State of the Dolphins

Training camp is in full swing and the fans are EXCITED! GM Chris Grier just signed FA CB Jack Jones off the street, and instantly he becomes our best CB. The fans are thrilled, “Hey Chris, great move!” Maybe Chris Grier has the jump on the NFL, the draft doesn’t mean anything, who cares about developing talent when you can just wait until a month or so before the season and pick up a couple of guys that will be better than any player you spent hours and hours of research on, scouted for hours, went to games, watched hours of film. Don’t bother, it’s not really important because if you’re patient, there will be a gem of a player available in Free Agency that you can just pick up a month or so before the season starts, and he’ll end up being one of the best players on your roster at that position. Chris Grier found the cheat code to the NFL!

Let’s put this into perspective. Stop giving Chris Grier the benefit of the doubt. The fact that Jack Jones may be our best CB is a sad commentary on how Chris Grier built this roster. I say this so often, I think you guys are numb to it, but he’s just not good. QB Tua Tagovailoa is killing it in Training Camp and the fans are going wild! Not only has he not thrown an INT but he might not even have an incompletion. Just remember, there’s no contact with the QB in Training Camp, and he’s also playing against our secondary where Jack Jones who was picked up last week is our best player. QB Tua Tagovailoa knows this offense backwards and forwards. He is a dedicated player to his craft, I’ll never slight him on that. This offense was designed for him by HC Mike McDaniel from the very beginning, and Tua can run it with his eyes closed. Unfortunately, the reality is, once the season starts and we play a better team, don’t expect the performance to be as electric as it is now in training camp.

RB Alexander Mattison has been looking much better once the pads went on. Our 6th RD Draft pick Ollie Gordon who got tons of hype has disappeared. Ollie Gordon or Mattison for that matter probably won’t see many carries with DeVon Achane and Jaylen Wright ahead of them, but as we all know, injuries run rampant in the NFL so depth is always tested. You have to carry at least 3 RB’s on the roster, so Ollie Gordon may well get cut and end up on the practice squad. So far with the WR’s, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine has been invisible. That’s a disappointment, but my guess is he’s going to get a lot of rope with the departure of TE Jonnu Smith. NWI is probably the best replacement of Jonnu as a bigger WR that can terrorize smaller DB’s or LB’s in the slot. NWI was great last season at catching TD’s, more than a 1/4 of his receptions were for 6. He had 32 receptions and 9 TD’s, and we can use that type of player with all the smaller WR’s we have like Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Malik Washington and you can add Tahj Washington too.

So what’s happening at TE? Where’s Waller? We’ll be saying that the entire 2025 season. No worries, we have guys that get hyped up every season before the actual season starts like Tanner Conner, Julian Hill but we do have physical blocking Pharoah Brown who will be in the starting lineup and that boy can block! Will Tanner Conner or Julian Hill finally step up? Julian Hill is in year 3, Tanner Conner going on year 4. I wouldn’t bet on it, but it sure would be nice for one or both of these guys to match the hype with some good play.

Listen, I know I’m negative, and if that’s a downer for you, I apologize. I just think the way we go about things in this organization is all wrong. I think Chris Grier will likely be gone after this season and he will have left the new GM, whoever that might be with a shitty cap situation and a roster with holes galore. This roster is full of injury riddled players with boom or OUT potential. One we traded for, Bradley Chubb. We drafted Jaealan Phillips, who I truly admire for his amazing resolve. He’s faced down two major injuries the last two years and comes back ready to go and just as fast and strong as he was before those injuries. God bless that kid, I root for him always. QB Tua Tagovailoa we drafted and in his own words, he knows he needs to stay out of harms way to play an entire season. Unfortunately, that type of play doesn’t usually translate to championship play, because every now and again, a QB has to extend a play, run for a few yards and challenge a defender for a first down or a trip to the end zone, and we probably won’t see those things from #1 so he can stay healthy enough to remain in the game. Some of you here compare Tua Tagovailoa favorably to Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and other top Qb’s like Josh Allen. That’s not how ANY of those guys play, but hey, you tried and you get a consolation prize for your effort, you got mentioned in this article!

I think now that we have road graders on either side of our undersized center we should be able to get some push and the QB sneak will be more successful than with just finesse OL trying to push for that yard. Tua can fall forward behind the line just as well as Brady could.

I hear Tyreek was at the Dolphins walk through practice in Chicago today. He was mostly with a trainer on the side doing running, sprinting and stretching. Good sign, he might have just tweaked a hammy.

They didn’t do any 7 on 7 or 11 on 11’s today. Trader was back working from what I hear also.

I can’t imagine Tua doing many sneaks at all. Maybe if he hadn’t been concussed 23 times. We beefed up our interior line and drafted Wright and Gordon II , as well as signing Mattison for a reason. Put Ingold in front when he isn’t concussed, and it will be the power running game on short yardages situations.

It starts with some push up front, if we get that we can whatever and it should work

stupidest play ever, is short yardage and the QB waits to see how the D is lined up, seen us do that countless times throughout the years, just get up there and go, like Brady did time after time

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tua needs to do some sneaks to keep them honest, don’t recall a QB getting clocked doing a sneak more than once or twice, just stay low and find the hole

need the entire arsenal in short yardage

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I don’t recall a QB running into a a slight DB’s chest and getting concussed either. Hand it to the RBs and let them do their jobs.

