BYE Week Blues

We all have opinions, and here on this blog, we all share them. We also share what NFL “Insiders” and our own Miami Dolphins Beat Reporters say and think. I’ve certainly been sharing my own strong opinions as well, and today I’m going to compare and contrast mine to the others and plead my case for how I would like the Miami Dolphins to go forward into next season.

Please understand that despite the fact that I wish otherwise, I understand QB Tua Tagovailoa is still under contract not only in 2026, but in 2027 as well. The OUT is easier to accomplish in ’27, but let’s face facts, you’re paying Tua through 2026 whether he’s playing, or whether he’s playing, or whether he’s holding a clipboard for a young newly drafted QB. I understand why the talking heads say “Tua Tagovailoa will be the starting QB in 2026 because his cap hit is $56.4M and his dead cap hit is $99.2M. OK, so you know I’m aware of that, and I still stand firm in saying that doesn’t guarantee that Tua has to be the starting QB on Day 1 of the ’26 season, and for sure, not the entire ’26 season.

It happens in all sports, not just the NFL, when your team is paying a player tons of money, they want that player out there to try and get your money’s worth. Some teams though realize if that player isn’t really helping your team, and you have a better option, you can make it happen, and despite still paying that painful salary, you can sit that QB and play the QB of the future instead, and get the timeline started more quickly for your future QB. The Atlanta Falcons are doing just that right now with QB Kirk Cousins who’s cap hit is $40M. QB Michael Penix started the season, although starting QB Michael Penix is making on $5.2M. Of course now Michael Penix is injured and Qb Kirk Cousins is playing now, but the Falcons did what was best for the team, not for the talking heads. They benched the guy making the money to try and make things better, both for now, and for the future. To be fair, it didn’t work out as well as Atlanta hoped, but they stuck to their guns and stayed with the plan. The Penix led Falcons were 3-6 and the Cousins led Falcons are 0-1. Cousins will be the Qb going forward because QB Michael Penix had season ending knee surgery.

The point here is, it can be done, and now I’m going to plead my case as to why it should be done here for the Miami Dolphins in 2026. I know everyone here thinks I hate Tua, but mostly I’m just tired of everything being ABOUT Tua. Truth is, he’s not worth that. He’s about average for the most part, and he’s proven time and time again, that he simply is not good enough to carry this team if either the O-line isn’t near perfect, his receivers drop a pass, or we don’t rush for well over 100 yards, and the defense has to play superior football and not give up more than 20 points, because that’s what we’re scoring this season, 20.5 PPG.

Whether it’s on “X” (The App Formerly known as Twitter), or just reading our Miami Dolphins beat reporters, they lazily repeat the same thing over and over again that Tua is getting paid blah blah blah and therefore he has to be the starter blah blah blah and because Tua is the starter blah blah, we have to bring back the HC that he’s comfortable and succeeds with (Really???) in Mike McDaniel blah blah blah, and if you bring back those two, you have to bring back interim GM Champ Kelly who is soooooooooooo well respected in NFL circles (Really???) and makes the most sense blah blah blah. OK, that’s a heaping pile of horseshit if I ever saw one, and it’s some of the laziest thinking ever!

If I didn’t hate Tua before, if ALL of that happens next season, I will most definitely hate him, because man, he just AIN’T WORTH ALL OF THAT!!!! Think of it this way, there will be no GM search done this offseason. This SHOULD have been started as soon as GM Chris Grier was handed his walking papers. Champ Kelly was interim GM for 2 teams, 2 very bad teams, (Bears and Raiders) and as you see, he didn’t get the top job to keep. So, in what I view as a crucial point for this team, we’re going to allow Champ Kelly to conduct NFL Free Agency, and handle the 2026 NFL Draft for our team, mostly because Tua is getting paid $56.4M, Mike McDaniel brings out the best Tua (Does he???), and since we’re going with those 2 knuckleheads, and you can’t really saddle a GM worth a shit with ALL OF THAT, so let’s be lazy and fuck this team for another season!

You can’t make that make sense to me. CANNOT! So many sacrifices for all the wrong reasons. Find a qualified GM from a winning program, one who has seen what it takes to do things right to build a winning team, not a guy who was with 2 poor programs and did poorly in his own right. That’s lazy, and once again, sets this team back at least one more season if not more. Say we got “Executive X” from the Ravens, or the Chiefs, or the Steelers, or the Packers, you’d say to yourself, “Ok, this guy has come from a team with a pedigree, has seen how to build a team, was part of building that team, and has seen how the best are able to remain competitive year after year. For goodness sake, that’s what we all want here.

So do an extensive search on teams like I mentioned, then identify specific executives you want to speak to, and ask those clubs for permission to do so, and get yourself a list of 5-10 candidates that meet that criteria, and start conducting interviews. One thing here Mr. Ross, DON’T YOU DARE tell any of those said candidates they have to keep Tua as the starting QB or they have to keep HC Mike McDaniel because Tua feels comfy with him, no, you don’t say a damned word about any of those things. Let them tell you their vision of what they think should be done, and after you hear all of their thoughts, you’ll most likely see a lot of common things during all those thorough interviews and then you make your choice and never look back. In reality, Tua can be traded but you’d have to eat most of his cap money, and then in 2027, it will be even easier to let him go if you can’t do so in 2026. Tua is the past, you can clearly see the decline, and despite him not getting injured or concussed yet, you know it’s always right there, waiting to happen, and you also know that “if” it happens, that could mean he never takes the field again.

