Can Sully and Haf make Dolphins exciting again?

The 2026 Miami Dolphins are going into the 2026 NFL Draft knowing they need to hit on multiple picks. While that in and of itself can put pressure on the people responsible, the scouting department, the GM (Jon Eric Sullivan), and the Head Coach (Jeff Hafley), the expectations are low for wins and losses in 2026. Despite that, there is absolutely pressure on the trifecta mentioned above to improve the roster and right the ship as far as the NFL Salary Cap is concerned. I would expect more trades, shedding more big contracts, which is an unfortunate by product of irresponsibility by the former GM Chris Grier. Saying Ross wanted to win now does not excuse many of the mistakes Grier made to get us where we are now and that’s a big part of why he, and his scouting department are both gone.

We talk about the draft here quite often, and many of you post your Mock Drafts here often. Don’t take this wrong way, I know you guys know your stuff, but I laugh at nearly every single mock draft posted with trades, where the outcome is our Dolphins netting 12 or 13 picks from 8. No offense, but that’s just silly stuff. It’s not always easy to trade back, and it’s hard to trade back multiple times in one draft. These guys are trying to find players that can help this team immediately, plug and play guys for at least the first 3-5 picks, and managing that after trading back is probably an exercise in futility. As far as trading up, I 100% DO NOT think we’ll be doing that. Our number of picks are at a premium, and the consensus is this is not a top heavy draft, there are no real superstars in the top 10 that are significantly better than the players right behind them from 11-20. Yes, there are some players that are head and shoulders better than the rest at their position like QB Fernando Mendoza and RB Jeremiyah Love, but even that’s debatable. Some folks think the gap between QB’s Mendoza and Simpson is closer than others think. What I’m trying to point out is that I believe it could be very difficult to find a trade partner to move back, and with the amount of needs we have at so many positions, a trade up would be foolish.

Addressing the needs comes down to the most impactful positions of the game, which starts with the QB, and then the guys that can get to the QB on defense and those that can defend the receivers of the QB and just as important, the guys that protect the QB. In other words, QB, DE, OL and CB. That doesn’t mean that the other positions aren’t important, but those are the premium ones, and by OL, specifically the bookends, LT and RT, and by EDGE, depending on the scheme, either DE or OLB. Pass rushers that will disrupt the QB, and hopefully sack the QB, not just get into the vicinity as our age old discussion has raged on about pressures and sacks. If there was ever a poster boy for the argument that pressures are not even close to being as important as sacks, former Dolphins OLB Jaelan Phillips would be that guy. Phillips never finished a season with double digit sack totals but have 20 QB hurries in his best season in 2022 and for pressures, 36 in 2022, and believe it or not, 35 last season for two teams combines, Dolphins and Eagles, 18 with us, 17 for the Eagles. Always close, but rarely there. 116 “pressures” and 28 sacks 63 games. Ugh!

Which position we choose in RD 1 will obviously depend on who is still available. My feeling is we desperately need a legit starting CB, so my feeling is if either Mansoor Delane or even Jermod McCoy is there, one of them is coming off the board to us. Depending on the medicals with McCoy who didn’t play the 2025 season due to an ACL tear, I would hope for Delane, but McCoy is a fine CB who would be a starter here if healthy. Reuben Bain is a tenacious player who doesn’t test especially well and has very short arms for an edge rusher, which means if an OT gets his hands on him first with a longer reach, it’s hard for him to get free. That being said, Bain’s play in the playoff was excellent, and this against some top competition. Play tape is always king, and despite some rumors that he will fall to us, I expect him off the board in the top 8 picks.

Now to the other controversial debate, the QB position. I have made it clear that I don’t want us to spend big money on a free agent QB. I know Sully and especially Haf, know QB Malik Willis better than anyone else in the NFL. Haf had Willis run the scout team so the defense would be prepared for every QB they faced that week, and Willis simulated the style of that QB. If it were a $10M per season type of thing and they felt strongly that he could be a plus starter here for our Dolphins, that’s one thing. Coming off HUGE mistake giving a QB a ridiculous contract for no good reason, namely Tua’s 4 YR/$212.4M nightmare contract, I just can’t see following that up with a $30M per season flier on QB Malik Willis who was 2-1 with the Packers and 1-2 with the Titans. I’m more than happy to go with QB Quinn Ewers in 2026, but I would also like to draft a QB in this draft, and due to the fact that we happen to have three 3rd RD picks, I believe the 3rd RD would be the place to snatch QB Drew Allar. Evaluations in general do not favor him as an immediate starter. What they all say, however, is he has the prototype build, size, athleticism and arm strength. I understand that those things alone do not make a great QB. Courage, intelligence, tenacity, comprehension all combine to collectively become an “It” factor, and up to this point, Allar has yet to show he has “It”.

