We’ve already focused on the linebackers, and safeties, but today we go to the trenches, where the 300 pound behemoths lurk, the ones in the line of fire, whose sworn duty is to protect #17, the QB, Ryan Tannehill.
A lot of people point to the Dallas Cowboys as the blueprint for success for Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin. They point to what Jason Garrett did in his first full 3 years (8-8), and then to his breakout year last year with the Cowboys (12-4). Not that the Dolphins roster is structured exactly the same as the Dallas Cowboys at this juncture, but one could easily point to their 1st RD draft choice, OG Zack Martin as the move that enabled the Cowboys to be what they were last year. Martin solidified the O-line, and this allowed the Cowboys offense to perform on an entirely new level. LT Tyron Smith (1st RD ’11)) – LG Ronald Leary (UDFA ’12) – C Travis Frederick (1st RD ’13) – RG Zack Martin (1st RD ’14) – RT Doug Free (4th RD 2007) So you see, the Cowboys have used THREE 1st RD picks to out this excellent line together, along with a 4th RD pick, and UDFA.
The Dolphins line, if projected right now, with what we currently have on the roster, and assuming Brandon Albert is ready to start the season healthy is this . . . LT Branden Albert (1st RD ’08) – LG Billy Turner (3rd RD ’14) – Mike Pouncey (1st RD ’11) – RG Shelley Smith (6th RD ’10) – RT Ja’Wuan James (1st RD ’14). Billy Turner played in 2 games, and did not start either game. Shelley Smith played in 11 games, started 3. Both OG spots, at least as far as I’m concerned are question marks. If Albert is healthy, he’s our LT, Pouncey goes back to C, and Rookie standout Ja’Wuan James goes back to his natural RT spot. The question is, do we need to draft a G in the first RD? Not necessarily, but . . . . If La’el Collins is there at #14, and he likely will be, do you take him?
My reasoning behind why I might do it, is this. We all say we need the O-line fixed, because we were lousy at pass protection, and we couldn’t convert on short yardage plays. We also, unfortunately, don’t know if Branden Albert will actually be healthy enough to start game 1 of the ’15 season, so then not only do we have 2 holes to fill at both OG spots, but now we don’t have a LT either. My thought is that if Albert can’t go early, Ja’Wuan James once again mans the LT spot as he did after Albert went down, and La’el Collins plays the RT spot until Albert comes back. Once Albert is healthy, James goes to RT, and Collins plays RG. Collins is a fierce run blocker, and I think he would help immeasurably on all those short yardage conversions we’ve failed on the last couple of years, as well solidify the line as a pass blocker.
Let’s look at the options available in this years draft . . .
Brandon Scherff – OT Iowa 6’5” 320
The best OL prospect in the ’15 draft, Scherff will almost certainly be off the board before the Dolphins pick at #14, and most likely, in the top 5 picks. Scherff is real road grader, easily the best run blocker in this draft. He isn’t, however a great pass protector. He’s as powerful as they come, but he doesn’t always get his hands out on defenders, and doesn’t move laterally well, and may be forced to play either RT or even move inside to OG in the NFL.
NFL.com’s Lance Zeirlein rates him tops at 6.45, and clearly, his pass blocking is what keeps that grade down. He will likely be impressive at the combine, as he is a real gym rat and is a very impressive weight lifter, and his leg strength is tremenedous.

Andrus Peat – OT Stanford 6’7” 316
I know, I know, never again should we take an OT from Stanford! Peat is not Jonathan Martin, so therefore, you have to look at him as an individual, and not from the school he comes from. Peat is most likely the 2nd highest rated OL on most boards, and NFL.com has him as #2.
As opposed to Jon Martin, Peat is a powerful run blocker, and a pretty good pass blocker as well. At LT, Peat struggles with speed rushers. He may, like Scherff, need to move to the right side as a RT in the NFL. NFL.com has him rated at 6.2

