Welcome to Miami Mr. Suh

By John D (son of a son of a shula)

Ndamukong Suh has signed his 6 year – 100 million dollar contract with the Miami Dolphins.  Now what?

Now it’s time to go to work. Time for him to get acclimated with his new surroundings, his new coaches, his new teammates, and his new fan base. This is a man who is driven to be great, while he did sign the largest contract ever for a defensive player in the NFL he won’t settle and collect his fat checks. Suh wants to be great, he puts the time in preparing himself, studying, honing, and working out doing everything you would expect from a true professional playing in the National Football League.

Now it’s time to go to work on changing the Dolphins fortunes on the field. End the late season collapse. End years of mediocrity. End years of frustration. Restore vigor and hope once again into a proud franchise. Can Suh do that? He can’t do it alone but in his presence everyone can get better, everyone can strive for more, everyone must do more.  Suh is a huge cornerstone to build on; he won’t waver, shy away, or settle he is here to lead and to win.

I first became familiar with Suh when he was playing in the 2009 Holiday Bowl. Nebraska vs Arizona. I watched in amazement at how Suh would just move his man out of the way and make a tackle. It was like he’d let them block him until he decided he wanted to make a tackle and he just threw the guy away and blew up the play. I can’t recall having seen anything like it since seeing Reggie White play ball. The only other player in my lifetime who was just as ferocious besides White was Deacon Jones. That’s elite company for Suh if you are scoring at home.

WHITE PEETE

Of course there have been many, many great defensive linemen that have played over the last fifty years. However there have only been those  three that have stood out in such a profound way to me. They all play with a meanness that frankly is scary. They all have unimaginable power, the ability to use leverage as if it was an innate sense and unbelievable quickness for men their size. Now I know Deacon Jones and Reggie White  played Defensive End and Suh plays Defensive Tackle but Suh plays every bit like Jones and White.

130604111417-deacon-jones-johnny-unitas-tim10-single-image-cut

If I were to round my top Defensive front players into a Mount Rushmore the player to add would be Mean Joe Greene. He’s tossed a few linemen around as well.

Green – White – Suh – Jones

MtRushmoreof the DL

Now that’s elite company.

For you older Dolphin fans the player most like Suh from our past would be Manny Fernandez. Fernandez was relentless, fierce and crazy. He never got the national recognition that a lot of other players around the league  did, I guess when you play on the “No-name Defense” that tends to happen. Manny played with rage and was very difficult to block he piled up tackles on that defense and was a large part of the success of the 72 and 73 Dolphins.

SBJ200209232401-01

Suh caught my attention at the 09 Holiday Bowl and although I was late to arrive I immediately knew what I was looking at. We had the 12th pick in the 2010 draft and I would blog incessantly on how we should “pay the freight” and move up to get him. I recall one blogger asking what style of D we would play since Suh is not a Nose Tackle and we were a 3-4 defense and I remember answering “whichever style Suh wants”. Of course we didn’t trade up, we traded back in fact. After 5 years of no playoffs and struggling to be a .500 team perhaps I was right those five years ago.

Alas, Suh has found his way to Miami where we can all relish and enjoy what this great player has in store for us. This is no ordinary free agent signing. We didn’t just sign an average to above average NFL player here, we got a bonafide Star and great player in Suh. Be grateful Dolphan, rejoice! And be happy.

Suh is here for You!

Not sure how I feel about it with his concussion history.

“He’s young and he’s willing to work,” Cameron said, expounding on what he saw in Tannehill that made him want to come to Miami. “He puts the hours in. They were singing his praises all day today, and it is definitely a big part of my decision.”

good article. You mentioned leverage during the article and the best I have ever had the pleasure of this was D.Steveson(sic) he could tip over a D lineman with his finger. It was like he was a karate expert. I missed many plays watching him during games but it was worth the price of admission. Brute force never won against him. I think Suh has the brute force along with leverage abilities to dominate opponents and games.

