Malik Willis becomes 24th QB since Marino

As per usghe with the Dolphins fanbase, there is never a 100% approval rating for any move this franchise makes. I know Rock just hates this move, and I bristled at it as well. I’m not going to kill Sully and Haf before they even get started, but let’s all be honest about something here. These 2 guys came here preaching “competition” at every position, including QB. THERE WILL BE NO QB COMPETITION. Malik Willis will be the 24th Miami Dolphins QB since Dan Marino retired back in 1999. Sully and Haf just handed Malik Willis the reins to the team and it won’t matter if Quinn Ewers throws a TD on every pass in practice and Preseason games, Malik Willis is the starting QB . I genuinely have a problem with that. Competition is healthy, and the fact that so many times in our history we provided no competition at the QB position, it’s a reason we failed. With Tua, we took it to the insane extreme of not only not having competition, but handing him a franchise QB contract before he deserved it, we didn’t even let him compete for himself by playing him on his 5th year contract.

Well, now that Malik Willis is the QB, we just signed a couple of weapons for him. WR Tutu Atwell comes over from the Rams and we re-signed one of our TE’s from last season, TE Greg Dulcich. We’ve also re-signed RT Austin Jackson, and apparently, the ugly VOID YEARS of contracts continue. It’s like getting a new credit card to pay off current credit card debt. Fantastic, I wonder if Chris Grier left behind his “Handbook to Create Cap Hell in the NFL”. In just one week so many things happened. Tua signed with Atlanta so now he’s their problem. We signed Malik Willis and now he’s our problem, or hero, we’ll see which one. We re-signed LB Willie Gay, K Riley Patterson, and oddly enough, also signed K Zane Gonzalez. Apparently, K is one place where we truly need competition. We signed a pass rusher OLB Joshua Uche (Ooh-shay) from the Eagles. We re-signed DT Matthew Butler. We signed a three CB’s that puts us at 43 for now, just kidding, I think it’s 13. We’ll be cutting CB’s in groups once training camp starts.

I know it sounds like I’m hating, I’m not, but I just wonder if Ross wanted a new toy at QB and pushed Sully and Haf to bring in Willis. As all of you here know, I wanted to go forward cheaply at QB, draft a QB in this draft and actually have a QB competition, between Ewers and the draftee, and an inexpensive veteran QB. Being cheap at the QB position got blown out of the water and so did the competition as well. Shame. Hopefully Malik is ready to be a starter, but $45M guaranteed for the next 3 years is far from cheap. Take into account that our roster was not going to be chock full of top talent due to the cap issues we face, we’re not exactly sliding Malik Willis into a favorable situation. We probably need 2 OL (Again!) because Grier got us a defective one in James (3 snaps) Daniels and drafted a defective one in Jonah (2 picks) Savaiinaea. We cut Daniels, so the age old question of how many snaps does it take to get rid of your huge free agent acquisition for the O-line is, a one, a two a *crunch*, a three! 3! Malik Willis might be running alright, running for his life if we can’t find 2 competent OG’s and RT Austin Jackson can’t stay healthy.

Sully and Haf just absolutely better be stellar in this upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. We know we need 2 OG’s, we need CB’s, despite the fact that we have an army of them already. We need a safety now that MFFF made his 2nd departure, this time to the rival NY Jets, who BTW gave him a 3 YR/$40M deal. NY showing the Joisey native some love! Chubb signed with the Bills so we most definitely need pass rushers. That’s a lot of needs in one draft, and I don’t expect to adequately address all of them. This cap mess we’re in will linger for a while, so excellent drafting is in order. Sully gives us our best chance in the last 20 some odd years to be successful at drafting now that Chris Grier has left the building. Talk about pressure, we just spent $67M that we don’t have on a QB while still having 2 gaping holes on the O-line. Sully and Haf have their work cut out for them, I hope they’re up to the task!

Hey, MFer. You got a mancrush at FS this year ala Earl the Pearl?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I do, but not nearly to the tune of Earl the Pearl. His name?
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren. That cat is just a BEAST, but not nearly as pro-ready as the Pearl back in 2010.

