The Origins of Hulk

 orgins of hulk pic

By Dr. Bruce Banner

We here at Finsmob Unleashed have been wondering how many of you from all over including Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, California, Iowa, Wisconsin, Canada and other parts known and unknown have become Miami Dolphin fans. So we are encouraging all of you to write us your story on how you became a phins fan. Here is Hulk’s.

Every great Superhero have origins story. This is mine. Hulk was first exposed to gamma radiation on January 2, 1972 when 3 bombs went off in the Orange Bowl in Miami. Hulk was not quite 8 years old and the Miami Dolphins were playing in the AFC Championship game against a group of horsemen from the City of Baltimore. Miami just come off thrilling overtime victory versus Kansas City Chiefs in then longest game in league history. Young Hulk think it would be fun to see this team win. However, everyone tell young Hulk that no way could Miami win. The horsemen were defending Super Bowl Champions. They were led by great field general known as Johnny U – please do not confuse with Johnny Football. That would make Hulk angry. So Hulk thought there was no way that Miami could win.

Then early in 1st quarter the first bomb goes off. Bob Griese finds greatest wide receiver in Dolphins’ history, otherwise known as Paul Warfield, for 75 yard touchdown pass and Miami has early lead.

paul warfield

Greatest wide receiver in Dolphins’ history score touchdown vs Colts on January 2, 1972.

Score remain 7-0 in favor of Miami at half. Then in early in 3rd quarter 2nd bomb go off. This time it was Johnny U who threw deep ball in direction of Eddie Hinton but ball get tipped and some guy name Dick do impersonation of heat seeking missile and intercept ball. Then some guy named Dick not just go down but he turn and run with ball and his defensive team mates threw blocks like experienced offensive linemen and some guy named Dick returns interception for 62 yards and touchdown. Miami now have 14-0 lead and young Hulk getting excited that Dolphins will prove everyone wrong.

Dick Anderson

Some guy named Dick returning interception of Johnny U on January 2, 1972.

But Dolphins no done yet. The 3rd bomb goes off in the 4th quarter. Bob Griese once again finds greatest receiver in Dolphins’ history for 50 yard bomb. This put Miami deep in horsemen territory. Then Miami know what to do. They give ball to Zonk. Hulk like Zonk. Zonk do Hulk impersonation and smash his way 5 yards for game clinching touchdown. After Zonk scores Dick’s defense holds up for rest of game. (Hulk think Dick’s team mates changed name of defense the next season to No Name Defense so Dick no feel bad). Miami beats horsemen 21-0 in upset victory and go to Super Bowl. Young Hulk hooked on this improbable win and starts to feel the power of the gamma radiation.

Larry Csonka

Larry Csonka running football vs. Colts January 2, 1972

But Hulk’s origins story not done. It was 2 weeks later in Super Bowl VI that Hulk first experience the anger and rage that caused by the gamma radiation. Miami go to play some Cowboys from Dallas and the Cowboys beat Dolphins bad by score of 24-3. With each score by Cowboys and missed scoring opportunity by Dolphins make Hulk get madder and madder. Hulk get angry, Hulk yell, Hulk scream, Hulk stomp, Hulk cry and Hulk smash. Hulk go into state of suspended emotional development because that is how Hulk react to every Dolphin loss ever since to this very day. But the next season the Hulk see the true power of the gamma radiation. Hulk see Miami Dolphins go 17-0 and crush all opponents on way to perfect season and Super Bowl win. Then Hulk see Miami Dolphins win the following Super Bowl and Hulk now knows the gamma radiation of those three bombs is what powered team to win and what make Hulk the Hulk. That is Hulk’s origins story, so what is yours?

i remember the warfield pass in the 4th quarter like it was yesterday. We were sitting on sw corner of ob. Griese passed the ball before warfield made his second cut on his route of down out and long. It was right into our area about the 10 yard line. Talk about timing between qb and receiver it was the most beautiful perfectly timed pass.

I like the idea of everyone sharing their stories. Do you want them emailed in to somewhere for future posting? If everyone just starts posting their stories here it could become cumbersome.

Well, now we enter the DEAD ZONE of Feb, where absolutely nothing really happens in the NFL.
Hulk sad at this time and curl up into ball to sleep.

