Dolphins HC Jeff Hafley fills out coaching staff

Head Coach – Jeff Hafley

Offensive Coordinator – Bobby Slowik

Defensive Coordinator – Sean Duggan *

Special Teams Coordinator – Chris Tabor

QB’s Coach – Nathaniel Hackett

WR’s Coach – Tyke Tolbert

Asst. WR’s Coach – Jonathan Krause

RB’s Coach – LaDell Betts

CB’s Coach – Jahmile Addae

Defensive Quality Control Coach – Wendel Davis

Defensive Passing Game Coordinator – Ryan Downard

Strength and Conditioning Coach – Todd Hunt

Jeff Hafley has been quite busy as you can see filling out his coaching staff. Note that there are 2 positions with asterisks next to them, that’s because neither of those positions have been formally announced although this is the expected outcome. Sean Duggan as DC and Al Washington as Defensive Line Coach. As to who the DC officially is is not really all that important as Jeff Hafley will be calling the defense. The coaching staff is chock full of Green Bay Packers coaches, they must be thrilled that Jeff Hafley not only took the HC job here in Miami but took so much of their staff along with him.

There’s always going to be people who are going to say how important it is to watch to see coaching connections, who Head Coaches are able to bring in as coordinators and assistants. Well, I’ll tell you this, while there are no “big” names for coordinators, it does speak well of Haf that all these guys who worked for both Haf and Sully chose to follow them here, rather than work for a pretty darn good Head Coach in his won right, Todd LaFleur. This is definitely going to have to be a wait and see process here in Miami.

One thing I will reiterate after watching Haf speak is that he definitely appears to be a no nonsense guy, which of course is refreshing after being with a guy who was pretty accepting of nonsense. I’m guessing players who practice well won’t be getting to choose their favorite song the next practice, as it was with Mike McDaniel. The players loved it, don’t get me wrong, but we know we absolutely had an accountability issue here in Miami, players either missing certain meetings or constantly coming in late for them. This will not be tolerated, and despite the fact that these multi millionaire players can be spoiled brats, that doesn’t mean you let them get away with stuff. You have to set the tone of what will and won’t be tolerated, and clearly a change is necessary.

I won’t and can’t say that every guy we hired is the best in the business because they aren’t. What they more than likely are though is on the same page with Sully and Haf, and that my friends is a good thing. Everyone on the same page in the same direction doing it the same way should be helpful for the Dolphins as they truly begin building this team. There’s not much of a foundation here, and there’s going to be a departure of a bunch of players to bring us to being in the black as far as cap space and out of the red. Right now we’re in the negative, and players like Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, Minkah Fitzpatrick are the big earners that may either be cut or traded to obtain some more draft capital and lower our cap. We also might have to either cut QB Tua Tagovailoa which will be a huge cap hit for us, monstrous really, a dead cap hit of almost $100M. Thanks again Chris Grier, great job! I wouldn’t be surprised if RT Austin Jackson is cut, both his play and availability have been less than average. Once the aforementioned players are gone, we’ll have a really young roster and then with the influx of drafted and undrafted players on the roster, it be even younger.

The dream of receiving compensatory picks for Anthony Weaver were but a pipe dream. Both he and Mike McDaniel had to accept coordinator positions and both of them will be better off that way. It seemed pretty clear that running everything proved to be too much of a task for Mike McDaniel, but he should thrive as OC for the Chargers. Anthony Weaver has yet to be hired but will be interviewing for the second time with the Arizona Cardinals and he may end up their DC. I wish both of them luck, they did their best here, it just wasn’t enough and to be fair, neither of them were helped much by departed GM Chris Grier, who left this roster in a shambles along with being in the red cap wise.

The Senior Bowl is going strong, I plan to watch the practices that I have recorded when I can, I’ve been spending and hour to 3 hours on my days off at the dentist trying to fix my teeth. What a mess! If I never see the dentist again after these issues are fixed, I won’t shed a tear. Of course I’ll have to go every 6 months for cleanings, but procedures, NO THANKS! I know we have plenty of residents here at FMU keeping us abreast of what’s happening, I thank you guys very much for doing that BBM, and others! The draft is where we will be building our foundation, so I believe we might take at least 1 or 2 guys from the Senior Bowl. As to the QB position, as I’ve said many times before, unless QB Tua Tagovailoa has a renaissance, and comes in here chiseled and ready to battle for a starting job, I never, ever want to see him take a snap as Miami Dolphins QB. I don’t care if we cut him or trade him, just get him out! On the off chance he does have a change in attitude, he’s more than welcome to compete, and that doesn’t just mean practices, it means in the actual game, like every play matters, not like in the past that he was far too important to get a first down, his health came first and foremost, far more important than the team or actually WINNING. I’m fine with drafting a QB and letting 2nd year QB Quinn Ewers compete with that QB for the starting job.

    this is an incredible stat

we had the least amount of snaps from players we drafted the Packers had the most

the Dolphins really identified a serious problem and are seeking to turn it around

I don’t k ow much about him – but I serious question firing a GM in almost February. At least we are ahead of did one team in terms of the draft

Nice write, Mike. Good luck with your teeth.

