Dolphins trade back and then trade up in RD 1

It wasn’t the guy I expected us to draft, but it was the position I wanted without question. The O-line is a joke, we have 2 players on that line that are solid in LT Patrick Paul and C Aaron Brewer. That’s it! Jon-Eric Sullivan’s first move in the 2026 NFL Draft was trading back from #11 to #12, one spot with the Dallas Cowboys. We acquired two 5th RD picks, #177 and #180 to move back one spot, and break the hearts of quite a few fans here who wanted S Caleb Downs. One guy who probably was thrilled with the pick was RB De’Von Achane, and another guy was certainly QB Malik Willis. I’m looking forward to having these massive bookends on our O-line, it’s been way too long since this O-line was a strength, and not coincidentally, way too long since this team was a legit contender. Patrick Paul at 6’7 326 and Kadyn Proctor 6’7 352.

Jon-Eric Sullivan’s next trade in the draft was a trade up, as the Dolphins moved from RD1 Pick #30 to Pick #27 by trading Pick #30 and Pick #90 (RD 3) for the #27 Pick and and a 4th RD pick #138. The Dolphins at #27 selected San Diego St. Cornerback Chris Johnson. The 6’0 193lb CB will undoubtedly be pushed to start at the very important CB position. I had hoped we never traded up in this draft, I want more picks, but we really didn’t lose any picks, we just moved back from RD 3 to RD 4. Listen, it’s way too early to judge picks, but I would say the majority of us figured we’d go O-line and CB, and that’s precisely what we did. If/when S Caleb Downs is a perennial All Pro, and Kadyn Proctor is 6’7 380 and the fattest turnstile in Dolphins history, go ahead, pound your chest because you were right. On the other hand, if OT Kadyn Proctor is a motivated player here, and is mauling defenders at the LOS and downfield with regularity and provides solid protection for our QB, I won’t have a care in the world what Caleb Downs is doing.

Day 2 coming up tonight at 7:30 will have the Dolphins waiting 11 spots at Pick #43 and then we’ll have three selections in RD 3, #75, 87 and 94. I won’t be shocked (or disappointed) if we tap a guy for the O-line again in RD 3. LT Patrick Paul, LG Jonah Savaiinaea, C Aaron Brewer, RG Kadyn Proctor, RT Austin Jackson (if healthy). 2 gaping holes bigger than the space between Michael Strahan’s two front teeth that needed to be filled. I personally do not want to hand Big Jonah that job, and I also didn’t want to see OG Jamaree Salyer start at RG. I’m aware we could have selected an OG later and we still might do that. How many times have we been failed by the O-line? How many times have we had to watch an injury torpedo the success of that unit? Two injuries? If not injuries, just out and out subpar play? It’s been a nightmare, and we took one step in attempting to fix that. You all saw the run on the O-line, it was real, and it will probably continue.

I think we’ll probably grab a WR and possibly a TE as well, but where, who knows? I’m curious to see if we move back again in RD 2, that wouldn’t surprise me. We definitely need EDGE help so RD 2 would be a good place to grab one. Players still available at the EDGE position are Zion Young, Cashius Howell, T.J. Parker, Gabe Jacas, Derrick Moore and R. Mason Thomas. We’ll see if we nab one of those guys in RD 2, and then maybe find a WR and another O-lineman. I know some of you love Penn St. EDGE Dani Dennis-Sutton. Maybe we take him. Maybe he would help you guys recover from us not taking Caleb Downs. I know you guys liked him, I respect that, but how did he all of a sudden become a Hall of Famer? I’ll wait for your responses later!

What do you guys think we do in RD 2? Move up? Move back? What position do we target in RD 2? Then what do you think we do in RD 3? Let me know, I want to hear . . .

I’m going to say it now: NO, it’s not about Sully didn’t draft my or your favorite player. Rather, WTF is he doing?

I suppose(?) he’s trying to build a foundation that isn’t so good to win games next year… in order to get the highest possible 2027 Draft pick?

This draft reminds me of an incident that happened to me Wednesday night.

I was tuning my push mower in the garage. I had to walk out to my shed in the dark corner of the backyard to get some engine oil. I didn’t turn the floodlight on as I knew right where it was. Got to the shed, got the oil. No problem got though it. That’s day 1 of the draft.

