Miami Dolphins hire new GM Jon-Eric Sullivan

Like a stairway to heaven, the Miami Dolphins have been taking all the right steps to get back to legitimacy. Firing former GM Chris Grier was STEP 1. Sitting QB Tua Tagovailoa was STEP 2. Finally firing Head Coach Mike McDaniel was STEP 3. Hiring GM Jon-Eric Sullivan was STEP 4. The next step hopefully complete the cycle in a positive way. The most important thing the Miami Dolphins did was hire what seems like a truly competent man to run the Organization. He has the requisite scouting background and was responsible for building the roster in Green Bay, and he had done well there in that capacity. Now, there is one man who is above all others, and he will have the final say on all things involving the team as far as players and personnel.

Head Coach John Harbaugh is not coming here. Ross is a pretty malleable guy, especially when it comes to getting what he wants, but it appears that John Harbaugh truly does want the keys to the kingdom and all its riches, and I don’t believe Ross will accommodate that. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any excellent candidates for the Miami Dolphins to hire. There’s a Head Coach not named John Harbaugh that has nearly an identical record as Head Coach in the NFL.

John Harbaugh 180-113. .614 Playoffs 13-11

Mike McCarthy 174-112 .608 Playoffs 11-11

Uncanny that over a span of 18 years, that these two coaches are so close in their records, for different teams in different conferences, Harbaugh all 18 with the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC, and McCarthy with 13 years with the Green Bay Packers and then 5 with the Dallas Cowboys, all in the NFC. I’m not advocating for the hiring of Mike McCarthy, but should we be looking for a Head Coach with a resume quite even with Jim Harbaugh’s, he exists. I know we have struck out with hiring first time Head Coaches, from Nick Saban to Cam Cameron to Tony Sparano to Joe Philbin to Adam Gase to Brian Flores and finally to Mike McDaniel. Just like some of the QB’s in the NFL, a lot of it is timing. Look at Baker Mayfield, and Sam Darnold. Both players flourishing after failing in their first NFL contracts, and the same goes for Coaches. I think it’s possible that both Brian Flores and Mike McDaniel can succeed for their next teams, they just have to be the right fit for that organization. If Tua stayed healthy and competitive, Mike McDaniel might still be here.

I’m 100% not against hiring another first time Head Coach. There’s been a lot of discussion over GB DC Jeff Hafley. The LA Rams DC is a household name in Miami, Chris Shula. Former Miami Dolphins DC Anthony Campanile is a hot name right now too. I have to say I loved that guy’s attitude and fire while he was here. If you watched last night’s game, Indiana’s Head Coach Curt Cignetti might garner some interest, although I have no idea whether he would want to enter the NFL ranks. The point is, there are options out there, and all is not lost if we don’t get John Harbaugh, who no doubt is an excellent candidate. Most of all, I trust that we have the right man in place to make that most important decision, and once again I stress that it will be HIS decision, and that decision will reflect directly on him, no one else. Full accountability and responsibility. The right way! Finally!

I just looked at CBS Sports at their 2026 Draft Rankings

    2Dante MooreOregonSophQB 2 6-3 206

    3Rueben Bain Jr.Miami (Fla.)JrEDGE 1 6-3 270

I’m surprised Bain is that high. Did his play in the CFB Playoffs raise his stock that much?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

NO… even prior to the CFB playoffs, many had Bain going at R1P1.

I don’t see it, nor does BBM or Rich.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I saw some a few months ago that had him between 4-7. He was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and he’s mostly played better against top competition than the weaker guys. I don’t think he’s as good as they do but he was very productive this playoff until the Ole Miss game. I wouldn’t take him though even as a Miami fanboi.

  2. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think(?) many are trying to find the next Myles Garrett. Bain’s size has him close to Myles Garrett.

Sorry… I don’t see the next Garrett in Bain.

For Mets fans – Mets offer Kyle Tucker a 3 year deal at $40-50M per. WTF!!! What did Pete Alonso do so wrong that they didn’t even try to sign him for comparable money?