So NFLN on my tv guide shows a football life every hour for an hour tonight until midnight, when they show Cincy/Philly .. same thing Sunday when our game is supposedly live at noon … hope the games are actually broadcast .. especially ours

the chargers lost Rashawn Slater for the season

    so it’s not just us

  9. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    piggy,

That’s why I always remind people that we WILL have to deal with injuries. It’s not a matter of if. It’s just part of the NFL these days. You need depth because it’s gonna play. We gotta start consistently drafting better.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we’ve been drafting ok, we need numbnuts to play them and not worry about the results so much, especially early in games, 2nd half is winning time

well so and so isn’t ready, well get them ready or run the plays they can handle

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think we’ve draft3d okay too… but we have had some notable misses in the 2nd round recently

Cam Smith and Eichenberg come to mind

but I guess they can turn it around

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

half of Dolphins Twitter already hung themselves…lol

  10. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Randy,

I absolutely agree with ya on depth and consistently drafting better.

However — what you and Mike E aren’t adequately addressing — is that we had HELLA DEPTH on both sides of the ball in ’22 and ’23. The injury bug bit so deep that we had to sign street FAs just to fill our roster late in those seasons.

Is it the water in Miami? Is it poor strength and conditioning from our coaching staff? Is it ‘speed over strength’? Or is it ‘The Joe Robbie Curse’?

Whatever it is, we can’t seem to overcome as much… over two owners, multiple coaching staffs, many different players from then to now, and different styles of playing the game.

For every player that goes down for another team, we have 3 players go down for us. That’s consistency over a long time frame. I’ll see if I can chart this matter in the coming days…

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t think it’s really worth having Tua doing any sneaks. It’s just not worth it. Plus, could you imagine the shit show if he actually got concussed again doing it? The team wants no part of that.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The only way he should ever be running is if the middle of the line parts like the red sea or he rolls out and there was wide open spaces to the side He rolls out too. Of course, then he’s going to need to slide or run out of bounds, and based on what he’s shown in the past I’m not confident he could do that successfully.

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I hear Vikings fans and even my chef’s fan friends complain about injuries just like folks here do. Lol

This team hasn’t won a playoff game since my prostate was the correct size. It’s not about one year or another.

  13. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

their teams have told them to be careful out of the pocket and across the LOS, Jackson, Allen, Mahomes, Hurts, Herbert…

couple of years ago no one here was trading Tua for Lamar, after Lamar had his latest injury

what they’re doing is mostly situational running, big games Bills vs Fins Allen is running (jets and cheats can beat the bills occasionally, because Allen doesn’t run much against them) and 4th qtrs and playoffs

Tua running against the bills in a blowout was asinine

Mahomes in playoffs and 4th qtr is unstoppable, when he’s running, same with Allen and Jackson, difference is Allen and Jackson stop themselves from time to time on the biggest stage with throwing inaccuracies

Tua must run like those guys do, only 4th qtrs in close games and playoffs, he’s got to pick his spots and be careful

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

when I say Tua needs to run like those guys I mean the spots, not the bull running of Allen or escape ability of Jackson

if Tua runs controlled at the right times as mentioned, we have a chance in playoffs, if he gets hurt we weren’t winning anyways with him sitting back

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The problem Steve is he isn’t a smart runner. Even if he picks his spots, eventually he’s going to make a dumb decision and get injured. The past shows us that.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

he’ll have to figure it out, and we’ll have to live with what happens while he’s figuring it out

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

We will, and we have: it’s called concussions!

  14. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

And yup , no game on NFLN 😡

  15. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Anthony Richardson was hurt in his preseason game tonight

    it’s a dislocated pinky….lol

but it may keep him out a little while

we may be facing Daniel Jones in week 1

  16. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Toba, not sure why you did not get the game. When I came home from dinner last night the Colts/Ravens game was on NFLN.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

When I look at their TV schedule, it shows all the games I listed for live broadcast.

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Normally happens when TSN picks up a game it is blacked out on NFLN, but ravens game wasn’t broadcast at all .. ah well. Watch the late Sunday repeat of our game I guess 🤷‍♂️

  17. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

So this is why no one signed him. I guess it wasn’t the money. He’s not ready yet.

G Will Hernandez is signing a one-year deal with the Cardinals, NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported. Hernandez spent the last three seasons in Arizona but is coming off a torn ACL that ended his 2024 campaign prematurely. The Cardinals placed Hernandez on the physically unable to perform list upon announcing his signing.

  18. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Seven players across the NFL were put on IR yesterday and another 2 were released with an injury settlement. Slater was the only starter. Though 4 of the remaining 6 who went to IR were depth players and expected to make their teams 53.

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think we all will be watching how our DB’s do this weekend. Also, on D I am looking forward to watching DT’s Grant and Phillips.

Actually, we should be keeping an eye on the whole DT group. I think there is a huge competition for DT5 between Dickerson, Butler, Stille and Biggers. I think Dickerson might be the front runner right now. Biggers may be on the outside looking in because I think DT5 will be a 3/4 DE type. Especially since we have Benito and Phillips at NT with Grant who can also play NT. We will also see a good bit of having Chubb, Phillips and Chop on the field at the same time.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we may not see any of Chubb, Chop and Phillips, a play or 2 for Chubb and Phillips if anything, Chop may get some action

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Oh definitely, I was talking about during the reg season and why we will keep another 3/4 DE type as DT5 instead of a true interior DT like Biggers.
