Preseason Game 3 – Jaguars @ Dolphins

The Dolphins finally host a Preseason football game, and mercifully we won’t have to listen to another awful broadcast in which it seems as if our team isn’t even involved in the game. This time, the commentary will be all about our Dolphins, for better or for worse. Look, there are some things to like about our team, but this is the final Preseason game and most likely this game won’t feature very many starters or potentially even 2nd string players, this is mostly a battle for players to make the 53 man roster and avoid being cut.

The Dolphins lost a RB early on in Alexander Mattison. That will give 2nd year RB Jaylen Wright a chance to step up and show he was worth trading a 2025 3rd RD pick to take him last year. Wright saw very little action last season with a paltry 68 carries for 249 yards (3.7 YPC). #1 on the RB depth chart is De’Von Achane who is banged up at the moment but likely to play Week 1 against the Colts, or at least HC Mike McDaniel believes he will be able to play. Either way, Wright should be the #2 back, with rookie Ollie Gordon as the #3 RB. We may see a decent amount of Wright and Gordon, as well as newcomers Mike Boone and Aaron Shampklin. What looked like a strength with Mattison running hard now looks like it could end up being a liability if Wright doesn’t get it into gear. These guys need to be ready, know their blocking responsibilities and be ready to play a lot of football if Achane either can’t go in initially or his injury flares up during the game.

As far as QB, with the good play of rookie QB Quinn Ewers, 7th RD pick (#231) in 2025, you’d have to think we’re going to carry 3 QB’s. Last year’s fiasco when Tua went down won’t be duplicated this year if Tua gets hurt, and realistically, it’s not IF, it’s WHEN. They simply can’t be embarrassed and caught with their pants down like they did last season bringing in multiple practice squad QB’s from other teams and starting them a week later. That’s a big roster spot, having the necessity to carry 3 QB’s. You have to think we’ll carry backup veteran Zach Wilson, and also keep the rookie who shows promise (Quinn Ewers), so there you have it, 3 QB’s. If we dare to put Quinn Ewers on the PS, he’d surely be gone quickly.

The defensive front 7, potentially the strength of this team just got a an early Christmas present. Veteran pass rusher Matt Judon joins an already formidable group of pass rushers in LB’s Jaelan Phillips, Chop Robinson, and Bradley Chubb. Judon signing will allow us 1 less young player, so one of Quinton Bell, Cameron Goode, Grayson Murphy, Derrick McClendon or Mo Kamara will make the roster, while the others hope to get put on the PS. I also so potentially a strength because although we may like what we’ve seen from LDE Kenneth Grant, and even further down the depth chart in Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers and RDE Matt Dickerson, we haven’t sen any of these guys in real NFL action yet and they are unknowns. Remember last season, we had a future Hall of Famer in Calais Campbell, a 37 year old dynamo. He was great for us last season, and we don’t know if Grant or even the combination of Grant and Biggers will be equal to what we had in Campbell, and that’s a pretty fair question. Plus, you have to truly consider the health of this group. Can Jaelan Phillips stay healthy, Bradley Chubb? Like Tua, these guys are difficult to rely on or expect an entire season put of.

The inside LB crew is stout, very happy with what we have, but you have to figure we carry only 4 here. Jordyn Brooks and Willie Gay will be the starters and Tyrell Dodson and KJ Britt the backups. I really like what we have, but we won’t have much depth there, especially carrying 3 QB’s. OLB Matt Judon may play a large role here, especially if there’s an injury to one of our starters. It’s also possible he earns more playing time and either Jaelan Phillips or Bradley Chubb become more situational pass rushers to hopefully keep them healthy, we’ll have to see how this works out.

Then we go to Safety where a lot of you are excited about the return of the great Minkah Fitzpatrick. I don’t share your enthusiasm, and to be honest, I don’t think Minkah Fitzpatrick does either. I’m sure he was stung by the trade, big time. That could potentially give him and edge to show Pittsburgh that they made a big mistake, or he could sulk and complain that he doesn’t like being used in various different roles like he did the first time he was here.It seems as if Iffy Melifonwu will join Fitzpatrick as the Strong Safety. Safety is another position where a nice young player will be cut, because we have a glut of young players with potential here in Patrick McMorris, Dante Trader Jr., who will be competing with veteran Ashtyn Davis as well as our own Elijah Campbell.

Then we go to CB, and this game will probably tell us a little bit more about what we will look like back there. Storm Duck and Kendall Sheffield will likely be our outside starting CB’s. Veteran Mike Hilton will be the nickel corner. It’s still possible there could be a change, because veteran Jack Jones might just steal a spot here. Ethan Bonner could also potentially end up starting, but he’s banged up now so we don’t know when he will be available. There’s also rookie NB Jason Marshall and the ever present Cam Smith, who I believe will have exhausted his opportunities and may finally get the axe. You can only be so patient, and Cam Smith has yet to thrust himself into a position where he’s got to be on the roster.