  4. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Mike Tomlin is not a good coach. He’s been a figurehead and placeholder to prove the Rooney’s right for their unnecessary hiring rule.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

9th winningest coach in NFL history. Never had a losing season. He’s not a great coach compared to dudes like Shula, Belichick and Reid (who is), but he’s better than a lot of other coaches. Dude doesn’t get nearly enough credit. The best coaches are the best because they have a generational talent at QB. That’s it for the most part. His winning % is on par with Sean Payton and better than Harbaugh’s.

His post season success is awful but so is Roethlisberger’s postseason int rate. What’s impressive is he continued to win with terrible QBs like Trubisky, Rudolph, and Pickett. Dude has done a pretty good job overall with the talent he has.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

WTF? Go sniff Jake Scott’s jock strap..

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bri – Alonso signed for 5YR/$155M. I think he would have considered 3YR/$150M, no? Now we’re going to potentially pay a guy who really isn’t a fit here, bats left, and plays RF, where Soto plays. They’ll either have to move Soto to LF, or Tucker to LF, where neither has played before. It seems clear they just didn’t like Alonso, and I guess that’s fine as long as Tucker works out here. If not, they look like idiots

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I’m not defending the move- I wanted Alonso back like every other Mets fan. I wonder if they just hater dealing with his agent.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s Alonso the person. I got the feeling they just don’t like him. I like his production, I don’t have to deal with his personality.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Mike Tomlin inherited Ben Roethlisberger, who he had from 2007-2021. Ben was a very solid, capable QB, and they won a SB together. Still, Tomlin had a winning record with QB Kenny Picket/Mason Rudolph when Pickett was injured and then Russell Wilson/Justin Fields, and then Aaron Rodgers. I know the Steelers Front Office has been among the top in the NFL and the roster has always been quality, but to say he’s not a good Head Coach seems very unfair. Hopefully we can have the same problem here for the next 19 years where we hire a Head Coach, win a Super Bowl and have 19 winning seasons. I’ll take that over the shit we’ve had here for sure!

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Dolphins have let go Assistant GM Marvin Allen. Makes sense, Sully don’t need anything from the leftover clusterfuck.

I just read an article in USA Today by Matt Hayes, “Time to focus on Indiana”s NFL talent.”

I’ll try and find a link, but a bunch in the top 100…is that for real?

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Thanks for sharing that article Krishna! I am looking forward to seeing that matchup between Bain and Indiana LT Carter Smith. Smith could raise his draft stock to day 2 with a solid performance. I think he would be a stud LG in the NFL.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I thought you might have some insight. The article addressed that match up specifically….thought Smith would be in command. We shall see.

  10. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I am not that high on taking RT’s Mauigoa or Fano at #11. Only because this draft is loaded with RT’s. The top 4 RT’s are really close for me. I would rather trade down and gain another 2nd and draft either RT’s Blake Miller or Max Iheanachor.

I think Mauigoa might be a little overrated anyway. He’s good but not that athletic, IMO. I almost think he would have to move inside in the NFL. Again, I am not an OL guy. I just go by what I see.

  11. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    MIke,

It’s not an unfair statement if you pay attention. He doesn’t really pick his coaches or his players. He has no other duties, but to show up on Game Day, chew gum, then clap his hands like a seal. Hiring and firing is basically determined by the front office.

He has no signature offense, defense, or game planning. He has no coaching tree. Any Coach that was successful after leaving the Steelers was on the staff he inherited from Cowher.

He was a 1 year DC for a losing team with a middle of the road defense, given the keys to the kingdom. He goes anywhere nearly anywhere else and no one remembers his name. He’s literally the only Rooney Rule hire in history.

FTR, I don’t think Harbaugh is all that great of a coach either. Both coach for strong organizations in a mediocre division where whoever ends up on top is basically a Peter principle. I would definitely say that Harbaugh is a better coach than Tomlin though, but I wouldn’t call him great. This league has been so devoid of true coaches for a long time now.

Haven’t yet looked at Sonny Styles tape, but with those freakish metrics, he can probably play inside or outside.

