Dolphins Training camp going full steam, Savaiinaea signed, other bits too

Training camp is on! Rookie OG Jonah Savaiinaea is signed, and the the Dolphins added another free agent OG, former Niners and Titans OG Daniel Brunskill. The Dolphins also added CB Cornell Armstrong, who was originally drafted by our Dolphins in 2018 in the 6th RD. He’s more than likely likely a ST’s and back end of the CB rotation type of guy if he makes the 53 man roster. As far as the O-line is concerned, OG Liam Eichenberg who was slated to be the 6th guy on the O-line will miss a few weeks into the season with an injury, which necessitated the Brunskill signing.

I’m glad the big guy (Jonah Savaiinaea) is signed and now working, which is something I felt was so important to him being as ready as possible to start for us this season. Rookies have enough obstacles to deal with, a holdout and missing time could have proved to be too much. It also seems as if Daniel Brunskill is a guy who could step in and give us quality play without a huge dropoff, and that’s good, especially if Eichenberg is really going to miss a lot of time. James Daniels is working with the team now which is a good sign, I was having my doubts as to whether he would be good to start the season while still recovering from injury.

It appears as if WR Erik Ezukanma is making is his annual Training Camp drool reports, but is anyonme here buying that he can do it and stay healthy during the season? Not me, not anymore. We have some depth as it is now with Malik Washington and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, who is a bigger, more physical receiver, so EZ has his work cut out to even make the roster. I have nothing against Erik Ezukanma, but I do think the team has to be careful though to rely on him because he’s let us down by mostly not being able to stay healthy.

It’s crazy how fast time is going, the first preseason game is in about 3 weeks, Aug 10th, against the Chicago Bears. Apparently our “rivalry” jersey log was released, and it appears that the logo is orange and black, which would lead you to believe the Jersey with be orange, black and aqua, and not feature the Marlins pink color in them. Thank goodness for that, pink has no place in the NFL, but is fine in the Lingerie League where it belongs!

Noah Fant visiting with the Dolphins today.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I see him somewhere between Waller and Jonnu

better YAC than Waller, not quite what Jonnu is

better catch radius than Jonnu, not quite what Waller is

Basically whatever Waller does better than Jonnu he falls in between and vice versa

would be a great replacement of Jonnu

  1. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Who needs Noah Fant? We have Darren Waller!!! We have Tanner Conner!!! We have Julian Hill!!!

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ollie Gordon II had two runs inside the five yard line, neither of which resulted in a touchdown

    ————–

I told ya before the draft and after we drafted him, he is not the big short yardage back you think he is. He was/is overrated. There were several other much better options, IMO. Damien Martinez, Taj Brooks and Brashard Smith just to name a few. I will even throw Phil Mafah in there.

I’m inclined to… KICK THOSE TIRES!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d take him over Fant, if he’s still got some juice, but wow either one would really push our skilled players over the top

Cordarrelle has the power we could really use, Tua would love him

how many vet skilled players do we need?

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, I like him and still wish we had drafted him. I could see him easily beating out Mattison and Gordon. After 12 seasons, what does he have left in the tank? And would we really want to stall Gordon’s development?

  4. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Besides RB’s Martinez, Brooks and Smith, these are players I think we could’ve should’ve drafted instead of Gordon in the 6th round, pick 179:

QB’s – Kurtis Rourke, Kyle McCord or Will Howard

DL – DT/DE JJ Pegues, Edge Antwan Powell-Ryland, Edge Fadil Diggs or Edge Ahmed Hassanein

OL – OT Bryce Cabeldue, OT Ajani Cornelious, OT Chase Lundt or C/OG Jonah Monheim

TE’s Thomas Fidone or Luke Lachey

    DB’s – CB Korie Black, S Hunter Wholer, S Kitan Crawford, S R.J Mickens, S Jaylen Reed

  5. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    BBM and Steve,

YES, y’all. I’d kick the tires on Cordarrelle. Just remember, kicking the tires doesn’t mean to autopen sign him, either. If there isn’t much gas left in his tank, then there’s no need to sign him.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Keep in mind, I feel there’s still much tread left on those tires. 546 career rushing attempts, 310 career receptions… though he’s 33 years old now.

Ricky once had 392 rushing attempts in a single-season for us back in ’03.

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Chop Robinson with a “would-be” sack on Tua

Tua hit Tyreek deep down the field on a post pattern for a “would-be” touchdown. Tyreek beat Jason Marshall Jr on the play

    ———–

This was on the same play. That TD never happens as Chop won so quickly and just runs by Tua. Tua throws a half second after Chop would have already buried him.

Also, Marshall played good coverage/positioning on Tyreek but as soon as the ball was in the air Tyreek was able to accelerate away from Marshall.

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

No to Patterson. No to Fant. No to anymore players unless they actually need players. Go with what you got. Take your lumps and start building this team with youth…not a bunch of older guys or guys who aren’t gonna be helping this team in 2-3 years.

    And get off my lawn!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I understand where you’re coming from, Randy… and you aren’t wrong, either. All I know is that we’ve had a very bad problem in developing talent over the x amount of years.

