Last game of the Preseason is upon us, and this game, as it always does, will finalize some roster spots for the 53 man roster cutdown, which will be Sunday, August 30th. The Dolphins recently shipped WR Tutu Atwell, formerly of the LA Rams, back to the Rams, for RB Jarquez Hunter. Atwell was one of the few WR’s on the roster with experience, which then leaves the WR with Jalen Tolbert, 4 YR veteran who played the entire 4 years for the Dallas Cowboys as the senior man. Before you get yer panties in a bunch, yes, technically WR Jalen Reagor is the senior man, but he played sparingly the last 2 seasons, just 19 games with 3 starts, while Tolbert has played 30 games with 23 starts. After Tolbert and Reagor, it’s all rookies with Caleb Douglas, Chris Bell and Kevin Coleman. We should get our first look at WR Chris Bell in this evenings game against the Falcons. He’ll probably get a handful of plays but it will be great to see him in action for the first time.
Yes, Tua the Magnificent makes his return to Hard Rock, but thankfully, not wearing aqua, white and orange. No, this time Tua will look even more awkward wearing the Falcons red, black and white uni. Some will boo (I will even though I won’t be at the game and will be watching it many hours later whenever NFLN replays it), but I’ll take solace in knowing I never have to see him under center for the Miami Dolphins ever again. You can love him or hate him, makes no difference to me because he’s gone. I still feel very strongly that if Tua wanted to do the right thing he would have retired, but he selfishly continues to play and shortchange the team he is playing for by playing to protect himself rather than to win. He’s just not going to compete and put himself in harms way which really isn’t fair for the team that he’s leading. I’m not saying he has to be reckless, but you want the guy leading your team to do what it takes to win and we didn’t say that for the last 2 seasons he was here. OK, enough wasted time on Too-ugh.
It is so hard to get a sense of what to expect from this team. Last preseason game we didn’t see our starting QB, Malik Willis, or even our backup QB, Quinn Ewers. We didn’t see many starters along the O-line either, mostly 2nd and 3rd string guys. If you’re going to evaluate the offense, how do you go about doing so fairly? You simply can’t. On defense we also didn’t get to see a lot of starters, but more than on offense for sure. I’ve read that DL Kenneth Grant may miss game 1 of the regular season with an undisclosed leg injury. We haven’t see Jordan Phillips play much either, and my guess is he won’t see much action tonight because he will likely be the replacement for Kenneth Grant if he can’t go or is limited. That would be a D-line in the 4-3 as LE Chop Robinson, LDT Jordan Phillips, RDT Zach Sieler, and RE Joshua Uche. In preseason, we haven’t seen any pass rush, and that’s disappointing, although as we know, everything is vanilla in preseason, but there is still cause for concern. What you have in preseason is just one on ones and we didn’t win many of those.
On the offensive side, I remember loving that first drive in Preseason Game 1 against Washington. While the Commanders sat their defensive starters, our offense which had our starting 5 on the O-line looked very good, and our drive was a TD drive. Everything was clicking, the O-line provided rushing lanes and protected well. After the first drive when the starters came out, the wheels fell off, but that’s not too surprising. Oddly enough, rookie OG DJ Campbell who played his entire career at Texas at RG has been playing LG. So much with playing guys on the sides that they’re comfortable on! In any case, starting RG Jonah Savaiinaea, who looked quite a lot better in his limited action will continue to play RG, where he played during his collegiate career..
I have seen a lot of disappointment regarding our rookie defensive players on our blog, such as S/LB tweener Kyle Louis. The truth is, these guys were drafted with a plan. Louis will be put in situations where he can help and succeed, he will not be starting at either LB or S. My guess is he will come in some obvious passing situations in coverage or as a blitzer and Hafley will keep teams guessing on what he will be doing. It will probably translate, at least early on, to just a handful of plays, besides playing ST’s as well. Same will go for S Michael Taaffe, if he makes the 53. ILB Jordyn Brooks is a little banged up, but you’d have to think that ILB Tyrel Dodson is a guy we can trade for a either a 2027 pick or a player at a different position of need. Of course if Brooks injury is a lingering one, then we may need Tyrel Dodson next to rookie LB Jacob Rodriguez. Rodriguez also struggled some in Preseason, so this was nowhere near a Zach Thomas/Jack Del Rio type of situation at all for those of hoping for an historical replay of that.
Someone on the blog started the Season Record Prediction post, and I said 7 wins. That’s a best case scenario, QB Malik Willis stays healthy and plays 17 games and we don’t have any major injuries. Both the offense and defense have to play well enough to accomplish that, and I think for a team that will be a very young team, a team with an average under 24 years old, would be quite the accomplishment for both Sully and Haf. This team could be very reliant on the 2025 draft class and as well as the 2026 draft class which netted a total of 21 players, 8 last season and 13 this season. RB Jalen Wright continues to disappoint, I think many of us expected him to be at the very least a competent #2 back behind our best player, RB De’Von Achane, but this hasn’t happened. Not sure how much of this factored into the trade with the Rams to acquire RB Jarquez Hunter, who is a bowling ball at 5’9 211. There’s no guarantee Hunter makes the 53, but it absolutely puts doubt as to whether one of the incumbent RB’s Jalen Wright or Ollie Gordon are in danger of getting cut, or if we’re going to carry 4 RB’s and no FB, despite some here falling in love with FB DJ Herman. We all understood the ramifications of having a salary cap crisis, we won’t be picking up expensive vets, but looking for bargains after the cutdowns occur.
For those of you not in Florida, or even in Florida but not in the area where the Dolphins vs Falcons Preseason Finale will be shown, the game will replayed on NFL Sunday August 30th at 6AM EST. I will probably stay away from the blog during and after the game as to not ruin the viewing experience. I want to watch and form my opinions and watch it as if it were live. I’m excited to see WR Chris Bell play, it’s quite the story! Many of us hoped we could see him play this season but didn’t expect to see him activated until October at the earliest. Again, curb your enthusiasm, because he’s not going to be logging tons of playing time, but he will be playing, and that’s great. He can help the team even in small doses, he’s a very talented receiver, and has the size and speed that we desperately need. I’m hoping WR Caleb Douglas is getting the job done while Bell isn’t, and also hope rookie WR Kevin Coleman is as well. I like Malik Washington, but Coleman could be even better. As always, let’s hope we stay healthy in this final game of the Preseason.