  34. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

HAPPY for Dante Moore making the right choice to return to Oregon (he needs to refine his game), instead of becoming a stej.

Only thing that sucks about that? He won’t be helping to push David Bailey down to us @ R1P11.

  35. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Too many people are sleeping on Keagen Trost, RT, Misery (Missouri, SEC). He can play both LT and RT (most recently RT), and in 891 snaps last season, he only gave up 1 sack (to Auburn… I think it was to senior DE Keyron Crawford), and only 3 sacks over the last 2 seasons over 1,663 snaps.

And if that’s not good enough, he’s an even better run-blocker than he is a pass-protector.

  36. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Here’s how I look at the draft:

    1st pick…BPA

    2nd pick…BPA

    3rd pick…BPA

    4th pick…BPA

    and so on

This team has needs literally everywhere. Find guys you can build a team with. I don’t think the position matters much at this point. I’d even be okay with prioritizing ability slightly less if the guy is a player I believe can help build a winning culture. Slightly less

    Harbaugh headed to the Giants

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Good for the Giants, they’re closer to where they need to be. Harbaugh doesn’t want to wait. For us, it makes more sense to build with a young HC and hopefully get to where we all want to be, a perennial playoff team who can compete for a SB

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Honestly, no big deal on not getting Harbaugh. The same with Tomlin.

The Philadelphia Eagles have begun reaching out to candidates regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy.

Former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll are at the top of their list, sources say.

  41. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rich, I have been watching a lot of Styles this morning. He has a high ceiling but he seems to play ILB like a safety. I don’t see him attacking downhill a lot. Almost like he is still learning to play ILB. I don’t see him doing things like Brooks does to avoid blocks. It is something he can improve on with his athletic ability.

Watching Jordyn Brooks and how he scrapes across the line, plays downhill and his great ability to dip under and avoid blocks kind of sets a standard I would like to see us get.

Styles does give you a LB who can do everything. Run defend, sure tackler, blitz and cover.

Right now, I can’t see taking him at #11 but would if trading down about 6-7 spots.

That’s just my take but who am I, lol.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Unless Caleb Downs falls to us, I’m always looking to trade down. This draft is all about the 2nd and 3rd rounds, in my opinion. Let’s load up on picks in those rounds. As for Styles, I think he’s still learning the position, but I honestly don’t care if he plays like a big safety; the guy doesn’t miss tackles!!! I think as he matures I could see him playing at 250; I guess time will tell on that.

  42. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Chris Perkins asks what our patience level is for this new regime. How many years do they have before they win a playoff game, you know, before we start calling for the new regime’s heads.

    https://www.sun-sentinel.com/2026/01/15/chris-perkins-dolphins-have-fresh-start-but-clock-still-ticking/

I pretty much in agree with him. I will give them TWO YEARS but the 3rd year they better have one a playoff game.

  43. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I am partial to taking Missouri ILB Josiah Trotter at pick 75. He’s bigger, faster and better than his older brother who is playing for the Eagles, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. He’s 6’2, 237 with the frame to get bigger.

He plays violent and punishes OL. He’s good at the things Brooks does in avoiding blocks, dipping under, and takes good angles. He’s quick in being able to avoid blocks.

Like Styles, he grades high in tackling and has a low missed tackle rate. His only knock would be in coverage though he has the quickness to get better at it.

  44. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Unless Caleb Downs falls to us, I’m always looking to trade down.

    ——–

That’s right where I am at. I feel, outside of Mendoza, he is the only one who is elite at their position. There are a couple others I would settle for at #11 but would prefer to trade down.

  45. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rock, with at least 8 picks this year and at least 8 picks next year and all that available 2027 cap, I give them until 2027. Though, if we draft a QB in 2027, I will give them until 2028, maximum.

  46. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I’m just looking for this team to be going in the right direction by 2027. I’ll just know it when I see I guess.