When leaving the shed walking back I stepped in a heaping pile of fresh steaming dog shit in my flip flops. I’ve got some BIG dogs. It gushed all between my toes. That’s day 2 of the draft.

  42. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

our GM is allowed to have his own board

and obviously does that really deviates from the consensus

but they’ve really put themselves in a spot here that’s ripe for constant criticism

Whenever we see Waddle, Hill, Chubb, Fitzpatrick, even Tua have a good game, people are going to second guess the FO

They aggressively pursued Malik Willis so he just has to perform well

and now this draft where they just passed on so many notable prospects to take their guys.

nobody is going to care if they win

but they aren’t winning for a little while

Most of the players taken in the 3rd are probably going to be available in the 5th

    I’m stunned honestly

  43. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

JMO… and I REALLY like Jacob Rodriquez… but did we really need to add to our LB room @ R2P43? I mean, between All-Pro Jordyn Brooks and the VERY solid Tyrel Dodson, did we REALLY need to address LB so early?

I don’t think so, and I was afraid something like this would happen. It threw the rest of our draft way out of rhythm.

So now, we’re going to enter day 3 of the Draft without having addressed EDGE or Safety… and we most certainly didn’t need to address TE as early as we had with Kacmarek. JMO, as always.

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kacmarek is exactly the kind of TE this offense needs. He’s a traditional inline guy who can catch passes he’s just not going to be a high target guy. But he’s going to be on the field a lot as a blocker and safety valve. He’s likely going to start and rotate with Dulcich and whoever the next guy ends up being. We’re going to be a high rush team. Proctor and Kacmarek get that going.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      I understand what you’re sayin’… I do.

I just find it troubling we haven’t been able to address EDGE or Safety… we could have, but instead we took some “I know better than you” picks in the same vein as General Grief.

Hey, maybe it works out and Sully makes fools of the fan base. But MANY are already second-guessing his day 2 selections.

      We’ll see what happens…

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I shouldn’t say the ‘fan base’, being most are just ignorant and radical for the sake of being radical. I swear, Phin fans are the most fickle fans in all of sport.

I should say, those of us who actually do homework on draft picks. Most of that community aren’t exactly happy with our picks here on day 2.

  45. Randy's avatar Randy says:

So, 2 WRs and a blocking TE in the third, then? Well, ain’t that just great.

  46. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I lost faith in Sully after his first draft decision. I like Johnson, John Holmes should be fine, but the others are complete head scratchers. Yes, I see what he’s doing, I just don’t agree with it.

  47. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The only reason Suly is not being absolutely eviscerated on this board is because people are giving him the benefit of the doubt because he’s new. Again, if this was Grier and he made the same moves, we’d be absolutely destroying him.

  48. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wow, you guys have really turned on Sully! Yes, he’s not taking the guys that YOU scouted, or the ones that all these other outlets told you we should draft.

Sully definitely has his own way of doing things, he’s obviously bringing in physical players that suit his style of play and demeanor. I suppose you can argue value of where he’s taking some of these guys, and maybe you’re right about that, but I remember another guy, Jimmy Johnson who took his type of players and ended up doing pretty well here. There were some head scratchers with Jimmy too, it’s funny how the names haven’t faded after all these years, but I remember CB’s Dorian Brew and Kirk Pointer as 3rd RD and 4th RD picks. LB LaCurtis Jones.

He clearly has a different board and vision than all of us do, and Randy isn’t wrong when he says we’ve kind of been trained because we’ve seen the same names over and over for the last year of guys who all these sites prop up. He’s been consistent taking bigger physical players. Parcells did the same thing, and I fucking hated Parcells more than anyone until Chris Grier. I always felt Parcells totally half assed the whole program here, never had his heart in it at all, was lazy assembling his staff. I don’t think for a second that Sully is being lazy, he has his vision of the makeup of this team and he’s bringing in his type of players and that’s that! It’s not just physical players, it’s guys that want to play ball!

I’m not going to waste a new article on you fuckers because you’re all acting like spoiled kids who got clothes for Christmas instead of the PS 5 and drone you wanted. So there! LOL

  49. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I do have a question for you guys. What are the chances that Chris Bell will be ready to play this season? Is he fully recovered?

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s not just you guys either. Most of X or twitter as it was are ripping Sully to shreds. I know I wanted change. He’s bringing it by getting his type of players. I hated our roster here for way too long. I think we might love our new one. These guys are going to be easy to root for, and I’ll be happy to have them.

