Dolphins to build solid foundation with Sully and Haf

I watched the entire introductory press conference, and all I can say is that we have two passionate men, men who understand what needs to be done and have a plan already in place to execute that plan. I can tell with you confidence that will that they will stick to that plan, a process if you will. I know some of you, OK one of you, thought Chris Grier did a great job. I think part of the problem with Chris Grier was if he had a process, part of that problem was falling in love with certain players rather than having a draft grid with a whole bunch of players that you graded equally and then slide to the next player if a specific player you had interest in was taken. It seems clear to me that Grier, if he believed that he could just slide to player with a similar grade that it would work out, he would have done that. That’s part of Grier’s process. Identify a player, and make sure you get that player. After watching Sully and Haf discuss their plan, don’t bet on that ever happening again here in Miami. Draft picks are far too valuable to squander like that, especially when you have already traded away so many picks to trade for what you thought were impact players that didn’t actually impact the team.

As far as QB is concerned, I’m not saying there’s zero chance Tua Tagovailoa ever takes another snap for the Miami Dolphins, but I’d put it at less than 5%. It seemed clear to me they will be looking for QB’s, and also willing to give Quinn Ewers a shot, but it also seemed very likely to me that we will be drafting a QB in the 2026 Draft. That doesn’t mean RD 1, but they both understand that you need a QB, and that we might not have one on the roster, including Tua Tagovailoa. They also made it clear that until they find a QB, they will continue to draft QB’s, which I believe is the correct way to approach winning.

One thing I was also impressed with was each guy’s humility, and their honesty about their journeys to where they are now. I really do believe that they interviewed each and every candidate fairly but with the knowledge that a candidate was going to have knock their socks off to surpass Jeff Hafley, not because of the familiarity, but because of the man he was familiar with. You can feel the passion and the sacrifices that Hafley made to rise up to the ranks of an NFL coordinator. Both of these gentlemen appear to be tireless workers who give their all, and to turn this program around, that will be much needed. Hafley seems like a guy who will work with players and demand and expect excellence and dedication. If he doesn’t get that dedication, I think the player will know it, and if it continues, things won’t fester like they did under McDaniels watch. He seems like a total no nonsense type of guy that will everyone, including himself accountable. That is another thing that is much needed here in Miami. These “star” players running the asylum is over, this is a team, and everyone is part of that team, no exceptions.

Another observation is that these two guys definitely have a synergy. While that’s not a necessary component, I think it will help us quickly turn things around. Sometimes it’s good to have guys with different philosophies because there’s rarely only one way to do things, but despite the hierarchy where in this the GM has final say on everything, if the ideologies are so different, you’re bound to have one or the other get seriously frustrated to the point where the relationship could break. It appears as if these guys are definitely on the same page. How Chris Grier was influenced by Stephen Ross, we’ll never know. At the very least, it looks like Sully and Haf are free to do as they please, and Stephen Ross will not only allow it, but be willing to financially back whatever they need. In my mind, that’s ALL Stephen Ross should be doing is opening the purse strings, but he needs to stay out of football operations completely. He did the right thing, hired what appears to be a very competent GM who has now hired his Head Coach, and now that Head Coach will fill out his staff, hire two coordinators, and all the assistant coaches too.

Head Coach Jeff Hafley made it clear that he will be calling plays for the defense, it’s what he loves to do, and although we will be hiring a Defensive Coordinator, it will be Hafley running the defense. I have no issue with that as long it doesn’t appear that he has too much on his plate and other areas of being a Head Coach are suffering. I do think it could potentially limit who will want to come here as DC if Hafley is calling the game. We’ll find out. More than likely we will have first time coordinators on both sides of the ball, so we’ll have to wait and see how that works. Keep in mind that Mike McDaniel was in his 4th season here and he couldn’t figure out a game plan where we were able to win the 3rd quarter nearly the entire season.

As far as the roster is concerned, we basically heard nothing on that because they are still evaluating that, so no comment was the right comment. I have a feeling we will be trimming a lot of fat around here, and guys like Tua, Chubb, Hill might not be around very long. They want young players that will buy into what they’re doing, and frankly, I loved Hafley’s answer to the questions about players late to meetings and that kind of behavior. There will have to be a mutual respect between Coach and player, he will work hard, the player will work hard, and the Coach will push the player to work hard for his team and hopefully, the players will all buy into the team concept,. Let’s face it, we have too many “me” guys, especially the white hot spotlight on the most important position on the field, as identified by Sully and Haf, the QB. Tua embodies NOTHING of a guy who gives it his all for his team, and hasn’t since he got paid. Now Hill is a different story, on game day, Hill was a beast, a dog if you will, but meeting, and the like, he never felt like that applied to him, he was special. Jeff Hafley looks like won’t be tolerating that type of nonsense, and if it continues, that player will be gone, Hafley said that himself.