Did Haf choose his Asst. HC?

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, I didn’t know that stat, but I am not surprised. I posted the other day about the Packers draft picks.

In 2022 the packers had 11 draft picks and 7 of the 11 are starters. Also, 3 of those 7 starters are OL who were drafted in the 3rd, 4th and 7th rounds.

  6. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

The Packers have not always hit on all of their picks, but who has? To me the philosophy of building with the draft and supplementing with med level free agents is a solid strategy.

They have been consistently good and even considered contenders in the last few years with, if not the youngest, but one of the youngest rosters in the NFL.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Trading for Parsons was completely out of their realm of operating, and back fired on them this year. Giving up picks is really uncommon for them.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bookman – yeah, Pack thought they were one player away. I think they thought Parsons was going to make more of an impact and then he got hurt and that was that

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Sully comes from good stock. He’ll add some good players, then we’ll see how good the coaching is. I would not be surprised if we’re competing for the playoffs with 2 games to go.

Does anyone else think we might have something in Quinn Ewers? He now has video to watch every play he played. What was good what was bad?

I like him as a potential QB.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

He is worth investing the effort. IMO. Maybe through all of this we hit on a QB without even knowing it.

Excited to see if the new staff sees something in him.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I doubt Quinn Ewers is the franchise QB we’ve been searching for since Marino, but there’s a lot to like about him. IMO, it’s worth developing him with the upside he’s shown to date.

And again, JMO, but I believe he’s shown more upside than Skylar Thompson, Mike White, and Zach Wilson.

I like the idea of taking two LBs early

lots of trades in this mock

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m curious, Pigster… why go with two (or any?) LBs so early when we already have Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson in the fold and under contract for ’26?

We’re talking about 312 total tackles between the two of them last season, and that is absurdly awesome!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Before PFR made a pay-site out of StatHead, I could just go to PFR and tell you exactly how many times in history two LBs combined for over 300 tackles in a single season.

I’m not paying for yet ANOTHER pay-site… it’s getting ridiculous these days!

I CAN tell ya this… it’s quite rare to have two LBs combine for over 300 tackles in a single season.

As such, I do not understand why so many believe we Phins should draft a LB so early in the ’26 Draft.

I’m not dead against it as it pertains to BPA, but I’m trying to find the deeper logic. We don’t suck at LB, but we do at almost every other position (minus DT and RB).

  10. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Over the last 2 seasons, Tyrel Dodson leads the Miami Dolphins in INTs (4). And dating back to 2023, only one Phins player had more INTs than Dodson: Jalen Ramsey (5).

  11. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Both Jordyn Brooks (All-Pro 1st team) and Tyrel Dodson will be 28 years old during the ’26 season… that’s PRIME for a LB. They are a TEAM together, and have been for a very long time.

Again, I don’t understand why the pundits/mocksters/analysts think we should replace them when we have a plethora of other positions to address… some with GAPING holes.

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If ANY pundit/mockster/analyst thinks we’re going to go TE in the 1st round? Never, ever take them seriously… ever again.

They are either clowning us, or really are that foolish.

Ya don’t BUILD or REBUILD through the TE position. I don’t care if it’s Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzo, Jason Swift-Kelce, or whoever.

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    piggy,

I’ve talked about Nwankpa before. I have no idea where he’s projected, but I’ll be shocked if he lasts that long. He’s a good player. I think he’s easily a 3rd rounder. Nice pick but I’m way off if he lasts until the end of the draft.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – You said it yourself in your query to Piggy. Both Brooks and Dodson are signed through ’26, but that’s it. Brooks will be expensive, and Dodson may as well to keep. I agree we should stock the cabinets if either one or both decide to do a Christian Wilkins and decide they want a huge contract

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

That’s another failing I hope we fix with better management. Keeping our picks by signing them earlier. Wilkins could have been signed for much cheaper if they didn’t decide the 5th year was the deciding factor. He was pretty good those other years and was already on the trajectory going into that 5th year. Did Grier never check with coaching or watch any practices? How could he flop so hard with Wilkins. Hunt, AVG, etc, etc? All of our best picks signed elsewhere.

