Miami Dolphins OTA’s

Ah, the offseason! The Miami Dolphins always win the offseason, we usually overspend and bring in top talent that other teams have developed. This season, however, is different! We’re not bringing in any overpriced talent (we have no cap room), but we have unquestionably brought in the best UDFA’s and our draft haul was outstanding! It’s that magical time of the year when the coaches and players are telling you how different everything is, how serious they are now, and just how unbelievable amazing the rookies are, both drafted and undrafted.

WR Jaylen Waddle was effusive and gushing about how good the young guys in the secondary looked, how hard they were making it to get open. Never mind that DB Jalen Ramsey will be traded at some point and you can add TE Jonnu Smith as one who will potentially be traded. I’ll admit that Jonnu was one of my favorite players last season, in a season when really I hated just about everyone on the team. He was one player that far exceeded expectations. There were a couple of other players that fall into that category, DL Calais Campbell and LT Terron Armstead. As you know, both of them are gone, Terron Armstead retired and Calais Campbell decided to play for the Arizona Cardinals where his career began. So basically, it’s possible that my 3 favorite players will all be off the team.

There are still guys on the team that I’m really pulling for. OLB Jaelan Phillips, my goodness, how can you NOT root for this guy? Last year after coming back from a grueling rehab from a torn achilles injury, he was finally getting into a groove and starting to feel normal in Game 4 and he was taken out by his own teammate while making a tackle, it was a helmet to his knee.. He finished the season with a torn ACL. Torn achilles, torn ACL in 2 consecutive years. Just brutal, but this kid is a workout warrior and has just absolutely unshakable resolve. I hope he can finally stay healthy and have a great season. The guy looks like Hercules, we can only hope that he can finally avoid a brutal season ending injury.

The players love the coaches, HC Mike McDaniel has figured everything out, although the players still run the team, and this is how Mike McDaniel wants it. We’ll probably never know why Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded, and to be fair, it doesn’t really matter because he’s been this guy his entire career. He’s a malcontent, and has been this at every NFL stop. He’ll be that at his next destination, wherever that might be. We know our compensation will be disproportionate to what he’s worth as a player, but we’ll have to take whatever it is. TE Jonnu Smith is a different story. Smith came from the Falcons where they have a super talented RB in Bijan Robinson who is a great rusher and an even better receiver. They also had former 1st RD pick (RD 1 #4) TE Kyle Pitts, who out targeted Smith 93 – 70, but they finished only 3 receptions apart, Pitts with 53-667 yards, 3 TD’s, and Smith with 50-582 yards, 3 TD’s. Jonnu was perfect for us last season. We became a short passing team because of our O-line deficiencies and Jonnu made the most of every time he touched the ball. For some perspective about his performance last season, WR Tyreek Hill was the only receiver that had more targets. Hill was targeted 123 times and finished with 81 receptions for 959 yards and 6 TD’s. Jonnu was targeted 111 times for 884 yards and 8 TD’s. Hills YPR was 11.8, Jonnu 10.0. Very small difference from one of the fastest WR’s in the NFL and a TE.

So, rejoice Dolphins fans, this is the time to enjoy the team, before the real games start and the roster is purged. Enthusiasm is running rampant, ride that wave, taste it, drink it in! It’s exciting! Our 5th RD draft picks will be among the league leaders, and our undrafted free agents just a nick below that! Our O-line will be amazing, and QB Tua Tagovailoa will take us to the Superbowl and be SB MVP! WR Tyreek Hill will have 2000 yards receiving, TE Julian Hill will just miss the Pro Bowl, OLB Jaelan Phillips will play the entire season and lead the team with 15 sacks. OG Jonah Savaiinaea will be considered for rookie of the year but will be a rookie All-Pro. It’s all coming together for us, I can’t wait!

HC Mike McDaniel Thursday June 12 media availability coverage thread:

On the importance of continuity at C in this system both for the player (Brewer), and the entire OL): A lead communicator. Decision maker. Any time you’re in charge of that. Leading other players whether you’re a MIKE or a center…ownership, confidence and delivery are gigantic. Biggest thing for Brew, on top of that confidence, he also has a skill set that’s unique at his position. When his technique is right he can be a very violent player. I think there’s a correlation between guys that have that tonality and the respect and regard. As a leader, it’s huge because the more confidence he has and the more he’s able to be a fixture of leadership on the team the better off we are.

On how the offense adjusts to what it saw last year: defenses spent their time figuring out how to make us perform in all facets, and it’s two dimensional. No matter how adept we were at any sort of pass game, it showed us that we will have to earn our way out of that, and you can. If you’re trying to do it just with passing it’s going to be difficult, close to impossible.

What Jaylen Waddle has achieved this offseason: he’s shown his teammates who he really is. One thing you can’t really minimize from a WRs perspective having QBs that you didn’t’ even practice with in training camp, that’s a difficult task. The way he worked on his game during the season has transferred into what we need to see from every player. Your best players have to show commitment to have growth in their game. He understands his role as a leader a little bit more. He’s taken more ownership in the tonality of practice. When he feels a lull he starts some competitive vibes, let’s just say. That’s an important part of our team and what we’re trying to do.

