Dolphins to build solid foundation with Sully and Haf

I watched the entire introductory press conference, and all I can say is that we have two passionate men, men who understand what needs to be done and have a plan already in place to execute that plan. I can tell with you confidence that will that they will stick to that plan, a process if you will. I know some of you, OK one of you, thought Chris Grier did a great job. I think part of the problem with Chris Grier was if he had a process, part of that problem was falling in love with certain players rather than having a draft grid with a whole bunch of players that you graded equally and then slide to the next player if a specific player you had interest in was taken. It seems clear to me that Grier, if he believed that he could just slide to player with a similar grade that it would work out, he would have done that. That’s part of Grier’s process. Identify a player, and make sure you get that player. After watching Sully and Haf discuss their plan, don’t bet on that ever happening again here in Miami. Draft picks are far too valuable to squander like that, especially when you have already traded away so many picks to trade for what you thought were impact players that didn’t actually impact the team.

As far as QB is concerned, I’m not saying there’s zero chance Tua Tagovailoa ever takes another snap for the Miami Dolphins, but I’d put it at less than 5%. It seemed clear to me they will be looking for QB’s, and also willing to give Quinn Ewers a shot, but it also seemed very likely to me that we will be drafting a QB in the 2026 Draft. That doesn’t mean RD 1, but they both understand that you need a QB, and that we might not have one on the roster, including Tua Tagovailoa. They also made it clear that until they find a QB, they will continue to draft QB’s, which I believe is the correct way to approach winning.

One thing I was also impressed with was each guy’s humility, and their honesty about their journeys to where they are now. I really do believe that they interviewed each and every candidate fairly but with the knowledge that a candidate was going to have knock their socks off to surpass Jeff Hafley, not because of the familiarity, but because of the man he was familiar with. You can feel the passion and the sacrifices that Hafley made to rise up to the ranks of an NFL coordinator. Both of these gentlemen appear to be tireless workers who give their all, and to turn this program around, that will be much needed. Hafley seems like a guy who will work with players and demand and expect excellence and dedication. If he doesn’t get that dedication, I think the player will know it, and if it continues, things won’t fester like they did under McDaniels watch. He seems like a total no nonsense type of guy that will everyone, including himself accountable. That is another thing that is much needed here in Miami. These “star” players running the asylum is over, this is a team, and everyone is part of that team, no exceptions.

Another observation is that these two guys definitely have a synergy. While that’s not a necessary component, I think it will help us quickly turn things around. Sometimes it’s good to have guys with different philosophies because there’s rarely only one way to do things, but despite the hierarchy where in this the GM has final say on everything, if the ideologies are so different, you’re bound to have one or the other get seriously frustrated to the point where the relationship could break. It appears as if these guys are definitely on the same page. How Chris Grier was influenced by Stephen Ross, we’ll never know. At the very least, it looks like Sully and Haf are free to do as they please, and Stephen Ross will not only allow it, but be willing to financially back whatever they need. In my mind, that’s ALL Stephen Ross should be doing is opening the purse strings, but he needs to stay out of football operations completely. He did the right thing, hired what appears to be a very competent GM who has now hired his Head Coach, and now that Head Coach will fill out his staff, hire two coordinators, and all the assistant coaches too.

Head Coach Jeff Hafley made it clear that he will be calling plays for the defense, it’s what he loves to do, and although we will be hiring a Defensive Coordinator, it will be Hafley running the defense. I have no issue with that as long it doesn’t appear that he has too much on his plate and other areas of being a Head Coach are suffering. I do think it could potentially limit who will want to come here as DC if Hafley is calling the game. We’ll find out. More than likely we will have first time coordinators on both sides of the ball, so we’ll have to wait and see how that works. Keep in mind that Mike McDaniel was in his 4th season here and he couldn’t figure out a game plan where we were able to win the 3rd quarter nearly the entire season.

As far as the roster is concerned, we basically heard nothing on that because they are still evaluating that, so no comment was the right comment. I have a feeling we will be trimming a lot of fat around here, and guys like Tua, Chubb, Hill might not be around very long. They want young players that will buy into what they’re doing, and frankly, I loved Hafley’s answer to the questions about players late to meetings and that kind of behavior. There will have to be a mutual respect between Coach and player, he will work hard, the player will work hard, and the Coach will push the player to work hard for his team and hopefully, the players will all buy into the team concept,. Let’s face it, we have too many “me” guys, especially the white hot spotlight on the most important position on the field, as identified by Sully and Haf, the QB. Tua embodies NOTHING of a guy who gives it his all for his team, and hasn’t since he got paid. Now Hill is a different story, on game day, Hill was a beast, a dog if you will, but meeting, and the like, he never felt like that applied to him, he was special. Jeff Hafley looks like won’t be tolerating that type of nonsense, and if it continues, that player will be gone, Hafley said that himself.