Melkart Abou Jaoude-DE/Edge and Jelani Thurman-TE are 2 players I’m keeping an eye on for North Carolina this season. Thurman looked good on the first NC scoring drive with a big catch down the seam.
The DE/Edge position is looking pretty good in next year’s draft. It has good depth, with many players producing, not just projecting, to the next level.
Yes, I forgot to mention Abou Jaoude the other day. I didn’t know anything about Thurman but he looks good.
Both QB’s have been off a little with their accuracy, especially Jaden Craig.

I like Sieler…not ripping at all. In 2025 he was ranked as the 55th out of 134 DL(PFF). That means every other team had at least one DL who was better and 23 teams had 2 DL who were better. Good player…has had a fine career here so far, but is he better than slightly above average? Was last season just a sub optimum year or is he getting older and starting to fade?
He’s going into his 10th. He might have another 5 years, but we need young guys to step up.
I think we have some good young DL. I also don’t care about rankings, I watch the guy play. Sieler can play on my team any day.

I think it all depends on what Sully and Haf want in a QB. The last regime drafted Ewers to become Tua’s backup and to develop in that ‘quick read, get it out fast’ system.
Now that we’ve actually addressed the O-Line, and as highly important (thank God!), Sully and Haf may see Ewers as a non-fit in their system… and that’s not Ewers’ fault.
I dunno, man. If the right QB from another team gets cut on the way down to 53-man rosters, plus Sully and Haf see him as a system fit for us… I wouldn’t bet on keeping Ewers. But I also wouldn’t bet on Ewers getting cut.
We’ll see what happens…

I’m not the least bit scared that our team will suck. Our team will suck bad but it’s a game. I don’t own the Dolphins so nothing they do will embarrass me. Even if I owned the Dolphins, I’d say, I own a billion-dollar franchise, nothing can embarrass me.
We haven’t won a playoff game in 25 years. We hold the longest drought in the NFL. Our teams haven’t been playoff regulars since Marino over 25 years ago. If you aren’t embarrassed by that, then I don’t know how a team that tore down to the studs will embarrass you. It’s expected by the entire NFL and every single expert in the game that we will be a top 3 terrible team. How anyone could be embarrassed if that happens honestly puzzles me. I can see being embarrassed by actions we can control but not by a team we just cheer for.

Why would anyone have expected Quinn Ewers to do better than 1-2 last season? The team was dead, the season was dead, Tyreek Hill was out, and Ewers had a couple of weeks practice with the starters. I thought Ewers did well under those circumstances. I thought it was clear he should have been in competition for the starting job, until they signed Malik Willis
My problem was the overhype he was getting, and some even suggested he was better than Malik Willis, which I found ridiculous. At this stage in his life, he is a developmental backup QB and nothing more, and he sucked at that this year.
I wish him well in Jacksonville.
Willis might be getting some overhype as well. He hasn’t proved he is a quality starting QB. He has only proved he is a decent backup.
During the 2025 NFL regular season, backup quarterback Malik Willis was highly efficient for the Green Bay Packers while filling in for an injured Jordan Love. In 4 games played, Willis completed 30 of 35 passes for 422 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions, earning a stellar 145.5 passer rating.