That’s reflective of our FO, its hirings, and recent coaching, IMO.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And when I say recent coaching, that goes back to Joe Philbin’s tenure as our HC.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I suppose what I’m getting at is this: it should be no surprise that we’ve been signing high-priced FAs for some time now, being we can’t seem to develop our own… save a few.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And the few that we HAVE been able to develop? They are granted the RIGHT to test FA. SMH

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tyreek will most likely be gone next, unless they can work something out, he’s our only true superstar, that can take over a game any given week, a player who is game planned for by the opposition

tomorrow never comes, worry about tiday is how I feel at the moment

what makes Mahomes, Allen and Jackson great? At the end of games on 3rd and 4th downs they’re very hard to stop

Tua isn’t that, but give him enough possession/explosive receivers and a little time and he could be hard to stop too

3rd down could be Tyreek, Waddle, NWI, Waller, Fant/Cordarrelle/Achane

I like the chances of getting a good % of 1st downs with that line up

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

I have several friends who are huge Chiefs fans. They are all slobbering over how great Josh Simmons has been in practices. I, of course, told them to wipe their chins, but I told you he might be the best OT in last year’s draft. Evidently he’s looking like a vet pro already. We’ll see how he progresses.

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I hate when we have a GM and HC on the hot seat. It usually means they make shortsighted and stupid moves. Moves focused on keeping their jobs instead of the long term success of the team.

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

Philbin gets a bad rap. I agree that he wasn’t a good HC. However, he is a respected position coach. HCs do very little actual coaching, so I doubt it was Philbin’s fault. Position coaches and their assistants are the ones who actual coach players. Maybe he hired the wrong assistants but I don’t even remember if he hired anybody. Wasn’t that about 20 years ago? Lol

  12. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Was never a fan of the tweener Cordarrelle.

Some say he is “multi-positional” I say he isn’t right for any position.

11 years, he has averaged 260 rushing yards and 280 receiving yards per year. Half his rushing yards come from two years in ATL only 5 years has he averaged more than 300 receiving yards.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

with the game on the line and throughout the Atl fest game he was unstoppable

I wouldn’t mind having that type of 3rd down back, he’s better than what Jonnu did last year with short passes

Miami Dolphins former OG Robert Jones got hurt early in practice yesterday but finished practice and took extra reps with rookie OG Tyler Booker. Robert Jones was examined after practice and was found to have a broken bone in his neck. He is fine but walking around with a neck brace and will be out at least 2-3 months.

  16. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    YEP! Exactly what I thought.

So, the 16.2m signing bonus Minkah got in the restructured deal is spread over 5 years to include 3 VOID YEARS (2027 through 2029) at 3.2m per year.

    More future dead money.

The restructure did reduce his 2025 cap hit to about 4.5m. They also cut 2m off his 2026 base salary but with the added 3.2m restructure bonus his 2026 cap hit went up over 1m to a total 2026 cap hit of 18.8m.

Unfortunately, something had to be done to clear cap due to past mismanagement.

Dolphins, per Spotrac, now have around 12.3m in cap space, but with contracts still pending on Jack Jones, Mike Hilton, Daniel Brunskill and Cornell Armstrong.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The added 2026 cap hit on Minkah puts us at around -17.1m for 2026. Of course, that number will be flipped around to the positive 17+m once they kick Tyreek to the curb.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Time to stop signing more guys like Noah Fant. You built the roster, run with what you’ve dine. Losers keep adding to the roster a month and a week before the season

  18. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

I agree! Play with what you have unless you’re adding young talent, which isn’t just hanging out on street corners in late July. I wanna see young guys given chances to step up and show they want to be a part of a winning team. Start weeding out the chaff and build a solid base…not a beautiful roof.

That said, we’re about to go 17-0 so pull up your support hose and grab your walker…maybe even get your chiffon robe dry cleaned! 😜

  19. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Fant is a Hawkeye, so I won’t complain…much. He’s on the downside of his career, but he probably has 2-3 good years left. He’s never been a big TD guy, and that’s what I’d like if you’re gonna sign a guy. And, There are only so many balls to go around. I hope Hill, Waddle and Achane are targeted the most. Then a TE. It’s not a crazy idea. It all depends on the money, I guess. I still don’t think they should be focused on what he gives you now. What’s he give you in 2-3 years?

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Randy, this is one Hawkeye I have on my draft radar to keep an eye on this season as a 5th round pick. I think we could use another 3-4 DE to go with Sieler and Grant.

The Miami Dolphins’ first practice in pads, the sixth overall of training camp, is underway Tuesday at Baptist Health Training Complex.

The physicality is expected to ramp up.

After quarterback Tua Tagovailoa earned the orange jersey for highlighted practice player of the day at Monday drills, second-year edge rusher Chop Robinson donned it Tuesday.