    Mike,

if this was a Grier draft he’d be ripped to shreds. Believe me, I hope they all turn out. Right now I just can’t see it. The guy we just drafted tore his ACL in November. If Grier drafted an injured guy, you know you’d be all over him!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If it was only about this season, yes, I would. We all know that’s not the case after we dumped 3/4 of the team because we had no cap space to pay salaries. It’s not at all about this upcoming season. This season sets the tone as to what type of team we’re going to be. Next season the shit gets real because it’s not just foundation, it’s winning and contending. (Hopefully!)

so,if it ends up being Malik Willis throwing a lot of passes to these two guys, the draft will look good.

I thought Bell was a great pick the moment it was made. He’s a first round WR with no injury – maybe the 1 Wr. In the 3rd I think that’s a good chance

Douglas on the other hand I knew nothing about. You can see the positives in that video

that said, I think the issue we are having is all the guys we passed on for guys that may have been available later.

if you replace Kcmerek or Douglas with Pregnon or Dunker and I think I’m happy with day 2

we have two fourth today and 3 5s

there’s a few good safeties left in Kilgore, Ramsey, Wheatley and Genesis Smith

there’s some good pass rushers in Jospehs and DDS

there’s actually a lot of good CBs left

and two OL in Farmer and a Bowry that I have my eye on

they decided to use those 3rd on weapons, and we have two receivers that can push to start and a very good blocking TE to help Achane – that really might help Malik Willis and be a young productive offense at the end of the day

so I cannot say, there’s no vision. It’s just not my vision of the draft

  60. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think injury free Bell is better than Tate, Tyson or Lemon

my only concern with Bell is the injury especially the timing of it. He may not be ready to start the season

  61. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I understand defending Sully/Hafley in their first draft. I hate that they seem to be going out there to prove what M13 said, ““I know better than you” picks”.

I like Caleb Douglas but I can guarantee you 100% of all teams in the NFL did not have him in their top 75 and can also guarantee you 99.9% of all teams didn’t even had him in their top 100.

You can also not tell me he was the BPA at pick 75. No fucking way.

Same goes for TE Will Kacmarek.

You can’t tell me those 2 were better prospects than Haulcy, Pregnon, Dunker, Black, Brazzell and Hurst. I will even throw in Barber, Edge Barham, DDS, Kilgore and Tiernan.

Where are all the people on here that like BPA. This draft is the farthest thing away from going BPA. It’s all about want. They want a specific guy and they are reaching badly to get them with blinders on when it comes to better talent out there.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

that’s ultimately the problem. Your guys are still your guys if you take them in the 4th or 5th round. If you end up with Pregnon/Dunker and a pass rusher or safety and then you draft the TE and Adouglas in the 4th, now it’s home run

    ********

the answer at LB for me is YES. I was mocking LBs at 43 for weeks. I wanted one. It’s the centerpiece to our defense. We have needs everywhere. Bring you leader in early.

that’s just not the LB I wanted

the TE in the 3rd on the other hand has me speechless

Same with Douglas who probably is there in the 4th round – but then gain I expected Stribling to be available in day 3 and was the forst pick of day 2 instead. Size and speed are special measurables – I guess you just have to shoot your shot early

  63. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree Piggy, if they had gotten just one of those other players it would have flipped day 2 for me. Instead, they reached badly.

Yes, there are some good players left but most will be gone in the the 30 picks until we pick again.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

With that in mind, we have 5 picks before about 2 today,

that leaves a lot of room to snatch up good players that have dropped farther than expected

  64. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

”where are all the people who wanted BPA?”

that’s exactly what I was saying last night

  65. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

also, on the positive side, you have to think, on this team which is depleted of talent, those players have a Real shot to start

so if Bell and Douglas have somewhere between 600-1000 yards each when the season is over, that’s really something to build on

  66. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Brian, I get lambasted many times for mocking guys I want. All I hear is BPA, BPA is the way to go. Again, this is the farthest thing from BPA and it’s being defended.

