State of the Dolphins

Training camp is in full swing and the fans are EXCITED! GM Chris Grier just signed FA CB Jack Jones off the street, and instantly he becomes our best CB. The fans are thrilled, “Hey Chris, great move!” Maybe Chris Grier has the jump on the NFL, the draft doesn’t mean anything, who cares about developing talent when you can just wait until a month or so before the season and pick up a couple of guys that will be better than any player you spent hours and hours of research on, scouted for hours, went to games, watched hours of film. Don’t bother, it’s not really important because if you’re patient, there will be a gem of a player available in Free Agency that you can just pick up a month or so before the season starts, and he’ll end up being one of the best players on your roster at that position. Chris Grier found the cheat code to the NFL!

Let’s put this into perspective. Stop giving Chris Grier the benefit of the doubt. The fact that Jack Jones may be our best CB is a sad commentary on how Chris Grier built this roster. I say this so often, I think you guys are numb to it, but he’s just not good. QB Tua Tagovailoa is killing it in Training Camp and the fans are going wild! Not only has he not thrown an INT but he might not even have an incompletion. Just remember, there’s no contact with the QB in Training Camp, and he’s also playing against our secondary where Jack Jones who was picked up last week is our best player. QB Tua Tagovailoa knows this offense backwards and forwards. He is a dedicated player to his craft, I’ll never slight him on that. This offense was designed for him by HC Mike McDaniel from the very beginning, and Tua can run it with his eyes closed. Unfortunately, the reality is, once the season starts and we play a better team, don’t expect the performance to be as electric as it is now in training camp.

RB Alexander Mattison has been looking much better once the pads went on. Our 6th RD Draft pick Ollie Gordon who got tons of hype has disappeared. Ollie Gordon or Mattison for that matter probably won’t see many carries with DeVon Achane and Jaylen Wright ahead of them, but as we all know, injuries run rampant in the NFL so depth is always tested. You have to carry at least 3 RB’s on the roster, so Ollie Gordon may well get cut and end up on the practice squad. So far with the WR’s, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine has been invisible. That’s a disappointment, but my guess is he’s going to get a lot of rope with the departure of TE Jonnu Smith. NWI is probably the best replacement of Jonnu as a bigger WR that can terrorize smaller DB’s or LB’s in the slot. NWI was great last season at catching TD’s, more than a 1/4 of his receptions were for 6. He had 32 receptions and 9 TD’s, and we can use that type of player with all the smaller WR’s we have like Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Malik Washington and you can add Tahj Washington too.

So what’s happening at TE? Where’s Waller? We’ll be saying that the entire 2025 season. No worries, we have guys that get hyped up every season before the actual season starts like Tanner Conner, Julian Hill but we do have physical blocking Pharoah Brown who will be in the starting lineup and that boy can block! Will Tanner Conner or Julian Hill finally step up? Julian Hill is in year 3, Tanner Conner going on year 4. I wouldn’t bet on it, but it sure would be nice for one or both of these guys to match the hype with some good play.

Listen, I know I’m negative, and if that’s a downer for you, I apologize. I just think the way we go about things in this organization is all wrong. I think Chris Grier will likely be gone after this season and he will have left the new GM, whoever that might be with a shitty cap situation and a roster with holes galore. This roster is full of injury riddled players with boom or OUT potential. One we traded for, Bradley Chubb. We drafted Jaealan Phillips, who I truly admire for his amazing resolve. He’s faced down two major injuries the last two years and comes back ready to go and just as fast and strong as he was before those injuries. God bless that kid, I root for him always. QB Tua Tagovailoa we drafted and in his own words, he knows he needs to stay out of harms way to play an entire season. Unfortunately, that type of play doesn’t usually translate to championship play, because every now and again, a QB has to extend a play, run for a few yards and challenge a defender for a first down or a trip to the end zone, and we probably won’t see those things from #1 so he can stay healthy enough to remain in the game. Some of you here compare Tua Tagovailoa favorably to Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and other top Qb’s like Josh Allen. That’s not how ANY of those guys play, but hey, you tried and you get a consolation prize for your effort, you got mentioned in this article!

seems had we made the playoffs last year we may still have Calais and Ramsey, but would we be better off?

I think not. With all the stories that came out about culture and softness, that we may have never heard about, even though we knew existed, change wouldn’t have been imminent

    DL/OL transformations maybe don’t happen

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Without Ramsey and Snowman the locker room seems to be whole again

MM has gotten the message to get a backbone

Someone finally stood up to Tyreek, maybe he’ll grow up🤣

and best of all we got rid of that under achieving STs coach

I just saw/heard a trade rumor. ‘Reek for Scary Terry McLaurin and a high draft pick (2nd rounder).

As with any rumor, take it with a grain of salt. Would y’all do it, I ask? If I felt convinced that Da’ Penguin could be a top-flight WR1, I think I would.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I don’t think we’ll do it, because like Al Davis (RIP), we’re so overly obsessed with SPEED.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

On the other hand, we can remove a headache, create more cap space (McLaurin can’t command ‘Reek $$$), and add to our ’26 draft war chest. If Coach McD (or GM Grier) doesn’t survive this season, our next HC (and/or GM) is going to LOVE the draft picks we have.

