2026 Season – Game 1 – Dolphins @ Raiders

Get ready Dolphins fans! Week 1 of NFL Football is here and we will finally get to see the team so many experts are predicting to have a miserable season. Those same experts most likely also had the Los Angeles Rams going undefeated, but we all know how that turned out. Whatever the win total is for our Miami Dolphins, I want to see a competitive team, a tough team that can play in any conditions, hot or cold, and a team that no team will want to play. Those things can happen and we can still have a losing season. The average age of players on the 2026 Miami Dolphins is 24 years old. We all know why, and how we got here. Those problems have been removed and the cap issues we had are in the process of being corrected. I’m truly excited to see what our team looks like this week against the Las Vegas Raiders. The point spread at the moment of writing is Raiders -3. That’s pretty even up, considering the Raiders are home.

There have been a lot of surprises for our gameday roster, nothing more surprising than rookie WR Chris Bell not only not being on IR/Return but also the fact that he’s in the starting lineup. Both rookie 3rd RD Picks WR Caleb Douglas and WR Chris Bell have been named as starters. You have to be excited about that, even if WR Chris Bell is at about 85% because of his previous injury. The Dolphins aren’t being reckless, they’re just putting their best players out there. Bell would not be out there if he wasn’t ready. The late cut of ILB Tyrel Dodson was the other surprise, which of course thrusts rookie ILB Jacob Rodriguez into the starting lineup as well. This is a young team, and we all know young teams make mistakes. We also know young players bring energy and excitement, and I expect that to the be the case with our Dolphins.

All of us here know very little about what we’re going to see on offense and defense simply because we haven’t yet seen anything. We haven’t seen our starting offense except for the opening drive of PS Game 1. We haven’t seen most of our starting defense either. To highlight this, DT Zeek Biggers has yet to play a snap in 2026, didn’t participate in any of the PS games. I think this can only help us in this first matchup because the Raiders really have no idea what they are facing, besides a young team. Regardless, execution is key, and despite perhaps have a leg up due to the mystery of what we’re doing, we still have execute the gameplan better than our opponent. We’ll see how that turns out on Sunday at 4:25PM.

I think overall the one unit that was letdown early and through most of the season was the O-line. Oddly enough I feel like the O-line might be our better unit. I think Patrick Paul is a solid LT, I believe rookie LG Kadyn Proctor will be a tremendous upgrade over last year’s starter Jonah Savaiinaea. OC Aaron Brewer is close to an All Pro C. At RG, 2nd year man Jonah Savaiinaea has looked more confident and more physical and considerably better than he played last season. At the moment, RT Austin Jackson is healthy, and as long as that continues, he should supply average to a little above average play there. Rookie TE Will Kacmarek is nicked up, so I don’t know how impactful he will be this week. He’s our best run blocking TE by far, but w’ll see early on how much he is used, and that will likely tell us the story of how nicked up he actually is. TE Greg Dulcich is a decent receiver, but he’s not a blocking TE, and the other 2 TE’s on the roster, rookie 5th RD pick Seydou Traore and rookie pickup TE Justin Joly is not know for his blocking skills either. I know we’re looking to be more physical, so FB DJ Herman may see action and supply us with some much needed additional blocking at the LOS.

The other huge Wild Card is our QB. QB Malik Willis is a significantly more athletic Qb than former starter Tua Tagovailoa. He can be dangerous running the football, although I’m sure we won’t be gameplanning to have QB Malik Willis running all day. He may have to be running out of necessity if the O-line is struggling, but I don’t believe he will be tasked to run as part of the offensive gameplan. I can’t wait to see him play, it will be so refreshing to have a guy back there capable of making things happen when the play breaks down. I think our defense is also much maligned because of what is perceived to be a lack of pass rushing prowess. I think that’s a fair assessment. We don’t have any proven pass rushers on our D, but 3rd year pro Chop Robinson has added some muscle, and maybe this is the year he takes off. DT Zach Sieler led the Dolphins that are still on the roster with 5.5 sacks. Chop Robinson added only 4 sacks last year. Who knows what DE/LB Josh Uche will bring to our defense. Supposedly he also bulked up some so we’ll see if pays dividends. We will have a very young DL rotation with the exception of DT Zach Sieler. We’ll see a lot of 2nd year players DT Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers, along with 2nd yearDT Keith Cooper, and veteran DE Robert Beal.

