Welcome to Miami Mr. Suh

By John D (son of a son of a shula)

Ndamukong Suh has signed his 6 year – 100 million dollar contract with the Miami Dolphins.  Now what?

Now it’s time to go to work. Time for him to get acclimated with his new surroundings, his new coaches, his new teammates, and his new fan base. This is a man who is driven to be great, while he did sign the largest contract ever for a defensive player in the NFL he won’t settle and collect his fat checks. Suh wants to be great, he puts the time in preparing himself, studying, honing, and working out doing everything you would expect from a true professional playing in the National Football League.

Now it’s time to go to work on changing the Dolphins fortunes on the field. End the late season collapse. End years of mediocrity. End years of frustration. Restore vigor and hope once again into a proud franchise. Can Suh do that? He can’t do it alone but in his presence everyone can get better, everyone can strive for more, everyone must do more.  Suh is a huge cornerstone to build on; he won’t waver, shy away, or settle he is here to lead and to win.

I first became familiar with Suh when he was playing in the 2009 Holiday Bowl. Nebraska vs Arizona. I watched in amazement at how Suh would just move his man out of the way and make a tackle. It was like he’d let them block him until he decided he wanted to make a tackle and he just threw the guy away and blew up the play. I can’t recall having seen anything like it since seeing Reggie White play ball. The only other player in my lifetime who was just as ferocious besides White was Deacon Jones. That’s elite company for Suh if you are scoring at home.

WHITE PEETE

Of course there have been many, many great defensive linemen that have played over the last fifty years. However there have only been those  three that have stood out in such a profound way to me. They all play with a meanness that frankly is scary. They all have unimaginable power, the ability to use leverage as if it was an innate sense and unbelievable quickness for men their size. Now I know Deacon Jones and Reggie White  played Defensive End and Suh plays Defensive Tackle but Suh plays every bit like Jones and White.

130604111417-deacon-jones-johnny-unitas-tim10-single-image-cut

If I were to round my top Defensive front players into a Mount Rushmore the player to add would be Mean Joe Greene. He’s tossed a few linemen around as well.

Green – White – Suh – Jones

MtRushmoreof the DL

Now that’s elite company.

For you older Dolphin fans the player most like Suh from our past would be Manny Fernandez. Fernandez was relentless, fierce and crazy. He never got the national recognition that a lot of other players around the league  did, I guess when you play on the “No-name Defense” that tends to happen. Manny played with rage and was very difficult to block he piled up tackles on that defense and was a large part of the success of the 72 and 73 Dolphins.

SBJ200209232401-01

Suh caught my attention at the 09 Holiday Bowl and although I was late to arrive I immediately knew what I was looking at. We had the 12th pick in the 2010 draft and I would blog incessantly on how we should “pay the freight” and move up to get him. I recall one blogger asking what style of D we would play since Suh is not a Nose Tackle and we were a 3-4 defense and I remember answering “whichever style Suh wants”. Of course we didn’t trade up, we traded back in fact. After 5 years of no playoffs and struggling to be a .500 team perhaps I was right those five years ago.

Alas, Suh has found his way to Miami where we can all relish and enjoy what this great player has in store for us. This is no ordinary free agent signing. We didn’t just sign an average to above average NFL player here, we got a bonafide Star and great player in Suh. Be grateful Dolphan, rejoice! And be happy.

Suh is here for You!

  2. D's avatar D says:

Reason i like McKinney is you can move him around which open up formation. As of right now his best talent fit is outside, but i also dont think he is a liability on the inside. With a little game time i think he transitions into a hella good ILB, with size and speed you dont normally see as a combination in an ILB. I think a guy like he is, really opens defensive strategies, and my only concern is if our staff can get him there. I am optimistic they can do it, since they definitely helped Jenkins improve. Talent is there it just needs to be refined a little at the MLB spot. He’s a sick blitzer.

    • D's avatar D says:

So i guess to answer your question Mike, i like him better at OLB now but i really like him at ILB for our future with him.

