The two guys above are very busy working on one of their most important undertakings together as GM and Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins, their very first NFL Draft. This would be the case for any new GM and Head Coach, but for these two and specifically for the Miami Dolphins, it’s exponentially more important due to the roster needs, and the cap restrictions former GM Chris Grier has left the Miami Dolphins with. Both are well aware that they will need to build this team back through the draft, so while this exercise is always important, both Sully and Haf know they need to hit on many of their picks because these players will be the foundation of the team.
I have to admit, that whenever I get to listed to either Jeff Hafley or Jon Eric Sullivan, I come away feeling positive and impressed, and very hopeful that they are up to the task ahead of them, and a huge task it is. Despite the fact that they will get a mulligan for this season, they are building a team in their image. What makes me so optimistic is hearing over and over and strenuously reinforced, that the two men tasked with this rebuild are completely in lockstep in doing this. Now this doesn’t mean that they make each other redundant, they might have differing opinions on certain things, but both completely respect each other and are completely willing to work together to accomplish their goal. When I hear HC Jeff Hafley talking to Mike Florio, and why he came here and took the job of Head Coach for the Miami Dolphins, he spoke of “Alignment”, and he meant alignment with new GM Jon Eric Sullivan, the opportunity to join him and the Miami Dolphins organization. This was once a proud NFL Franchise, and these two gentlemen seem hellbent on making that once again a reality in South Florida and the NFL.
As both Sully and Haf are at the NFL Combine right now, the underwear olympics are in full throttle with the DL and LB’ sand K’s already doing their part. Today, DL and LB’s will do their bench press while DB’s and TE’s will do their workouts such as 40’s and other drills. Lord knows we need players that will come in and not only compete for a starting job but be successful if they are drafted. We truly have so many holes you wouldn’t be wrong if you said the most important position is EDGE, CB, OL, S, TE. All of the above are important, and since the likelihood is that QB Tua Tagovailoa will either be traded or cut, you can add QB to the list, being we have only QB’s Quinn Ewers and Cam Miller on the roster, and once again, very little cap money to spend on a QB. Despite the persistent talk of QB Malik Willis to Miami, I just don’t buy any of it. Whether the salary rumors are completely accurate or not, Malik Willis can probably get paid NOW, and like most players, he will go where that can be done. I just don’t believe we’re in any position to once again dole out $25-30M annually at the QB position right now.
There were some impressive performances yesterday at the combine, a few EDGE players and LB’s ran very well to help themselves, notably EDGE Arvell Reese 4.46, EDGE David Bailey 4.50, and LB’s Sonny Styles 4.46 and Kaleb Elarms-Orr 4.47. All these players mentioned will be doing their bench press today, and that will further give a picture of just what kind of athlete these players are, besides of course the more important game tape they have accumulated during their college careers. That is first and foremost, though we all fall in love with the elite 40 times and 10 yard shuttles and broad jumps and vertical leaps. As Randy pointed just a day or so ago, 2022 2nd RD pick LB Channing Tindall. 4.47 40, 42″ vertical leap, 10’9 Broad Jump, all very impressive, equal to the best performers this year, but his play tape was so far below all the best of this year’s draft and even his own draft in 2022, and just think how important is was for us to make a strong selection in that draft when we had no 1st RD pick, and only 4 total picks, a 2, 4, and two 7’s. Randy reminded of us how great an athlete Tindall was, but how lost he was on the field. Listening to Hafley describe what a Miami Dolphins player will be, Tindall was the complete opposite. He wants players that played football, love football, and players that will last in any climate and all 4 quarters of the game. I can’t wait to see how we do!