I also have to point out when lazy people say that Mike McDaniel gets the most out of Tua and that’s why he needs to stay sounds so completely ridiculous to me. Ok, we’re 4-7, Tua has 17 TD’s and 13 INT’s, and a low output of 2123 yards passing which works out to 193 yards passing per game, so add in that Tua has all of 38 yards rushing this season, he’s not even managing 200 yards per game for our team, and his TD:INT ratio sucks! This is what people call “Getting the most out him?” Could it actually be worse? I’ll gladly add in that last game, the overtime victory in Madrid Spain, not Brazil (LOL), Tua completed 3 passes in the 4th quarter, a 9 yard completion on a very short pass to who else but De’Von Achane and a screen pass to Achane for 7. Another screen pass to Achane later on went for 22, but anyone can throw a screen pass to De’Von Achane. Tua has been relegated to a “Game Manager”, which is fine for a backup QB or a young QB who’s not quite ready to put the team on his back, but not for a QB who will be earning $56.4M.

Not many good college games to watch this weekend.

    #22 Missouri at #8 Oklahoma 11am ABC

    7-3 Louisville at 7-3 SMU 11am ESPN2

    #15 USC at #7 Oregon 2:30pm CBS

TCU at #23 Houston 3pm FOX

7-3 Pitt at #16 Georgia Tech 6pm ESPN

Nebraska at Penn State 6pm NBC

#20 Tennessee at Florida 6pm ABC

    #11 BYU at 7-3 Cincinnati 7pm FOX

I would say 8-2 Western Kentucky at LSU 6:45pm on SEC Network but I think Western Kentucky’s QB Maverick McIvor may be out with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder.

  2. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Regardless of what they do in the draft in April, Tua will be the best QB on the team next season….

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Possibly, but that still doesn’t mean he has to play the whole season, or even half the season. If you draft a QB, much like the Giants did with Jaxson Dart, you get that QB ready and if/when he’s ready, you put him in to learn and see what he can do.

  3. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’ve been trying to convince my Viking friends that they need to trade for Tua because JJ McCarthy is struggling and probably needs another year. None of them want Tua. Lol

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

I fail to understand the hatred for Tua by so many here. He still gives Miami the best chance to win as our starter IMHO!

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right, win maybe a couple of more games this season until it comes down to needing a victory against a good team and he’ll come up small as he always does. We’ll need the win either against TB or NE, and Tua will make sure to choke like always does in those situations

  4. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Not sure what you have against Kelly, there is so much unknown about him. Now, if they intend to go into next season with MM and Tua, I think Kelly should remain as our GM and see how things unfold.

If they clean house (My Preference), then I can see bringing in everything new.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I explained what I have against him. He’s from 2 failed teams and didn’t even get the permanent gig with either of them. Do our due diligence and find 5-10 candidates, and interview Kelly against those, and if he’s the guy (I doubt it!), then at least you did your job. Keeping him is as lazy as fuck Markey. Didn’t you yourself come up with a list? You probably did that in 5 minutes. I would think the executives we have in place could assemble a strong list of candidates to interview. Why just hand a guy a job? It’s unbelievable Markey. Is that how they do it at your company?

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

MikeE., if Ross wanted to do it right, he would find a GM who could trade Tua as soon as possible, even if for just peanuts.

Yeah, Tua has a 99.2m dead cap hit but that is only if he is released. If he is traded, he only has a 45.2m dead cap hit (pre 6/1). All that would hit in 2026 and still clear 11.2m in 2026 cap.

Even better, it would clear all of his 2027 cap hit of 53.4m putting our 2027 available cap over 110m.

This is the way to go. Why wait a year? Sign a cheap vet and draft a QB in the middle rounds. Roll with the vet, Ewers and rookie in 2026. Fill holes and add depth with the 2026 draft. Then target a QB in the top of the 2027 draft if Ewers or the one you drafted in 2026 don’t have “it”.

There are QB needy teams in 2026 who will have plenty of cap for Tua’s contract and the 2026 QB class is not looking good for them.

  6. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Markey,

Probably because he’s ranked as around the 20th best QB in the NFL. Oh, and he threw his teammates under the bus several times. Oh, he threw his coach under the bus. Oh, he also threw the fans under the bus all in an attempt not to take responsibility for his own shitty play. Is that enough?

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

If it were how he has been since being our QB, then I can understand, but he is having a bad season (Not all can be blamed on him), and he has been better than average overall throughout his career, and he is only 27 years old. He also has been without his two best O-linemen since week 1 and his best WR since week 4.

Yes, he has made some mistakes in how he has handled some things this year, and some of it has been taken out of context in one event. But he has a 41-31 overall record and is 3rd on the all-time list of Dolphins starting QBs since he has been here the last 5 years.

I don’t get the hatred of Tua more so than just hating his season so far.

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

IF they don’t blow it all up at the end of the year, AND

If Weaver is offered a head coaching position, the Dolphins will then be rewarded with third-round compensatory picks in 2026 and 2027. Based on previous trades made, that would give Miami four third-round selections this coming April. Two years of completion with a team are necessary to earn comp picks, so if either the Saints or Bears had given Weaver the HC job last season, the Dolphins would not be awarded draft picks.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Do you get a comp pick the same year you lose a coach? You don’t when you lose a player in free agency, you get it the next year.

Just wondering because losing a coach isn’t factored in any formula like losing a player in free agency. You get the 3rd round comp pick for losing a coach no matter what you in free agency.

