Here’s the story of the Miami Dolphins

Today, it really was just a “Series of Unfortunate Events” Somehow or another, this team manages to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It never comes down to just one play, but one play that strongly affected what the Dolphins were trying to accomplish at the end of the game, which was to leave Justin Herbert and the LA Chargers very little time, maybe 10 seconds or probably even less before we scored the TD that gave us a short lived lead of 27-26 with just 46 seconds remaining. The play I’m speaking of was a pass play to WR Malik Washington at 00:59 in the game. A screen pass and Malik Washington took it towards the sidelines attempting to turn the corner but he was tackled, basically picked up and thrown out of bounds by Chargers nickel back Tarheeb Still. That play stopped the clock at 00:52. The next play, QB Tua Tagovailoa finds TE Darren Waller in the endzone for a TD with 00:46 seconds remaining. The extra point was good so we had the lead at 27-26.

Instead of kicking it out of the endzone, K Riley Patterson gives the Chargers a returnable kick at the 1 yard line and return it they do, as Chargers KR Nyheim Hines, just brought up from the PS today, returns the ball to the LA 41 yard line. The return takes 7 seconds off the clock, and Herbert under duress throws incomplete on 1st down leaving 00:34 seconds remaining. The next play would be “The Lucy” play, because the Dolphins pass rush gets to Herbert, but he shrugs it off, steps away and completes a pass to WR Ladd McConkey who avoids a tackler and takes the ball to the Miami Dolphins 17 yard line, knocked out of bounds by CB Jack Jones. The Chargers then run 2 plays to wind down the clock and force the Dolphins to use their timeouts, we had 2 remaining. With 00:09 seconds remaining, from the right hash, Chargers K Cam Dicker (Dicker the Kicker) nails the game winning FG leaving 00:05 on the clock for the Dolphins. Dicker the Kicker does his job and kicks the fuck outta the ball allowing no return for the Dolphins. Dolphins take over with 00:05 seconds at their own 35 yard line due to kick out of the end zone.

Could the Dolphins pull off another Miracle in Miami? Chargers defense is in the prevent, a few guys are deep, they rush 3 guys and few guys are mid deep. Tua takes the snap and fires 5-YARDS-DOWNFIELD to WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, maybe that was supposed to be the big surprise because it was his first target of the day, but the pass is quickly snuffed out by Pro Bowl and All-Pro S Derwin James to end the game. Like I said previously, one play never defines the entire game, that didn’t lose the game because it would have literally taken a another Miracle in Miami to win this one, but regardless of that fact, how do you throw the ball 5 yards when you need 65, and still get intercepted?

This will be the one game where Tua’s stat line will look worse than he actually played. His first INT, the very first pass play of the game was pass that WR Jaylen Waddle bobbled and at first glance, looked he lateraled the ball to Chargers SS Tony Jefferson. Waddle totally was at fault, it wasn’t Tua’s fault this time. Waddle bobbled it right into the defenders hands for an INT. Not a good start. The defernse wasn’t nearly as bad as previous weeks, we had a 13-9 lead at the half, so in my mind, holding the Chargers to 3 FG’s was a good showing for the woeful D.

In the 3rd quarter, the LA Chargers adjusted to the issues they were having on the right side of their O-line, and Herbert starting getting in a rhythm and RB Kimani Vidal started picking up huge chunks of yardage. The Chargers took 23-13 lead, scoring 14 unanswered points in the 3rd Quarter. RB Kimani Vidal finished with 18 carries for 124 yards, but Dolphins RB De’Von Achane was better, he finished with 128 yards on 16 carries and 2 TD’s. What would this team be without De’Von Achane? There are times when he IS the offense. Whether he’s running the ball or catching it, he does everything. Teams know this and that’s how Tua’s 2nd INT came about. Achane was set out wide in the slot, and Tua stared him down the entire time with 06:02 in the 3rd Quarter remaining. He’s great, but you have to use other players or defenses tend to concentrate on him, facilitating Tua’s 2nd INT. Tua’s final line was 21-35 205 yards, 1 TD and 3 INT’s. Definitely uglier than he played and this time he actually should have clinched the win for us on his second to last drive, but like I said earlier, a series of unfortunate events.