EMW may need some time to perfect is game at the NFL level. Nevertheless, his physicality and instincts are very, very impressive.

Projection for me? Future Pro-Bowler and potential All-Pro Safety.

No, I haven’t. Will do right now!

No idea when he’ll be selected maybe late 2nd or 3rd but I have a feeling Gennings Dunker is going to be a good guard.

I want to say something, and I want y’all to listen. If a prospect is ‘off the charts awesome’ at the Combine or their pro day, why did they suck at their football job?

To me, that shows that they half-assed it most of the time. THAT’S A RED FLAG!!!

Again, the results of the Combine and pro days should make one go back to the tape. If it doesn’t match, one will over-draft a cat strictly on his upside measurable.

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I am leaning so hard at taking WR Chris Brazzell II 6’4, 198, 4.37 forty at pick #30. I got him at #43 my last mock but I just don’t think he will be there at #43. He is so good at adjusting to and catching badly thrown balls. Not to mention his abilities on 50/50 balls. He’s an underrated route runner also.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jake Golday is a good prospect at #30: Both edge and off-ball ability at 6-4 240. He has the talent to be a staple of a team for years.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t see him in the first round anywhere. Why do you think he’s a first round pick?

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Golday is interesting. Not at 30 for me though. ESPN does have him ranked at 40. His average ranking over 10 sites have him as a late 2nd.

As a straight pass rusher he struggles a bit but on stunts he is much better when he can use some quickness.

Cincinnati used him as a versatile piece. He is actually a better run defender and cover LB than he is a pass rusher. Solid tackler with a missed tackle rate on the lower end.

It looks like Cincinnati used a 3 LB set a lot but they would move him around. One play he is at the Mike, the next play he’s on the edge, the next play he is in zone coverage and the next play he’s lined up outside an edge and blitzing.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Listening to WQAM, Kim Bokamper telling stories about C Dwight Stephenson. Great stories . . .

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

One ILB I like a lot who should be there in the 7th only due to an injury history. No major injuries but was plagued by nagging injuries his first 3 seasons. Last season he stayed healthy and was very good. NFL.com ranks him at 97 on their list while PFF has him as a UDFA. Fox ranked him as a 4th rounder while 2 others had him as a 7th. I guess some factor in injury history and some don’t.

It’s ILB Jimmy Rolder from Michigan. He’s 6’2, 238 and plays like an old school thumper. His tackling efficiency is off the charts. He lacks in man coverage but ok in zone.

  9. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

Dwight Stephenson is one of my favorite players. He’s actually similar to Brewer in that he was an undersized guy. I think Stephenson played with more power on the interior, but they both move very well. There weren’t a ton of Centers blocking 7 yards downfield back in the day, like we have now, but Dwight could move. Great combination of balance, power and athleticism. He used leverage better than I’ve seen anybody ever do it.

are we gonna have fest this year?

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

OTC and Spotrac are still showing that the Broncos did not take on any of Waddle’s dead money and we have a dead cap of 26.3m on him. They will have to do some extensions soon to clear cap.

That is unless the trade hasn’t become official and the exact terms not released yet. He had his physical yesterday with the Broncos.

  12. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Not sure if we have a FB on our radar but I really like Max Bredeson 6’2, 252 from Michigan. He’s graded from a late 6th to a UDFA. I have him as a priority UDFA signing.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If we are going to draft a FB, I would rather take Riley Nowakowski who can give you a lot more in the pass game. Nowakowski is listed as a TE but played a lot at FB for Wisconsin and IU.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kim Bokamper was talking about when in training camp, Bob Baumhower beat Stephenson in a practice where Stephenson wasn’t really trying, it was supposed to be a light practice. Stephenson told Baumhower “So it’s gonna be like that then, huh?”. The next play, Stephenson picked up Baumhower and threw him and he landed on Bokamper’s ankle and broke it.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – just for comparison, Bob Baumhower was our NT, he was 6’5 261. He’s about the size of most edge rushers these days!

