Welcome to Miami Mr. Suh

By John D (son of a son of a shula)

Ndamukong Suh has signed his 6 year – 100 million dollar contract with the Miami Dolphins.  Now what?

Now it’s time to go to work. Time for him to get acclimated with his new surroundings, his new coaches, his new teammates, and his new fan base. This is a man who is driven to be great, while he did sign the largest contract ever for a defensive player in the NFL he won’t settle and collect his fat checks. Suh wants to be great, he puts the time in preparing himself, studying, honing, and working out doing everything you would expect from a true professional playing in the National Football League.

Now it’s time to go to work on changing the Dolphins fortunes on the field. End the late season collapse. End years of mediocrity. End years of frustration. Restore vigor and hope once again into a proud franchise. Can Suh do that? He can’t do it alone but in his presence everyone can get better, everyone can strive for more, everyone must do more.  Suh is a huge cornerstone to build on; he won’t waver, shy away, or settle he is here to lead and to win.

I first became familiar with Suh when he was playing in the 2009 Holiday Bowl. Nebraska vs Arizona. I watched in amazement at how Suh would just move his man out of the way and make a tackle. It was like he’d let them block him until he decided he wanted to make a tackle and he just threw the guy away and blew up the play. I can’t recall having seen anything like it since seeing Reggie White play ball. The only other player in my lifetime who was just as ferocious besides White was Deacon Jones. That’s elite company for Suh if you are scoring at home.

WHITE PEETE

Of course there have been many, many great defensive linemen that have played over the last fifty years. However there have only been those  three that have stood out in such a profound way to me. They all play with a meanness that frankly is scary. They all have unimaginable power, the ability to use leverage as if it was an innate sense and unbelievable quickness for men their size. Now I know Deacon Jones and Reggie White  played Defensive End and Suh plays Defensive Tackle but Suh plays every bit like Jones and White.

130604111417-deacon-jones-johnny-unitas-tim10-single-image-cut

If I were to round my top Defensive front players into a Mount Rushmore the player to add would be Mean Joe Greene. He’s tossed a few linemen around as well.

Green – White – Suh – Jones

MtRushmoreof the DL

Now that’s elite company.

For you older Dolphin fans the player most like Suh from our past would be Manny Fernandez. Fernandez was relentless, fierce and crazy. He never got the national recognition that a lot of other players around the league  did, I guess when you play on the “No-name Defense” that tends to happen. Manny played with rage and was very difficult to block he piled up tackles on that defense and was a large part of the success of the 72 and 73 Dolphins.

SBJ200209232401-01

Suh caught my attention at the 09 Holiday Bowl and although I was late to arrive I immediately knew what I was looking at. We had the 12th pick in the 2010 draft and I would blog incessantly on how we should “pay the freight” and move up to get him. I recall one blogger asking what style of D we would play since Suh is not a Nose Tackle and we were a 3-4 defense and I remember answering “whichever style Suh wants”. Of course we didn’t trade up, we traded back in fact. After 5 years of no playoffs and struggling to be a .500 team perhaps I was right those five years ago.

Alas, Suh has found his way to Miami where we can all relish and enjoy what this great player has in store for us. This is no ordinary free agent signing. We didn’t just sign an average to above average NFL player here, we got a bonafide Star and great player in Suh. Be grateful Dolphan, rejoice! And be happy.

Suh is here for You!

Lol, honestly the team has surprised me with every move they’ve made this offseason. I wouldn’t be surprised if we keep or cut Wallace. I’m just enjoying the ride right now.

Now I’m being told there were questions about Kenny Stills’s work habits. Apparently enjoys the nightlife. No worries in Miami.

Would be stupid to cut Wallace this year. We are in the cheapest part of his contract, now less than the Maclin deal KC paid, as well as the franchise tag numbers for Demaryius & Dez, etc…SMH. Plus he said he’s now open to restructure.

  11. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Saints released CB Corey White.
White lost his starting corner spot to Terrance Frederick late last season and only played sporadically after that. He’s inconsistent, but some team is likely to take a chance on White because of his versatility. In addition to playing outside corner, White has also spent time at nickel back and safety.

The Saints may have to release RG Jahri Evans to make cap space for C.J. Spiller.

As we’ve seen with Friday’s Kenny Stills trade, Drew Brees and Brandin Cooks are the only players on the roster viewed as untouchable. Evans carries a $6.8 million base salary in 2015 and has been rumored as a cut candidate since the start of free agency.

Heard this a little while back but i thought a lot of the moves they were doing were to find a way to keep him. Administration there have really tried working with him to have him restructure, and the fanbase and pundits think he is a guy they should strive to keep. Hopefully it just a business decision that has to happen, but i dunno if id hold my breath. Maybe we should offer Wallace in trade for him lol.

  36. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Don’t know what to make of the Wallace rumors at this point.

If the Fins don’t want Wallace, what would be the benefit to leaking info about a possible restructuring. Doesn’t make much sense strategy wise for either side (Fins FO or Wallace’s agent).

If the two sides are really discussing a restructuring, then the Fins FO doesn’t want to send him off.

Wallace’s agent & the Fins front office disagree on what the market value is for the player of course.

Mike’s agent believes his player can get X value elsewhere and Fins front office probably disagree and have their own value.

Fins obviously need a backup plan and Stills acquisition gives them some leverage.

    • D's avatar D says:

Maybe if they show him willing to restructure the new teams think that he would do that once traded. It never said the Phins were asking him, it was him saying he was open to it, and you have to remember he said “if it wasnt something crazy” so it had to be what he was willing to do, and likely that wasnt going include more than they would get just by cutting him.

    • D's avatar D says:

Al man, its more than plausible and its got real merit to being a valuable option. A lot of people were let go by team this off season because they saved the team 2.5-3mil, and thats pretty much what he’s worth. He alienated the coach, many teammates and in general set himself many times about team. Its not hard to think that trading him or cutting him would be an option.

    D,

If a trade does happen and Wallace restructures, it usually follows after a deal in place with receiving team and the leak would come from the team looking to acquiring him with player’s agent.
Agents don’t care for the team (or their problems), they only care about their commissions and clients 🙂
Agent can negotiate freely with any team if his client is a FA (via being cut). No way would they bother helping a team out (draft picks etc).

We definitely could use this year with light injuries to make up for last year. Have to admit though, we did sign a bunch of guys with injury histories, we gambled on them and crapped out. Salguero reports Wallace has been on the phone with the Vikings for over an hour. After acquiring Kenny Stills earlier Friday, the Dolphins placed Wallace on the trade block for at least the second time this offseason. This time it appears they have found a taker. The Vikings are in need of playmakers around second-year QB Teddy Bridgewater, and Wallace would be a great fit in OC Norv Turner’s downfield passing attack. With 2014 revelation Charles Johnson opposite Wallace and Greg Jennings manning the slot, Bridgewater will be surrounded by a much-improved arsenal in 2015.

Does free up a lil more room for Clay, and a lil wiggle room for a FA OG to come in and compete….IMO.

I will not be surprised if Wallace does well in Minnesota. Their offense seems to be a better fit, and Bridgewater is good long ball thrower.