I know he has great measurements for an OT. Miller has been one of my targets at #43. Just trying to figure out if he lasts to that pick with his measurables.
Word is they like Austin Jackson and want him around but they want to do an incentive laden restructure based on availability. This would clear cap this year but would also give him the chance to make all the money he was due in the form of incentive bonuses that would come out of the 2027 cap.
My understanding is this restructure would also include extending him with the same lower cap hit but incentive laden for how many games he is available for. This would be a smart deal for both.
We still need to draft an OT though. Need depth. I still think it is a top priority.
As far as QB, after Mendoza and Simpson, I group them all together as a crap shoot. Therefore, don’t draft one until pick #111 at the earliest. I just hope and pray it is not Beck.
Do we know what sort of offense we’ll be running yet?
The reason I’d take Ioane at #11, is I think he is a guy who can transform your OL. I think you could say he is the best player in this draft. He has a chance to be a multi all pro sort of guy. Jackson immediately becomes better next to him. He helps cover some of the deficiencies you have with Brewer’s size. He raises the level of all boats.
Unless he gets hurt, I just see zero downside. Reports are he’s impressing teams in meetings, as well, which always helps. He is a clear level above guys like Rutledge or Dunker. Guys have him rated in that range too, so he’s really not even a reach.
I wouldn’t hate Ioane at 11, although I’d live to trade down 5-9 spots and grab him if possible.
I haven’t watched Ioane – but I read that he’s not very mobile and more of the dominant in a phone booth kind of OL
so that doesn’t sound like a good fit for us
I feel like if we went CB at 11, we would have to look edge in the 2nd round
and then look at WR, OL, LB, S, TE a little later

Overton was expected to showcase his athletic traits, but his combine numbers told a different story. Clocking a 4.87-second 40-yard dash at 274 pounds with a 1.7-second 10-yard split, Overton’s times were underwhelming for his position while skipping the broad jump. He’s currently not a threat off the edge due to his lack of burst and explosion.
Malachi Fields, WR
Fields, standing at 6-foot-4 and 218 pounds, had the physical tools to excite scouts, but his combine outing was a disappointment. His 4.61-second 40-yard dash was slower than anticipated, and he struggled with acceleration and wasted motion throughout his routes.

Do we actually know what sort of offense we’ll be running? Our Center has been our movement OL in our zone scheme. We haven’t asked our guards to do a ton of long pulls. I don’t get the concerns about Ioane. Yeah, I’d like to see him play around 315 but other than that he’s a nasty man mover. This offense needs some nasty…a lot of nasty actually.
Everybody gives lip service to how important OL is but that always goes away at draft time. Lol

I had looked at Carter. His issues were issues that would be even worse at guard. He has the size, but he plays way too high…bad leverage. I also don’t see him delivering blows. I wouldn’t say he plays soft…but he plays like Jonah plays….kind of uncommitted. I don’t know what has gone on with him since college though.

The 2 guys who have grown on me post combine for day 3 picks are QB Cole Payton and DT/DE Kaleb Proctor. Proctor along with Durant were combine freaks. Playing on a small FCS school against what was a practice game for then #3 LSU, Proctor had 5 tackles and 2 sacks vs LSU. He’s 6’2, 291, ran a 4.79 forty and 1.69 split.
They are not the only 2 post combine who have grown on me. I meant to say the 2 small school players who have grown on me.
CB Demmings is small school but I was on to him pre combine. He’s a stud, IMO.

If we’re going to run the sort of offense we discussed, defenses are usually going to be playing closer to the LOS. That means your WR are dealing with safeties more often. Small guys can struggle in that scenario. A guy like Waddle has the speed to get behind coverage too, but it’s all those other hits he will take that will add up. Smaller guys just have a harder time dealing with tight coverages. It’s science. Lol

Even though Cole Payton is growing on me, I think I still favor Sawyer Robertson. Robertson kind of surprised me with his 9.80 RAS score.