So now the team is 1-5, and in Tua’s presser after the game, he stated that players are not showing up for meeting, player only meetings, and others are coming late. There’s a leadership problem here, and that starts with the Head Coach. Mike McDaniel doesn’t seem to have the pulse, or respect of this team. In his presser, he said the team didn’t quit, he’d know by the 3rd quarter if that were the case, whatever the heck that means! GM Chris Grier missed on his first 2 picks in the draft. At #13 we took Michigan DT Kenny Grant. He’s been rated at the bottom of the barrel, and same goes for our next pick OG Jonah Savaiinaea, who we traded a 3rd RD pick in addition to our 2nd RD pick to move up in RD 2 to #37 to get him. By now, we know when Grier trades up for someone, that guy just ain’t gonna be worth it because he’s whiffed on every single trade up since he’s been here!

So 1-5, our rookies are struggling, one on offense and 1 on defense, you can’t blame the same position coaches for both of them, and our other rookies aren’t doing anything either really, which includes 5th RD picks DT Jordan Phillips and S Dante Trader, 6th RD pick RB Ollie Gordon who gets 2 carries a game, and 7th RD picks QB Quinn Ewers, who has been the emergency QB and in my estimation, we HAVE AN EMERGENCY!!!!! Time to get that kid meaningful practice reps with the ones and in a few weeks, let’s see what he can do! We also drafted DT Zeek Biggers in RD 7, and he’s been in the rotation on the D-line, not because he’s great, but because Grier left the cupboard bare and we basically have no choice but to start most of our rookies. He also had no choice to sign veteran CB’s Jack Jones and Rasul Douglas and just like signing DE/DT Calias Campbell last season, Grier gets no credit for that with me, just picking up leftovers. Before we give him credit for TE Darren Waller, let’s see how much he actually plays as he always seems to be QUESTIONABLE on the injury report and missed the first 3 games with a hip injury that I guess is still nagging.

If you look at this team’s future, even if you look as far as just this season, what’s left of it, it’s not pretty. We’re 1-5, and that almost guarantees we will not be in the playoffs, barring some sort of ridiculous turnaround here. This team is foundering, the finger pointing has begun, and the lack of real leaders on this team are showing what happens when that’s the case. Clearly, Mike McDaniels leaves a lot of responsibility on the players to police themselves and do what they need to do. He’s no disciplinarian, and he can’t become one either. If any of you were thinking DC Anthony Weaver is in line for HC, just know his defense is awful. You can take into account that the roster is weak, he needs to lean on a bunch of rookies on the D-line, and they have been pushed off the LOS as if they’re wearing roller skates at times, but what about the veterans like Zach Sieler, Jalean Phillips, Bradley Chubb etc etc. What the heck happened to Chop Robinson? That’s on Weaver!

This team was set up for the offense to carry it. QB tua Tagovailoa, RB De’Von Achane, WR’s Tyreek Hill (before he got injured) and Jaylen Waddle were supposed to make this team a contender, while the defense if Chubb, Phillips , Judon and Chop could bring some heat on opposing offense, along with solid tackling from the quality inside backers Jordyn Brooks, Tyrell Dodson, KJ Britt and Willie Gay cleaned up the tackling. Trading CB Jaeln Ramsey and TE Jonnu Smith for S Minkah Fitzpatrick has ended up a wash. Jonnu isn’t tearing it up for the Steelers and Jalen Ramsey is playing OK. Minkah is 3rd on the team in total tackles, and many of those are way downfield, chasing RB’s down after they got past the front 7, which happens all too often. Before this game (LOSS), the offense was ranked 21st. That’s just not good enough, not for a team that needed the offense to carry it. The defense is woeful, and I don’t expect it to get any better any time soon.