So now, after all that is said and done, we get to sit back and watch these two guys and their staff build this team after thoroughly evaluating the roster to see who are keepers and who is a goners. Without directly saying it, I’d be willing to bet an awful lot that we’re drafting a QB. As I have made it clear, I’d love to draft a QB, have that QB and Quinn Ewers compete for a starting job, and potentially bring in an inexpensive veteran QB as well, and that means NOT Malik Willis. I don’t think these guys are looking to spend money at that position, especially considering how much of the cap is already invested in a QB who won’t be playing here, Tua Tagovailoa. Hopefully, Former DC Anthony Weaver gets a HC gig this year, and we have yet another 3rd RD pick, a compensatory pick, but one that can turn into a player that can help this team soon. I’m pleased with what we have done, I’m optimistic that we’ll see a difference in 2026, but have a chance to really compete in 2027. I figure 2 drafts and nice reshaping of the roster and a little more cap space to fill in. We won’t be treading picks away for players or moving up and trading picks to move up, I can almost guarantee you that practice left the building with Chris Grier. We will use free agency when we have cap space, but that doesn’t mean our best players on the roster will come via free agency, no, our best players will be drafted. They stressed that several times, and I love it! I wish Sully and Haf all the success and best of luck as they bring this franchise back to being among the perennial contenders, like it used to be when I was a kid.

Dude! He has been a QB coach for ONE YEAR he has been in coaching altogether for a TOTAL of 8 years.

49rs – 2017 diversity hire (no specific posisition)

Colts – 2019 diversity hire Promoted to “quality control”

Vikings – 22 Assistant QB coach

    Texans 23 – QB coach

I want a METRIC SHIT TON more experience for my offensive play designer / play caller!!!! This is a ridiculous suggestion for the position.

    -=-=-=-=—-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==—=-=-=—=——=

Maybe the dude is an offensive genius waiting to shine. If Hafley has known for weeks who he wants, have to assume he knows the dude’s work. And next year is pretty much a throwaway year – good time to take chances.

Both guys sounded smart. That’s all I really take way from these things. I don’t really care what they say because it’s all blah blah at this point, but I want to listen to how they speak and figure out if they sound smart enough to make it work. We’ll see if they can actually do anything.

  4. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I understand the strategy of drafting a QB every year. I get it, but again…the Packers have really only hit on 2 QBs in decades….and I’m being generous with putting Jordan Love in that 2 as I’m not sure he’s proven much yet but he’s seen as a good player. And…those 2 successes ended up being a first round pick anyway. Is the strategy all that productive?

That’s a lot of wasted draft capitol for very, very little return.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

First off, Malik Willis might be a serviceable QB as well, he might just get his chance this season if he’s traded. Secondly, Sully wasn’t the GM, so what GB did doesn’t necessarily reflect on Sully as he didn’t make those picks. Before Love, they had Aaron Rodgers, so QB wasn’t really a priority and they treated that way

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Talking about a lot of wasted draft capital, take a look at our track record over the last 10-20 years. That’s a lot of wasted draft capital!!!

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

As I remember, they often traded those spare QB for decent picks.

  5. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Okay, so hear me out on this one…

I’m NOT ‘Tradey Pants Tannenbuam’, nor a student of ‘General Grief’. But IF we end up with FOUR 3rd round picks this Draft (that’s contingent upon Anthony Weaver landing a HC job this cycle), I would seriously consider trading up in the 1st, JUST A COUPLE OF SPOTS(!), to land David Bailey.

See, Bailey had already graduated from college (Stanford) and came back to play college ball in ’25, being he had another year of eligibility. He’s clearly an intelligent individual who loves the game of football.

He’s not flashy… as in, he’s not wearing eye-paint, he’s not wearing stand-out accessories to be noticed, he’s not a prima donna jackass on the field, and he’s all about his business.

David Bailey reminds me in many ways of Cam Wake with his work ethic, his professionalism, and his humble ways as a person.

This SCREAMS to me that he’s the type of person Sully and Hafley would love to draft, just as a person alone!