    Thanks Son,
Agreed it’s time to get to work. All the worrying and fretting and wondering is useless now. The only thing that really matters is what this team does with what it has now.

If we resign Clay we will have 15mil at least tied up in the TE position. That’s quite a lot. Again I think if we resign Clay we might cut Wallace. Clay and Cameron Landry rookie 1st and rotation between Matthews and 2nd rookie or Hazel would still be a formidable offense with future written all over it

So listening this morning to NFL radio, the goons (Bob Papa and Ross Tucker) talking about how great the Jets are now, and how all 3 teams (Besides the Patriots), should be at or around 10-6. A female Dolphins fan calls in and brings up the Dolphins signing cameron to a 2 YR contract, and she wanted to know if the Dolphins are really working on a contract for Charles Clay. Papa says he can’t understand why they would do that, why both? Tucker says they drafted Arthur Lynch in the 5th RD last year, and Dion Sims in the 4th in’13, why would they need 4 TE’s, and how are they going to get them all on the field?

To Tuckers credit, right before the hour break, which is why they cut off the Dolphins fan, he said maybe Lazor is going to use Clay and Cameron like Philly used Ertz and Celek. Yeah, that’s the ticket Ross, maybe we’ll do that! Maybe since Tannehill isn’t a great deep passer, maybe we’ll focus on his strengths. Makes me also think that Wallace might be on his way out. Not for sure, but I’m thinking it’s a legit possibility now, especially if we do sign Clay.

    • twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

Add a rookie deep threat WR on the cheap to replace Wallace and we’re good to go on offense. Well, other than a bit more online help/depth which can be had somewhere rounds 2-4 if we’re talking guards.

  12. twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

Pretty much agree with your assessment, D. Though my guess is they are waiting to see how the draft shakes out before they decide what to do with Wallace. If one of the top tier WRs that they are high on falls to them at 14 then Wallace is probably gone (or offered a take it or leave it restructure). If no WR they covet falls to 14 then I’m not sure how it plays out with Wallace to be honest.

  13. twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

As for Clay, like some have suggested I think they are keeping the transition tender on him to make the Bills have to pony up and not get him on the cheap (especially if there are no other offers out there for his services). While I’m wary of the Cameron signing due to the concussion history, it was a relatively smart move. If they let Cameron go back to Cleveland, then the Dolphins are left in a bidding war with the Bills for Clay and potentially are left with overpaying or no TE. Also, it leaves Cleveland without a TE now and thus the Bills may have to potentially get in a bidding war with Cleveland for Clay (and with a base of appx. $7 mil to start the bidding).

As a bonus, Clay can’t be too pissed about the situation or with eh Dolphins, as with the Dolphins keeping the transition tag in place, he won’t be stuck with a lowball offer he has to take from the remaining team in this TE musical chairs should one of the teams above bow out.

  14. convict's avatar convict says:

Hasn’t Wallace already been paid his $3m roster bonus? Don’t really see him being cut at this point – we’d have no speed on the field – allowing opposing defenses to really take away the middle of the field and have their safeties cheat in the box.

    • twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

I think the $3 million is due in 2 days? But yeah that does throw a monkey wrench into the idea of dropping him after that. As for the other part, hopefully just get a rookie speed WR in the draft. Much cheaper and accomplishes the same thing (and hopefully with less headaches). The flip side of that is it takes away a draft spot that could be used on other needs…

    Twice

I’ve been thinking WR in the first RD for a while now, but now I’m not so sure. I can see O-line, LB or CB.

    • twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

Unless it’s a tackle/guard swing type, I don’t see O-line in the first, but yeah it’s definitely a need. But if straight guar, then no need to throw away a first rounder on them unless we trade down.

LB I’m not completely sold either – you could almost drop the bag boy from the local grocer in behind Suh and they should be unmolested by the opposing o-line to make plays.

CB I think they roll with the young guys and maybe pick up a veteran camp casualty and probably someone later in the draft to develop just in case.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If La’el Collins was there, he’s a guy who can play anywhere from LT to RT, except C, and he’s a guy that play with a nasty demeanor too. He’s probably the top rated LT on the board. If not O-line, LB or CB, what do you think we do ion the 1st?