I just didn’t know if you get it that same year or not.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

From the way the article that I took this from was written, we will get a 3rd round the same year they leave and a 3rd round the year after.

Two third round picks in all. (just because he’s black)

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

One team who comes to mind about trading for Tua, the Rams.

Depending on what the Rams do in the post season and his health (bad back), Matthew Stafford could decide to retire at age 38 next year.

I don’t think the Rams think their future at QB is in Stetson Bennett.

With a pre 6/1 retirement of Matthew Stafford, the Rams will have about 95m in available cap space if the cap is around 300m next year. If Stafford were to do what Armstead did and announce his retirement for post 6/1, the Rams would have over 115m in available cap.

If current interim GM Kelly doesn’t have this kind of vision, then he is not the guy for the job.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Markey – Because I SEE what Tua is. Even at his best in 2023, and I have outlined this before, he came up small in games at the end of that season culminating in us handing over the division to the Bills and having to play the Chiefs in KC in frigid temps. He choked in the Cowboys game needing 5 FG’s from Sanders, 3 of them beyond 50. Got blowed up against the Ravens, never gave them a chance. Choked against the Bills again at our house. I know, this guy was out, that guy was out, blah blah blah. That was at Tua’s pinnacle, and he showed he didn’t have enough against the big boys. Last season he got hurt again and missed time, the nitwits that run this team weren’t prepared for that, which is completely absurd. This year, 2 seasons removed from his “pinnacle” he’s getting worse. So why are we running this shitshow back again?

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBMike – Get on the horn with the Rams and make it happen! LOL

  11. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

I can’t believe so many of you are giving up on the 3rd-best QB in Dolphins history, who has only been here for 5 years. When we have had issues at that position for so many years before Tus was drafted!

No, he is not perfect, but he sure is not the main problem we have as a team. In fact, he is so far down the list of the problems we have as a team, starting with the HC, IMHO.

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Markey,

You put more emphasis on wins as a QB stat than I do. I am changing my mind on it since the NFL has done everything in their power to elevate QBs’ impact on the game. It’s ridiculous how much impact one single player has on the game now.

And, if you really believe the QB gets the credit for a win, then why do you put such blame on the OL for wins and losses and how he performs? Isn’t he the one most responsible for winning….so isn’t he the most responsible for losing too?

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tua Tagovailoa’s career record against teams with winning records is 7 wins and 14 losses. He has also shown a specific record of 6-14 against winning teams since 2022, with 31 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in those games.

    • Overall Career: 7-14
    • Since 2022: 6-14
    • Recent Performance (15 games): 2-13

Markey – Since 2022, Tua is 6-14. The last 15 games against winning teams

2-13. That’s a freaking joke! Recent record is much more applicable than his overall record, but of course you can’t admit that, because then you’d KNOW you’re dead wrong on this!

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Tua, with his limitations, needs more protection than the average QB. So our O-Line is very critical for him to play with comfort and the fact that we have been without two of our best O-linemen since week 1 has had a major effect on Tua’s play.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stop, stop, stop! Patrick Paul and Aaron Brewer are our 2 best OL. Austin Jackson is OK at best, and we have no idea what RG James Daniels can do after his achilles and now pec injuries. Borom has been playing well enough, it’s Grier’s TRADE UP turnstile Jonah Savaiinaea that’s the biggest problem.

      • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Patrick Paul and Aaron Brewer are good, but I do not agree that they are better than Jackson and Daniels, and for sure, the current starters at RG and RT are not better than our starters.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Markey – You can’t on the one hand blame everything on the HC and not your beloved GM or beloved QB, and then tell me we have to bring back Mike McDaniel next season, along with interim GM Champ Kelly. That makes no sense whatsoever. Everything is Mike McDaniels fault, so he needs to go, and Tua will have to either learn a new system, or ride the bench!

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

      Mike:

We have hashed this over too many times, and I will continue to be consistent with my opinion. If Tua is coming back next season, then so should MM. I do not think MM is a good HC, but what matters is that the word is the Owner does like MM, so it is what it is!

I don’t want to hamper a new GM with MM, and I am sure that would turn quite a few of the better GMs away from Miami.

And besides everything else, Tua is still the best option at QB for Miami until we actually find someone better. The only way we can find that out is to bring in legitimate competition and may the best man win.

  15. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Tua does NOT need more protection than other QBs. Actually, MM designed the offense to allow Tua to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible. He’s not meant to sit in the pocket and hold the ball. It is a quick timing offense. Once his back foot hits the ground in his drop back, and the ball should be out. If Tua is running the offense efficiently, his OL has to hold their blocks shorter than most QBs. Technically. Lol

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

It’s about Tua’s comfort level, and he is not comfortable with the right side of his line and the rookie on the left side and that has been why Tua’s performance has dipped. The evidence is how he has played so far without his two starters.

  16. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

    Mike,

I agree with everything in your article.

Hopefully BBM can arrange a trade with the Rams to get rid of the Albatross disguised as a QB.

  17. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Right Guard: Cole Strange and Right Tackle: Larry Borom are not better than Austin Jackson and James Daniels. We will soon get both starters back, and I can assure you that Tua’s performance will improve.

  18. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Ewers is not even better than Zach Wilson

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Ewers is a developmental QB for next season to take a look at in training camp.

