Welcome to Miami Mr. Suh

By John D (son of a son of a shula)

Ndamukong Suh has signed his 6 year – 100 million dollar contract with the Miami Dolphins.  Now what?

Now it’s time to go to work. Time for him to get acclimated with his new surroundings, his new coaches, his new teammates, and his new fan base. This is a man who is driven to be great, while he did sign the largest contract ever for a defensive player in the NFL he won’t settle and collect his fat checks. Suh wants to be great, he puts the time in preparing himself, studying, honing, and working out doing everything you would expect from a true professional playing in the National Football League.

Now it’s time to go to work on changing the Dolphins fortunes on the field. End the late season collapse. End years of mediocrity. End years of frustration. Restore vigor and hope once again into a proud franchise. Can Suh do that? He can’t do it alone but in his presence everyone can get better, everyone can strive for more, everyone must do more.  Suh is a huge cornerstone to build on; he won’t waver, shy away, or settle he is here to lead and to win.

I first became familiar with Suh when he was playing in the 2009 Holiday Bowl. Nebraska vs Arizona. I watched in amazement at how Suh would just move his man out of the way and make a tackle. It was like he’d let them block him until he decided he wanted to make a tackle and he just threw the guy away and blew up the play. I can’t recall having seen anything like it since seeing Reggie White play ball. The only other player in my lifetime who was just as ferocious besides White was Deacon Jones. That’s elite company for Suh if you are scoring at home.

WHITE PEETE

Of course there have been many, many great defensive linemen that have played over the last fifty years. However there have only been those  three that have stood out in such a profound way to me. They all play with a meanness that frankly is scary. They all have unimaginable power, the ability to use leverage as if it was an innate sense and unbelievable quickness for men their size. Now I know Deacon Jones and Reggie White  played Defensive End and Suh plays Defensive Tackle but Suh plays every bit like Jones and White.

130604111417-deacon-jones-johnny-unitas-tim10-single-image-cut

If I were to round my top Defensive front players into a Mount Rushmore the player to add would be Mean Joe Greene. He’s tossed a few linemen around as well.

Green – White – Suh – Jones

MtRushmoreof the DL

Now that’s elite company.

For you older Dolphin fans the player most like Suh from our past would be Manny Fernandez. Fernandez was relentless, fierce and crazy. He never got the national recognition that a lot of other players around the league  did, I guess when you play on the “No-name Defense” that tends to happen. Manny played with rage and was very difficult to block he piled up tackles on that defense and was a large part of the success of the 72 and 73 Dolphins.

SBJ200209232401-01

Suh caught my attention at the 09 Holiday Bowl and although I was late to arrive I immediately knew what I was looking at. We had the 12th pick in the 2010 draft and I would blog incessantly on how we should “pay the freight” and move up to get him. I recall one blogger asking what style of D we would play since Suh is not a Nose Tackle and we were a 3-4 defense and I remember answering “whichever style Suh wants”. Of course we didn’t trade up, we traded back in fact. After 5 years of no playoffs and struggling to be a .500 team perhaps I was right those five years ago.

Alas, Suh has found his way to Miami where we can all relish and enjoy what this great player has in store for us. This is no ordinary free agent signing. We didn’t just sign an average to above average NFL player here, we got a bonafide Star and great player in Suh. Be grateful Dolphan, rejoice! And be happy.

Suh is here for You!

WR room right now is really young

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I absolutely love what we’ve done. Everyone’s worried how we’re going to pay Suh and probably Clay now, you just got the answer.

  3. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Boulder, I’m thinking Justin Blalock, the longtime LG of the Falcons. He’s still available.
    31yo, 6’4 326

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Now we can sign Clay and a guard and go draft. Wow! This was pulled off beautifully if we finish it.

  5. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Don’t call it a rebuild!!!
Quite the face lift, boob job, & tummy tuck for this Dolphins team. 🙂

I will not be surprised if Wallace does well in Minnesota. Their offense seems to be a better fit, and Bridgewater is good long ball thrower.
    ————
He probably will do well there.
I hope he gets gang tackled and suffers a broken leg while he watches a disgruntled team member walk off the field right next to him.