JUST OUTSTANDING, KEN!!! – – A GREAT NARRATIVE!! – – Your’s truly is working on an article entitled “Who’s Better, the ’72 Dolphins or the ’73 Dolphins?” –Your contribution will serve as a great table-setter for that discussion.

MY OWN explanation of WHY I became a Fins fan is very easy and simple. I LOVE BIG TIME SPORTS, especially football!!!! – – When the Dolphins came to south Florida, they were the FIRST PRO TEAM in any major sport to call Florida their home state (I don’t call the AAFC’s Miami Seahawks a true big-time team; they lasted only 1 year before moving to Baltimore). SO-O-O, all fans of major league sports in Florida gravitated to the Dolphins!

When Joe Auer returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown in Miami’s first regular season game I knew this franchise would be something special!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

KEN: –LESS well known is the fact that just three weeks earlier than the Colts-Dolphins game you referenced, the Dolphins LOST to these same Colts by a score of 14-3 in a game played Dec. 11 at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.

  6. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

OD, really? Who’s better the 72 or 73 Dolphins? Not a lot since most of the same stars, HC, etc.? 😉
How bout comparing the 72 or 73 Phins to the 84 Phins, or maybe the best Phins teams vs the best Pats, Steelers, or Seahawks teams….actually the Seahawks of 2013-14 remind of the early Phins somewhat with a huge ground n pound game, an efficient Qb that scrambles, and a stingy Defense.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Mike, of course….and everyone and their brother knew you give the ball to Lynch, still with a TO, and he nearly got in the play before. Plus they just gave Lynch a big contract extension. Why do that if you don’t have faith in him getting a half yard on 2nd or 3rd down? SMH

“Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel said the club conducted noise studies on potential materials for the canopy on the stadium that will be in place for the 2016 season, with the expectation being noise will bounce off the roof and back onto the field rather than be absorbed.”

We’ll never be the SeaHawks but that combined with getting seats closer to the field can’t hurt.

Team president Tom Lewand thinks there’s a “very, very good chance” will get a long-term deal done with free agent DT Ndamukong Suh in the next few weeks.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m really starting to think I want Gerod Holliman in a Dolphins uniform. I know he’s not a great tackler, but he’s a playmaker, and we need those. I’m guessing he’s going to go between the 2nd and 3rd, I would try to make that happen.

  15. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Brady wants to give the vehicle he won for being Bowl MVP to Malcolm Butler. Hey — I would too. Plus guessing that, even if Tom kept it, you would see him sporting Gisele around town in a Chevy truck anyhow.

  16. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Our old buddy Troy Vincent seems to have confirmed exactly how it went down as far as deflategate and since he works for the NFL will assume this part is true.

The Colts “realized there was a problem with the footballs when D’Qwell Jackson intercepted Tom Brady in the second quarter and brought the ball over to the sideline” and reported to the league.

“During halftime, the 12 Patriots footballs were checked for the correct air pressure, and it was determined that 11 of them were underinflated, according to a report. The balls were replaced before the first offensive series of the second half.”

  17. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Stanger,
    More to it….

    There’s more to it….

“To further cloud the issue, Indianapolis Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson, who says he didn’t snitch on the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, told NFL Media’s Jeff Darlington on Thursday that Brady was using a Colts football at the end of the first half Sunday night. Jackson spoke to an official, who said they couldn’t locate a usable football during a TV timeout when the Patriots had the ball. Later in the first half, Jackson noticed that the Patriots were using Colts footballs. Jackson told Darlington that he thought it was odd that the Patriots couldn’t find a football to use during the AFC Championship Game.”

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Al — I have no doubt there is a whole lot more, but with all the reports around as usghe figured what Vincent said is a starting point. The NFL might two-step, spin and hide info……but it will not make a public statement that is factually wrong. They’re too smart for that.

When it’s time to reduce Atlanta’s roster to 53 players in late summer, head coach Dan Quinn will have the final call if it comes to that.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank indicated Tuesday that Quinn would have the final decision-making power on the roster, the club said on its official Twitter feed.

The Falcons offically hired the 44-year-old Quinn on Monday. He had been the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator the last two seasons. Quinn has never been a head coach on the collegiate or professional level.

