Where do you stand?

Don’t be insulted. I probably laugh at more comments on here than I should, just as you probably dismiss my negativity as “Get off my lawn” nonsense. In other words, I’m on the right side of the image above, and I’m firmly planted there until this team gives me a reason to feel otherwise. Signing this guy or that guy does nothing for me at this point. Whoever comes on board right now has an awful lot of work to do to learn how we do things here. Whether you think RB Jaylen Wright has an empty space between his ears, or that our offense is excessively complicated, he couldn’t really contribute because Mike McDaniel didn’t trust him. On the defensive side, yes, we signed veteran Rasul Douglas and his own words basically said I’m just running around not really sure what I’m doing because it’s really different from what I’ve done.

I can start with TE Darren Waller who I said from “GO” was a joke. Well, he’s getting some practice in now, 2 freaking weeks before the season starts but we’re expecting him to perform like he did in 2020 because he will be reunited with then Tight Ends Coach and now Offensive Coordinator Frank Smith. I choose to look at the fact that he quit on his team last season, retired, and somehow we thought he’d be just as good as Jonnu Smith was last season, who gave us 88 catches for 884 yards and 8 TD’s. Jonnu worked hard for his yards, many of his receptions were close to the line of scrimmage and the fact that he had a 10.0 YPC average is more of a testament of how hard he had to work more than Tua throwing him open downfield. I could literally see Waller catching one of these short passes, getting blown up and then maybe deciding he’s better off retired after all. So now we have TE Greg Dulcich (Ooh, Aah!) and fans are excited. After catching 33 passes his rookie year, Dulcich has fallen off the map. 13 receptions over the last 3 years for 81 yards. We’re saved!!! Or maybe Tanner Conner who is the king of offseason hype will be our savior! Perhaps the offensive penalty king TE Julian Hill will be the phoenix that rises from the ashes. Just don’t bet on it, ANY of it!

The other big BUZZ is rookie 5th RD pick Jason Marshall Jr. now playing the nickel spot after about 4 or 5 other guys, almost all of them no longer with the team in any capacity. Oh there’s hype, the kid is really showing man, he’s gonna be great. Uh huh, sure he is. He’s really an outside guy who has never played inside, it’s not going to be easy for him to make that transition, just as Rasul Douglas, despite being a long tenured vet will have his issues learning our scheme. I have seen comments here such as “Our rookies are doing great!” In preseason? In practice? Temper that enthusiasm until we see live regular season game action. We do catch a break with QB Daniel Jones starting instead of QB Anthony Richardson due to injury. If our front 7 can harass him we should be able to stifle their offense. The thing that worries me a little is Daniel Jones can run, he’s a good athlete, not as big and strong as Richardson, but maybe a better athlete who has some wheels and if we don’t stay disciplined around the pocket, he can chew up some yards on the ground if there’s space in front of him.

Now it’s not all bad, as long as our offensive line does their job. Also, a huge must, we must have RB De’Von Achane healthy for game 1. I like what I’ve seen from RB Ollie Gordon, but we don’t really want to see him and Jamycal Hasty all game long, that might be a problem. The front 7, as long as our rookies play well, and they will be leaned on because they make up a good amount of the rotation on the D-line with Kenneth Grant starting at LDE, backed up by Zeek Biggers, and then Jordan Phillips at NT behind Benito Jones, so that’s half of the D-line rotation with 1 starting. Our OLB and ILB units are a strength of this team. The safeties remain to be seen, although there’s a lot of hype of S Minkah Fitzpatrick, although SS Iffy Melifonwu has not looked good so far, but again, you have to wait until the regular season starts to see what we have. S Minkah Fitzpatrick has the pedigree to a great player, and hopefully the trade from the Steelers lit a fire under him to return to his former All Pro level of play. We can only hope.

As far as Tua, he doesn’t worry me until he worries me, which is if the O-line is playing poorly, or we’re playing a really good team. I expect Tua to play well against the Colts and WR’s Hill,Waddle and (Malik) Washington, and to a lesser extent, WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Tahj Washington all relatively healthy. The TE’s, who knows, I don’t expect to see anything good there at all, but maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised. BTW, the article title was a rhetorical question, you guys are mostly hopeless homers that eat up the positivity faster than Joey Chestnut inhales Nathan’s Hot Dogs, and you know it, and you’re proud of it too! I also can’t believe the absurd amount of hype over these Rivalry Uniforms that apparently will be worn ONCE during a 17 game season. At least when we debut those silly dark uniforms, it’ll be in the evening so we don’t die of the heat.