If any player gets hurt we are fucked
What happens to our team if Tanny gets hurt
We saw what happened when Albert got hurt

  4. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

So we are acquiring Kenny Stills….wow Front office doing work!

  5. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@NFLFilmStudy: Can confirm that Miami is in line to acquire Kenny Stills from the Saints. Mike Tannenbaum putting his stamp firmly on the franchise so far

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

How do we know that this wasn’t part of Hickey’s plan as well? Everything is being credited to Tannenbaum but I bet Hickey has done more of the leg work.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

That’s why I said FO in the previous post 😀. I agree people aren’t giving Hickey enough credit. He was widely applauded by those who visited team HQs

      • D's avatar D says:

I think its an active off season, last years wasnt nearly as full throttle so the belief is that its Tannebaums influence. I think Hickey’s first FA was pretty full throttle, getting Albert was a BIG signing. The Suh signing is just such a blockbuster sign though it seems, i guess to most, bigger than Hickey was possible of lol.

  6. D's avatar D says:

Jahn i know he is a PAC 12 guy, but i bet i have seen as much video on him as you have. I reviewed several games, full games with him to see how he plays every snap and not just his highlights and ill admit he is good, he’s the best instinct driven, and refined technique prospect available. I dont see him as a pick at 14, scoop all ya want but if im looking at pick 14 and i got a guy like Parker, White, Cooper, DGB, etc. Its possible we would trade back and take him, but i think only if all those other options arent there. He wont make it to our second pick because i do believe as most the mocksters, he is a late first to early second pick. You are trying to debunk my argument by making it. As you said some have him going in late first and thats what i said.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We traded Ellerbe and our 3rd rd pick for Stills.

    Pig,

We will be copying the Saints in 2016 unless this team wins 10+ games and makes the playoffs. It’s all in this year. Make the playoffs and they’ll figure out a way to make it work in 2016 by probably leveraging our cap space in future years again. I’m not crazy about it, but at least we’re taking a shot I guess.

If Tannehill keeps trending up it’s going to turn out alright. If he plateaus or puts up worse numbers this year we are screwed. Simple as that, IMO.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I don’t think so DRG
If you take a cap hit for one year
      You dont dismantle your team

Unless you don’t like the team
      If we go 8-8 again
I’m sure it will be a makeover
But that has little to do with cap space and salary issues

  10. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Holy shit, so we gave up Ellerbe and a 3rd for Stills. Fuck yeah!

  11. D's avatar D says:

Hickey is one of those guys who is well spoken and seems very likable. He is a way better people person than Irelan and i saw that in the first interview with him. He seems pretty charming imo too. I think he has A LOT to do with some of these signings, and i believe Tannebaum is working a lot of his connections too. Its a good combination and so far the results look pretty good.

  12. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@nfldraftscout: Kenny Stills, Jarvis Landry and Jordan Cameron? Good job, @MiamiDolphins

  13. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Stills is the Wallace deep threat replacement

Doesn’t mean Wallace is gone this year
But in 2016 Wallace is gone

And if Philbin needs to bench wallAce
    We have a deep threat

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

The good news is you have deep threats all around. Try to double Stills and you leave Cameron 1 on 1 or Wallace one on one. The spacing underneath is going to be crazy.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Ellerbe just freed up $5.65M.

  15. drg's avatar drg says:

I like Stills. Better than what we would have gotten with our third round pick at WR and helps with cap. Stills is a great fit for this offense and Tannehill.

@ckparrot: JEFF IRELAND IS IN NEW ORLEANS! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  17. D's avatar D says:

He put up almost 1k yards last year but he was only a 5th round selection a couple years ago. I think the 3rd round pick was so they would take Ellerbe lol, i think if we had just done it for picks we could have gotten away with a lower round one lol…..

  18. D's avatar D says:

Good thing about Stills is he has speed and deep threat capability but the guy is wicked good across the middle too.

