WEDGE SCOUTING REPORT: KEVIN WHITE

Wedge ID

KWhite1

Kevin White is a gifted big physical receiver from West Virginia.  He is 6-3, 210 lbs.  the first thing most people think about White is that he will be a heck of a redzone threat – which is true as evidenced from the photo above.  But first let’s talk about his background.

Although a talented high school prospect, White did not have the academic credentials to play Division 1 football out of high school.  So he went to Junior College, which probably explains why no one heard about him two years ago.  When he transferred to West Virginia he had a modest junior year catching 35 passes for a little over 500 yards.  But in his senior season he was as powerful Supernova – he exploded on the scene catching 109 passes, for 1447 yards and 10 TDs.  Holy Quasars!!!

That might worry some scouts.  He is a bit of a one year wonder.  In an interview with Dane Brugler, White explained that in 2013 he didn’t know what to expect but with a lot of offseason training and working on his routes he was able to dramatically improve.

NCAA Football: Oklahoma at West Virginia

Whatever the reason for his dramatic improvement was, he became quite a threat when he he had the football in his hands in 2014.  10 TDs!  I would love to see Ryan Tannehill throwing to a big WR like that who can run after the catch.  Considering how many shorter routes the Lazor offense has, this is exactly the kind of receiver the Dolphins can use.

KWhite2

What White does really well is attack the ball at the point of attack.  I expect this guy to jump well over 40″ at the combine.  He can go up there and fight for the ball.  He consistently catches the ball away from his body.  He has hands the size of a Zorracian Moon Octopus and uses them to catch the ball.

But its more than raw physical talent.  Its technique this guy is a craftsman! He has excellent hand technique.  Its going to be really hard for DBs to press White in the NFL.  White is a huge Larry Fitzgerald fan and models his game after Fitzgerald and while he is a possession receiver in the same way Fitzgerald is, some scouts think a better comparison is Ashlon Jeffrey.

   KWhiteCannon

But if I had to compare Kevin White to any weapon I would compare him to a H-Alpha Cannon!  Big Hops, Big Hands, Great Hand Technique – BOOM!!!  Anyone knows that is an H-Alpha Cannon.

Varga is awesome. I have had a chance to see him live several times and the kid is a beast. Good receiver out of the backfield as well. My next door neighbor coaches secondary at Yale and he had lots of good things to say about Varga.

    • rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

The kid is a triple threat. …run, catch, and block. He’ll make some team very happy come draft time.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He can block. Also keep an eye on Yale’s qb for next year’s draft. Morgan Roberts. He transferred from Clemson 2 years ago and really can play. He had an excellent season. Yale really surprised a lot of people this year after being a pretty bad team for a number of years. I like the head coach. Tony Reno. He runs a wide open offense over there.

  13. rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

In a perfect world, I would have gotten Dawson in the 2nd and Tomlinson in the 3rd.

Can’t vote for a guy that was suspended 4 games (Jones), Wake disappears in too many big games, Grimes and Mitchell aren’t bad choices but Grimes was pretty average the second half of the season and Mitchell was part of a unit that flat out collapsed the second half. I voted for Mitchell by default but I’d probably pick Jelani Jenkins only because our LB unit would have been screwed without him.

Glad to see that Branden Albert wants Mike Wallace back. You can’t underestimate the value of that. Very happy to see that, and I’d say it’s a very strong indication he will be back. Work things out, it’s the right thing to do.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Unless it creates a cluster fuck in the locker room!
I’m not a Philbin basher but he doesn’t seem to have the pulse of the players?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not sure if Wallace will be back or not — we all saw what happened with Vontae. Pretty positive though that he wouldn’t if he could be cut with a small cap hit though.

  40. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Nice piece Pig — and what a shocker that your first prospect looked at is a wideout. 🙂

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Wyo

Philbin is going to have to learn more about Coach-player relationships. If the players like Mike, I don’t think it will it will tear the team apart necessarily, but it won’t win him any points either. He has to do what’s best for the team, but he has to be very careful in his judgement on this one. Not only would it make some guys on the team unhappy, but we lose a lot of production, and I think potential production as well, and it won’t be easy to replace right away.

