Last Thursday, the Dolphins signed quarterback Josh Freeman making the Dolphins the 4th team Freeman has signed with since being drafted in 2009.
So who is Josh Freeman?
Before Josh Freeman became an NFL quarterback, Freeman started 35 games for the Kansas State Wildcats. In his three year career at Kansas State, Freeman threw for over 8,000 yards and 44 TDs. But he wasn’t just an arial threat as a Wildcat. Freeman ran for 20 TDs while in college.
Although Freeman had one year of eligibility left, he left Kansas State to enter the 2009 draft. Tampa selected him in the first round of the 2009 draft with the 17th overall selection.
Like most rookies, Freeman didn’t start right away. But when the Buccaneers finally started him, he helped them end an 11 game losing streak. Freeman won the first game he started. Overall though, 2009 wasn’t a great year for Freeman. Also like most rookies – he struggled. Freeman started 9 games in 2009, throwing 10 TDs.
His TD/Interception ratio was somewhat dubious, throwing 18 interceptions. Yuk!
But those bad times would turn around very quickly. In 2010 Josh Freeman became “the Next Great Quarterback” He lead the Buccaneers to a 10 win season. His stats in 2010 were rather awe inspiring. His interceptions were reduced from 18 to 6 in just one season. His TDs increased from 10 to 25. He threw for over 3400 yards and ran for almost 200 yards. The Buccaneers found their foundation. A Quarterback they can build around. Right? From here on out the Bucs are a contender! They can’t lose with Josh Freeman at the helm.
Then 2010 ended.
2011 wasn’t as kind to Josh Freeman. The Buccaneers finished the 2011 season with a 4-12 record. Freeman threw 22 interceptions and only 16 TDs. 2012 proved to be a little bit better. Freeman threw more TDs than ever with 27 but he also threw 17 interceptions.
The Buccaneers finished 2012 with a 7-9 record and they fired their head coach (at the time Raheem Morris) The honeymoon was officially over.
In 2013 Freeman became public enemy #1 in Tampa. Freeman became unpopular among teammates. They refused to name him team captain. He missed the team photo. The Buccaneers were done with Freeman. They tried to trade him and no one else wanted him. So on October 3, 2013 the Buccaneers released him
Time for a fresh start in Minnesota. The Vikings signed Freeman 3 days after the Bucs released him. Freeman competed for the starting job with Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel. Freeman started 1 game for the Vikings in 2013. The Vikings lost that one game. Freeman didn’t throw a TD in his time with Minnesota.
Although its not mentioned much, Freeman signed with the Giants in 2014. Freeman was released from the Giants almost 6 weeks after they signed him.
And now its off to the Dolphins to compete to become second fiddle to Ryan Tannehill. Freeman should probably use his free time to write a book about how quickly NFL dreams crash and burn. But I guess if Tommy Maddux was able to salvage an NFL career there is hope for Freeman. Don’t count Matt Moore out just yet…

Freeman is a reclamation project no doubt. He’s just a name at this point so Moore us probably safe. Should be interesting seeing what her can do in a WCO concept vs the pro sets TB ran with him.

People ended up picking guys they wanted the dolphins to draft
Sherf, Collins, cooper then Parker probably not going to happen
The giants going OL makes sense
But the Vikings and Browns probably go after Gregory or Dupree or even Waynes
Those guys still on the board is surprising
This just gives you an idea on how things could go down. We don’t know who teams have high on their boards or which direction they’ll go in.
The Dolphins offered free agent WR Michael Crabtree “close to $3 million” but he turned it down, according to the Miami Herald.
Crabtree wanted something closer to $4.5 million. With so many great wideouts in this year’s draft, teams aren’t going to overpay for an underachiever like Crabtree. He’ll visit the Raiders next. If Oakland’s offer is similar to Miami’s, Crabtree would be wise to take the money

The draft is a bit off but the real one will be too. There will definitely be trades which we can’t do here. Also, teams have a much better idea of their needs(obviously) and how players look this off-season. Where is Gurley in his rehab? We have a lot worse of an idea than GMs do.
In the end, most of the guys we have drafted before pick 14…will probably be off the board in the real draft. That’s not too bad for a bunch of fans that Omar thinks are clueless homers right? 😉

