Pre Season Game 1 – Dolphins @ Bears

Not gonna lie, I’m legitimately excited to see some of our young guys play, and even some of the older guys too. I really didn’t think it would happen, as most of you know, I’m having a hard time being a fan of this team due to the current management, and the Head Coach. That being said, nothing could give me a jolt of enthusiasm more than to see some of our young players look like they can be NFL starters, potentially good ones! I expect there to be a certain amount of sloppiness, this is the first time many of the players we’ll see against Chicago getting their first televised game action and the big lights will be on, and that changes everything. It’s no longer just practice, and for some of these players, their performance in the 3 preseason games can be the difference between making the 53 and looking for a team to pick them up off of waivers.

We’re going to have a very young, unproven secondary, especially at the cornerback position. CB’s Storm Duck and Kendall Sheffield may be the boundary corners, while veteran Mike Hilton will be in the nickel. There are a few other CB’s who would love nothing more to not only win a roster spot but to steal a starting job. I believe that’s very possible here, it’s certainly written in pencil or chalk at this point and can easily be erased. Jack Jones who was with the Patriots and Raiders and now his third team going into his 4th year kind of needs to grab a starting spot and perform or he may never be considered for a starting spot anywhere. CB Ethan Bonner who always gets buzz in training camp needs to do more than that and make some plays with the lights on and get noticed. 2025 5th RD Pick CB Jason Marshall needs to make things happen to move up the depth chart and get a roster spot. It must feel like hell to be on a roster bubble, but sometimes stars are born when the pressure is on and the lights are on too.

The O-line right now is another are of concern and some positives. Already the depth will be tested with RT Austin Jackson OUT with a leg injury and his status for the regular season Game 1 is up in the air . OT Kion Smith has been here a while, and we have OL Liam Eichenberg who is the backup at every position on the O-line, as well as OL Larry Borom who is a backup at OG and OT. We also recently signed OT Germain Ifedi, so we have lots of bodies, but we need answers, one way or the other. Honestly, I can’t wait to see LT Patrick paul, although he may not play much against the Bears. Of course I want to see LG Jonah Savaiinaea and I want him to look like a beast. Not sure if james Daniels plays much either, but with him I just want to see that he’s healthy and moving well. C Aaron Brewer is also dealing with an injury, as is backup C Andrew Meyer. If it’s not Liam Eichenberg at C, your guess is as good as mine as to who else might play C, Daniel Brunskill, Addison West?

The front 7 is definitely going to be the strength of the defense, but that’s assuming our young players that we drafted get up to speed quickly. DT Zach Sieler got his well earned big payday, but next to him, big Benito Jones and 1st RD draft pick DT Kenneth Grant has to show quickly and be a force for us. The initial depth charts show us not working from the 3-4 base but I don’t think that’s necessarily a change in philosophy. I think we will try and put in some speed packages to get our best pass rushers on the field at the same time, but we will still operate from the base 3-4 which should feature RDE Zach Sieler, NT Benito Jones and LDE Kenneth Grant. At OLB depending upon the health of Jaelan Phillips and Bradely Chubb, those two probably start but I would expect to see an awful lot of 2nd year pass rusher Chop Robinson, and I mean a whole lotta Chop! The inside LB’s look as strong as I can remember with ILB’s Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson and Willie Gay and even KJ Britt. That’s a deep unit right there, and I haven’t even mentioned Channing Tindall. Back to OLB, Quinton Bell turned some heads again so maybe we see a little something from him and Cam Goode too. Mo Kamara might have a tough time making this roster.

At Safety, I think Minkah Fitzpatrick will be on the field the most, but who is with him again depends on health. Ashtyn Davis or Iffy Melifonwu will most likely be the other safety, and since it seems like Minkah will playing more of a centerfield role with us here in miami, Iffy Melifonwu is more of the SS type, but nothing is set in stone. We also drafted S Dante Trader and don’t forget about special teams ace Elijah Campbell who always impresses the coaches. I’m actually willing to give Minkah another chance, and I hope he surprises all of us by returning to his All Pro from back at his old position, not playing Strong Safety, and back with his old team. I’m sure the trade stung some, he’s a prideful fella, but having an All Pro season is the best message to send to Pittsburgh, as well as to become enamored by fans who weren’t necessarily sure if they liked the idea of him back in Aqua and Orange.