And let it be known: Scary Terry is DAMN good… he’s just not a track star like ‘Reek.

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Per Kyle Crabbs, Sieler’s contract will make him around the 9th or 10th highest paid (per year) DT if his 44m guaranteed money is fully guaranteed at signing. That’s when you add it to the guaranteed money he has already gotten from his last contract and subsequent restructure that still has to be accounted for on the cap.

If the 44m is not fully guaranteed at signing, then he will be about the 14th highest paid DT per year.

Example: Zach Allen just signed a 4 year deal with Denver through 2029 for 102m with 69.5m guaranteed but only 44.25m was guaranteed at signing. The rest of the guaranteed money doesn’t become guaranteed until later in the contract. The team can release or trade him and not have to pay the rest of the guaranteed money if it happens before it becomes guaranteed. It allows a team to move on from someone sooner than later and clear cap. Even though he just signed the contract, Denver could post 6/1 trade him in 2026, only be out 31m in dead money spread over 2 years and clear 17.2m in 2026 cap. Smart contract. Grier needs to take notes.

Fully guaranteed or not, I think Zach is worth it. Crabbs said it best, “If you’re not going to do it for Sieler, who would you do it for?”

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

M13, I would not do it. Granted the money would work out. It would only cost an extra 1.33m cap hit as we would be on the hook for McLaurin’s 16.3m (base salary + in game bonus) but we would clear 14.97m in cap trading Tyreek.

Problem is Mclaurin wants to get paid one last big contract. I think he is on the downside of his career as he will be 30yo this season and not worth the last big payday he wants.

I would rather have the 31yo Tyreek headache for one more year who still has elite speed and, finally, after 3 years says he now knows the offense. McLaurin at 30yo, if traded is still going to want a new big deal and it will take too much time for him to fully learn the offense.

Also, the Commanders don’t have a 2026 2nd round pick. If it is for a 2027 2nd, I am definitely out.

Weaver said Kenneth Grant is everything they thought he would be, especially since the pads have come on. Good sign!

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The Miami Dolphins are bringing back another former player at a position of need.

The team is signing tight end Chris Myarick to a contract, Myarick’s agent, Paul Sheehy, posted on social media Monday. Myarick started his career with the Dolphins when he signed with the team as a UDFA out of Temple University following the 2019 draft.

The Dolphins likely need an additional body in the tight end room due to some injuries. 2025 UDFA Jalin Conyers hasn’t practiced in at least four days and has been spotted at training camp walking around with a boot.

Additionally, offseason trade acquisition Darren Waller remains on the physically unable to perform list as he returns to football shape after coming out of retirement. That leaves the Dolphins with just Pharoah Brown, Julian Hill, Hayden Rucci, and Tanner Conner as healthy tight ends.

Myarick spent the 2019 season on the practice squad before appearing in three games for the team in 2020. He didn’t record any stats in those appearances, and he signed with the New York Giants the following offseason.

He spent two seasons in New York, playing 24 games and making 11 starts. He finished with 10 catches for 82 yards, but Myarick has always been known more as a blocker. In fact, he was even listed as a fullback during his final season with the Giants.

Myarick last played in 2022 and has since bounced around the league. He spent most of the 2023 season on injured reserve (the Giants cut him in November) and then had brief stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans in 2024.

Hayden’s younger brother Nolan (I bet the Penn State guys on here don’t realize) is slotted to be the starting RT for Penn State this year per Ourlads. Nolan is 6’8, 317 pounds and his preseason draft grade per Draftbuzz has him as a potential 6th round pick and PFF says potential 4th.

re-watched his PS game highlights last vs Bucs, where he had several catches

his best asset is blocking, he’s like Julian Hill without all the assholiness, he doesn’t run much of a route tree, just slides open at times, not much YAC

his value catching passes would be the unexpected variety, the free catches, when no one is guarding him, but does have decent hands

Rucci and Pharoah Brown in Hill out, is how I see it, someone there loves Hill, like they loved our previous ST coach

  17. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t think leverage is an issue for Jordan Phillips. He was a wrestler also.

    Some of his draft positives:

Named to Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List with jaw-dropping weight room numbers – 665-pound squat and 365-pound power clean showcase rare explosive power for the position.

Demonstrates exceptional wrestling-based leverage technique – consistently works under offensive linemen’s pads while maintaining balance through contact.

Displays advanced anchor ability against double teams – drops his knee and uses tremendous lower body strength to hold point of attack.

Though, in the negatives, it did say that sometimes he doesn’t keep his pad level consistent and may surrender his leverage advantage.

