Preseason Game 3 – Jaguars @ Dolphins

The Dolphins finally host a Preseason football game, and mercifully we won’t have to listen to another awful broadcast in which it seems as if our team isn’t even involved in the game. This time, the commentary will be all about our Dolphins, for better or for worse. Look, there are some things to like about our team, but this is the final Preseason game and most likely this game won’t feature very many starters or potentially even 2nd string players, this is mostly a battle for players to make the 53 man roster and avoid being cut.

The Dolphins lost a RB early on in Alexander Mattison. That will give 2nd year RB Jaylen Wright a chance to step up and show he was worth trading a 2025 3rd RD pick to take him last year. Wright saw very little action last season with a paltry 68 carries for 249 yards (3.7 YPC). #1 on the RB depth chart is De’Von Achane who is banged up at the moment but likely to play Week 1 against the Colts, or at least HC Mike McDaniel believes he will be able to play. Either way, Wright should be the #2 back, with rookie Ollie Gordon as the #3 RB. We may see a decent amount of Wright and Gordon, as well as newcomers Mike Boone and Aaron Shampklin. What looked like a strength with Mattison running hard now looks like it could end up being a liability if Wright doesn’t get it into gear. These guys need to be ready, know their blocking responsibilities and be ready to play a lot of football if Achane either can’t go in initially or his injury flares up during the game.

As far as QB, with the good play of rookie QB Quinn Ewers, 7th RD pick (#231) in 2025, you’d have to think we’re going to carry 3 QB’s. Last year’s fiasco when Tua went down won’t be duplicated this year if Tua gets hurt, and realistically, it’s not IF, it’s WHEN. They simply can’t be embarrassed and caught with their pants down like they did last season bringing in multiple practice squad QB’s from other teams and starting them a week later. That’s a big roster spot, having the necessity to carry 3 QB’s. You have to think we’ll carry backup veteran Zach Wilson, and also keep the rookie who shows promise (Quinn Ewers), so there you have it, 3 QB’s. If we dare to put Quinn Ewers on the PS, he’d surely be gone quickly.

The defensive front 7, potentially the strength of this team just got a an early Christmas present. Veteran pass rusher Matt Judon joins an already formidable group of pass rushers in LB’s Jaelan Phillips, Chop Robinson, and Bradley Chubb. Judon signing will allow us 1 less young player, so one of Quinton Bell, Cameron Goode, Grayson Murphy, Derrick McClendon or Mo Kamara will make the roster, while the others hope to get put on the PS. I also so potentially a strength because although we may like what we’ve seen from LDE Kenneth Grant, and even further down the depth chart in Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers and RDE Matt Dickerson, we haven’t sen any of these guys in real NFL action yet and they are unknowns. Remember last season, we had a future Hall of Famer in Calais Campbell, a 37 year old dynamo. He was great for us last season, and we don’t know if Grant or even the combination of Grant and Biggers will be equal to what we had in Campbell, and that’s a pretty fair question. Plus, you have to truly consider the health of this group. Can Jaelan Phillips stay healthy, Bradley Chubb? Like Tua, these guys are difficult to rely on or expect an entire season put of.

The inside LB crew is stout, very happy with what we have, but you have to figure we carry only 4 here. Jordyn Brooks and Willie Gay will be the starters and Tyrell Dodson and KJ Britt the backups. I really like what we have, but we won’t have much depth there, especially carrying 3 QB’s. OLB Matt Judon may play a large role here, especially if there’s an injury to one of our starters. It’s also possible he earns more playing time and either Jaelan Phillips or Bradley Chubb become more situational pass rushers to hopefully keep them healthy, we’ll have to see how this works out.

Then we go to Safety where a lot of you are excited about the return of the great Minkah Fitzpatrick. I don’t share your enthusiasm, and to be honest, I don’t think Minkah Fitzpatrick does either. I’m sure he was stung by the trade, big time. That could potentially give him and edge to show Pittsburgh that they made a big mistake, or he could sulk and complain that he doesn’t like being used in various different roles like he did the first time he was here.It seems as if Iffy Melifonwu will join Fitzpatrick as the Strong Safety. Safety is another position where a nice young player will be cut, because we have a glut of young players with potential here in Patrick McMorris, Dante Trader Jr., who will be competing with veteran Ashtyn Davis as well as our own Elijah Campbell.