Analysis: Justin Herbert Vs Tua tagovailoa

    • Passing Volume and Production: Herbert has played in more games and has a higher volume of passing yards and passing touchdowns. This translates to a higher average of touchdowns and yards per game in his career so far.
    • Efficiency: Tagovailoa has a higher career completion percentage (68.1% vs. 66.5%) and a slightly higher passer rating (97.9 vs. 96.7). He also boasts a higher Yards Per Attempt.
    • Accuracy: While Herbert’s completion percentage is lower, he has shown impressive accuracy on various throws. Tagovailoa, however, has also demonstrated high accuracy, particularly in the 2024 season where he led the league in completion percentage.
    • Mobility/Rushing: Herbert has demonstrated more rushing ability, accumulating significantly more rushing yards and touchdowns than Tagovailoa.
    • Playoff Success: Both quarterbacks have had limited playoff success thus far in their careers, each with only one appearance as of the 2024-2025 playoffs.
    • Injuries: Both quarterbacks have faced injury concerns. Tagovailoa has a notable history with concussions, while Herbert played through various injuries before missing time at the end of the 2023 season.

In summary, Justin Herbert has produced higher raw passing numbers and demonstrated more mobility, while Tua Tagovailoa has shown slightly better efficiency and completion percentage. Each player possesses unique strengths and has continued to develop since entering the league together

The veteran tight end, who unretired after being acquired in a trade with the New York Giants, has yet to have a full practice despite the Dolphins still only talking about getting info football shape and “ramping up,” and now head coach Mike McDaniel has told the media that Waller will not take part in the first practice of Week 1.

The Dolphins will have to release an injury report — technically, it’s a “player participation report” — after practice late Wednesday afternoon and we’ll get some sort of an indication as to whether Waller is dealing with some kind of physical issue.

In the meantime, the situation continues to be, well, bizarre. There’s simply no other way to put it.

“We’re being very intentional with how we practice with Darren to do right by the Dolphins and do right by him,” McDaniel said Wednesday. “We have not pressed the threshold of three days consecutive intentionally. And tomorrow’s practice is third down, followed by the red zone emphasis. So it was intentional for him. You won’t see him today, but that’s not because of a setback.”

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I’m sorry, but he is getting paid several million which is more than half the roster who has to bust their ass in practice every practice. This babying shit is ridiculous.

What Tua Said About Tyreek, Facing X, Waller, and the Offense

As far as Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is concerned, the issue of his relationship with Tyreek Hill really isn’t an issue anymore.

After saying early in training camp that there was work to be done and then stating later that it still was a work in progress, Tagovailoa said Wednesday there’s really no reason to even bring up the subject.

“I would say it’s good,” Tagovailoa said of the relationship during his weekly press conference. “I think for what it was earlier in the summer, was just that. And I think people might have blown it out of proportion to where now, I mean, we’ve worked on it and I think that conversation is dead now.

“I think once people see Tyreek score on Sunday, everyone will forget about that. So we’re in a good spot, and we’ve been in a good spot for some time as well. So I’m really happy with that, and pleased with that, and I’m very pleased with how our guys are operating now in all rooms, tight ends, running backs, receivers, O-line, all of that.”

    TUA ON OTHER TOPICS

Tua touched on several other topics during his weekly media session, and here were the highlights:

On facing the Colts after missing the game last season when he was on IR because of his concussion: “Yeah, I would say it’s always a struggle when you’re not able to be out there with your guys. You work tirelessly with them, with getting the timing right, the footwork, progressions, spots with those guys, and just can’t do anything to help but cheer them on or have communication with them on the sideline. So, I’ve said it many times, but I really can’t be putting the team in that situation.”

On his confidence level in the offense for the regular season opener: “Well, only time will tell when we get to play on Sunday. So we know what the expectations are for our team. We know what the standard is for our team as a unit, right? Special teams, offense and defense. We got to go show that you don’t just talk about that. Yeah, sure, you want to talk about it with within the team, but we got to go show that for the talk. And we just got to go show it.”