Coach on what they accomplished in the offseason program: the point of our offseason program was to take action with what we want to do as a team. Understanding that you can’t play any games, but you can make a lot of gains. A team bond has occurred. A team identity standard has been created in how we do our business. Now that the systems are in place, it’s time to make that daily commitment.

On what changed from this time last year: when you don’t meet expectations, with the (guys that are back), you find conviction in what needs to occur. A lot of this offseason was shaped partly in form of things that we’ve learned. Guys were highly motivated to have a different sense of team at this point.

On growth and chemistry between he and Weave in the second year together: It’s amazing how this offseason in particular, being able to spend all the time with the DEF staff, just where we’re able to utilize each other to make gains for the ultimate goal. Coach continued discussing the drill work they researched deeply as a staff this year… We missed tackles. How do you become a better tackling team when you can’t tackle (in spring). In Y2 of a defensive scheme you can really use a paint brush to show guys how they can put themselves in position, when they’re not tackling, to be better tacklers.

All this talk means little to me. They can claim culture changes and attitude adjustments but you need to see the results on the field. It’s going to take more than talk to be better in the secondary and on the O-line

Randy – we need Bob Ross’s former personality, the Drill Sargeant to be the Head Coach

I had forgotten about Ross’ military career. Yeah, I’ll take a fighter pilot/drill sergeant. He can do painting classes too if he wants. Lol

Like a few of you, I’ve begun to think our Safety room could be alright. Not great, but alright… perhaps even acceptable. Nonetheless, I would upgrade at the CB position.

Yes… our DF7 is likely going to generate a powerful pass-rush… knock on wood for their collective and individual health. But once opposing Offenses start using max-protect, matchups could get very fugly with our current CB room.

I do not like Jaire’s repeated injury history, but if the shoe fits, alright. Again, he cannot command $$$, and we could probably get him on the cheap with a ‘prove it’ contract.

My preference is Asante Samuel Jr, should he check out as fully healthy in July. The thing with ASJ though? We’re likely to get in a bidding war for him, especially with the Saints.

Cam Smith is going to be a bust (whether it be injuries or otherwise) IMO, Storm Duck still has a LONG way to go IMO, Darth Kader is built for the slot, and I haven’t enough faith in the rest of the CB room to answer the call.

I’m all good with either of Jaire or ASJ at this point in time, just get a vet CB to keep us somewhat competitive this year on the Defensive side of the ball. THAT — in and of itself — will make life even easier for our Safeties.

      OH SHIT!!! Not good!!!

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

It will get dropped. Not because he is Jimmy Ward. I see it all the time here. The one charge that is dropped/dismissed the most on all bonds we write is Battery-Domestic Violence. It’s not even close and doesn’t matter if it is felony or misdemeanor.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I just hope he isn’t guilty of what he’s accused of having done. But if he is, bye-bye.

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

I used to go on well checks with cops all the time. Lots of them involved domestic situations. Cops hate them, and so did I. So much drama and BS. I was always surprised at how often it wasn’t about a guy hitting his significant other.

But, I was also tasked with assisting gals in requesting OFPs or restraining orders. I can’t tell you how many times the gal decided to not follow through. Most of the time. I’d always tell them that the judges just rubber-stamped those things anyway. It can be hard.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think in most cases the offender is guilty but the alleged victim requests to have the charge dropped. It’s 50/50 on if the state still picks it up or not but eventually drops it anyway. I’d say it’s close to 90% dropped when the victim requests it. Only if there is significant evidence does it stick. Then again, some people learn how to use the system to control their partner when they are not getting their way.

The officers here hate those calls also. I think that is why they almost always take someone to jail.

      Speaking for my area anyway.

Former NFL star Antonio Brown wanted by Miami police on attempted murder charges.

Brown , 36, is accused of firing two shots during a brawl between two groups of people in Miami’s Little Haiti airport, according to a warrant seen by The Washington Post.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

He said he was jumped and they were trying to steal his jewelry.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The charge stems from a shooting Brown was allegedly involved in during a celebrity boxing event in Miami last month. The warrant shows a charge of attempted murder with a firearm; it also instructs Brown to post a $10,000 bond and remain on house arrest until trial, according to The Post.

Attempted murder, they haven’t even brought him in yet since filing the charge, and it’s already been determined he gets out on a nothing bail (might as well have OR’d him) and he house arrest, lol.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

“I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me,” he wrote on his X account. “Contrary to some video circulating, Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED. I will be talking to my legal council and attorneys on pressing charges on the individuals that jumped me.”

According to the warrant, witnesses told police officers that Brown was the shooter, and two shell casings were found at the scene. Brown was unarmed at the time he was detained, but the man he allegedly punched during the altercation told police that Brown “began to run toward him with a firearm” after the fight had already been broken up and shot at him twice.

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Not news to us. We knew MM didn’t have a grasp on the pulse of the team last year. His response to Chubb’s comments about lying last year.

“It would have been awesome if he would have told me on the front end when they were lying.” McDaniel said. “Beyond that, 2024, unless I’m using it directly for an analogy, I’m much more concerned with 2025. I think you do a lot more for the organization if you spend your time thinking forward in terms of not this, that, or the other, or whose fault it was. No, we want it like this, let’s do it like this and this is who we are. I don’t even – what year did you speak of? I guess I’ll read about that in history books.”