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Let’s see what he has the remainder of the season. We already know what we have in Tua, and it isn’t pretty at this point.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

How do you know? Because this coaching staff hasn’t played him or elevated him to the permanent #2? Excuse me for not trusting anything this coaching staff does when it comes to personnel utilization.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Markey – You’re talking about the James Daniels who played for the Bears and Steelers from 2018-2024. He played 3 snaps for us, and we have no idea what he can do now. That’s a fact. Jackson will also be returning from an injury so his performance is unknown as well. That’s a fact. Tua has the hip injury and he looks like a different player. These guys are not video games, they’re human, and when they’re compromised, they aren’t the same. You HOPE Daniels and Jackson are better, but you have no idea, and those are facts.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

James Daniels is viewed as an elite, versatile, and technically sound offensive lineman, but his reputation has been impacted by recurring, significant injuries. When healthy, he is considered a premier pass protector and highly effective in zone-blocking schemes.

      Strengths and overall performance

      • Elite athleticism: He is an athletic and agile interior lineman with great burst off the snap, excelling at blocking in space and reaching the second level.
      • Premier pass protection: Daniels has been praised for his pass-blocking efficiency throughout his career. Between 2018 and March 2025, no lineman with over 3,000 snaps allowed fewer than his six sacks.
      • Versatility: Daniels has experience playing both guard and center and can thrive in multiple schemes, making him a valuable asset to an offensive line.
      • High football IQ: He is known for his advanced understanding of blocking concepts and protections, and he effectively picks up blitzes.

      Weaknesses and recent injury history

      • Lack of power: Daniels’ average play strength and lack of brute power can make him vulnerable to bull rushes from stronger defensive linemen.
      • Recurring injuries: The biggest knock on Daniels’ reputation is his inability to stay on the field.
        • 2020: Missed 11 games with a torn pectoral muscle.
        • 2024: Tore his Achilles while playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
        • 2025: Signed with the Miami Dolphins and suffered a season-ending pectoral injury in Week 1.
      • Question marks moving forward: Due to his recent injuries, his effectiveness and durability moving forward are legitimate concerns for his teams and analysts.

      Career trajectory

Despite his injuries, Daniels is a highly respected player when he is on the field. Before his torn Achilles in 2024, Pro Football Focus graded him as the second-best guard in the NFL. Following that season, he was still viewed as a massive upgrade for the Dolphins in free agency, demonstrating his high standing around the league. His future is now highly dependent on his ability to recover from his latest injury.

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Markey, I don’t think it’s hate. At least, it’s not for me. It’s realization on where this organization needs to go. Tua has played well enough. There are various reasons this team didn’t get it done over the last 3 years and a good portion of that is not on Tua. With Tua’s concussion, hip and ankle injury history, his trajectory is pointing down. Sometimes I feel like we have an egg playing QB and am just waiting for it to crack.

This team is barely competitive this year and will be again next year. The team started a reset and, for the better, the team needs to do a total reset and move on from Tua they may be able to get something for him.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

The only way we should move on from Tua is if we find someone better. I don’t see an option next year in the draft or FA.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Preach it Bookman! It definitely ain’t pretty, but we have to let Tua play through until this magical run disappears. Then maybe reality will slap this organization into giving Ewers some games to play

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Markey – Injuries sure are part of the game, but we can’t ignore them. They’re real, and players aren’t always the same when they come back from their injuries. That’s why to me you saying Daniels and Jackson are the 2 best OL is about the same to me as you touting Tua’s 42-31 record. He’s not that guy anymore, he’s been awful this season, and he wasn’t that good last season either, especially against winning teams where he’s 2-13 in his last 15 games against winning teams. He’s getting worse and worse.

  23. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Markey,

I think Tua is a wuss who got paid and decided to prioritize his own health and future over the team’s success. I think he knows he’s damaged goods, and he’s simply trying to keep getting checks without doing anymore damage to his body.

He crumples like a toddler whenever pressure gets close. He can’t move well enough to avoid any sort of pressure. Or, he chooses not to so he won’t get hit. I think he and everybody else in the NFL knows he’s on the way down.

He had one really good year where the whole offense performed and the other 5 were average for an NFL QB. He can’t even throw 30 TDs in his best year. That’s less than 2 TDs a game, and he’s never done it. Only 2 years thus far where he even threw 20+ TDS. Don’t give me passer rating. It doesn’t translate to wins. TDs do.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

I can’t blame Tua for being uncomfortable with our O-Line situation, that is why I am preaching, let’s see how he plays when he gets his two starting o-linemen he has been without since week 1!

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Tus is 42-32 11th best since he was drafted! Nuff said!

  24. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

How many years did we go through after Marino retired before we finally found a winning QB like Tua? Twenty years passed between Dan Marino’s retirement in March 2000 and the Miami Dolphins drafting Tua Tagovailoa in April 2020.

I don’t think I have 20 more years on this earth! So I am not looking to replace Tua, who is 27 years old, unless someone legitimately beats him out!

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

I have no problem with someone legitimately beating Tua out because he is an above-average QB when things are right in Miami.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tua is just one of the many QB failures over the last 25 years. It’s best to realize failures early and move on from them. I knew it in 2024 and begged for them not to give him the big contract but they blew it. Now it’s time to move on and try again until you get it right, because Tua AIN’T IT

      • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

When we find someone better than Tua and have them compete, and he beats Tua out, is when I say move on, not before!!!