    —————

IMO, he just needs more experience.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think he’s ready to take over the Hill role, not sure what that is since Brown will be first in line with anything blocking and Smythe won’t be occupying any space

    Travis Wingfield

    @WingfieldNFL

Practice No. 11 is in the books, lots of notes:

The deep balls were raining – Tua hit two of them and missed two of them. The completions were 50 yard scoring strikes, one to Reek, one to Malik Washington. The Reek one he was wide open coming across the field. The Malik ball was a 1v1 situation on Kendall Sheffield, Malik stacked him, but Sheffield was right there, perfect ball in stride, gone. That was in a 2-minute period and came one play after an absolute rip to Waddle for 15, again with Sheffield right there. Sheffield’s body language indicated he had the feeling of – what the hell can I do here? The two misses were to Tyreek, who was getting open deep frequently. One ball was long, one was short.

Ewers hit Theo Wease for a 25-yard TD on a nice little double move and well placed touch pass over the top of Isaiah Johnson in team.

Chop Robinson continues doing his thing – he shut down the entire Zach Wilson led two-minute attack with two sacks. He wins so quickly sometimes that it looks like they schemed up a free run, but it’s just him running around people with a lightning quick get-off.

There was a red zone period where all three QBs had to throwaway/eat multiple plays. I think this was indicative of the defensive staff’s emphasis on playing on a string on the back end and playing to their rules.

The pockets were good, the coverage was just better. And if this D can hold teams to RZ fields, with this Dolphins offense, good things will happen come gameday.

De’Von Achane just keeps getting better as a route runner. He had a couple today where I had to check to make sure it wasn’t one of the wide outs.

Jaylen Wright had a pair of TD runs in the 10-12 yard range – really nice vertical acceleration off a one-cut and wiggling through the secondary.

Tanner Conner caught another handful of passes including a nice rip from Tua up the sideline that went for about 15 – could’ve been a 25 yard TD if he could make the SAF miss in open space

Zach Sieler signs a mega extension yesterday, gets the orange jersey today, and keeps on dominating. I had him for one sack and an assist on another.

Jordan Phillips’ power is undeniable every few reps (I imagine it’s when the technique is just right). He gets knock back that really jumps out at you – did it twice in team today. I did see Jonah Savaiinaea jump set him and give him a good displacement strike – that’s been a fun battle to watch.

The interior three get a lot of surge in the inside run game – I saw three downhill runs that went for 5 yards with good LOS displacement behind Jonah, Brew and James I thought Patrick McMorris and Elijah Campbell had really good practices both in their zone drops and playing the run and short passing game from depth.

Grayson Murphy continues to make plays – he had a sack on Tua in low red zone with a speed move on Larry Borom. He was in on Wilson earlier with two pressures in red zone work. Then he finished the day with a sack on Quinn Ewers to end his red zone end of game period.

Mo Kamara had a run stuff and a sack – I thought that was his best day so far. Jordan Phillips had a rep where he re-set Brunskill a couple yards in the backfield. Every day we see him do that where the technique is perfect and he uncorks all that power.

Derrick McClendon had two sacks on Zach Wilson during the team periods. That’s it – podcast coming your way with more coverage from the day here at Dolphins camp.

Savaiinaea, paired with free agency addition James Daniels, gives the Dolphins two big-bodied anchors to work with in the interior.

Smith told reporters that the aforementioned linemen’s presence allows him to try out different schemes and concepts. It has him looking forward to the coming tests against Chicago, Detroit, and Jacksonville.

“I think ultimately you play to the strengths of the guys you got and what do they do well, and when you have guards that you’re very confident in, it allows you to do different things as far as attacking different parts of the structure of the defense,” he said. “The beginning parts of camp went good especially, and the next couple of weeks we’re excited as we change the opponent.”

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am liking what I am hearing about PP’s development and the new guards potential, but I am still very concerned about the depth at Oline. One or two minor injuries can really change the complexion of the offense throughout the year. Our center who is small hasn’t been practicing because of “soft tissue” issues. Those types of issues can really stick around and nag players. Our back up center is now injured and was not doing well in 1 on 1’s against our D players.

Our RT is always injured it seems and the backups at tackle are being torched by the edge rushers. (not just the starters! Grayson Murphy and Goode are having very good matchups against them)

I just wish the starters could be counted on, because I can see the team playing MUCH better than last season, IF the 5 starters are healthy…IF.

    https://www.si.com/nfl/dolphins/news/miami-dolphins-defensive-back-draft-history

    ——–

I’m talking strictly about CBs, my guy. Our recent history of drafting CBs (post-1998) SUCKS! PARTICULARLY on days 1 and 2 of the Draft.

There is one exception in Vontae Davis (RIP). We gave up on him too early, as he made two Pro-Bowls with the Colts after we traded him.

  33. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Mike Hilton’s contract hit the books. It only impacted the top 51 cap by 167K which just happens to be the amount of his signing bonus. Hilton made 6m per year the last 4 years with the Bengals.

He basically got the same deal as Mattison, Willie Gay and KJ Britt. They all have a mere cap hit of 1,197,500. At this point in camp, I would call at least 3 of the 4 free agent bargains in Hilton, Mattison and Gay.

