Where do you stand?

Don’t be insulted. I probably laugh at more comments on here than I should, just as you probably dismiss my negativity as “Get off my lawn” nonsense. In other words, I’m on the right side of the image above, and I’m firmly planted there until this team gives me a reason to feel otherwise. Signing this guy or that guy does nothing for me at this point. Whoever comes on board right now has an awful lot of work to do to learn how we do things here. Whether you think RB Jaylen Wright has an empty space between his ears, or that our offense is excessively complicated, he couldn’t really contribute because Mike McDaniel didn’t trust him. On the defensive side, yes, we signed veteran Rasul Douglas and his own words basically said I’m just running around not really sure what I’m doing because it’s really different from what I’ve done.

I can start with TE Darren Waller who I said from “GO” was a joke. Well, he’s getting some practice in now, 2 freaking weeks before the season starts but we’re expecting him to perform like he did in 2020 because he will be reunited with then Tight Ends Coach and now Offensive Coordinator Frank Smith. I choose to look at the fact that he quit on his team last season, retired, and somehow we thought he’d be just as good as Jonnu Smith was last season, who gave us 88 catches for 884 yards and 8 TD’s. Jonnu worked hard for his yards, many of his receptions were close to the line of scrimmage and the fact that he had a 10.0 YPC average is more of a testament of how hard he had to work more than Tua throwing him open downfield. I could literally see Waller catching one of these short passes, getting blown up and then maybe deciding he’s better off retired after all. So now we have TE Greg Dulcich (Ooh, Aah!) and fans are excited. After catching 33 passes his rookie year, Dulcich has fallen off the map. 13 receptions over the last 3 years for 81 yards. We’re saved!!! Or maybe Tanner Conner who is the king of offseason hype will be our savior! Perhaps the offensive penalty king TE Julian Hill will be the phoenix that rises from the ashes. Just don’t bet on it, ANY of it!

The other big BUZZ is rookie 5th RD pick Jason Marshall Jr. now playing the nickel spot after about 4 or 5 other guys, almost all of them no longer with the team in any capacity. Oh there’s hype, the kid is really showing man, he’s gonna be great. Uh huh, sure he is. He’s really an outside guy who has never played inside, it’s not going to be easy for him to make that transition, just as Rasul Douglas, despite being a long tenured vet will have his issues learning our scheme. I have seen comments here such as “Our rookies are doing great!” In preseason? In practice? Temper that enthusiasm until we see live regular season game action. We do catch a break with QB Daniel Jones starting instead of QB Anthony Richardson due to injury. If our front 7 can harass him we should be able to stifle their offense. The thing that worries me a little is Daniel Jones can run, he’s a good athlete, not as big and strong as Richardson, but maybe a better athlete who has some wheels and if we don’t stay disciplined around the pocket, he can chew up some yards on the ground if there’s space in front of him.

Now it’s not all bad, as long as our offensive line does their job. Also, a huge must, we must have RB De’Von Achane healthy for game 1. I like what I’ve seen from RB Ollie Gordon, but we don’t really want to see him and Jamycal Hasty all game long, that might be a problem. The front 7, as long as our rookies play well, and they will be leaned on because they make up a good amount of the rotation on the D-line with Kenneth Grant starting at LDE, backed up by Zeek Biggers, and then Jordan Phillips at NT behind Benito Jones, so that’s half of the D-line rotation with 1 starting. Our OLB and ILB units are a strength of this team. The safeties remain to be seen, although there’s a lot of hype of S Minkah Fitzpatrick, although SS Iffy Melifonwu has not looked good so far, but again, you have to wait until the regular season starts to see what we have. S Minkah Fitzpatrick has the pedigree to a great player, and hopefully the trade from the Steelers lit a fire under him to return to his former All Pro level of play. We can only hope.

As far as Tua, he doesn’t worry me until he worries me, which is if the O-line is playing poorly, or we’re playing a really good team. I expect Tua to play well against the Colts and WR’s Hill,Waddle and (Malik) Washington, and to a lesser extent, WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Tahj Washington all relatively healthy. The TE’s, who knows, I don’t expect to see anything good there at all, but maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised. BTW, the article title was a rhetorical question, you guys are mostly hopeless homers that eat up the positivity faster than Joey Chestnut inhales Nathan’s Hot Dogs, and you know it, and you’re proud of it too! I also can’t believe the absurd amount of hype over these Rivalry Uniforms that apparently will be worn ONCE during a 17 game season. At least when we debut those silly dark uniforms, it’ll be in the evening so we don’t die of the heat.

