The Miami Dolphins Rookie Draft Class reported to camp July 21st. There was an expected move, however, 3rd RD pick WR Chris Bell from Louisville was placed on the Active Non Football Injury list. We most likely won’t see WR Chris Bell until the 2nd half of the season or later, and that’s fine. Let him fully heal, and we’ll see him when he’s healthy and ready to go. He’s going to most likely be our best WR when he’s good to go, and probably the most impactful, and there is certainly no reason to rush the timetable on his return. The one guy who never gets any positive spin is the first WR we drafted in 2026 is 3rd RD Pick (#75) WR Caleb Douglas. I remember clearly the sentiment here, and in general as that pick went down. “We could have taken him 60 picks later”, or “OMG, what a reach!!!”. While WR Chris Bell is healing, WR Caleb Douglas has an opportunity to grab some serious playing time and earn getting the ball thrown his way. From what I’ve heard, QB Malik Willis likes Douglas and has already developed a rapport. That’s great news, or hype, but looking at the WR room, do we really want WR Jalen Tolbert or WR Tutu Atwell getting the majority of targets?
Let’s switch gears for a moment. Looking at our draft class, there are two players who should be starting immediately, and that’s both 1st RD picks, LG Kadyn Proctor (Pick #12) and CB Chris Johnson (Pick #27). Where CB Chris Johnson lines up the most doesn’t really matter, he will probably be on the field all the time on defense, either at LCB or covering the slot. Johnson has that versatility. As opposed to last year’s first OL taken (OG Jonah Savaiinaea), Proctor must play like a starting caliber OG or the Chris Grier “Boo Birds” will turn on JES real fast. The Dolphins gave ILB Jordyn Brooks a nice 3 year contract extension, 3YR/$51M/$35M Guaranteed. No doubt Brooks earned that, but it does muddy as to where 2nd RD Pick (#43) Texas Tech LB Jacob Rodriguez will play, and how much. Also on the roster is ILB Tyrel Dodson who was 2nd in total tackles last season with 129, had 5 sacks, 1 FF and 1 FR. With Brooks under contract 3 more years, if anyone is going to get moved, Dodson figures to be that player.
Besides the 2 rookies already mentioned as the ones who will be the biggest impacts, Proctor and Johnson, who is the next guy up? When you look at our defense, one thing stands out for sure, is where is the pass rush going to come from? I’m not sure any one player we drafted will be the leading sack or pressure guy (For those of you that worship “pressures’). We did draft 2 players that could potentially be pass rushers, 4th RD Pick (#130) OLB Trey Moore 6’3 250 from Texas and then 7th RD Pick (#238) DE Max Llewellyn 6’5 263 from Iowa. In addition those two drafted pass rushers, we picked up as an UDFA a guy who has potential to surpass both of these guys, and that’s DE Mason Reiger 6’5 250 from Louisville and Wisconsin. Reiger had 8 sacks in 3 seasons with Louisville, he missed the ’24 season with a knee injury. In 2025, Reiger went to Wisconsin and recorded 5 sacks. We brought in a bunch of veteran pass rushers like LB Josh Uche (PHI), David Ojabo (BAL) and Robert Beal (SF). the last two have 5.5 sacks combined over 7 seasons, so despite being veteran players, these guys haven’t gotten it done. Uche has 21.5 sacks in his career, but 11.5 of them came in 2022 with the New England Patriots, and he has a total of 8 sacks over the last 3 seasons.
Another rookie that may end up getting a good share of playing time is 6th RD Pick (#200) OG D.J. Campbell. Listen, we all hope last year’s 2nd RD trade up for OG Jonah Savaiinaea plays well this season, and puts the doubters to sleep by having an excellent season. In addition to Savaiinaea playing well, we also hope that RT Austin Jackson stays healthy all season and plays well. If one or both of those don’t happen, it’s very possible we see OG DJ Campbell move to one of the OG spots. We do have OT/OG Jamaree Salyer who we picked up from the Chargers who can step in at either OG or RT, but my guess is they’d rather keep Salyer as a swing tackle, so if Jackson was injured I’d say Salyer moves to RT, but if Savaiinaea is playing poorly, Campbell would get the chance to play RG, where he played 4 seasons at Texas.