There are a lot of factors that can contribute to that, and an easy one is to look at the talent that surrounds the QB, and the coaching. Penn State did not give Allar elite receivers and they changed the Offensive Coordinator 3 times during his tenure. You either accept those as valid excuses or you don’t, but those are definitely negative contributors to how the QB plays. Some elite QB’s can overcome those things no doubt, but we’ve seen QB’s in the NFL struggle in their first contract with their draft team and then go on to have success in their second, third or even 4th stop. Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and Geno Smith come to mind. One thing you can’t coach into a player is arm strength, size, and athleticism. If you’re 6’0 215, you can’t coach them to be 6’5 230 with a rocket arm. Have I been influenced by what I’ve seen in New England with Drake Maye? No question there. Drake Maye was a better prospect coming out, but still had that boom or bust label. I’d be much more comfortable taking Allar in RD 3 to see what we can do with him. Obviously, the QB class of 2027 will be better, but keep in mind they said that about 2026 last season. Dante Moore decided to go back and Arch Manning did as well. You never really know how things will shake out, and if our guys feel they can develop Allar, I’d be thrilled to have him here.

OK, now you guys can get back to your 15 pick (Tradey pants) Mock Drafts! Love you guys and much respect to all of you!

I heard we’re looking to extend Achane, Brewer and Brooks to build on.

On offense upgrade the OL and add some bigger WRs, and on defense keep adding players to improve every room. We have a lot of young DL and DBs. Competition is good. Keep pushing that.

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We also signed 3 CB’s today. They just reported we signed CB Alex Austin whoever that is. lol

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ben Sims is a potential replacement for Hill. Sims is more of a check down guy but does have the speed to run a seem route, 6’5, 254, 4.59 forty.

I’m extremely pissed off about Bradley Chubb signing with the Bills. Anyone hear what happened earlier to make it happen?

    This happened…

    @FieldYates

Corrected number: the Bills restructured the contract of Josh Allen, creating $12M of 2026 salary cap space.

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We signed 3 CB, 2 Safety, 1 Edge/OLB, 1 DT and 1 TE today just today.

One of best fits of free agency so far: NFL INT leader S Kevin Byard to Patriots Byard decided to reunite with Mike Vrabel over a return to Chicago. He gives Patriots a new lead ballhawk + vocal leader to take them over the top.

Brewer is going to be the tricky one. Why? Because Tyler Lindenbaum reset the Center market.

Tyler Linderbaum signed a record-setting 3-year, $81 millioncontract with the Las Vegas Raiders in March 2026, making him the NFL’s highest-paid center at $27 million annually. The deal includes $60 million in total guarantees and a $20 million signing bonus.

Do you guys think Styles lasts until 11?

  11. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

“Lobster Guy” (still LMFAO!!! 😆 ) Kyle ‘Crabman’ Crabbs believes we signed LB Josh Uche for his quick-twitch ability out in space (Wide-9) in obvious pass-rushing sits on the edge (DE).

Look for the same via the Draft. I’m tellin’ ya, Bro! 😉

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I know y’all don’t want to hear it, and I acknowledge that you’re probably 95% correct. But IF either David Bailey or Sonny Styles fall to a certain point (I’ll say R1P8: Saints), I’d have a very difficult time not trying to trade up before they’re gone… and that’s especially if Delane Mansoor is already off the board.

95% of every Draft, I’d easily trade down a few spots. But to land a BLUE-CHIP talent like Bailey or Styles could be franchise-changing. JMO

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And it wouldn’t be a “Grier-move”, either. To move up a mere 3 spots in the 1st round (for a blue-chip talent) would probably only cost us one of our three 3rd rounders.