  47. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rich – I feel like we’re already in the right direction. Getting a GM who can draft well will improve the talent on the roster without giving away extra picks and then we won’t have to pick up high priced free agents. I think there a few coaches out there that can be as good or better than McDaniel, especially if we hire Stefanski

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

That is a theory though Mike. We won’t know it until it happens. That will take 2-3 years. If we draft well, did we hire the right coaching staff? If we hire the right coaching staff, did we hire the right GM to work the draft and free agency? These questions can only be answered by time.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

first step for us is to get guys through the draft

then keep players we obtained through the draft

we will see if the new GM does that

but we need a coach who can be innovative, make adjustments, have a disciplined lockeroom and bring up the talent we bring in

his Boston College teams were really bad

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Brian – Absolutely. I like the theory of hiring a competent GM from a good organization and then hiring a new head coach. It’s better than staying with Grier, his scouting staff and McDaniel

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      it wasn’t his scouting staff

he came up in the ranks of that staff

I don’t think he picked very many of them as the scouting staff didn’t change when we changed general managers

  51. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Someone is saying if we hire Kubiak or Stefanski that the Dolphins will draft Ty Simpson at #11. It was some yahoo writer. I don’t see that. I don’t see where Ty Simpson, at this point, would beat out Ewers.

I would say it is a real outside chance of that happening. I see Ty Simpson going to the Rams at #13 or Jets at #16. If he makes it past those 2 teams he won’t make it past the Steelers at #21.

It really starts right away. We might be a very good team in 2027 because of good coaching and two draft classes and FA periods.

    ————–

I absolutely share this optimism, IF Sully is the right guy for the job and we nail the HC hire… there’s no reason to believe it isn’t possible.

Now whether we DO get it right remains to be seen, and we’re used to being let down.

I’m cautiously optimistic at this stage in the game.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And I hate to say it… but IF the ’27 Draft class is going to be as nice as it’s shaping up to be, I don’t mind a mulligan season in ’26 to acquire the best possible option.

When ya think about, it almost has to be a mulligan season being we’re so bloated in cap expenditures.

  64. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

My gut tells me we’re going to lose DC Anthony Weaver. Why does that matter? Because our Defensive roster is currently geared to his style of Defense after two years of Drafts and FA acquisitions.

I know, I know… just reset the entire roster, right? Okay… so what if our new DC doesn’t know what to do with Chop Robinson, being he sucked last season and we may go to much more of a 3-4 look?

And what of Bradley Chubb… are we going to cut/trade him to get some cap relief?

I said it a few weeks back in December, we MUST ADDRESS the pass-rushing role, regardless. We couldn’t get it done WITH Chop and Chubb last season… not to mention WITH Jaelan Phillips and Matt Judon as well.

Doesn’t mean that we WILL draft a pass-rusher @ R1P11 (or with a trade up or trade down), but I think it looks pretty important! I mean, VERY important!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Even the elite DBs in the NFL can only cover for so long on any given play. Plus, the QB position is getting more and more mobile in Goodell’s pass-happy NFL.

The best way to curb the trend of the mobile QB? A legitimate pass-rush. Somebody who can disrupt the QB (yes, that means pressures count!).

But then… if the pressure gets there on time… it would be very nice to have a shutdown CB to make the QB pay for an untimely throw.

Just my $.02… I think the chances of us drafting either an elite pass-rusher or CB @ R1P11 is around 85%. We’ll have options, regardless of the new HC, OC, and DC.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Seemingly true, but what does “turn it around” mean in your mind? One good season after a down year? Two? or perennial success?

A lot of first year coaches got praised this season for their “turn arounds” Soandso went from 3-14 to 14-3 soandso went x to x. But those have only been one year records.

Did the Chiefs really become a bottom dweller? Or will they bonce back and take some of those wins away from the miraculous turn arounds again next year?

I’m not particularly high on Tua these days and I actually prefer building around Ewers or at least giving him a legit chance. I like the way he stands tall in the pocket and seems to know where he wants to go with the football. He also has a very unique quick release. He’s not a runner but I think he can pick up more yards on the ground than Tua.

