The big news for the Dolphins preceding the joint practice with the NY Giants was the Miami Dolphins removing WR Chris Bell from the NFI (Non Football Injury) List. That’s great news for Dolphins fans. This doesn’t mean he’s playing Week, but he might. Once a player is healthy, and he’s logged in some contact, and he can handle that contact without any issues, that’s it, he’s ready to go. I can guarantee you the Dolphins are not going to be careless with Chris Bell. He will get playing time here and there and ramp it up to the point where he can be a real contributor by October, providing he’s feeling good.
The other big news is the feisty joint practice between the NY Giants and the Miami Dolphins. Seems like Malik Willis got sacked on every drop back except for one where he got the ball out quickly to RB De’Von Achane who was set free by a big block from TE Will Kacmarek. Achane was off the to the races, and once that happens, Achane doesn’t lose many races. Is it concerning that the O-line took a beating against a very talented Giants front 7? Yes, and no. Let’s see how they look during the game. Yes, it’s a preseason game, but bet your ass the Dolphins will want to look better at home, in front of the fans at Hard Rock. I thought the first series with the starters last week against Washington (who held out 20 or so starters in total) looked great against the Commanders 2nd teamers. I felt like the team look disciplined and organized. We’ll see how they look in Game 2.
Once again, accountability is a strong point with HC Jeff Hafley. You step outside the lines, you get pulled. There are ramifications for your actions. The sooner you learn that, the better off you will be or you will routinely be grabbing pine. There are the advantages of not being in immediate contention. You can penalize your best players if necessary to make a point and set the tone. It’s obviously a refreshing change from the lounge-like atmosphere we had with Mike McDaniel as Head Coach. This is a very young team, and these young players are going to learn to do things the right way. That’s how you build a strong core. Of course you need talent to do that, and despite being cap-strapped by former GM Chris Grier, we re-signed the right veteran players with talent such as RB De’Von Achane, OC Aaron Brewer, and LB Jordyn Brooks.
I would love to see some improvement from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th team players in preseason game 2 at home against the NY Giants. There was quite the dropoff last week at Washington once the starters came out. I’d like it to be a less noticeable that the starters are resting and that some of the 2nd and 3rd teamer’s show up a little better. I’d love to see in an improvement in the pass rush as well, whether it’s Chop Robinson, Joshua Uche, David Ojabo, Robert Beal or Clelin Ferrell. Chop has been getting a lot of hype, but wouldn’t it be great to see him actually sack the QB rather than be in the vicinity, much like his former teammate Jaelan Phillips?
I think this team is going in the right direction, and that’s a great feeling to me. How many wins that translates into is difficult to say, but to think that we shed two veteran Top 30 WR’s, and may have actually drafted their replacements in the very next draft without using a 1st or 2nd RD pick is pretty impressive. Also, don’t count out slot WR Kevin Coleman, who will have a tough time stealing opportunities from WR Malik Washington, but I think he will get some chances, and if he makes the most of them, will see even more opportunities. The 2nd year D-linemen who came from Chris Grier’s final draft are going to get plenty of playing time. DL Kenneth has to be better as a 1st RD pick, but while he’s not playing up to his draft position, 5th RD pick DL Jordan Phillips and 7th RD pick DL Zeek Biggers have exceeded their draft position by a good margin.
We’re not going to see a lot of strategy, in fact, it’s vanilla all the way through the preseason, but once the season starts, we’ll get a much better idea of how Jeff Hafley will implement his chess pieces, all the tweeners like S Kyle Louis, DE/LB Trey Moore, Outside CB and Slot CB Chris Johnson, LB Jacob Rodrigues, S Michael Taaffe. When the cutdowns occur, guys to keep an eye on are LB’s Willie Gay Jr., ILB Tyrel Dodson, and LB Cameron Goode who has special teams prowess, but no much beyond that. I’d like to see TE Seydou Treore show some receiving skills, and I will try to keep a close eye on backup RT acquired in the trade with New England Patriots a week or so ago, RT Caedan Wallace, who has looked good early on. So very important, considering RT Austin Jackson’s track record of missing lots of playing time. Being a Dolphins fan and living in NJ, the Giants are the only other team in the NFL I can root for, but not tomorrow!

I do like the way he plays. I am a little surprised at his quickness out of his stance for a slow guy. He also plays fearless and wants to hit somebody, must be the LB in him. He still needs more experience. I am still up in the air if he makes it or not. If Ben Sims continues to miss time with injury, he just might make it. He will also be a good one to have on ST’s.
He definitely has the mindset and physicality to play the position. He’ll likely have to make the team on STs as well. These are the kinds of guys you root for.