The secondary will be a young secondary, and again, a few second year players will be called upon to make an immediate impact. At CB, 4th year CB Juju Brents will line up on one side (Left) with 2nd year CB Jason Marshall on the right side. At safety, once again, it will be another member of the 2025 Draft class with SS Dante Trader starting and then 6th year vet Zayne will be starting at FS, but don’t be surprised if we see a fair amount of two rookies, S Michael Taaffe, and S/LB Kyle Louis is certain situations. What those situations are, however, we have no idea because we haven’t yet seen it happen. At LB we’re about as solid a unit as can be with LB Jordyn Brooks returning. On the inside will be rookie ILB and 2026 2nd RD pick Jacob Rodriguez. At the other outside LB will be returning vet LB Willie Gay. Jordyn Brooks will be on the weak side while Gay will be on the strong side. In nickel situations, we’ll see rookie 1st RD Pick CB Chris Johnson.

Yes, I’ve seen the hubbub about if the Dolphins can’t beat the Raiders this week, they will undoubtedly go winless for the season. I think that’s just plain silly. It’s week 1 for a young team, with a new Head Coach, with a bunch of players that really haven’t played together yet in game action. With all that taken into context, I think you have to give this team a little leeway if things don’t start swimmingly. If somehow it does start well, I’d think you’d have to give HC Jeff Hafley a whole lot of credit for that. Odds are there will be kinks to work out and a fair amount of rookie and young player mistakes. How many of those will have a legitimate impact on our success. You have to think there will be bumps, but I also recall how well we looked on the very first drive of the preseason, the only drives where we had most of our starters, and I thought we looked remarkably well. Let’s hope that’s precisely how we look on Sunday!

To clarify, Chris Bell is at 85% in football shape, not 85% in his recovery from injury.

BTW, anyone who watched lasts night’s game, did you notice Jack Jones was solid? He’s the backup LCB for the 49er’s.

Granted he only had 8 snaps on pass plays but only gave up 1 rec for 5 yards and made the tackle with no YAC and had 2 other nice pass breakups in those snaps.

49er’s signed him for the vet minimum at 1.2m. I still don’t know why we didn’t re-sign him.

I didn’t see the Miami Hurricanes game last night, but I’m taping it on replay very early Sunday morning. At least I only need to see the first half, since all the starters were out by then. They did do the mercy rule in the 4th. Very ugly, I hear. LOL

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m looking forward to see how Johnson looks. I don’t think he’s been tested in the PS against our WR corps. Finding a true top tier CB would be awesome. I hope he looks the part.

  11. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

they keep talking about the Waddle trade for some reason

we drafted Johnson and Bell with the picks, essentially 2 1st rd picks

I’m looking forward to this new era. Go Phins!!!

  13. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Nice article Mike, your homerism is borderline with Tim and I🤪

I found your Chris Johnson comment almost footnote-ish, like he’s CB3 and just playing the slot

Most offenses can regularly move the ball, when the OL looks good. I can’t imagine us not being able to move the ball in this instance

You spoke of Malik running, almost in the break in case of emergency fashion. I think he’ll scramble first to buy time to throw, but run opportunistically, basically taking what they give him

We’ve all seen recent playoff games between KC, Buffalo and Baltimore come down to 4th qtr must have drives, where Mahomes, Allen and Jackson get it done with their legs. I see Malik as someone who fits that mold in close games. He’s our ace in the hole

  14. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My problem with the 0-17 talk is the disregard for the fact, that after we play half the season we’ll have rookies, many of them, that won’t exactly be rookies because of all the PT they will have gotten

Jonah last season was awful, but even he improved quite a bit in the second half. At some point the things will go our way enough to win some games, and I believe the effort will be there throughout the season. Lack of pressure, to not have to win should also help

  15. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

One matchup in the trenches that has me worried is Chop Robinson against right tackle DJ Glaze. I know Robinson is coming off a down season where he battled injuries, but his speed and athleticism when fully healthy could give Glaze some issues. The latter has struggled with that in pass protection throughout his career, and Robinson got the best of him a few years ago when they faced off against each other in college. Penn State’s athletic pass-rushers always gave the Maryland product trouble.

Since we’ve covered every season-ending record from 1-16 to 9-8, I’m going to repeat one of them with a 4-13 record this year.

Brian, KJ Duff went off again last night. He now has 17 rec for 333 and 5 TD’s in Rutgers 2 losses.

  18. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Louisville QB Lincoln Kienholz looked good again last night though this time vs a lesser opponent. He will definitely be on the radar for 2028 as I doubt he would enter the next draft. The kid from Pitt, QB Mason Heintschel will be another to watch for 2028.