  19. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

wow, I can’t find news anywhere but here!!!! Kenny Stills makes me happy. We are so going LB in our draft now. Now OLB is also a possibility… maybe Beasley??? 🙂

  20. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@AbramsonPBP: Jeff Ireland becomes a college scout for the #Saints and all of a sudden they make a bunch of bizarre moves. This one benefits the #Dolphins

    • D's avatar D says:

Lol Phins fans blaming Ireland for all Saints mistakes now….lol too funny.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

he wants to prove Ellerbe was a good move. LOL

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

That’s fuckin’ ridiculous. He’s a scout. He doesn’t have jurisdiction to firesale the whole roster. The Saints are digging out of their superbowl hangover and the contracts that accompanied it. It’s got nothing to do with Ireland.

  21. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

D, I think you’re right about tossing in the 3rd rounder… dumping the big salaries of Wheeler and Ellerbe to rebuild our LB corps. Many said when Suh signed: we are putting our $ in DL and going rookie payroll at LB. Could be LB in Rd 1 and 2

  22. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

    Piggy,
I’m pointing it out to give your analysis a little balance from the other side. Your premise is clear, but the truth is, it’s a huge contract, and it’s going to be a topic of discussion every year because of it’s sheer size. I don’t know if this is the largest contract ever, but it’s the largest to a defensive player, and there’s dangers that come along with that.

I actually think a lot of what you say makes sense. and I’m starting to lose my ability around here to offer even a slightly different perspective without people thinking I’m outright picking a fight, but I’m not.

I’m merely discussing a side of the contract that you didn’t address. it affects every salary in the NFL. Minimums go up, tag numbers go up, free agent demands go up, and players under contract look at these contracts as litmus tests, invariably leading to holdouts and contract disputes. It’s not just a phenomenon that you can use to offset a single contract and everything fits neat and tidy.

Replying to your next post to me on the topic:

if you want to know which team is the most fucked when a player gets hurt, look at the team that most recently signed a blockbuster deal. That’s us. Outside of the QB position, there isn’t another player in the league who would fuck over his team’s cap situation with an injury more than Suh would. This is a HUGE deal, and it’s a HUGE risk. I’ve got behind it because it also offers a HUGE potential reward, so I sit back and hope for that.

    Mike E,
I knew you were joking, and I know you didn’t want to sign him. I’m just superstitious like that. Don’t like inviting bad luck..even though I know that’s totally irrational. 🙂

It’s fun and all but Ireland has nothing to do with the Saints moves.

  26. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

    D,
I don’t know if you’ve seen every game, but I did, but it’s not a cockmeasuring match. My last post was about where he was mocked, I never said I knew more about him than you did. I do, clearly, know more about Mariota than many people here, but there are a few people I’d never doubt because I know they’re college football junkies, and you are absolutely one of them.

    • D's avatar D says:

I wanst trying to throw my “cock” around lol, i was just saying im just basing it off what i have seen and it seemed from a comment about bias you might think its cause im a SEC guy and dont watch many games. When it comes to prospects ill admit i dont watch them during the year but when it comes to draft i wind up watching like i was a Pac 12 homer, or MAC guy, or Big 10 (cough, puke, sorry cant believe i just said that one).

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Honestly I’m not even sure where I said anything about your bias apologies if I did.

The only time I see SEC bias from you is when we’re talking SEC. I honestly have never seen an anti-west coast bias from you…I just say that around here for long running joke purposes.

I do think there is a general Pro-Eastern bias in sports in the US, because the bulk of the population doesn’t watch our primetime games….but that’s a different story. Don’t see it from you at all.

  27. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I didn’t want to give up a 3rd

But we can get that 3rd back
    With a trade down

And now we can afford to trade Wallace and take very little hit on the field

Stills is a better WR than Wallace really

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Last line? Really? I’m honestly asking. I don’t doubt he is more well rounded, but will DC’s actually game plan for him? I haven’t looked at Stills since he was a draft prospect…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The arrow is pointing up for Stills. He’s entering his 3rd year and he’s very fast – ran a 4.28 at the combine. I was actually impressed with him at the combine.