Without paying close attention to the trenches, the only players who stood out to me were WR Coleman, LB Jackson Woodard (again) and 2 of the new LB’s.
Hours before their preseason battle with the New York Giants, the Miami Dolphins released veteran cornerback Nick McCloud, opening up a spot on the 91-man roster.
Then, during the halftime break of the game, Miami claimed cornerback Jai’Onte’ McMillan off waivers.
McMillan, 24, played at TCU from 2021-23 and at Minnesota from 2024-25. In 55 games between the schools, he recorded 56 tackles, four passes defensed, one sack and one interception. He signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent but was cut recently.
At 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, McMillan will compete for a roster spot in South Florida for the rest of camp and the preseason.
DE Mason Reiger was waived from injured reserve with an injury settlement.

Jeff Hafley: All right, you guys want to talk injuries? All right. Trey (Moore), Ronnie (Harrison Jr.) and Ollie (Gordon II) all left the game. I’ll get with the trainers afterward to find out how serious they are. But obviously, none of them came back in the game. I’ll get you the details on that as soon as I find out, and I’ll let you know.
Is there a fear that the Trey Moore injury could be serious long term?
Jeff Hafley: Yeah, I really don’t know. I mean, he was down. We walked him off. And then I really just grabbed Kyle (Johnston) there. You just got to give me time to figure that one out for you.
It seems like just a few days ago that you were talking about how well Trey Moore was doing.
Hafley: Yeah, I was. It’s unfortunate. It’s part of the game. So we’ll see what happens and hopefully we’ll get him back soon.
How would you evaluate your quarterback play?
Hafley: Hard to evaluate. I got to look back at the tape. We dropped a few balls. We made probably some poor decisions at quarterback thinking through the game right now. And then there were some protection issues where we struggled. Let me look at the film and try to get a better idea with where they’re at. Obviously Cam (Miller) got a ton of reps in the first half and Gronk (Mark Gronowski) came in and played the majority of the second. Just really limited snaps. We weren’t on the field very much.
What did you learn about your team overall?
Jeff Hafley: A lot of the guys who were playing, I liked how hard they played. Just the details aren’t good enough right now. And that’s some guys that we’re going to count on for depth, and I told them that at halftime. I said these are important moments. It’s preseason and I want to see who can step up and who we can count on as we get ready to go towards the 53 (man roster). But just the details. The disappointing part of the game is we have two holds on special teams on the returns, which we were backed up early. Then we fumbled going in early. At least we would have had a field goal there but we fumbled. Then we shank a punt. We’re backed up again. So we’re backed up almost the whole first half. So when you try to evaluate it and you’re playing from the -5 in, it’s hard. It’s really hard. It’s hard for Bobby (Slowik) to call it. It’s hard to play it. But those are self-inflicted. That’s what’s disappointing, so we’re not where we need to be. Then the second half we have a false start (and) back up. Then we have a wide receiver hold (and) back up. Then we fumble a snap on third and four. Then we have an illegal gunner rep and we have to re-punt. A third down pass interference and we can’t get off the field. Third and one, we don’t convert and then we drop a punt at the end of the game. So I mean, just rattling those off and playing the game in my head, it doesn’t matter who’s out there. If you can’t do those little things right, you’re not going to have success, and it’s going to be hard to evaluate. I credit the defense. (They had) a lot of short fields, a lot of stops, a lot of times held them to a field goal. I thought they played physical. Shoot, we had a linebacker who I met this morning in my office – Steve (Dix Jr.) came in, met him, and he started the whole second half where we had to tell him the call, he had to give the call, then we had to tell him what to do on every single play. So we were able to play only like two calls in the second half, which has never happened to me in my life. So I just give him credit for going out and fighting. That’s what the preseason is all about, to find out who those guys are. So I’m certainly disappointed, as any competitor would be, and we have work to do.
We didn’t speak to you after the joint practice. Yeah. What was your takeaway from the joint practice overall?
Jeff Hafley: Well, talking about the defense, I thought it was one of our better days on defense. If you turn on that tape, I mean physical. I mean dominant against the run. Aggressive. I thought we got after the quarterback. We played inspiring football on defense that you know made me really proud. I thought it was a great day. A great day on D. Offensively, I thought we came out pretty quick and moved the ball. I thought we popped a nice run where (De’Von) Achane would have scored. We hit a little checkdown down the sideline that would have went for an explosive. Then their pass rush, which I think they have three or four first-round picks, their pass rush came alive. We got to clean some stuff up. There were some busts, there were some Mas (missed assignments). Not good enough. I thought their defense got after us towards that latter part. But great work. I mean they got some really good players over there. I certainly did not like the fighting. That’s not me and that’s frustrating. But I like the way our guys competed. Thanks for bringing that up.
We saw Chris Bell without a red jersey running routes in the pregame. Can you share with us if he has been cleared to return to full practice?
Jeff Hafley: Close. He’s still in the red jersey. So when he takes his red jersey off, he’ll be cleared for contact and we’ll be ready to go. The players are off tomorrow, so we’ll sit down tomorrow. We’ll talk to the trainers and get a glimpse of where he’s at and see if we can kind of ramp him up even more.
Was today about having Chris Bell go through a pregame routine?
Jeff Hafley: Yeah, you nailed it. We just made the decision. I thought it was really good for him. The whole routine is different in this league, and I wanted him to feel it, go through it, so if he doesn’t get to play in a preseason game, when he does play in a real game, it’s not the first time. But he was not going to play today. Just like our guys who played a lot of snaps on Thursday, we weren’t going to play them today.
Between Ollie Gordon II, Jaylen Wright and Carlos Washington Jr., what are your thoughts currently on how your running back room looks behind De’Von Achane?
Jeff Hafley: I thought they ran hard today. We didn’t get many ops, but I have to watch the film. Just thinking back, I thought, Wright had the one kick return. I thought he ran and hit it up in there. I thought Ollie hit a couple of runs. I know he got banged up a little bit there at the end. I thought Carlos hit one. I think it might have gotten called back on a hold where he looked pretty explosive. Just let me watch the tape and give you a better answer. I don’t want to make some stuff up.
We saw there was a player waived earlier today. Did anything unusual happen or was that just a standard transaction?
Jeff Hafley: Just a standard transaction. I found out about it late last night. That’s how our league works. It’s like calling in a linebacker, walking to my office saying, ‘hey, how you doing? My name is Jeff and you’re going to play real football for us today.’ Where else in the world does that happen? I mean, the guy literally showed up this morning, didn’t know his team and was giving calls in the huddle. That iis a story. I respect that though, man. That guy played hard.
What can you say about what Kevin Coleman Jr. showed today?
Jeff Hafley: Yeah, I thought he made some nice catches. I thought he was competitive. I’ll look back to see the blocks. But it’s good to get him back. He’s been very competitive at practice. I love the way he plays. He’s just another guy that I think when I talk to you, I’ll probably have a better view of the game watching the tape.