Most of us recognize the fact Austin Jackson was at his best working next to the 6’5″, 323 pound junkyard dog. Further, I find it very important to have bigger Guards when the smaller Aaron Brewer is manning Center: more push for those short-yardage sits.
And that WAS the idea last season when we brought in “3-play James (Daniels)” and moving up to draft Big Jonah… who was arguably the worst O-Line in all of the NFL last season. Ughhh!
Additionally, we’re still going to be running a Shanahan-esque system on Offense: ZBS/OBS, and our RBs (especially Achane) were drafted for the system. To mimic our 2023 O-Line would be… VERY acceptable.
I want the next Robert Hunt drafted this season. Unfortunately, Hunt didn’t participate in the Combine or his pro day due to a groin injury… so we don’t have his 40, VJ, BJ, bench, etc. However, he did measure with his above height and weight, along with 33.5 arms and 10.75 hands.
No, we don’t need a physical carbon-copy of Robert Hunt, obviously. But, there’s a few guys who could fill the Robert Hunt role after day 1, especially in Round 2… y’all know the names.
What I’m saying is that the 2nd round is going to be our sweet spot to draft an O-Lineman, particularly a stud Guard.
Now, if we take Olaivavega Ioane in the first round (whether it be @ R1P11 or in a trade down scenario), our 2nd round strategy could/would probably change.
At the end of the day and prior to the Draft, we’ll see what happens with Austin Jackson. He’s still young, has yet to reach his apex (IMO), and hopefully he’ll accept a new, incentive-laden contract of sorts.
It would not be ideal to start over at RT, especially with the news that Larry Borom might not be back with us. Borom actually did alright last season in Austin Jackson’s absence with injury.

One last thing, regarding our QB situation. Just like Tua, Kyler Murray is going to end up cut by the Cardinals. And just like we will be having to pay for cutting Tua, the Cardinals will be having to pay for cutting Kyler. Both Kyler and Tua are already PAID for by their respective current teams.
What does that mean? It means Kyler (like Tua) could be had for veteran minimal $$$, unless a bidding war ensues.
Do ya spend BIG $$$ (which we don’t have!) to sign Malik Willis via FA? Do ya TRADE for Anthony Richardson? Nah, ya sign the cheapest QB who has the highest upside.
Do NOT be surprised if we end up signing Kyler Murray on the cheap this season — AGAIN — so long as we don’t get into a bidding war over vet’s minimum, that ends up costing MAD $$$.
I’m not the biggest fan of Kyler Murray, being he seems to be more into playing video games than studying a playbook… or so it’s been reported (probably factual).
Gotta be honest, Kyler would be a most intriguing option on the cheap (think the Stealers* when they brought in Russell Wilson on the cheap, but Kyler’s MUCH younger than when Russell became a Stealer* late in his career). He’d provide QB competition for young Quinn Ewers, he may (or may not) rejuvenate his career getting out of the desert, and I all but guarantee we’ll STILL draft a QB early in the ’27 NFL Draft.
ALL bets are off if we continue to build our O-Line with stout and taller O-Linemen. Kyler is even shorter than Tua… but Kyler still has elite wheels to scramble into throwing lanes like Russell Wilson always has, dating back to Russell’s days at Wisconsin.

Sucks Texans traded OT Titus Howard to the Browns. Howard was the 5th best RT in the NFL and they traded him for a 5th round pick. That’s just stupid.
That means they are most likely to target a RT at pick #28. In that range, it’s likely going to be one of the guys I like in Blake Miller or Iheanachor.
Rumor has it that Derek Carr will unretire and be traded to the Jets.

I’m no fan of Kyler Murray (size, durability, questionable work ethic), but for vet minimum $$$, I’m not sure we could do better regarding our cap situation.
Kyler would be competition for Quinn Ewers, a reclamation project with low risk and high reward in a rebuilding season, and his acquisition would keep us from spending a day 2 draft pick on a QB: I want to go BIG on QB in the ’27 Draft, and focus on meat & potatoes this draft.
Just sayin’, he could possibly be on our radar and he may want to continue living in warm weather, but tax-free in FL.
I’m not advocating we sign him, nor have I any insight as to whether Sully and/or Hafner — or even Murray himself — would even be interested. The prospect of buying low on a ‘decent’ NFL QB still in his prime is intriguing, nonetheless.

Ah, man… right now, that’s so difficult to predict who “could be there at #11”. Even without trades factored in, I’m not sure there’s a general consensus as to who goes in the top-5, post-Combine: it’s all over the place.
But you said favorite…
1- David Bailey (he’s NOT going to fall to us… I think?)
2- Until we get Delane and McCoy’s pro day numbers (and if McCoy is 100% healthy), I’ll choose both of them… with an edge to Delane for not having a prior ACL injury.
3- Sonny Styles
If Sonny Styles is there we’re taking him.