Anyway, I don’t believe it’s going to happen, so there’s that.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And one more thing: IF it would cost us more than 1 of our three 3rd rounders, I’d be against it.

  13. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The 3rd CB we signed today, Alex Austin, was with the Pats as a backup the last 3 seasons and started 6 games over that span including 2 starts last year. He was originally a 7th round draft pick of the Bills in 2023.

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We now have 11 CB’s on the roster. That position group is going to be a battle.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Indeed! And so long as Rasul Douglas goes unsigned after June 1st (when we get the savings from Bradley Chubb), we may bring him back into the fold.

Remember, Douglas was a Packer for 2 1/2 years, amassing 10 INTs. Sully knows him well, though he never played a snap for Hafley.

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Of the 10 players who have been reported that we signed since Monday, none are OL.

  16. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Well more than a month before the Draft, with pro days coming.

SAFEST bet? If possible, trade down from R1P11 just a bit (maybe get another 3rd rounder?) and select Vega Ioane, G, PSU.

I’m not trying to sound like I’m all over the place regarding the Draft, but seriously, there’s more than one way to skin a cat. We could be aggressive (trade up), we could be passive (allowing the board to come to us), or we could be the best of both worlds by trading down just a bit in the 1st round… so as to accumulate more picks and have the ability to trade up (or not) back into the 2nd round.

The options are nearly unlimited… just hit on the picks!

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, everyone uses the wide 9. Chop lines up there often. Off tackle speed guy.

  18. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’d like to trade back and get some more draft capital for next year and this year, but would also like that blue chip guy if he’s there. We’re definitely not one player away from competing so I would lean more towards trading back given the deal is good and we can still grab someone good in trading back. Lots of studs have been drafted in the 20-32 range, especially in the secondary, defense, and O-line where we have the biggest needs.

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Kirk Cousins
    Tua Tagovailoa
    David Njoku
    Wyatt Teller
    Dre Greenlaw
    Nate Hobbs
    Bradley Chubb
    Jonathan Allen

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Crazy that we can even field a roster.

Right now our dead cap for 2026 is 89.6m. Once the post 6/1 releases on Tua and Chubb kick in, our 2026 dead cap will be around 156m. Almost 52% of our cap space this season will be dead money.

It will actually be a little higher than that. Any player we sign to the 90 man roster who gets a signing bonus but doesn’t make the 53 man roster, their signing bonus also becomes dead money for 2026.

  35. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

BBM I could not care less about them having 2 kickers on the 90.

They broke my care by signing Willis for stupid money and not having a QB competition. THERE WILL NOT BE ONE, I DON’T CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK! You pay a guy 20M a year and he is the starter. period.

Evidence so far is these guys are as big of clowns as Grier was. Handing out void years like candy again, giving a QB that has done NOTHING 20+ mil per season and anointing him in the process.

I don’t care about drafting a kicker. I just hated making our old kicker so highly paid and gifting him the job for years. With two on the 90 at least there will be competition.

  36. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Willis IS the starter. No competition will be allowed. BET ME

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wasn’t replying to you. It was based on what a few guys were talking about with lots of young players competing for jobs. I was writing this before I saw your posts.

I don’t have a problem with the Malik Willis signing though. The new regime signed him. Nobody knows yet if he will pan out. He has talent.

  40. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I heard we’re looking to extend Achane, Brewer and Brooks to build on.

If they extend Brewer and Brooks, I wonder how they are going to do that.

Brooks and Brewer already have void years in ’27, ’28 & ’29 included in their current deals. They can only push out to ’30 at this point per the rules.

They already have $8,649,000 in void years over three seasons for Brewer

They already have $5,786,501 in void years over three seasons for Brooks

ALL of that money accelerates into the current cap if they are cut or traded. (or retire)

How do you think they handle the 14.2M in void years already handed out if they extend these guys again??

the good news? We only have 6 million in void years accounted for 2030….(as far out as they can legally push at this point!)

Waddle for 3M and Sieler for 2.9M

I can’t believe Sully already started with giving out void years again!! They haven’t even gotten the cap under control yet and he is doing the same stupid accounting that got the last guy in trouble!