La’el Collins – OT LSU 6’5” 321
Collins is a brawler, a mean run blocking machine. He loves to intimidate opponents, and is a real finisher who plays to the whistle. Like all prospects, he has his struggles, and even though he played LT at LSU, he too will most likely have to play RT, or even move inside to OG in the NFL. I look at Collins, and think of all those short yardage plays we were pushed back. I also like that he’s a big insurance policy for us if Branden Albert isn’t ready, or even worse, if he has a setback. I know some guys say Jason Fox, or this guy, or that guy, but all of those guys didn’t help us last year, and we saw what Ja’Wuan James did last year, and look over to Dallas, and see what Zack Martin did. Sometimes, you get what you pay for. I’m not saying if we draft Collins we’re set for the next 10 years, but we might be. The main reason why I wont be opposed to another 1st RD OL, is because it’s a legitimate need. Yes, there are other OG’s in this draft who may suffice, or maybe even other OT’s, but I love the versatility and meanness that Collins brings.
NFL.com has Collins graded at at 6.16,the 3rd best OL, and most teams boards probably do as well.

TJ Clemmings – OT Pitt 6’5” 309
Clemmings was possibly a top 20 lock before the Senior Bowl, but his stock may have dropped a bit, after struggling in some individual drills in practice. Regardless, he’s till probably top 5 on most boards.
Clemmings is a very athletic OL who really moves well. What may elevate him still is the fact that he may be the best true LT prospect in this draft. He has the speed, and athleticism to handle the speed rushers, and although he’s not overpowering, he delivers a jolting hand punch, and he plays with a mean streak, so he has potential. Like most prospects, he’s a work in progress.
NFL.com has him rated at 6.14
NFL comparison – Duane Brown

AJ Cann – OG South Carolina 6’4” 311
Cann is the first true guard prospect we’re looking at. Although some are projected to play G, Cann is a 4YR starter at G. Had the agility to be a LG prospect. He is a good drive blocker, but also is excellent at neutralizing the defender, and staying with blocks. One of his weaknesses is once he gets to the second level, he doesn’t always maintain control, and sometimes gets his weight too far forward in pass protection, which many prospects do.
He’s the highest rated OG on NFL.com at 6.0. Most likely to be a starter from day one.

Ereck Flowers – OT “The U” 6’6” 324
Flowers is a big boy, and plays with a nasty demeanor. L
ike some of the other prospects I’ve discussed, he’s a great run blocker, but his pass blocking is what most likely insures he’s only a RT, and not LT prospect. Keep in mind though, he did play LT at Miami. He could probably start at RT, but would need work to be an NFL LT. He’s another OL that finishes his blocks in the run game. For those of you who want to improve Tannehill’s protection, not sure Flowers is the man. I await flak from D-Bolt about that!

Laken Tomlinson – OG Duke 6’3” 330
4 year starter, and an intelligent player. Not a very athletic guard, but excellent in his pass blocking technique. Get this, he did not allow a sack in the last 2 years! Projecting to the NFL is the big issue, because although Tomlinson did very well on the college level, scouts think he might struggle with the speed in the NFL.
He’s rated at 5.6 on NFL.com

Ali Marpet – OG Hobart 6’4” 310
The real knock on Marpet is the level of competition he played against at Hobart (Div. III). He is, however, a very good OL. He was a 4YR starter at LT. Has good foot quickness and a strong leg drive. Technically sound blocker who can get lower than his opponent giving him better leverage. Looked great at the Senior Bowl, played with a chip to prove he belongs with the better competition. Most likely too short, both in height and arm length and will project better to OG.

Cedric Ogbuehi – OT Texas A&M 6’5” 305
Very smooth athlete who moves well, good foot quickness. Is able to slide step well to meet opponent and maintains good balance. Ogbuehi’s achilles is his playing strength. While he moves well, he doesn’t have the power to beat more powerful opponents, he works hard to sustain blocks and uses his hands well. He played both OT and OG at A&M, and played both well, against stout competition.
He’s the 2nd highest rated OG on NFL.com at 5.9
NFL comparison – Eugene Monroe
If Ogbuehi hits the weight room for a year, he could turn out to be a great NFL player.