    — O-line/D-line 1-on-1s were a priority to watch at the first padded practice: LT Patrick Paul  held up well against Robinson and kept Bradley Chubb in front of him twice, but one might’ve been holding. … Robinson went right around Ryan Hayes. … Zach Sieler went through Jonah Savaiinaea going at his left shoulder, but Savaiinaea held up well against rookie DT Kenneth Grant… Jaelan Phillips was seen stood up initially by James Daniels, but then he spun around him. …Mohamed Kamara easily won a rep against Larry Borom and also had another pass-rush win against Obinna Eze… DT Alex Huntley went right around OL Kion Smith.

    — The young left side of the line, between Paul and Savaiinaea held up well early in the team setting. There wasn’t much pressure coming from the left side.

    — Tua Tagovailoa made a great throw with zip on it to Jaylen Waddle on a skinny post.

    — In a later team period, Tua had his backs getting open down the field as coach Mike McDaniel worked in some wheel routes. FB Alec Ingold and RB De’Von Achane were wide open for downfield connections.

    — Tagovailoa nearly had an intermediate out-breaking connection with Tyreek Hill, much like what was seen between the two Monday, but the throw was a little behind Hill and off his hands incomplete. The Dolphins starting QB had a big blitz sent at him from his right. He rolled away from it and threw it away in the vicinity of Waddle.

    — Robinson appeared to get a would-be sack at the feet of Tagovailoa. CB Kendall Sheffield also broke through on a blitz and appeared he would get to Tua if tackling to the ground, as DC Anthony Weaver got creative with his calls.

    — RB De’Von Achane had a big hole open for him through the middle of the first-team line.

    — RB Alexander Mattison also showed a burst, breaking off a long run up the middle. Defenses do not want to see the powerful back coming downhill like that. Even if tackling to the ground, none of the defensive backs had a chance once he got rolling.

    — S Ashtyn Davis was hurt toward the end of an early team period. He walked off the practice field under his own power, but with a heavy limp. He later reemerged on crutches and wearing a boot on his left foot.

    — In WR-DB 1-on-1s: Tyreek Hill won against Minkah Fitzpatrick  coming back for a pass. Jaylen Waddle had a couple of wins short catch win against Kendall Sheffield. Ezukanma had a long touchdown pass over Isaiah Johnson. AJ Henning separated himself from Cornell Armstrong for a catch. CB Jason Marshall Jr. had a pass breakup guarding Ezukanma.

    — WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine had a catch for a sizable gain from QB Zach Wilson in 11s for a second consecutive practice. Wilson also hit TE Pharaoh Brown open to the outside off play action. Wilson made a downfield connection with Erik Ezukanma.

    — WR Tahj Washington looks like he has speed, agility and moves to put on defenders in the open field. He caught an intermediate crossing pass from Wilson and was escaping defenders.

    — Wilson also made a fine connection with WR Tarik Black.

    — CB Ethan Bonner made a diving pass breakup on the sideline on a pass from Wilson.

    — AJ Henning had a drop and slammed the ground, knowing he should’ve had it. Black also had a bad drop.

    — CB Storm Duck was back at practice Tuesday, but fellow cornerbacks Kader Kohou and BJ Adams were not present, along with safety Dante Trader Jr., tight end Jalin Conyers and tackle Bayron Matos.

    — Center Aaron Brewer was still not dressed for Tuesday’s practice as he gets healthy from a lower-body soft-tissue injury while still kept off the physically-unable-to-perform list so he can snap with Tagovailoa. Brewer, though, was seen working out on the side early in practice. Stock up

LB Willie Gay was a standout Tuesday and has been through the early portions of camp. He has been strong in run defense and pressuring quarterbacks. He had a tackle for loss on a Jaylen Wright run going to the outside, a sack later on and, in a recent practice had an impressive pass batdown at the line of scrimmage. Paul also had a strong day’s work as the pads came on. He held his own against talented top Dolphins pass-rushers in 1-on-1s and that translated over to the team setting. He looks polished as he becomes a starter this year. Stock down

Undrafted rookie WR AJ Henning had a drop, and he can’t let opportunities pass him by. RB Jaylen Wright fumbled on a play where the defense was offside, but he also ran the ball well, so I won’t bash him. But he needs to step up with veteran RB Alexander Mattison having some solid practices.

  24. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The festivities this time began with the team’s theme song blasting over the loudspeakers with the four rookie free agent wide receivers — Andrew Armstrong, Monaray Baldwin, Theo Wease Jr. and A.J. Henning — pumping up the crowd before practice.

Cornerback Storm Duck was back at practice after being out Monday.

Along with the three players on injury lists — Liam Eichenberg, Waller and Ifeatu Melifonwu — center Aaron Brewer continues to miss practice with a lower-body injury that head coach Mike McDaniel said wasn’t serious and tackle Bayron Matos is still out as he continues to recover from his scary upper-body injury.

Rookie safety Dante Trader Jr., a fifth-round pick from Maryland, missed a fourth consecutive practice and was joined on the absent list by Kader Kohou and B.J. Adams, along with TE Jalin Conyersl.

The one new player to miss practice Tuesday was linebacker Dequan Jackson.