  42. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Danny Shelton is 6’2″ and 339 lbs. That is pure NT size, yet he is athletic enough that he played both DE and DT at Washington. That’s impressive.

  43. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

    Good morning :-[
I used to watch so much football, college and pro. I just can’t do it any more. I don’t know exactly why. Tim had mentioned a few things I agree with like Joe this game is being officiated; having a family and different responsibilities had added to it; besides that, I used to go out and actually, you know, play a little football with done friends. Interestingly enough, I think my willingness to consume has gone down in relation to the increase in access- when we were younger, we had our local paper, football magazines we could buy at the bookstore (Smith’s was one of them, I think), and of course what would come on the tv on the weekend. Since those days we have 24/7 sports networks dedicated football, internet, sports bars, blogs.. I may have to consider the overabundance of availability as a contributor to my lack of excitement. I used to have to do some work- now, I just have to say, “Suri- latest info on Miami Dolphins…”

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

      Joe this? Really?
      Insert “how this”
There are several others, but I am only halfway through my first cup

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Try — maybe I was more excited when I was younger, but in those days I got to see the Phins 3-5 times per year in the NY area. I’ll take any time after sports bars showing the Phins and then Direct TV came into my life.

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – That’s another huge reason not to cut him. You eat too much cap space anyway. I think the only way you get rid of Wallace is through a trade, and that’s extremely unlikely at his bloated salary.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I agree. I am hoping that Philbin and him come to an agreement, but not like players don’t get sometimes when it doesn’t make sense for on the field.

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Try – I have definitely lost my fervor for all things sports. I used to watch 100-120 Met games, and now since they haven’t been very competitive, I’ve lessened that substantially. I would watch 20-25 Knicks games, but not anymore. I still watch every Dolphins game, but if there were more than 16, and they weren’t playing well, I’d probably cut down on that as well. I think it’s normal. I’ve become more skeptical about sports, and how fair and on the up and up things are. That hurts my interest too.

  46. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

    Stanger, Mike,
Do either of you think it may be, in part, because we no longer relate to those playing? I don’t mean relate in any one way (age, ethnicity, age, lifestyle, etc.)?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe, but it was changing for me even as I was still playing rugby, which I did till I was 33.

A big difference for me was that age factor though. Will admit there is a difference as it changed from looking at those on the field from gods to men to young men to now kids. Same as with my doctors. That first time you walk and realize yours is younger than you is a moment.

  47. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Can someone rah out to boulder? He’s lost and can’t find his way here

  48. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think Philbin has to learn to deal with different types if players too

But I think he was right for pulling Wallace who was making little effort in final game

Good for Philbin for that move

Now we are stuck with a diva
He needs to deal with it

    Unless
We got a really good offer from another team

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Until you started bringing it up, I never really thought about it, but I think you make a good point: part of being a coach is being able to deal with different personalities, and the way it had been portrayed it would appear as if Philbin wants only choir boys, which just is not reasonable. They have to be willing to work as a team, and they have to be willing to take responsibility for their craft, but the don’t all have to like to go to church.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Coaches want their guys
        And I understand that
I think he has gone a little too Boy Scout though

I think he just to tolerate some different personalities a little more
Other coaches have gone through that before

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Agree that he could loosen up a bit, I’d rooting for a team that is like the old Raiders of the Ryan-coached Jets. I like to like the guys on my team.

I’d say age more than anything. I think with age comes wisdom, and with wisdom, you see that it’s not really worth wasting so much time on this stuff. That’s what I think, can’t say that applies to everyone though.

  51. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I see both of your points (reasons for waning interest in sports). You both more or less say age, and I have considered that alone and in conjunction with other potential reasons. It all leads me back to the ability to relate- I find it harder and harder to do so.