Grier’s biggest failure wasn’t his picks but his failure to keep his own top talent. I can forgive missing on picks because it happens to the best but to not even know how your own guys are doing? How does a talent evaluator miss that badly with dudes he sees for 4 straight years? Just utterly incompetent.

  15. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Piggy, the playing drafted players’ stat was eye-opening. CG should be fired again…lol. 122-175 (estimate) to the nearest team (Dolphins are last) is fucking shocking.

The teams at the top using drafted players (300+ range) are perennial playoff teams! It’s fucking ridiculous….

….and people think he did well….omfg…lol

  18. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Randy, I agree on Safety Xavier Nwankpa. He won’t last that long, not past the 5th. He is one of the bigger safeties in the draft and has good speed. I think he will score well on his RAS. He will do well in interviews as he is a smart and well coached player.

I read where he is being compared to Safety Cole Bishop who was drafted in the late 2nd round by the Bills. Xavier Nwankpa – 6’2, 212 projected 4.45 forty. Cole Bishop – 6’2, 209, ran a 4.45 at the combine.

Xavier Nwankpa is better vs the run than vs pass (IMO) but I like him.

This draft seems to be full of good day 3 safeties. I guess some of these guys get pushed down in various site rankings because of that.

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

BBM’s fav day 3 safeties. I have not checked out all of them but there are a bunch of them. (40 times are projected)

    Zakee Wheatley, PSU, 6’2, 202, 4.42

    Jalon Kilgore, South Carolina, 6’1, 211, 4.48

    Jakobe Thomas, Miami, 6’2, 200, 4.5

    Xavier Nwankpa, Iowa, 6’2, 212, 4.45

There are a bunch of others to be had on day 3 like Keon Saab, Bray Hubbard, Bud Clark, Wydett Williams, Bishop Fitsgerald, Michael Taaffe, Rod Moore, Jalen Stroman, Robert Spear-Jennings, Jalen Catelon and more.

Day 3 is loaded with good safety potential.

    On two LBs early

My main reason for doing it is bc I think it’s a strongest position in the draft and more than anything else I am drafting long term pieces rather than need

I think this year – that’s the way I’m viewing the draft in the first year of this regime.

Mike also made a good point about the possibility expiring contracts.

I love the idea of drafting heavily on defense and taking two LBs early – however that said, the particular combo I drafted probably isn’t such a great combo

I often am selecting Sonny Styles who I would love to draft and I think of as more of a Swiss Army knife than a pure off ball LB

If we added him we can move him around a lot

I’ve been dreaming of a combo of Styles and Josiah Trotter for a little while

And I admit I’ve been a little starry eyed at the idea of have a LB trio of Brooks, Styles and Trotter to go with a young DL

Which leaves a very good player like Dodson out – and I think highly of Dodson so it a way – it doesn’t make sense and you make a good point

That said – I think this draft is really about getting good player for the future and there looks likes a plethora of good LBs

Also, with regards to Trotter – imagine how excited I will be on game day if on defense we play Pork Chop Robinson and Trotter

The first official salary cap projection is out saying it is going to be $301.2 million to $305.7 million.

Spotrac adjusted their #’s and went in the middle projecting $303.45 million. That put our projected cap at 23.1m over the cap. It looks like we will be able to carry over 1.2m after the incentives were deducted and will put us at that 23.1m over mark.

Tim, thanks again for introducing REN and that song “Hi REN” years ago. I have been following him some. Not all his stuff I like but his musical and lyrical genius continues to show up.

I posted his video’s on the “Tale of Jenny and Screech” then the follow up in “Violets Tale” who ended up being the mother to Jenny and Screech way back. He has done several more now with “Vincent’s Tale”, a 9-5 guy who gets drunk every night, gets in a street fight and stabs and kills someone. He blended in “Richards Tale” with that and Richard was the cop who shot and killed Screech in that video years ago and was the same cop to arrest Vincent after committing a murder.

His latest is another “Vincent’s Tale – Starry Night” with Vincent in prison. I thought it was more of his genius. Might need to turn on closed caption as sometimes he is hard for me to catch what he says without going back for a second listen.