I’m not a fan of Faulk….if we are looking to add pass rushers. His get off is just bad. Slow hips aren’t something you can fix. His effectiveness dwindles quickly the further he is from the center. Good size. Big frame. Looks like a guy who plays hard. But man…I’m not sure his impact goes up at the next level where every tenth of a second matters.
😂 of course you don’t. The guy is 20 years old and already a good football player. I’m looking at the player in 2028. He’s not a pure edge guy but plays the run well and will provide a solid pass rush being moved around. Chop has to become our Von Miller. Faulk is more like Chris Jones at an early age.

I’m not big on Keldric Faulk, JMO. Why? I don’t view him as an impact player. He reminds me of another Jared Odrick as a very (too) safe pick, but with very little impact on the game.
That’s not to say Sully and Hafner don’t want safe trench players, either… so there’s that. But if you’re talking about our 1st round pick, I feel we can do a lot better. Again, JMO.

I agree with ya, once again. I think our young interior D-Line looks really good. We need EDGEs who can actually get to the QB with the losses of Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, and the regression of the Chopster.
We need SPEED on the EDGEs, IMO.
Speed on the EDGE, coupled with someone who can set the edge, will go a long way in improving this Defensive roster.

IF we can get a 2nd or 3rd rounder for Minkah prior to the Draft, I’m willing to move up for David Bailey if he falls to say, R1P7. No way am I moving all the way up to the top-5… we’ve got too many roster spots to fill.
Best bet for David Bailey to fall at this point? Somebody buys the hype on Ty Simpson and takes him in the top-5. Maybe the Brownies*?

Bailey looks like a pass rush specialist who really isn’t interested in stopping the run. Is he a 3 down guy? I’m not interested in spending a high first round pick on a guy who isn’t on the field for 3 downs.
Yes, Bailey is a 3-down guy, Brother. And that’s exactly why some are projecting him to go as high as R1P2 to the stej. He’s not a 1-trick pony.
He’s gonna go top 5 because he attacks the QB. QB, protect the QB, rush the QB and defend where the QB wants to go with the ball. The premium positions.

If you say so. I sure haven’t seen video evidence that Bailey can be an effective run defender. Quicker than shit but he don’t want no part of slamming into OL from what I’ve seen.

Back to Faulk. Hey, you might be very right about him! I’m just sayin’, in the 1st round, I want to see us draft a game-changer. Yes, I’m very high on Mansoor Delane, Jermod McCoy, and Sonny Styles… in no particular order.

David Bailey registered in the upper-echelon of run-defense for EDGE defenders, according to PFF. And, I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

We have the quick twitch edge rusher already in Chop. 3rd year player who just turned 23. Get physical up front.
What happened to Chop last season? AND, we got stronger up front via the Draft last season.
He was used as an off ball LB and held his own. His speed and ability to rush the passer is still there. Keep building on it.
JMO, it was abuse to use Chop as an off-ball LB when we already had STUDS in Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson (312 tackles COMBINED!!!).
Perhaps Anthony Weaver shat the bed on that, using Chop as an off-ball LB, when we NEEDED more pressure coming off the edge.
Chop wins when he’s in space. If he isn’t, he doesn’t. They tried asking him to do more, and he struggled. If they are going to play more Wide 9, it will help Chop more than anybody.
I think just going by bodies, we need more edge guys. I think our IDL is pretty set right now. How good they can be is still in question but the guys are there.

I’m really looking hard at Emmanuel Pregnon and Gennings Dunker as our 2nd round pick.

Pregnon is an interesting prospect. I get a little nervous with guys who switch teams a lot.
I hear ya on that. Nevertheless, Pregnon can MOVE for a cat his size.
Pregnon has yield only 1 (ONE) sack in 2,576 snaps in his college career.
He primarily plays LG, but he can and has played RG.
93.0 zone grade from PFF.

Dunker offers a bit more versatility. While I don’t think he’s a long-term NFL tackle, I do believe he could do some spot duty there if you needed him to with a lot of experience.
