Let me preface the discussion with the admission that I love to watch De’Von Achane play. He’s the most electric RB we’ve had here in quite some time, probably since Reggie Bush was here about 14 years ago. I swear on the bible that Tua would have had significantly worse stats if RB De’Von Achane was not on this team. How many times did we see Tua throw a screen or a 1 or 2 yard pass for big gains? Last season we didn’t have TE Jonnu Smith who was another playmaker who turned either nothing or a negative into something. I’m not comparing Jonnu Smith to Achane because Achane is so much better and so different. However, they both served a similar purpose while they were here, turn nothing into something. Now Achane is a ballcarrier so he got a lot more touches than Jonnu did, and it seemed almost every time he took a handoff he was 5-6 yards downfield in a flash.
The factors that should determine whether Achane stays or goes is what compensation can we get for him, what salary do he and his agent want, and what type of salary does GM Jon-Eric Sullivan deem appropriate for a 190 pound running back. Let’s be fair about this, try to be realistic about it before you jump out of your chair. Achane is not a grinder, not a back that wears a team down, and to be fair, he’s not a finisher, not a guy that will punish a defense in the 4th quarter when you’re trying to keep the ball away from the other team. If Achane and more likely his agent decide they want either a contract that mirrors Bills RB James Cook contract which is 4 YR/$46M, that’s a tough one. The Bills have Josh Allen, and as long as he’s there, they’re contenders. The Miami Dolphins at present time are rebuilding and we recently have sent more talent away from the team than we’ve brought in.
Think about where this team is right now. Clearly the team is rebuilding and we’ve had quite the exodus of players with expensive contracts. De’Von Achane may be becoming one of those players. I know some of you couldn’t bear to part with Achane, but if we got an early 2nd RD pick and turned that pick into a better than average starting OG or OT or EDGE rusher, that player is more important than a RB, it just is. Especially considering how much difficulty we’ve had filling either of those positions. If you look at the teams that have won the SB the last 10 years, not one of them feature an expensive RB. Seahawks had RB Kenneth Walker who is now on the Chiefs. Eagles had Saquon Barkley who despite big salary numbers overall, was very small and backloaded to the option years where he will never make it to. KC Chiefs had Isiah Pacheco who was on a minimal contract, and also keep in mind that each and every one of those RBs is around 215 lbs or more. Don’t hate, building a team around a 190 pound RB doesn’t win championships.
So what type of compensation do I think would be fair for a RB on his last year of his contract and seeking a big contract nearing $50M? I’d take an early 2nd RD pick and a late RD pick and find me a stud OL/EDGE/CB/LB. Keep in mind we still have Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon, and both of those guys are not too far off of what the Green Bay Packers had in Josh Jacobs 5’11 222 and good ole Chris Brooks 6’1 219. Jaylen Wright is 5’10 208 and Ollie Gordon 6’2 225. I’m not saying Jaylen Wright is as good as Josh Jacobs was in his early playing days before the injuries, but Jaylen Wright was never going to get real opportunities here with De’Von Achane on the roster. I understand that RB’s are sometimes undervalued, and some teams have bucked that trend. If you watch the 2026 NFL Draft, Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love is probably going top 5, but to be fair, Love is probably better than Achane is and is also 6′ 212 lbs. He’s built to last, and that’s a theme in general for most of the RB’s I’ve mentioned on the last few SB teams.
I know some of you will say Achane is more than a RB, he’s a WR too. Don’t hate me, but paying Achane after his 1838 total yards season would resemble paying Tua after 2023. Achane is talented, but this was the first season he went over 1500 total yards. I think Bijan Robinson is a very good comparison for Achane, but of course Bijan Robinson 5’11 215. He’s played nearly every game save one since he came into the NFL, and he’s totaled 1463, 1887 and last season 2298 total yards. I know Achane has managed to stay healthy the last 2 seasons, but last season was the only season where he was near top 5 (Achane was #6 last season). Achane was #12 in 2024, and then #58 in 2023. So basically, one very strong season, and one good one, and that’s it. If we’re going to pay him a reasonable salary, I’d say keep him. If we have to pay him more than $11M annually, and we can get an early 2nd RD pick and more in the 2026 draft, or maybe a 2027 1st RD pick, I’d take those picks and never look back.

