So far, on the defensive side of the ball, I’ve looked at the safety prospects and linebacker prospects. Now, it’s time to take a look at the cornerbacks. Brent Grimes, as far as I’m concerned, is the the only Miami Dolphins CB you can pencil in as a starter. Everyone else, and I do mean E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E, is a question mark.
This draft seems to be deep at CB, but not top heavy. There are a couple of guys that are potential 1st RD picks, but none that are can’t miss talents.
Let’s take a look at this years CB prospects!
Trae Waynes CB – Michigan St. 6’0” 186
Before the combine, Waynes was considered as possibly the first CB to come off the board. After the combine, he solidified his status. Waynes ran a blistering 4.31 in the 40, and put up an impressive 19 reps on the bench.
His last season at Michigan St., Waynes had 3 INT’s along with 8 passes defensed, 1 sack, and 46 tackles, 34 solo.
Waynes can play in any scheme, but he would likely excel in a press scheme, where his size and strength would allow him to bump the receiver off his route. He is a very good cover corner who can stay with any receiver. One thing at the combine that concerns me was his poor cone and 20 YD shuttle scores, 7.06 in the cones, and 4.39 in the shuttle shows poor agility and body control.
NFL.com has Waynes as the #1 CB and rated at 6.27

Jalen Collins CB – LSU 6’1” 203
While Collins doesn’t have the speed of Waynes, he’s a very good CB in his own right. Collins didn’t fly at the combine, he ran a 4.48, which is fine for an NFL CB. Just to go back to the shuttle, Collins did the shuttle in 6.77, and was the top performer. He was a little better than Waynes in 20 YD shuttle at 4.27, which shows the ability to change directions quickly.
Collins is also leaving as a Junior, and finished his last season with 1 INT, 9 passes defensed, 38 tackles, 28 solo.
Collins only has 10 career starts, so that leaves him without a real body of work to look at. Teams are going to have to project his value. He has the size most teams are looking for. NFL.com has Collins as #2 for CB’s, and has him rated at 6.18.

Ronald Darby CB – Florida St. 5’11” 193
Darby performed well at the combine, running a sub 4.4 40 (4.38), and also showed off his hops with a 41.5” vertical.
Darby also left college as a Junior. His last season at Florida St., Darby had no INT’s, 4 passes defensed, 1 FF, and 43 tackles, 28 solo.
Darby is a former HS track star. He has very good body control. Darby has 2 years of experience playing CB, but only 2 INT’s in that time. Also a good cover corner, but hasn’t shown that he’s a playmaker or ballhawk.
NFL.com has Darby rated #3 with a 5.87 rating.
NFL comparison – Johnathan Joseph

Kevin Johnson CB – Wake Forest 6’0” 188
Johnson is rated as #4 by NFL.com. Johnson is the first CB that we’re looking at that has played all 4 seasons in college. As a Senior, Johnson had 1 INT, 6 passes defensed, 44 tackles, 32 solo. In 4 years, Johnson had 7 total INT’s, with 3 both as a Sophomore and Junior.
Johnson didn’t impress at the combine with his 40 time, just a decent 4.52, but he showed his athletic ability with a 130” broad jump, a 41.5” vertical, an impressive 6.79 cone, and a blazing fast 3.89 20 YD shuttle. While not top end speed fast, he plays fast, and has great agility, acceleration and recovery speed.
Very good cover man, excellent balance, and a good tackler who is willing to support the run. Can play in a press or zone scheme. Plays stronger than he looks.

Marcus Peters CB – Washington 6’0” 197
Marcus Peters is another Junior leaving college for the NFL. In his last season at Washington, Peters played in 9 games last season, but he was suspended for 1 game after throwing a sideline tantrum, and then later dismissed for run ins with the coaches. Sounds like a perfect fit with ol’ Joe, eh? In his 9 games, Peters came down with 3 INT’s, 7 passed defensed, 1 INT for a TD, and 1 FF. In his 3 year career, minus a few games his last season, Peters had a total of 11 INT’s, pretty impressive.
The combine didn’t do Peters any favors except for his 17 reps on the bench. He ran a 4.53, which is borderline acceptable for a CB. He’s a player though, and has good production. Physical player who likes to intimidate (even his coaches!)