Heads should roll, and who replaces them in the interim isn’t my concern. This team is DOA after 6 games, so I don’t care if it’s Darrell Bevell (QB’s and Passing Game Coordinator), or FRank Smith (Offensive Coordinator) (Although McDaniel calls/called the plays), it doesn’t matter. I don’t care if it’s Anthony Weaver, although I don’t feel it’s deserved. Maybe he’s the best guy as far as getting the players attention, because that surely needs to happen. Whomever it is, they are a band aid on a shotgun wound that has bled out. The most important thing to me is that Stephen Ross, or whoever is making these decisions don’t try any half measures. They simply cannot fire Head Coach Mike McDaniel and call it a day. This two-headed snake stinks of rot and they both need to be cut off! Grier AND McDaniel MUST GO. Either both, or just the leave the rot until the end of the season.

CG has been involved with the Dolphins for 20 years, I believe. Yet, he has never learned what it takes to build a perennial playoff contending/wininning team. He can find pieces, he cannot build a team.

He can’t hire coaches that can be successful here because he doesn’t have quality depth snd poor cap/contract management and throws away draft capital as if it’s change.

    He’s fucking awful, imo…lol.

Then, MM believes leadership is self-discovered or a community endeavor. No it’s NOT. The definition of leadership…is to lead and that means as a leader you hold yourself accountable, leading by example, and demanding excellence from everyone or you’re gone.

The team is lost, they rule my committee…fucking players’ only meetings?! Is it mandatory? Wtf are they doing? What a shitshow…imo, lol

Tua, is no leader, no franchise QB, and has lost the locker room…imo, lol

    I’m so sad…

    ________________________________

So 6 years, in 2020, we had 11 picks. Only 2 still remain with the team, QB Tua Tagovailoa and T Austin Jackson who is on IR. TWO OF ELEVEN!! WTFF!!!

2021, 7 picks, 3 are with the team, 1 on is on IR (Liam Eichenberg), 1 spent the majority of 2 seasons on IR (Jaelan Phillips), and besides Waddle who is a good starter at best, everyone else is GONE!

    2022, 4 picks, 1 remains as a ST’s player, just fucking horrible!

2023 Only 1 of 4 picks remains, the best player on this shitty roster, RB De’Von Achane

2024, Chop Robinson has regressed and his playing time greatly diminished. Patrick Paul looks like a legit starter. Jaylen Wright couldn’t find the field when healthy, and now he can’t find it because he’s not healthy in 2025. Malik Washington looks like a nice slot receiver and return man. Kamara and McMorris got the axe. Tahj is a depth WR

2025, Kenny Grant is starting, but despite getting his first sack of his career, he’s been looking like he’s on roller skates, getting blown off the line most of the time. Jonah Savaiinaea looks like a turnstile and despite starting, he’s rated as the worst OG. Jordan Phillips is starting out of necessity, and he looks overmatched most of the time. Jason Marshall is on IR, Trader is a backup who looks like a backup at best. Ollie Gordon doesn’t get more than a carry and a yard or two before exiting the field. Quinn Ewers is the emergency QB every week but I think he should start getting practice reps with the ones for a few weeks and then mercifully put Tua’s era (error) to bed. Zeek Biggers is part of the worst D-line rotation in football.

So, there’s Chris Grier, and I didn’t yet point out how many fucking draft picks he traded to get Hill, trade up to get shitty players in the draft, trade for Jalen Ramsey, Bradley Chubb. He couldn’t keep his own players like Christian Wilkins and Robert Hunt.

He’s been an awful GM Markey, and this draft is looking a whole big load of shit so far, and the trade up is looking positively horrendous.