What do you know about Jai’Onte McMillan?
Jeff Hafley: I just found out. I literally haven’t even had time to think about it. I just talked to the team and they let me know … so I just found out. I’ll talk to Sully (Jon-Eric Sullivan) in a little bit, but I’m excited.
Going back to Kevin Coleman Jr., he had five targets. I don’t know if anybody else had more than one or two. I guess what was the trickiness in spreading the ball around, or was there like a definitive effort to make sure Kevin got work?
Jeff Hafley: Yeah, probably a combination of both. Kevin getting a chance to play. We wanted to see if we could get the ball in his hand. But those are hard questions, right? What was the first read? What was the defense giving us? Where did he go with the ball? Was it there right away? Did he come all the way back to it? And those are things that I got to look at. But we certainly wanted to get him the football.
So, in essence, we need to wait until he watches the tape. lol
In essence, yep….lol. Also, I think it left a bad taste in his mouth.

What’s brutal was watching the last 25 years of “Dolphins’ football.”
Without having expectations this year, one can can “evaluate” and watch the “growth.” That’s exciting to me.
with the depth being so bad it’s really hard to evaluate positive play. Coleman looked great on his long catch, but it seemed like there were 3 guys on him on every route. He’s going to make the team as he should, there’s just no room for guys to maneuver. Cam Miller looked much better even though he didn’t really have open receivers

3 injuries last night didn’t help the depth. Moore’s looked like a high ankle sprain or a broken leg, since he didn’t get carted off think we can remove broken leg and hopefully it was just a bruise. Ollie has an issue with his shoulder, maybe it can be popped back in
there’s too many behind the 8 balls for me at this stage. With no expectations maybe just sitting back and watch the growth was good advice. 2 wins seems like a stretch, unless the youth growth comes quick

I still think we can compete with our starters. We can’t play them too many snaps early in games or 4th qtrs will look like last night
I guess mostly I’m disappointed in how poorly our depth played
through two joint practices and two preseason games. I have seen pretty much what I thought we would see. I don’t know why you guys had some fantasy that this was going to be a good team.
How many of our starters played on offense yesterday? It looked to me like the entire O-line was backups, and the WR’s and RB’s too. Looked mostly the same on defense too. This isn’t how this team was built. We have a very young team, but we will need the starters to be healthy to have any kind of real shot at winning games. If we have to rely heavily on our depth, we won’t win more than 4 or 5 games, if that.