PJ Williams CB – Florida St. 6’0” 194
Williams is the CB on the other side of the field with Ronald Darby at Florida St. That’s a talented secondary right there. Unlike Darby though, PJ Williams didn’t have a great combine. He ran a 4.57, which may hurt his chances as a starting CB. He did show athleticism with a 132” broad jump, and a 40” vertical.
Williams is also leaving FLA St. as a Junior. In his last season, Williams had 1 INT, 10 passes defensed, 1 FF, 1 sack, and 74 tackles, 52 solo.
Williams is ranked #6 on NFL.com with a 5.8 rating
Physical and competitive player who likes to press. Stays physical down the field, which could be a problem in the NFL, where hands-on is frowned upon. Despite his lack of top end speed, Williams is a very good cover corner.

Senquez Golson CB – Ole Miss 5’9” 176
This “mighty-mite” is one of my favorites, probably because he’s often compared to our own Brent Grimes. Ultra-competitive player, who is also a very productive player. A 4year starter at Mississippi, Golson in his Senior year snared 10 INT’s, 1 returned for a TD, had 8 passes defensed, 0.5 sacks, and 43 tackles, 33 solo.
CB with excellent ball skills (just like Grimes). Golson performed well at the combine, just didn’t stand out in any category, but well in all of them. He ran s 4.46, put up 15 reps, and a good 6.81 cone drill. He;’s a very good athlete, with a non-stop motor. He played mostly zone coverage, so he may need to prove he can play press as well, although not here in MIA.
Golson was rated #7 by NFL.com with a 5.73

D’Joun Smith CB – FAU 5’10” 187
I’m skipping around now (Well, not skipping around the house, just going out of order as far as rankings are concerned)
Smith is a very good athlete, and showed well at the combine. He didn’t kill any one category, but he did well across the board. He ran a 4.45, 18 reps on the bench, and a 6.96 cone drill.
Smith leaves FAU as a Senior. In his last season at FAU, Smith had 1 INT, (returned for a TD) 8 passes defensed, 1 FF, and 53 tackles, 32 solo. He had a great Junior season, with 7 INT’s, 13 passes defensed, 2 FF’s and a TD. The kid is a very competitive player, very spunky. Thing is, he didn’t face a high level of competition at FAU.

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu CB – Oregon 5’9” 192
Ekpre-Olomu was unable to perform at the combine, he is coming off a knee injury he sustained in preparation for the the playoff game against Florida St.
Ekpre-Olomu was a 4 YR starter at Oregon. He finished his Senior year with 2 INT’s, 9 passes defensed, 1 FF and 63 tackles, 43 solo.
Very fluid athlete with loose hips that can change direction well. Plays tough, and has good ball skills. The knee injury is a concern, so that alone will drop him some in the draft. Still, he has potential to be a great CB.

Charles Gaines CB – Louisville 5’10” 180
Gaines left Louisville as a Junior. In his last season, he had 2 INT’s, 10 passes defensed, 1 FF, 1 sack, and 36 tackles, 31 solo. In his Sophomore year, Gaines had 5 INT’s (1 returned for a TD). He was a WR when he came to Louisville, and was converted to a CB. This gives him somewhat of an advantage in coverage. Mirrors very well.
Gaines ran a 4.45 at the combine, which is pretty good. He didn’t show particularly well in any other category at the combine.

Quinten Rollins CB – Miami (Ohio) 5’11” 195
Interesting prospect who played basketball for 3 years, and then played football as a Senior at Miami of Ohio. He made an easy transition to football, and his basketball skills served him well as a CB. In his one and only season, Rollins had 7 INT’s (1 returned for a TD), 9 passes defensed, 1 FF, and 72 tackles, 53 solo.
Rollins, despite his excellent season will be an NFL project, and likely won’t be a starter right away. He also ran a 4.57 at the combine, which says he likely won’t be on the outside, but could possibly be a fit in the slot.