I just read that it is being rumored that the Dolphins will play the 49rs in Mexico City this season. Man, if they do, they should DEFINITELY go early if they can. Mexico City is 2000 ft higher than Denver. Folks regularly experience altitude sickness when visiting for a short time.

No doubt Willis has to speed up his processing but he can also buy you more time. The style of offense will rely more on the run game and more under center for play action. There will definitely be specific plays for Willis that will be different than Ewers. I see a lot of ball control type plays with taking a decent amount of vertical shots. How we execute it is the question.
I just hope he runs the offense efficiently and doesn’t turn the ball over. I don’t think anything he does this year will prevent us from drafting a QB next year. I like how Willis plays, but I’m not sure I see an elite….or maybe even starting QB. He’s gotta prove that part with his arm, to me. 155 throws just ain’t enough to know what he is.

Our O-Line will finally be fixed, our interior D-Line should be really good what with last year’s draft, I got two EDGE-rushers (Bailey is the best in this class), doubled-down on CBs with much upside, doubled-down on WRs with height and speed, landed a decent Safety (perhaps two if Canady becomes an NFL Safety), and a NICE TE in Bentley.
And for losing R3P94 in the trade-up for David Bailey, I got R4P104 in return (just 10 picks later).
Only thing I screwed up on? I didn’t find a replacement for Jordyn Brooks in this scenario. So just plug in your favorite LB prospect at one of the picks above. For example, perhaps we needn’t double-down at OG so early as I did above.
Our current safety room is not good at all. It’s even worse than CB in my opinion. I’m curious to see what Sully drafts first, safety or CB.
For whatever it may be worth, if and when Caleb Downs is available to us @ R1P11 and I take him, the rest of our draft seems to fall apart in terms of cohesion.
Kyle Crabbs spoke of this regarding Matt Miller’s mock draft for us… I get it (not that I needed the Crab Man to tell me this).
I’m not sure taking a Safety @ R1P11 would benefit us for the rest of the draft. Just a thought, and JMO.

So, you could take a promising ILB there like Jimmy Rolder from Michigan. There is also another Cincinnati ILB besides Jake Golday who is decent in Jack Dingle 6’4, 232, 4.58 forty. I have Dingle as a UDFA though. Another late round ILB to think about is West Weeks from LSU the brother of LSU LB Whit Weeks.

Good question. He’s not the FS type really and the 2 safeties they have met with are kind of box/nickle/slot safeties with A.J. Haulcy being one of them and Kilgore the other. Kilgore has the speed to be a deep safety though.
Haulcy and Kilgore are both favorites of mine. I’ll take either one if we don’t go safety with any of our first round picks.

I’m absolutely positive Bailey is a 3-down EDGE, as do many (if not most) others. If you have the time, rewatch his game against Oregon.
Bailey’s in the top 15% of EDGEs with his run-defense grade and his run-stop rate. Not elite, but VERY good.

A future injury concern will remain, of course (like anybody who suffered an ACL tear). However, he showed and proved he’s still worthy of going anywhere in the top-15, IMO.
He may even sneak up into the top-10: his pro day numbers were outstanding.
I never felt McCoy was out of the top 15. He was smart not play too early. He’s totally healed and he should be there when we pick at #11

Bailey looks like a slightly more athletic Chop. Bailey did produce sacks…..especially his last year….where Chop really didn’t in college.

I looked it up just to see. Chop’s RSA was actually higher than Bailey’s. It wasn’t very much at all….basically the same, and I don’t think it means much either way. They’re both great athletes.
Fast/quick guys always love to do spin moves until an OL or two plants him in the dirt as he comes off a spin and off balance. You can catch guys good on spins. I think Freeney was probably the last guy I can remember that featured it at a high level. I can’t remember anybody else.

Grier didn’t manage the team well overall but he did draft some pretty good players and I think Dante Trader Jr. is one of them. Whether he starts or plays 30 snaps as a former 5th round pick good football players who play STs and play significant roles are valuable. I see him finding a role in the secondary.
Hafley wants a physical team, not just defense which is his specialty, but the entire vibe of the team. I think that’s why we signed Malik Willis. He’s a cool cat and a good guy, but on the football field he’s a competitor. That’s what Haf is looking for. Why not start at QB. It’s pretty much the first thing they did.
It may be a little unfair to Quinn Ewers that he won’t be involved in a true QB competition for the starting job, but it’s good that Sully and Haf told him to be the best QB you can be, play your best ball. Apparently, he did the same with Jonah Savaiinaea and Austin Jackson. That was a missing ingredient with Grier and McDaniel. No one had to earn shit here, and that’s a problem. Big Jonah was probably like “They traded up for me, I’m good”. Austin Jackson probably never felt threatened either, and my most favorite of all of course, Tua absolutely, positively, never felt anything but love from McDaniel, until of course it was too late, and Tua was stinking up the field every week. McDaniel and Grier never held any player accountable, they just threw money at these fuckers!