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    ———–

I do understand where you’re coming from… there’s logic in that train of thought. I just think the world of Brooks and Dodson and would love to see us re-sign both long-term as they are in their primes.

As a tandem, Brooks and Dodson go back a LONG way, if y’all didn’t already know. That’s something that can’t be taught, only achieved through much experience with one another.

That stated, there’s certainly room to bring in another LB… especially if he’s a STUD/BPA/UPGRADE. I just don’t think we need to bring in TWO LBs early: no need to revamp our LB room being it’s already a strength of our team. JMO

To be clear: when I say LB, I’m talking MLB/ILBs… not EDGE (OLBs). If you’re talking about OLB (EDGE), YES!!! Draft TWO early!!! 😀

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And if you ARE talking about EDGE LBs, don’t discount drafting a natty 4-3 DE (EDGE) early in place of drafting an additional OLB early.

In my ideal world, we’d draft David Bailey as a 4-3 DE (EDGE) and then address OLB (EDGE) before day 2 is over.

The Dolphins are where they are now because they invested far too much money in players whose names were bigger than what they brought to the team. Who is Darth Kader? Lol…is he on our team?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

this is why NFl draft buzz says about him

Best-case scenario, Hood goes late second or early third round to a team that values coverage over run support. His speed and instincts fit perfectly in a zone-heavy scheme where he can see everything develop. Think Tampa 2 or quarters coverage where he’s reading the quarterback and driving on routes. The return ability means he’s active on game day immediately, even if the defensive snaps need to be earned. Worst case, he’s your fourth corner who becomes your nickel by December when injuries hit.

  41. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I was reading some stats about the packers defense last year.

apparently then played zone about 75% of the time relying heavily on the Tampa 2

they rarely blitzed on early downs – on first and 2nd downs they were the 3rd lowest blitzing team in the league

but on 3rd down they were the 3rd highest

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

this kind of reinforces why I think we might take Sonny Styles at 11

a LB who converted from safety is probably pretty ideal in Tampa 2

I was glad to see 2 of my fav OL kick ass in the Senior Bowl in RT Max Iheanachor and OG Keylan Rutledge. I must have missed Dunker out there. The other 2 looked really solid though.

I also heard that Rutledge was told to tone it down in practice as he was pancaking too many people.

  44. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

BBM may have found a new TE he likes more than Joe Royer. I will just have to wait for the combine to get the actual measurements on SMU TE Matthew Hibner. Sports-Reference says 6’4 244, Draft Scout says 6’4 239 and ESPN says 6’5 252 which is what the team website says.

I knew he was a good receiver but heard he did very well blocking all week at the senior bowl. In 2 seasons at SMU, he had 55 rec for 804 yards and 8 TD’s. He looks like he got some good YAC ability.

  45. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

OG Keylan Rutledge had a 99.1% win rate last year and gave up no sacks. RT Max Iheanachor had a 96.4% win rate last year and gave up no sacks. Iheanachor did have 8 penalties though and he only started playing football 3 years ago in community college. He is only going to get better.

  47. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Should be interesting to see how JES handles this roster given how many FAs we are set to have. JES mentioned Ted Thompson as a mentor, but the GM Gutekunst had a slightly different approach for the Packers.

Most of the FA money was spent on defense and O-line and had high ROI, so they spent smart, unlike Grier had a tendency to do.

I would think Rasul Douglas comes back, given he played for Green Bay recently and there’s familiarity with the GM.

Even though I like Ted Hurst, I’d be perfectly fine not drafting any WR before the third round. Just focus on D and O-line.

Agreed, unless Downs is there. I wonder if Rasul would want to go to a contender, given the year he’s had and his age.

The Cardinals plan to hire Mike LaFleur as their head coach, sources tell me and

    @RapSheet

. LaFleur, 38, spent the past three seasons as Sean McVay’s OC with the Rams. Now, Matt LaFleur’s younger brother gets his shot to run the show in Arizona.

Last HC vacancy now filled. Anthony Weaver will not be a HC in this cycle… nor will we receive two 3rd round compensatory picks.

Dolphins now will hire Packers LB Sean Duggan as their defensive coordinator, per sources.

  50. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We quite literally waited to the very last second to see if Ant Weaver would be hired as a HC. Wise to do so, and now the official announcement of a new DC comes a second later.

I wish Ant Weaver all the best in his future endeavors.

Ah, yes. I had forgotten about the Raiders HC vacancy. But as you stated, Klint Kubiak essentially has a deal already in place.