  7. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I will say that my thinking has completely changed since the end of the season and Im really glad Tannenbaum is running the show. Didn’t think I’d ever say that but we went from a team with lots of needs, a very expensive WR with issues, and a very bad run D to a team with lots of really dynamic play-makers suddenly on it and we aren’t even finished yet. Bring in Clay and some competition in several areas of need…and this FA period is a huge success. Hell, it’s already a huge success. I’m super stoked and the draft isn’t even here yet!

  8. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

so does trading wallace give us some cap space? I know cutting didn’t. Unless post june

I also love that Omar is butt hurt again.

  12. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

if get clay we’d have really expensive TEs and really cheap WRs 🙂

  13. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I forgot our 7th was a SF 7th. So, it’s not even a very strong 7th we gave away. Glad to see the moves we’ve done but time to get Clay back in the fold. $15 mill should get a few really solid pieces too. Another good FA day.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

SF’s 7th was middle of the road, they had a bad year.

Instead of a 7 we have two 5s which can be used to trade up. That deal solidified the Suh signing and opened the door for a Tannehill extension next year.

Our organization has done exceptionally well in FA and is opening up the draft for us.

      Oh yeah, sign Clay!

  14. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I also get the feeling Matthews was trying to fit into the click of Wallace & Grimes the last 2yrs by recent tweets of his and seems like he had recently tried to remove himself from it. He genuinely seems like he’s now worried about being a pro opposed to being something others tried to make him.

  15. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

So Minnesota gave us the first pick in the fifth round- is that right?

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Boulder, no more acorns. We look for steak and lobster and save money. 🙂

  17. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

If new orleans has to cut Evans… we should be able to offer a competitive contract!!! Our o-line would be 80% studs and hide the next best guy at RG

  18. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    @ArmandoSalguero
One more thing I’m hearing on Mike Wallace traded to Minny: No, he’s not thrilled by it.

I feel for the guy but him and Tannehill did not mix well. Stills maybe can.

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We didn’t get much for Wallace, but we got him for $$

  20. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Wallace for a 5th is good for both teams. Both teams have different goals in this trade and those goals happened to overlap.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I knew we weren’t getting good compensation. I’m OK with the 5 and 7. Better than nothing.

  22. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

New Age… Wallace chose Miami over Minny (despite Minny offering more money)… so we trade him to Minny to say F.U. for not being a pro until the last game is over. 🙂

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yeah, he was a whiny B, but I liked the guy well enough. His issues with Tanny were my problem and now Stills can help correct that. I like the thought of us being more mid ranged where Tanny is super effective.

    • D's avatar D says:

Maybe we pick up Jennings on the cheap once they cut him lol. Change things back to how they should have been. Kidding I want to draft.

  23. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

One more thing I’m hearing on Mike Wallace traded to Minny: No, he’s not thrilled by it.

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So we have a 1,2,4, two 5’s and a 6. Won’t be shocked if we trade back, but I still think we should stay where we are and get top talent, still even trade up to get a special player

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I still hope for one of the top 3 WRs but am on board with your Collins crush now. 😉

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

La’el? I think disposing of Mike makes it more likely we go WR, but if La’el is there, he’d be a heckuva pick. He’d probably start the season at either LT or RT but then you move him inside when Albert is healthy.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we may trade up and keep adding upgrades instead of developmental types.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Mike E, instead of 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, we now have 1, 2, 4, 5a., 5b., 6.

Remember, it was that or releasing him which was going to happen. He was done here in Miami. You don’t keep quitters on your team especially at a high cost.

  26. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    LOL @ New Age

  27. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley
If the Dolphins can keep Clay, they will have essentially swapped Wallace, Hartline and Gibson for Cameron, Stills and cap space.

  28. D's avatar D says:

I wanted maybe a replacement 3rd but I’ll take it over nothing. I was sure we would let him go one way or the other. Only the possibility of losing Clay ever really made me sway on that feeling.

  29. D's avatar D says:

    Parker guys …Parker

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Huge Parker fan. Even bigger White fan but he’s just not going to be there. Would love someone like that as the cherry on top for Tanny.