  25. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

My favorite point of the day so far is:

‘Tua doesn’t suck, he’s playing bad because he is missing a couple of olinemen. The proof of this is that his play sucks and he is missing two olinemen.’ LMAO

  26. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    MikeE/Bookman:

I called the Rams GM, Les Snead. He put me on hold. They obviously have a multi-phone system as Sean McVay accidentally picked up while I was holding. He didn’t even know who he was talking to and just went on rambling about the foot injury he suffered in week 2 while calling a timeout in the game against the Titans. I was finally able to get a word in and asked him about Tua. He said, “Don’t spit on me!” and hung up.

I had to call Les back and now I am on hold again. What an armchair GM has to go through… SMH

  27. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Markey, we can only take what others write about players only so far.

    Guess who this is about:

    • Massive frame with rare thickness through his core and limbs creates an imposing presence that smaller defenders struggle to navigate around or through
    • Shows impressive patience and timing with his punch, delivering jolting strikes that consistently snap defenders’ heads back and halt momentum
    • Demonstrates natural power to create movement on down blocks, particularly effective when working in tandem on double teams to clear rushing lanes
    • Exceptional spatial awareness when uncovered, consistently identifying and picking up stunts while maintaining gap integrity

  28. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I actually agree that we might as well run it back next year since it appears we’re stuck with Tua anyway.

My focus on the 2026 draft would be trenches, trenches, trenches. I actually said all this prior to this year’s draft. We’ve got good young skill players, build both lines with this year and next year’s draft with the idea that we can truly start working towards competing in 2027.

If Tua turns it around next year, which I’d bet the farm against, then great. If not, we’ve got the team in place and we work towards getting a replacement at QB.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ok, so you’re just handing over the reins willingly to Champ Kelly to handle all player/personnel transactions including Free Agency, trades and the 2026 NFL Draft? You trust him why? Waste another season with McDaniel as HC? No comprendo friendo

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We’re kinda f^cked no matter what we do. We’re in this transitional 2026 year where our best option at QB is going to be Tua and we’re stuck with him.

I think that more than anything is the reason we’re giving McD another year. If you keep Tua as your starter it makes zero sense to let go of McD and bring in a coach who is stuck with a QB they didn’t pick to start their tenure. That limits your options at HC, so you keep McD another year.

It’s a big clusterf^ck we can’t extricate ourselves from fully until 2027. So run it back again in 2026 and if it continues to suck, you then can clean out the whole house for 2027-new GM, new HC, new QB.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess I didn’t answer the question you asked. I think as long as we don’t get cute and just stay with our picks and go with meat and potatoes guys, there are a lot of guys who can do that. Same thing in FA, just fill spots with young guys. And in that regard, yes I can trust Champ to do that for one offseason.

  29. Randy's avatar Randy says:

If we are, indeed, stuck with Tua at least through 2026, then I hope he turns it around and balls out! If they start running more and having him play more of a play action sort of game, I think he could be better. It’s not a coincidence that our offense is better with him throwing less.

  30. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The only way we should move on from Tua is if we find someone better. I don’t see an option next year in the draft or FA.

    ———–

100%, I don’t see one either outside of Mendoza.

Thing is that this team will be mediocre with a chance at a low WC spot again next year anyway. They will have to fill roster spots with rookies and bargain basement free agents with the minimal cap space they will have.

It’s time to blow it up with a new GM, HC and QB even if it takes 2 years to draft said QB.

  31. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Cav, BBM keeps flip flopping. Right now, I am in blow it up mode. The next week or so Markey or someone may say something that will flip a switch and put me in “run it back” mode. lol

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I can honestly see both arguments.

I’d be perfectly fine if they fired McD, sat Tua, hired a new GM and HC with the idea they can build however they want with the knowledge Tua would be a cap anchor for a year. I don’t think you guys are wrong in wanting to blow it up now. I just think it’s kinda six one way, half a dozen the other.

We’re screwed for 2026. I just think the GM and HC job looks a little more attractive in 2027 if they can come in with a clean slate and a pretty put together team. And I really want to get the right guys in there.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m a bit concerned trying to get those guys now might limit our options.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Thought the same a month ago, but rookies and others are starting to ball, so no blow it up for me, we’ve done that slowly the past couple of years

Look at the roster, I see 39 guys worth keeping and a couple of vets Chubb and Minkah that could be worth keeping based on what the direction of the team is

With the low cap space I’d cut ties with these 2 vets to save cap, as we’re at least 2 yrs away

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

His lone attempt this season from that far out was a 57-yarder against the Los Angeles Chargers that he missed in the second quarter. The Dolphins would go on to lose the game by two.

This phin phinatic doesn’t mention how This year and last have seen a large uptake in 50+ yard FGs due to teams being allowed to massage the balls during the week

Kong – I understand the 2026 season is somewhat a potential bad season, but it’s all in what you’re trying to accomplish. To me, if we were able to hire a new GM from a solid NFL organization and it seemed like he had the right ideas on how to go forward with the team and a strong direction, I feel like the season wouldn’t necessarily be lost as much as it would be if left in the hands of Champ Kelly with what team identity and for what system and what QB? Will he be drafting for Tua, putting more importance on a RT than say a CB or S or DE/OLB? What defense is he drafting for? Will it be for Weaver? Will any offensive player whether a TE or WR be for Mike McDaniels offense? These are things that I really hate about leaving those guys in charge of next season is that it can set you back another few years if you blow it up the following season and now you have young players that may or may not fit what you are going to change over to next season. I feel like getting a head start on that is paramount. Tua is clearly not part of the future whether he starts every game next season or not. To bring back Mike just to be Tua’s cheerleader is a waste of time, they’re not successful together anyway. Get me?

  42. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I genuinely think this decision on 2026 was made when Grier was fired and McD kept on.