On defense, it’s an interesting situation. Our ILB corps could be one of the best in the NFL with ILB’s Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson and rookie Jacob Rodriguez. The defensive line is a mix of 2nd year players DT’s Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers, along veteran DE Zach Sieler. It appears on the surface that a bunch of our rookies will be situational players, like pass rushers Trey Moore, Max Llewelyn and Mason Reiger (Provided they all make the 53), as well as tweeners like LB/S Kyle Louis and S Michael Taafe. Kyle Louis is an interesting guy who may get a large role in passing downs either as a blitzer or a cover guy because of his quickness and speed. The secondary looks like it will be LCB (R) Chris Johnson, RCB Juju Brents, and 2nd year CB Jason Marshall. At safety my guess it will be Dante Trader and some combination of Lonnie Johnson Jr., Kyle Louis and Michael Taafe. When I say combination, I think playing time will be affected by each players effectiveness in certain situations.
I’ve yet to mention one guy who I think will be playing an awful lot of football for our Dolphins in 2026, and that’ rookie TE Will Kacmarek who was a 3rd RD Pick (#87). I know many of you love TE Greg Dulcich, but Dulcich doesn’t block, and Kacmarek does. I don’t we just drafted a battering ram on the O-line, although I hope he’s that for sure! I think Kacmarek will be a part of the passing game. If Dulcich is on the field in 2 TE sets, the defense will naturally flow to Dulcich, which should leave Kacmarek open. If he can take advantage of that, Kacmarek could see a bunch of targets. To add, with so much uncertainty on the O-line, especially the right side with Savaiinaea and Jackson, having an excellent blocking TE is truly not only a blessing, but a necessity. The last thing our QB needs, whether it’s Malik Willis or Quinn Ewers is to have defenders putting them on the ground in less than 2 seconds. Which rookie overall will have the biggest impact in your view?

The list of missing players again included tackle Austin Jackson, safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. and guard Jamaree Salyer, but this time they were joined by safety Dante Trader Jr. and wide receiver Kevin Coleman. Tight end Greg Dulcich returned to practice wearing a red jersey, though he participated on a very limited basis and didn’t catch any passes after being spotted with some kind of extra padding or protection in the glove on his right hand.
After working in pads the previous two practices, the Dolphins dumped them in their return to work. That meant no one-on-one work before the team periods.
This was a pretty ho-hum practice without many noteworthy plays, though we’d probably have to give the defense the edge for a third consecutive practice.
Among the standouts were linebacker Willie Gay Jr., defensive tackle Matthew Butler and safety Zayne Anderson.
This practice came in at a little bit under 2 hours.
THE WILLIS WATCH
There was nothing that stood out very much about Malik Willis’ on this day, whether good or bad.
The issues on offense have extended beyond the quarterback play, particularly with a problem dealing with pressure.
That said, there were no noteworthy throws or plays by Willis, who didn’t throw an interception or a touchdown pass.
As for the other QBs, this might have been the first time that rookie free agent Mark Gronowski had the best performance, even if it did include a possible interception (we explain the “possible” a bit later).
— Willis’ second pass in team periods was a bomb to Malik Washington, but he was double covered by JuJu Brents and Michael Taaffe and the play was closer to an interception than a completion.
— Clelin Ferrell did a good job in pursuit after a Willis naked bootleg that prevented him from setting his feet to attempt a pass.
— Willie Gay Jr. came up with a pretty spectacular interception against Cam Miller when he tipped a pass over his head and came down with the carom.
— Tackle Charlie Heck held Chop Robinson after getting beat to the outside.
— Jaylen Wright had a good run up the middle where he made a couple of quick hits at the line.
— Jacob Rodriguez flew into the backfield on a running play for Ollie Gordon II.
— Jalen Tolbert made a nice catch over the middle on a high throw from Ewers.
— Ethan Robinson came in free on Gronowski on a blitz and might have had a sack. The play was allowed to continue and Gronowski sailed a pass right into the waiting arms of safety Louis Moore.
— Defensive tackle Matthew Butler had two spots against Gordon in a series of two runs in three plays.
— On an incompletion by Ewers, rookie Seydou Traore did a good job of pass protection against David Ojabo.