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We signed veteran punter Bradley Pinion

  16. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

Very true. The size of players has gotten pretty amazing. I remember playing against guys who were in that 250 range. In HS for football I was 185-190…ok, 190 with rocks in my pockets. Hell, our FB was 250 in HS. Stephenson was a generous 250-255, I believe. I played against guys bigger than me all the time, but I can’t fathom trying to play against a dude who’s 300-320.

The only NFL game I ever went to was when the Dolphins came up to play the Vikes about 30 years ago. Marino almost pulled off a miraculous comeback, but I’d left at half time. I remember watching the team during warmups, seeing Richmond Webb and thinking he was the biggest human I’d ever seen. I didn’t like how small it made me feel. Lol

    ————-

Brazzell is probably my favorite WR of this entire draft, so I’m right there with ya, man! R1P30 seems maybe a tad too early, but R2P43 is possibly a tad too late. And remember, the Packers hardly EVER take a WR in the 1st round… I’m sure Sully and Hafley will view it the same way.

Perhaps we package one of our four 3rd rounders to move up from R2P43 to nab Brazzell? If not, we’d probably have to bite the bullet and pull the trigger on Brazzell @ R1P30, or have patience and hope he falls to us @ R2P43.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I know most of you would hate this, but with that extra 3rd RD pick, I’m back on drafting Drew Allar with one of them. I have a feeling he will be gone by then anyway

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Eh… I don’t know. Now that we have four 3rd rounders, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. I still value him as a 4th rounder, but we have the luxury of four 3rd rounders.

If we’re trying to hit a home run with a 1st round QB in the ’27 Draft, I think Allar may be a wasted pick… that is, if Quinn Ewers is to even be given a chance.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

What do you think, Mike E?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I mean, what do you think about drafting Allar this year, drafting a QB in the 1st round next year, we already have Malik Willis in-house, and we have Quinn Ewers in-house.

Might it be overkill to draft Drew Allar on day 3?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Sorry, day 2, not day 3.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I hate it

I really don’t want to draft a QB this year after the Willis signing

those spots in the 3rd round are spots where we can land starters and build a foundation

we don’t need to take a flyer on a guy who isn’t going to get many snaps in practice when we can use that pick on a starting S, a starting LB, depth at OL and edge

there are good receivers and TEs when you get into the third round of this draft

there are certainly talented players that may need time to develop that will be available

this will be year 1 of probably at least 3 years from this group in the FO and the coaches. It’s a good opportunity for players who may not be ready year 1 to be ready in year 2 or 3

this draft is building a foundation.

let’s not waste a 3rd on taking a flyer on a QB when we are probably going to give Willis most the snaps in practice and Ewers still has a shot to push to start

I really think there’s a shot that if we keep all our picks, that all of our first 8 picks will be starters by 2027

it’s a unique opportunity to have this many picks, in year 1 of the build. These are the pieces that set the foundation

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I was on board with it until we signed Willis also. I think we could just grab a UDFA this year.

I still wouldn’t be mad at it. Only hope it’s not Beck.

I wonder if the Dolphins had any kind of formal interview with him at his pro day that went down this week.

In 1979, our LG was voted All-State at 182 pounds. All of our RB’s in our wishbone offense were 15 pounds or more bigger than him. Much credit to Indiana HS legendary coach Charlie Smith. He just made everyone on the team so technically sound.

  21. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think we’re in the same position we were 3 months ago. Anything and everything is an option. Go forth and prosper!

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure this is the year to draft a QB. Let the team find out if Willis and Ewers are the guys. If they aren’t sure draft a QB next year.

  23. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Yeah, No drafting a QB this year for me. That went out the door when they signed their guy. We won’t see what Ewers brings other than preseason games.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The coaches will see Ewers in practice to see growth. We’ve already seen Ewers is competent in games. He should get better.

  24. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I understand the ‘Green Bay Way’, drafting a QB every year to ensure competition and excellence. But this is an absolute rebuild, we signed Malik Willis to relatively big $$$, Quinn Ewers isn’t chopped liver, and we have SO many other positions of need to address.

Drew Allar in the 3rd round seems a bit too steep to me.

