Coaching staff set for 2020, roster still under renovation

The Dolphins brought back long time NFLer Chan Gailey to be the Dolphin Offensive Coordinator. After Patrick Graham, 2019’s Defensive Coordinator left at the end of the season to take the same position as DC for the New York Giants. The Dolphins then promoted Josh Boyer who was cornerbacks coach and defensive passing game coordinator for the Dolphins last season. Special Teams coach Danny Crossman returns, I think he did a great job last season. Wide Receivers coach Karl Dorrell is also back for 2020. Running Backs coach Eric Studesville also returns for 2020, despite the struggles of our run game which ended up with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick as the leading rusher. Ugh! Rob Leonard returns as Linebackers coach and Steve Marshall will be the Offensive Line coach. George Godsey will return as Tight Ends coach and the development of Mike Gesicki was a job well done.

It’s a little disconcerting to me that Patrick Graham left to take the same position with the NY Giants. No promotion, just a lateral move. It hurts a little, because defections bug me, when players or coaches just choose not to be with our team. Jim Caldwell also appears to be completely out of the picture now for whatever that’s worth. It’s not that Graham was so great last year and Caldwell basically stepped away early in the process due to “health reasons” last year so not a big deal.

To the roster. There will be so many additions to the team in the coming months of Free Agency, followed by the Draft and then once again followed by Free Agency. That will be huge. What’s as important are the subtractions, most notably Xavien Howard. What his situation is exactly is unknown, but I like to plan for the worst. Nik Needham and Ken Webster were our starting CB’s to end the season, and it’s not that they were bad, but if Howard is out for most or all of 2020 and maybe even off the roster period, we have a lot of work to do at CB. We all know OL, DL, DE, QB. RB, S were already big needs and now we may need to add CB.

The good news is we have tons of cap space for free agency. According to Spotrac.com we have the highest available cap space in 2020 with $94.3M. I think the last time I brought this up we were just behind the Colts who are now 3rd. Regardless, we are flush with money to spend freely to improve the roster. Then we have 14 picks upcoming in the 2020 draft. 3 first round picks and 2 second round picks is a good way to get that started. We know the roster will be very different and I hope that GM Chris Grier and HC Brian Flores can start building a winner.

GO DOLPHINS!!