So now, after all that is said and done, we get to sit back and watch these two guys and their staff build this team after thoroughly evaluating the roster to see who are keepers and who is a goners. Without directly saying it, I’d be willing to bet an awful lot that we’re drafting a QB. As I have made it clear, I’d love to draft a QB, have that QB and Quinn Ewers compete for a starting job, and potentially bring in an inexpensive veteran QB as well, and that means NOT Malik Willis. I don’t think these guys are looking to spend money at that position, especially considering how much of the cap is already invested in a QB who won’t be playing here, Tua Tagovailoa. Hopefully, Former DC Anthony Weaver gets a HC gig this year, and we have yet another 3rd RD pick, a compensatory pick, but one that can turn into a player that can help this team soon. I’m pleased with what we have done, I’m optimistic that we’ll see a difference in 2026, but have a chance to really compete in 2027. I figure 2 drafts and nice reshaping of the roster and a little more cap space to fill in. We won’t be treading picks away for players or moving up and trading picks to move up, I can almost guarantee you that practice left the building with Chris Grier. We will use free agency when we have cap space, but that doesn’t mean our best players on the roster will come via free agency, no, our best players will be drafted. They stressed that several times, and I love it! I wish Sully and Haf all the success and best of luck as they bring this franchise back to being among the perennial contenders, like it used to be when I was a kid.

Bill promote Joe Brady to HC after firing McDermott…

LMAO! The reason provided for firing of McDermott doesn’t make sense now that they just promoted the guy under him.

  2. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

There was some discussion on here about tanking this season and I argued that tanking would be good for the team and that the coach didn’t have to try to lose games and that the team could tank organically. With the roster in the shape it is, the salary cap situation and next years schedule I don’t think the coaches will have to ‘humiliate’ themselves by openly tanking. Just fill the roster as they can and run with what they have and they are going to naturally finish with a higher draft pick (just in time for the 2027 draft where the better QB’s are coming out)

We play the Pets and Jills twice, then at home we have the Chiefs, Bears, Lions, Bengals and Chargers the we have on the road the Broncos, Colts, 49rs, Packers, Vikings and raiders.

at our 2025 best we could maybe win 3-4 of those games. (Jet’s & Raiders) as I am not counting the bizarre Bills win as the Dolphins being the better team)

I looks like a shit ride for fans next season, but we will most likely benefit from it in the long run.

That’s how I feel, I said that on this blog earlier. Not the same words and not a long post, but said we’re not going to be very good next season. Even if we hit on all our picks, there’s so many holes and a lot of work to do, and no cap money

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

This has been my train of thought from the jump. No matter what we do in ’26, it won’t be enough. As you put it, an “organic tank season”.

No matter who we hired to be HC, it must be understood that it’s a ‘mulligan season’ due to the reset, cap complications, and we’re highly unlikely to find our QB of the future this season.

What a racket the NFL is. They are now promoting clothing from Bad Bunny’s “Concho” line. The release is saying Bad Bunny is “giving” something extra to his fans.

Yeah, this is giving: “Hoodies are are $100, t-shirts are $55, adjustable caps are $60, and plushie “Concho” keychains are $40, available in all 32 NFL team colors.”

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

One of the ways your FO can facilitate tanking is by trading away good players or players who may be playing for a contract. I don’t expect players to tank but there are plenty of ways the organization can tank.

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

With us staying in the Shanahan system, FB will be needed. We need to cut Ingold. He is not the future and he was gun shy the whole season after he got a concussion. He’s not worth his 5m cap hit.

The Shine Bowl features 1 FB I really like. Indiana’s TE/FB Riley Nowakowski, 6’2, 243 on the West team. He was a FB at Wisconsin for 3 seasons then lined up at TE and FB for Indiana. He’s a really good blocker and a good receiving threat.

He might be my final pick in many of my mock drafts.

Randy, Mark Gronowski really impressed last night. I think I might like him as much as Sawyer Robertson.

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

I didn’t get to watch the game last night. I haven’t been a big fan of Gronowski. I’ve seen plenty of him and very little of Robertson, but I’d probably stick with Robertson. His innate athletic tools seem better.