  34. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I saw a segment on ESPN about how the Colts are rebuilding Anthony Richardson’s mechanics from the feet up and trying to teach him the new offense which will a lot more under center and less shotgun / spread offense. (and that he has been struggling with it these first two weeks of camp. He got a lot of hype coming out of college, but has not been great with about 50% completions and more interceptions than TD’s and a career passer rating of 67.8 so far in his career, so I am not to concerned about our first game of the season so much.

HOWEVER, our defensive backs really have me concerned due to lack of talent and lack of depth. We really need to start the season off hot if we want to make the playoffs.

We need to take advantage of Richardson, Drake Maye, Justin Fields (who has looked like shit in camp so far according to the press) Bryce Young before we get deeper in the season and face some probowl QB’s.

I have been a homer for so long that it’s hard for me to be a hater sometimes. LOL

I look at just the QB’s we have to go up against in order (if they stay healthy and young guys don’t beat out some older guys and this doesn’t look too difficult

    Here is who they face in order;

Richardson, Drake Maye, Josh Allen, Justin Fields, Bryce Young, Justin Herbert, Joe Flacco (or Dillon Gabriel or Sanders doesn’t matter), Kirk Cousins, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Jayden Daniels, Tyler Shough, Justin Fields, Aaron Rogers, Joe Burrow, Baker Mayfield, Drake Maye

At a glance the second half of the season LOOKS much tougher than the beginning. But then, they are the Dolphins and they can make shit QB’s look like all-stars sometimes

LOL he is stuttering in texts it’s so bad. (I have never lost to him in Madden. Eagles vs Dolphins) I said, yeah, that sounds a bit high for the Eagles…

he went on to list all the players they gained vs the ones they lost and I’ve been gas lighting him for 20 minutes. He is BLOWING my phone up now. LOL

My final text to him was “Knock Knock” then “come on, you know the answer to this one, Knock Knock”

    “Sigh…Who’s there?”

    “Owen”

    “Sigh….Owen Who?”

    “Owen SIX BITCH! Hahahahahahahaha”

  38. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Chris Perkins agrees with us (me) on the depth situation.

    Offensive line: D

The top healthy reserves are guard-tackle Kion Smith, center Andrew Meyer, tackle Larry Borom, center-guard Daniel Brunskill and guard-tackle Jackson Carman. Guard-center Liam Eichenberg, who is on the physically-unable-to-perform list, is also in that group. But they’re all troubling. The reserves haven’t had a good camp backing up the likely starters — center Aaron Brewer, left guard Jonah Savaiinaea, right guard James Daniels, left tackle Patrick Paul and Jackson, who is expected to return from his lower extremity injury by the opener. The Dolphins might eventually have to go outside the roster for help. The upcoming joint practices with Chicago and Detroit will be telling.

    Defensive backs: C-

The reserve safeties — Elijah Campbell, Ashtyn Davis, Jordan Colbert and John Saunders Jr., in particular — greatly improve the grade here. Patrick McMorris has been low key and Dante Trader Jr. has been sidelined. The cornerbacks are a different story. They haven’t been good. Likely starter Storm Duck has been money. The others — most notably Kendall Sheffield, Cam Smith and newcomer Jack Jones — have struggled to find their footing to this point.  In the slot, newcomers Mike Hilton and Cornell Armstrong have flashed. Safety Iffy Melinfonwu, the projected starter beside Minkah Fitzpatrick, has been limited due to recently coming off the non-football injury list.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ifedi and Kion Smith are better than any backup OT we got last year

pushing Eichenberg to backup and Brunskill ditto for interior

none of these 4 are really that good, but it surely beats the depth, that played last

at DB I’m not worried yet, need to see them play first

Jones/Hilton/Minkah have changed things for me lately, add in the superior mental pro in Duck and our passrush and I think we’ll be Ok, C- is about right

Chubb, Phillips and Chop, if healthy and we don’t kill the passrush this year

Sieler should also feast, with the QBs stepping up

  42. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

watching what little highlights I could find on Kendall Sheffield, he plays slot and outside

he’s got blazing speed, looks best playing zone, running downhill

    5’10 200lbs he’s a hitter too

think we see a lot of our DBs play early in the season, before they settle on guys, with Minkah being the one set in stone

  43. Randy's avatar Randy says:

So they’re finally getting the idea that having two big guards in front of Tua is a good idea? Didn’t people suggest they do that when he was drafted like the Saints did for Brees? Oh well, it only took them 6 years. Numb nuts.

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Omar talking about how great Ewers has been. That’s great, hope he keeps it up. Unless we have a season I can’t fathom and Tua stays healthy and plays well enough to not only get us in to the playoffs but win one or two, we’ll have a new GM here with fresh eyes that won’t be tied to Tua’s success or failure and will just be searching for a QB for this franchise. Someone compared Tua/Ewers to Garropolo/Purdy. I think that’s a legit comparison

  45. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

I can see us winning 10 games. Our schedule is favorable and that matters. We also have guys who may have something to prove, and that can lead to big years if channeled right. I can also see us winning 8 games.