The fact that Jeff Hafley and Jon Eric Sullivan believes in him is more than enough for me, but as you said, we will find out during the season.
Markey – which team was a better team, the 2025 Miami Dolphins in December, or the Green Bay Packers all season? You’ll find your answer as to why Malik Willis was clearly better than Quinn Ewers. He has more talent than Ewers, but in his 5 year career he’s been nothing but a backup himself. Quinn Ewers was a better young prospect, High School talent than Malik Willis, but Ewers didn’t really develop to his potential.
Malik Willis possesses elite physical tangibles—specifically rare arm strength and dynamic mobility. He is also just 27 years old, in the prime of his career. Exactly what we need in our starting QB.
What I don’t love about the Ewers trade is reports are that the front office was pushing for this, and the coaching staff was OK with having him on the team. now I don’t think he is going to become an all pro quarterback, but I would’ve loved to see the coaches have a bigger saying that decision, if that is indeed true.
They eliminated a distraction, and now some folks will have to accept who the starting QB is for Miami in 2026

Trading Ewers and cutting Dodson has so many fans saying we’re going for 0-17. There’s no middle ground with fans. As soon as the team makes a move they don’t like, it’s a tank. Ewers wasn’t a major move, I thought he had potential but he wasn’t working out well this preseason and in camp, and Dodson was probably not going to start here because they want to play Rodriguez, just like once Willis was signed any chance of Ewers actually competing for a starting job kind of went out the window.
I think Ewers was just a better fit for Mike McDaniel’s scheme and does not possess the skill set that Willis does.
Steve – I’m sure you’re right, they probably did try to trade him. The problem with teams knowing you’re just going to release a player is they may not get that player anyway unless they’re near the top of the order of claims.
I’m sure they tried to trade Dodson. Every team knows this time of year teams are trying to trade before releasing a player. We’re seeing a bunch of trades like that. We just did it with Ewers and McCord.
This is how I view this team at the moment. I believe we’ll be competitive but not sure how many games we win unless young players including rookies step up big. I like a lot of the potential we have so we’ll have to wait and see. This idea that we have no talent is absurd though.
That said we all know this is a rebuild with the exception of some core vets. FinsUp!!!

Kyle McCord was materially better than Tyrod Taylor in the preseason. The second-year quarterback, a former sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025, played 79 preseason dropbacks. He had a 102.4 passer rating, a 5.4% big-time throw rate, and a 1.2% turnover-worthy play rate.

I didn’t see much upside in Gronowski at Iowa, but he is also a good fit for what I assume we’ll be doing on offense….which I’m guessing will be similar to what Iowa has done for the past 30 years! He definitely needs time to develop though.
I know football is a business but maybe sometimes teams cut guys to let them decide their own fate. Foregoing a very late round pick may be worth it to build a reputation as an organization that treats players right.

Dolphins released DL Fatorma Mulbah, who had a solid preseason. So that leaves Sieler, Kenneth Grant (injured at the moment; week to week), Biggers, Jordan Phillips, Keith Cooper Jr. in that DL room… Matthew Butler was released this morning, as we noted earlier today.
I’m completely baffled that we outright cut Tyrel Dodson. He’s a decent starter in the NFL, not some kind of 3rd-string roster fodder.

I can’t do it because I have no idea how our young players are going to produce. But I like the upside with quite a few guys. The play of Willis is the key. He’s the QB. I think Achane could have a monster season. Our young DL is another area that makes or breaks us.

Right now it looks like we have 5 IDL. Based on the numbers game we’re going to be keeping a decent amount of Edge and ILB. Thinking we’re going to be playing nickel often. 4-2-5 mixing up blitzes, zone and man. The Packers played the most nickel last year and Hafley was the DC. Not difficult to see how things are shaping up.

Randy’s theory holds water. Sometimes, you just do right by a player and that buys you a good rep with other players and your team becomes a destination that players want to come to. It does make sense to me. We’ll never know either way because no one will ever come out and say that, but I think he’s right.

Seriously, Tyrel Dodson is a starter on nearly every NFL team right now but for a few.
Dodson and Butler were surprises. Butler struggled a bit in PS2 and I think that opened the door for Cooper who looked good in every PS game.

2.9 mil is not a lot of money, but that is what Dodson would have costed a team in a trade. Of course, teams know they will be able to sign him for vet minimum now. If a team picks him up off waivers they still pick up that 2.9m contract. It doesn’t mean Sully didn’t do his job, it just means another team wanted him but was not willing to give up any capital.

I have to say that Woodard’s play also had something to do with cutting Dodson. Dodson was going to be a F/A next year anyway. Might as well keep the 24yo player who is solid and continues to get better.

With the cuts made over the last 2 days we have cleared about 3.5 million. That should put us around 20 mil in available cap. McCord’s cap hit is only 885K for us. He’s only under contract for this year but does become a restricted F/A next year.

I felt that way about him for the last 2 years… especially to reunite him with Tua. However, I don’t think Neal is taking his job very seriously.

It was a player for player trade, no picks. I think the Rams didn’t want to give up a pick for him and this allowed us to unload his 100% guaranteed contract instead of eating it all as dead money.

Waiver wire claims for all players cut today have to be in by noon tomorrow. If you claim anyone, they have to replace someone on the 53. After the noon cutoff, players can be signed the practice squad.
For our practice squad, I think they bring back QB Cam Miller instead of Gronk. That’s just my feeling.