Linebacker Chop Robinson wore the orange jersey as the player of the day Saturday.

    PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS

    — The first competitive drill of practice involved receivers vs. DBs, backs and tight ends vs. linebackers, and linemen against linemen.

    — As was the case Saturday, the first rep saw Minkah Fitzpatrick covering Tyreek Hill.

    — Jason Marshall Jr. had a nice pass breakup on that drill.

    — Isaiah Johnson punched the ball out after Erik Ezukanma caught a pass near the sideilne.

    — Ezukanma came back with a long reception against Johnson.

    — In the pass-rushing side, James Daniels had a great rep standing up Zach Sieler and that followed by Jonah Savaiinaea standing up Mohamed Kamara.

    — Daniell Brunskill stood up Jordan Phillipsl.

    — Addison West stood up Zeek Biggers.

    — Chop Robinson got around Ryan Hayes very quickly. On his next rep, Hayes kept Grayson Murphy outside and threw him to the ground.

    — Quinton Bell got around Austin Jackson.

    — Rookie free agent Alex Huntley had two good reps in this drill.

    — Kamara easily got around Larry Borom.

    — Ewers had a nice completion to Tanner Conner after rolling out to his left.

    — Patrick Paul got handsy a couple of times in this drill, but finishes up nicely when he stood up and stopped Bradley Chubb.

    — On the second play of 11-on-11s, Tua Tagovailoa threw a little behind Tyreek Hill on a deep corner route and Hill couldn’t make the catch.

    — Zach Wilson’s first snap ended with a completion to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine where the pass was a bit off the mark and NWI had to go down to make the catch.

    — Wilson had an easy completion to Pharaoh Brown after the defense bit on a fake pitch and he rolled out. Way too easy from a defensive standpoint.

    — Willie Gay Jr., who’s had a greart camp, met Ollie Gordon II in the backfield as soon as he got a handoff.

    — Jaylen Wright fumbled on a handoff from Quinn Ewers and Kamara recovered, but the defense was flagged for offside.

    — A.J. Henning dropped an easy pass from Quinn Ewers on a short crosser.

    — At the start of the next set of 11-on-11s, Tua had a nice completion to Jaylen Waddle over the middle between defenders.

    — Tua threw wide of Waddle after being flushed out of the pocket.

    — Ethan Bonner dove to break up a Wilson pass intended for Dee Eskridge near the sideline.

    — Tarik Black failed to come up with a catchable pass from Wilson, who followed that on the next play with a nice mid-range completion to Erik Ezukanma.

    — Oh, we should mention there again have been a lot of flags on the offense for pre-snap penalties.

    — Channing Tindall with great coverage against Jaylen Wright near the line of scrimmage forces an incompletion from Quinn Ewers after he moved in the pocket.

    — Jonah Savaiinaea moved Benito Jones way off the line of scrimmage to create a hole for Wright on a running play.

    — After a play where the pocket collapsed on Tagovailoa, safety Ashtyn Davis stayed down before hobbling to the sideline while favoring his left leg.

    — After some special teams work, Wilson had a nice completion over the middle to Tahj Washington over the middle for about 15 yards and Washington kept running and going outside. Kudos to Gay for never stopping running and catching up to Washington some 60 yards downfield.

    — Kendall Sheffield got to Tua very quickly on a pass play.

    — Wilson had a pretty completion to Tarik Black down the right sideline over a defender. Wilson has made a few of those Tua-like throws in camp.

    — Gay and Jordan Colbert both got to Wilson on a pass play.

    — Ewers badly misfired on a seam pass to Theo Wease Jr., to the point where we have to wonder whether there was a miscommunication issue. After a few really good practices, Ewers hasn’t been nearly as productive in this one.

    — Pharaoh Brown stood up Chubb in pass protection on a play that ended with a Tua completion to fullback Alec Ingold, wide open down the right sideline.

    — On the next play, Tua hit De’Von Achane down the left sideline behind Chubb.

    — Linebacker Jordyn Brooks knocked the ball out of Tua’s hand as he was about to throw on the next snap.

    — Fullback Alec Ingold with a nice lead block on Chop Robinson on an Alexander Mattison run.

    — Wilson was a little high on an outside throw to Ezukanma.

    — Wilson had to reach to snag an errant shotgun snap by Daniel Brunskill on a play that was busted up by pressure.

    — Jaylen Waddle laid out to catch a pass from Tua over Ethan Bonner in a fourth-and-1 situation. It’s practice, but here’s hoping the Dolphins maybe run the ball more in these situations.

    — Wilson with another nice mid-range completion, this one to Pharaoh Brown.

    — Gay stopped Wright on a run for a short gain or no gain.

Mike hasn’t changed at all.” But… “I think maybe the emphasis around him and respecting him more as players has changed as we’ve gotten some players out who might have not been as respectful…. The team is very bought in. They believe in Mike and what he wants to do.”

