Secondary concerns?

Even a casual Miami Dolphins can see the team hasn’t really fortified the secondary in this 2025 off season. Sure, we drafted a CB and a S in RD 5, but going into the draft knowing well you were parting ways with one of your starting CB’s, and a good one, your best (CB Jalen Ramsey”, I don’t care if you’re the mostest optimistic fan, you see the Dolphins are just hoping against odds that a collection of late RD draft picks and undrafted free agents can form a legitimate secondary. Throw in the fact that both safeties we added haven’t been starters the last 3 seasons, except for a spot starts, 10 of 51 for Melifonwu, and 6 of 51 for Davis. There will be competition, and according to DC Anthony Weaver, “A lot of players with chips on their shoulders”. Much like the D-line last year, we were really short there but DE/DT Calais Campbell luckily chose us. Is it possible we get lucky and another veteran CB chooses us and starts? Absolutely, and that could be a long in the tooth veteran like Stephon Gilmore or Rasul Douglas, or maybe a younger guy who is currently coming off shoulder surgery in CB Asante Samuel Jr.

Who would be the likely starters right now? While this might be a futile exercise because nothing has happened yet, you could guess that Cam Smith and Storm Duck would be the outside CB’s and Kader Kohou would be the in the slot. Who would be the competition? There’s a whole bunch of guys, including players that have been here in CB’s Jason Maitre, Ethan Bonner, and Isaiah Johnson, Jason Marshall who was a 5th RD draft pick this year, and then a veteran we recently picked up Kendall Sheffield, as well as nickel corner Artie Burns who we signed earlier this year. Add in CB’s Ethan Robinson, BJ Adams and John Saunders, who were undrafted and signed by the Dolphins. So lots of hungry mouths, but many of them won’t make the cut, and even the ones that do may not necessarily be starting CB material, but they will be starting for us anyway if we don’t upgrade.

At safety, there will also be some healthy competition with the guys I mentioned, probable starters Ifeatu Melifonwu at SS, and then Ashtyn Davis at FS. 2024 Draftee S Patrick McMorris and this years 5th RD pick S Dante Trader will also be in the mix, as well as Elijah Campbell and UDFA Jordan Colbert. McMorris looked very good in the preseason games last year, and Elijah Campbell although he’s also a very valuable St’s guy, Campbell will be in the mix at S. There might even be a little bit of a rotation or situational use for some of these guys, but they may still see the field on certain downs and distances. Time will tell there. I like the safety situation better than the CB’s, for whatever that’s worth.

In a usual season, I’d be angry about this, but I don’t think this team has the chops on either side of the ball to compete with the best teams, and therefore, I have no anger about the neglect. GM Chris Grier has been piecing together this team for the last 2 seasons, mostly ignored the D0line, picking up a bunch of rotational players and then of course lucking out into getting excellent production form a 38 year old veteran DL in Calais Campbell. As I mentioned, maybe Grier gets bailed out again by some CB we pick up or trade for when Jalen Ramsey is either traded or cut outright. Everyone is mostly excited about the D-line and our new draftees Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips, and Zeek Biggers along with some of the players and UDFA’s we also signed including Matt Dickerson and Alex Huntley. Add in the return of two potentially important pass rushing LB’s Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb, along with sophomore pass rusher Chop Robinson who flashed in his rookie season, you can see why fans are enthusiastic about the front 7. DT’s Grant and Phillips could (should) see lots of playing time, and our inside LB while unspectacular, is pretty darn solid. ILB’s Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson will probably start with nice depth from ILB’s Willie Gay and K.J. Britt.