I don’t put too much stock into the Giants game. We played the bottom of the roster. Lots of guys will be handing in their playbook next week based on their performance in that game, but Sully and Haf had to see who belongs and who doesn’t. Our depth will likely be thin this year but we do have a lot of good players. People overreact to a game like that to continue Miami is going to be awful. Nobody played in the game! 🙄

You can say that about any NFL team. Hopefully, we don’t have too many injuries to starters that force us to play kids who aren’t ready to step up yet. If our starting O-line stays healthy the entire season and plays 17 games together, we can win a bunch of games, as long as they’re playing well. We’ll see if either of those can happen.

Malik would have to play like Allen, for us to win 7 games. For me its not a done deal he can’t, but… If we played with those same backups + Malik for 4 qtrs against the Giants last night I think it would’ve been a ball game
unlike with Tua I believe Malik makes thise around him better. When the OL let’s a pass rusher threw he can escape, doesn’t just get into the fetal position like Tua and Tannehill. When he gets out on the edge he allows WRs to uncover. In short yardage there’s the threat of him running. He’s a complete QB, just not polished yet, but there isn’t anything he can’t do
I don’t see any improvement from Jaylen Wright. He’s a shaky receiver and he doesn’t protect the ball well enough. We may not have other options besides Gordon for this year but I can see RB being addressed in the draft next year.

I think it is too early to tell. Those 2 new LB’s Cam Riley and Cam Rice flashed in their first PS1 without even knowing the D. Will have to see how this week of practice goes and PS3 goes. Cam Riley led the team in tackles with 10 and 1 TFL. I think he was even calling plays during the 3rd quarter when Woodard was out getting a rest.
I think Gay gets Moore’s spot as Harrison got dinged up also.
I still have hopes for Woodard. He’s played his ass off both games. Problem for him is he is behind Rodriguez and Dodson.
IMO, of all the defensive rookies, Kyle Louis looks to be the most not ready to make that jump. While he didn’t look lost out there playing safety like he did playing LB, he still looked like he was thinking too much or something like that. He just needs to strap up and go play football.

Tim, you know me, I have been looking at the upcoming RB class. It’s not that great but there are guys I like dotted around all 7 rounds.
Of course, not looking at the guys graded as round 1 or 2 prospects.

was just going to post this, watching now on my TV. Someone lit a fire under his ass. Last week he looked like Jonah circa 2025. Yesterday he looked like Jonah PS1
his technique is crap, as is his hand placement, but he played with intent and a nasty streak.
Priebe seemed to have taken a step back, last week he was the best of the reserves
I think Jonah or Proctor may be our first tackle sub, and we might move DJ inside. Hopefully Wallace can be that guy, but he hasn’t shown it yet

We’ve got a few good off ball LBs, Edge is the question. The secondary isn’t that complicated at this point with the exception of a few. IDL is a strength. We’ve got some dogs there.
Forget about who we have in the back, can we play pass D as a team, especially on 3rd down?

When it comes to RB’s, I have been looking for a tough Achane clone. The one I love is currently projected as a mid 3rd rounder in new Texas RB Raleek Brown. He could be there with our 3rd round pick, but will likely climb draft boards getting more exposure being on Texas. Dude is just as exciting as Achane and has a slightly think build already at 5’9, 195 and runs a 4.32.
He’s also a great receiving RB.

PP, Proctor, Brewer, Jonah, Jackson then Wallace, Priebe, Meyer/Campbell. With Priebe’s ability to play OG/center (he’s taking game snaps there) and they only keep 8, Meyer could be out and Campbell in.
This new and young team is also preparing to start the season out west the first two games of the regular season. Hafley is being challenged right off the bat. But he wants his players to be challenged. That’s how you get better. Not sure how they approach the 3rd PS game.

We are not hearing nothing about any of the other backup OT’s other when Heck screws up and Wallace because we just traded for him. I wonder how the others are doing like Cline, Ayedze and Cox. Out of all of them, I have heard absolutely nothing on Cline during the whole TC. That could be good or bad. lol