Lorenzo Doss CB – Tulane 5’10” 182
3 year starter at Tulane. Left Tulane as a Junior. In his last season, Doss had 3 INT’s, 9 passes defensed, 1 sack, and 48 tackles, 36 solo. In Doss’s Sophomore season, he had 7 INT’s, and 4 in his Freshman year.
Doss wasn’t impressive at the combine, running a decent 4.5 40, only putting up 9 reps at the bench, and a below average 33.5” vertical, and also did poorly in the cone drills at 7.20. Still, Doss is a player with good ball skills, and that will get him drafted.

There are other CB’s who may be in the picture, but there are only so many hours in the day. I think we’ll likely see one of the guys above, or maybe 2 on our team. We need CB’s, one because I’m not sure either Jamar Taylor or Will Davis can stay healthy enough to actually play an entire season, and Brent Grimes is going to be 32 by the time the season starts.

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins have “(internally discussed)” free agent Cecil Shorts.
Cleaning house at receiver, the Dolphins would be buying low on a player who appeared on the verge of exploding in 2012. Per reporter Barry Jackson, the Dolphins like what Shorts brings after the catch. According to Pro Football Focus, Shorts averaged 5.1 yards after the catch in 2014, a nice number. Recently released Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson offered nothing after the catch.
Well I for one am not for signing Suh. I am just against giving any ONE player 10%to One more of the yearly salary cap. It just seems wrong in the best way to get into trouble. I don’t see one player making that big of a difference To deserve 10% of the cap. I don’t think he will make that big of a difference. And I hope we don’t fall into that trap

Ok so i realized from reading one of Tim’s posts last night we are actually not all talking the same thing in the argument over Suh.
I think we have a few camps here.
1) Suh is coming here, bank on it.
2) I would really like Suh here, and believe we should make a offer.
3) Suh would be a nice addition but i dont think the Phins will make an offer.
4) Suh is not coming here, bank on it.
5) I dont want him here. (Reasons: bad character, too expensive, yadda yadda)
So which are you. Im 2). I think he instantly makes our defense formidable, and enhances areas we see as weaknesses that really are somewhat ok, just overburdened due to poor DT play. I want him here, but understand this is a business and i understand we have additional needs that could be at least adequately filled by the sacrifice of one player for 2-3. I dont think it has anything to do with affordability, as i think we will spend that money one way or the other, and i dont think it will be due character concerns, i think it will completely boil down to if the coaches/GM/Capologist, think whats best for the team is get multiple others.
That said, i have always felt Knighton is a good fit as he is one of the best run-stuffers and i do think it would help us on the LB front in the capacity of run support. I don’t though think thats the only area we were weak at, as out pressure of the QB from the DT position wasn’t great either and contributed to some of our losses. I think Knighton is somewhat weak in that respect so we still need to incorporate blitzes, which will open us up for vulnerabilities in the middle zone or flats of our defenses. None of the DT offer the whole package of expert run support and pass rush pressure other than Suh and thats why im so on board with getting him, as long as we have the resources to do so. Again i dont think this prevents us from solidifying the OL with a OG like Boiling, so im not worried abotu the overall impact on the rest of our FA.
D, if we’re serious about adding Suh I’m all for it. But I’m not going to be disappointed if we don’t because until the rumors started I didn’t think he was a realistic option.

As you will remember, i was convinced it was possible, but then i feel into a similar realization to you that nah, we wont do that and just accepted it. I moved to signing Knighton and Iupati, and then for value sake, Knighton and Boling, i was still getting flak we wouldnt spend that much. Later when a lot fo reports started coming in we were actually interested, and we were actually not just in the running but in a front row seat, i realize, maybe that would be the way the team would go, and maybe they did want to make a big move. All these reports coming in from a ton of different sources cant be complete BS. There is def something to it so there is no reason not to be optimistic about it.