  52. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Try — never been particularly religious but when I was a kid about the only time I prayed was to make a deal with god in order for the Pirates to get a key hit back in the ninth inning. Those days are over……might just be the way it is.

  53. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I used to get really excited when the off-season college and pro magazines would come out ( Street and Smith’s?). If it had a Hurricane or a Dolphin on the cover, even better. I also liked when the Dolphin Digest would come in the mail. It was usually a week late, for some reason, but it made the team seem more a part of my life, like I was one of an exclusive few who had inside info on the team. Lol

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I got to say, if it was all a bunch of Mormons playing and not people of different backgrounds and ethnic makeup, I still don’t know that I’d feel any different, although I admit the so-called “thug lifestyle” is not something that attracts me, either, but that is mostly because that is a generation and a half behind mine.

  60. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Trypod,

It is a combination of things mentioned above: advancing age, us maybe not relating to the players now as they are much younger, the sports industry becoming more like a business now, etc. But Mike briefly touched on the biggest factor – success, or the lack thereof. If a team starts winning, fans are much more invested in their teams. If your team is very succesful, you make a much greater effort to watch them, and your interest is much greater as well. I for one can tell you that I have watched more Islanders games this season that the past five combined.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Joe is still striving for that winning 9-7 mark, then they will come…lol 😉

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

For sure on that. Always amazed at how many fanatic fans a team has when they hit the playoffs, even if they can only name like five players on the team.

That’s not us for sure…….but we’ve all seen the swings in intensity with our group btwn winning and losing streaks.

And I’m the same way with other sports. Been following the Pirates a whole lot more the last two years. Sure I knew the players, but last year I bought the MLB package.

  61. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“This comes as no real surprise as Clay and DT Jared Odrick are Miami’s top two free agents. Clay is coming off a down year where he fought through a season-long knee injury. It should help lower his price.”

Whether to us or someone else, what do you guys think Clay gets? I’m thinking in the four-to-five mil range.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

That;s exactly where I was thinking Stanger- about $4million.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I’d keep my offer real reasonable, if he wants too much then give that money to Julius Thomas or Gresham.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I left out the most important part of that quote — the Dolphins have expressed “privately” that they want to re-sign Clay.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

How does someone privately express something? Isn’t the mere fact that you are expressing something inherently not a private act?

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I’m sure they do, why not, he knows the new offense, he should come very reasonable to stay home, he’s proven to be a good receiver, and he just needs to prove he can stay healthy a full season.

  62. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

No one commented on Ol Willie Nelson’s yearbook photo of him as a football player back in 1948…maybe OD will appreciate it 😉

  63. Ken's avatar Ken says:

What’s up FUers? I just liked saying that. LOL.

  64. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think Wallace’s status is just based on Philbin. I think it’s the entire org including his teammates. He quit on his team. This isn’t about Philbin can’t handle egos, it’s about a player willing to quit.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I think it’s a moot point regardless. I can’t see us getting rid of him in any capacity. Albert probably doesn’t feel as strongly as he wasn’t playing in the last game.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Ever the Philbin apologist…jk/bb…I think it will be discussed by all the decision makers, not just Philbin. Plus again, as we know, the contract situation should also play a part in that decision, along with any offers or not.

I don’t know if we keep Wallace or not but if I am a betting man I say we don’t. Philbin has proven to be not shy of getting rid of players he sees as a problem child and as evidenced by what he did with Chad Johnson, he doesn’t really care what the other players think. If we wants to move somebody he will. That all said I don’t know what will happen. Maybe Wallace had a come to Jesus meeting with Philbin. We will find out.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Was Gibson in on the meeting? 😉

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I think we keep him one more year, and then he’s gone. I just can’t see a scenario where it makes sense to get rid of him. He’s not THAT bad where we have to jettison him immediately,

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Lets see what happens in FA and draft. We don’t have to make a move but don’t be surprised if we target a WR or 2 in FA and draft. If so Wallace may well be gone.