Rob Havenstein – OT Wisconsin 6’8” 333
Havenstein is a big, big dude. He’s probably going to have the longest arms at the combine, and at OT, that’s a real advantage. Moves better than expected for a guy his size. Excellent drive blocker who has good control at the second level, maintaining his balance and hitting targets. Obvious difficulties are he rarely gets lower than his opponent, and he has stiffness in his knees, which Doctors will undoubtedly look into thoroughly. He’s a 3 year starter, who most likely will have to play RT in the pros.
NFL.com rates him at 5.77

I’m not tied to any player over another. I just want to start winning, and I don’t care who they have to play to do that. Coaches typically start guys who earn it in practice. I just think we need to continue bringing in better talent. We need to continue to upgrade the talent level on the team….in many areas…so just get it done.
Hey Boulder – Thomas might improve, and it’s likely Garner is gone (Cap cut), so we need a swing player on the line, and THomas can play both inside or out, even if he’s not great, he may be better with more experience and a little more strength.
Dbolt, Turner is likely to be given every opportunity to start in camp and the PS so I would consider him penciled in as a potential starter but nothing more.
Oh, not saying if he plays poorly he won’t lose the spot, but he’s being called a starter as of now.
I think he was drafted with the projection to be just that.

Not sure the coaches are going around telling reporters who the starters are for next season. Philbin is usually pretty ambiguous on that sorta stuff. Not sure why they’d even make those decisions before the draft, FA and the PS/practices start. With albert’s status in question, this whole OL is up for debate. James might start at LT, an FA might. If james does, who plays RT? Thomas, Turner, an FA or draftee? what’s Colledge’s status? Can they afford to move Pouncey back to center, or do they believe they have to play him at guard because Satele is one of the 5 best and can only play center? Lots and lots of questions.
They will have to re-sign Satele first.

Coach Pete Carroll said Friday that Seahawks are negotiating “in earnest” to keep Marshawn Lynch out of retirement.
The Seahawks want to keep Lynch and give him a raise. “We’ve had big offers out there,” Carroll said. It’s believed the Seahawks have offered as much as $10 million for Lynch to play in 2015. He’s currently owed $7 million.

Georgia Tech WR Darren Waller is amenable to working out as either a WR or a TE.
TFY Draft Insider’s Tony Pauline passes along the report, mentioning that Waller is prepared to work out at either spot at both the combine and Georgia Tech’s pro day. It’s smart for Waller to take this stance. He was a jumbo receiver in the Yellow Jackets’ triple-option offense, but Waller is an extremely raw pure pass catcher. The tools, though, are ridiculous. Measured 6-foot-6 5/8 and 242 pounds at the East-West Shrine game, Waller runs a 4.54 forty.
He woulda beenbetter than all the other TE in this class then with those numbers.
Saxton ran a 4.65, TE from South Alabama. Walford 4.79…ouch i think thats a lot higher than expected, same for Maxx Williams 4.78. Marpet was only OL to get under 5.
Marpet so far has some of the best numbers in every event he has been in.

It wasn’t just a high ankle sprain that cost Thomas time and robbed him of his late-season explosion. When Julius’ father felt his son’s toughness was being questioned, Greg Thomas allegedly used Twitter to lash out at the Broncos, Peyton Manning, GM John Elway, and the team’s contract proposals. Per the Denver Post, the sides “seem to be headed their separate ways.”

They really are two different types of players, having both types would really complement our offense and also give us the RZ guy we need. I dont think, however that would could afford both, and i think Clay would be harder to replace. We could get a guy like Thomas in a draftee, someone like Funchess, or Waller, etc and get that complement guy at a rookie cost, and be able to use them in the WR spots as well. The Clay replacement guy was in last years draft, i mentioned him about 100 times, but eagles were smarter than us and brought him in (Trey Burton).

Packers released ILB Brad Jones.
Drafted as a pass rusher out of Colorado, Jones appeared to be an ascending player in 2012 after seizing a starting inside linebacker job. His play tumbled off a cliff immediately after GM Ted Thompson signed Jones to a $12 million extension in March of 2013. Although he is still only 28, Jones has such bad tape that he may struggle to generate much free agent interest.