Im just as sick of giving 7mil a year to guys who are just average. To me you look and you see with Suh, you are gonna get what ya pay for unless 1) injuries get him, or 2) you think he is the get a big contract and coast type. I admit we fucked up with Wallace, but that was because Wallace was never worth that money and we paid big for a guy who had concerns of how he would play after. You can compare it to a better decision made when we signed Albert who instantly turned the performance of our entire OL unit around. Both are examples of how it can go, but i think Albert had shown over course of multiple years, if he stays healthy, he’s one of the best. Thats a pretty safe spend, Suh, i feel is a safe spend. I understand you feel different and i understand im not changing your mind on it, but i do think you have to look at more than just the Wallace and Stabby examples. Also have to look at the regime’s. Ireland was impulsive, and he looked for big splash for appearances sake. I dont think he is as cautious as Hickey has seems to show he is and i dont think he worked with Philbin on those acquisitions as Hickey has been told he has to, from Ross. If they go after Suh i think they will have done their diligence and ill be happy with the sign.

And I’m pretty excited about the idea of landing Suh although I have concerns about building a team this way. If we get him we’ll have landed the top FA 3 years in a row which isn’t necessarily a good thing. But the argument that he a is a once in a generation player and we can lock him up for the majority of his prime is starting to gain traction as pretty sweet in my mind. a Player like Suh really could transform the identity of the defense and that’s something we desperately need on that side of the ball.
detroits defensive identity changed when they got a new coach last year. A coach can change the identity of a team not so much a single player. Specially not one that just got paid 100 million to live in south beach.

A few years back when RG3 was ransomed to the Redskins, many of our blog thought it was a good idea. I submit Mariota is worth much more than RG3 was worth, even then. He’s a better QB, has better size, and (I’m gonna say it!) IMHO is a better athlete.
The “better QB” being the operative term there. Chip Kelly knows what he’s doing if he trades up for Mariota and the Jets don’t get him, I’m telling you all. Be very very glad he didn’t end up in our division.

D, I am not opposed to Suh the player. I am FUNDAMENTALLY apposed to paying ONE player such a large portion of the salary cap. 1/53 of the team but 1/10th (and more) of the salary cap. I hate these big FA signings and historically they have NOT worked out for the teams involved. It would be a crushing cap hit and restrict us from improving the rest of the team. One BIG FATTY will not change the team that much IMO. We need weapons that score points and less expensive big fattys to protect the QB and open holes for our RB’s. Giving 15-20M per year to one player (EVEN A FREAKING QB!) is just wrong IMO.
I won’t be tooooo upset by it if they do, I just think it is foolish.

I’m not surprised Stanger, but a quick review of the stats shows that in his 2nd year (the first year he saw reps), he had 8 TDs with 44 catches and 615 yards, and he was a pretty good returner to boot. So the player was flashing before Peyton got there. Quick quiz, WHICH QB did Decker put up those sophmore numbers with?
So yeah, maybe Peyton got there as Decker hit his prime, but the talent was not Peyton made.
Yeah — but with Peyton he had two years north of 80 catches and 1000 yards, but you do have a point that it is hard to put up big numbers with the celibate one.
No denying that he got a lot better with Peyton, but 3rd year in the league is always a turning point, still, can’t deny that Peyton’s a sure fire way to juice a receivers production.