— Gronowski showed nice running ability after getting pressured.
— Willis had a quick completion to Theo Wease Jr. to beat a blitz.
— Patrick Paul committed a false start before stonewalling Robinson in pass protection on a play where De’Von Achane made a nifty catch on a pass thrown behind him. He committed another false start on a fourth-and-1 in a two-minute period.
— Ronnie Harrison looked like he got to Ewers first when the defense collapsed the pocket.
— Gay got to Ewers almost right off the snap, forcing the QB to throw the ball away.
— Miller had a nice completion over the middle to Wease on the last play of practice.
— Robinson got around the edge to force Willis out of the pocket before Tyrel Dodson came up with the tap to end the play.
— Riley Patterson was wide left from 46 yards out before Gonzalez made it.
— Ewers had a long completion in a later two-minute period to Tolbert, though it appeared the defense stopped before the pass.
— Alex Austin had the coverage on a third-down incompletion from Ewers to Traore.
— Patterson and Gonzalez both were wide on 55-yard field goal attempts.
— On his first play in the two-minute period, Gronowski overshot Terrace Marshall Jr. deep down the left sideline.
— Gordon had a very busy; he caught a pass from Gronowski in that two-minute period.
— Gronowski’s best throw of the day was an outside completion to Tahj Washington.
— Jackson Woodard’s blitz forced what looked like a hold from the offense. Woodard’s pressure on third-and-8 forced Gronowski to throw early and into an incompletion.
— On his last kick of the day, Patterson was good from 44 yards out to finish the day 1-for-3. Gonzalez also hit and finished 2-for-3.
eeeesh! 3-6 on field goals. That kinda sucks!
The Miami Dolphins claimed tight end Jeremiah Franklin off waivers from the New England Patriots.
With the Dolphins’ current starting tight end, Greg Dulcich, missing most of the training camp practices in the first week, the Dolphins look to add more depth to their tight end room.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this signing is Franklin’s connection to Jeff Hafley.
Franklin played his college football at Boston College, where Hafley served as head coach.
He’s really slow for a TE but has great hands and a very reliable receiver. Not sure about his blocking.
Boy, I tell you, it’s hard to know what to believe in today’s world. I read people saying the EXACT OPPOSITE of this just a few days ago.
Motion Remains a Key Piece of the Offense
Slowik also talked about Miami’s extensive use of pre-snap motion.
He acknowledged that all the movement creates operational challenges, including timing, assignments, and snap-point consistency, but believes the benefits far outweigh the growing pains.
The Dolphins are committed to continuing the motion-heavy approach because it helps create advantageous matchups and forces defenses to reveal their intentions before the snap.
Fortunately for Miami, Slowik said Willis is already very comfortable operating in that style of offense thanks to his previous experience in Green Bay and Tennessee.

Not sure if any watched the HOF game. It was an entertaining game to watch for the most part. Carson Beck looked decent but his long balls, though caught, were off mark a little. That’s the same problem he had in college. He threw some nice tight window dimes.
BBM’s UDFA want QB Haynes King had a solid game throwing for 180, 2 TD’s, 0 INT’s, 0 sacks and 39 yards rushing. His runs included a critical 26 yard run on 3rd and 14 with 39 seconds on the clock and no timeouts left and the game winning 5 yard TD run with 2 seconds left on the clock. Yeah, it was against 2’s, 3’s and some 4’s but it shows that he is a good developmental QB to have and he can do it throwing and running. He did have 5 incompletions on that final drive but that actually shows his experience. He protected the ball and didn’t try to extend plays or force the ball too much and waste time on the clock.

They’re talking to a rookie FB on the Vikes on KFAN. He pointed out that he watched a lot of Alec Ingold tape to learn how to play.
Ingold was a stud before he got that bad concussion last year. He started whiffing a few blocks as to not contact his head for the rest of the season.
Hafley on WR Chris Bell:
“Chris is progressing nicely. You saw him run (Thursday),” Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said ahead of Friday’s practice. “He’s accelerating, he’s decelerating, he’s able to cut.”
“We want to be certain that he is ready so he does not have setbacks early in his career,” Hafley said. “Is it going to be day to day? No. Do I think it’s going to be long term? No. Does that answer the question exactly how you want it? No. He looks good, though.”