On offense, we have to stay healthy. I would expect RB De’Von Achane to see very little action, as well as QB Tua Tagovailoa. Besides, it’s really about the battle of the backups at both of those positions. At RB, it’s about 2nd year RB Jaylen Wright, veteran RB Alexander Mattison and 6th RD draft pick RB Ollie Gordon. At QB, there could be a dogfight for the backup spot with veteran QB Zach Wilson and rookie Quinn Ewers. Granted, Ewers faces an uphill battle because of who our starting QB is, Tua Tagovailoa and his tendency to get injured. Usually, you want a veteran back there, and last year’s hideous carousel of practice squad rejects was an embarrassment, but no more than relying on QB Skylar Thompson as the backup. Grier and McDaniel won’t get caught with their pants down this year so odds heavily favor QB Zach Wilson who has 33 NFL starts, and not the rookie 7th RD pick Quinn Ewers. Quinn Ewers though needs to show something for this team to carry him as the 3rd QB though, so he better up his game if he wants to be on the 53. The Dolphins could still elect to carry 3 QB’s if they like Ewers potential enough because if they put him on the PS, he’s as good as gone.

The WR spot will fun to see some good competition as well. Tyreek Hill won’t see much action if any, but I expect Jaylen Waddle to play some, and then someone needs to step up from the crowded WR room we have. We signed big WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine early on in Fre Agency after his impressive ’24 season in which he caught 32 passes for nearly 500 yards (497) for a nice 15.5 YPR as well as a heady 9 receiving TD’s. With TE Jonnu Smith gone, it makes sense to think that Westbrook-Ikhine could steal some of those catches, and that it would be nice to have a bigger bodied WR (6’2 211) on the field. Besides NWI, there’s always impressive slot WR Malik Washington who I’m looking forward to seeing some growth from. I think he can be a nice dependable receiver that can find the soft spot and get open when Tyreek and Waddle get the double coverage. He’s quick and shifty and he could get his share of targets. Then there’s good ole Erik Ezukanma who wows and disappears in equal measures. He better do more of the former, because if it’s the latter, he may finally ended his tenure here in Miami. The other Washington, Tahj Washington also needs to shine to make the roster. There’s also Dee Eskrdige who was a 2nd RD pick by Seattle back in 2021 who is fighting to make the roster. Hopefully we have some good competition there.

There’s also a battle for the Punter spot. Incumbent P Jake Bailey will have to be excellent to hold off the much stronger leg of Ryan Stonehouse. Stonehouse booms his punts but has lessplacement accuracy than Bailey. Still, I think the younger former Titans punter has the literal leg up on Bailey, averaging nearly 5 yards more per punt than Bailey. I think we all hope we aren’t punting very often but if we are, I think I’d rather take my chances with the booming leg of Stonehouse.

What are you excited to see? What players are you most anxious to see in action, and which battles are the one you look forward to most? I’m curious to hear your responses, I’m actually getting pumped to see what we got. Don’t mistake this as enthusiasm for our season, I’m nowhere near that yet, but I do want to see some young guys and some of our players returning from injury and how they look. this team has a lot of work to do to get me to feel positive about how our season will go, but maybe they surprise me a little how our young players perform and our botom of the roster looks. I can only hope!

I have to admit I’m not too concerned about FAs signed in August. Again, what’s the point of bringing in older vets? Don’t get it. Don’t like it. Don’t know what I was saying. Go Dolphins! 🐬

Minkah Fitzpatrick: “They’re asking me to do more than just one job. I think (Weaver’s) defense in the secondary is based off of versatility and that’s kind of the reason they brought me here.”