Hafley showing how simple football really is. 👍

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Sporting News

Analysis: Kirk Cousins – not Fernando Mendoza – will get the start for the Raiders, in a matchup that features first-year coaches Klint Kubiak and Jeff Hafley. Ashton Jeanty should have success against a Miami run defense that allowed 132.4 yards per game last season, but Malik Willis keeps this one close.

really? This is why national guys are retarded. So because early last season our run D was a mess its somehow going to be the deciding factor tomorrow

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

in years past our DL rotation seemed odd, when Wilkins and cook weren’t playing 95% of the snaps. The substitution patterns were odd, we’d often see too many backups on the field at the same time. Based on what I’ve seen in PS and practice, I think we’ll use more of a situational rotation

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think our run D is going to be very good, with the addition of Rodriguez, then Phillips taking 2 blockers, and of course Brooks. At DE I expect to see 1 big DE and 1 passrusher 75% of the time, unless its a must pass situation. Biggers, Grant and Herring will be the 75%

  21. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve,

I have no idea what’s going to happen, but Jeanty is a problem on the ground and the air. Like I said, this OL isn’t great, but neither was our run defense. If we can contain Jeanty, I’ll take my chances stopping Cousins.

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know it is a tune up game for Indiana against Howard U. but Charlie Becker has 3 receptions for 3 TD’s. lol

  24. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,

Very true. The Raiders held opponents to a 3.9 average last year, but they gave up a lot of rushing TDs. I doubt either team is gonna throw a lot if they don’t have to, so it should be interesting to see who wins the LOS, as always.

    Dante Moore, you failed.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Yes, a major upset, no doubt, but let’s not get carried away and call it one of the greatest upsets in history.

With that said, Dante Moore will definitely move down on my QB draft list.

  41. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I said quite a while back Donte Moore has to prove he can put the team on his back. He still doesn’t.

Mestemaker still tries to force the ball taking risks though the 2 INT’s he threw today were tipped balls. He played a tough game today and laid it out on the field. He needs to get better with his footwork and decision making.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

It will work its way out by the end of the year, and I will probably end up with only 2 or 3 QBs on my Miami draft list.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I will have some day 3 guys also. I think Mestemaker should probably stay in college 1 more year but who knows.

      • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I’m hoping my 2 or 3 QBs will be for a backup QB, not a starter. LOL

Tonight is a big game for both Arch and Sayin. It can really set the tone for the upcoming season for either player and their team.

I would say Carr, Manning, and Mensah are my top 3 right now in the middle of week 2.

  42. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We will have to see what Manning is made of tonight. I like what I see From Carr and Mensah so far, but it is a long season ahead.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Yep, Carr, Manning, and Mensah right now for me too. Julian Sayin’s size still bothers me, plus he hasn’t handled pressure well at all.

  43. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

There was a play there in the second half where it was 3rd down for Oregon and they needed the 1st down. The rush (only a 4 man rush) started to get to Moore and instead of trying to escape the pocket he ducked down and waited for the sack to happen. It gave me a serious Tua flashback.

I hate it because he is a good QB with a great arm.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Yea, I thought Moore would have gotten a better start to the season, but that’s why we wait until draft time to make our final lists.

      • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

TBH, I don’t even like talking about QBs for the draft. I prefer to talk about OL, TE, RB, and defense. LOL

  44. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

We all want a smart QB with a good arm and accuracy, but I’m also going to be paying close attention to how they perform in big games this year, how they handle defensive pressure, and how they respond to adversity.

Heck, in a perfect world, Willis will be our future QB, and we will just be looking for a good backup. Now back to OL and defense!!!

  45. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Moore and the Ducks are playing him out of the 1st round

  46. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What about Julian Sayin? Just sayin! lol

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I don’t like his size, and he needs to prove he can handle defensive pressure when playing the good teams in the playoffs. Indiana and Miami exposed him last year, but he still has time to prove himself this season.

Yes, a major upset, no doubt, but let’s not get carried away and call it one of the greatest upsets in history.

    ————

That’s why I put it in quotes. It was stated that it was one of the greatest upsets in college football history.

I didn’t say it, others did.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I saw the quotes, still doesn’t change my response. It’s an overreaction when compared to all the great upsets in the history of college football.

Well, this Texas/Ohio St game hasn’t started the way I like, but at least Jeremiah Smith looks good.