All that looks promising, and if OLB’s Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips are healthy all season and producing, even I can admit that the secondary shouldn’t be as much of an issue, except when you play the best teams, and then those weaknesses are exposed again and again. As many of you know here, I think the offense will have to carry this team. That’s not to say this defense could turn out to be a good unit, but an awful lot of good things need to happen, and to be fair, when does that happen for us Dolphins fans? Are we really going to get buy with 5 guys in the secondary who probably wouldn’t start for any other team in the NFL, let alone our own division? We need this offense to hum, perhaps not to the same high level of 2023 where we were 2nd in the NFL scoring 29.2 PPG, but not too far off of that. I understand as much as the next guy that sometimes competition brings out the best in some players and that sometimes players rise to the occasion and win jobs they weren’t expected to get. On the other hand, the best of the worst doesn’t always translate into success against the rest of the NFL. We’re going to need this offense to be great again (MTOGA?). If that happens, maybe it’s OK that the concern for our defensive backfield is a secondary one.

Thanks, MikeE. It sure sucks that our DB situation has to be a wait and see. Even if they bring in Asante Samuel or Douglas, it will still be a wait and see.

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The College Football Playoff will go to a more straightforward way of filling the bracket next season, placing teams strictly on where they are ranked instead of moving pieces around to reward conference champions.

LOL, completely left out a paragraph about the safety competition. Just put it in. 🤣

  4. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

There are several good teams who still need to upgrade at starting CB other than the Rams. The Chargers, Ravens, Vikings, 49er’s, Seahawks and Raiders all need to upgrade at CB. All of them, including the Rams have the cap space except for maybe the Ravens.

I could see Pete Carroll/Raiders maybe making an offer. Carroll is in win now mode.

Just in case anyone is thinking that I don’t get the fact that “Happy” and “Memorial Day” don’t really belong together, it’s just a common phrase used with no malice or disregard for the seriousness or mournfulness of the situation. Hope that clears that up!

    @DavidFurones_

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Dolphins are engaged with multiple teams on a Jalen Ramsey trade with nothing imminent. Fowler named the L.A. Rams, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders as potential suitors.

    Mike E,

Another good write, and about something I’m quite passionate: our Secondary. As your resident DB enthusiast, I am absolutely shocked we didn’t address our Secondary in the Draft until the 5th round.

There were some really solid DBs we passed on, by trading up for Big Jonah.

At this point in time, I’d seriously kick the tires on Xavien Howard. He’s either going to fit as our best CB or our best Safety… and he cannot dictate BIG $$$ anymore. He just may be to our Secondary this year as Calais was to our D-Line last year.

And let’s face it: X won’t be a ‘progress-stopper’ for anybody this season (especially as a Safety), as we’re going to be drafting a DB early in the ’26 Draft.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Just sign him as a Safety, the more I think about it. X playing with the ball in FRONT of him all day? I all but guarantee he’ll nab at least 5 INTs this season.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We signed two safeties in FA as well. We’re reportedly high on McMorris. We have 19 DBs competing for probably 11-12 spots.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        QUALITY, Bro… not quantity.

Once upon a time, I thought it a GRAND idea to put 8 MCs on one track. Problem with that? The weakest of the bunch dumbed down the track. I should have gone with quality over quantity.

And honestly, I don’t see much ‘quality’ with any of the 19 DBs we have competing for 11-12 spots.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

NOT trying to be dismissive of you whatsoever, Tim. I’m just sayin’…

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dude, I get it! We’re looking at a lot of young players.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, we are looking at a lot of young players. And most (ALL) of them aren’t very accomplished… not even really at the collegiate level.

That’s not to say somebody can’t come out of nowhere and become a star, but the odds are very much against us, statistically.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Now add a seasoned vet to the fold and see what happens. The level of competition goes up. The young bucks want to emulate the seasoned vet. The seasoned vet can offer advice to the young bucks (tricks of the trade).

It’s a funny thing, all off-season y’all love mid round picks and hate trading them. Then when we pick players in those rounds it’s insignificant. 😂

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You want those picks to fill out the roster and maybe hit on a few and develop them. I don’t think anyone wants a team that has starters at every position from RD’s 5,6 and 7 though. I know you’re partly kidding, but that 3rd pick we traded to get Jonah hurts. We also didn’t need to trade our 3rd RD pick for Wright last season and then not use him.