I just think for us to be successful…meaning we go deep in the playoffs….everything has to go right for us. For me, it’ll come down to who performs and how we perform in big games. It’s not about stats. Win.

I still need to see a whole lot of guys actually perform at a level needed to win championships by showing they can win big games earlier on. Leadership is shown when you’re at your worst or challenged the most. Bullshit walks man.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t see it. We’re going to be relying on a lot of guys with question marks. Tua, Chubb, Phillips. Grant on the D-line, Savaiinaea on the O-line and potentially the backup RT if Jackson needs to miss time. The CB’s could be a mess, and I know a lot of folks here think Minkah’s gonna be an All Pro again this season and I just don’t think he will be. I have a helluva lot more doubts than I do expectations.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

you don’t see it, because you won’t allow yourself to

everything you write seems to be based on wanting MM and Grier fired, you’re tired of taking the cheese and that’s fine, just don’t expect to pull anyone down, that doesn’t feel that way

Steve – you guys buy the hype every single year. Go ahead, I’m not stopping you, just cautioning you so the disappointment isn’t too painful.

  49. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

NtI don’t buy the if everything goes right thinking

look at the last 3 years, everything wasn’t close to going right and we still had 2 playoff berths and 1 elimination on the last day

2022, nothing went right at the end of the season and we limped into playoffs

2023, great start again injuries derailed

2024, Tua out 6 weeks was too much to overcome, along with horrible OL

we don’t need everything to go right, we just can’t have too many things go wrong, especially at end of season

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

And I don’t buy that Tua all of a sudden is going to play well against better teams, that Chubb and Phillips are going to stay healthy, and that our offense is going to resemble 2023. I’d bet more like last season and that’s just not good enough, Tua or no Tua

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

you’re correct, Tua isn’t going to all of a sudden play better against good teams, he’s going to play similar to how he plays, the team around is going to play better and its going to reflect in him

Chubb and Phillips will likely get some bumps and bruises, as we’ve already seen, but the law of averages says neither goes on IR

agreed the O won’t resemble 2023, the league has closed that, what I expect them to resemble is a more balanced attack, with some actual blocking, some power short yardage running, and enough 3rd down threats that can make plays to keep drives moving

  50. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

if everything goes right we’re challenging for the division

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

what if our passrush resembles some of those early years Parson’s ones in Dallas, that might be going too far, but if close that’s pretty good. Sieler, Grant, Phillips, Chubb and Chop ain’t chopped liver

what if our OL comes together, and we can run the ball like early 2023 and have a decent 3rd/4th and short conversion rate, not a stretch to think it could happen with our 3 new monster OL

what if Tyreek removes the reek from his behavior🤣

not exactly everything, if these 3 likely to happen events do happen we’ll be fighting the Bills for AFCE

  51. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    We will find out.

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right now all the local guys are reporting positivity, the new attitude of all the players, it’s early on and we’re just playing against our own units. We might not get any better idea playing the Bears who are awful and their QB Caleb Williams seems to not know the offense. He might have more physical skills than Tua but if he doesn’t know what he’s doing, that doesn’t help his team much. We’ll potentially get a better idea against the Lions, but preseason is weird and we might not really see much from either team because who knows who is playing?

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

It’s always sunshine and rainbows during offseason workouts , training camp, and preseason. We won’t know who this team is until the regular season starts, and truly in late November and December . They can go 6-2 and I’m not going to feel confident until they show they can finish a season strong.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We won’t be going 6-2, although I suppose anything is possible. We could still finish 8-9 even so.

  53. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Reality tends to set in sooner than later, and the big boy teams will probably lay to waste all this early enthusiasm y’all have here. Could be back to back losses against BUF and NE and then who knows, maybe even the lowly Jets knock off us too. Then you guys will be right back on my side that this shitshow needs to go!

  54. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

preseason games, while good for the teams to evaluate the back half of their rosters really tell us very little about the way a team will play in season. Different coaches approach the games in different ways, but for the most part it’s the backups that play the most and there is so much mixing and matching going on we as fans cannot get a good feel for how a team will perform when the games become real.

We can’t even watch and say “wow, our backups are better than their backups, so our depth is good”

It just doesn’t work out that way.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Many times I’ve witnessed a team win all their preseason games and then only win 4-8 games in season, same for the opposite. I’ve seen many teams lose most or all of the preseason games and then win 10-14 games in season.

Jonah Savaiinaea’s anchor is fun, and kind of comical, to watch. Benito Jones tried to bull rush him and Jonah looked relatively unbothered, entirely unmoved. That’s against a powerful, powerful man he’s locking out on.

Both the undefeated SB champion Dolphins and the reg. season undefeated Pets went .500 in the preseason. (Interestingly, the Dolphins had 6 preseason games in ’72, I didn’t know that.)