Then we go to CB, and this game will probably tell us a little bit more about what we will look like back there. Storm Duck and Kendall Sheffield will likely be our outside starting CB’s. Veteran Mike Hilton will be the nickel corner. It’s still possible there could be a change, because veteran Jack Jones might just steal a spot here. Ethan Bonner could also potentially end up starting, but he’s banged up now so we don’t know when he will be available. There’s also rookie NB Jason Marshall and the ever present Cam Smith, who I believe will have exhausted his opportunities and may finally get the axe. You can only be so patient, and Cam Smith has yet to thrust himself into a position where he’s got to be on the roster.

The WR group could prove to be an interesting situation. We know the top 3, Hill, Waddle and Washington (Malik). The depth here is uncertain. It seems like Dee ESkridge could make it, and you’d have to think Nick Westbrook-Ikhine should be safe, but is it possible WR Erik Ezukanma gets the nod over Ikhine who hasn’t really shown a lot since he’s been here? I know 3rd string Qb Quinn Ewers loves him some Theo Wease, but he’s a longshot. There’s also Tahj Washington, so there will be at least a couple of surprises. Not sure if we carry 5 or 6 Wr’s and again, carrying that 3rd QB hurts here.

Special teams will be the same K and P as last season, the decision has been made to keep P Jake bailey over Ryan Stonehouse, so that’s that. Jason Sanders had a great season and happy to have him back. WR Malik Washington will serve as the primary KR/PR, likely backed up by WR Dee Eskridge, if he makes the cut. Tyreek Hill will be used in certain situations as well.

We’ll see how some of these battles shake out tomorrow against the Jags at Hard Rock tomorrow. Injuries of course will make some decisions for Grier and MM, they always do unfortunately. I look forward at a minimum to hearing the home broadcast so we can actually hear about OUR team and not about the Bears or the Lions, Oh my!

yeah, you can’t run like that in the NFL every time you touch the ball. The players are too big and fast. Sure, put your head down when you need to, but he needs to learn how to avoid unnecessary contact if he wants to stay healthy.

    Reply

I like his attitude though. “I’m going to get hit anyway, I might as well initiate the contact on my conditions”

He is also surprisingly nimble for his size as his 1,732 yards and 21 touchdowns showed to seasons ago.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Don’t get me wrong, I do too, but he’s got to be smart. Step out of bounds instead of initiating or taking a hit he doesn’t need to.

Mike, Write was injured at the end of practice yesterday. He very well may not even play tomorrow.

Tyrell Dotson is the starter and Willie Gay is the backup. Though now with Jordyn Brooks injured. Gay may start in his place.

I was a huge Walter Peyton fan and loved the way he finished punishing DB’s. I like that about Gordon as well.

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Arch Manning said hold the phone on staying in college another year after this one. I think it all depends on how this season goes.

After all, he’s making serious money right now anyway. He has the highest NIL deal in college football. Arch is going to make 6.8m this year on his NIL deal.

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

No one is going to trade for WR McLaurin. Reports are he is not going to play for anyone without an extension and he wants around 27m per year or more. He wants close to a DK Metcalf contract.

  8. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    BB Mike,

I loved watching Walter Payton play as well. The difference is the linebackers in today’s game are as big as the offensive lineman were back during his day. Today’s offensive lines are probably 50 pounds heavier or more.

So no news is bad news on Wright? Usually a team will announce the same day if they will be alright.

True. Sucks that one major thing that had to get better, the run game, gets fucked by injuries before the season even starts.

A good and effective OL can make average RBs look good. You don’t need special backs to make a running game work. It’s nice…and a great back helps OLs too…but the OL makes it work regardless. I’m not hearing great reports on our OL so far, so I’m not sure where this is going yet. All I’ve seen is PS1.

Fun part of the job! I had the Sheriff’s office call me needing me to give them location history on someone we have a GPS on because he was a suspect in a burglary that just happened. I printed a 3 hour location report and emailed it to the deputy and to dispatch. He was at that burglary location for an hour.

I had the deputy on his cell phone and gave him the guy’s current location. I then spent the next 40 min giving the deputies location updates as they chased him through very rural neighborhoods and acres of woods. I was pinging his location every 10 seconds and sending a beeping alarm. Once they got close enough to hear the beeping, it was only a matter of minutes before they got him.

Sorry I’m not technical but our GPS icon shows up on a google satellite map when we go into pursuit mode.

I swear, the way he was zig zagging through the woods and homes, you could have played Benny Hill music to it. LOL

Too bad I don’t have an icon to show the deputies movements, that would have made it very entertaining. lol

Now BBM has to deal with the idiot and go to the jail to take off his GPS as he gets booked in.