On how much more challenging it is to face a team in its first game with a new defensive coordinator: “Yeah, it’s always tough, because I think we are a nuance to teams where they might show one thing against us, but never show it again against another team, and then that’s how other teams build off of OK, if this team found success against the Dolphins, then maybe we can try that, but add to it, so I would say it’s week to week is always going to be a challenge. But you go off of the base and fundamentals of what their defensive structure is, and then you go from there, and you build off of that.”

On facing former Dolphins CB Xavien Howard: “I think that’d be cool. I got a lot of respect for my dawg. He was really the last of the Mohicans. He was the OG when I got in here. And so I got a lot of respect for him. And, I mean, I think he was the longest Dolphin that I can remember since being here.”

On what would make a successful season: “To win it. I mean, that’s a successful season every time. We’re trying to win it all. If not, I don’t know why we’re playing football.”

On the rapport he’s been able to build with Darren Waller: “I think the cool thing about D-Wall is he’s been staying locked in mentally. When we were on the road, he’d come and ask me questions, like, ‘Hey, I seen you work this route with this guy. Why did you why did you throw it this way? Or why did you throw it that way? Or what are you seeing, or what are you looking at?’ I think he’s been really locked in throughout the past couple of weeks, and then we’ve had some reps with him as well. So we’ll see.”

On being elected as a team captain again: “Yeah, it means a lot. I say that because I think my leadership for myself — and you know how I’ve grown as a person as well — has changed over the years, with how I look at things within the team, with how I interact with guys, all of that. I think it’s changed and it’s grown. And I think as the season goes on, that’s not to say too for the guys that also got mentioned as captains it’s an honor for us to be named by our teammates, by coaches as well, to be named captain. And you can’t take that lightly. There’s a lot of guys that wanted to be captains on this team but didn’t get voted. So we don’t take that lightly, but we can definitely carry that into the season, because it’s going to take us players to get this ball moving.”

How Hill Is Showing Commitment to His Teammates

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill wasn’t named as a captain.

Dante Collinelli | 20 Hours Ago

Hill’s antics at the end of last season left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth, and Hill even admitted he didn’t deserve to be a captain anymore in an interview earlier this offseason. However, the Dolphins still need the star receiver to buy in this season.

And if you’re willing to take coach Mike McDaniel’s assessment at face value, it seems like Hill is doing what he can.

“What can be said about any of our leaders and how they’re communicating expectations, and then how people are more invested toward each other,” McDaniel said during his press conference Wednesday. “You can exemplify that by Tyreek Hill’s ownership of his job and his commitment to his teammates.

“So, as we kind of forecasted, that extra investment helps guys be a little more connected, specifically the way they need to be. So, yeah, there’s been a lot of growth across the board.”

Hill seemingly is showing that commitment while working back from an oblique injury he suffered during training camp. He’s been working in different practice periods since the team is trying to make sure he’s prepared and healthy for Week 1 against the Colts. Repairing Relationships

One of the more played-out storylines from Miami’s preseason was Hill’s relationship with Tua Tagovailoa.

The Dolphins’ quarterback gave a pretty candid response about the strain Hill’s comments from the end of last season put on the receiver’s relationships with everyone on the team. McDaniel believes he’s seen growth from Hill and throughout the Dolphins’ locker room.

“The standard is that you focus on that day and practice means something different to our guys now,” McDaniel said. “I think it’s more meaningful. There’s a closer intensity to that of a game, which is the whole point. And I think there, there’s been growth from Tyreek and Tua to you know, our center with a rookie guard or a new person on our team, or you can talk to [Tyrel Dodson], and Jordan Brooks.

“There’s a lot of connectivity in that in a team sport where 11 people are in charge of one result, it’s super important that they’re connected. And all the things that they’ve done, I think, have been positive.”

McDaniel’s reference to a renewed standard likely is related to his comments at the end of the season about several players repeatedly getting fined for tardiness and about the general perception that the team has a bad culture.

Hill has become the poster child for that, but every player or coach who’s been asked about Hill this offseason has commented on his renewed commitment to the team.

McDaniel went on to mention that Hill has stayed engaged with the offense and Tua while he’s been rehabbing his oblique injury, noting that Tua set the standard for what injury preparation can look like when he returned from his concussion against the Cardinals and Bills last season.

Obviously, all of this sounds good. Tyreek needed to recommit to the team this offseason, and it seems like the team’s new captains are taking accountability more seriously than last year’s group.