He can be the answer to eating Tua’s contract. As long as the position is being played well who cares. I don’t see how Tua can remain on this team. Forget the money, new GM and HC.

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The article that Tim posted at 6:06 said that Hafley will probably call his own Defense. DAMNIT THAT IS WHAT COORDINATORS ARE FOR!!

    HARD PASS

He failed at BC, His defense fell to middle of the league after ONE good season when he lost ONE PLAYER.

    HARD PASS

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I am inclined to agree with this. Apparently Hafley interviews really well. Really well spoken, but that doesn’t translate to wins, or being able to run a successful organization.

We will see, but I worry about the connection to the Packers and Sullivan.

Dolphin still have to conduct their 2 Ronney rule interviews also, so It could be a bit yet, and maybe someone else will hire Hafley in the mean time.

It really starts right away. We might be a very good team in 2027 because of good coaching and two draft classes and FA periods.

    ———-

That is where I am at. Plenty of cap in 2027. Extend Achane and LB Brooks. I am not worried about how many years Achane has left. Give him 3yr contract. Even if he falls off a little, he will still be better than most out there.

This is the problem with MLB. As a Mets fan, we’re part of the problem for sure. There just has to be a salary cap and salary floor in MLB. To think that there can be a $2,112,966,760 difference between one team (LA Dodgers) and another team (Tampa Bay Rays) is absurd. Over 2 BILLION DOLLARS disparity! Insane. The Dodgers are just purchasing anyone and everyone they want, and this deferred contract bullshit needs to be removed.

  73. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I have whipped dog syndrome! I have the overwhelming feeling that the Dolphins are going to fuck up this coaching search and fumble the rebuild because of it.

I have this persistent feeling of dread…

My Avi might say I’m drinking kool-aide but my gut is queasy. I just know they are going to screw it up.

  74. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – No matter who we hire, there’s going to be skepticism and negativity. We have to give them a chance.

  75. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BTW – No way does Darren Waller come back to the Dolphins. If you’re a Tua cheerleader, you’re DEAD!

Darren Waller on Tua Tagovailoa: “I’m watching [Tua] throw darts every practice. It was just like, what the [explicit] am I watching. I never seen the anticipation and the accuracy… the skillset is definitely still there.” (

    ********************************************

Tua should continue to throw darts then, because he can’t fucking throw a football! LOL

  77. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Is there a reason we can’t just let Achane play out his current contract and then just franchise him IF he is still worth it? I mean…he may be the only player we have worth franchising. I’d even do a non exclusive tag and take those 2 first round picks if somebody actually gives him a big deal. What’s wrong with that? I don’t want to ever see a guy get a contract extension before it’s required ever again.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If I remember correctly, you can’t put a 1st round tender on a player drafted 3rd round or later.

Franchise tag would work and you could probably do a franchise tag and trade getting your 1st round pick that way.

  78. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I hear flag football is becoming thing. Maybe we can trade Tua to one of those teams. He won’t get hit, and we can get a dozen footballs and those snazzy flag belts.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

      LOL

I loved playing intramural flag football in the military. Of course, that was before they changed the rules and you could physically block someone. I did some of my best Hines Ward imitations playing flag football. Though, one blind side block on a dude, I caught his elbow in my throat. That wasn’t fun. lol

  79. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No one liked my “darts” joke? I cracked myself up with that one. lol

  80. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

That’s why I asked! I don’t really know the rules. I just don’t like tying up lots of money in a small, fragile RB. I think Dolphins fans suffer from serious FOMO, and it leads to bad ideas! Lol

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I just remember looking it up a couple years ago. I’m not 100% on that, but I think players drafted 3rd round or later can only be tagged/tendered for the round they were drafted in. I will have to check again because BBM’s memory is not as good as it once was.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If we were able to trade Achane for a 1st, I would probably do it. There are plenty of day 3 RB’s I like and a couple 3rd round options.

  81. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Randy got BBM thinking. We probably could trade Achane for a 1st. This is a decent draft for RB’s and we could get a good one in the 3rd round. We are in a rebuild/reset.