  59. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Another key OL down for awhile, from MM’s morning presser:

Offensive lineman Andrew Meyer, who McDaniel says was having a great camp, will be out for weeks. “One of the top performers, one of the top guys from Year 1 to Year 2 that has made tremendous strides.”

Cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. will be back at practice on a limited basis Wednesday.

With Darren Waller, “it’s a little tricky” because you’re bringing a guy back and do you want to bring him back for a joint practice? Sounds like his practice debut is coming sooner rather than later.

Fullback Alec Ingold remains in concussion protocol, but is doing well.

Grayson Murphy has “natural close-quarter contact, vision, bend” qualities as a pass rusher. Comes down to fitting those traits into his responsibilities on defense.

Jaelan Phillips talked about Patrick Paul’s trash talking Tuesday and how he can back it up this year, and McDaniel says Paul is out to prove something — like so many other players. McDaniel says his trash talking hasn’t improved as much as his game.

Larry Borom has been getting first-team reps in the absence of Austin Jackson and McDaniel calls those “invaluable.” McDaniel says there are elements of his game the Dolphins felt really could grow, and that’s made him a good fit. “He came with a chip on his shoulder and has exceeded expectations.” (BBM says, apparently expectations weren’t very high then)

Regarding the offensive line as a whole and how it’s done picking up the variety of blitzes DC Anthony Weaver has thrown at him, McDaniel talks about the progress he’s seen, “nice evolution in camp.”

Asked about the group of safeties, McDaniel calls the position “super competitive” and talks about a diligent play after play approach. “It’s going to be super, super competitive” and it’s going to be a group where guys will have to earn their separation from the pack.

Zach Wilson has had overall a solid training camp performance from this vantage point, and McDaniel says his play “has caught the attention of a lot of his teammates.” Praises Wilson to quickly adapting to what the Dolphins have asked him to do.

    And, blah, blah, blah

Looks like Waller may come off PUP next week and start practicing.

Embree: “The first thing that really impressed me about him is his ability to quickly grasp the offense,” Embree said. “He has a pretty good grasp of the details initially starting out. That’s huge because that’ll allow us to do more with him and move him around in the formations and all that.

Also said Tua and Waller were throwing a good bit before TC and him going on PUP.

  62. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

With Brewer not ready, Meyer and Eich out, it looks like it will be UDFA rookie Addison West and Brunskill at center this weekend.

We’ve got a Chop win on Patrick Paul in 1v1s. Sets him wide then swipes the hands away to cross face. Paul nearly recovered but Chop was too quick back inside.

Interesting. I’ve tried to find sports talk radio from Miami to listen to but I’m not smart enough to figure it out. So, everything I hear about the Dolphins is local or mass media. Everybody I hear is ripping us apart. Nobody thinks we’re going to do much this year. People are shaking their heads at stuff MM and players have done.

  65. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t think it bodes well that Ingold is in concussion protocol. He could be a big part of a return to a running game. FBs are the guys who probably take on more speed hits than anybody. Concussions are always a big concern for FBs.

  66. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, who began camp on NFI, took some team reps for the first time.

Wide receiver Malik Washington wore the orange jersey.

Safety Elijah Campbell again wore a red (no-contact) jersey but took part in team periods.

    — The first competitive drill was one-on-ones, and once again we focused on the pass rushers going against the offensive linemen, and it was a pretty decisive win for the offensive linemen.

    — Patrick Paul once again dominated this period, whether he was going up against Bradley Chubb or Chop Robinson.

    — Jonah Savaiinaea also had a couple of good reps where he stopped fellow rookie Kenneth Grant.

    — The one defensive lineman who stood out here was Matthew Butler, and the one offensive lineman who struggled a bit was Daniel Brunskill

    — The one reps of receivers against defensive backs that caught our attention was Storm Duck having great coverage against Tahj Washington and knocking the ball in the air, only to have Washington come down with the catch. Tahj Washington has looked good all camp.

    — On the first set of 11-on-11s, Larry Borom had a good block against Zach Sieler to spring De’Von Achane for a nice gain on a run.

    — Minkah Fizpatrick blew up a designed pass to Malik Washington off a rollout by Tua when he didn’t bite on the play fake and ran with the receiver to the outside. Fitzpatrick has looked great all camp.

    — Tua’s play of his first series was a nifty completion down the field to Achane near the right sideline.

    — There was a flag for holding on a run by Alexander Mattison, though we couldn’t see who was the offender.

    — Willie Gay Jr., who has made a lot of plays as a pass defender in camp, came up to meet Mattison around the line of scrimmage and Channing Tindall followed by meeting Ollie Gordon II in the backfield.

    — Zach Wilson misfired on his first pass attempt when he threw too far ahead of Tahj Washington on a crosser.

    — Quinn Ewers’ first snap saw him roll out and throw a strike to Theo Wease Jr. on the move for about a 15-yard completion.

    — Gordon took advantage of an overpursuing defense to cut back into a gaping hole on the right side of the offense for a sizable gain.

    — Ben Stille got pressure on Ewers after outside pressure forced him to move in the pocket.