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh boy… and that’s exactly the reason Minkah wanted out of Miami in the first place, under Flores.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Exactly! He wanted to know what weight he should be at, “Am I a LB, S, or CB?” Let’s see how he handles it with Weaver

but Pittsburgh asked him to do a lot of things too

and really Flores was his Secondary coach coach in 2022

That doesn’t even make sense, man. Rooks are willing to do almost ANYTHING to make a roster… hence the BIG DEAL with Minkah and his mother talking their way out of Miami in the first place.

Seasoned vets KNOW where they fit, and THEY are the ones who will resist position change/multiple duties.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The secondary and the OL as ushe are the two areas that have to be better than expected to have a good season.

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not that any rankings at this juncture mean anything but our team is not getting any respect, and I completely agree. One was ranking NFL Offenses and we were #24, I think it it was “The Ringer”. ESPN has us overall #20. It will be interesting to see if this team can prove everyone wrong.

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, you take it more personally than I do.

Our core has to produce. If not it’s over.

  17. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Tim,

The offensive line had better play well. We have a lot invested in it: one first rounder, two second rounders, and two free agents who are making good money. I don’t know if we just don’t draft offensive lineman well, or we don’t develop them, or maybe it’s a combination of both. Jackson, hopefully we’ll get back to playing the way. He did with Hunt next to him now that Daniel’s is here.

  18. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

Lots of vets start to take on other roles when they age and start to lose their ability. A CB who’s asked to play more of a safety position as they age is pretty common in the NFL. Tackles who move to guard. DEs who slide inside. And, I believe coming in and stating they weren’t interested in doing different things is exactly what the rookie Fitz did, isn’t it?

Maybe, going into his 9th season, he’s learned it’s beneficial to his career at this point to do more things.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

not sure I buy into Minkah wanting to do different things

he bitched in Pitt, that they weren’t using him correctly, now all of a sudden he wants to play all over the lot

he did the same thing in Miami before he left, then went to Pitt and said he’d play anywhere

he needs to play where he played, when he was All Pro, and occasionally move around

  19. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Jason Marshal played really well in the nickel position

I’m kinda excited about him and I think he can make up for the loss of Kader Kahou

Now if only 🦆💨 and 🍆 were able to be top tier corners on the outside….

I like how we are built up front, maybe that helps these young guys in the secondary

    let’s go 🐬

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Some tidbits from yesterday’s mild almost walk through practice:

The Dolphins had a couple of prominent players back at practice, fullback Alec Ingold and outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips.

Linebacker Mohamed Kamara, who missed the trip to the Midwest while in the concussion protocol, was back at practice and like Ingold wearing a red jersey.

The list of missing players grew a bit from the past week, and again was led by WR Tyreek Hill (oblique). Also not spotted at practice or not working were RB De’Von Achane, who’s dealing with a calf issue, WR Tarik Black, OL Andrew Meyer, OL Addison West, T Bayron Matos, T Austin Jackson, LB Dequan Jackson, CB Kendall Sheffield, S Ashtyn Davis, S Dante Trader Jr. and CB Ethan Bonner.

Darren Waller again watched on the sideline

Each of the three quarterbacks threw a touchdown pass during the 7-on-7s, Tua Tagovailoa to wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, Zach Wilson to tight end Pharaoh Brown, and Quinn Ewers to running back Aaron Shampklin.

Wide receiver Dee Eskridge dropped a Tua pass in the back of the end zone, while Jason Marshall Jr. had a pass breakup against Brown and Cornell Armstrong had a PBU against Andrew Armstrong.

In the 11-on-11 session, Zeek Biggers got good penetration against Jonah Savaiinaea to meet Jaylen Wright in the backfield.

On the next snap, Tua threw a TD pass to Tanner Conner near the pylon.

Wilson threw a touchdown pass to Erik Ezukanma in the middle of the end zone, followed by Shampklin scoring on a short run.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – That’s the thing man, you want top tier corners on the outside and we’re at August 20th. If your GM hasn’t figured it by now, he’s not going to. I’m fine with seeing if any of the young guys can play. Seems like every year we have to deal with deficiencies because Grier didn’t address it properly. Last year he wasn’t concerned about the O-line. This year he said there are plenty of options in free agency. At some point, you just have to realize he’s just talking nonsense

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

      out his ass.