But, don’t let me put a wet blanket on your mock draft fun! I always like to see Iowa players on it.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t think he would ever be a starter in the NFL. He did make some nice throws last night though. He could be a good #2 with his ability to scramble and run. I wouldn’t mind drafting Robertson then adding Gronowski as a UDFA.

  23. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

  24. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  25. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

Yeah, I don’t see Gronowski as a starter either. Since you have looked at him more than I have, do you think Robertson is starter material?

I value pocket passers. Give me a guy with enough mobility to avoid the rush when needed, but I want a guy who manages the game from within the pocket.

If my QB is running, we’ve already failed to execute.

  26. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Some of the OL I like and their measurements at the Senior Bowl.

    RT Max Icheanachor 6’5.5, 325

    OT Cage Kasey 6’5.2, 309

    RT Gennings Dunker 6’4.7, 320

    OT Austin Barber 6’6.5, 318

    OG Keylan Rutledge 6’3.3, 316

    OG Jalen Farmer 6’4.6, 322

  27. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

I like Rutledge. When he initiates contact, the defender goes backwards. Nice choice.

  28. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

I just don’t think Dunker is NFL OT material. I think he and Rutledge would be very similar at guard.

  29. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

IMO, Robertson is the best day 3 QB prospect. With this weak QB class, I fear him and Chambliss go by the end of the 3rd round even though Robertson is projected to go 5th round. He’s 6’4, 225 and I really like his ball placement.

For the first time since the 2018 season, the Miami Dolphins will have a new running backs coach.

That new coach is Ladell Betts, who comes to Miami after working for the New York Giants in his first year as an NFL coach. Before that, Betts spent four seasons as a running backs coach at his alma mater, the University of Iowa.

Betts had a nine-year playing career in the NFL as, of course a running back with eight of the nine seasons spent with the Washington Redskins. His best season came in 2006 when he rushed for 1,154 yards and four touchdowns.

Before coaching at Iowa, Betts spent eight years as a high school coach in South Florida, including two as head coach at Pine Crest School in Boca Raton.

By all appearances, there doesn’t seem to be any prior connection to either new Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley or offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.

In Betts’ one year as Giants running backs coach, the team finished fifth in the NFL in rushing at 129.1 yards per game and rookie Cam Skattebo shined until he was sidelined by a season-ending ankle injury.

Betts becomes the fifth reported addition to the Dolphins coaching staff, joining O-line coach Zach Yenser, DB coach Ryan Downard, special teams coordinator Chris Tabor, and wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert, along with the promotion of Slowik to offensive coordinator.

Green Bay Packers linebackers coach Sean Duggan also is expected to join the Dolphins coaching staff, very possibly as defensive coordinator.

  34. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

One day after interviewing Brian Duker, the New York Jets are hiring him as their next defensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday, per sources.

The team later announced Duker’s hire.

Duker, 36, was most recently the passing game coordinator and secondary coach for the Miami Dolphins. He spent time with current Jets coach Aaron Glenn on the Detroit Lions’ coaching staff from 2021-23, when Glenn was defensive coordinator and Duker was a rising assistant.

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jim Schwartz’s future in Cleveland is unclear after the Browns DC was visibly upset after learning he was passed over for the head coaching job on Wednesday, per Rapoport, Pelissero and Garafolo. Schwartz, who is under contract, wants out, per The Insiders.

  36. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I missed this one. Our roster is at 52 now. They added Edge/OLB Seth Coleman 6’3.4, 248, 4.68 forty, 7.14 RAS a week ago. He was a UDFA signed by Seattle but cut in final cuts then spent 2 weeks on the Colts practice squad. He was just drafted by the Houston UFL team to play for them but then a week later the Dolphins offered him a futures contract.

Jeff Hafley recently named Bobby Slowik the new offensive coordinator in Miami. Slowik spent the 2023-24 seasons as the play caller for the Houston Texans. • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

They can, or they can try to trade Chubb, eat some of his salary and get a pick for him . I read that Tua will likely be cut (if they are going to cut him) before the league year starts in 3-13 because they will owe him $16 million that day

That might be just his natural progression. If you’re going to give Barry the credit for Paul and Brewer than you have to kill him for Savaiinaea, who was absolutely trash all season long. I mean Brewer came here year 5 of his NFL career, hard to say it was Barry who made him what he is.

  49. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Reports are Tyreek won’t be ready for the start of the 2026 season and likely not at all for the entire 2026 season.