    — Tua overthrew Jaylen Waddle near the right sideline after Pharaoh Brown picked up a blitzing Fitzpatrick.

    — Kenneth Grant literally threw Savaiinaea to the ground on an inside run by Achane that didn’t go anywhere. Wow!

    — Tua then hit Waddle over the middle on a slant, which has been far and away the most productive play throughout camp.

    — After Tua failed. to connect with Dee Eskridge, Chop Robinson got to him very quickly for what likely would have been a sack in a game setting.

    — With traffic around him, Wilson begins his next series with a beautiful floater downfield to Erik Ezukanma over Isaiah Johnson.

    — There’s major pressure on Wilson on the next play after his hurried throw falls incomplete, he looks down at his right leg, though he stays in the action. Wilson then hurries a screen to Malik Washington and throws the ball at his feet for a bad incompletion.

    — Gay gets past Ryan Hayes to come next to Wilson and celebrates a maybe sack, but he was far enough outside that Wilson simply moved up the pocket. Called that one premature celebration by Gay.

    — Eskridge makes an acrobatic catch on a deep pass from Wilson thrown a bit behind, though this was another example of a play that would ended differently in a game because there was pressure everywhere and the pass rushers stopped short of him.

    — Pharaoh Brown with another good job on blitz pick-up, but Ewers misfires on a throw for Andrew Armstrong.

    — Rookie Ethan Robinson comes over to knock away a Ewers pass in the flat to Monaray Baldwin that came too late and was a bit too far ahead of him.

  67. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    — The next set of team reps, a hurry-up drill, begins with Minkah Fitzpatrick with a free run at Tua on a blitz, followed by an incompletion when Storm Duck knocks down a pass intended for Eskridge.

    — On Wilson’s first snap, Quinton Bell gets to him for another would-be sack as the defense continues to dominate.

    — But on the next play, Wilson has a nice completion to Eskridge near the sideline for about 20 yards.

    — After Wilson scrambles for a first down, Gay gets to him quickly on the next play for a sack or to force a throw-away.

    — Armstrong failed to hang on to a 20-yard pass from Wilson after safety Jordan Colbert hit him in the open field.

    — On third-and-10, Gay (him again) bats down a pass around the line of scrimmage.

    — Jason Sanders ends the drive by making a 53-yard field goal with Jake Bailey as the holder.

    — In a punting session, looks like (I have a bad angle) Ryan Stonehouse just had a punt bounce at the opponent 1-yard line. … Couple of plays later, Jake Bailey gets it out at about the 3-yard line.

    — Next set of team reps begins with a screen to Waddle, but the defense is all over it.

    — On a short pass to Julian Hill, Jordyn Brooks comes up and knocks him to the ground with a shoulder and then flexes.

    — The offense gets replaced after a three-and-out, following a short completion to Achane.

    — Chop Robinson gets by Germain Ifedi to meet Jaylen Wright in the backfield.

    — Quinton Bell has a free run at Wilson, but the play continues and his pass for Tahj Washington is overthrown and picked off by Kendall Sheffield. Again, the defense is dominating this day — bad.

    — Jaelan Phillips meets Mattison in the backfield on a running play.

    — Mattison gets a nice hole over the middle on the next play. Looks like guard Braeden Daniels had a nice clearing block.

    — The next play is a nightmare for the offense as Daniel Brunskill sails a shotgun snap over the head of Wilson.

    — Pressure from Bell, who got around Ryan Hayes, on the next play and Wilson throws the ball away when he can’t find anybody open. Did we mention the defense is blowing up the offense today.

    — Wilson comes back with a beauty as he hits Ezukanma downfield while rolling to his left, with the receiver doing his part with a diving catch.

    — Phillips with another good play against the run as he comes from the back side to meet Achane after he cuts back inside.

    — Two short completions from Tua to Waddle, including a nifty no-look pass over the middle while looking to the sideline.

    — The drive ends with a quick hitter to Achane from the 10 and he may or may not have gotten into the end zone (no tackling).

    — Ethan Robinson, who’s having himself a nice practice, meets Gordon in the hole.

    — Ewers takes off scrambling in the face of pressure, and we clearly can see he’s the slowest of the three Dolphins QBs.

    — Good protection on the next play, but Ewers waits too long to throw toward Hayden Rucci near the sideline and that allows Jack Jones to dive in front of the receiver for an incompletion. Not sure whether Jones touched the ball, but he shouldn’t have been that close regardless.

    — Practice ends with an incompletion when Wease can’t get both feet in bounds after catching a Ewers pass in the back of the end zone.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Obviously, I don’t take early depth charts very seriously. However, we might be seeing this in our nickel packages… in order to keep our best 3 pass-rushers on the field together.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

This was very different in ’23, when we actually had a running game to keep opposing Defenses from playing 2-deep Safeties all day, every day.