As for Bailey’s production on the gridiron? It speaks for itself: he’s a top-10 draft pick.

Thus, I’d be willing to move NO MORE than 3 spots up from R1P11 to land David Bailey. It’s too bad we didn’t lose 1 more game in ’25 or have Dante Moore declare, so as to have him fall in our lap. He’s going to be a game-changer in the NFL.

Now, then… even with all of the above stated, I feel Bailey is going to kill the Combine and his interviews, so as to enter the top-5… and I am NOT trading up into the top-5 to secure Bailey… too rich for my blood.

So if I’m right, we won’t even need to concern ourselves with Bailey. But if he makes it to R1P9, I’d SERIOUSLY consider the trade up for him.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And again, that’s ONLY if we get an additional 3rd rounder (a FOURTH) should Anthony Weaver land a HC gig in this cycle.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I agree

but he could easily end up going top 5

so we have to see if he drops in that range – but there is no reason not to give up a 3rd to move up a few spots for a player like that

  6. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And for the record, I’d be just as happy to trade down from R1P11 to acquire an additional 1st round pick in ’27… for THAT is when we’ll be drafting our future franchise QB, IMO.

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Since drafting A-rod in 2005, the packers have only spent 8 draft picks out of 190 picks on QB’s since then. In 13 of the last 20 drafts, they didn’t use a pick on a QB. They have spent 1 first on Jordan Love, 1 second, 3 fifths and 3 sevenths on QBs in the last 20 years.

They only spent a 1st when they were ready to find a replacement for Rodgers. They only spent a 2nd when trying to find a solid backup in 2008 for Rodgers the year they let Farve go.

I don’t see that as a lot. Though, when you look at the names, some make you go “Who?”

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Malik Willis might be a serviceable QB as well, he might just get his chance this season if he’s traded.

    ——-

    He’s an unrestricted free agent.

  9. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

    2. Sonny Styles-LB, Ohio St.

    4a. Spencer Fano-RT, Utah

We bought a whole house natural gas generator a few years back. Can’t tell you how many times that’s saved our ass. Just happened too often so we we bought the generator. Money very well spent!

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Heavy snow typically means it’s going to be a lot of snow, not that it will be heavy. It depends on the temps- the colder it is , the lighter it is. It’s going to be bitterly cold up here, so it will be light in weight.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Same here, Brian. And that’s why I don’t trust the weatherman/woman any longer. They are saying that it’s going to be a WET, HEAVY snow that will take out power lines.

We’re barely getting out of the ‘teens’ as a high over the next several days… that should make it light and fluffy, right? I agree with you.

2 years and playing calling isn’t the big deal everyone thinks it is. Some are just better at it like everything else.

    _____

Play calling is important for an OC and so is having a guy that is better at it. I still would have liked someone more experienced for Hafley to lean on. That doesn’t mean I’m not open to Slowik being the OC as I indicated in my previous post.

  58. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So with Hafley confirming yesterday that he’ll be calling the Defense — and he’ll use the ‘Wide-9’ (at times, who knows how often?) — it tells us something: the pass-rusher we target via the Draft will likely need to be fast, be able to bend it like Beckham, and consistently disrupt the QB (preferably via sack, but pressures matter).

There are several of those players in this draft-class likely available on day 2 of the Draft… IF we aren’t looking for a 3-down pass-rusher who’s legit against the run, like David Bailey.

Dammit, I despise the ‘Wide-9’. Why? Even if we only deploy it on 3rd and 40 sits, the RB will either run it for 41 yards or catch a screen-pass for 41 yards… and probably for a TD. HISTORY has taught us as much.

ANYWAY, if we’re looking for very good, situational pass-rushing with novice run-defense for the ‘Wide-9’, we’ll likely find a guy there… likely round 3.

  61. Randy's avatar Randy says:

For a wide 9 you want pure speed. Not quickness. Yes, quickness helps at the top of the rush just like with any rush, but it’s about speed. Unless you’re gonna somehow play a lot of twist games with your edge guy which is harder in a Wide 9 because of the spacing….small area quickness comes into play less.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Better be able to get a jump on those Tackles, Randy. That’s where quickness comes in. And that’s something Charles Harris severely lacked, man.

  63. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

Well, if you’re talking about get off….you want that from everybody. Sure, it helps, but it’s a given you want every DL to get off the ball fast. But, if you’re gonna have a guy line up that far away, you want guys who have a fast 10 yard dash. That’s what I look for…not get off. You only get about 2.5 seconds regardless, you better have the speed to get there if you’re lining up that far outside. If you can get both…great!