  66. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Was reading where Gurley is projected by several scouts as a day 2 pick right about where the Phins are picking…he could provide a nice trade down scenario for us by a playoff team hungry for a RB.

  67. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Fans on the blog have been saying for years that our team quit at the end of the year when they finished poorly. I’ve always said if that’s the case, if I was the coach or GM I’d cut everyone of them if I knew that for sure. We all saw Wallace quit. That said I still don’t see how they can move him without taking a big hit. I can’t see a team trading for him either as they know what his issues are as well.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yeah, he seems to be our re headed step child for now.
I bet Philbin tells Aponte & Hickey don’t let that kinda contract happen again.

    Brian,
You are absolutely correct- winning, or at least success, does contribute to the continuing interest one has. I know this because of my interest in the Miami heat, and that I know much more about what’s going on because of their recent success. I suppose I need to give that more weight in my considerations. But absent of that, it does not answer the overall waning of my interest in consuming the product.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I hear you. Addiitonally,it drains on you over the years if your team is not successful for an extended period of time. I’m currently living in Dolphins, Mets, Knicks and Islanders hell, although the Islanders have given me reason for hope this season. I haven’t seen a championship out of any of those teams in 29 years.

  70. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Ken, a certain DGB would make us forget about Wallace pretty quickly 🙂

  71. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Tim:
If a guy quit on the team you take the cap hit. To do so otherwise sends the wrong message to the players. That your contract is more important than your performance and effort on the field.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Reason would say then, if they keep him, they do not think he quit on the team, no?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

yes or they feel he is truly repentant and won’t do it again. One or the other. We also don’t know all the facts behind what happen so it is hard to figure what is going to happen.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

        Only Gibson knows for sure…lol

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Or the team just makes the wrong decision. That remains a possibility as well.

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Sure, and I agree- we DON’T know the true/whole story. We can only speculate on what we have gleaned from various sources, and the reliability we ascribe to them.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Ultimately, I agree with your point, that being the message sent to the team if they keep him when it is believed/proven he quit on the team. Production/performance> contract.

Ken — in NFLeeze my guess is that means the Phins started contract negotiations and the first thing Clay’s agent did after he hung up the phone was call the Herald…….off record of course.

  73. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t think Wallace quit on the team, I think they shut him down, so he wouldn’t get hurt in a meaningless game they wanted to lose.

  75. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I really did like Wallace and thought he was playing hard almost all season. In partcular the New England game and the Vikings game I thought Wallace showed a lot of toughness. But I am very bothered by the possibility that he may have quit on the team. That is hard to justify to keeping someone like that on the roster if true.

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, we clearly saw Wallace quit and walk away from the play.

GDP, Wallace’s contract was an Ireland signing. I don’t think Philbin thinks too much about contracts, just player performance. Coaches need to know they can rely on guys. That’s why Matthews is in the dog house, he seems to be late for meetings and loses concentration is games based on some reports. He’s a former 7th rd pick who doesn’t have big status so it comes down to accountability and reliability, nothing more.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yeah I know Wallace was a Jeffro signing, and I mentioned Philbin bringing up the contract as he knows it may saddle him with Wallace another year.
I do agree Wallace walked away, I saw it. If he was just being shut down to prevent injury then they have said so, and they surely wouldn’t have had poor Tanny out there getting mauled every 1.7 sec after the snap.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah the pass pro got really ugly down the stretch of that game. That has to be corrected or it will be more of the same in 2015.

Big difference (To me at least) between quitting when the playoffs are on the line, and when you were eliminated from the playoffs. Also, as I’ve stated before, it seemed like the whole team was just going through the motions in that game.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well quitting with the playoffs on the line never made any sense to me. Also what something seems like as opposed to a clear action of quitting are two different things.

  83. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I really can’t see Hartline staying unless he really takes a big pay cut…keep Wallace 1 more year, draft their replacements, or draft one then a FA WR on a short term earn it deal like Crabtree.