The 3rd just added a young WR, I have no problem with a move like that. I think that changes our view of the 1st round.

  28. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I guess we’re not going WR in early rounds. Oline or LB

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I think we still need another young WR. We have to keep the salary cap situation young and cheap over the next several years. Stills has to be close to becoming a FA doesn’t he? Gotta go do my homework on him I guess…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

BPA that isn’t a QB or a DT I would guess.

    • D's avatar D says:

We still need the big guy, and i still think the target is Parker. I think it really depends on who is there at 14 what we do, but i think if Parker’s there, thats who we take and if he isnt we likely trade back and maybe take Kendricks or an OL. May also trade completely out of the first and really rack up in the second. It does limit the chances we draft two WR’s. Parker so far is the only WR we have brought in for private workout. Thats not to be ignored, nor is the fact he is the only WR we have interviewed twice.

  29. drg's avatar drg says:

    Jahn,

I’m with you on the Suh contract. I don’t think that a player at any position other than QB can have a big enough impact on win shares to validate that type of money. That said, I’m pretty confident that Suh will remain an elite DL for the next 4-5 years. I feel better about paying him that kind of money than throwing it at unproven, average guys like Ellerbe, Wheeler, etc. He’s not a one year wonder, injury risk, or project. Like Son pointed out, he’s special. Let’s just pray he stays healthy and is a leader for the team on/off the field.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Agreed, although I’m open minded that one player MIGHT just change the Wins enough to justify it….I just haven’t seen that happen outside of the QB position. Maybe Buffalo would’ve been a 3 win team without Williams though? Who knows…

  30. D's avatar D says:

Jahn Stills will be a FA after 2016 season.

  31. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Sweet, now we can definitely address oline, LB or DB early in the draft!

  32. drg's avatar drg says:

Stills has 2 years left on his rookie deal. Having 4 years on a 3rd round pick would have been nice, but that’s an unknown and Stills is a proven talent. I like the deal.

  33. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

and we free up cap room. Hcikenbaum straight balling.

  34. D's avatar D says:

Still is a lot like Dorsett Jahn, thats probably best comparison.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Ok, well I really like Dorsett, so that’s nice. I still don’t rule out taking one in the first if Parker, Cooper or White falls to us….though I heard a GM on NFL Radio yesterday say he thought all 3 of those would be off the board by the time the Jets are done picking at 11.

  35. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

  36. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

D, I was thinking the same about Parker…. Landry, Stills, Parker, Cameron, …. maybe we keep Wallace…. Landry the slowest guy? lol

  37. drg's avatar drg says:

    Jahn,

If he’s a +2 win share player than the signing was a slam dunk. Not one team in the league that wouldn’t do that. I still think the majority of it rides on Tannehill.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

For sure. If tannehill can get us 1 more win somehow, and Suh gets us 2 more, we’re going to challenge for the division. To be honest, I just want 1 more win from Suh…and I want it to come vs. the Patriots. 🙂

Lol..no worries. I mostly verbalize (type out) this stuff to organize my own thoughts. I’m trying to be eyes wide open about this signing….hope for the best but prepare for the worst kind of thing.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Absolutely. Gotta be fair to the whole thing. I realize there are risks (obviously), but I readily admit there are compelling arguments that make this a desirable thing- HE’S FRICKIN’ SUH! You don’t get the chance to get a beast like this in his prime often, so you have to love the willingness of the FO to “put it on the table” and go after a guy with his ability.

  45. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Dolphins acquired WR Kenny Stills from the Saints in exchange for LB Dannell Ellerbe and a 2015 third-round pick.
We’re not sure what the Saints are thinking here. Stills is a soon-to-be 23-year-old playmaker with two years left on his contract at minimum salary. It’s a great get for the Dolphins, who were going to cut Ellerbe and his inflated salary anyway. Stills isn’t just a deep threat, either; he was fourth in the league among receivers with his 78.8 percent catch rate last season.