Haley was a beast….and a pure technician. He was one smart dude.

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Most teams use the wide 9. Too much is made of it. The 3-4 or 4-3 base is a thing of the past. Teams are always in nickel. Then dime. The only time old school football is in place is in short yardage and red zone depending on down and distance.

When I watch football and not just the Dolphins I see a majority of 11 personnel on offense and a 4-2-5 defense showing different looks like 3 down 1 standing and the back 7 disguising blitz and coverages. It’s about talent.

Most teams run the ball in shotgun with draws but it’s not really a draw anymore. It’s a common play now. Some teams line up and play smash mouth but how many plays is it really, 10-12?

  70. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I don’t want Weaver going to the Bills. I’d much rather him go to the Cardinals. Philip Rivers would be a great coach for them- they should hire him.

  76. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I don’t think our route concepts sucked, the execution was sub par.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

if you watched the Kurt Warner video, you wouldn’t be saying that

he shows many routes, where it isn’t designed to move defenders out of the spot you want to throw it

the one that prompted his video was the int Tua threw at the end of the game, not only didn’t the route design move the Mike, MM didn’t advise Tua which defender was the problem

our new OC needs to do better

  78. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bri – Did you think Weaver was anything special while he was here? I do recall him getting some love for a while here, but then it waned when our defense disappeared a few times. It’s so darn hard to really evaluate things when. the offense is horrible, can’t move the ball in the 3rd quarter the entire season, and then the defense is supposed to match up with the other team and also keep making stops. It’s amazing how bad we were on both sides of the ball in the 3rd quarter. I know the Jets not having one interception is an NFL favorite, but being outscored 130-27 for the season in the 3rd quarter should be right up there. I know this season he had a lot of rookies on the D-line and that probably hurt Weaver’s defense, but the secondary with MFFF and whoever else they had at safety, and when Jack Jones and Rasul Douglas were out there, they were solid. The LB’s were good all season (interior) Brooks and Dodson and Britt and Gay. WE got nothing from the OLB position with the exception of Chubb who played some LB and some DL. Chop was invisible, and Phillips did what he always did, got in the vicinity of the QB for his awesome “pressure” stats but never actually took the QB down. Now Eagles fans understand our frustration

  79. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – I wouldn’t assume Slowik will be a carbon copy of McDaniel. McDaniel was the innovator and playcaller, Slowik was there, as was Bevell and Studesville, but McDaniel had control over the offense. That doesn’t mean Slowik will do what Mike did, i think we better pray real hard he doesn’t.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

my question is does he use the same playbook, or similar, that uses those shitty MM plays

of course he’ll have some new ones too

problem with MM is he puts more emphasis on the cute play, that everyone thinks is genius, instead of tge bread and butter

he does the same thing when he talks, tries to say the perfect thing, that makes him sound like a genius, but what comes out while his brain is trying to process is ahh dut dah

  80. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I only liked Weaver because he sounded like an actual coach after listening to Capri McD.

He wasn’t given anything to work with so I find it hard to judge him

  81. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Getting rid of Tua will make everything better. Is he gone yet?

  82. Randy's avatar Randy says:

It’s almost always poor execution, as Tim said. There are poor play calls and poorly designed plays or times when a defense adjusts unexpectedly all the time. It’s up to the players to adjust and execute. The Tua interception is a perfect example. It may have been a poorly designed play or maybe the defense adjusted. We don’t know and Warner doesn’t know. Tua STILL decided to throw a very bad, stupid throw. Poor execution. He should have never thrown the pass.

Funny how MM is lauded as a genius after 2023 and somehow becomes a moron when it’s not working. It’s the players. I’m not a fan of MM, but the flip flop is pretty egregious.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

when you design a play you have to account for the coverage

      MM does nothing thoroughly

MM doesn’t know how to adjust in game, if he didn’t call plays he may have figured it out

Looks like that sack of Maye might have been a horse collar, but if it was it wasn’t egregious; refs didn’t flag it. There was also a Broncos run that just barely touched the 1st down line and I was sure the refs would spot it short. Refs surprisingly not in the Pets pockets so far.

never understood the logic of having the punt return team’s guy covering the gunner, lining up at the LOS and trying to block him all the way down the field

put him at the 1st down marker, then just have him back pedal, then he can just turn and run back towards the KR guy, then locate the gunner 5 or so yards before KR guy