There were a few CB’s, S’s and OG’s I wouldn’t mind being here, but Grier casually disposes of those picks so freely all too often. S Kevin Winston Jr., S Xavier Watts, CB Jacob Parrish, G Wyatt Milum, OT Charles Grant.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we weren’t drafting Savaiinaea with our 2nd rd pick without trading up, by everything I’ve seen he’s a much better prospect, than any other OG on the board

so you’d rather have a lessor OG and a DB than Savaiinaea?

it’s ok, if that’s what your preference was, but that’s all it is, is your preference

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

ok, we’ll see how he plays this year

my comment was more of a hypothetical, assuming Savaiinaea is the player many think he is, for arguments sake let’s say he’s Robert Hunt, would you rather have that player or a lesser OG available at our original 2nd and a DB with our pick in the 3rd?

forget Grant this year, his upper body needs to be more NFL ready

Tua sucks, he can’t get it done without help around him, well duh! He can’t block for himself and he can’t catch his own downfield passes

Tua ranked as #26 in most check-down % (9.2%) thrown by QBs last season. #1 was Russell Wilson in most check-down % (19.2%), and #32 was Caleb Williams (7.1%).

Thus, Tua did NOT “Check-down Chad” his way to the best completion % in the NFL last season as some claim.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Mike E is NOT going to like this fact! LOL 😆

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Williams got sacked so often, because he didn’t check down

not sure what their definition of a check down is, but those stats can be skewed

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I hear ya on skewed stats… and sometimes a QB just needs to throw the ball away, instead of a ‘hospital ball’ that gets somebody killed.

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

While I have said multiple times that Grant needs to develop an NFL body, he’s got the building blocks. He is soft, physically. It always makes me wonder about a guy’s dedication, but it might also be as simple as his coach just wanted him as big as possible.

With his size and body, I can easily see him drop some weight and put on some muscle. He’s far from a finished product physically and in his play. I really wouldn’t mind if they just throw him in the middle and just let him learn how to handle NFL players. He’s not even a polished NT let alone as a pass rusher.

I like his potential a lot, but he’s gotta put in the work. I hope he does. Weaver has a diamond in the rough. Let’s see if he can develop him.

  18. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

No matter HOW once slices or dices it, Tua is a top-5 QB in the NFL… WHEN HEALTHY.

Therein lies the biggest problem with Tua: HEALTH

If Tua can’t stay healthy, he’s of no use to us. Availability is #1, no matter how good a player is.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

#5 whatever it’s a BS stat, until he can take the team under his wing and fly high, taking them where he hasn’t yet, he’s going to be a non elite

stats schmatz, win the big game, beat Buffalo and people will stop bitching about his performance

no more excuses Tua, you got paid, they showed you the money, now show us you deserved it

  19. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I recall how while Tua was 100% in the ’23 season (the only season he didn’t get injured), some were griping that he wasn’t able to run the ball like a Michael Vick or a Jalen Hurts.

Y’all REALLY wanted him to lose the muscle he put on for the sake of his own health, so that he could become a mobile/running QB. Guess what? That didn’t work out now, did it? I was AGAINST IT, being you don’t break something that isn’t broken.

Be careful what ya wish for.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What was broken was the play, and when the play broke down he was subpar

you wanna compete in the AFC your QB has to go off script

  20. Randy's avatar Randy says:

This offense was designed FOR Tua. He’s asked to throw to spots. Yes, he’s accurate, but he isn’t asked to put the ball on guys much. His WRs are expected to be where he’s throwing the ball. How many replays did we see of Tua letting the ball go, and his WR running into the spot and making the catch? That’s different than hitting a guy in stride or throwing it in a guy’s catch radius. It’s neither good or bad, but it is different.

The problem arose when teams figured out how to stop it…or basically what defense to play against it. Play umbrella, beat the crap out of the little WRs and don’t let them get to those spots. Pretty basic. Done. No adjustment. None…by Tua or MM. No running game to help….with MM never sticking with the running game, but teams have also shut down our passing game and put all the pressure on the running game.