From 2020 to 2023, 4 years, 7 players out of 26 picks still remain. You think that’s good? OMG, that has to be a league worst for shit sure. He’s garbage!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

this type of thinking is why Grier is still our GM, just as easy as you can write badly of his picks, someone else can write favorable

the point is its not about individual picks, its about building a team

between MM and Grier their ideas didn’t work

they’ve played bad, since our game week3, like a skunk we left our stink on them😜

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

it was written before camp Grant’s upper body isn’t NFL ready, he needs another year in the weight room

that’s become more obvious with each game, so why did Grier put the weight of the D on the shoulders of a not ready rookie? Incompetence

something isn’t right overall with the players, the coaches can’t seem to put their finger on and fix

is it as simple as fixing Grant to stop the run?

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – I did that post just to show how bad he’s been drafting. I’d have to spend another half an hour showing how poorly he “built” this team, which I don’t think was built at all, he basically just filled 53 roster spots. Not one unit on this team is elite. What is obvious though is that he tried to make an elite offense, trading for Hill, trading up to get Waddle, drafting Achane (His best pick ever), trading up to get Eichenberg, trading up to get Savaiianaea. Bringing in a vet LT who was a great one but couldn’t stay healthy in Terron Armstead. Bringing in Jonnu Smith, and now Waller. Also, skimping at the backup QB position because he probably didn’t want to threaten his fragile QB, despite knowing his fragile QB would miss time if he did anything that most QB’s do like run for a bunch of yards and NOT slide before the 1st down was had, or on 3rd or 4th and short, get behind the center and push for a 1st down.

You say I pointed out the bad, and someone could easily point out the good. Be that someone right now, point out the good. I’ll wait . . .

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It just gives you a sense of the roster though. Neither had to earn the job, and in reality, both were just handed the job because we had no one on the roster better thanks to CG the Magnificent

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

I get the frustration but that happens on every team every year. I’m glad they’re getting reps. I’m also glad they put some equity into the LOS. We’ll see how it all works out. I think there are a lot of bigger problems on this team than 2 rookies not looking good yet.

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

OK! I won’t throw a wet blanket on your wetter blanket! Lol

  13. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Mike E,

I was done with Grier when he let Hunt and Wilkins walk. Those were two of his best picks and he chose to overpay other GMs picks. If you don’t even like your own picks, why would we keep you as GM?

Part of the GM job is managing finances and potential losses. Dude knew his top OL and DL were coming up on getting a big contract and he just ignored it to fill other positions. Just like Jerry Jones, who also can’t field a decent team every year, Grier mismanaged his roster. Not only did he refuse to pay his best picks, he wasted future picks on FAs that didn’t work out. He went from 11 picks in 2020 to 4 picks in back-to-back years. You can’t rebuild like that.

QB is the most important position in football by a mile. Washington went from trash to the playoffs due to Daniels. Indy will probably go to the playoffs due to Jones. TB is a playoff contender mainly due to Baker. Grier has refused to look at solid QBs because Tua is a bitch. That should not be your criteria as a drafter.

  14. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Several of Tagovailoa’s teammates were asked Monday about his comments. Many declined to discuss any locker-room issues.

“I try to keep those things out of the media,” left tackle Patrick Paul said. “I think that’s something that we should handle internally. I don’t think we should be giving out all the details of that.”

Asked if Tagovailoa’s comments were handled internally, Paul shook his head.

    “I’m not sure,” he said.

  15. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

While I feel it’s far too early to accurately assess the ’26 Draft QBs, I must admit… I’m seeing curious warts with all of the top prospects. And remember, some of these top prospects have the eligibility to stay in college an additional year.

The top-3 QBs that I have my eyes on right now (due to size, running ability, and arm) are (in no particular order) Fernando Mendoza, LaNorris Sellers, and John Mateer.

There are certainly others who can be considered as top-tier QBs (Ty Simpson and Dante Moore, for example), but their size gives me cause for concern… rightfully or wrongfully, after seeing Tua get concussed time after time.

We’ll see what happens, and so I’m very interested in watching QB play in college football the rest of this season.

