WEDGE SCOUTING REPORT: KEVIN WHITE

Wedge ID

KWhite1

Kevin White is a gifted big physical receiver from West Virginia.  He is 6-3, 210 lbs.  the first thing most people think about White is that he will be a heck of a redzone threat – which is true as evidenced from the photo above.  But first let’s talk about his background.

Although a talented high school prospect, White did not have the academic credentials to play Division 1 football out of high school.  So he went to Junior College, which probably explains why no one heard about him two years ago.  When he transferred to West Virginia he had a modest junior year catching 35 passes for a little over 500 yards.  But in his senior season he was as powerful Supernova – he exploded on the scene catching 109 passes, for 1447 yards and 10 TDs.  Holy Quasars!!!

That might worry some scouts.  He is a bit of a one year wonder.  In an interview with Dane Brugler, White explained that in 2013 he didn’t know what to expect but with a lot of offseason training and working on his routes he was able to dramatically improve.

NCAA Football: Oklahoma at West Virginia

Whatever the reason for his dramatic improvement was, he became quite a threat when he he had the football in his hands in 2014.  10 TDs!  I would love to see Ryan Tannehill throwing to a big WR like that who can run after the catch.  Considering how many shorter routes the Lazor offense has, this is exactly the kind of receiver the Dolphins can use.

KWhite2

What White does really well is attack the ball at the point of attack.  I expect this guy to jump well over 40″ at the combine.  He can go up there and fight for the ball.  He consistently catches the ball away from his body.  He has hands the size of a Zorracian Moon Octopus and uses them to catch the ball.

But its more than raw physical talent.  Its technique this guy is a craftsman! He has excellent hand technique.  Its going to be really hard for DBs to press White in the NFL.  White is a huge Larry Fitzgerald fan and models his game after Fitzgerald and while he is a possession receiver in the same way Fitzgerald is, some scouts think a better comparison is Ashlon Jeffrey.

   KWhiteCannon

But if I had to compare Kevin White to any weapon I would compare him to a H-Alpha Cannon!  Big Hops, Big Hands, Great Hand Technique – BOOM!!!  Anyone knows that is an H-Alpha Cannon.

    You son of a bitch!

    • Tim Knight says:

      LOL

So are you on board with Kevin White at #14? From what I saw of him on video is he can run routes in our offense – bubble screens, quick slants and outs, go vertical and definitely play the ball on red zone plays.

  2. Mike E. says:

I agree with fortifying the middle of the defense. Just like a beisbol, chu have to be strong up de middle. (DT, MLB, S)

  3. Mike E. says:

So glad I found my phone. For some reason I thought it was a goners this time, but I just left it on my desk at my office. Whew!

    What’s up boulder

  6. The Flying Pig says:

Some one tell boulder how to change his name

  7. Mike E. says:

Hey Boulder! Good to see ya! You can change your name under the comment box, where it says ( Log Out / Change )

  8. Mike E. says:

Anyone here see Boulder’s comments? 😀

  9. BoulderPhinfan says:

I hope we bring in someone with a lot d-line experience to replace rodgers. how about shwartz the bills dc. I don’t think he has a job yet and the bills d-line was awesome last year.

    • Tim Knight says:

Schwartz has coached the two best D-lines in the league in DET and BUF in recent years. I happen to think he’s a jerk so I’d pass.

  10. Tim Knight says:

Hey Boulder, so besides Philbin and his staff sucking, how do the Dolphins get better despite them? 😉

    • BoulderPhinfan says:

I’m not sure they can. But I would start with the o-line and then d-line and the rest of defense. I know everyone thinks we should dump wallace but I would try and keep him. he needs to have heart to heart and i bet he’ll behave a lot better next year because he’ll be playing for a contract.

      • Tim Knight says:

He has a big contract already, $30M guaranteed. 5 years $60M overall. He’s super fast and played more physical this year – no doubt. But I saw him give up on passes that weren’t perfect and also walked away from helping Williams get more yards. Landry a second later showed the difference between the two mentalities. Wallace bummed me out. You won’t win with that attitude. Marshawn Lynch won’t be cordial with the media but he plays 100%.

  11. Mike E. says:

    Boulder
I think Schwartz is a good defensive coach, but the D-line in BUF was awesome because it’s awesome, not because of the coaches. They have a lot of talent on that line.

    • BoulderPhinfan says:

yea. But my point is Coyle is not a good with the defensive line and LBs. He’s more of a secondary guy. We need someone with experience coaching the d-line.