Rock makes a very good point about Denver. They were in the exact same boat.

They chose to just eat it a year early, bring in Payton or Peyton and suck for a couple of years…and that is what happened. It took Payton or Peyton a couple of years to clean house and in year 3 they are looking pretty good. But that first year they were really stuck with Wilson and it delayed their process.

There was even talk about firing Peyton or Payton that first year because it looked so bad. They were doing things like giving up 70 points, a lot of friction between QB and HC, etc. Year 2, Peyton or Payton was really able to start building the team he wanted.

The way I see it, we’re stuck with Tua like Denver was stuck with Wilson. It’s a good argument that it worked for Denver the way they did it. Doing it that way may work for us too…if we can get the right guy to take the job. I’m just not sure we can entice a top guy to do that.

So again, I see the argument for cleaning house now and just accepting how bad 2026 could be as a result. And if you told me, we could get the right guys at HC and GM, I’m all in. I’m just not convinced you can get a Payton or Peyton to take the job in 2026. Extrapolate the same argument for GM.

Our RB position is just fine for now. All 3 of our RBs are in their early 20s. We need to address the o-line, D line, CB, Safety, WR, TE, and, most of all, more young talent in 2026.

That’s logical, but MM isn’t Payton. Payton was gonna turn that organization around regardless of how the Wilson situation worked out. He’s an elite coach.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

MM is toast after next year; I agree he’s certainly no payton.

The absolute, be all end all, most important thing for me is to make sure we get the right guys to run this. I don’t care if it takes an extra year, or two extra years, just get the right guys. If we can do that at the end of this season, do it. But don’t force a hire in 2026 just to be rid of McD.

What really makes all these ‘debates’ between fans so dumb is that we aren’t privy to what happens behind the scene in myriad ways. There is all sorts of stuff that could be impacting these choices.

Maybe the Dolphins have already scouted for a GM hire and didn’t like the options. Maybe there is talk in back channels that indicate they’d do better to hire after getting rid of Tua. Or maybe there is a guy they really like that isn’t available till 2027. We just don’t know. I can’t help but laugh (good naturedly) at people that are so sure of their opinions on this stuff.

      • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Or maybe the owner has made up his mind on MM and will keep him around in 2026, like it’s being reported.

So let’s just say that next year the Dolphins under MM is a top team in 2026, make the playoffs, and make a run in the playoffs, would it have been worth it to have waited another year? I think so.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Maybe Gruden has told Ross in private he’ll take the job in 2027 if he can’t get a prime college position in 2026. Since 2026 is screwed anyway, maybe it’s worth waiting and seeing.

Maybe Ross is just such an idiot, he’s bound and determined to do it wrong no matter the situation, so yet another half-ass reset. That could be true too. LOL

He hasn’t trained with Nick Hicks (according to Hicks himself) for two seasons, and Hicks was the one who MADE ’22 and ’23 Tua as far as strength, awareness, and resilience.

Lol

    ————-

    This is 100% correct.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Now don’t get me wrong, Randy… that’s how it’s supposed to work. However, if there’s elite coverage going on, Tua gets in trouble when having to look for extra reads, being the ball is supposed to be out in 2.2 seconds.

If the O-Line sucks at pass-protection in that case, that’s going to cause Tua to either get sacked, to throw an INT, or throw the ball away.

We need pass-protection, even if the ball is to be out in 2.2 seconds. It’s insane to think 2.2 seconds solves all pass-pro problems.

I don’t know how any rational person can have watched Tua play this year and blame the OL for his performance. That’s simply not true. I’ve watched him make many, many bad plays. Actually, if anything, he’s making his OL look bad. It’s as simple as that. The OL ain’t great, but it ain’t all their fault either. They aren’t holding Tua back….he’s doing that almost all by himself.

That said, the OL needs to keep improving too. I hope we continue to run the ball with some purpose. I don’t know why in the hell it took MM this long to utilize a 6th OL. I get that it decreases your receiving targets but so what? Nobody cares when you’re running it down their throat!

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

      I disagree!

It doesn’t matter when you have to play with the entire right side of your o-line missing both starters and need to rely on backups, along with having a rookie who has no business being on the left side and playing poorly at a position he has never played before.

Tua is uncomfortable as he should be, and that has affected his play. Let’s see how things work when he gets his legitimate starters back!

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

“I don’t know why in the hell it took MM this long to utilize a 6th OL. I get that it decreases your receiving targets but so what?”

He lost Tyreek Hill to a season-ending injury, which is why he has made adjustments. I actually think it’s for the better because now he has to rely on the running game first. Something he should have been doing since becoming head coach! Unfortunately he still is not utilizing all of our very good RBs and is abusing the smallest of the three RBs by running him too much!

  59. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

The running games open up everything, including “Play Action.” It also helps control the clock, and it wears down opposing defenses while keeping our Defense off the field, so when they do get on the field, they are fresh and in attack mode more often.

I think this team is finally on the right track, and now that they are focusing on getting younger, the Dolphins will soon be playing ball like we all have been hoping for! In fact, since Tyreek’s injury, that is exactly what’s been happening!

That is why we are winning more games (3 out of last 4).