The WR group could prove to be an interesting situation. We know the top 3, Hill, Waddle and Washington (Malik). The depth here is uncertain. It seems like Dee ESkridge could make it, and you’d have to think Nick Westbrook-Ikhine should be safe, but is it possible WR Erik Ezukanma gets the nod over Ikhine who hasn’t really shown a lot since he’s been here? I know 3rd string Qb Quinn Ewers loves him some Theo Wease, but he’s a longshot. There’s also Tahj Washington, so there will be at least a couple of surprises. Not sure if we carry 5 or 6 Wr’s and again, carrying that 3rd QB hurts here.

Special teams will be the same K and P as last season, the decision has been made to keep P Jake bailey over Ryan Stonehouse, so that’s that. Jason Sanders had a great season and happy to have him back. WR Malik Washington will serve as the primary KR/PR, likely backed up by WR Dee Eskridge, if he makes the cut. Tyreek Hill will be used in certain situations as well.

We’ll see how some of these battles shake out tomorrow against the Jags at Hard Rock tomorrow. Injuries of course will make some decisions for Grier and MM, they always do unfortunately. I look forward at a minimum to hearing the home broadcast so we can actually hear about OUR team and not about the Bears or the Lions, Oh my!

Our supposed “starter” at Tight End, but he has never even practiced with the team?? First it was we don’t want to throw him in during joint practices, now off season is over and the guy still has not practiced one snap with the team!?

WTF is going on there!? They are lying about something! That’s for sure.

Isn’t Tanner Conner also injured? Or was it just a ding up?

    We signed former Giants TE.

Greg Dulcich is coming off of a strong preseason performance with the Giants in which he caught 7 passes for 53 yards and 3 touchdowns. While his total yardage wasn’t impressive, Dulcich showed a good rapport with the Giants’ quarterbacks and was targeted in high-leverage situations.

  18. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

You want my honest opinion? I think we’re still thin on the O-Line with a lack of quality backups, well knowing we’re going to lose a starter or 3. That, and I think we’re mighty thin at TE. Still wish we’d sign another RB, if even to the PS.

Aside from that, I think we have a decent roster… yes, I think I’m much more confident in our DB room.

I’m not ‘doom and gloom’, I just wanted to see us get better on our roster: I think we did! Somebody has to hold feet to fire!

    I’m now optimistic… much more than I was a month ago! 🙂

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  20. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

This defensive backfield needs to show up right away. If they start out getting torched, it’ll get ugly as teams take advantage of it. Gotta have a fast start and hope the rush helps. I’m not doom and gloom at all, but they gotta show they can play before I get too carried away.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I feel exactly the same way, man. If our DBs get torched early, it’s over. I do like our DB room now better than I had a month ago… we’ll see what happens.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I also like hearing Anthony Weaver talking about getting CBs like Jack Jones to play more physical at the LOS. If our pass-rush arrives on time, there will be a lot of quick hits to WRs.

The addition of Juju Brents adds more physicality to our CBs in terms of jamming at the LOS.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

it would be nice, if we get off to a fast start, that includes the CBs not getting too torched early, but the sky isn’t going to fall, if we don’t

we’ve gotten off to slow starts before, last year and 2019, so we can do it again and still make the playoffs

the problem children besides Hill have been sent packing, so the locker room isn’t fragile

Hill plays hard, not worried about him should we start slow, if he does cause problems he can be trade deadlined

  21. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Randy,

By the way, I’m VERY happy that your daughter’s school wasn’t the one targeted today, Brother. That’s WAY too close for comfort and I can’t even imagine what you must have felt before finally knowing she was safe.

It’s a scary world today for our youth, so very, very sadly. 😦

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

Yeah, it was stressful, but her school hasn’t even opened yet. I thought it was this week but it’s next. She knows I worry about her, but I try not to make a big deal of it. She’s still gotta go to work everyday. I worked in serious mental health situations so I get that you don’t always wanna talk about how scary your job can be. I just gotta eat it as a dad and smile.

    Teachers are soooo underpaid!

  23. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

  24. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Curtis from AcePerHead did a stats video, which I posted here, on 21 and 12 personnel in 3rd or 4th and short saying, we were at the bottom of the league (short yardage woes package), but with 3 or 4+ wide in thise same situations we were the best

TE room lacking a blocking TE besides Hill says, for me, we may be scrapping the 12 personnel package (yeah!)

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t expect a fast start to the season, at least not playing like we’re in mid-season form

I do think we can get some early season wins vs Ind, NE, NYJ, and/or Car, very favorable early schedule and a trip early to Buff means we don’t have to go up there late in the season for an automatic loss, when we need it most

My goal for them all along has been to hit stride 2nd half

  26. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bri – McLean just won himself a postseason starting spot. 95 pitches through 8 innings for the win. Add in that was a huge spot to pitch in. You can’t throw the usual suspects into a playoff series. Peterson, Senga and McLean, and maybe, if Jonah Tong shines like McLean, maybe Senga gets pushed out too. Mets need to do what they did last season and finish hot. They can get themselves out of the 3rd WC spot and avoid the Play-In game, and who knows, if they win 20 or or more games down this stretch, maybe the division.