VERY happy our Phins decided to get BIGGER at the Guard positions this season, as recommended!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we used Jonnu as an extension to our running game, so that stat is whatever to me

I don’t care that much about the running game in general as I do the short yardage running, that’s where our O will make or break and why we can’t beat good teams

good teams get you in 3rd and 2 and they’re moving the chains or going on 4th, so they’re starting out 1st and 8, while we’re 1st and 12

here’s why I don’t care that much about running in general, 1st down we run for 5, 2nd down run for 3, if we can’t convert 3rd and 2 we’re screwed

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

and Tua has very little to do with it

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You can also mix a pass in there. It’s not all about short yardage. It’s about drawing the defense into the box because they can’t defend it playing umbrella coverages.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It starts with short yardage, if we can’t do that nothing else matters

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t see it that way. We’re a stretch run and medium and deep passing team. The Colts with Manning played the same way. The same as many other WC offenses. It’s about execution and accountability.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

its 2025, not 2005, all the good teams can pick up short yardage 1st downs, when it matters most

watch Philly, they try to get to 3 and 2 or less, then shove the pile

if you’re throwing it too often in short yardage your 1st % will likely be bottom 1/3 not good enough

Bills vs KC vs Ravens, very difficult to stop these Os late in games and why they’re the top 3 teams, they’re also excellent in short yardage pickups

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

1st & 8? do you forget how first downs work??

  79. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I disagree. Tua gives you absolutely no option to have your QB make a play with his size. You can do things with bigger guys. Nobody is worried about Tua running it in from short for a TD. Defenses are able to focus on other options. Kyler Murray is a small guy too, for instance, but he’s quick as shit. He can make a guy miss, but you really don’t want him making short yardage runs either. Bigger guys give you more options. Brady used to sneak the ball all the time. Are OLs so bad these days that nobody feels they can sneak it in other than Philadelphia? I don’t get it.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m only talking about our team and we have what we have with Tua, he can’t be running QB sneaks and tush pushes

of course bigger QBs give you more options, but we don’t have one of those and for our O to be successful we will need to get it done with all hands on deck, sans Tua on plays we run it in short yardage sutuations

  80. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – It’s not Tua’s size that’s the problem, it’s the fact that he’ll be a jigsaw puzzle with some of the pieces missing if he gets hit hard.

  81. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It could be the google AI messing up, but I just googled what the % of passes at or behind the line was in 22 & 23 and guess who led the league in those years?? Go on, guess. The guy with the “quickest release” in football.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So according to the AI response MF13, it WAS NOT very different in ’23. It was almost the exact percentage. 31.1% (again basing on the google response)

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – What are you saying, the reason the Frajeel has the highest completion % is because so many of his throws are within 10 yards or less from the LOS?

  83. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Boy the PhinPhanatic really posts some bullshit click bait articles. Just made up shit like Quinn Ewers has outplayed Zach Wilson and will be the backup this year.

NO nothing coming out of camp has even slightly indicated that is a possibility.

  84. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Having Phillips as an OLB is potentially going to wreak havoc on apposing offenses. You have him next to Chub or Chop, what does the offense do? Could be exciting. (if they can stay healthy)

  85. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Rock,

That’s what I suggested when Chop was drafted. He is best when he gets clean runs. Stacking him with another player can create favorable situations for Chop to get loose on loops and games.

  86. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I don’t think it’s because Tua is frajeel! It’s really the same for any smaller QB…and teams just don’t put their QBs at risk like that anymore. But, it does change the complexion of short yardage situations when you don’t have a QB who can do it on his own with his legs.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      no question about it

Allen with sheer power, Mahomes with craftiness, Jackson with speed and quickness, Brady got good push in front of him, Hurts power and butt push

everyone does it differently, Tua needs to find his signature move

  87. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Boy the PhinPhanatic really posts some bullshit click bait articles.

    ————

Yeah, Brian Miller and the gang must be getting desperate for clicks. I rarely look at their stuff anymore.

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – When we play winning teams, Tua signature move has been “The Fetal Position”

Rock, this may work for you:

Stream: FOX 32 Chicago’s website (in the video player above) and the FOX Local app

  90. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

All kidding and snarkiness aside, Tua’s signature move is probably his no-look shovel pass. He’s very deceptive and good at handling the ball and misdirection

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

He is among the best in the league at anticipation throws, knowing exactly where his receiver will be when the ball gets there. He throws before the WR even makes his break. (which leads to trouble sometimes when a player gets tangled up by the D or slips and falls)

  91. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

again, Miller with his click bait BS. It is laughable how silly that page has gotten!

“Dolphins’ sneaky Tua Tagovailoa replacement plan just got a massive boost”

    headline

In the article he sites his own earlier article about how they are secretly “quietly” tanking this season…

I won’t post the link because I don’t want to lower you guys’ IQ’s.

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – Not really, maybe with the exception of Hurts with the “Tush Push” “Brotherly Shove”

  93. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    @Marcel_LJ

Dolphins OL Germain Ifedi said he’d received some interest from teams this offseason but wanted to be selective about his next team Familiarity with Miami’s zone scheme and his relationship with some players/coaches helped him make his decision