While there’s still uncertainty over whether Bell can be activated off NFI, which would mark when he can go through practices in camp, Hafley sees the upside of having Bell progress to the point of playing in a preseason game this month before his first regular season.
“It would be a huge benefit to get him comfortable and, if possible, to play him in a preseason game before he has to actually go out and play in real games. Yeah, that would be huge,” the Dolphins coach said. “Do I hope that happens? That would be amazing. Are you confident that will happen? I’m not sure yet. But that would be a very, very big benefit for him to start getting some work in a preseason game.”
Elsewhere, veteran right tackle Austin Jackson returned to practice Friday after missing two sessions and most of the Monday practice when he initially sustained a tweak, of which specifics were undisclosed.
Dolphins safety Dante Trader Jr. is not practicing Friday, Hafley said, after the second-year player was first missing from drills Thursday.
Hafley said his undisclosed injury is not a long-term issue as Trader is day to day. Hafley is hopeful he can return next week.
Hafley said similar Friday about wide receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. and tight end Ben Sims, as Coleman first missed a session Thursday and Sims has been out for multiple practices now.
“(Friday) is going to be a lot of unscripted, move the ball, see where it lands,” Hafley said. “Coaches call it, players respond without having the script. Because sometimes when you go into practice, the offensive or defensive coaches can hand them the script, they can look at the plays. They can think about, ‘Oh, I’m in on this play.’
“But (Friday’s) really the first time that we’re just going to call it like a real game and they got to think and respond and the coaches have to do the same thing.”
Nonetheless, Hafley is still looking forward to Saturday’s session where the players will drill on the stadium field.
“It’ll be fun to get into the stadium, really in any mode on the field, so I’m excited for that,” Hafley said. “But it won’t be like going through a game routine and doing the stretching and all that. I don’t want there to be any distractions, and I don’t want to take away from their routine.

— Because pads were back on, the one-on-ones resumed, and as always we focused on the matchups between offensive and defensive lines because the receivers vs. DBs favors the offenisve players too much.
— Among those stood out in the one-on-ones were first-round pick Kadyn Proctor, center Aaron Brewer stonewalling Jordan Phillips and former Green Bay defensive lineman James Ester getting the job done in this drill at guard.
— On the flip side, tackle Charlie Heck again struggled.
— On the first play of 11-on-11s, guard Jonah Savaiinaea’s block on Zach Sieler opened up a nice hole for De’Von Achane.
— Two plays later, Sieler got to Willis for what would have been a sack (looked like he beat Patrick Paul). Willis continued the play and it ended with a nice high catch by Jalen Tolbert.
— Willis then threw a long pass to Caleb Douglas down the right sideline after he beat Jason Marshall Jr.
— Linebacker Ronnie Harrison Jr. came up with a quick tackle after a Quinn Ewers screen to fullback D.J. Herman. Harrison has been very noticeable all camp.
— Robert Beal Jr. came in from the back side for a run stop against Ollie Gordon II.
— Alex Austin had great coverage downfield against Tutu Atwell, though it was pretty handsy.
— Ester continued his good work in 11-on-11s with a clearing block against Max Llewellyn to free Carlos Washington Jr. on a run.
— Herman got open downfield over the middle, but Cam Miller overshot him.
— Paul false-started on a later second-down play.
— Sieler blew up a running play by crashing through the line.
— Douglas made a nice low catch on a Willis pass he threw after Josh Uche got next to him after getting past Jonah Savaiinaea.
— Beal popped Jaylen Wright at the line on a running play, though Wright ran through the contact.
— Safety Louis Moore had good coverage and a pbu against Tutu Atwell after Ewers rolled out to his right.
— Miles Battle had an interception against Ewers after his high pass went off the hands of Terrace Marshall Jr. Would have been a tough catch, but it was makable.
— Gronowski showed nice running ability on a keeper.
— Gronowski then threw behind Tahj Washington over the middle and he couldn’t make what would have been a difficult catch.
— Willis had a nifty touch pass off schedule to tight end Cole Turner near the sideilne.
— Uche beat Patrick Paul to apply pressure on Willis, and Jason Marshall Jr. dropped a low throw.