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

On the other side of this, I think putting all our eggs in Cameron’s basket is a real risk. I know I sound like broken record, but his next concussion is likely his last, and he’ll be out for the year, and most likely his career. That leaves Sims and Lynch, which scares the heck out of me.

I want to re-sign Clay too
I would love to see Cameron and Clay on the filed at the same time

I still want that redzone threat WR though

    OG – CB- LB – S – WR

I guess those are our needs

did we sign 2 CBs yesterday?

I hope there is some truth to the Mathis rumor (even though it was shot down)
I would love to fill our OG need with a vet

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not if we have trade Dion Jordan for him. He’s going to be 34 this season, that’s a horrible trade. If it’s for a late RD pick, like a 6th or 7th, fine.

  23. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The Patriots are in worse shape a CB than we are

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Michael Thomas is a good looking player, our secondary struggled when he went down last year. I could see him having a big role this year with Aiken.

  25. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Cameron followed the Jimmy Graham path to the NFL – a basketball player who turned to football. Though Cameron gave up basketball (at Brigham Young) early for football (at USC), he wasn’t moved from receiver to tight end until his senior year (he had one touchdown his senior season there).

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Son, nice write up. I thought the same thing about Suh when I first saw him play for Nebraska. In fact I may have tuned in because you were talking him up. He would toss OL around like rag dolls. Still does that in the NFL too.

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think both Thomas and Aikens will be factors in our secondary.

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Our secondary struggled because we had CB’s we just called up off the street. I think you’re giving too much credit to Michael Thomas, but I don’t have a problem with him earning the job, I just hope we draft some competition for him.

  30. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

WOW, Pork Chop came to free agency out of shape, got spurned by his old Bronco DC & now HC coach Del Rio in Oakland. Porky settles for the Skins on a 1yr $4M deal.

Makes me glad we went the extra mile & signed The Suhminator.

  31. convict's avatar convict says:

I just don’t see the relevance of a re-signing Clay with what we do with Wallace other than just needing cap space. IMO, we cannot go into the draft with Landry and Matthews as our starting WRs. There will be too much desperation to address the position early – when we also have pressing needs at LB, DT, and the OL.

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, if Thomas and Aikens don’t end up as starters, I see them definitely part of nickel and dime packages.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It sounds like McCain will be our nickel corner.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s fine with me. All I’m saying is we should aim higher. I’m not saying they don’t belong on the team, I think we should try to do better.

I say good luck to anyone trying to displace Thomas, he’s proven time and again that he can play.

  33. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I was doing some research on Sammy Seamster who could compete @ FS in training camp to go along with Aikens, Don Jones, & Micheal Thomas.
Seamster entering his 2nd year out of Mid Tenn St. is 6’0 205, but runs a sub 4.5 and has 33″ arms with a 35″ vertical. He’d be a decent center fielder.

I think RD 1 comes down to LB and WR. And from there it comes down to whether we shed Ellerbe or Wallace. If Ellerbe, we go LB, if Wallace then WR… IF BOTH?? who the hell knows, maybe a kicker. lol

  40. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m not a fan of Wallace, I think he’s an immature douche but I think we look pretty good with Wallace, Landry, Cameron and Clay as our weapons. Pick up a guard or two in the draft in the mid rounds and we can focus the rest of the draft on defense and depth.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Assuming we sign Clay. If that doesn’t happen then we still need another weapon which will probably be a WR in the draft.

  41. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Jordan Cameron said his concussions are not a concern from him moving forward. His baseline for brain activity is the same as 4-years ago.

  42. convict's avatar convict says:

Apparently, Wallace got the $3m roster bonus already..

“Wallace, who has been on the trading block all offseason, and Ellerbe were each guaranteed $3 million because of a clause that was triggered last March 15. According to a league source, each contract does feature offset language, which would allow the Dolphins to reduce their payout based on what each player makes in 2015 if there are released, and do re-sign with another team.