      • Mike E. says:

        I hear that. That’s true

      • Tim Knight says:

Top 5 defense for 10 games. What went wrong? Coaching? If you keep thinking that you’d be wrong. They wore down. It was obvious. You don’t go from #8 against the run through 10 games and finish 24th because of coaching.

We’re an undersized defense that is being built in concert with an offense that controls the ball and the tempo of the game. The objective is to score points and make the opponent one dimensional on offense. Then let the dogs out. Whether we’re there yet doesn’t matter, that’s the philosophy. Lot’s of teams use that model.

  12. BailBondMike says:

That is a very good point Tim

    • Tim Knight says:

Thank you. If the coaching was that apparently bad it would have been that way from the beginning. This team isn’t good enough yet and nobody wants to accept it except for Randy. LOL

How did we get to 7-5 with a chance at 11-5? Poor coaching all along? That boggles my mind.

Fans act like we’ve been 4-12 the last 3 years. 8-8 is the best we’ve been since 2008. Right, horrible coaching with all that great talent the incompetent GM Ireland brought in.

Anyone else see a contradiction here? LOL

  13. stangerx says:

“Are my comments posting?” no they are not Boulder. More like…

That’s a pic of Cavs wife……..good to “see” you bud.

  14. BailBondMike says:

I like how you can point at someone’s avi and then click on “view complete profile” and it shows the avi pic in a much larger photo.

What I’m trying to say is, I can’t wait for Rockphin to start posting….just sayin’

  15. Mike E. says:

BBM – This can hold you over till Rock gets here . . . .

  16. BailBondMike says:

If you look at my avi, when you view it in complete profile, you can see that I taught my dog “Big Mac” how to properly grip a football.

  17. BoulderPhinfan says:

Doesn’t every team have NFL players playing on their teams? how come their players don’t wear down in December but ours do? And some team deal with injuries better than others. Obviously our FO didn’t plan as well as some of the other teams. Because once injuries hit we were done.

    • Tim Knight says:

Many do when they get beat. Go back and look at the playoff performances. Yeah they made the playoffs and then got dominated. That’s not the goal

  18. finfanrob says:

wow, just wow, X gets all pissy with me for making fun of his own typo about his wife and says wife’s should be off limits then he goes and post a naked pictured of kongs wife.

well now we all know why mike was so desperate to find his phone before his wife found it

  20. finfanrob says:

I taught my dog “Big Mac” how to properly grip a football.

so what, that isnt a big deal. you want to have a successful doggie football team, teach your dog how to deflate a football.

  23. Tim Knight says:

    We better re-sign Clay.
    161-1,809 11.7, 14-TD, 87-1st downs, 29-20+ yard catches. He’s a playmaker. Simple as that.

  24. Tim Knight says:

I think Rock said he’s done blogging.

    • stangerx says:

He did. And I said I would never do shots again. Don’t anymore, but I lied about twenty times before the time I finally told the truth.

  25. Mike E. says:

LMAO @ FFR! That was funny

  26. Mike E. says:

I hope Rock gets back into the swing of things. I feel for him man. Tough time right now. Hopefully, he’ll be able to rebound and find some happiness.

  27. finfanrob says:

LOl @ X and me the proof reader. pretty witty

  28. finfanrob says:

i dont know much about football. hell the first incompletion and i am sure the fins will lose. but i dont get all the questioning of clay. when he is healthy and on the field he seems like a pretty good player. i dont doubt he has been misused but who with this team hasnt been. and i include us as fans too, we have so been misused and abused with this team.

  29. Tim Knight says:

To me Tannehill, Miller, Wallace, Landry and Clay are the core of the offense. Add to it.

    • CavalierKong says:

I agree. I don’t like how Wallace ended the year like a jerk and it sucked that Clay had a down year due to injuries (although maybe it gives us a better price) but I’d like to keep this group and add a piece or two along with continuing to build the line. On this side of the ball let’s add, not subtract.

      • Mike E. says:

That’s what I’m all about. I don’t want to lose Wallace, and I think they should do everything they can to fix things.

  30. Mike E. says:

    Lou

How did Walford do in the SB?

  31. BoulderPhinfan says:

I don’t want to lose wallace either. Philbin needs to learn to live with diva and some trouble but talented players.