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So Grier basically saying what he was doing was not sustainable. No fucking shit!!! So he finally came to the realization that having a shit ton of dead cap space and very little cap space to spend is a bad thing, and we’re supposed to be glad? Dude, I cannot express how far off this post is. It is not a disadvantage to the colts. They are not filming practice like the cheats. It is a disadvantage to the Dolphins. Especially in our timing based offense where guys need to be where the ball will be when they make their breaks.

You are all for our TE not being on the same page as the QB for the beginning of the season? He needs to be taking reps and he needs to have Tua’s trust that he will be exactly where he is supposed to be WHEN he is supposed to be there or Tua will just not throw the ball to him. Might as well take the TE out of the route tree at that point!

Put down that poison swill they call Kool-aid.

The neighbor called the cops. My dad’s friend explained the situation, heard both sides. At the end, the cops told the neighbor that what he did was wrong and he got what he deserved.

Cop would have taken the guy to jail for felony vandalism & criminal mischief

YOU CANNOT take the law into your own hands. EVER

I really like our new TE Greg Dulcich (PS), but he can’t block. He fights for yardage after the catch like Jonnu, but he’s even much worse at blocking than Jonnu… and Jonnu isn’t known as a stellar blocker, either.

  56. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We just can’t seem to get the TE position just right, in terms of an all-around starter (blocking and receiving) in the 2000s. From Randy McMichael to Mike Gesicki to Jonnu Smith, they all had warts.

Brian, if ONLY a Tyler Warren was available every year, man! Unfortunately, our trenches HAD to be reinforced after decimation… he wasn’t in the cards for us in the ’25 Draft.

You could literally post this every season and still have it be correct lol

  59. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jonnu last year caught a lot of balls, that would normally go to an RB or a slot WR, so we can make up a lot of those catches with RB/WR

looking forward to seeing Ollie in the passing game, he can YAC like Jonnu

I’d think Dulcich would swap places with Conner after 3 games of being active, so week 4

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s not about catching balls, it’s what you do when you catch it. Jonnu was invaluable when the rest of the offense couldn’t move the chains. Not sure which guy is going to step up or if anyone actually will

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

it starts with catching balls, your slot WR and RB are traditionally YAC players, so it goes without saying

Auburn at Baylor and GT at Colorado on tonight.

Auburn has a few players to keep an eye on. GT QB Haynes King is someone to keep an eye on as a day 3 QB selection.

M13/Bryan, I think PSU is going to give everyone a run for their money. They are probably going to have the most players of any team drafted in the next draft.

They brought in some great transfers. Especially 2 dynamic WR’s in Devonte Ross who runs a projected 4.32 and Trebor Pena who had a great year for Syracuse last year.

Dolphins OLB coach Ryan Crow arrested on battery charge

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Miami Dolphins outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow was arrested early Friday morning on a domestic battery charge, according to Broward County jail records.

No information about the details leading to Crow’s arrest was immediately available, but as of Friday morning he was being held in Broward County’s main jail without bond.

The Dolphins placed Crow on administrative leave following his arrest.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

huge emphasis on avoiding stuff like this and right before the season a coach gets in trouble

I have a feeling that administrative leave is permanent

is he tough? can he jump? Does he have good hands?

    ————

Singleton is 5’11, 190, per draft buzz (we never know for sure until the combine). He had 21 rushes last year with 1 TD and gets good YAC. I saw him take some punishment last year and he bounced back up every time. Great hands and runs good routes. Not sure how high he can jump. lol

Would probably had bigger stats but was at GT who doesn’t pass as much.

I’m actually hoping Ollie plays so well early on that when Wright comes back he’s the #3.

  65. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Since we picked up CB Julius Brents off waivers, we also picked up his contract for this year and 2026. Cap hit this year is about 1.5m with about 1.1m of his base salary fully guaranteed. His 2026 cap hit will be just over 1.8m of which none of it is guaranteed. So, if he does not work out this year, he can be cut next year with no loss.

  66. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Still waiting on the contracts of Judon, Lamm and Douglas to hit the books.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We are down to about 5m in cap space with contracts still pending on those 3. Lamm won’t impact it much.

Judon and Douglas will but will have to see how much of it is in incentives. Judon will probably cut into that top 51 cap balance by 1m to 1.5m. Douglas was said to be signing for 3m but will have to see what is what.

  67. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We don’t know that situation with Ryan Crow. MANY times domestic battery is bullshit. The wife can swing away and beat the shit out of you but if you defend yourself the cops take YOU to jail. When I was getting divorced, my wife wanted me out of MY house and I refused to move out so she faked it and called the cops on me. (scratched her own face, pinched the skin on her neck to make it red) Cops didn’t believe me of course so to jail I went.