I traded back one spot (it was offered and couldn’t resist) for the cowboys 5th rounder

then I traded up from our first 3rd with that extra 5th to draft TROTTERS for pigkind

I kind of like the idea of drafting two TEs although I do like dulcich a lot. But I like what the Bills do for Josh Allen with their TEs and I think playing a lot of two TE sets might help Willis a lot

for me Austin Barber is a really interesting development OT – he can move really well and might thrive in a zone blocking scheme. Mauigoa, if drafted will play OG, maybe next to Jackson, and then might eventually move to OT, kind of like what we did with Tunsil

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Mauigoa will be a powerful RG. Put him there and leave him there.

Barber could be a good swing tackle this year. He’s played mostly LT but played RT early on. He might could make the switch back.

I liken Barber to Tiernan. Both have good build for the position, both started out at RT then moved to LT. Barber is a better run blocker and Tiernan is great in pass pro and has almost 3000 college snaps at both OT positions in the Big Ten. Barber has played over 2700 snaps at both OT positions in the SEC.

agreed in Barber and Tiernan. Those are the kind of tackles we should be looking at – Jackson is not a reliable or long term option.

  26. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

purportedly the Dolphins met with Malik Lemon.

    …just saying…

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

He’s projected to be a slot-receiver at the NFL level, and we already have too many slot-receivers. We severely lack at WR on the boundaries.

  27. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    6 things I think…

1- Sully and Hafley have made it very clear that we want to run the ball at will. What does this mean? I think you can bet your bottom dollar that we’re going to draft an O-Lineman (highly likely a Guard, being we have Darth Paul, Brew, and restructured Austin Jackson) before the 2nd round is over for us… whether it be @ R1P11, R1P30, or R2P43, as it stands. I also don’t mind doubling-down on O-Line later in the Draft.

2- I think the EDGE position is one of the most important in all of football. If ya can’t pressure the QB (which is THE most important position in football, if not all of professional sport), he can sit back all day until a receiver comes open. Hopefully, Chop makes a huge comeback this season for us, but even he can’t do it alone. Gotta think we draft an EDGE early, as in before the 2nd round is over for us. And no, I don’t believe any of the cheap-ass FAs we’ve brought in are going to be the answer at EDGE. I also don’t mind doubling-down on EDGE later in the Draft.

3- I think boundary WR and CB are very, very important positions in this pass-happy league. I believe we’re going to address one of the two positions before the 2nd round is over for us. Our current WR room is among the very worst in the league, and Malik Willis needs to have a go-to guy, so as to build synergy with for the years to come. Similarly, if we don’t land a decent CB, teams will destroy us through the air.

4- I think Safety can wait until day 3 of the Draft. I believe it’s a deep position this year, and we may have a stud on day 3. Safety is an under-valued position, but worth it early on Day 3.

5- I think TE can wait until day 3 of the Draft, given who we already have in-house. TE is an over-valued position, but worth it in the mid-rounds. What’s more, there are rumors we may sign another TE via FA… one who is better than average on a fair deal.

6- I think we’re really solid on our interior D-Line, and I feel no need to reinforce it early in the Draft.

That’s where I’m at regarding the Draft and our needs.

Now if an absolute STUD at any position falls in our laps, that could/will change a lot of things.

  28. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

6- I think we’re really solid on our interior D-Line, and I feel no need to reinforce it early in the Draft.

The interior of our D-line was not well ranked last season. It was actually poorly ranked by most outlets.

I think we have a solid chance that the guys we have will further develop into good / great players. They were not there yet last season.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Agreed, Rockphin! I think our young IDL are going to grow exponentially in ’26. And that may be the best thing General Grief left us with, if anything.

I really believe our IDL will ROCK in ’26.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed 3 guys entering their 2nd season which is always considered the biggest jump. Sieler is our vet leader, we signed Butler and we have two other guys. 7 interior DL already on the roster.