I think the Jets want to improve their offense, in any way they can. Some think they won’t draft a WR, but I think they still will, but maybe not with the #6 pick.
And well they should want to improve their offense. I just think Signing Decker last year, trading for Marshall this year, drafting one early this year…HELLO! It’s the QB!!!!!
I don’t want Suh cause of the cost, but we do have an advantage in going after him. One of the main reported competitors is the Raiders. State and local income tax for their players is a 13.3%. So if we over him say a hundred mil over six years…….the Raiders have to pony up $113 mil to match.
Our salary cap is effectively bigger than almost any other team in the league.
They math doesn’t work exactly like that, but the point remains. If he plays in Oakland he’ll have 9 games a year in CA (the road game in SD in addition to the others) the other 7 games he’ll pay taxes in the state where the wages were earned. So the discount it’s quite as big as has been quoted in the media.
I forgot about the out of town tax charges, but the difference is still there. Thanks god when I traveled around the country I didn’t have to file a tax return for each city I worked in.
Right? One CPA I know calls it the “jock tax” where states will go hard after athletes that don’t claim income in that state if that’s where they played the game(s). There’s judicial precedence for them getting it he says. He said most of his athletes file in 7-12 different jurisdictions.
Imagine what it must be like for a baseball or basketball player. They’ll have away dates for well over half the teams in the league, but maybe some states don’t have that law yet.
This guy does NBA, NHL and NFL players. Says they’re all the same. Thing is, many of those away teams are in the same state. So not each away game equals a different return, but he’s filed as many as 31 state returns for an NBA player.
Honestly from his standpoint it’s actually fairly easy. He just has to go through and declare which state the income is from and then fill out one electronic form that populates the forms for all the rest.

Foles is a good QB. He’ll probably help the Jets NOW more than Mariota would.
I mean, it’s hard for me to argue against that since Rookie QBs tend to not set the world on fire their first year, but I do actually disagree with it. I think Mariota’s going to prove very early on that he was all that and then some.
I also think Foles is an “ok” QB. I would put him middle of the league maybe. Not much higher…but that’s a big upgrade from Geno, who I’d put in the bottom 1/3rd.

Rookies are locked into cheap contracts and the NFL collective bargaining agreement mandates you spend near your cap. At some point, if you draft incredibly well, you still have to fork over dollars to someone YR to YR. Suh’s guaranteed money would only be paid out likely in first 2 years with maybe some in 3rd year.
Watt isn’t getting paid 100 mill and neither is Gerald McCoy who has the same type of deal.
If they are cut after this season for whatever reason, the Texans only take a 6 mill cap hit in 2016 while TB only takes a 1.5 mill cap hit in 2016 year. Both players have earned 30-35 mill through their first two years of their current deals.
I don’t get that argument when we’re talking about very serious cap consequences. It’s his team, being capstrapped kills teams. So that’s why he cares.
Thanks for replying for me Jahn. (no sarcasm) I agree, and will add that I think Al’s analysis of the length of the cap burden is WAY off. The straight salary of a 100m 6 year contract is $16.66M per year. They are usually set up with big signing bonuses and guaranteed money which get’s spread out over the length of the deal. We are tight on cap space now and need to sign Tannehill so we will be even tighter once THill goes from 4m to 12-16M per year. (which galls me to btw) so the structure would have to push the $$ out until later. He is “only” 28 but in 4 years there will still be dead money attached to him, and IMO a substantial amount because of Thill needing to be budgeted for and our current cap situation. When this 300+ lber starts breaking down at the down side of 30 will it still be worth it? I say no, but I guess we will see.

I know you can’t give the QB all the credit, but Foles is 14-4 his last 2 seasons. He’s played well. Last year was a little rough, but the previous year was pehnomenal. Even if he’s somewhere in between, that’s pretty good, and likely good enough to get the Jets in playoff contention.
I don’t think it’s somewhere between, I think last year is what he is. 1st year he was lucky to be in an offense that had DCs all over the NFL spinning their heads around, and with some film on Foles, in 8 games last year he had 13 TDs, and 10 INTs. I think that’s what we see going forward. So…better than Geno, but not much better than average IMHO. Also, what scrambling he did 2 years ago, not sustainable for a 6’6″ guy.
But this is all argumentative, just my opinion on it and time will tell. But I will say this, 2 Eagle additions to the AFC East that people here are worried about (McCoy and Foles), aren’t scaring me at all.

That is also a major concern about playing in / putting a team permanently in London. Great Britain has a HUGE “sports tax” The Dolphins players will have to file a GB tax return again this year for their game check, but GB says they want $ on the bonuses, and everything, endorsements, etc. (Not specifically about the NFL games but went to the mat in the last few years regarding racing teams and Futbol) I remember reading an article about the racing stuff because they advertize on their cars and GB wanted part of that advertizement income as well as part of the tax collected.