      • D's avatar D says:

White likely won’t but I think Parker will. I have been checking other fan boards and rumors and mock drafts of all teams in front of us and I only ever find 2 teams with serious need or interest at wr. Even if a third trades up its more likely DGB would be the target due to his speed and height. 9ers are said to covet him and they are only ones I think would trade up past us.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I hope you are right D. That kid is special.

  30. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Clay is back in South Florida. I imagine a lot of this was to bring back this productive, humble, high character guy. Just do it!

  31. D's avatar D says:

Minnesota was the big competition for Parker. Now the have their guy and we can have ours. Considering jets got Marshall and Minny has Wallace really only Raiders or someone trading up stands between us and a choice of any of the We and at least a shot at one of the top three.

IS EVERYONE happy with the way we’ve addressed our needs so far?? I most assuredly AM NOT HAPPY with the current status of our O-Line. Just a quick late night drive by. Been busy as sin. However, I am liking our moves of late. I love Stills. Ascending player with great speed, great deep threat. Ditching Wallace, not a problem if what I think we will now do is make sure we re-sign Clay. Match Clay with Cameron for lots of 2 TE looks, have Stills and Landry and I suspect we will go WR early also in the draft. I like it a lot.

  72. D's avatar D says:

This has been an awesome FA week. If I had to bitch it would be being down a 3rd but I really think we got an awesome receiver for it. Wallace was not a fit, he was self centered, no team first nerve in his body. I’m not impressed with his 10 TD’s because I think had he not been there, someone makes the just as well. Just because he made them doesn’t mean he was the only one getting open. Tanny likely had alternate TD options on those same plays. I appreciate him attempting to alter his game to fit in our offense but he hated every minute of it and unfortunately let that displeasure spill over to Hus commitment to the team. We will get past it, we will be fine, so g’luck to you Mike Wallace, maybe grass will be greener for you there, but ya might wanna try not alienating them if you happen to give up some targets.

  73. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Well I go to sleep one hour early yesterday 7pm and I miss the wallace trade. Wow I missed almost all of FA except Suh.
I was thinking we could use 3 te formations with cameron as a te/wr. Have him split out to create a mismatch or move him in for blocking. We don’t need as many wr’s with this formation. clay/sims and cameron would give us mismatches better than NE’s with grok and hernandez on field at same time several years ago. NO Saints used it’s former TE and 2 te sets similarly to create mismatches.

  74. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I hate giving up draft picks; I wish we would have given up a 4th instead of a 3rd for Stills. If none of the big three WR’s are there when we pick at 14, I would like to see us trade down a little (early 20’s) and grab Gurley. I don’t think that he makes it past the Cowboys or the Patriots in the late first round. He’s going to be a special player in this league IMO, and he would be absolutely lethal on this team.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

      I don’t know Bryan,
I thought about that yesterday, but something tells me Dallas is trying to win now and needs defense more than offense. They also seem to think their o line makes their runners, not the other way around, so they can wait on a back that falls to them, particularly one that is healthy.. but I also see your side of the coin.

  75. Ken's avatar Ken says:

The loss of the 3rd for Stills is fine. Odds are one of the big 3 WRs will be there at 14. We know 2 QBs will be taken, 5 DEs will be taken, 2 DTs will be taken and likely at leas 2 OTs will be taken in the top 14, that makes 11 without a WR or a CB yet mentioned.

This has definitely been the strangest FA period I’ve ever seen. A LOT of head scratching trades. Still don’t get the Bradford trade. If he can’t stay healthy, which has been the case almost every year, it was just an awful trade. The Cowboys let DeMarco Murray go and get Darren McFadden. Really?

they are betting murray was a hit because of it’s OL which is pretty good. I think they could put anyone behind that line and they could be a 1000 yrd back.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

McFadden has never had more than 225 carries, and most years, he can’t stay on the field. Murray had 392 carries last season

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

with a good OL the back doesn’t get hit as much in the trenches.

I’m not sure where Gurley is health wise. Will he be ready to play this season, from the start?

  80. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I actually agree that the O-line is so good anyone can get a 1000 yards, but why get a vet back who can’t stay on the field?