Too many possessions where the team shot itself in the foot. Get a completion for a first down only to have it called back for holding followed by another holding penalty. Ranfom illegal man downfield calls and shit like that add up. It also seemed like it would be in clusters. Like 3 out 4 drives would be 3 and out and then the offense would be insync the rest of the way.

About that SS article discussing the defensive players complaining of being worn down (by practice schedule) well the truth is, that comes down to depth and how coaches manage it. I think some of the younger guys who were nicked up earlier in the year should have just been pushed into the fire but that’s just me. This is why depth is important.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Depth and knowing when to cut the cord with certain player (Starks). Also not relying on injury prone players.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Still a lot unclear about the practice schedule.
The D-line was deep and pretty healthy.
The DBs had some problems, but they are expected to play all downs.
Injuries on the LBs, but those are injuries.

Fact is the D crumbled at the end, even as the O stepped up.
Plus just human nature to come up with an excuse that is not your fault.

Lou — assuming you were talking about wsa on the D rather than the ffr and David love fest. 🙂

Whatever happened is the big Q. Particularly on the rushing defense. Did D coordinators after nine games all of a sudden realize Soliai was on another team?

  71. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

Tax season just started and I’m getting tired already. I hope I don’t flame out at the end of the season.

  72. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I will say it again, I like Lynch in the passing game as long as he’s healthy.

  73. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

and despite the injuries to the secondary the 2014 Miami Dolphins had the 6th best passing defense giving up 222 yds per game. It was the run defense that was 24th overall that fell apart and that’s on a d-line that was intact all season. The run defense was one of the best early on until teams started to figure out how to gash us and they did that well.

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

14 int’s and 89 passer rating puts the Fins pass defense in the middle of the pack. 27 td’s given up puts them at 20th.

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

39 sacks puts them at 16; middle of pack. Lack of pressure on passing downs contributed as well.

  74. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I can say this, and no ones going to like it, but . . . .

We complained when we had Soliai here, and we thought we were set with Earl Mitchell and Starks, 2 penetrating DT’s. So, now we’re looking for another big bodied NT? Seems like we’re going in circles. Then we’ll be complaining he doesn’t really occupy 2 blockers, and we need a more athletic DT. Round and round she goes . . . .

    • professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

      LOL

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

At least think that if you are going to go fleet edge rushers on the outside who can’t do the run as well you need something set up inside……even if that is a stud MLB.

And think there is a reason Soliai got the contract he did and Starks got the one-year. Yeah it is two on paper, but he’s cuttable now.

  75. professor lou's avatar professor lou says:

Couldn’t stop the run and couldn’t get pressure on opposing qb’s. You stop the run and put them in 3rd and long’s, put pressure on the qb and you force them into making bad plays and create more turnovers.

I became a fan in ’72, but I’d say I became a real fan in ’77, because that’s when I really started watching football, and kept track of the standings and stuff like that.

To Belichick’s defense, I have seen a few people do this in NJ (family members kiss in the mouth). Depends on family background…I saw this more with Eastern Euros for whatever that means.

    Pro Lou,
LOL @ your pics…however, proving certain income (if audited) might be a pain in the first set of clients you posted.

    FFR,
Well, Belicheck was born in Nashville, Tennessee :/. But raised in Annapolis, MD

    Mike E,
The funny thing is that Mitchell had success as an NT in Houston’s 3-4.
He led all NT’s last year in both assisted and unassisted tackles (thus lead all in total tackles as well). Hickey was right to see his natural skills play out quite nicely in a 4-3 DT position BUT Starks failed to hold his end of the bargain. Anthony Johnson looked good in limited pairings with Mitchell but eventually he was hurt and out of the picture.

By the way, I HOPE the Fins get NE in the opening week @ NE. When the Fins beat their asses, those fans who will be all cheery will be slapped down to reality that Miami is coming to take their lunch money.

Then by all means we should let Odrick walk. His 1 sack doesn’t exactly show hios pass rushing prowess. We can do better. Even if we can’t, he’s going to be asking for a lot more than he’s worth.

    Mike E,
For the price in a 3-4 arrangement, don’t like Odrick. He does have value but to me he’s best fit in a 3-4 as a DE. and maybe 3rd down DT in a 4-3 scheme.