  60. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I see a trend both here and on “X’ that Tua fans now instead of posting Tua’s stats this year, post his career stats. It’s such a pointless exercise, you can clearly see the guy is getting worse. If the HC of your team takes the ball out of the QB’s hands and doesn’t want him to have it, you’re done. We saw it happen last week, against the Commanders. Yes, the same Commanders who lost 4 straight games by 20 + points. Tua’s cheerleader MM took the ball out of his hands. That tells you everything you need to know. You can’t watch him play now and think to yourself we could beat the Bills in Buffalo, the Chiefs in KC, the Ravens in Baltimore or the Broncos in Denver with Tua as our QB in a playoff game. Not unless you’re completely delusional.

  61. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

You can’t watch him play now and think to yourself we could beat the Bills in Buffalo, the Chiefs in KC, the Ravens in Baltimore or the Broncos in Denver

The Bills in Buffalo are 6-1at home this year, the Chiefs in KC are 4-1 at home. The Broncos in Denver are 6-0 at home, It’s only the Ravens in Baltimore who have a losing home record, but they had been without Lamar and lost 2 home games in his absence. The point there are not too many teams that will beat these top teams on their home field.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Yes, Tua’s career stats do matter when evaluating his OVERALL play, especially when he is playing poorly. There must be a reason why he is not playing up to his level, and the fact that he has been without two of his starting linemen and a struggling rookie playing at LG (a position he has never played before) might be the reason he is struggling.

It’s always someone else’s fault when it comes to Tua. It’s the HC, the O-line, asteroid activity in the solar system, the receivers, everything but the guy himself, who in reality, is the one that just can’t get it done unless everything is perfect for him.

Time to move on from that sad show

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

When you have a QB who, when healthy and has proper protection, is a top NFL QB and consistent winner, moving on from him requires you to have a better player available because it’s extremely hard to find a starting QB in the NFL.

So to dismiss a QB who has, for the most part, played above average for your team when there is no better option out there is just stupid!

If Ewers is worth his weight, he will prove it when he gets his chance (most likely next season), but until he or any other QB can legitimately take Tua’s job from him, we need to stick with the QB that gives us the best chance to win, and that is Tua by leaps and bounds.

MM has a job he’s trying to save, and the fact that he is sticking with Tua answers your question as to why Ewers is not playing and, in fact, is not even the backup QB.

Tua Tagovailoa played in 11 games during the 2024 season. He missed six games due to injury.

This year, he has played without his entire right side O-line starters and a struggling rookie on the left side since week 1

That is why the Dolphins have lost more games than they would have if they were healthy…..fact!

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Its not really fact. There is no way to prove that.

The Dolphins have lost more games than they have won because they scored less than the opponents. Now thats a fact. 😂

      • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Yes, you score less when you lose your best offensive weapon (Tyreek Hill ) and your entire right side of your offensive line since week, 1

  71. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

I still feel the win vs Buffalo (Blowout) is a sign that MM might have made the changes needed to be a true contender. Along with losing Tyreek, which has forced him to play to the strength of our offense (the running game), is proof that MM is changing for the better.

Teams that run the ball well and play good defense tend to go far in the playoffs.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

That is why I have second thoughts about getting rid of MM as long as he sticks to this new style of play.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

MM is slow to adjust in-game, can’t call plays in a timely manner, and some of his routes are retarded (one of those caused the Bills loss)

His lack of ability to fix those issues is why he must go

  72. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I am on board that Tyreek going down is/was beneficial to this offense. No more forcing the issue and running a more run heavy scheme. I actually said it to my wife when it happened. Although she had no idea what I was talking about. Lol

  73. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Markey,

I was calling for MM to put a 6th OL in for years. It’s a fairly simple thing to do, and if you’re struggling to control the LOS it can swing the pendulum back. It also kind of forces you to call more running plays.

It had nothing to do with Hill. MM should’ve been doing this years ago. He wasn’t forced to do it. It was a choice.

  74. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The main thing that drove our 2023 production was our running game. Period. End of discussion. Take away the production of our running game that season, and you got squat.

Is it strange that this offense now looks “better” again when we focus on the running game? It’s a basic football tenet. Established the run. It makes everything else happen.

  75. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Markey,

What do you think opened up those quick, intermediate routes that Hill was cutting into to make all those catches? It was the running game.

  76. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

We’ll have to wait and see how the season unfolds, and won’t really know until after the season on MM’s fate, IMHO. Not that I wouldn’t mind if he were fired, but I just don’t want the next HC and GM to be forced to deal with Tua.

So tired of hearing the injury excuse. They are excuses, nothing more, they can not be used to extrapolate “what if facts” The 49ers are one of the most injured teams every year and look how they fair. They are superior in talent aquisition and coaching, something we lack IMO.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Injuries matter! Most teams that lose a key player fall off drastically. You need to look no further than the Ravens or Bengals after they lost their QBs to injuries. The 49ers are the exception to the rule; much love for them.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

The Dolphins have a bunch of players on injured reserve, but three likely will have a greater impact than the others: James Daniels, Darren Waller and Austin Jackson.

They are all expected starters, and Daniels and Jackson account for the entire starting right side of the offensive line. Both players were hurt in Week 1, and while Larry Borom and Cole Strange have done their best, they’ve mostly been a below league-average duo.

Jackson’s 21-day practice window was opened before the team’s game against the Commanders, so he should be ready to go next week against the Saints. We haven’t gotten a clear update on Daniels yet, but head coach Mike McDaniel seemed optimistic the team would return a bunch of players soon

  79. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – I believe it was the “cheat motion” that gave our offense the biggest advantage in 2023. We haven’t seen our receivers that open since then. Eventually they adjusted with the 2 deep, but that cheat motion made it so easy for Tua, Hill and Waddle were just blowing guy defenders most of the season

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    M13,

I don’t know how any rational person can have watched Tua play this year and blame the OL for his performance. That’s simply not true…

    ————

I’m NOT blaming the O-Line for Tua’s performance this year. I did, however, make a statement that Tua gets in trouble in the event his primary read is covered by excellent coverage and the O-Line whiffs.