    Brian,

Tell me what YOU think of DDS, being a fellow PSU guy.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I see SO much potential there, yet he lets me down in many ways. I mean, he doesn’t do anything great, yet he’s consistent across the board in both run-Defense and pass-rush prowess… which is, slightly above average.

I’ve got a late 3rd-early 4th round grade on him. He may go earlier than that, based on the prestige of PSU.

  54. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    BBM and Rich,

Question for y’all: what do think of Dallen Bentley, TE, Utah (6’4″, 259 pounds)? One would think he’d be a consistent in-line blocker with his size, but it seems blocking isn’t his thing.

Similarly, one would think he’d suck downfield as a receiver, but he’s made some really nice catches in ’25 for LONG yardage.

Also, one would think he’d be a monster to bring down after the catch… yet I see him going down on first-contact way too often.

“Holy multiplicative inverse, Batman!”, says Robin. I’m obviously talking about Bentley as a late day 3 selection for the TE position. What do you guys think about him?

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I just got up from my nap.

I have liked Bentley as a day 3 TE. He is a reliable receiving TE. I think he can be one who is tough to tackle. If I remember correctly, he just has no juke to him and can’t make a guy miss. DB’s are always coming in to take out his legs because he is a big dude and that’s tough for him to fight through.

That’s why I like Royer over him and always take Royer or Josh Cuevas late day 3. Bentley and Josh Cuevas are very close to the same type of TE. Cuevas is 6’3, 252 and is an okay blocker, can run through some tackles but is slower than Bentley.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Did you check out the SMU TE I posted up the board? He wasn’t on my radar until I was reading reviews on him doing well blocking at the senior bowl. I thought he was just a receiving TE but I guess I was wrong, he can do it all.

  55. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think we make an offer to Dulcich but I think his agent may have him hold out and hit free agency.

Also, these draft guys who have us taking Sadiq in the 1st are clueless. He is a physical presence but they are putting him on a pedestal with Brock Bowers and Tyler Warren and I just don’t see it. In 2 games vs Indiana he had 7 rec for 50 yards and 0 TD’s. In the 3 playoff games, he had 11 rec for 70 yards and 0 TD’s. He’s not a game changer to be taken in the 1st round, IMO.

Don’t get me wrong, I think he is the whole package with speed and he’s one of the better blocking TE’s as well. I just don’t think he is worth our first 2 picks.

Watch, he will probably explode and BBM will eat crow. lol

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Let rephrase that, I do think Sadiq would be worth our second at #43. It’s just with all these RT’s, CB’s and Safeties, he might not be BPA for us at #43. At least not for me with him not being a huge game changer like Bowers or Warren.

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

BBMike, I saw your post about Ren. I haven’t been following him recently. I’ll have to check him out again.

  57. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We all know when a new regime comes in especially both GM and HC there will be a lot of turnover. We have a pretty good draft to get things going. I don’t expect us to be big players in FA. But I do expect us to sign a lot of UDFAs.

  58. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I really dig that Haf is a big fan of the Shanahan offense. It’s evolved over the years but the core principles of running the football and play action while spreading the field both laterally and vertically remains. Slowick probably won’t change the language because McDaniel’s offense comes from the same tree. That’s a positive to hit the ground running.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, I like that and could also see Slowick simplifying the O a little. Instead of the geek boy from Yale who could have been too complex where everything had to work just perfectly.

  59. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

M13, I keep forgetting to mention him and have only taken him in a few mocks but my day 3 “Jackson Hawes” TE in this draft is Sam Roush from Stanford. He’s a solid TE at 6’6, 259 and is the best day 3 blocker in the draft (IMO), a good drive blocker. He’s also a better receiver than Hawes was coming out of college but does have some drops. He’s a true inline TE and does a great job selling the run then running delayed routes to an open spot. I would put him in the same boat as Bentley and Cuevas but a much better blocker then the both of them just not as good of hands. He’s not going to give you any seem routes either.

  60. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    M13,

I have taken DDS in most of my mocks. He has these periods where is is unstoppable, but then is inconsistent. I would definitely take a flier on him in the fifth if he’s there.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I always take him in the 3rd. I think he has that upside to up his game. I do see what you are saying though. At times, you can see him playing like an animal. You can see it in his face he gets so hyped/twitched up. Then, at times in the game you are wondering where DDS is when you need him. I just like he passion he plays with. I think someone can bring that out of him to bring it every play. Plus, he’s good vs the run also.

Give me Edge’s DDS and Derrick Moore back to back with our 2 late 3rd round picks and don’t think twice about it.