  81. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

This is what I believe the team is trying to do with the 3 TE’s.
    http://www.wthr.com/story/26621469/2014/09/24/colts-using-all-3-tight-ends-in-afcs-top-offense
This is similar to J.Gramn when he was in NO, and the NE Patriots with a 2TE set with gronk and hernandez. The mismatches would create many and the need for expensive WR’s won’t exist until later in draft or not at all.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The Colts have TY Hilton, and they just picked up Andre Johnson

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

what do you think if I’m right about this 3 TE formation do you think the fins will bypass WR until later in draft and draft a OL- guard in first or defense gem to develop like a CB.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I think they can pick up a old veteran who will help our young receivers learn the NFL game and then draft a wr or two in the 6th or 7 round. We can address the OL or we can go for greatness and trade up for DE/OLB. Wake has 1 or 2 seasons left. I would love Dante Fowler Jr., OLB in a trade up to get him.
STRENGTHS: Values lies with his versatility. Depending on the situation the Gators line him up at RDE, LDE, DT, and OLB, ask him to rush from the two-point and three-point stance and occasionally drop him into coverage — including after he has started the play with his hand in the dirt. Lined up primarily in the “BUCK” linebacker spot in 2014, and is best suited for a 3-4 base defense at the next level where he can disrupt the edge with his aggressive hands and explosive lower body.
This is exactly what coyle said he wanted in his LB’s for the draft when Ireland explained his pick of D Jordan.

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think WR will be a priority for us. Doesn’t mean it will have to be our 1st pick, but I think if not the 1st RD then the 2nd RD.

  83. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not sure either. It depends on what they think of Turner and Thomas, and if we need to and can upgrade in this draft. Stills played in the slot mostly with the Saints, and in a standard pro set, you have 2 WR’s and a TE and a FB/H-back, or 2 TE’s, or 3 WR’s. I think Landry is best in the slot, so we need to get a WR who can play outisde.

  84. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

MikeE, to give an idea of the Murray vs O-line ‘debate’… Murray had over 1,000 yards BEFORE contact. wow.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s crazy. He does hit the hole quickly, so part of that credit goes to him too. On the other hand, I don’t buy that getting tackled behind the LOS hurts any more than past it. Getting tackled is getting tackled. You get hit, you hit the turf either way.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

what’s crazy is their last couple of drafts they have gone with OL in first. I do like this thinking and I think we still need a guard

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have no problem if we go O-line with our first pick. I’ve said many times I’d love La’el Collins. He’s big, athletic, and play with a nasty disposition, and he’s like 6’5″ 310. He can also play T, and might be the best true LT prospect in this draft. There’s also Laken Tomlinson, Cameron Erving or Ali Marpet.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I really don’t want to go Oline at #14, but seeing what it did for Dallas last yr, but if we could get a good one like Martin I’d be ok with it.

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Scherff goes top 10 for sure, but I’d gladly take him if he was still around at #14

  87. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I hope Fins have Jahri Evans’ agent on speed dial…
then: its a matter of deciding if the “drop off” from 1st rd to 2nd rd is greatest in WR or LB.
My gut tells me that WR in 1st and LB in 2nd is best scenario for TWO locks to start. Parker and Perryman I think gives us two playmakers (and both are realistic gets in those rounds)

  88. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I was pissed when I first learned of the Wallace trade, but in my insomniac office I realized he had to be traded, and it had nothing to do with his stunt in week 17. It’s simple math, his production didn’t match his salary and he couldn’t get on the same page as RT. He had good numbers, the TDs last yr were more than was expected of him, but not getting 1,000 yrds in either season, after Hartline did it twice, and only finishing 37th in the league in yards was not good.

Can Stills be a number 1 WR, who cares, as stated before this O doesn’t really need a number 1 WR. Stills does have much better hands too, and his route running can’t be wores. Stills had 931 yards 63 rec on 85 targets, but only 3 TDs, compared to Wallace’s 67 115 862.

Sure we’ll lose a few TDs, but Stills did have 5 TDs his rookie yr on 32 rec, and we now have a true redzone threat in Cameron, so we should be more productive in the redzone.