I’m not ascairt of Foles, and I’m definitely not ascairt of McCoy. I think in the Jets case though, they just got better, getting Marshall and Foles, and I think BUF basically is a wash, with McCoy instead of Jackson and Spiller.

Other than Tannehill, who’s set to get a big pay day next season? Suh’s guaranteed money will come in 2015 + 2016 cap, the rest of the years is just a formality in cap allocation exercises. Can pay Tannehill 1/8 of his contract in 2016 or whatever small ass amount and then pump him up in 2017. Wake is getting cut at some point over the next year or so IMO at his current salary and Albert might not be around either in 2017 either.
Other than the highest paid position in the entire sport? Uh, don’t care to spend the time answering it. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of players to replace just like every offseason.

I just don’t see the risk with the NFL’s new CBA limiting rookie contracts. It opens the door for big swings and risk taking and an outlet to dump if it doesn’t work.
The new CBA hardly eliminated the risk of signing a huge FA contract. If we cut Wallace and go post J1, he’d be on the books for 3 years. This contract would be even bigger than that. The new CBA isn’t all that new anymore, it’s been in place for four league years now. It’s strengths and weaknesses are well vetted, and that’s the reason you don’t see 31 teams vying for Suh’s services.

I don’t worry about what other teams do. I worry about my team getting better. To be a good team you have to beat good teams. I’m not one who roots for weak schedules and lesser opponents in the playoffs etc. The goal is to be the best so why worry about the competition? Do you want the weakest road to a championship that has an * next to it?
or cheat your way to a championship like the pats do it.
I think you’re talking about 2 different things. Our division rivals getting better makes it tougher on us, and if you look around, we’ve had enough trouble of our own getting to the playoffs, so our rivals getting stronger makes it that much harder. I hope one day we can have a good enough team that we don’t have to worry about what everyone else is doing, but right now, we’re far from that. I hate to see the Jets get stronger no matter what, because we have a difficult time with them as they are.

If cheating doesn’t get you an asterisk, a weak playoff schedule isn’t going to. There’s no such thing as a weak playoff schedule in the NFL. Every team that gets there is good, every team that advances is very good.
I do tend to agree with worrying about your team getting good enough to beat the best out there rather than “worrying” about other teams, but that doesn’t mean we can see some obvious things that would make our rivals better or worse and have an opinion. Rock — that is a great point. But one point that will take away from that from a federal tax point at least is you get credit for foreign income taxes paid (and US state and local ones for that matter) on your federal return. Pretty sure that anyone playing for the London Jaguars will maintain US residency.
Mike Florio claims that it is the Phins or the Lions for Suh, and all the other teams mentioned in the hunt are only being used for leverage. So if we are the stalking horse we are at least the primary one.
He also says he has heard of $15 mil per year as the likely ending point. Hey $90 mil over six years is better than a $100 mil.
This is the first time I’ve seen a number that low. I could stomach that. Probably still thinking that’s a bit too aggressive to go in FA, but I could live with it.
Really, the 90M isn’t an issue I would want to know how much is guaranteed to make a good observation on it. 6 year deals are full of “Agent reputation” numbers so it’s hard to say what it would really look like.
In this day and age — I figure any six-year deal is really three years and then cancel if you are willing to eat the leftover signing bonus.

Jets re-signed ILB David Harris to a three-year, $21.5 million contract with $15 million guaranteed.
The deal locks up Harris through his age-33 season. Rex Ryan’s Bills were poised for an aggressive run at Harris had he hit the open market, but the Jets were even more aggressive about keeping him, guaranteeing Harris nearly 70 percent of this contract. Harris is a three-down linebacker who struggles in coverage but is a highly productive tackler. He’ll likely be new coach Todd Bowles’ defensive signal caller at “Mike” ‘backer.
That was his market all along. Not surprised, he told his agent he wanted to retire a Jet.