Rich, Thanks on McCoy. I wasn’t sure if he was gong to be ready or not. I didn’t see him out there yesterday so I figured as much.

I like him, AJ Harris and Avieon Terrell.

Rich, I also think Nussmeier showed the best this weekend so far of those who faced a top team.

Castellanos is going to be fun to watch this year, but he is a shorty, 5’11 I think.

My fav mid round QB, John Mateer had a good game but vs Illinois State.

Yea, I think Oklahoma is going to make some noise in the SEC this year. Mendoza from Indiana is another, though he may end up in the late 1st round.

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Mendoza looked ok his first start for IU. I was expecting him to be sharper vs ODU, but it was the first game of the season.

IU is going to have a good running game which is going to help him a lot. IU ran for 309 yards vs ODU.

He will have to step up this season though. IU’s defense is not as good as last year. They lost some good players on the DL. They do have 2 DB’s on my watch list in Safety Amari Farrell and CB Deangelo Ponds, both had INT’s that first game.

ND has no pass rush, but again Miami has a really good OL.

Kind of where this board is at. From Jeff Kerr, CBS Sports:

Ceiling: 10-7, lose in wild-card round

The Dolphins feel like they are the boom-or-bust team this year, and there isn’t much boom to them. The AFC East is down this year, and Miami has a chance because of Tyreek Hill and Jayden Waddle as the top pass catchers. If Tua Tagovailoa can stay healthy for all 17 games, Miami has a shot at the playoffs. The Dolphins have the star power to win games, and they are arguably one of the fastest teams in football. If the stars stay healthy, Miami will compete for the postseason.

    Floor: 6-11, miss playoffs

There are a lot of holes on this Dolphins team, starting with the depth on the offensive and defensive line. Cornerback is a major concern too, so the Dolphins may be giving up a lot of yards this year and may have trouble getting off the field. Miami is also 1-10 against teams that are above .500 over the last two seasons, something to consider when evaluating Mike McDaniel. Of course, Tagovailoa’s health is a concern as well. Things can go south for Miami in a hurry.

    Two moves I’d make:

1)Trade for Raiders TE Michael Mayer. Doubt it happens before week 1 at this point, and frankly I’m surprised we haven’t done so already. Perhaps the Raiders were asking too much in return? Dunno. He’d instantly become our TE1 being he can catch AND block. He knows the OZBS from his days at Notre Dame.

    2) Sign FA S Jabrill Peppers. The Patsies* are already on the hook for his $4M+ 2025 salary, meaning he should come cheap. A tandem of experienced Safeties in Minkah and Jabrill would very much help both our new and young stable of CBs. Signing Jabrill could turn us into a top-3 NFL Defense, IMO. He’s another chess piece who can play nearly every position on the field. WINNING!!!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Right on with Mayer!!!

With Peppers, he’s a chess piece. He doesn’t even necessarily have to play starting Safety for us. Heck, even if he does, it would allow us to play 3 Safeties… GREAT ADVANTAGE to us what with our new CB room.

        JMO, as always.

        • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And the selling point? He’s already raking in $4M from the Patsies* for this season… he should come really relatively cheap.

Watch the highlight reel above and tell me Anthony Weaver isn’t salivating at the prospect of adding Peppers to his Defense! I know I AM!

    4. Randy's avatar Randy says:

      M13,

I never blame injuries for losses. Nobody cares and it just doesn’t matter. Last I checked, they still play the games and are still expected to win.

I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again. Bad teams tend to have more injuries that linger because guys are less likely to play through stuff when the team sucks. Guys start thinking about themselves and not the team when the team sucks. Really good teams tend to have fewer injury issues because guys are willing to play through stuff.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I get you to a certain degree, to be sure. But I don’t think it’s fair to say that Tua, Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, Achane, etc, were able to play through their injuries, ya know?

I mean, in the modern NFL, you can NOT play through concussions (see Tua and Achane). And one certainly can’t play through a torn ACL (see Jaelan and Chubb)!!!

What I’m saying is that many of our STAR players have been brutally injured on the field over the last 2 seasons (and longer!!!), where they don’t have the choice to just “play through stuff”.

        • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And let us ALL give credit to T-STEAD, who quite literally played through stuff. No, not a concussion or a torn ACL (nobody can do that!), but he battled many physical issues over the years.

    5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Every year there is a small school QB that makes you go “Hmmm???” We see many of them be solid backups in the NFL and some rise and become starters.

This year, it could be a QB who transferred from Abilene Christian to Western Kentucky. Yeah, competition, but he is putting the numbers up and has a QB name that you would make up for a cheesy football movie, Maverick McIvor, 6’2, 214. In two games this season, he’s completed 69.5% for 706 yards, 8 TD’s, 0 INT’s. Last year he had 3,847 yards, 30 TD’s and 7 INT’s.

They do play LSU later this year so we will see what he is really made of. He could be a late day 3 guy or UDFA to look at if we don’t go early or mid on a QB.

    6. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Anticipating injuries is lame. I hope they all stay healthy and deal with injuries if they come.

      Ceiling 13-4

      Floor 10-7

      Playoffs either way!

    7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

      BBM,

Rocco Becht has looked pretty good for Iowa State. Should we draft him? 😜

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

It’s all iffy for me. Not Iffy on Becht but iffy on what they should do next draft. If Tua stays healthy all season, do they just draft one late again and keep rolling with Tua? If Tua goes down with another concussion, do you get one early with other glaring needs? Do you find a stop gap vet and draft a mid round QB to compete with Ewers?

If it’s a mid round QB, I like John Mateer and Rocco Becht. They are both draft eligible but both have a year of eligibility left. Who knows if they enter. NIL money talks.

    8. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

That line about injuries not mattering is just unreasonable!

If the Ravens, Chiefs, Bills, and Bengals, or any team for that reason, lose their starting QB for 6 games, I find it hard to believe they would make the playoffs!

If I recall correctly, the last time we won the AFC East is when Tom Brady suffered a season-ending injury.

Tom Brady suffered one significant season-ending injury during his NFL career: a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee in Week 1 of the 2008 season while playing for the New England Patriots. This injury required surgery and forced him to miss the entire 2008 NFL campaign.

The last time the Miami Dolphins won the AFC East Division title was in the 2008 NFL season. The Dolphins finished the 2008 season with an 11-5 record. They won the division title on a tiebreaker over the New England Patriots. This was a remarkable turnaround for the team, as they had finished the previous season with a 1-15 record.

      Fact!

    14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The problem I have with injuries is relying on a bunch of a players with long, detailed injury histories. Not every GM has as many as we do, and therefore, you have to pin that on the GM. We drafted Tua knowing he had injuries, concussions and a bad hip injury. We drafted Jaelan Phillips knowing he had a long list of injuries. We traded for Bradley Chubb who also came in with his own list of injuries. We brought in Terron Armstead who hadn’t completed a full season in his entire career. Now we bring in a TE who quit on his team and retired and we’re relying on him. It’s kind of hard to blame injuries as to why you lost when your GM builds a team with all these players that perennially get injured. Yeah, sometimes even healthy players get injured, guys w/o injury histories, but Chris Grier has a whole lot of important players that do, so therefore, you just can’t use it an excuse if that’s how you build your roster. Make sense?

what NFL teams has suffered the most injuries older Last 5 Years

Data from different sources and metrics provide varying answers to which NFL teams have suffered the most injuries in recent years (2020-2024).

Based on the total number of players who went on Injured Reserve (IR) during the season between 2014 and 2018, the Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, and Baltimore Ravens had the highest number of players on IR.

In more recent data for the 2024 season, the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns suffered the most injuries, specifically in terms of the number of games missed by players.

The San Francisco 49ers were cited as the league’s most injury-plagued team in 2024 when using adjusted games lost numbers, according to FTN Fantasy. The Carolina Panthers were ranked as the least healthy team in 2024, based on their average SIC Health Score. The Houston Texans were noted for having the biggest drop in adjusted games lost from 2023 to 2024, indicating an improvement in their injury situation.

It is important to note that different metrics and data collection methods can lead to varying results when assessing team injuries.

When Tua Tagovailoa is on the field, the Miami Dolphins generally have a strong chance of winning, particularly at home. He has demonstrated high efficiency in passing metrics like completion percentage and passer rating. His success is highlighted by the 2023 season, where he played a full slate of games.