D, that’s my thoughts on Waller, get him later if we don’t go Big WR in the 1st or 2nd, but definitely keep Clay, he’s young and worth keeping here since we’ve developed him.

I still don’t blame Ireland for trading up for Jordan as a future ‘pass rusher’. Everyone knew he was coming off of shoulder surgery. But year two nobody projected a 6 game suspension. There aren’t too many 6-6 250+ guys who run 4.5 and are athletic on the planet.
It’s time for Jordan to step up as a player, not on the coaches not knowing how yo use him. Good players make plays when they’re on the field. The ball is in Jordan’s court now.

So I’m at dinner, and my neighbor calls to tell me I have water gushing over the front front entryway. I get home, he’s been able to turn the water of at the main, in expecting flooding all throughout the house. Nope- a pipe busted somewhere between the siding and insulation board, nothing appears to have happened inside the house. Of course, it’s been so cold were are several deep on the waiting list to get repairs, and usaa is not sure they cover this, but still, we were spared a major disaster. Plumber plans on coming out tomorrow and getting it fixed, my neighbor just told me-he builds for a living and has friends from different industries. He’s actually pulling down my soffeting looking for break.

Jordan was ranked top 5 by everyone for upside. Ireland didn’t do anything weird there. To go from #12 to #3 with one of two 2nd rd picks is a steal if Jordan pans out. It’s not a lost cause yet.

I see a lot of people questioning Miami’s interest with Vic Beasely & how we have enough OLB’s. Well, there’s a good chance if Miami took him that they’d play him at DE. Similar stature to OV & Wake. He has that really explosive low bend around the edge like Wake.
Vic Beasley is a damn good player. …Not sure he’ll be there at #14.
That’s why I pretty much gave up on getting Shelton, knowing he has no way of getting out of the top 10.

I totally understand what you’re saying with Collins. I know he plays hard in games, and like rgs said, he plays nasty, which is good, but I’d trust them to vet him correcty in the interviews.
Just a recent example, but look at Seantrel Henderson, who everyone said was lazy. He started every game for BUF and really showed that wasn’t really accurate.

When asked to name the deepest positions (but I think that is mainly first two-three rounds) he names RB, WR and edge-rushers. Two of three of those are good for us and the third might offer trade possibilities.
He also says he wouldn’t touch CB till the 2nd.
I agree about not touching a cb till the 2nd. My 3 guys at wr right now are 2nd/3rd rounders too. …Agholor, Dorsett, and Hardy.
I would go trenches in the 1st all the way, but that’s just me. 😉
It is starting to look like it will either be one of your trench guys or a wideout unless we trade down (which is really what I’m hoping for).
Danny Shelton and La’el Collins are my 2 favs, but Malcom Brown and Cameron Erving in a trade down would be a very close 2nd option for me.

Thing about strings performance shows his physical explosiveness. With good coaching in his route running he has a chance to be special.

I liked JJ nelson’s hands and speed. He could be a good later round pick up.

What I read was Wallace goofed off in the WR room and did not even know some of the formations because he thinks he’s too good for all that filmroom stuff.

RGS is correct. We have no shot at White. Nor Cooper. I think DeVante Parker would be a good target. He is a big physical guy and he ran a 4.5 today.
Strong would be ideal. More natural explosion than Cooper. Nelson Agohlor in round 2 makes way too much sense. Justin Hardy clocked in at 4.56….identical to Antonio Brown’s combine and looked great in drills. Tre McBride solidified himself a spot in the 2nd round.
Before today White was mocked to go 9-12…not too too far from 14. After that 40 time though he may go up to 4 where Oakland is, which might make Amari drop towards us. Cleveland might want him at 12.
I still think Amari goes ahead of White. He is a more polished product.

These seem to be the 13 players who keep coming up in the first 15 picks of most mock drafts, so we have the opportunity to either draft one of these guys if they fall or have the pick of the litter on the rest of the 1st round talent.