  50. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Unbelievable, Texas. Dropped a TD now, to go along with 2 turnovers by the RB and WR.

  51. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

These college QBs had better start picking it up because I’m finding it hard to pass on Jeremiah Smith if we are picking that high.

  52. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Texas is crapping the bed big time. Mental mistakes, turnovers, dropped passes…

  53. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Julian Sayin is one of my favs, but like rich said it’s his size. He 6’1, so bigger than Willis. lol His size wouldn’t bother me as much if he were a mobile QB but he is not really that mobile. He’s probably the best in college football at reading his progressions. He also has a very good deep ball. He has a good quick release.

My best comparison for Julian Sayin is Brock Purdy with less mobility.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Sayin might be the most NFL ready though.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

There’s a lot to like about Sayin, but he does seem to have the cleanest pocket in college football. It’s not going to be like that in the NFL. Still, he looks better than anyone so far except for maybe Mensah and Carr. Though those two haven’t played a team of the caliber of Texas.  With that said, I still think he needs to prove he can do these things when there’s pressure on him, like in the Indiana and Miami games last year.

  54. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Great ball placement on that TD to Jeremiah Smith!

  56. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

This Ohio St O-line is dominating Texas’ defense. WoW!!!

  58. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Iowa State players on a punt coverage play grabbed the Iowa punt returner who was letting it bounce and tried to throw him into the ball. Scrum ensues. Then, one ISU player shoved his head into the ground as he tried to get up. No flag! I love football.

  59. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Arch, Arch, Arch, not looking like a top 10 QB to me.

I know Sayin and Smith are very, very good and exciting to watch, but the reason for Ohio State’s dominance is their O-line and defense tonight.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I’m just not seeing it with Arch Manning. I just don’t think he’s a top-10 pick. Hopefully, it clicks at some point for him this year.

“Dick” became a nickname for “Richard” through a medieval English rhyming‑nickname pattern, Richard-Rick-Dick much like William-Will-Bill and Robert-Rob-Bob.

In Middle English, people often created playful, rhyming diminutives from shortened names. A common linguistic habit was to swap the first consonant to form a rhyme.

The nickname Dick appears in records by the 16th century, and soon became a generic term for “man” or “fellow,” as seen in expressions like “every Tom, Dick, and Harry.”

By the late 19th century, “dick” gained its anatomical slang meaning, which contributed to the nickname’s decline in popularity.

I have a friend named Jen. If you want to see a 50+ year old woman go batshit crazy, call her Jenny.

No way this team will be as bad as Cleveland…..I hope. Watson is terrible.

  73. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Elephant Rider,

How can Watson still be expected to play well without multiple massages every week? I feel his pain. Man can’t live on ice tubs alone.

I saw the quotes, still doesn’t change my response. It’s an overreaction when compared to all the great upsets in the history of college football…

    ———-

I very DO agree with ya, Rich. It was a knee-jerk reaction by the announcers when they said it. Just wanted to be sure you knew that wasn’t coming from me, man!

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

You’re good, M. I know you. It was a major upset, just not history-making. LOL.

Can you believe the #1 and #2 both lost yesterday? It’s going to be a crazy year, I hope.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

LOVE IT, so far! And PSU is still undefeated, to boot!

It will be interesting to see which QBs rise to the top and see those who wilt this college football season.

    How did Tua become Overpaid?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The etymology goes way back to the year 2024, when then Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grief and HC Capri McD decided to extend then QB Tua Tagovailoa with a four-year, $212.4 million contract.

      Hence the name, Overpaid Tagovailoa.

If Cam Ward stops playing patty-cake, the Titans could beat the stej today.

If the Texans’ Defense steps up, the Bills could go down today.

Wouldn’t it be somethin’ if we beat the Raiders and ended up #1 in the AFC East before the day is over?

  77. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve been watching the Ravens-Colts game. The Ravens look as good as ever, even though John Harbaugh is no longer their HC.

Something that surprised me? I had no idea Derrick Henry had that many career rushing TDs. He’s now tied with Marcus Allen with 123 rushing TDs (#3 of all-time), trailing only LT and Emmitt Smith.

  78. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Anybody else notice there’s still plenty of illegal forward motion going on? I’ve seen it about half a dozen times already this year. I think the NFL is okay with it. It favors offense and keeps them high scores going.

    MikeE,

So not true. I clearly remember Tua stumbling past the LOS and for some reason running straight into a defender headfirst and getting concussed. Lol