You say I pointed out the bad, and someone could easily point out the good. Be that someone right now, point out the good. I’ll wait . . .

the point of saying that wasn’t for someone to point it, it was meant as pointing out the good or bad was irrelevant

Grier has no clue how to build a team, and for that reason he must be shown the door at season’s end (sooner the better, but GMs aren’t usually canned in-season)

  18. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    MF13,

This draft is very weak for QBs and I think the best ones will go back for one more year. Moore, Simpson, and Manning are most likely wanting another year of seasoning. Sellers could use one more year, but he’ll probably be a top 5 pick and leave. He looks like a less talented Lamar though and LSU exposed some huge flaws. He’d need a couple years to get to decent starter status if he improves. Still, he’s the best available right now.

Mateer looked awful. Mendoza plays in a limited decision offense and hasn’t looked amazing. Nuss is awful. Beck isn’t talented enough. I hate that the guys that look the best would need to give me high school tape just for a decent sample. Just not a good year.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

In the absolute ‘here and now’, I agree with ya, New Age. That’s why I mentioned “warts” on the top current prospects.

There’s still plenty of college football to be played this season in order for these prospects to knock the ‘warts’ away… we’ll see.

But by and large and at this moment, I absolutely agree with ya, New Age. I certainly wish we had a better looking class by which to draft a QB in ’26 as how it looks now.

He also paid really good money for a RG, James Daniels who was coming off a serious injury, an achilles injury. When you have a major injury, sometimes technique goes out the window because you’re favoring that injured limb, so now he has a pec injury. The one thing we needed was a consistent contributor and he couldn’t find one, and the guy he drafted gives less resistance than a blocking sled. Since the draft and QBs are a hot topic, which it should be, I’m going to mention a couple things.

#1. Strong or weak- Whether a draft is QB strong or weak sometimes takes time to figure out. Could be at the combine or maybe several years later before we get an idea. If you get your guy then it was a great QB draft for you, but if you don’t you may consider it a weaker class. Of course, sometimes it’s blatantly obvious when it’s a weak class.

#2 “Warts”/ weaknesses- Every QB coming out has flaws/warts, it’s whether you can fix them or live with them. Even Peyton, Marino, Mahomes, Brady, etc.

My top 3 guys and the only ones right now that I would take in the 1st are…

#1 Dante Moore- His biggest weakness right now is experience. He has decent size at 6′ 3″, but just needs more playing time. He’s obviously very talented, but also very mature for his age. He actually sat behind Gabriel last year. How many college kids would transfer to a school knowing they had to sit a year??? It paid off big time. He had the talent as a freshman at UCLA, no doubt, but he sat and learned how to play the position for a year. That’s a big plus in my book.

#2 Ty Simpson- Again, his biggest weakness is experience. At 6′ 2″ he’s average in height, but that arm is special just like Dante Moore. The kid looks like he has that “it” factor, but time will tell.

#3 Fernando Mendoza- Is he a system QB? He has great size and a good arm, but is just average in running ability. IMO, the kid can play and I wouldn’t have a problem if Miami drafted him. I don’t get scared away when someone mentions “system” QB, because there have been many who have had success as just that.

if I was gonna have to keep one between MM or Grier it would be MM. Grier has to go. In reality they both go we put weaver as interim. hire a GM and let him find a coach

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Debating MM vs Grier is like the chicken and the egg

    both guys have failed

I don’t blame Grier for the mess on the field so much game to game, what I do blame him for is trying to put a playoff competitive team together, when he should’ve blown it up

he paid Tua, handed all of those extensions to dissatisfied players

he has no clue how to build a team

MM is coaching with 1 hand tied behind his back, with a shell of a Tua, and no OL, but he’s never been able to in-game adjust, he can’t design plays as you’d expect

bottomline is both need to be canned, sooner the better

the sooner they’re gone the sooner the stench of those 2 idiots is gone

the Capri kid’s coaching is bad enough, and his pressers are the cherry on top

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rich, I agree, Simpson and Reese will be projected mid 1st rounders by draft time.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Yep, we agree on most of these players. Ty Simpson could very well stay another year in school, but if he declares, he needs to be at the top of our GMs list!!! As for Reese, I’ve been hearing he’s been the best player on that defense this year.