Like that he’s not even 23 yet, is ‘Still’ developing his NFL game. ‘Still’ has 2 years left on his rookie contract. He averaged 20.0 yards per catch in 2013 as a rookie, then 14.8 yds last year.
That 78.8% catch rate is HUGE! Means he gets open too.
Him & Landry will be the good hands people that Tanny can count on.

    Go Phins!

They could heavily load year 2 of the deal such that it would make it really really hard for the fins to match the contract without handcuffing themselves next offseason. If they really want him that’s how I’d structure it. You can’t prevent the fins from matching by doing that, but you can get them to think long and hard about whether it’s a good idea.

I really like some of these moves being made

    or both (who cares)
but we seem to be serious about dumping non production
    replacing w/ solid talent
and living inside what at first appeared to be an ugly cap situation

    Had heard where Tannenbuam said
“100% we go best available regardless of position need” (draft)
    gotta like that !!!

    • D's avatar D says:

Hickey’s first FA without Tannebaum wasnt bad. Smith didnt work out, but Albert did, Mitchell did, Starks resign wasn’t bad, even though he definitely showed decline last year. Finnegan and Delmas were decent when they played. Biggest problem we had with last years FA group was that we picked up too many old and busted, but we didnt sign them to long term contracts so we also didnt get left holding a bag. This years moves seem more bold, and they seem to require some finesse and i think thats Tannebaum’s experience showing its influence. I really think its a little both but Hickey showed he is not bad on his own.

Oh wow, that’s the 3rd time I wrote that and I’m wrong! Apologies! It DOES save us 5M in cap spaces (5.65M for Ellerbe, minus the 633k for Stills).

Please note all, this post corrects earlier inaccurate posts by me on the Ellerbe Deal!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was talking about Ellerbe’s savings, I understand we have to pay Stills.

Where do you come up with $4.2?

  58. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I loved Kenny Stills the year he was drafted; wanted Miami to get him.
I think he was injured leading up to the draft which caused him to slide somewhat but his college career was fun to watch. The game vs FSU @ FSU sold me on him as a WR for the NFL. He can play with contact.

Now, I think 3rd RD is buying a little on the high side but the team right now is built to run for it now so I can understand the move. Fins are going all in now even if there are a few holes left.
How much change is actually needed? Well, these games Miami loses usually come down to just 5 plays where if executed would likely result in a win so adding some of these guys here and there should have a big impact (assuming health across the board).

  59. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

so basically ireland is finally working for the fins

  60. D's avatar D says:

We save 5.65 on Ellerbe with the trade. Over the cap has a calculator and i put in trade under ellerbe and our cap hit is same as it is if we outright cut him.

  61. D's avatar D says:

Sing Clay and trade or cut Wallace!

  62. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Tim,
Ah, yea, I was getting ahead of myself. I didn’t bother considering Ellerbe’s base salary or roster bonus money because I was pretty confident the Fins were going to cut him regardless (same cap hit, traded or cut).

  63. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

ssooooooooo trading ellerbe means N.O. has to take all his cap hit.

can someone ask Al if that is correct

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

What am I chopped liver? No. We eat the dead cap hit, they only pay his salary from here on out. The prorated signing bonus will not factor into the Saints cap.

  64. D's avatar D says:

Id go right back to the pool with Saint and offer Wallace for Colston. Colston is a good RZ guy. Then we draft a younger one and BOOM.

Al, I think a 3rd for Still’s production and to get some cap back for Ellerbe is very fair. As you’ve pointed out in the past, we suck with 3rd round picks anyway. LOL

sooooo, you are saying the saints eat all his 2014 and 155 cap hit and the fins get a roll forward credit of his signing bonus of the games he didnt play cause of injury and his new team has to pick up the injured cap hit cause he is on that team now.

Al? is this correct, i think jahn is full of shit.