— Willis had a good completion to Douglas near the sideline after stepping up in the pocket to avoid Chop Robinson after he got around Jackson. Jackson did stonewall Robinson on the previous play.
— Battle got another interception, this one against Ewers after he stole the ball from Atwell on a bomb that Ewers threw late and a bit too short. Bad play all around by the offense.
— Ewers then overthrew Wease over the middle.
— David Ojabo led the rush in getting to Ewers to stop the next pass play.
— Linebacker Jackson Woodard had a pick-six against Gronowski when he stepped in front of a pass intended for Seydou Traore.
— On the next play, Major Burns intercepted Gronowski after his underthrown pass bounced off the back of Ethan Bonner as he attempted to catch up to Atwell.
— Jordyn Brooks did a great job of attacking and stopping an Achane run on the first play of a red zone session.
— Achane caught a short pass from Willis while on the ground after he slipped.
— Willis threw a touchdown pass to rookie tight end Will Kacmarek, who found himself wide open in the end zone after a clear busted coverage.
— Louis Moore got into the backfield to meet running back Jaylen Wright –for a loss.
— Harrison batted down a pass from Ewers after a naked bootleg.
— Ewers threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Henning on a first-and-goal.
— Zeek Biggers got a sack after going through straight up the middle.
— Matthew Butler and Clelin Ferrell both got to Ewers for a sack.
Did I mention we need to find better OT depth???
Pitches are a great play for Achane. Would be nice to see that become a bread and butter play for us. Can Achane throw? If teams start crashing on pitches to him, it might present some opportunities to throw over them. Some trickeration.
I don’t see where either Achane or Wright have attempted a pass in the NFL or college. Doesn’t mean they can’t.
Some of our WR’s may have in college on end arounds or jet sweeps.
Still, every practice we here of these runs up the middle against this wide 9. Some run stuffs also. Is this on the DL or the LB’s not filling?

was kind of pointless to do any kind of play by play, because we have issues
individually all the top draft picks looked good rds 1-3, the rest weren’t noticeable other than Traore with a couple of nice catches, Kyle Louis flying around out there. Didn’t notice any draft picks the last 2 yrs playing bad, except Ewers he was awful
Jackson was back to solidify the OL, entire 1st stringers looked the part
Douglas showed up again with a few nice catches
in the 1v1 Wr vs CBs the WRs won, Johnson was maybe the lone bright spot for CBs
backup QBs were rough to say the least, twice had deep WRs open by 5+ yards and under threw for ints, another ball across the middle was picked off after a WR didn’t catch it ball popped up
Malik and Malik looked good as did Achane. Tutu dropped at least 1 and didn’t notice any catches
backup OL was awful, especially Charlie (what the) Heck
So far I’ve been seeing good reports about Caleb Douglas. He doesn’t seem like a big reach as a 3rd round pick anymore.
he was the best WR on the field today, Malik looks good, just in a less impactful way
Trader worked on the side before practice, he looks ready to go
Bell looked ready too and amazing, quick, fast, good ball tracking, no wastes steps out of his breaks

all of our top edge rushers looked good. During 1v1 OL vs DL Paul knocked Chop on his ass, Chop got up and shoved Paul, the crowd roared, embarrassed is probably why Chop shoved him
Willis stayed in the pocket, except 1 broken play he ran for a 1st
Tolbert and Malik Washington look like keepers. Dulcich was back, didn’t do much, but looks ready to go
new TE #87 Cole Turner is easily our 2nd best pass catching TE
Ollie did nothing running behind backup OL, Wright had a couple of nice runs. One of the other RBs caught a pass and ran it in
in conclusion the starting OL looks best in years, TEs will be fine, WRs should be decent, not bad enough to blame anything on, good enough to getter done, Malik is sharp and crisp with his play, obviously holding back like he’s ready to go a hundred miles an hour
DL, including the ends and backups look good, LBs are heart and soul of the D, Chris Johnson looked the part, the rest of the secondary eval is incomplete with Trader out, but safeties showed up today, didn’t really notice the other CBs
we’re a fragile team in that we lack depth in the secondary and OL, so if we get hit with some injuries there it could be real trouble. Not worried about Ewers, if he’d played with 1st teasers he would’ve been fine
