commanders

but those are playoff teams last year and we were not – so….not the lighter part of the schedule

Falcons are kind of a head scratcher to me

patriots had a great offseason but I think the step up they need to make might be bigger than most people are saying

  71. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So we have two thursday night games as well as a game in Madrid?

I guess with the black friday games, 3 thanksgiving games, probably 2 or 3 christmas games this year on thursday, a lot of teams will have multiple off-schedule games.

I remember when Monday night games where an event no matter who was playing. Now it’s just another damned day of football that I don’t even bother to watch half the time.

  72. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  74. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

  75. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I see a some conflicts between the scheduled posted above. (expected as the schedule hasn’t been released yet!) but some are saying the Cincy game will be a Sunday night game and some are saying it will be a day game.

I will bet $100.00 right not that the game will not be a night game. Even if it is scheduled for Sunday night now, it will be flexed to the day time.

  76. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

that TNF football in Buffalo is the leagues way of telling us to go fuck ourselves

short week, on the road, prime time, nfl contender on a team we haven’t beaten much – that’s just miserable

  77. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Madrid is a 6 hour time difference from the Eastern time so I’m guessing it will be a 3pm local game with a 9am showing in Florida.

  78. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I absolutely HATE Thursday night games. I wish there were zero for any team. They are bad for player safety, but the league is all about the money and not player safety (lying sacks of shit!)

Now since 2023 the league can assign up to TWO Thursday night games to teams because they fucked Amazon the first couple of years with the dregs games nobody cared about.

I hope the leaked schedules above are wrong!

At least you can still watch the game on amazon even if you don’t have a prime account. The first season I couldn’t see any TN games because I am 6 miles outside the “local” area so I can’t get the simulcast on CBS