Through six practices quarterback Tua Tagovailoa hasn’t thrown an interception and has continued to show the accuracy that makes him one of the league’s best in that category. Tagovailoa had a well-placed 28-yard strike to wide receiver Jaylen Waddle during Tuesday’s practice and a well-placed 20-yard strike to Waddle in Monday’s practice.

Second-team quarterback Zach Wilson has been showing the arm strength that made him the No. 2 pick of the 2021 draft by the New York Jets. Wilson appears more comfortable each day in the Dolphins’ offense.

Third-team quarterback Quinn Ewers, the rookie seventh-round pick from Texas, has been effective and efficient in his performance and has seemed to move the offense well when he gets his opportunities.

The news on Wilson and Ewers is especially promising considering Tagovailoa has had injury concerns in 2022 and 2024, and the backup quarterbacks such as Skylar Thompson, Teddy Bridgewater, Tyler “Snoop” Huntley and Tim Boyle have struggled to a two-year starting record of 3-8 games.

What was it that Grier heard in MMs interview to think he was IT? I don’t think Grier knows what it is

in 2023, once Ttreek and Waddle were mostly taken away, we didn’t have that 3rd guy to pick up critical 3rd downs

2025, hopefully we’ve got enough guys on 3rd down, that can get open, decent time to throw, and a power back, thats where my hope comes from

Yeah yeah, injuries happen to every team. Not every team is built to top heavy with little to know depth like we are.

Oline – 1 or 2 injuries from tanking the season. Secondary? already threatening the season. We already have so many guys banged up or not practicing (starting Guard, starting center, starting CB, starting nickle, starting CB, starting Safety) Just a few more “minor” injuries can derail this season. Forget about more major injuries, which WILL occur!

    Camp update from the SS

MIAMI GARDENS — Dolphins inside linebacker Willie Gay Jr. was unstoppable once again. Gay has been recording sacks, stopping run for losses and breaking up passes throughout training camp and his strong play continued Wednesday, the seventh practice of camp and second day in full pads

On the other side of the ball, running back Alexander Mattison, regarded as the short yardage back, continues to show quick feet whole recording double-digit gains.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle had good success once again.

The cornerbacks, on the heels of the news that nickel/slot Kader Kohou (right knee) will go on injured reserve and be out for the season, didn’t make many plays. It should be noted they were further injury depleted but they didn’t have a strong day. The same could be said for the safeties, who learned they might be without Ashtyn Davis (left leg) for an extended period.

–WR Tyreek Hill was excused from practice for personal reasons. Hill hasn’t run as many deep routes in training camp at this point as he has in the previous three camps under coach Mike McDaniel. But Hill has had success against the secondary while running mostly intermediate and short routes.

–WR Jaylen Waddle wore the orange jersey, symbolic of the player of the day. Waddle has had a strong camp and continues to be QB Tua Tagovailoa’s favorite target at this early point of camp. Waddle was somewhat of a surprise choice considering ILB Willie Gay Jr. was almost impossible to contain vs. the run and pass Tuesday.

–Among those not spotted at Wednesday’s practice Hill (personal reasons), CB Kader Kohou (knee injury/injured reserve), S Ashtyn Davis (left leg), CB BJ Adams (concussion protocol), S Dante Trader Jr. (unknown), LB Dequan Jackson (unknown), C Aaron Brewer (soft tissue), OT Bayron Matos (upper body), OL Obinna Eze (unknown), TE Jaylin Conyers (unknown), CB Kendall Sheffield (unknown).

–Snapshots from 1-on-1s early in practice: DT Zach Sieler blows by RG James Daniels…C Andrew Meyer does well vs. NT Benito Jones…WR A.J. Henning beats CB Cornell Armstrong…RB Ollie Gordon has reception vs. ILB KJ Britt…LT Patrick Paul does well vs. edge rusher Bradley Chubb…Paul vs. Chubb was impressive job by Paul, who is having a nice camp. Paul also had nice repetition vs. edge rusher Chop Robinson

–More snapshots from 1-on-1s…WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, who is struggling, drops ball that hit him in chest vs. CB Ethan Robinson on nice pass by Tua…ILB Willie Gay Jr. beats block by Gordon…RB Alexander Mattison, the short-yardage specialist who has displayed good feet, blocks LB Channing Tindall…S Elijah Campbell INT defending TE Julian Hill.

–More snapshots from 1 on 1s: WR Dee Eskridge drop vs. CB Ethan Bonner…LBs did well vs. blocking RBs…WRs had good showing in 1 on 1s but DBs made some plays…OL did well vs. DL.

–Sieler continues doing all repetitions in 11 on 11 drills, indicating he’s not staging a hold-in, which means sitting out certain drills while in contract negotiations.

–TE Julian Hill drop on easy pass from Tagovailoa. Ball was low but definitely shoulda been caught. Hill, a much better blocker than receiver, has flashed in pass game but hands still need work.

–RB De’Von Achane nice four- or five-yard gain up middle. LB Tyrel Dodson makes stop. RG Jonah Savaiinaea has nice block on ILB Jordyn Brooks.

–DT Jordan Phillips, the fifth-round pick, closes gap on RB Jaylen Wright no gain with ILBs KJ Britt and Gay on stop.