We have to clear cap now. Tyreek’s dead cap is 28.2m. Cut pre 6/1 we will clear 22.8m. Cut post 6/1 we would clear 35.2m.

If we cut him pre 6/1, he will get no check and have no income in 2026 because he physically can’t play. All that 28.2m owed on paper he has already gotten. None of his base salary this year is guaranteed.

Why not get him to restructure his contract and reduce his base salary to the 1.3m vet minimum and do away with his roster bonus for 2026. Then spread the 28.2m owed on paper out over 4 years, 2026 and 3 void years (like it is now). This would reduce his cap hit in 2026 to 8.3m and clear 42.8m in 2026 cap.

Again, we need the money now so a post 6/1 release is out of the question. You can cut him pre 6/1 and clear 22.8m in March or keep him on the roster, restructure him and clear 42.8m in March.

Then put Tyreek on IR for the season and let him continue to rehab at the Dolphins facilities. Tyreek draws a 1.3m check vs making nothing in 2026. Tyreek then finishes out his contract in Miami and becomes a free agent in 2027 and also becomes part of the comp pick formula if/when he signs with a new team in 2027.

It’s a win, win, win situation for both parties.

You do have to keep in mind that even though there are void years, all that money owed on paper gets accelerated when the player becomes a free agent. So, that remaining 21m owed over the 3 void years will all come out of the 2027 cap. It’s happening to us this year with Zack Wilson. Even after the remaining 21m owed comes out of the 2027 cap, we will still be around 80m in 2027 cap space based on the current projections and the roster as it is now.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This one move would take us from 22m over the cap to 20m under the cap. It will give some money to sign some free agents but also give them time to work some trade deals on Chubb and maybe Minkah.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I didn’t see that. I had just read an article from a week ago that said he still wasn’t going to be ready or possibly play in 2026. They probably didn’t do any research on his progress though.

I have no idea what all that financial stuff means. Here’s how you handle the Hill situation. Show him how a door works.

  52. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Anthony Weaver to Cleveland as DC. No picks for us.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Oh well! I didn’t really think either MM or Weaver were HC material

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

he’s gets to coach Myles Garrett and take credit for it. The only thing the Browns do right is play defense

I don’t think Weaver came close to living up to the hype about his hiring

but I also think, and he mentioned before, that some of the ways Grier did stuff, put him at a disadvantage – specifically adding guys very late instead of earlier signings at the start at TC

With this next snow storm to hit the Carolina’s, the winds are going to be very strong all the way down into Florida.

Like lake affect snow they are predicting possible “gulf affect” snow for as far south as inland Tampa and possibly Orlando.

  54. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It sounds like former Packers LBs coach Sean Duggan is going to be our DC.

  55. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m watching senior bowl practices, so I get to constantly see what Daniel Jeremiah thinks about players. He has us taking a tight end in Kenyon Sadiq at 11 when he ranks him as his 21st best player and says he drops balls. WTF?

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

      Makes no sense. LOL

I would be mad at taking a TE at #11. He’s not a game changer, IMO. He was a nonfactor in all 3 of Oregon’s playoff games with 11 rec, 70 yards and 0 TD’s total in those 3 big games.

  56. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

    Dunker getting reps at guard.

  57. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Haf has great respect for the Shanahan style of offense but wants to be more physical as well. Slowick keeps that going while building on it.

  58. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,

It was more a comment about Jeremiah….who was a professional scout. Wasn’t he? Lol

OL is always a solid choice. We have plenty of needs. They need to just get good players.

    BOOK CLUB:

    The Lies of Locke Lamora

    Scott Lynch

i’m about one chapter from the end. I recommend it

It was a good read. The guy continually falls from the firing pan into the fire into the frying pan into the fire into the frying pan into the fire And crazily escapes

well written and kept me on the edge of my seat

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

      👍

      I’ll check it out

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

It’s a good read. One of the better ones.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I just read read the King Killer books by Patrick Rothfus. Really good but I wish he would come out with next book. He did two books on other characters from the books instead of continuing the main character’s story.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Really great first book and solid 2nd book if a bit redundant. But I gave up on that story ever being finished; it’s been like 14 damned years we’ve been waiting for the 3rd book.

  60. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

I had to go out, so I didn’t see many reps. From what I saw, he’s probably the third rounder I thought he was. Maybe he pushes up into the second. Guys are overdrafted constantly anymore.

Sources say Nathaniel Hackett will join Jeff Hafley’s coaching staff in Miami as QBs coach.