2024 Season: Despite missing games in the 2024 season due to injury, Tagovailoa managed a 101.4 passer rating, ranking 9th in the NFL, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. He completed 72.9% of his passes for 2,867 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in the 11 games he played.

He led the NFL in passer rating (105.5) and third-down passer rating (130.1) in 2022, becoming the youngest player since Dan Marino (1984) to achieve this.

Home Game Win Percentage: His 80% winning percentage at home throughout his career is the best among active NFL quarterbacks.

Each of the sports writers and editors for the Sun Sentinel picked the total amount of wins for the Dolphins this year.

3 picked 9-8, 1 picked 8-9, one picked 6-11 and this one picked 10-7 LOL

      Dolphins prediction: 10-7
Someone needs to be an optimist, right? Sure, a 10-win season might be pushing it, but maybe there has been enough time for everything to click. Maybe coach Mike McDaniel finds the right balance of toughness, respect and relatability to get the most of these players. Maybe Tua Tagovailoa stays healthy (or Zach Wilson steps up). Maybe the offensive line holds. Maybe there’s a solid running game. Maybe the defense builds on last year. Maybe Miami’s schedule isn’t the worst. If you don’t think the Dolphins get 10 wins this season, you might as well put your hopes on hold for a few more years, until after the next rebuild.

a professional opinion like this to pick a record should be concrete, you pick it, because you think certain things will happen throughout the season, and don’t pick it then try to down play it and give excuses

in the initial picks here I said 7-10, because of the CBs getting torched in PS, after seeing things change with Marshall and some acquisitions I changed it to a more favorable one, granted I did it before the final roster was announced

Rock – The good teams don’t have 1/10 of the amount of “ifs” as the Miami Dolphins do. So many things have to go better than usual for this team, while the good teams like Buffalo, Baltimore, KC, just hope things don’t get worse.

I disagree with Joe Shad here, but you guys like these types of articles so here you go.

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins have not won a playoff game in 25 years.

The longest streaks beyond Miami are held by the Raiders, Jets and Bears.

Even Detroit and Cleveland have had more recent postseason success.

That’s the bad news. But we’re here to tell you why the Dolphins may defy the oddsmakers and not only make the postseason in 2025, but win a playoff game.

Yes, we’re here to tell you why Miami can do something they haven’t done since the days of Dave Wannstedt and Jay Fiedler.5 Reasons Dolphins Can Win A Playoff GameTua Tagovailoa is a winning quarterback

Tua Tagovailoa has the fourth-best winning percentage among NFL quarterbacks since 2020, at 61.3.

When Tagovailoa is healthy, he is extremely accurate and extremely dangerous. And he’s grown as a leader.

      Dolphins still have dangerous weapons

There are few teams that wouldn’t give up their WR1, WR2, RB1 trios for Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and De’Von Achane.

Mike McDaniel believes he can get all three back on track in 2025, after setbacks in 2024. We are not that far removed from the Dolphins scoring the ball to the tune of 70 points against the Broncos.

Defensively? How many teams would trade their Edge 1, Edge 2 and Edge 3 for Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb and Chop Robinson?

If healthy, Miami should have one of the most feared pass rushes in the NFL.

      Improved offensive line play

Some say the Dolphins will have one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL in 2025, but that’s not realistic.

James Daniels and Jonah Savaiinaea should both be upgrades at the guard positions. Austin Jackson is healthy.

And Patrick Paul has exceeded expectations in his bid to capably replace offensive line leader and standout Terron Armstead.

The Dolphins are younger, faster and closer

The Dolphins had a culture problem last season and McDaniel and GM Chris Grier are not running from it.

Players gone since the start of last season include Jalen Ramsey, Jevon Holland and Odell Beckham, Jr.

Players have been working before and after practice. Players say they’ve been on time and focused. And they’ve spent a lot more time together off the field.

As Grier said, the team is also younger and faster in 2025.Anthony Weaver is a key to team success

Former defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is clearly intelligent. But second-year coordinator Anthony Weaver was a hit in 2024.

Weaver make strong strategic decisions and also connected well with his players. Miami believes Weaver can find a way to disguise secondary weaknesses with pass rush strengths.

Weaver could very well have landed a head coach job in the offseason. Instead, this will be the first time McDaniel has had the same defensive coordinator in consecutive seasons.