Now, what do we do about a complimentary WR? It seems easy really to get one in the draft, seeing how well the WRs have been doing lately in their rookie seasons, and Piggy and others already seem to have it covered 🙂

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

our new FO seems to be emphasizing (as they should in this offense) ROUTE running. That takes discipline and separation skills as well. Tannehill has finally got rid of the “Aggie Stink” (my wife went to UTexas)… lol… but in all honesty he isn’t a ‘natural’ when it comes to accuracy. Tannehill has great intangibles, and the FO is gonna build an offense specifically for his strengths (and weaknesses).

Chris Landry on NBC Radio said:
Suh was a good get, but he is converted about their ability to put quality around him in light of his contract; Detroit was a better team than Miami is (implying even with Suh now in Miami); Miami is not ready to compete for the AFC East because of the need on the oline and at receiver; if they keep Clay, their offense is going to be better with Cameron.

  90. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    mike,
I can tell you how I feel about turner and thomas. I don’t think either is prime time ready. I’m who can for sure say those guys are starter material. We still have to address the guard position IMO. Possibly 2 new guards should be added for competition IMO

  91. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I have to admit even though I’m not a fan of taking OL in the 1st Scherff would be a good pick

I would prefer we go WR and LB early though

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m ok with not going LB early, between Jenkins, Misi, Jordan, Tripp, and someone that isn’t on the roster yet we’ll be ok. My top needs are WR, G, S, then LB in that order. I think they still have a plan for safety that doesn’t include the draft, Delmas, someone already on the team (Thomas), or an FA.

However, I will say this…..there has to be some appeal to Dwayne Bowe to come home and resurrect his career with the Dolphins.

  93. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – Because he didn’t see the field. lol

  94. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Davante Parker: I think he fits the way Tanny plays. We really need a WR who can “go up and get the ball in traffic or on 50/50s”… Tanny downfield can get the ball in the ‘area’ and let Parker go get it. Of the top three WRs (Cooper, White, Parker), Parker fits this role the best. I see Cooper and White as Jarvis Landry’s on steroids LOL. AJ Green almost single handedly got Andy Dalton a big check. 🙂

  95. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    piggy,
did thomas play guard at all last year? I thought he only played RT.

  96. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  98. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

regarding Billy Turner: I think we Dolphin fans are still getting used to the idea that our coaching staff really does believe in player development. Get a team in place… then coach/develop draft picks (which is what 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounders often need). I still think Dion Jordan is being groomed to replace Wake (33 yrs old and the grandpa of this team)… Turner was an athletic specimen that bullied in D2 (or was it D3) but needs a couple years of ‘college coaching’

  99. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Tannehill is, imo, in the 10-12 range for QBs. He can’t get the ball to guys like the top tier QBs. That’s ok. So our scheme is supposed to be different. More than anything, Wallace needs to be on a team that can “get him the ball” … I think this is the subtlety that Ireland missed. Our new FO, so far, seems to have a better feel for what kind of receiver Tanny needs (physically and in tempermant).

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Tanny is becoming so accurate that I would be able to catch his passes. I just watched the denver game again last night. He played really well in that game. Only if we could have stopped their run.

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Accurate within a certain range…. 30 yards downfield I’d like to have Parker going up for the 50/50 rather than Wallace. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bitching about Tanny… just being realistic that he can’t ‘drop it in’ deep like a Brees, Manning, Brady, or Rivers. Our downfield game will need to be more like what Dalton/Green do in Cincy. Thus my support for picking Parker.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He really has improved his accuracy, but I think you’re going to far, I’m going to watch some Denver highlights.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Did you have the Denver game on tape? I can’t seem to find anything good on Youtube.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And doesn’t seem to keep players (current FO), that have worn out their welcome either by attitude or play, to make their own track record look better. In other words it’s all about winning now.

We’re going QUALITY in this draft, not quantity. I’d rather get 3 serious impact players than 5 or 6 could be’s.
    ——————-

This is the way I see it too. The last team I remember doing that was the jets the yr they traded up to get Revis, I believe they only had a few choices that yr, trading up more than once and getting the quality, they soon made back to back AFC title games.