–OL Jackson Carman had nice block to spring RB Alexander Mattison. Carman is fighting to establish himself.

–Edge rusher Cameron Goode nice job setting edge on Gordon run. Goode has flashed.

–Sieler double teamed by LG Savaiinaea & LT Paul. Those two youngsters continue working well in tandem on the left side of the OL.

–QB Zach Wilson, who coach Mike McDaniel said has the No. 2 job behind Tagovailoa, and RB Jaylen Wright fumbled an exchange in a late-practice situation in a red zone drill. Wright, who showed conviction on a middle run in the same red zone period, needs to make a move in a crowded backfield picture.

Stock up: LT Patrick Paul and LG Jonah Savaiinaea. The youngsters are working well in tandem and as individuals. They had a particularly double-team block on Sieler. They’ve also done well as individuals in both 1 on 1 drills and in 11 on 11.

Stock down: TE Julian Hill, who excels as a blocker, continues to struggle as a receiver. The problem here is TE Darren Waller remains on the physically unable to perform list and the Dolphins TE Noah Fant, regarded more as a receiving TE, a couple of days ago.

  62. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

“Noah Fant is somebody, you know, that I think we had a little mutual interest,” McDaniel said. “We brought him on a visit and allowed him to measure up what he’s got going on, and seeing if it’s a fit for our team.”

“[Fant’s visit] wasn’t directly related to Darren,” McDaniel said. “It was a chance for a football player who we feel is a pretty good fit for us. We’ll see in the next couple of days if we go in that direction or not.”

    Recap from Sports Illustrated

Owner Stephen Ross was spotted at practice for the first time this summer.

Tyreek Hill was excused from practice because of personal reasons.

A new name on the injury list, or missing from practice, on this day was cornerback Kendall Sheffield. A new injury at cornerback is all the Dolphins need in light of the disappointing Kader Kohou news that Mike McDaniel delivered before practice.

Rookie safety Dante Trader Jr., a fifth-round pick from Maryland, missed a fifth consecutive practice and was joined on the absent list by Kader Kohou and B.J. Adams, along with TE Jalin Conyers and LB Dequan Jackson.

Cornerback Cam Smith was wearing a compression sleeve on his right leg.

Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle wore the orange jersey as the player of the day Tuesday.

    PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS

    — The first competitive drill again involves one-on-ones, and it’s a good start for the offensive line with Austin Jackson stoning Jaelan Phillips and Andrew Meyer stoning Benito Jones.

    — Matt Dickerson, though, blows right past Jackson Carman. Patrick Paul stonewalled Bradley Chubb, but got his hands on the jersey toward the end and that’s a hab it we’ve noticed recently that he’s got to stop or he could get flagged. Paul gets the better of Chubb in their next rep against each other.

    — Chop Robinson got inside Austin Jackson, who winds up holding him with a hook up high.

    — Larry Borom completely stuff Mohamed Kamara.

    — Jordan Phillips blew past recent acquisition Daniel Brunskill.

    — Addison West stuffed rookie Zeek Biggers.

    — Zeek Biggers ran over, and pushed down, birthday boy Josh Priebe.

    — The first play of 11-on-11 featured a strike by Tua to Waddle over the middle against tight coverage.

    — Tight end Julian Hill then drops ean easy pass while wide open in the flat following a play fake and bootleg.

    — Kenneth Grant stood his ground at the line to derail a running play for De’Von Achane.

    — Willie Gay Jr. and KJ Britt combined to stuff Jaylen Wright after a short gain on a run.

    — Grayson Murphy met Alexander Mattison at the line on a running play.

    — Channing Tindall, who’s had a solid camp, led the charge on a play where the defense stuffed Mattison.

    — Tua with another dart over the middle to complete a pass to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine despite tight coverage from Cornell Armstrong.

    — Cameron Goode forced Jaylen Wright inside on a handoff and into a group of defenders.

    — Matt Dickerson blew past Brunskill at the line and the latter responded by grabbing his jersey.

    — Gay got his hands on a Zach Wilson pass in the seam but couldn’t come down with the interception. But yet another example of him being around the ball.

    — Theo Wease Jr. dropped a high pass from Quinn Ewers on a play where a flag was thrown in the offensive backfield.

    — Murphy got to Ewers on a pass play, with Tindall not far behind.

    — Jason Sanders went 6-for-6 on field goal attempts, with two over 50. Interestingly, Ryan Stonehouse held for the two long kicks and Jake Bailey held for the other four.

    — Back to 11-on-11s, Gay gets around the corner and Zach Wilson for a would-be sack.

    — On the next play, Jordyn Brooks breaks up a Tua pass near the sideline intended for Dee Eskridge.

    — KJ Britt came flying from the middle after Tanner Conner caught a screen pass from Wilson.

    — Zach Wilson had the longest completion of practice when he hit Eskridge running down the right sideline with Jack Jones and Jordan Colbert in coverage.

    — Britt blew up the next play with a blitz up the middle … the play continued, though, with Ethan Bonner almost picking off Wilson.