      ———-

There, I finished your last sentence.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think this is a figuring out issue

out team is relying on unproven young players there

that’s going to give the fans anxiety but it doesn’t mean it won’t work

      💨🦆 played well last year

this now an open question not a closed issue and some people are approaching it like they’ve already watched the 2025 season play out

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Weaver and Minkah comments on CB Jason Marshall:

“Bigger body corner, you look at him sometimes and think that he could be a linebacker, but he has the movement skills as a [defensive back],” defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said Tuesday. “I think Jason’s skill set not only allows him to play outside, but inside as well.”

“We weren’t sure about [his physicality] until we put him in the game and saw him make a [tackle for a loss] on a nickel pressure, and then I was like ‘OK it’s in there,’ now let’s see if he can grow,” Weaver said.

“Honestly, what stood out the most was that it was his first time doing it, and he played it at such a high level,” said Fitzpatrick. “I think nickel is probably one of the hardest spots to play on the field. You’re asked to do a lot. You have to see a lot. You have to make a lot of communication. You’ve got to tackle, you’ve got to cover. You could be in half one play, you could be blitzing the next play.

“There aren’t many positions on the field that do that.”

“For a young guy who never played it before to go in, I think he got two tackles for loss. He played great in coverage, made all the right communications. It was really cool to see him step up in that role,” Fitzpatrick said of watching Marshall from the sideline.

“It was also cool because in practice, he made a couple of mistakes and corrected it in the game and played lights out,” Fitzpatrick said. “Seeing a guy take the lessons that he learned in practice and apply it in the game and play at a high level is really impressive.”

  23. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

    Adam Schefter

Texans signed former Dolphins long snapper Blake Ferguson.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Good for Ferguson! Finally got his health in order. (it was rumored that diabeeeetus, as Wilford Brimley would say, was an issue.)

  24. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    about fucking time!

The Miami Dolphins announced today that they have activated tight end Darren Waller off the physically unable to perform list.**

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

thank God. I was getting worried that this thing was going to play out for about longer

In my opinion the risk we are taking at TE is the biggest risk we are taking (not what we are doing at CB)

  25. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Jason Marshall was not on my radar pre-draft

but the Dolphins may have seen something that said he would be the with nickel

I read that he was good in run support and physical

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

if that works out it’s a heck of a find

with Hilton there as a sort of safety valve

so we have to find some outside guys between Duck, Bonner, Jack Jones and Cam Smith

and yes….im still clinging to hope on Cam Smith

I never bailed on Austin Jackson and he was worth the wait. Sometimes. Draftees need time

      let’s go Cam Smith

  26. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I should not have left off Dantzler

seems unlikely to find a CB who was playing for the Memphis Showboats last season but I guess anything can happen

I’m hoping we sign Zy Alexander too

these guys are probably just camp bodies but Alexander on the practice squad would be big for me

  27. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

    Travis Wingfield

The emergence of Jason Marshall Jr. as the nickel last week is exactly why I love camp/the preseason. Did almost none of it in college, takes a crack at it and shows immediate bite.

Weave and Minkah both praised the job he did. Re-watching the tape, the physicality in press, the re-routing/collision guys in the 5-yard window, his speed around the edge and ability to flatten as a blitzer or run-fitter, looked to me like he did his job in terms of coverage rules…it all looked the part.

Something to track the rest of the month.

  28. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I expect absolutely nothing from this defensive backfield, so I’m waiting to be surprised.

This team has done zero to engender faith in me as a fan, so I feel just fine questioning every move they make. Prove me wrong.

  29. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jonah has a long way to go.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Yeah, I was not impressed watching him during the games. His vision seemed to be off. He was “looking for work” instead of blocking the guy who should have been blocked, for lack of a better way to explain it.

There were plays where he literally stood there and blocked no one. while out QB was under pressure.

He should get better with experience, but there WILL BE growing pains this season.

  30. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

In that video Tyler talks about the issue I brought up with Phillips. He called it penetrating more. I call it just attacking the line of scrimmage and not accepting the blows of the OL. Phillips is still getting blocked by a single guy too often for my taste, but he’s a rookie.