Scherff might be a great OG in the NFL (and a good OT too) but the other guys might be perceived to be better OTs

I don’t see any reason to grade this draft. It’s just an exercise of what could happen. Biases are leaking in as if everyone knows it won’t be this but will be that. Go with the flow of how this has gone down. I’d rather look at this than the thousands of silly mock drafts we’ve seen. 🙂
We all contributed to this draft, so there can’t really be an agenda when 10-15 different people placed their votes, right? A fair amount of the picks weren’t the guy I chose, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a legitimate choice, or that mine was. I think we’re all pretty much on the same level of knowledge here, so this is a collaborative effort.
Agreed, I was replying to the comments that this draft is off track. There are always a few surprises in the 1st round so this one is no different and I think it has actually followed suit to the general rankings.

I kind of see Flowers like Vernon Carey. Maybe I’m wrong, and maybe he wouldn’t want to play inside because of the value a LT has, but he might be an NFL RT anyway, so it’s not unusual for a guy who plays RT to also play G. Gabe Carimi came into his own playing G, after not succeeding at T.

Ereck Flowers is 1st RD OT. I’m not sure if he could play inside or not, but Randy would probably have a better answer on that. He’s a mauler, so I can’t imagine why he couldn’t play inside, as well as outside.

What’s your thought on Ereck Flowers? Do you think he could/would play inside at G?
What i read on him.. Analysis
Flowers lined up at left tackle for the Hurricanes and has excellent height/bulk for the position. In pass pro, he has quick feet but he isn’t a great knee bender. He plays upright and he catches instead of punching in his set. He often gives up his chest and he has a hang leg versus power, which opens the gate to the quarterback. He is an excellent inline run blocker. He has knock-off power and he is athletic enough to reach/seal on the backside. Overall, I like him better at right tackle and he could develop into a solid starter in time.
What scares me in that is : opens the gate to the quarterback

Flowers is compared to Greg Robinson, who’s almost the identical size to Flowers, and Robinson played LG last season for the Rams.

Robinson was an elite prospect compared to HOFers like Orlando pace

The only reason he is mentioned in the first round is to play tackle
If he was being drafted as a guard he would be a day 2 prospect
Besides Robinson was drafted to play LT for the rams
And we would be drafting an An OL to play OG not to eventually play LT

Flowers was a part-time starter at right tackle as a true freshman in 2012 before moving to the left side in 2013 and becoming a full-time starter. Some analysts see him as a better fit on the right side; that group includes Mayock, who sees Flowers as a potential “Pro Bowl right tackle.” If This is tthe case , take him play at RT, and slide James ? Inside ?? that may be worth the pick at 14..

I want a WR too but if the big 3 are off the board I think the next group of WRs is fairly equal with real good talent amongst them. Waynes is clearly the best CB in the draft. If we can walk away at no. 14 with the best CB in the draft I think he have to take him and find your WR in round 2.
PIGGY; I voted for Waynes as soon as I saw the poll was up. This fascination with tall receivers is OK. But, at 14, Waynes, IMHO, is the best guy available at a position of NEED. DON’T want the 4th or 5th best WR over the best DB. But I’m sure many/most will disagree. –IF we take Waynes in round one that means we MUST take the BEST O-Line guy available in round 2, especially since we don’t know if ALBERT will be ready to go in week 1.
I think the choice for Mimi based on what is listed above is LB Kendricks, then hope for WR’s Perriman or DGB in the 2nd.
The other way around may not work for getting Kendricks….IMO.

I have seen him make some big plays. True he is primarily a vertical threat but Auburn’s passing game with Nick Marshall was pretty vanilla. Despite that everyone knew he was a vertical threat he still got open all the time plus he has size. I like what I have seen but I get that there is probably a learning curve with him coming from a pretty generic passing offense.
But his cohort Duke Williams did so much more than Coates in terms of diverse route running

With Coates you have to look who threw to him. Did you see Marshall throw at the combine? Everything was behind receivers and lots dropped them. They count drops off catchable passes but the don’t take into consideration what kind of contortions ya have to do to catch them or the fact the QB three it at the wrong part if your route. I think Coates us one of those guys who will be better in pros once he has a good qb throwing to him.