Why? He no longer has the ability to scramble into a new throwing lane, his hip is shot (can’t put juice into his throws as he had in ’22 and ’23), and he’s now claiming he’s too short to see over the O-Line. That, and he hasn’t trained with Nick Hicks in two years.

Tua is a liability at this point. I think (at least on this blog) I’m the first to claim he’s now “damaged goods” while others are claiming he just sucks.

Think about it… Tua has NEVER had a legit, pass-protecting O-Line… yet he put up numbers in ’22 and ’23. He’s regressed because he’s damaged, not because of the O-Line.

Why do you think I’m blaming the O-Line when I’m being very clear that he’s damaged?

  81. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And as I stated to Markeyh last evening, do NOT go by Tua’s career numbers. Look at the precipitous drop in his production over the last two seasons (minus last year’s completion % as a result of ‘dink-n-dunk’ all day).

I don’t care if he won the Super Bowl single-handedly in ’23, he’s fallen off a cliff and is no longer the QB he once had been.

  82. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

BBM thinks if Tua is that good then it shouldn’t matter if MM stays or goes. Saying MM should stay because of Tua makes no sense unless you think Tua can’t be that good under anyone else.

You fired the GM, now fire the HC at the end of the season. Hire a new GM and a new HC. If you can’t trade Tua, then he competes starting job with whoever the new GM brings in the QB room. If Tua is as good as some say then there should be no problem.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

      I can deal with that….

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I disagree regarding Capri McD… Tua’s a system QB more than ever at this point in his career and nobody is going to get the best out of him other than Capri McD… or maybe Kyle Shanahan. Try to trade him to the 49ers.

THAT being stated, I don’t want Capri McD back, plain and simple.

It’s time to reset our system, not hold onto it for another season.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Our Offensive system, that is. I’d be absolutely fine in promoting Anthony Weaver to HC to keep our Defense intact.

  83. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And think about this… if we retain Capri McD as our HC, is there really going to be a fair competition at QB… even if we draft a QB in the 1st round? The answer is NO… Tua and Capri McD are attached at the hip.

PLUS, it will take some time for even a 1st round QB to get the Capri McD Offensive system down pat. It would be a redshirt year for a rook 1st round QB if we retain Capri McD.

  84. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Miss the playoffs (which we WILL once this season is finally over) for the second consecutive season under Capri McD & Tua?

I’m sorry, but that would mandate Capri McD’s firing at season’s end. I can’t see it any other way.

I don’t CARE if Capri McD is the best HC for Tua and his $55M+ salary next season (which I do find to be TRUE), do what the Falcons did with Kirk Cousins this season.

  85. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

“I’d be absolutely fine in promoting Anthony Weaver to HC to keep our Defense intact.

PLUS, it will take some time for even a 1st round QB to get the Capri McD Offensive system down pat.

    ——-

Exactly, waiting a year by keeping MM just because of MM’s system makes no sense going forward. Why should we delay the inevitable another year. Get a new HC and get their system in place.

  87. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

That’s why I said a few days ago that if you’re a quarterback or a head coach who can only work with one specific quarterback or head coach, it’s a weakness. Turnover is inevitable in the NFL. What good is a guy who can only work with one other guy? That’s just crazy.

  88. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

I hate to break it to the NFL, but I see guys still moving forward at the snap every week. It’s still happening but maybe not as egregious. I think the NFL is actually okay with it because it helps offenses. I do think that made a difference. It’s a way for small fast, quick WRs to avoid getting hit or knocked off their routes too. It’s just harder to hit a guy who’s moving.

That said, I still think it was more about how defenses had to play us because of our running game. We averaged over 5 yards a carry. We scored almost 30 TDs. When the heck has this team ever done that? Our rushing attack that year was fantastic.

    —————

At this point in time, BBM and I both want Spags as our next HC. Spags would check your boxes, Markeyh.

And if we can’t land Spags, I’m very good with Anthony Weaver being our next HC.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Steve Ross seems to be obsessed with ‘the next big thing’ as far as a HC, so perhaps he doesn’t want to make Spags our HC being he’ll be 66 years old in December.

Anthony Weaver seems to fit the bill for Ross.

  90. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I want to talk about this year’s Texans’ (#1 overall) Defense… WOW! Thursday night’s victory over the Offensive juggernaut Bills and Josh Allen was absolutely… AWESOME to behold.

I’ve not seen a Defense like that since some of the Ravens’ historic Defenses.

So despite their record and without the injured CJ Stroud, they can win any game within reason. Yes, Defense (can) wins championships.

Young DeMeco Ryans is quite the success in Houston. All they need now is for CJ Stroud to get back into form.

Why do I mention this? Because we don’t necessarily NEED an Offensive-minded HC to win. Anthony Weaver could very well be the answer as our new HC… granted he can find a legit OC to run a stellar Offense.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    2. Belicheat* is floundering at North Carolina, and I hear a return to the NFL isn’t out of the question in order to preserve his legacy.
    3. Chucky Gruden is (rightfully or wrongfully) a polarizing figure. Not sure Steve Ross wants to bring in such a polarizing figure as HC after all Ross has been through with negative PR.