However, that $3 million payout due has made it difficult for the Dolphins to trade each player.”

That’s exactly right. Once Thomas went down our defense started trending downward. He had become the Nickle along with being the 3rd safety in our 3 safety packages. Once he was lost Wilson got more PT….. End of story.

Son – I see them going for the best WR available (and who they feel is top tier) at 14. One of them has a decent chance of dropping to them there (not likely Cooper or White but you never know). Someone like Parker. If no WR they like is there, then I think they try to trade back. Barring that, they go BPA O-Line. Mike E and others call on Collins if available there – that could work.

Or maybe they go TE? lol

MikeE——-How did you make out yesterday with your work problem. Sounded like a issue with the company that sold the db to your company. Interface software development engineer to be specific. 1st off your company should have used a sample group to test software.2nd backups of old data should have been used. The good news is you can restore from your last backup and then do a data merge of new data. Unfortunately the DB company that sold you the software program doesn’t sound like they have the necessary skills to correct this problem. I talked to my friend that works with compucom and he mentioned they should have product liability insurance if any data is lost and you may be able to recover any labor performed by your companies employees. He also said you get what you pay for in software development.

OK, I’m all over the place…. summation of where the D is…

    1. Double teams shift to Suh now, not Wake. Our pass rush FINALLY gets to do what it wants. It will make so many people behind them “better”. It’s a matter of health.
    2. LB therefore seems to be the priority. Good riddance Wheeler (aka I forgot how to tackle). Are we set at MLB with Misi? or do we fill that role with a rookie? I don’t see Ellerbe moving back to the middle.
Defense is so close to being ready to go. (Injuries disrupt ANY team in a salary cap league)

    3. Offense was looking good until Albert went down. WE ALL cringed and knew what it meant, even though we were in denial at the time. I knew “the season was over”. Maybe Big Jake would come back as a back up (not sure teams are willing to pay him as a starter … we will see). OG’s really aren’t available now in FA. … Draft is weak compared to last few years. LT, RT, C are set. Solve the Guard position and our entire offense gets way better. Give a QB time, and WRs will find the open space, even if they create it away from the designed route.
Offense needs to fix Guard more than anything…

If this game is won in the trenches, DL is tops in league, OL is 3/5s done. A solid LG and we are definitely a better team than last year if we do nothing else.

With DT basically off the list in the draft with the signing of Suh, and I read recently somewhere that the org really likes Francis and Johnson. So I see us addressing LB and DB in the draft, maybe even two each. So WR and OL are likely the picks on offense.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Or Running Back, or Safety (but DB would include that I guess). Though those are admittedly less likely than WR, OL, LB and CB.

I like a trade down scenario and nabbing Kendricks so I can nanny-nanny-pooh-pooh at you while he has a probowl rookie season behind Suh and Mitchell. 😛

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think we’ll draft a RB. Maybe sign a couple UDFAs and let the guys we have compete.

I’m not anti-Kendricks. I’d like him on the team and see where he fits. It’s possible we could trade down and take him.

True to the South Park theme, there’s an episode where the school buys a new software program. Every thing that goes wrong requires an expensive upgrade to fix, and they just keep digging deeper.

The cost of the software is going to be the biggest inhibitor to any change you’d like to see Mike. Someone higher up than you has their reputation riding on that program and is not going to likely accept responsibility that it’s not working. He probably will buy an upgrade that includes better “training” for you rank and file types.

  73. drg's avatar drg says:

I’m onboard with finding a way to keep Clay. Our cap is blown to hell anyway, so why not? Run plenty of 2 or even 3 TE sets and let’s make teams defend them with LBs or we can run a ton of read option if the defense goes small. Lazor’s offense and Tannehill’s strength is quick drops, read option, and play action hitting the seams. Seems to me we have or can cheaply acquire the right WRs to run that and having 3 TEs that can do serious damage would make the offense a real threat and hopefully improve our RZ production.