It’s hard to say who’s defensive player of the year the way they finished. Wake is Wake, but I’d give it to Jenkins who got thrust into the lineup after Ellerbe got hurt and led the team in tackles and also had 3.5 sacks from a none sack position.

  86. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

steveccnv — then that shot during the game where Philbin walks up to Wallace where they have a brief exchange and Joe abruptly walks away with a “back to the game” look was all for show. Just not buying it. Good to see you though.

  88. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Damn, I wonder what they paid this 25yo CB, and I wonder if the Phins had any interest. Saves a draft pick.

    Saints signed CB Delvin Breaux.
A shutdown corner in the CFL, Breaux received strong interest from NFL teams this offseason. He lands in a good spot with the Saints, who had some of the worst cornerback play in the league last year. At 6-foot-1, 195, Breaux has prototype size for Rob Ryan’s Press Man concepts. With Keenan Lewis and Terrence Frederick currently atop the Saints’ depth chart, Breaux will have a chance for immediate playing time.

    Tim

Yes, quite true. Can’t argue that.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Unfortunately I feel our team has worn down late in the year and the main culprit has been the LOS on both sides of the ball. We’re undersized on the DL overall and our OL hasn’t been settled since it started to come apart with Jake’s decline.

This Gator can be had late rounds….could be a good add.

Florida senior OL Max Garcia’s “effort and hand placement have stood out on tape when we’ve studied him this week,” observed Scout’s Inc.
“He’s so good at latching on to his man that he can quickly get back into position even when he loses balance. He isn’t the most physically gifted lineman, but he consistently executes his assignment,” wrote Todd McShay, Steve Muench and Kevin Weidl. Garcia, a former Maryland Terrapin, has made starts at center, left tackle and left guard during his career. CBS Sports’ Rob Rang likes his knee bend and flexibility.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have to fortify the middle of the defense – DT, MLB and the other S position. Then do the same on the OL at G with Pouncey back at C and hoping Albert is ready to go at LT with James back at RT. Hopefully some of those positions are already on the roster, they just weren’t ready in 2014.

Jordan and McCain have to help Wake and Vernon by getting more snaps. We’re undersized at DE so we need to split the snaps more to keep the pass rush fresh late in games and in the season.

  95. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This is just me thinking about the defense. It doesn’t mean the team agrees with me. LOL

Sign a stout anchor DT in the mid-range pay scale. A guy who can keep our LBs clean. I would roll with that guy, Mitchell and Starks. Let Odrick walk, he’s the guy who is a UFA and will be looking for his biggest payday whatever that is. I really feel Fede can do what Odrick does at a much cheaper rate, and I like Odrick. He just never reached the level I thought he would.

Hope to get Misi healthy, maybe even Ellerbe and draft an athletic LB to go along with Jenkins. I don’t see any reason to keep Wheeler on board. He doesn’t fit what we’re asking him to do. He’s an attack LB and we have edge guys and other better all around LBs who can do that. He’s a fish out of water.

At Safety it would be great if Aikens could land the other S spot along with Jones. But competition is always good. Need some depth at corner too with Taylor, Davis and Finnegan all struggling with injuries. I don’t think Finnegan will be back. Wilson is also a UFA.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would not count in a healthy Misi
I think the possibility of adding a DT, LB or 2, S and CB seen pretty strong
On offense a WR, RB and 2 OGs seem likely

I’m thinking we have more than 10 new faces in the roster next season
I guess you can add half a dozen in the draft and if 3 can make an impact in year 1 that’s a luxury
A half dozen more in FA – mostly cheap 1 year contracts

My big question mark is whether we chase any high price FAs

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All I’m saying is get Misi healthy and let him compete with possibly even Ellerbe. I’d draft a LB for sure and add another one somehow as well. But we can’t gut every position and expect it all to go hunky-dory. We have to rely on some guys we already have but also have a plan B.