I’d still like to see Grant build up his body. All the tools are there. He just needs a couple years of professional life as a player, I hope.

I still like Biggers. He’s like a 2 year old learning how to walk without running into and bumping off everything, but you can see the potential once he learns how to play with better knee bend and stance. I’d like to see him play more like Tim Bowens but that’s a lot to ask.

I think all 3 guys have a shot at being long time contributors to the DL.

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Jonah is still playing like a tackle. I even noticed when I watched him play that he’s always looking to the outside too. Now, that’s appropriate a lot of the time but not always…and it’s hurt him because he pays more attention and gives help to the tackle more than he should or when he shouldn’t. Whoever that video guy is kind of addressed it, but he claimed Jonah had his eyes inside even when he didn’t. I liked the way he addressed the guys he played against too. That’s left out of the equation in almost all videos. It matters a lot. Even if you’re just evaluating technique because better competition shows flaws in your technique.

I talked about Jonah’s technique issues when we drafted him, and it’s why I thought he was over-drafted. I was hoping to see more correction by the second PS game. I kinda think the physical ability is there, but guard is just a different mindset than tackle. It requires different things.

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I expect him to struggle early, he needs to be ready week 9

  33. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Alec Ingold practiced today without the red no contact jersey. That’s good news!

  34. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Randy, I agree with everything you said.

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Today’s practice from Alain Poupart:

Not surprisingly, Waller didn’t do much beyond stretching in his first appearance

Tyreek Hill and De’Von Achane continues to miss practice, and they also were joined in missing the session by rookie first-round pick Kenneth Grant.

Austin Jackson was spotted on the stationary bike with a walking boot on his left leg.

Center Aaron Brewer wore the orange jersey as the practice player for Tuesday.

Veteran edge defender Matthew Judon took part in his first practice with the team

On the first play of 11-on-11s, Jack Jones got under a Tua deep pass for Jaylen Waddle near the right sideline and almost came up with an interception.

Judon did some good work in coverage on a play where Tua checked down to Ollie Gordon because he couldn’t find anybody open.

Ollie Gordon II dropped a handoff from Zach Wilson on a bad exchange, though he was able to recover the ball.

Elijah Campbell intercepted Wilson, but that came on a play where Derrick McLendon likely would have sacked him.

Cornell Armstrong had great coverage to break up a pass intended for Erik Ezukanma. He got up asking for a flag, but none came.

On his first snap, Quinn Ewers had a 40-yard completion to A.J. Henning down the left sideline with John Saunders Jr. in coverage.

Nick Westbrook-Ikhine dropped a swing pass from Tua that was a little bit in front of him but should have been caught.

Zach Sieler stuffed Jaylen Wright on a run up the middle.

Matt Dickerson got to Gordon on a run at the line of scrimmage.

Wilson had a nice completion over Campbell on a deep post to Dee Eskridge.

Judon got to Wilson on a play that might have been a sack but was allowed to continue. Wilson then completed a 20-yard pass to Tahj Washington near the left sideline.

Judon got around Ryan Hayes on the next snap and got close to Wilson again.

On the first play of the next 11-on-11 set, Tua hurried a throw to NWI near the sideline and the result was an incompletion. The next play wasn’t much better, with Tua overshooting a recever and the refs dropping a flag for an ineligible receiver downfield.

Jaylen Wright had a solid gain up the middle on a run.

Judon and Chop Robinson got to Wilson for a sack in a two-minute drill.

Robinson then tipped a swing pass on the next play.

Jaelan Phillips sacked Tua at the start of another 11-on-11.

Jordan Phillips stopped a Jaylen Wright run at the line.

The last snap of the series was an incompletion, continuing a rough day for the first-team offense.

Wilson’s first snap in the same session ended with a quick completion over the middle to Ezukanma.

Matthew Butler got to Wilson for a sack.

Elijah Campbell got a tackle for loss on a run by Gordon.

Jason Marshall Jr. had good coverage and came up with a PBU on a pass from Tua to Waddle in the end zone.