Jason Marshall coming along just in time

sure he’s going to make his rookie mistakes at times, its how he handle the same situation the next time, that will tell us if he’s a keeper

Isaiah Johnson getting some work at safety, hope that means he’s going to make it. His size and speed are a good combination for a DB

Jack Jones learning how to be physical at the LOS

Duck seems to be the top dog right now, think that changes before the close of September

    Need Bonner back soon

Not sure why we’ve heard very little from Hilton, did they bubble wrap him too?

  39. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

question asked (some podcast) was how can Tua improve in 2025

by knowing the coverage and where he’s going with the ball presnap

Think Peyton Manning initially, but also what changed with Brees after leaving the Chargers

It’s time for Tua to do this full time, if he does it changes everything

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      100%

      it will lower his turnovers

as accurate as he is, if he does a better job of reading coverages before the snap, he will eat defenses alive

KSU vs ISU looks like a bad preseason game, hard to watch

  41. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

When I was told I had to work with sex offenders who were being released to the community, they kept telling me they had these leg bands/GPS but the technology could only show me where they were 30 minutes ago.

I kept asking everybody what good it does me to know where they were 30 minutes after they did something horrible? Latent tracking was better than nothing but almost worthless. Eventually a DOC guy I worked with told me it was more to placate community concerns than anything but they were told to promote our ability to know where these guys were. Right!

  42. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m enjoying the ISU/KS game. It’s been a messy, kinda sloppy game in the rain in Dublin, Ireland between 2 good defenses. What’s better?

  43. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

I think the one thing you want with a young, inexperienced defensive backfield is a veteran S who can communicate and get guys where they need to be. I like MF as a guy you’d sign for that role if he’s onboard. We’ll see how it works out. I’m not as concerned about him making plays but getting other guys where they need to be so our defense excels.

Your dislike of him is understood and appreciated, as I’m not a big fan of some things he’s done. But, I was a fan of his play in years past. I’m not sure we know what he’s got left but even if he’s lost a step he’s probably our best DB.

  44. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I swear, if ANY of our starting O-Linemen go down (and one or two WILL), we’re finished for the season. The depth behind them is absolutely embarrassing.

We had better be looking for better backup O-Linemen when the cuts to final-53s happen on Tuesday.

I think we’ll be bringing Jeff Wilson back — if he’s willing — to bring more depth and health to our RB room.

Still want to bring a vet CB into the fold; we’ve got the cap space to do it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s pretty much the way it is for most teams. Very few teams have superior depth. Don’t focus on losing players it will drive you crazy.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

starting OL going down will depend on how long, how many are out at the same time, which ones and against which teams

PP out for any length of time would be devastating, Jonah or Daniels out can be replaced by Braeden Daniels, Brewer out a few weeks we’ll feel it, but Brunskill or maybe Meyer can at least hold down the fort, Jackson out any length of time unless Kion is back to form would hurt almost as much as PP out

we were still in it last year week 18, after Tua missed several games, if he plays all 17 we’ll be right there week 18

  45. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As I stated several weeks ago, even with a ferocious pass-rush, opposing Offenses will kill us if they hit us quick and early to their WRs with our CB room. I see Anthony Weaver understands as much, so he’s working on my guy Jack Jones to be much more physical at the LOS when warranted.

NOBODY plays 100% man-to-man, and NOBODY plays 100% zone. So that being stated, perhaps we want/need somebody who can be physical at the LOS for our CB room.

I think we want Cam Smith to be that guy for us. We’ll see how it goes this evening for him…

  46. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

I DO want to say to you that I’m VERY impressed with our depth at WR, EDGE, and D-Line. Not all is bad for us!

  47. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

If we’re going to play some form of umbrella defense then you always want physical guys because you need tackling….and it’s usually team tackling. You have multiple guys converging in that design and you want them all getting in on it

No offense runs just man or zone schemes but we still differentiate. Personally, I like guys who can do both. 🤙

  48. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim/M13,

The question with that sort of defensive strategy is scoring defense. Can you stop them when it matters because you’re gonna give up yardage? That’s the design of your defense. Teams will likely get inside the 20. Classic bend but don’t break. Can you stop them? I like watching to see if they can pull this kinda stuff off.

It also doesn’t hurt that it can help hide some deficiencies in your talent pool. It’s all good.

  49. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Randy, Yeah the technology of these GPS units have really progressed. I can ping a guys location immediately though, depending on the signal, it’s accurate to about 15 to 30 feet of where they are. If they are in a very rural area with no cell towers they can off as much as 60 feet.

Even our portable breathe monitors have advanced and use facial recognition technology.

Also, because of the type of TE he is, it would really help in making a decision on whether to keep 5 or 6 WR’s.