Just because D’Angelo Ponds is only 5’9 doesn’t mean Hafley and JES won’t draft him. I am sure they would prefer one of the slightly bigger CB’s in Delane or McCoy but Ponds can do everything that Hafley wants his CB’s to do. Hafley mentions the 3 stages he wants his CB’s good in and Ponds does all 3 very well. He also has proven he can shut down bigger WR’s in Denzel Boston and Jeremiah Smith. Ponds shut down Jeremiah Smith in their first meeting in 2024 with 3 PD’s. Last year Jeremiah Smith went off vs Indiana in the Big Ten Championship but OSU moved him around and he only had 1 reception on 2 targets vs Ponds.
Ponds has the highest coverage grade over every CB in the draft per draftbuzz. He also has close to the highest tackling grade and run defending grade of all the CB’s in the draft, 43 of his 60 tackles were solo tackles.
If they haven’t taken a CB by pick #43, Ponds will be the best CB on the board if he’s still there.
His 4.35 forty and 43.5″ vertical helps also.

On D’Angelo Ponds again, he measured several pounds heavier at his pro day and ran a blazing 4.31 forty. This would have been the fastest time for a DB at the combine. He said in training for his pro day, he put up a 4.28 forty.
He’s also a film junkie. Cignetti said his film study was a direct result in his opening play pick 6 vs Oregon.
RB Kaelon Black, who has a top 30 visit with the Dolphins came in at 5’9, 208, 4.43 forty, 37.5″ vertical, 10’5″ broad and 27 reps on bench at his pro day.
Maybe they are looking at RB more than we think. With Slowick returning as OC, maybe he feels RB Wright isn’t getting it. Black is a good zone scheme RB.
Packers have traded players away during the draft a few times. We do need a better #2 RB behind Achane so they can reduce some of his wear and tear.

If we trade up just a tad in the 1st round, we could procure a (perceived) blue-chip talent. And as I stated, “DON’T THINK I’d actually do it”.
The only two I’d even consider trading up for are David Bailey and Sonny Styles… and that’s ONLY if they make it to R1P7 or R1P8… I quite honestly don’t believe either last that long. It’s only a pipe-dream that has like a 5% chance of occurring, as I stated to Mike E.
If anything, I foresee us trading down from R1P11 to garner more picks. And if that comes to fruition, give me Vega Ioane.
Keep in mind, the rebuild begins NOW! We’re not waiting to rebuild via the ’27 Draft, it begins NOW!

Regarding D’Angelo Ponds? Yes, I luv him! He reminds me very much of a more polished Brent Grimes, who was raw coming out of Shippensberg, PA.
In researching the ‘Green Bay Way’ over the last 14 years regarding CBs, they seem to have a size-mold: 5’11”-6’00” (give or take), and around 195-205 pounds (give or take).
Personally, I don’t see us drafting Ponds… unless Coach Hafley prioritizes elite nickel CBs as our new HC… which is what Ponds projects to be at the NFL level.
NOT saying Ponds can’t play outside in the NFL, but he would be an exception, not the rule… just like Brent Grimes.
I think he will be one of, if not the top NB in the NFL at some point. When you factor in his tackling and run support with his superb coverage ability, he just screams elite at that position to me. He’s not a frail 5’9, he’s really solid.
There have been plenty of very good 5-9 corners but it does seem like Sully and Hafley like taller corners. Not sure if they’re totally locked in on that though if a shorter guy can really play.

I like Canady. I think he could be a decent slot/NB. He’s about the same size as Ponds at 5’10”, 181, 4.47 forty. His 10 yard split was terrible though so I do worry about his burst and ability to recover. He’s one of those guys that don’t wow you with the testing but he’s smart with good instincts and is always making plays on the field.
Not that I know but I could see us trading down from #11 more than moving up. I also think #30 could be a trade out if a team wants to trade back into the 1st because they’re high on someone.