  36. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rich, I don’t think you could go wrong with either Ohio State ILB. OSU seemed to give Reese the role Sonny Styles had last year where Styles racked up 6 sacks. Styles is more their cover ILB now. Reese is more the spy/blitz LB on pass downs.

They are both listed at 6’4, 243. Reese projects to run in the 4.5’s and Styles (a former safety) is projected to run in the 4.4’s.

Only problem is both will probably go in the 1st round.

  37. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

It really sucks trying to do a mock draft when there are so many holes year after year from poor drafting and trading away picks.

Additionally, the National Weather Service says this game “is certainly a system worth keeping an eye on” as they believe stronger storms could come to fruition.”

Anyone else see this for Dolphins-Browns game.

  40. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t think there’s any rush to pick a QB this year….especially if none of them are great prospects. I’d be just fine with building the rest of the team or gathering picks for the next couple years after this one.

Getting a new GM concerns me a little in that a new GM may feel compelled to go after a QB no matter what. I think that would be stupid.

Joe Flacco says “Hey Tua, I know it sucks when your defense gives up a late score, but the QB’s job is to WIN THE GAME. You don’t say “Hey, I scored the winning TD with 4:42 remaining”. “You get the ball back at the end of the game with a chance to win it, GO WIN IT!!”

Evidence again that the NFL is rigged????

In the Chiefs/Lions game, ZERO penalties were called on the Chiefs.

It was noted several times during the game Mahomes “kissing up” to the refs smiling and joking around.

In the first quarter, the Lions scored a TD. After a 1.5 minute discussion, the refs throw a flag and negate the Lions TD.

The ref told Dan Cambell that the call came from New York to call the penalty. New York can’t do that, they

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Got sidetracked but, not sure if the NY office can review for penalties or not.

Now, it was a legit penalty in the end from what I understand, but the refs were confused about it.

The main problem is the ref told Campbell that the call was made by the New York office, but the NY office said the call was made by the refs on the field.

      IDK, sound fishy.

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t know if the trade talks between the NY Giants and Dolphins for Waddle are true, but I’d trade Waddle for the right price. If we could get a 1st or 2nd RD pick for a guy who ranks anywhere from 15 to 40 most seasons as a WR, I’d take it. It would have to be a top of the RD pick if it were a 2nd though.

  53. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I can’t take credit for this, but some are calling this upcoming game the “noodle bowl”. LOL. …Tua vs Gabriel.

  54. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Actually, I am hearing now that it was a legal play by the Lions and the TD should have been good. They called illegal motion on Goff, but it is only illegal motion if his hands go under center before he went in motion. His hands never went under center so it should have been a legal play.

NY (the rule guru’s) told the refs on the field to call the penalty anyway. The announcers asked their ref correspondent and he said it was not a penalty. Next thing you know they throw the flag.

Conspiracy theorists are saying it involves the NFL and their partnership with sportsbook betting companies. Basically, saying that there was more money placed on the Chiefs to score the games first TD so the reversal call saved said betting company a lot of money.

I looked but I couldn’t find anything in the rules that mentions hands needing to be under center, just if the player lines up under center, which Goff did for a split second.

      **

ARTICLE 8. ILLEGAL MOTION. …It is also Illegal Motion if a player under or behind center goes in motion and fails to come to a complete stop for at least one full second prior to the snap.

      **

So, I think it was illegal motion, but again it’s not a reviewable play, so it was some procedurally BS that new york called it in.

Are they going to start calling in missed holding calls and change bad PI calls after a play is over?