Teams, I think, are getting back more to running to throw instead of the other way around.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

the OL was so bad we couldn’t run the ball, there has to be some fear from the running game or it’ll stay 7 or less in the box

we have a 3rd WR now, hopefully a half second more to throw will open things up

you can always setup coverage to stop the outside WRs, when that happens the other 3 eligible need to get open

  21. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M1,

LOL. Tua is nowhere near a top 5 QB in the NFL. My goodness. 12-15…sure.

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Randy, I agree with you on Grant. I don’t see him playing a huge snap count like Seiler. Something close to what he did at Michigan the last 2 years at around 500 snaps which would be close to 50%.

  23. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tua wasn’t Check Down Charlie, but we did throw a shit ton of WR screen passes it seemed like.

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The key to our season is blocking it and stopping it. We have the playmakers to score points.

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Grant playing more than 30 snaps a game will likely come down to what they do with him on expected passing downs

can he get pressure? Will he just be a run stuffer early in season?

I’d say a lot has to do with the depth around him too

I don’t really care how many snaps he plays as long as our DL is getting it done

But Randy, it wasn’t a blanket statement. I DID say “when healthy”… and it’s the TRUTH. However, being Tua has only gone one season playing all games, I spoke about his (lack of) availability.

If he’s unavailable, he’s of no help to us… I think you’d concur.

We cannot play “The Land of Make Believe” any longer: Tua has led the NFL in passer rating, passing yards, and now completion percentage… all in different seasons. I mean, you’d swear the guy really sucks… LOL.

He’s now one of the very few who have accomplished as much in NFL history, and the rest are now in Canton, Ohio.

  29. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

Nope, I got the “when healthy” part, but it doesn’t matter to me. I don’t value a QB on stats. They’re paid to win in today’s NFL. If Tua had terrible stats, but he was winning games for us, I’d be loving him. The reverse does nothing for me. We’re not losing in spite of Tua. He’s a big part of it.

  30. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Always thought of Griese as a game manager, that had good pocket pressence, he just did whatever it took without regards to his stats just win

after watching parts of some games recently he was pretty accurate for the time, given the bump and run

so yeah I agree with you Randy

  31. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

anyone else hear Waddle is going to be the #1 WR?

it’s supposed to open up the offense in that Tua won’t have to look at Hill first

the thought is with extra time to throw coupled with presnap reads Tua will be able to get thru his progressions easier

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I said before if this offense does not produce, it’s on MM. Though, now that I think about it more, it’s just as much on Tua. He knows the offense inside and out. He’s been in the league long enough to recognize defenses and what they are doing. He should be able to audible if he doesn’t see what he sees. That’s been a problem in the past. He just goes with the play even if he doesn’t like what he sees.

a couoke of scenarios in which our CBs don’t kill us

Kohou playing decent outside with Duck/Cam and Burns in the slot or Duck/Cam outside with Kohou in slot

getting pressure with 4 rushers would allow 7 in zone and give us a shot to get off the field on 3rd down

Chop and Phillips could provide that speed rush, resulting in quick throws

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

with no running game Achane was used a lot with quick short passes, resulting in low avg yards per catch and a 90% catch per target rate

expect that to be minimized this year, with Achane catching more passes deeper down field

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

They say Manning is going to stay in college through his senior year meaning he will be in the 2027 draft. If that is the case and Cade Klubnik is gone when we pick, then it’s hands down for me to take CB Jermod McCoy in the 1st round next year. The dude is just solid in his technique to go with his physical ability. His grades last year across the board were higher than any CB in this year’s draft. Superb press corner who is also very good in off man and zone.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I will admit, he did give up a TD to Jeremiah Smith in the college playoffs. That said, I think Jeremiah Smith could do that right now to starting CB’s in the NFL. Smith is a phenomenon.