  36. BailBondMike says:

That Tyler Varga does not run like a FB. Dude has some moves, burst and like the way he loves to punish DB’s. He finishes his runs like Walter Peyton did, punish someone before you go down or out of bounds.

  37. BailBondMike says:

I wish it would snow here

  38. Mike E. says:

I’m expecting to get a fair amount of snow here in NJ tomorrow, but Tim will likely get more than I will. North Jersey usually gets hit harder, although there were a few storms in the last couple of years that pounded Central Jersey worse than the north.

    • stangerx says:

It’s a nor’easterner and looks like ground zero is somewhere btwn where Ken lives and Rhode Island (that’s about a half hour drive).

      • Mike E. says:

I guess my sonny is going to get hit pretty good tomorrow too then.

      • stangerx says:

Yep — but he’s inland a bit, which might mean more snow, but he won’t get kicked by the storm surge. Lived in a house on the water in Milford, Ct once. When one of these came, me and my roommates learned why is was on stilts.

i mean you guys make up crazy ass fantasy trades so why the hell not.

oh yeah and speaking of fantasy before the SB the league suspends belicheat and tommy flatballs and suspends them both for life voiding all their wins and names from the nfl archives.

  43. Tim Knight says:

The storm is just a way for the liberal media to force you to buy shovels – help the working man.

  44. professor lou says:

    Mike,
Walford’s one catch doesn’t say anything about the way he performed. It’s true, he had a GREAT week of practice and will no doubt be the first TE taken. I’m loving the kid because he can break down a defender like a wr. Walford was nursing and injury and decided to try and play in the game and made one catch and was nailed by Jordan Hicks but hung on to the ball. I know everyone seems to be high on Clay right now but Walford would give us a Graham or Gronk-like weapon at the TE position.

    • Tim Knight says:

      Maybe.

      • Tim Knight says:

        I know Clay can play.

      • professor lou says:

Clay can play, there’s no doubt but he had a drop in production last year missing two games. The big thing wasn’t so much the yards as much as it was the td’s. He dropped from 6 to 3 td’s on the year. Plus, he didn’t seem to be the threat last year he was the year before. I like Clay but I’m not married to the guy either if we can upgrade the position.

  45. wyoming85 says:

    FFR
    Nice !!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m guessing we won’t need to do any mocks for 8 years or so?

  46. professor lou says:

Trade down into the mid 20’s and take:
    Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma
With 15th pick in 2nd take:
    Justin Hardy, WR, E Carolina
With 25th pick in 2nd take:
    Clive Walford, TE, Miami
With 14th pick in 3rd take:
    Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke
That’s all I got for right now but I would love a draft like that.

  47. professor lou says:

I wouldn’t mind seeing Kevin White from TCU wearing a Fins uni this season.

  48. professor lou says:

I like Qunadre Diggs to take over the nickel for Jimmy Wilson. He’s a true nickel who can cover and can tackle much better than Wilson. He’s currently a fifth rd projection.

  49. professor lou says:

Problem I see with almost everyone who is on this team is that there’s just about nobody that’s not replaceable and that includes Tanny. When we have conversations about current players on the roster and prospects in the draft or FA the only thing I can say is that I didn’t see anyone play all that outstanding that we can’t afford to lose him.
If Odrick goes we can either pick up someone in FA or the draft and are most likely going to upgrade the position. If we lose Clay you can say the same thing. Clay can play and has been an important part of the offense but 6 td’s in 2013 and 3 in 2014 are hardly numbers that can’t be had by someone else. If we draft a guy like Strong or Hardy at wr we will probably more than replace those numbers.
So, I’m not going to lament the loss of most of these guys when I look at the talent that’s out there. Martrell Spaight from Arkansas is an OLB that would replace Trusnik day one. Granted Trusnik is a sub but Spaight’s an upgrade. Jordan Hicks is another guy who’d put Trusnik on another team. Again, things wouldn’t be as dire as anyone may think if we lose some of these guys:
    Odrick
    Hartline
    Clay
    Thomas
    Wilson
    Trusnik
    Garner
    Brenner
    Satele

David Johnson from Northern Iowa makes Thomas replaceable day one. So would Cameron Stingily of Northern Illinois.

  50. professor lou says:

    Tim,
Clay is going to be looking for the big pay day and we probably aren’t going to give him what another team may throw out there at him. So, I don’t see him back.