    — Gay got around Kion Smith to get close to Ewers (not sure if that would have been a sack), and Ewers then step up and delivers a perfect middle-range throw to Andrew Armstrong.

    — AJ Henning stretched out to catch a pass from Ewers.

    — Matthew Butler beat Austin Jackson to get in Tua’s face and stop a pass play.

    — Tight end Pharaoh Brown bowled over DB Elijah Campbell after catching a short pass from Tua, with two other players falling after getting caught in the traffic. This is not something coaches ever want to see.

    — On a third-and-4 from the plus-6, the offense commits a false start before Tua throws incomplete in the back of the end zone. Ugh.

    — Jaylen Wright dropped a handoff from Wilson on first-and-10 from the 9 as the defensive line collapsed the O-line.

    — Wilson hands off to Wright on the next play and the line creates a nice hole over the middle.

    — Wilson can’t find anybody open and Derrick McLendon finally gets to him for a would-be sack.

Tim – He put the roster in this situation (Grier). He put the priority on getting a DL and OL, and he traded away a 3rd RD pick to get the latter. By the time he addressed the CB position it was already the 5th RD.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s the injuries. Looks like we already lost 3 for the year. Players on other teams are going down too. This is the worst part of the game.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kohou is the only injury of significance. We were going forward with a bunch of nobodies as it was

  72. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I agree on the injuries Tim, but I don’t think that we placed enough emphasis on the corner back position. Now granted teams should be built with the offensive lines and the defensive lines as a priority, but I guess that’s also the price of having so many holes to fill. You can’t fill them all. That said , if we were relying on Smith, Bonner, and Duck to step up, I think we are in big trouble.

  73. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Hard as it is to fathom, Miami’s entire starting secondary of a season ago is gone: Jalen Ramsey. Kendall Fuller. Jordan Poyer. Jevon Holland. And now Kohou. And don’t forget that the past couple of years have seen exits by Xavien Howard, Brandon Jones and DeShon Elliott.

Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick? He’s still standing. That’s the good news. But for various reasons, DBs Kendall Sheffield, Ashtyn Davis, Dante Trader Jr. and BJ Adams, plus Kohou, didn’t make it onto the practice field for Day 7. And that’s just the guys on the active roster.

The Dolphins were mere minutes into training camp, players barely stretched, when cornerback Artie Burns was slamming his helmet down in disgust. He’d suffered an ACL injury that will keep him out for the year, too. It was his second such injury. Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu didn’t even make it as far as Burns. He’s on the non-football injury list.

Might not be the best time to remind everyone that the Dolphins will be lining up against some of the league’s best quarterbacks: Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jayden Daniels, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen twice.

  74. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We traded Jalen Ramsey. Artie Burns was more than likely going to be depth at best if he even made the roster and he’s already been replaced. Kader Kohou hurts because he was going to be given a bigger role playing both the boundary and the slot at times. Otherwise, there’s really no difference in what we were going to do going forward.

No way, man! LOL! It feels just like any other day/year to me… lots of light at sunrise, followed by AM drizzle and fog. Look for severe thunderstorms in the mid-afternoon with extreme wind gusts around 60 MPH. As evening begins to set in, expect rather strong downpours of live locusts and Dobsonflies, with the occasional sighting of airplanes flying banners that read “Fire Grier NOW!”.

Then by sunset, it will start to get really dark outside. People will go to bed, dreaming of a better tomorrow. Rinse and repeat.

Cam Smith – Trader – McMorris – Marshal

and we don’t k ow how long Davis is out yet

My guess is he will start on IR, and if there is no more DB additions, the final two spots will be Elijah Campbell and Ethan Bonner

I don’t really think our secondary is as bad as people are saying

but part of that is bc I want those 4 young guys to log meaningful snaps

I think we have to really focus on bringing guys along and that means taking some risks like relaying in young players

Honestly, I don’t think ASJ is healthy yet. There should be CAUTION in signing him… wisdom would dictate a 1-year ‘prove it’ deal… anything long-term would be absolutely foolishness.

So if Grier signs ASJ at some point (I wouldn’t have a problem with it), it had BETTER be a 1-year ‘prove it’ deal.

Anything more should be considered ‘career suicide’.

    Pigster,

Don’t know if you saw my post yesterday, but Noah Fant is an even worse blocker (BOTH in pass-pro and run-blocking) than Mike Gesicki… and FAR worse, at that.

  89. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Just looked up Darren Waller’s career blocking prowess… he sucked, even in his prime.

Only reason to sign Noah Fant at this point? Only If Waller is already considered a failed project.

Fant has also visited Cincy. If Cincy signs Fant and cuts Gesicki, you sign Gesicki… because Gesicki can actually block compared to Fant and Waller. Wow, that’s sayin’ somethin’.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

To make it come full-circle, Christian Wilkins kissed Mike Gesicki when Gesicki was a member of the Patsies*.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, Wilkins was still a member of our Phins at the time.