Note that I am only talking about picks 75 and 87. I like the players but they would have easily been there at 130 and 138.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Agreed. I understand we are building for the future, but why not get the BPA for the future? I don’t think I’ll ever get over them passing on Downs. Well, maybe if they build a powerhouse perennial contender and win a SB one day. But other than that, no. I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t select the best player

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Best player available for which team? I can’t make you see the culture change, the type of player they are looking for. these are the best players available for what they want. Either that makes sense for you it doesn’t, but that’s what they’re doing. We’ll see if it works

  68. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

You can’t tell me that with TE’s Raridon, Joly, Trigg, Bentley, Endries, Royer and Wright still on the board that a primarily blocking TE wouldn’t still be there at 130 or even 138.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Yes I can tell you that. May not be right , but until they start playing games it is as right as anything anyone else says.

  69. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

MikeE, it’s not the players. I like them. It’s the where and, yes, there is no way you can convince me they were BPA. If they were their BPA at those spots, then we are in trouble.

  70. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Mike E,

I could throw everything out the window, but you can’t convince me that picking Proctor after having Downs fall right into our laps was a good value pick. Like i’ve said I’m not saying the proctor won’t turn out to be a good right tackle but you could find a right tackle next year in free agency, the draft, etc. It’s not that hard to find a good right tackle. Having a game changing safety to quarterback, the secondary is not that easy to find we had it, and we left that slip away

  71. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I don’t follow college football, but I do follow certain people both on this board and in the professional world who love scouting and are consistently correct. When those guys throw out names, 9 times out of 10 those names go on to do great things, or at least be solid vets. The proof is also when those players go to teams that have histories of solid drafting.

The guys our FO picks are usually out of the league right after their rookie contract is up or even well before. Different FO? yeah, but almost completely similar results.

We know what this team needs and what we’ve needed for years. Wide Recievers and blocking tight ends weren’t priorities for this team. Edge, Secondary and o-line were. Our first pick was a project who doesn’t even know what position he’s going to play. The CB looks to be solid. LB? Okay there can be a case made for the dude, but not at the expense of passing over BPA meeting needs.

Drafting a wide receiver who can’t catch is straight up kooky dooks.

This whole “new” FO comes down to probability vs possibility. Did JES possibly make good decisions with coaching and his first draft and offseason? Maybe, but the probability is extremely low. You can’t have watched this league for the last 40+ years and honestly believe that this time is different. I hope I’m wrong, it’s just really rare when I am.

  72. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

All this cornplaining aside. I do like the TE. He reminds me of Jackson Hawes who M13 and I really liked.

  73. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

if they are thinking size there are still quite a few DBs that are there

Devin Moore, Will Lee, Masses, Mohammed, Scott, Wheatley, Payne and Gensis smith – all on the larger side

  74. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would be surprised If Jude Bowry is not on their radar

  75. Randy's avatar Randy says:

How is drafting 2 WRs and a TE building “he right way”? This is not what he said he’d do…so stop saying that.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

its not, but that was the 3rd round, not the first

OL, CB and ILB are positions, that I’d consider building the right way

He didn’t draft Gesicki, he drafted a 3 position blocker, that can catch a little

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBMike – Their board isn’t your board, or the Giants board either. They passed on Caleb Downs too, twice! These guys are drafting who they think are the best players available for what they’re looking for. I know that’s strange, because it doesn’t jive with all the ratings, but JES doesn’t care about those. Now, the end result is the most important. If he gets these guys to perform well for this team, no one will give a fuck, but if they look overmatched and don’t show well, then we have a different story. I just feel more and more they’re drafting culture change and physical body type

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

It also doesn’t jive with half of what they said leading up to the draft.

“I just feel more and more they’re drafting culture change and physical body type”

      —————-

Yeah, that’s fine, but why reach sooo far? Both those players would have been available in the 4th round easily. Also, they passed on a lot of physical body types so that argument doesn’t work for me.

It’s not just me. I have looked at so many articles, comments and videos from professional scouts, former players, etc and every single one of them say Douglas at #75 was the biggest WTF pick of the draft so far.

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I would be surprised If Jude Bowry is not on their radar.

    —————

I am not surprised at anyone who has been or is on their radar. I am surprised at their blinders toward who is still on the board.

It’s like they prepicked everyone they wanted before the draft and where they were going to take them to make sure they got them regardless of who was still on the board.

  78. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

if this was a Grier draft he’d be ripped to shreds…

of course, because Grier never had a plan, he’s just drafting a collection of players

only time will tell, if Sully is doing the same, he does explain it in layman’s terms

Good Morning.. Hope we find some gems today.