Depth and injuries scare the hell out of me, but no going back at this point. Wise or not, this is an all in year and might as well approach it as such.

I’m all for what you mentioned to Rhino – We need an “upgrade”. They definitely did not train us properly, they had one guy on 4 computers showing 19 people for a 5 hour period. If we sign Clay

Here is an article in suh’s cap numbers

Suh slated to have massive cap number in 2016

2015 – not even worth discussing
2016 – huge hit over 28m. This is the big hit
    2017 – under 15m. That is nothing

2018-2020 are all between 21m and 23m per year. That is more than Wallace received
But 2018 is 3 years from now

Did you know the salary cap goes up about 10m per year?

2016 is a big salary cap hit

But by 2018 those 20m won’t eat up such a big chunk of our cap
2017 is not a big hit (like 2015)
It’s a really smart structure that DOES NOT kill us
Factor in how much the cap goes up each year when you consider these numbers

Lets not put too much negative juju out there eh? He’s signed. It was a calculated risk by Tannenbaum (according to him), so if it pays great. If it doesn’t, well, I have a feeling that we’re only out the first years’ salary and can move on. This isn’t all that different than the Keller signing, just a bit of inflation, and a premium for Cameron’s skill and the TE drought.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m just joking, but I really didn’t want to sign him. Especially not at the expense of Clay. His concussion history is what it is, it doesn’t matter what I think or say.

  96. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Tim, yards per route run is basically, take all his yards and divide it by the number of times he ran routes. It’s an indication of what kind of impact a receiver has on the game as a whole. Think if it this way, the larger that number is, the more the opposing DC has to game plan for that player.

    Piggy,
I think you’re trying to hard on the cap. I understand everything you’re trying to say, but Wallace is getting 13-14m, so 20+ is substantially higher than that. Furthermore, that salary cap inflation affects every player in the league. Minimums go up, free agent demands go up etc. So it’s not like you can keep spending flat across the board and just attribute it all to one player.

All that said, I’m not worried about it for now. Suh gets hurt and we’re fucked, there’s no way around it, but for now, if he produces like you all tell me he will, things will work out.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t understand why you are pointing out that it affects every player

      It actually affects every team

22m is a substantially less chunk of the cap room if the cap is 30m higher than it used to be. There is no arguing that.

So when you look at those numbers from 18-20 you have to factor in how much higher the cap will be.

I’m not trying to do anything with the numbers

They structure the cap hit with 2 of the first 3 years with lower cap numbers for a reason – to get the benefit of cap inflation in the final 3 years

People look at the numbers as gasp and have no idea how the cap works

They report the guaranteed money but don’t even mention the cap hits or the structure

Why even mention guaranteed money, it means so little in the scope of cap space

      2016 is the big hit
The rest is not really bad at all
I don’t see how you don’t see that

  97. D's avatar D says:

Kendricks does have an outside shot to be a 1st round pick, maybe late first, but he isn’t quite as good as those guys who have gone in the first previusly. He compares pretty nicely with the way Borland was perceived last year and Borland was taken in the 2nd by a team with little needs(by that i mean other teams would have waited to the 3rd). I think team realize this group has a bunch of pretty good guys but no Keuchley or Mosely’s. Kendick is riding a high right now but i would bet we dont take him at 14 and he gets taken somewhere late first, early second. I think though we have a very good chnace of seeing Perryman, McKinney, and Anthony at our pick in the 2nd, potentially all 3.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

It’s not an outside shot when most mocks have him going in the first, it’s a liklihood. Granted, most have him going 30th to the Packers..but hey we wouldn’t want to scoop the packers on a LB would we? That could never work out. 🙂

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Your Borland analysis is just confirmation bias. LOL…

  98. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay, that could change the 1st round. He’s a fast WR who’s had a good start to his 2 year career. This could also mean we’re moving Wallace.

      • D's avatar D says:

He’s a REALLY good slot kind of guy, very good route runner, and slippery in the middle. Maybe the trade is for Wallace, lol, but given their cap situation, i doubt it.