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Stupid Raiders didn’t do any of the teams a favor by overpaying for their new center. I think it will only hurt us trying to extend Brewer.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Damned if we do damned if we don’t

the hole void year thing is a fuck fuck game. It DOES NOT save cap space. ALL 8.6M of Brewer’s void years hits the team next season. It only looks like it is spread out until he actually becomes a FA next year. Then BAM!

We need to draft a Center THIS draft let Brewer play out his really bad deal and then cut bait.

Unfortunately the same goes with Brooks. ALL of his 5.7M hit next year.

The only feasible way to extend both guys is to give them restructures that hit the cap all at once because increasing the amount of the void year contracts or adding more void years is only smoke and mirrors. All that money accelerates to the current cap year when they hit the end of their non-void year allotment.

Yes, I hear ya. The general and overall consensus is that this Draft is less than ideal overall. It’s deep at a few positions, but in general, not so much.

This is not a draft of top tier talent in most areas but very solid players all the way to the 4th round.

They could trade down to get more picks in that 3rd round range or they can move up for someone and use one of those 3rds to grab a guy. It’s going to be interesting.

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For the record I’m into following players not the salary cap. This goes on every year. We know we’re not signing big FAs this year. Okay but many of you have been doing mock drafts since like November. Why if it doesn’t really matter?

I wouldn’t be surprised if we drafted a WR at #11 because he was the BPA. We’re not supposed to be in the running for the Super Bowl anyway, so why does everything have to be a need this year?

We all know where we need upgrades but if we’re not going to be very good anyway why does it matter who we draft this year?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So long as we select the BPA at a position of need (we have many), we should be just fine.

Unless we already have a stacked team (we obviously don’t!), I would never draft a TE in the 1st round. Kenyon Sadiq is OUT for me.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

that’s exactly what I meant, when I said we can’t afford pick 11

we’ll get 20m from the June 1st cut of Chubb, so we have the cap, but…

I LIKE that analogy… to Steve McNair. And now that you’ve mentioned it, I can see it, too.

We shall see. Hoping for the very best out of Malik.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I always pictured McNair taller than 6’2″, so yeah that’s a good comparison, so far in the Willis career, he’s got many levels of growth ahead of him, including how he performs after the league figures him out and takes away his bread and butter

Most of the top QBs these days can run for 1st downs or more; Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson etc. Even Sam Darnold and Drake Maye can run a bit. The game has changed.

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, Willis has been handed the keys as our starting QB. No more excuses about anything. You’re either good or you’re not. Ewers just keeps working and waits for his opportunity. It’s not a bad situation to start the new regime.

OH, I couldn’t stand it not doing a trade down mock. It was killing me! So much that I ended up trading down 3 times, 11 to 13, 13 to 23, then 23 to 28. lol

Actually, I didn’t value any of the players available at those picks so I traded down each time. I decided to double down on big WR’s.

  71. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Other than both being stocky runners…. I’m not sure I’m seeing McNair.

Willis just needs to play within his own skills. Make safe plays. Don’t turn the ball over. Ball control. I don’t wanna see any hero ball. I hope he throws about 15-20 times a game.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hero ball has new meaning these days on the running side of things, you need to be able to get 4th qtr 1st downs

I get what you’re saying though

We’ve been at a huge disadvantage vs Buffalo, because we couldn’t pick up 4th qtr 1st downs enough with the limited Tua

  72. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I hope we can get Nwankpa at #227. I think that would be a complete steal.

Malik didn’t run the 40 at the combine, it was reported as an unofficial 4.37, didn’t know he was that fast, it changes my perception a little

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Couldn’t find much other than it was reported he ran a 4.37 his sophomore year in college. Draftbuzz is showing he ran a 4.42. Still faster than I thought.

Also, Tua measured at 6’0 217. Willis measured at 6’0 and a half inch, 223. Not much different but Willis is built thicker.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Willis didn’t participate at the NFL combine, but he was there interviewing.

The type of person Willis is as he didn’t have any money (yet). He was excited at all the free Nike clothes he got from the Nike Suite at the combine. When leaving the center, he came across a homeless lady and her son. He didn’t have any money to give her, so he gave her and the son all his free Nike stuff.