  80. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

they can’t draft every position of need in 3rds, I have to think they don’t think S is a huge need

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Wait…Are you suggesting the guys in the building may have had a different opinion of what was a need!?! Balderdash!

  81. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

My two favorite picks in this draft so far are both on defense. While I would have gone with Colton Hood and EDGE with those 2 picks, I still like the Chris Johnson and J-Rod picks.

  82. Randy's avatar Randy says:

ONE LOS player chosen in the first 3 rounds. ONE. I don’t include TE…even a blocking one. How is that building a solid foundation moving forward? These guys said they’d do one thing and then did another. Seems to me like they aren’t following the plan THEY said they’d had. Looks like they were throwing darts.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

our CB was bare, have no problem drafting a big CB, that has had good results in coverage

he’s also drafted 2 1 of 1s in Proctor and the TE

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I remember them saying they wanted size and football love, not OL specifically.

  83. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve,

what does “2 1 of 1s in Proctor and the TE” mean?

  84. Randy's avatar Randy says:

“We’ve got to be dominant on the offensive line and dominate on the defensive line,” Sullivan said

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

again, you can’t fill all of our holes in one draft/FA especially with no money

they love Rodriguez, maybe they have a plan for him

  85. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve,

You have got to be kidding me. Those 2 players are hardly one of ones. I like Proctor’s potential but that’s all it is right now. He’s got as many flaws as assets at this point. I can find 12 blocking TEs in any draft or UDFA. You hitting the ayahausca?

  86. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we’ve had a huge issue playing short yardage ball on O, we drafted a people mover OL and a blocking TE/HBack/FB

seems like that huge need is being addressed

was thinking this morning the TE pick would be justified to me, if he was projected to play all 3 roles, Sully said, yes in his peesser

  87. twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

I agree with Randy though – was hoping for more trench guys as that’s where I feel one should start. And they did insinuate as much. Maybe they are ok with what they have in house and confident that later round targets will be there who fit their plans. Will tier 2-3 guys get the job done vs. tier one guys on the o-line? I just feel like we’ve seen this movie before…..I will defer full judgment until we see the final product on the field. Not that my judgement matters for squat lol

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

My judgement doesn’t matter for squat either.

BBM I trust your judgement way more than mine on this as you put in tons of time and research on the draft and the players. I just have vague ideas and thoughts on how a team should be built based on history.

Once upon a time there was a draft for the Miami Dolphins and everybody died

    THE END

  89. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think Chris Bell could be one of the biggest steals of this draft if he has no after affects from that ACL and is the same beast. He has been on my watch list since 2024. He had 3 games in a row last year where he was unstoppable vs Virginia, Pitt and Miami. I watched this game last year vs Miami and he went to the top of my list of WR’s I wanted until the ACL injury.

  90. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

again, you can’t fill all of our holes in one draft
    ————-
With 7 picks in the first 3 rounds, I know many of who could have come a hell of a lot closer than they have.

You can’t tell me taking Haulcy at 75 and Dunker at 87 wouldn’t have filled some holes and made this team better. You still could have taken WR at 94 and the same TE at 130.

  91. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

FTR, I like a couple of these players, but they feel like additions to an established team, not an organization starting over again that is supposed to be building from the ground up.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jordyn Brooks has been a mentor to Jacob Rodriquez as has Zach Thomas. They’re Texas Tech guys.

  93. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

He wasn’t a need or on my radar so the when the took Thumbstache in the 2nd I was like WTF!? But that dude is an football

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Building from the inside out also includes young players already on the team. Before you’re looking to shit on everything try to look at the entire picture.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Of course and that is what I do. I learn our roster inside and out. I analyze all the free agents we bring in and where they have been and what they have done.

That is what I base my picks off of.

Again, not shitting on the players picked, just shitting on the where and who would have been a better player after looking at “the entire picture”.

Not trying to be a smart ass but I thought you were a BPA guy. No one in this world can convince me that Douglas was the BPA at 75 based on the entire picture of our current roster.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t know enough about all these prospects especially after the top 20 or so. I see drafts like this every year and the reason is teams don’t have the same boards as mocksters. I didn’t know anything about Jacob Rodriquez either but now that I do I understand why we drafted him. You can be more productive than that guy.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        can’t be