The defense came up with a pick in the end zone on a Tua pass intended for NWI, and it appeared (view partially obstructed) as though Cam Smith tipped the pass into the hands of Jack Jones Jr.

Ben Stille batted down a pass from Wilson.

Waller’s going to be stretching his paycheck until he quits on us

  37. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Sieler’s contract finally hit the books. Only about 33m of his 43m is fully guaranteed. The other 10m becomes guaranteed at the start of 2027 league year. His cap hit this year is only 7.8m and in 2026 only 11.2m. Then it goes up to 20.6m in 2027, 23.4m in 2028 and 22.7 in 2029. There turned out to be one void year in 2030 with only a 2.8 cap hit on an option bonus he gets next year.

All in all a good contract for both sides with a 2027 out clause.

I think we just may have the most ferocious pass-rush in the NFL right now. Now IF we can stay healthy, we could be very dangerous this season.

I’m still not sold on our CB room… would love to add a proven vet. I DO believe our Safety room has been solidified by the addition of Minkah, so I’m good there.

The potential is there to have a top-5 Defense this season under Anthony Weaver. Should that come to fruition, it will take a lot of pressure off our Offense… which I firmly believe will be a top-10 (or much better!) Offense.

Health is our key and the sky is our limit.

    I’m drinkin’ the Kool-Aid again!!!

Agreed with Randy, Big Jonah is playing with a Tackle’s mentality and technique. Once he gets that cleaned up (obviously the sooner the better), he’s a keeper, IMO.

Leverage, leverage, leverage!!! And he’s got to clean his feet up… feet pointed outside like a duck.

Two things: 1) They have 2 guys coming off serious injuries that affect burst/explosion: JP started 9 of the last 35 games off ACL & achilles injuries. 2) As a deep position, you have to think they’re trading a depth piece for a CB: Kei’Trel Clark, Adoree Jackson, Emmanuel Forbes

    Stock Up

CB Jason Marshall – The rookie from Florida has emerged in the last week or so. Marshall has gotten more role responsibility and he responded well in the last preseason game and in the last training camp practice, when he broke up an end zone pass for Jaylen Waddle.

Edge Matthew Judon – Judon shined in his first practice in aqua and orange. Judon used power and speed and looked like a good complement to Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and Chop Robinson. Afterwards, Judon basically said he’s just here to do his part.

    Stock Down

QB Tua Tagovailoa – It was an uncharacteristic day for Tua, who just wasn’t very accurate. Of course, Tyreek Hill, De’Von Achane and Darren Waller were all watching. No cause for concern.

RB Ollie Gordon II – Gordon had a fumbled exchange with quarterback Zach Wilson. Gordon also had a dropped pass. Slow the roll a bit on Gordon surpassing Jaylen Wright? Look, they’re all going to play.

given the reports about Marshal and the possibility of him being our starting nickel back (not really a starter I guess)

how any starters to you think we are getting out of this rookie class?

    I have:
    Grant

    Saviinaea

maybe Phillips – if not significant playing time

    Marshal

and maybe Ollie Gordon if Achane is out early (which some people are reporting)

If those guys are getting significant snaps in week 1 – that’s a pretty good draft

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the rookie class

nothing like I’ve heard in the past when rookies are disappointing early

but maybe it’s just early and some one doesn’t perform when the season begins – but right now it doesn’t feel like that

key to our run game early in the season is going to be getting Jackson and Achane back to start the season

Wright seems to be following the Ballage path, you can’t teach good vision

Ollie seems to be a find, but really isn’t an outside zone back, which is fine for our backup, not for our starter, if Achane doesn’t play week 1, new backs seem pretty good

  57. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

preseason/joint practices have shown our CBs mostly aren’t ready, maybe Bonner comes back soon or Jones figures out press man

TE I really don’t have a problem with, think Conner can hold down the fort until Waller is ready, then there’s Hill yikes, but Brown may take over Hill’s snaps sooner than later

MM I have little hope for, he’s going to drag us down, he’s the main reason we can’t beat good teams, he just hasn’t been able to get the troops ready and adjust

Hill is starting to be a concern, rest of the group seems to be ready to hit the ground running

    Front 7 fantastic and deep

Safety has enough to play alongside Minkah and make the group above avg

no problem with Tua, until the blocking starts to be a problem

    MM’s presser this morning:

Rookie first-round pick Kenneth Grant is day-to-day

With De’Von Achane dealing with a calf injury, it provides opportunities for the other running backs on the roster. McDaniel also points out that Achane has “complete ownership of the playbook,” which puts the onus on the other players to help in all facets of the position.