Sneaking suspicion Mariotta drops a little. Still likely in the first 15 but maybe closer to 10 than 1

If it was so clear cut that Wallace needed to go, he’d be gone already. I chalk it up to one bad decision, by a talented WR who makes our team better. I can’t tell you what to feel, and vice-ersa, but if we cut him, we just guaranteed that we have to draft a top WR, and we just lost flexibilty, and we may lose out on a top big guy because we had to take a WR early.
I doubt we cut him alright but I would not surprised if he is not on the roster come opening day. I highly doubt it is one bad decision. You don’t pull yourself off the field because your team mate caught the the TD instead of you. that is bs. We talk about wanting a winning culture on our team. It’s hard to develop that when you have guys that pull themselves out of games so they can have a pity party.
I really want to keep Wallace — the cap just says we should unless they just can’t work it out somehow. Doesn’t mean we can put another horse in the stable though to run his paces until next year when Wallace is cuttable.
Wouldn’t even mind that guy in the first….even if I think that would mean a goodbye to Hartline and/or Gibson.

We need stars. The problem with the former GM is he drafted a bunch of good players. Only. With some injuries and a little bad luck (or bad coaching decisions) what you get with lots of good players and few stars is 8-8. With a few more stars you get into the playoffs, even if you “don’t belong” at every roster spot, because the stars win 2 games for you that maybe you would not otherwise have won. The difference in 10-6 and 8-8 is way more than two games. It is THE biggest two games difference in the NFL. (For a few teams the big 2 is 12-4 to 10-6 for home-field, but few teams live at that level for very long.) We don’t need players to compete for a starting spot. We need about 3-4 guys who will just walk right in and take a starting spot. 10-6.
naples — I still like the foundation though, especially with as young as the team is. And I get the star versus base argument, but for me the question is when are you ready to take the risk or spend the draft picks and/or money for the special talent. Truthfully don’t think we are ready to do that yet. In my mind, maybe next year.

University of Alabama-Birmingham wide receiver JJ Nelson only weighs 156 pounds. He did run a 4.29 though. Smell kick return specialist in his future.

Remember that little dude Foster? we brought in a few years back, he was 5-7 160 or something and ran a 4.3. He couldn’t make it on speed alone.
Nelson is 5’11 though, but not sure if that makes it better or worse. Might be able to reach up for passes better, but that also makes him mighty breakable.
156 is real thin at 5-11. I’m 5-9 160 though not in that kind of shape. I can’t imagine a guy my size playing in the NFL.

Not sure what you were saying about Wallace. I simply don’t want to cut him. If we can trade him and get a pick or 2, at least 3rd RD pick, I’d do it, but to cut him and get no compensation, and still take a big cap hit just doesn’t make sense to me. I really want some value back for him, or I’m keeping him.
Don’t think getting a third for him will be possible. Part of why I’m hoping to hear about him and Joe taking a trip to Disney World together.

Mike E, Miller didn’t quit in that game nor did a lot of other guys. Wallace sure as hell did though.
Meh, we didn’t really compete in that game, and it wasn’t just Wallace, but whatever. I’d worry much more about it if it were a game that meant something, and it was a game that we were competitive in, but that’s just me.
I think it’s unfair to say quit. I think the defense was spent going in and it showed. That has to get corrected because this team can’t keep falling apart late in the year or the goal with never be achieved. That’s Philbin’s biggest negative as a HC, how his team finishes. If it happens again he’s definitely gone.
My view on the OL is to add a solid rook from the draft, add a guard in FA who is starter caliber and continue developing James, Thomas, Smith and Turner. A big part of improving the OL is chemistry and these guys now have a year under their belts in Benton’s ZBS. Albert and Pouncey are the vets.

Very possible, but this is Wallace’s last big contract. He’s signed through 2017 and he turns 29 in August. His biggest asset is speed and when he starts to lose some of it his value will go way down.
He’s a cap cut candidate next year unless he shows it. Next year he can either earn what is left on his current one or play for what he’ll get on the next one. Either way his performance next year matters millions to him.