  36. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If this offense doesn’t produce it’s on both MM and Tua. Defenses can sometimes take our receivers out of the game, so both MM and Tua have to figure out how to beat that. This 2 deep nonsense is just that, nonsense. You have to have an answer to everything and anything a defense employs. Run the ball down their throats and eventually those safeties will be forced to play up closer. Then when they come up, you beat them with play action and shots downfield.

  37. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

That’s been part of my problem with their choices of skill players. They seem to fit a certain way of playing. We all saw this offense sputter and get stuck last season and seemingly make no changes. Maybe part of that is because it’s what our talent dictates. Small and fast only gets you so far.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Another issue is sometimes you need a QB who can sling it with velocity and pace and squeeze it in and challenge the defense but Tua doesn’t really like to do that and it’s understandable because he doesn’t have that kind of arm. He prefers to throw to a spot where a player will be getting rid of the ball immediately. He doesn’t want to have the ball past 2 seconds because he might get hit and he doesn’t have the arm talent to see something and sling it

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

True but lots of QBs have been successful playing that way. Durability is his biggest issue.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  39. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not that I’m saying Ashtyn Davis is great or anything, but with more more limited opportunities, he has more INT’s (8) than Holland. Holland has more FF’s by 2, but they both have 4 FR’s. Holland has been used more as a blitzer and has 5.0 sacks compared to Davis, and also a lot more tackles, but that’s also because he’s played more.

    Ranked #139 by NFL.com

    Ranked #59 by CBS Sports

Ranked 12th out of OG’s from PFF, not including some of the top prospects at OT that may have also been drafted to play OG.

If we can all just admit, Grier sucks at playing the draft board, he just does, always has. We could have kept our 3rd RD pick and drafted Wyatt Milum who was ranked higher on most of these boards.

Anyway, Jonah’s average ranking over 10 sites was later than #60 with NFL.com being the latest at #139. Though, he was ranked as early as #32 by PFN.

It reminds me of Mason McCormick who was ranked from a late 3rd to late 7th by NFL.com at #246. The Steelers drafted him in the 4th at #119 and McCormick became a starter as a rookie for them and he was in the running for Rookie OL of the Year.

NFL.com was way off on McCormick and believe they will be with Jonah.

That said, you know BBM hates to trade away picks. BBM want more!

Would Jonah have been there if we stayed put? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? That’s where I am at.

I am glad we got him and hope he is our Mason McCormick or better.

Every Memorial Day the name Aaron Kent floods my mind.

I spent 15.5 years of my 26 years serving with the Marines. I know a good field Corpsman when I see one. Arron Kent was a badass and a true Devil Dog field Corpsman. The Marines he was with loved him and would literally die for him.

He had done 2 tours in Iraq. I was an order writer at the time in Millington, TN. He wanted to move cross country on his next set of orders from Camp Lejeune, NC to Bremerton, WA so he can be close to home in Portland, OR.

Money was tight and I told him I had to extend him into the next fiscal year when we had the money to move him across country.

This extension caused him to have to do a 3rd tour in Iraq where after a short time in country he was killed by an IED.

God Bless you Aaron Kent and may you RIP!

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL Mike! What we do know though is that Wyatt Milum was there (RD 3 Pick #89), Jaguars waited and got a really good player. He may not start this season because he’s behind two very good OG’s, Ezra Cleveland and Patrick Mekhari, but he was rated as good or better by most sites and the Jags didn’t trade up to get him. That’s probably because of need. Jags have two starting OL, Grier leaves gaping holes and then panics and trades away picks.

  45. Randy's avatar Randy says:

This is part of why draft “buzz” drives me nuts. Jonah was simply not a player worth trading away picks to get. It doesn’t…or shouldn’t…matter what other teams were doing. Who knows what’s true, but the bottom line for me is he simply wasn’t worth it. Even if I think other teams are interested…I still don’t need to waste picks to move up to get him. Do your evaluation and stick to it.