Wilkins is a very weird individual.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Mind you… all of this Wilkins’ kissing episodes (some of which has been caught on film) was most unrequited.

  90. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wilkins also has a history of jamming his hand and fingers into players nether regions after plays. Remember the Josh Allen incident? And apparently it goes back to his playing days at Clemson.

Rock, yeah, I just reread the Belgariad, it takes me back.

Not sure if you ever read The Elenium; it’s another good Eddings series. For me it has the same feel as the Belgariad and Mallorian even though it’s set in a different world.

Practice 7: 2025 Miami Dolphins Training Camp Notebook

    Jul 30, 2025 at 06:35 PM

    Travis Wingfield

The Dolphins added new pieces to the quarterback room this offseason behind starter Tua Tagovailoa and the moves have produced positive returns early in camp.

Veteran Zach Wilson tossed the longest touchdown of the day on Wednesday, a 50-yard strike to wide receiver Dee Eskridge, while rookie Quinn Ewers continues to impress with his quick acclimation to the Dolphins scheme.

However, nothing trumps the growth of Tagovailoa. He led the NFL in three different categories each of the past three seasons (passing rating, passer yards and completion percentage), yet still has room to expand his skill set. Head Coach Mike McDaniel was asked what stands out about the sixth-year southpaw.

“The ownership and conviction of how he’s playing the position is probably responsible for not having any interceptions,” McDaniel said. “He’s being aggressive. I think the culmination of deliberate practice over the hours and hours and hours of work, his ownership of the game and his position within the offense I think is evident every time we step out on the field.”

Tagovailoa was sharp Wednesday, particularly throwing the ball into tight windows. He threw passes to blanketed wide receivers on two occasions, once to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and another to Jaylen Waddle. Already a strength of his game, Tagovailoa’s placement was on point. He consistently put the ball in the only place where his guy could make the catch.

“He’s having a great camp, throwing dots,” outside linebacker Quinton Bell said. “He’s making tough throws that’s even tougher for us to pick off. Some of the throws he’s making are just unbelievable. We’ve got guys in right positions, but the ball is just a better ball.

“Waddle was in the orange jersey (given to the practice player of the previous day), continuing his electrifying camp. He caught a pass behind the line of scrimmage and weaved his way through the blocks of Westbrook-Ikhine and tight end Pharoah Brown for a gain of at least 25 yards. The conclusion of the play is a mystery in a practice setting, but chances are that if Waddle slipped the open-field tackle attempt by safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, then the play would have been a 50-yard touchdown.

Defensive playmakers did not go unnoticed. Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. got his hands on another pass and registered a sack. Outside linebacker Chop Robinson is seven-for-seven recording sacks in the team periods of all of seven practices, and rookie defensive tackle Kenneth Grant used his rare power and speed combination to stack up multiple run stuffs.

Cornerback Ethan Bonner had two pass breakups, one during team drills and another in the one-on-one period. Fellow cornerback Storm Duck also got his hands on a Tagovailoa-to-Waddle pass.

Staying with the defensive backfield, McDaniel said Wednesday that the Dolphins will be placing Kader Kohou on injured reserve, which ends his season. Kohou has been an undrafted success story.

“I saw him ascend to a different level trying to take the reins of his career and get his game to an even higher level,” McDaniel said. “So, for that, and the timing of it, I was crushed until I talked to Kader and honestly Kader made me feel a little bit better about where he was at simply by his mindset.”

The team announced another roster move Wednesday afternoon.

We have signed OL Jalen McKenzie and placed OL Obinna Eze on the injured reserve list.

I was just listening to WQAM and Omar is just raving about Tua, how few incompletions he’s had, and zero interceptions. He said he’s going to challenge some of the top QB’s in history for completion %. Thank goodness for Joe Rose. Joe Rose said he did that last year, how about winning some big games.

Me, I’d give up all his glossy stats for some big wins and take us deep into the playoffs, maybe to the SB. Stats don’t get you squat, wins do. I hope we get that from Tua before his likely departure after the ’26 season.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I agree with you, Mike E.

Perhaps, and it might be a huge perhaps, as he develops his game more completely, he can find the LEADERSHIP qualities (and not just stats) it will take to win the games against the better teams.

It still takes 11 on the field to get it done…both sides.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I think he shrinks or is not available (by his own doing) against better teams…lol.

You can’t lead if you’re not in the game.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well you aren’t going to have playoff wins in July

There’s only one way to get better, and that’s getting better everyday

the fact that he looks good early in camp is worth celebrating

you don’t have to trade camp success for playoff success

playoff success is only going to happen as a product of camp success

It’s crazy that these kids in college are LOSING money by being drafted now. With the NIL money many guys make more as a JR in college than as a pro in the NFL.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The whole dynamic has changed. Maybe it’s a good thing, more players will get their degrees, even if the money they make in a regular career will be nothing compared to what they make as a pro, they will still have a degree and a career path.

What is there no practice today, or is it just closed to the public? Google AI says that there is practice today, but I checked on the Dolphins website and there were no tickets for any practice today. Tomorrow yes, today, no.