  62. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I wonder how our GM is doing building the personnel/scouting operationd…that’s where you get the players

  63. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    What’s Sully doing? Lol

  64. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Randy, I don’t follow Mock Drafts anymore. We all know who will be selected top 5 and maybe top 10, but after that it’s off the rails. Just add good players to your team. Like you say, it’s always about the players.

  65. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    phish,

Same with Rothfuss. Been waiting for the third book for a long time. I’ve kinda gotten to the point where I wait until someone finishes a series before I start reading it. I hate waiting years between books.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I have drawn my hand back 20-30 times in the last decade reaching for book one, knowing he may never write book 3. LOL

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Like Cav said, it’s been 14 years. I also don’t start series anymore until they are all available. And instead of putting out the third book, the bastard published two side stories about minor characters.

100%, that’s what they do best for clicks. What more, the Stealers* hired Mike McCarthy for a reason… to keep A-Rod around, if he doesn’t decide to retire.

M – It’s impossible to know who deserves credit for what. Aaron Brewer was a good player when he got here, but he did improve while he was here, no doubt. That might be just his natural progression. If you’re going to give Barry the credit for Paul and Brewer than you have to kill him for Savaiinaea, who was absolutely trash all season long. I mean Brewer came here year 5 of his NFL career, hard to say it was Barry who made him what he is.

    ———-

IMO, Brew was a ‘fair’ player when he got here. But, I believe with the help of Butch Barry, he became an All-Pro player (AP-2nd team this past season)… never even had a Pro Bowl season before.

So, I ask you this: does Chris Grier get the credit for landing Brew, or was it Barry who put him over the top?

    “It’s difficult to say… it’s making me mental!” ~ Ed Grimley 😉

Yeah, Big Jonah looks to be a bust thus far, but it’s too early to write him off after a rookie season played at LG… away from his natty RG position. Gotta have faith he can only get better, I hope.

At any rate, I can’t stick up for Grier so much, as his batting average on O-Linemen is below the Mendoza Line over the years. To me, it looked as though Barry made at least some chicken salad out of chicken shit.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And to be fair about Darth Paul, T-STEAD has been so very, very important in his ascent. I wish T-STEAD would become an O-Line coach for us someday.

  68. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Haf hired Nathaniel Hackett as a QBs coach. He’s been a QBs coach, OC and HC. I think he’s done a good job with his staff.

  69. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m hearing people already criticizing the Hacket hire and I don’t get it

it’s just hiring a QB coach – the guy has a lot of experience at so many levels in the NFL

they call it the carousel for a reason. We didn’t hire him as a HC. It’s pretty normal stuff to hire a failed head coach to a lower position and let them crawl back up

it’s the way the nfl works

  70. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Hadley has hired a ton of people out of Green Bay

I guess it’s normal for people to surround themselves with familiar faces – but this is more than usual….

i have no idea if it leads to good results or not

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

For whatever it’s worth, Bill Parcells always said “don’t eat the cheese”. Well, we’re eating a lot of cheese from Green Bay… LOL

But seriously, I don’t have a problem with it… at least not yet.

  71. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We had Bevell as a QB Coach and he won a Super Bowl at OC. When he was hired I thought he was going to be the OC at some point, but that never planned out. At least we have experience there if Slowik falters. It’s probably hafley’s best hire at this point.

  72. Randy's avatar Randy says:

QB coach is a pretty important position with where this team is at right now, I’d think. It’s much more important who the QBs are, but they’re likely going to be young and need developing.

  73. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

GB has lost a ton of coaches this offseason. GB South has taken the majority but others have gone elsewhere too. They are going to need a job fair to fill positions.

  74. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I will say it again, but differently…lol.

    NO HALF MEASURES!

We gutted management, for good reason. Now, it’s time to gut the players with bad contracts or is bad contracts of players….lol…either way.

Rebuild from bottom up, as in the trenches and all the skill players will benefit.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Should be done organically as well. The last GM left us with 30+ URFA this season. 60=% of the team aren’t under contract. The rest need to be restructured or let go in order to get cap compliant. I think you will get your wish except for the players we drafted in 23, 24 & 25.

  75. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Am I old if I can remember the days when teams didn’t even have QB coaches? And miss those days? Lol

  76. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Didn’t know it was his first time.

QB Joe Flacco has been named as a Pro Bowl alternate. It is Flacco’s first time making the Pro Bowl in his 18-year NFL career.

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I really hope he becomes the Jets new OC. Just because of the name.

Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter is interviewing for New York’s OC job on Sunday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.