It’s over now, so I’m rooting for the kid. If he can work on his feet and balance, he’s got a chance to be okay. Grier has made a bunch of moves like this, so I just think it’s him. He gets jumpy.

  46. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,

I will. Nobody knows if he’s the player we wanted. He’s just the guy we made a move to get. 5 picks before they may have been targeting a completely different player. Funny how teams always say they “got their guy” after. I always shake my head at the idea that if they just get their guy it’s a good pick. Like it justifies it. But, isn’t every pick a team makes “their guy”? Why else would they take any player if he wasn’t their guy? Lol

For me, the discussion is about the draft moves not the player so much. I wouldn’t have picked Jonah, but I can see the potential. I don’t think it’s really high, but I can see him being a solid starter.

  49. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Mike E,

I was never high on Big Jonah to begin with, but like Randy said above, I’m rooting for the kid. We can only hope he can be our answer to losing Robert Hunt, and those are very large shoes to fill, IMO. NEVER would I have traded up for Big Jonah under the circumstances… just allow the Draft to come to you.

Wyatt Milum was my guy. He’s another big guy (320 pounds), and he’s a premium ZBS blocker who is very fleet-of-foot. I did quite a bit of research on Milum and felt he was going to be our pick for the O-Line. He didn’t allow a sack since 2021 as a freshman (only 2 sacks in his career, both came as a freshman), and was a four year starter! You can play him at LT and probably at either Guard position… but definitely at LG.

Jonah gave up 4 sacks last year alone in his junior season and isn’t nearly as savvy in the ZBS.

It’s just one of many head-scratching moves that Chris Grier makes every single Draft. With so many holes to fill, we really could have used our 3rd rounder on either a CB or S, for example.

  50. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    BBM,

RIP to Aaron Kent, Brother. That pained me to read and I’m so sorry for your loss. Like so many others, today is his to be honored, respected, and remembered for his selfless act of bravery.

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I never said I won’t be rooting for Jonah Savaiinaea, i just hate that we all accept Grier constantly throwing away valuable picks like we don’t have any holes, when we have 4 or more. We. Just because I’m a fan doesn’t mean I have to like what they do, I don’t, I freaking hate it. I want Ross to hate it too and hold him responsible.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Of course, but what are we as fans supposed to do about it? Just because you don’t like the look of it now doesn’t mean it will be bad.

I think we’re going to use our RBs more both rushing and receiving. More play-action to open up big plays. The OL is a big part of that.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

you’ve pigeonholed this trade up, you have this idea that moving up and losing picks is bad, no matter what

You’ve said your piece, as we all did just after the selection

some of us have gotten over it for the time being, if it doesn’t work out, I’ll be the first to say Grier FDd up again, until that time it’s wait and see

sure I’ve grown to like the pick, after seeing the tape and understand the logic behind it

unlike what some have said the trade wasn’t just done to move ahead of NE

  53. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim- no, I just wish everyone could accept things as they are, and not try to put a positive spin on it. Trading away valuable picks year after year doesn’t help assemble a winning team, especially when you go for broke and trade away picks and then overpay a handful of players, all this while letting players you actually drafted and were two of your best players on the lines they played on.

I’m not saying not to root for the team we have, but why is it necessary to defend every shitty decision they make? They extend and pay Ramsey and then a half a year later you announce to the league that you mutually agreed to part ways. They could have played Tua on his 5th year option but gave him a tip tier QB contract for a QB who can’t stay on the field or elevate his play or team against better teams.

Just me personally, these are the things that annoy me. Grier leaves gaping holes in the roster partly because he just can’t play the board, and no matter how many times he trades picks and panics to get one player when we need 5, you all fall in line and defend his actions.

I’ll root for the team, but if they suck or are just mediocre which I feel is the ceiling for this team, I’ll root for Grier to get canned, along with McDaniel and Tua to get cut

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t know else to say. We’ll see what the 53 is. It’s about the roster, not mock drafts.

  54. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If Big Jonah works out great for us… GRAND! NOBODY is going to second-guess the trade-up selection if he becomes a Pro-Bowler or All-Pro.