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – I don’t feel like it’s a necessity at all, and I won’t be disappointed if we don’t draft him (Allar) and he’s available. We have 4 3rd RD picks so to me it wouldn’t be a waste if they like him. You never know where we’ll be drafting in RD 1 of next year and which QB’s will be available. What if we drafted Allar and he progressed really nicely? You have Willis next year along with Ewers and they compete for the starting job in ’27. If we’re terrible this season and we don’t draft a QB this year, then more than likely we should be in a good position to get one next year, but you never know

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think we’ll be terrible this year, just most likely not playoff bound. The results of this season is about Malik and where his game is at. I could see us flirting with 8 wins if we draft well. We’ll probably lose some close games that we were competitive in.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I just think Allar in the 3rd round may be overkill at the QB position with so many other positions to address.

  30. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I didn’t get to watch all the games, but I saw improvement in our young IDL as the season progressed. It was similar to Chop’s rookie year where he basically struggled for 11 games and then came on for 6. Hopefully, they won’t have the sophomore slump Chop had.

I think Phillips is what he is. I see him improving to be a long term solid player, but I don’t see a really high ceiling. Grant is the guy with the size and athleticism to be very good. He started getting it as the season went on. Betters is a guy who could blow up….either way, but he’s still a question mark for me. I think between Phillips and Grant and Sieler we can draw interior attention and free up the edge guys moving forward.

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Interior LOS positions are also the hardest transition for rookies. These young guys need to learn how to play with grown men who want to destroy them. Individual athleticism doesn’t always get the chance to shine as bright on the interior of the line like other spots.

  32. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Randy, it seemed to me last season that Grant underperformed for his first round selection while Phillips over performed for his fifth round selection. and Biggers play well above his seventh round pedigree

it could just be draft position bias on my part. But Grant looked like he struggled way more than Phillip Phillips looked like he struggled And Biggers seemed to shine

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I remember that Phillips started more games

  34. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tim, I am not sure about them adding a RB. If they are going to use a pick on a RB, then do it and don’t wait until the 7th. If you wait until the 7th, you might as well wait and nab an UDFA RB.

I would not be mad if they did grab one in the 3rd like Jonah Coleman or Kaelon Black at #130 or #151. Coleman might go before the 3rd.

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  37. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Phillip Phillips?

  38. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Rock,

I think that’s a fair assessment. Once a guy is drafted I kinda try to forget about that and just evaluate their play. I get expecting more from higher picks. No doubt. But, ultimately how they impact the team has little to do with where they were picked. Play wise. Money is a whole other thing, which I ignore. Lol

  39. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    7 picks in the top 100! I’m fucking excited…lol.

This is an awesome opportunity to fast-track the culture change and build the team with your vision.

No need for a QB here…lol.

  40. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

As far as the QB position goes, don’t overlook Cam Miller. He’s got some arm talent and can run. Good quick release. I think Miller will really challenge Ewers in TC.

Tom Brady was irate when our interim GM poached Miller off the Raiders practice squad at the end of the season.

  41. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

although I feel like I’m the only one on this blog that feels the need to draft a LB

why is no one else mocking LBs?

Hafley wants to play good defense and run the ball. The big plays come off of that. That’s how I’m viewing this draft. It’s going to be a very different team. We already saw us sign a few OL, WR, Edge and secondary in FA. Malik Willis is a guy they know and believe in. I expect the draft to build on all of that. Competition everywhere. No bias from Sully and Hafley. The turnover has begun in a big way.

A pro day….just like the combine…shouldn’t change your evaluation of a player all that much. If you’re the guy who believes a great pro day actually means something significant….then you’re the guy buying a bridge.

Agreed in general… unless it pertains to somebody in a medical check. And in the case of Jerrod McCoy, we need to see where he’s at.

Have you guys soured on Rutledge or what?

Love Rutledge! But if we can do better than he earlier in the Draft, so be it. If not, he’s definitely on my board!

The Miami Dolphins will suit up in 2026 with nearly half their cap devoted to players no longer on the roster

With the five largest cap hits of the roster devoted to players who will be suiting up elsewhere in 2026, the Dolphins are truly in a league of their own. Only two other NFL franchises will have more than two former players taking up their top five cap hits — the Saints and the Jets (who have three apiece) — quite literally the most embarrassing company to be in.