Will this version of Hill and his relationship with Tua hold up for the entire 2025 season? It’ll be impossible to know until the team meets some adversity. For now, Hill seems to be on the right track.

“I’m really excited about the whole voting process this year in general because each team is unique to its own, and this team I think was much more unified and the focus on those six guys were very clear so they were resounding vote-getters,” McDaniel said, via PFT’s Mike Florio. “I think it speaks to the team, I think [they] knew the assignment a little bit more and were focused on giving the keys of captainship to those that had earned it each and every day. And that’s what it speaks to me the most, is a football team that knows who they want to be led by.”

McDaniel added he was happy with the number of captains and that those six players (Tua Tagovailoa, Aaron Brewer, Alec Ingold, Jordyn Brooks, Zach Sieler, Bradley Chubb) stood out from the rest. The Dolphins coach declined to mention Hill by name but did briefly address the five-time All-Pro’s omission.

“I think it’s more about the guys that we picked and less about the guys that we didn’t because there are a lot of guys exemplifying tremendous leadership qualities that aren’t a captain on this football team,” continued McDaniel. “I think it’s more of a focus on who is and not who isn’t.”

Comeback no more: #Raiders WR Amari Cooper has informed the team that he no longer has the desire to play and intends to retire, per The Insiders. Cooper had signed at the end of camp in a hopeful reunion with the team that drafted. Now, he’s headed home from Las Vegas.

Having Waller on the 53 really fucks things up.

With him not being ready, that leaves us with just Julian Hill and Tanner Conner at TE. Yeah, they can bring up Rucci from the PS.

BUT, we only have 2 RB’s available for game 1. Yeah, they can bring up Jeff Wilson from the PS.

BUT, Minkah is healthy but the rest of the safety group have been dealing with injuries. We should be ok, though.

BUT, 2/5 of our OL (the right side) are dealing with injuries. We have healthy depth though that is not saying much. So, as far as bodies we should be good there also.

So, it looks like it comes down to needing to bring up a TE and a RB for the game.

BUT, you can only bring up 2 players from the PS each game. One of them has to be a kicker.

Do you go TE or RB for the other?

  47. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

RB, Ingold can play some TE too

we suck in 12/22 (running) personnel anyways, so Ingold would be available

  48. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we have enough skilled players, Waller is a WR anyways, his snaps can go to NWI

Waller will be needed 2nd half of season

  49. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Alain’s episode 553 has a good take on nickel CB, Dante says, based on Weaver’s position less secondary presser comment, Minkah and Iffy also can play it, so it will be based on who the slot WR is

6 DBs could look something like Minkah, Iffy, Duck, Rasul, Marshall + any 1 of Jones, Brents, Campbell, Davis Trader

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

wonder what Marshall does, if Minkah or Iffy are playing slot?

does he stay off the field and another S comes in?

we have options for sucky play, hopefully those replacing sucky aren’t too sucky

  55. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d like to see a rule change on kicks and punts, penalties like holding, when there’s a fair catch or touchback, should be waived off

For the kicking team, the fly guy, that runs OB on his own or doesn’t get back inbounds quickly, should also be waived off under same circumstances

Eagles had a guy move before the kickoff, and it was a touchback, it should be waived off too

      Mike McDaniel, Miami Dolphins

Dec 3, 2023; Landover, Maryland, USA; Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (1) talks with Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel (R) during a timeout against the Washington Commanders during the second quarter at FedExField. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

His redemption story following personal trials and tribulations as he climbed the coaching ladder, quirky personality and ability to generate some serious offense produced ample good feels during his first three seasons in South Florida, the first two ending in postseason berths. And yet the Fins are fast approaching the 25th anniversary of their most recent playoff win, and have too often come up small in big spots under McDaniel. Throw in a widespread perception that this team is soft and that McDaniel doesn’t hold his players sufficiently accountable, and you start to see what seems to be the writing on the wall. Owner Stephen Ross certainly left his mark on it in January, when he issued McDaniel and GM Chris Grier the dreaded vote of confidence wrapped around an unmistakable message, saying in a statement that read in part: “(C)ontinuity in leadership is not to be confused with an acceptance that status quo is good enough. We will take a hard look at where we have fallen short and make the necessary changes to deliver our ultimate goal of building and sustaining a winning team that competes for championships.”