CB Kendall Sheffield won’t practice Thursday as he continues to deal with a soft-tissue injury. McDaniel talks about Sheffield being out “several days.”

Tight end Darren Waller is expected to do more at practice Thursday, and McDaniel says he “can’t wait” for Waller to show him his level of readiness for the start of the regular season. “I’m looking forward to him progressing in our offense steadily and pretty quickly.”

“Because he’s a dawg” is how McDaniel answers the question of, Why Judon?

The addition of Judon will create some tougher decisions at the edge defender position, but McDaniel likes the added competition. McDaniel called the practice Wednesday, Judon’s first with the team, may have been the best all camp for the position.

Tyreek Hill continues to miss practice, but McDaniel says the wide receiver has continued to remain present and engaged. Says the offense can benefit from having to work without the energy that Hill always brings.

For the preseason finale, McDaniel says his plan as of now is for the starters to play. How much action they will get will depend on what practice Thursday looks like. That obviously will not include injured players.

Asked who his Grim Reaper (the guy who tells players to bring their playbook to the GM because they’re getting cut) is, McDaniel says he spreads the job because otherwise it would make for difficult intererpersonal relationships throughout the year for that one person. McDaniel says he doesn’t like cutdown day and adds this year might be the worst because of all the close battles for final roster spots.

    Stock Up

LT Patrick Paul ― Patrick continues to excel and to do so against notable pass rushers. On this day, he held his own against the Jaguars‘ Josh Hines-Allen, even throwing him down to the ground in one 1-on-1 drill.

S Minkah Fitzpatrick Minkah had yet another training camp interception. He has stood out since returning and fills a big void in the wake of Jevon Holland’s departure. The best part? Fitzpatrick isn’t just a talented player. He’s a player youngsters can model.

    Stock Down

G Jonah Savaiinaea ― We don’t mean to pile onto a rookie guard. But he had his hands full at times on Thursday. He will continue to work hard and surely will continue to improve. Just don’t expect dominance and consistency immediately.

RB Jaylen Wright ― We are hoping Wright’s apparent lower-body injury is not too serious. But he did leave the field with trainers. The Dolphins‘ running back situation is concerning at the moment, with Alexander Mattison already down for the season.

Looks like we could have used that 3rd round pick we threw away to move up to take a guy who would probably still been there. (I don’t care that Grief got gamed by New England into panicking, just more proof of his incompetence)

But then again, it would have been Grief picking that 3rd round guy so he probably would have whiffed on that pick too.

Thank you for keeping track of the season predictions this year! I wait until the last preseason game is over, so as to have a better sense of who our starters will be entering game 1 of the regular season.

I’ll add my name to the list in the very near future… didn’t want ya to think I’m not participating this year. Again, thank you!

  71. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The biggest immediate takeaway for the Dolphins unfortunately was the concern over three players who were injured during practice, a list highlighted by linebacker Jordyn Brooks. The other two were running back Jaylen Wright and rookie wide receiver A.J. Henning.

Brooks not only is a starter on a defense that will have to deliver for the Dolphins to return to the playoffs, but also one of its clear leaders. He was injured late in practice during an 11-on-11 session on the near field when he was part of a group putting pressure on quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Brooks watched the end of practice standing behind the line of scrimmage.

Wright and Henning both left the practice field to head inside accompanied by a trainer, and Henning specifically left on crutches in the direction of the on-site Baptist Health Medical Center.

  72. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  74. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    The rest from ALain Poupart:

    — Quinn Ewers did not take any reps during team periods, which should put to rest (it should have been done already) the notion he could push Zach Wilson for the backup job behind Tua Tagovailoa.