After 4 years, the question will become: will Chris Grier then say Big Jonah has earned the right to test FA, or will he be re-signed?!!

Y’all might not like the question (or me as the messenger), but THAT is what we’re dealing with right now. What a wasted year last year became as a result. We couldn’t run due to a defunct O-Line, and being we couldn’t run, every team played 2-deep Safeties against us, nullifying our passing attack.

Absolute mismanagement while our playoff window was WIDE OPEN last season. SMH

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And THINK(!) about it! After Grier allowed both Robert Hunt and Christian Wilkins walk into FA, he then EXTENDS(!) both ‘Reek and Ramsey… AFTER having already payed them top-3 $$$ per position in NFL history!

Chris Grier is a clown. Ramsey is already on his way out, and ‘Reek is day-to-day as to whether he wants to stay or leave. And one more off-field incident from ‘Reek might even have him suspended for some time.

      Way to go, Grier!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Mike E will be quick to remind me that we also gave Tua a mega-contract… and he’s not wrong.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

However, I DO understand that ya want to get a good, young QB on his second contract as soon a possible. For instance, Tua no longer even has a top-10 QB contract.

It’s a numbers game, and I think we extended Tua at the appropriate time. Yes… some would say to play him on his 5th-year contract. Had he balled out last season, we would never be able to afford him. Still, he led the NFL in completion % without being a “Checkdown Chad”.

There IS something to work with there in Tua… so long as he stays healthy… which is the #1 thing he NEEDS to lead in!

  55. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – my thought is even if Jonah becomes a solid starter, that doesn’t mean we had to trade up for him. You can get good players playing your draft board right without moving a single slot, you have to have patience, discipline and not focus on one player at any cost. This is why we’re looking at a secondary of Melifonwu, Davis , Smith and Duck

  56. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tyreek Hill should be focused on helping the team win not selfish personal goals. Any player who has great stats helps the team, of course, but the focus on him and his production isn’t good for the team. We cannot do anything if we become focused on him getting his yards. I don’t see him yapping about wanting to get 2000 yards or whatever he’s saying as productive, and it sure as hell isn’t what a leader does. Shut the hell up and go win games. How about that?

  73. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I’m not so sure Hill plays better when he’s angry. I see him get frustrated when he doesn’t make plays. Besides, you can’t play angry all the time. It’s exhausting and a pro shouldn’t need it. If 2K motivates him, keep it to yourself.

But, what worries me more is that our offense becomes Hill-centric, and Tua is constantly feeding him the ball. It stagnates the offense. We have good skill players all over the field. Why focus on one guy? Not to mention we did that one year, and it got us zilch in terms of TEAM success .

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike McDaniel says the Miami Dolphins are doing more situational football earlier in camp this yet.

Mike McDaniel of Dolphins believes this team is invested and has a good mindset. He is motivated for the team to tell him who they want to be. He is happy with today, knowing today is not the ultimate vision.

Mike McDaniel says he’s interested in the players that are here today. McDaniel asked three Qs about Jalen Ramsey and stuck with that. McDaniel almost always answers our questions thoughtfully and openly, so this is probably simply strategic. Maybe more after trade is completed.

Mike McDaniel says Tua Tagovailoa is working on consistency of development. Tua will detail points of emphasis for us when he speaks with us.

Mike McDaniel on Tyreek Hill: He’s been proactive. He is working with the team. He is attacking the strength program and running routes, if not blocking or catching yet.

Mike McDaniel on James Daniels and Austin Jackson: Jackson is doing more than Daniels. Daniels has been active in the film room.

Mike McDaniel says on Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips they are both able to participate in most thing most days now

  80. Randy's avatar Randy says:

They need to figure out how to get Achane in space. It doesn’t really matter how they do it. You can also just use him to draw coverage and open spaces for others. If teams decide to cover him with other than a LB, it should create spaces in coverage and big mismatches elsewhere.