Bonus: Echo chamber of negativity out of hand

Of 32 NFL teams, USA Today says Miami enters the season as the 28th-best in its preseason power poll.

      Twenty-eighth? Seriously?

Miami, with a soft reset of its roster and salary cap, is unlikely to make a Super Bowl run.

But these 4-5-6 win predictions seem to have gone too far.

We think a playoff win is just a likely as a 4-6 win regular season.

“They talk, we do,” is a motto/theme for the Dolphins in 2025.

      Stay tuned.

Hey, I’ll drink some of that Kool-Aid, 10-7 is not out of the question. Bottom line is health.

I will call it the Larry Borom factor. If Borom has to start a game this season, we will lose an extra game. If Borom does not start a game this season, we will win an extra game.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t think someone predicting 10 wins is being optimistic, its someone expecting mostly status quo with a healthy Tua

the locker room has been ridden of malcontents, its gotten younger (less injuries), sure there’s going to be mistakes (growing pains), but those replacing the injured are susceptible to mistakes too

2023, when the pass rush was strong, our D was very good, we now have 4 pass rushers

don’t underestimate the Washingtons, we really haven’t had a good slot WR, since Welker

I’m now predicting 12-5, if I said 11-6 I’d be doing the same thing the 10-7 guy did

Our defensive roster has improved from last year. DL is a wash. Sieler and Benito return. We lost Campbell, but gained Grant and Phillips. OLB/Edge is a huge upgrade over last year. ILB is solid and has good depth. Safety position is better than last year. CB has taken a step back but upgraded since a month or so ago. I don’t think Ramsey was a huge loss to the secondary. His head wasn’t in it last year as he got beat several times and same with Fuller before the concussion.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        no question

there’s going to be times when opposing QBs are going to light up our secondary and people are going to say how bad our CBs are, but our CBs get lit uo every year from time to time, as does every other team’s CBs

Add TCU QB Josh Hoover to the watch list as a possible mid round pick. He looked good last night in embarrassing BB in his college debut. Just a couple off throws but has a good arm and threw some dimes.

Also, TCU Safety Bud Clark was already on my watch list as a mid round guy. He had a really nice pick 6. He was on my watch list last year, but didn’t enter the draft. I have no clue why as he built a nice resume already in his first 3 seasons starting with 146 tackles, 1 FF and 11 INT’s.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Next draft will have a good safety class. I think Bud Clark will climb draft boards and go in the early 2nd round though. He’s a Ball Hawk. He’s just, in the past, wasn’t a physical tackler. Maybe because of his slight frame at 6’2 and only 185 lbs.

I just read that he stayed another year in college because he wanted to improve on his physicality in defending the run. He wanted to be considered one of the best all round safeties when entering the draft.

We had the best DC in football with Fangio and we couldn’t even win out for the division we had laying in our hands. We’ve spent so much offensive talent, and the returns have been average at best. You have to score points no matter who you are playing, and we just aren’t consistent doing that. I think the other ones we might win are the yets and pats but they’re also road games late in the year in the cold. I’d favor the home teams there. Maybe we beat the Bengals if they’re crashing, but I don’t think so.

I usually just split conference games, but I’m giving the bills 2 wins. We beat NY and NE early and lose late.

As I stated yesterday, I could see a ceiling of 13-4 for us this season if everything goes right and we stay healthy: I’m naturally optimistic. However, the realist in me says 10-7… MAKING the playoffs.

    66. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I really don’t care what the national media thinks of us… they ALWAYS poop on us and have for a very long time. My personal expectations? PLAYOFFS.

And if the injury bug strikes yet again, I think it’s high time to revamp the entire roster into players who aren’t so susceptible to injury. That means a new HC and a new GM. And coming from me, it goes without saying that means a new owner as well.

It always defines us and always ruins us. It’s what happens when you roll the dice on guys that often get injured. It’s kinda weird how life works but my local KFAN was talking about how teams and ownership in the NFL view losing your starting QB. The guys who follow and report on the NFL said teams still expect to win. They said owners especially still expect to win because they’re paying a backup QB a lot of money to do his job. I was a little surprised but not really. That’s just sports. It was interesting to listen to the conversation though. And, the radio guy pointed out that teams have been successful and even won SBs with backup QBs.

I guess for me if you’re a team that can’t win without your starting QB then you’re just not a very good team. Even in this age of doing everything possible to prop up QBs, so they all sell jerseys.