    — By far the highlight of the one-on-one battles was watching Dolphins second-year tackle Patrick Paul go up against Josh Hines-Allen, one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. We spotted three reps, with Paul putting Hines-Allen on the ground on the first, Hines-Allen getting by him on the second, and the third one possibly a stalemate or a holding penalty on Paul.

    — Tempers got hot a couple of times, though we’d use the term “flare-ups” instead of fights or brawls. They both happened on the far side of the field (from the fans and media perspective) and it appeared Jack Jones Jr. was involved in both of them.

    — Among the players who appeared to stand out, we’d probably start with OLB Quinton Bell and WR Dee Eskridge.

    — The special teams period generally are pretty uneventful, but we have to note linebacker Dequan Jackson blocking a Jacksonville punt.

    — Zach Wilson had a nice touchdown pass in the red zone drill to rookie Theo Wease Jr., who made quite a few plays in camp with Ewers.

    — There weren’t many highlights on running plays for the Dolphins, but before he left Wright got a nice hole up the middle for a 5-yard touchdown.

    — Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick got an easy interception against Trevor Lawrence, which appeared to come as the result of a miscommunication between the quarterback and his intended receiver.

    — Jones may or may not have come down with another interception, and the only question is that Zach Sieler probably would have had a sack before the quarterback threw the ball (the play was allowed to continue in a practice setting).

    — Wilson had a rough two-play sequence with another failed rollout when he couldn’t get the ball to Tanner Conner, followed by a collision in the backfield when he tried to hand off to Aaron Shampklin. On the latter, it’s difficult to detect who was at fault.

    — Wilson later was sacked by a Jacksonville edge defender, none other than former Dolphins starter Emmanuel Ogbah.

    — Rookie cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. continues his fine work, highlighted by a pass breakup on a long attempt from Lawrence to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.

    — Wilson had a long completion to rookie Andrew Armstrong, but that was all Armstrong as he came back to catch a badly underthrown ball against two Jaguars defenders.

    — Tua attempted to connect with Nick Westbrook-Ikhine a couple of times, but their timing/connection was off, not the first time we’ve seen this in training camp.

    — The Dolphins twice attempted a no-look flip on an end-around to Eskridge and it flopped both times because of heavy penetration by Jacksonville defenders. There even was a fumble on the second.

    — The Dolphins had their issues blocking Josh Hines-Allen in team periods.

    — Ollie Gordon had some solid plays on offense, but he had a negative play on defense when he let a kickoff roll between his legs.

    — Tight end Pharaoh Brown fumbled after catching a short pass, though he was able to recover the loose ball.

    — Tua hooked up with Jaylen Waddle on their traditional quick slant and Tua had his highlight throw of the day — maybe of camp — when he threw a dart to Eskridge over the middle that got to him the second he turned his head to look at the ball.

    — That said, the first-team offense struggled in that final period because the Eskridge completion was accompanied by a check-down to Alec Ingold and five incompletions.

    — On Jacksonville’s final drive, Zach Sieler batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage and Bradley Chubb did the same a couple of plays later, though the Jaguars already had been flagged for an illegal shift.

This is a piece the Dolphins have lacked, the physical yin to the speed-and-finesse yang. They couldn’t run the ball last year. They ranked 28th in rushing offense.

It was even worse on short-yardage plays. On third and fourth down with less than 2 yards to go, the Dolphins ranked last in the league with a 55 percent success rate. They were stuffed for no gain on 46 percent of those runs, the worst rate for any team since 2019.

The running backs were at fault in failing to break tackles at the second-worst rate in the league, according to Warren Sharp analytics.

Their interior line was equally suspect. Robert Jones ranked 91st among guards, according to Pro Football Focus. Liam Eichenberg was worse at 104th. A reminder: Only 64 guards play at any time in the league.

So, this offseason the Dolphins changed their short-yardage game. They got two big guards in free-agent James Daniels (6-4, 320) and rookie Jonah Savaiinaea (6-5, 326).