  51. Mike E. says:

    Gotta bring Diggs here. lol

  52. Mike E. says:

    Lou
Hard to judge Clay this year because I’m not sure if he was ever really healthy at all. He played through it, so I give him props for that. Not sure if he’s going to really get a big payday anywhere, but I don’t think we’ll go overboard for him.

    • twicethethe says:

I think one of the concerns for Clay coming out of college was his size/durability for the NFL. He seems to have held up pretty well for the most part, but for how long?

  53. Ken says:

What’s up FUers? I just love saying that.

  54. Ken says:

I am happy Tyler Varga had a great Senior Bowl. I have been watching him for 4 years here in Connecticut and he can play. He actually would be a good fit for us as Yale plays the spread option. Get rid of DT3 and get Varga in round 5.

    • Mike E. says:

      Powerback?

    • professor lou says:

I’d rather David Johnson or Cameron Stingily to replace DT3. Johnson can more than replace DT3 as a pass catching back and definitely runs with more power than he ever did but even at his size he can still make a move to make people miss. Stingily will just run right over you like Larry Csonka but he’s a one cut guy who can make the first guy miss. Either way, it’s a bug upgrade to the DT3 experiment.

      • Ken says:

It’s not hard to be a big upgrade over DT3. I know of Johnson and like him. Not familiar with Stingily. I do like Varga but that comes from watching the kid here for the past 4 years. I do think he is a good fit as Yale plays that spread option and Varga was very effective in that set.

  65. Mike E. says:

Watched some of the Senior Bowl practices earlier. Walford and Dorsett really did well for themselves. I could be wrong, but Walford just doesn’t look fast or explosive to me.

    • professor lou says:

From what I saw of him in the one on one’s they had to tape some defenders ankles when he was finished.

      • Mike E. says:

Ah, so more shifty than fast? I saw him catching almost everything, and he uses his size well, but he just didn’t look like he was moving quickly.

  66. Mike E. says:

I think Hulk becomes Ken in his peaceful, sleepy state. If, however, he dreams (or has a nightmare) about the end of either of the last 2 seasons, he most likely wakes up as the Hulk, and tears shit up!

  67. getterdone says:

Sitting here thinking what a tough quandary that Hickey & Aponte have, besides all the team FA talk here, not much is being mentioned of offering Tanny a good contract that will tie him up for the next 5-6yrs. When they do that, then what do they do with FA Matt Moore? He either takes a huge cut, or looks elsewhere.
I’d say he looks elsewhere. The Browns may be interested in Moore instead of resigning Hoyer, then you have teams like the Texans he could compete for a starting role as well.

Folks, we are likely to see a lot of movement on this team after March till June 1.

  68. Mike E. says:

I think Moore is likely gone. Once we give the big bucks to Tanny, Moore will look elsewhere

  69. Mike E. says:

GDP – The good thing is, when you’re 7-9, 8-8, and 8-8, you don’t feel so bad losing players, because some of these guys are the reason why we’ve been just average. Matt Moore doesn’t really figure into that equation, but a lot of the other guys do.

    • getterdone says:

Ok Tim, I thought it was coaching 😉
Yeah I agree, we need talent upgrades in key areas, but you also have to try and hold onto drafted players and let them develop. Cause as we’ve seen over and over…pricey FA’s from other teams don’t workout more often than they do.
Fortunately we have several 2nd-4th year guys that were drafted by us that can start to peak some.

  70. getterdone says:

Mike, it’s too bad we couldn’t have traded the $4M Moore in 2013 while we could have gotten something for him….but who knew Tanny could stand up under that beating and not miss a game…lol

    • Mike E. says:

Can’t think like that. Every team has to have a backup. I’m not sure if we could have gotten significant compensation for Moore anyway.

      • getterdone says:

It was a pickle we were in with Moore, I’ve mentioned it before. Everything is about timing usually in this league.

  73. Mike E. says:

GDP – You KNOW I think a lot of it is coaching, but some guys haven’t panned out here, and it’s time for them to take a hike! Philip Wheeler, Dannell Ellerbe, maybe Hartline, Starks, Odrick

  74. getterdone says:

Mike E – All were other team FA’s sans Hartline & Odrick.
Starks gave us good service (he may be getting too long in the tooth now)
Hartline gave us good service (but his contract is hurting us & we’re upgrading our WR corp with more draft picks likely, it started with Landry)
Odrick has been solid, stayed pretty healthy. He played the most snaps by far on the DL this past season. I’d resign him…you need a work horse like that.