Again, in my deep-dive of what Green Bay has done over the last 14 years? They RARELY draft a CB over 6’0″ tall. And the mere 3 that they had drafted over 6’0″ tall? They flamed out very quickly.

If I had to choose between Mendoza and Simpson, I’m not sure I’d take Mendoza. Simpson feels like the safer pick to me, but I’m not sure either is close to special.
Mendoza looks a little above average. His passes take forever to get there. He’s skittish in the pocket. He’s not much of an athlete. He looks like a guy who is fine when everything goes okay….not so much off schedule…throwing-wise. He’s lucky he’s in this draft.

The Raiders going and signing Linderbaum was a perfect move. Mendoza needs a center keeping people out of his face. Great move by them.

If I had to choose between Mendoza and Simpson, I’m not sure I’d take Mendoza. Simpson feels like the safer pick to me, but I’m not sure either is close to special…

Whatever the case may be, I’m just sayin’ that there’s a possibility somebody takes Simpson in the top-10… even by trading up for him.
And should that come to fruition, it’s pushes more talent down to us @ R1P11.
Like Mendoza, Simpson was smart entering this draft with another year of eligibility left.
If they really like him, I could Rams taking him at #13. Same with Jets at #16. Next would be Steelers at #21, Browns at #24.
I don’t think Miami would take him at #30 but, if he were there at #43, I could see them pulling that trigger. Though, I think the Jets would certainly grab him at #33 before that.

Just saw a video on stockpiling draft picks, they said its never worked (what Grier was doing does work, he just didn’t have the right guys at the important positions)
with that said, still think we’re doing it the right way, because there’s no use in keeping guys with high cap hits, that won’t be a big part of the team once they make a run

Who says this? Stockpiling picks worked very well for Green Bay so they can’t say it’s never worked. I mentioned it 2-3 months ago when looking at their draft history. Over the last 5 years, GB has averaged over 10 picks per draft. They had 13 picks in 2023.
I traded #11 for #12 and a 2027 2nd then I traded #12 for #13 and a 2027 2nd.

to me Lemon makes sense at 13 but I know others hate a WR at 13. I would NOT take Lemon over any of the 7 guys I mentioned below but the reality is, we might not have those options.
Parker and Pregnon as the next two picks would be incredible. If we landed those two players, we had a very good draft. I have cooled on Igbinosum but the idea of taking a CB in that spot is on the money imo

but all I need is some 4 other players to go top 10 to land one of those guys at 11 and Mendoza going 1 overall is one of those four.

I’m not considering Ponds until the 2nd round, at best. He’s just too small. He gets beat by size all the time. I give him credit for being willing, but his tackling is more like grabbing. I don’t see how he competes on the boundary in the NFL. Maybe he’s a slot guy but even then bigger guys will just get on him quick and engulf him.
That is where I think he will be great at, slot. I would not take him any earlier than 43.
I have not mocked him to us in months for the reasons you state. I just like him.
Delane is the one I really like
Won’t his size be a detriment when matching up with tight ends and RB’s out of the slot? I don’t like him at all. I never liked Brent Grimes and his big mouth wife either.

WordPress is being weird. I think one of the things that having a lot of pics allows you to do is go outside the box a little bit. In that sense, I could see drafting a wide receiver at number 30. I don’t think I do it and I’m also not sure if the value is even there. I haven’t looked at wide receivers much.
Having lots of picks is why I might target a guy like Wetjen from Iowa. He’s a very good returner and a quick little WR. He’s a niche kind of pick…who I’d really target as a returner…but also gives you some mismatch options in the offense.
I have taken Wetjen in the 7th once or twice. Reminds me of that kid from Navy who is a WR/RB in the draft.
Also, I feel the same about all these WR’s at #11 or #30. All the ones I like in that #30 range were mostly slot WR’s in college in Lemon, Cooper and Concepcion. We don’t need anymore slot guys. These 3 do have the ability to play outside though. That is why most of my mocks target Ted Hurst at #75 and every once in a while Brazzell at #43.

Wetjen might even end up being a guy you could sign after the draft. I’m guessing he goes late because of his return ability, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t.
Same here, he’s a good weapon in the return game.
