Who Is Josh Freeman?

Last Thursday, the Dolphins signed quarterback Josh Freeman making the Dolphins the 4th team Freeman has signed with since being drafted in 2009.

So who is Josh Freeman?

Before Josh Freeman became an NFL quarterback, Freeman started 35 games for the Kansas State Wildcats.  In his three year career at Kansas State, Freeman threw for over 8,000 yards and 44 TDs.  But he wasn’t just an arial threat as a Wildcat.  Freeman ran for 20 TDs while in college.

Although Freeman had one year of eligibility left, he left Kansas State to enter the 2009 draft.  Tampa selected him in the first round of the 2009 draft with the 17th overall selection.

FreemanAngry

Like most rookies, Freeman didn’t start right away.  But when the Buccaneers finally started him, he helped them end an 11 game losing streak.  Freeman won the first game he started.  Overall though, 2009 wasn’t a great year for Freeman.  Also like most rookies – he struggled.  Freeman started 9 games in 2009, throwing 10 TDs.

His TD/Interception ratio was somewhat dubious, throwing 18 interceptions.  Yuk!

FreemanTDBut those bad times would turn around very quickly.  In 2010 Josh Freeman became “the Next Great Quarterback” He lead the Buccaneers to a 10 win season.  His stats in 2010 were rather awe inspiring.  His interceptions were reduced from 18 to 6 in just one season.  His TDs increased from 10 to 25.  He threw for over 3400 yards and ran for almost 200 yards.  The Buccaneers found their foundation.  A Quarterback they can build around.  Right? From here on out the Bucs are a contender!  They can’t lose with Josh Freeman at the helm.

Then 2010 ended.

2011 wasn’t as kind to Josh Freeman.  The Buccaneers finished the 2011 season with a 4-12 record.  Freeman threw 22 interceptions and only 16 TDs.  2012 proved to be a little bit better.  Freeman threw more TDs than ever with 27 but he also threw 17 interceptions.

FreemansackedThe Buccaneers finished 2012 with a 7-9 record and they fired their head coach (at the time Raheem Morris)  The honeymoon was officially over.

In 2013 Freeman became public enemy #1 in Tampa.  Freeman became unpopular among teammates.   They refused to name him team captain.  He missed the team photo.  The Buccaneers were done with Freeman.  They tried to trade him and no one else wanted him.  So on October 3, 2013 the Buccaneers released him

NFL: Carolina Panthers at Minnesota Vikings

Time for a fresh start in Minnesota.  The Vikings signed Freeman 3 days after the Bucs released him.  Freeman competed for the starting job with Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel.  Freeman started 1 game for the Vikings in 2013.  The Vikings lost that one game.  Freeman didn’t throw a TD in his time with Minnesota.

Although its not mentioned much, Freeman signed with the Giants in 2014.  Freeman was released from the Giants almost 6 weeks after they signed him.

And now its off to the Dolphins to compete to become second fiddle to Ryan Tannehill.  Freeman should probably use his free time to write a book about how quickly NFL dreams crash and burn.  But I guess if Tommy Maddux was able to salvage an NFL career there is hope for Freeman.  Don’t count Matt Moore out just yet…

Morning everyone, and have a great Easter Sunday !

Have the smoker almost up to temp
Brisket going on in a few min.
Going to be a smoke filled delicious day !

  2. Mike E. says:

    Good morning and Happy Easter!

  3. BoulderPhinfan says:

happy easter! Seems like gregory is going to the saints.

    • Mike E. says:

Absolutely. Great pick for them. It’s going to be interesting to see what our group votes for the Dolphins.

  4. son of a son of a shula says:

    Good article, who wrote it?

  5. Al in MIA says:

Freeman is a reclamation project no doubt. He’s just a name at this point so Moore us probably safe. Should be interesting seeing what her can do in a WCO concept vs the pro sets TB ran with him.

  6. Al in MIA says:

Happy Easter everyone. Always a wierd day when you think of the pagan symbolism attached to it (rabbit, eggs, etc) with it also being the most important Christian day (foundation of the faith).

  7. son of a son of a shula says:

Well it’s set up perfect for us to over-reach for Peat or Flowers guys, woo-hoo I can’t wait.

  8. son of a son of a shula says:

Cleveland just got Bowe and Hartline, I doubt they take a receiver but hey it sets us up for a lineman so yeah give them Parker.

  9. son of a son of a shula says:

  10. Tim Knight says:

    Happy Easter, folks!

  11. The Flying Pig says:

I think the draft hit derailed after the ATL pick

People ended up picking guys they wanted the dolphins to draft

Sherf, Collins, cooper then Parker probably not going to happen
The giants going OL makes sense
But the Vikings and Browns probably go after Gregory or Dupree or even Waynes
Those guys still on the board is surprising

    • Tim Knight says:

This just gives you an idea on how things could go down. We don’t know who teams have high on their boards or which direction they’ll go in.

  12. getterdone says:

The Dolphins offered free agent WR Michael Crabtree “close to $3 million” but he turned it down, according to the Miami Herald.
Crabtree wanted something closer to $4.5 million. With so many great wideouts in this year’s draft, teams aren’t going to overpay for an underachiever like Crabtree. He’ll visit the Raiders next. If Oakland’s offer is similar to Miami’s, Crabtree would be wise to take the money

  13. New Age says:

The draft is a bit off but the real one will be too. There will definitely be trades which we can’t do here. Also, teams have a much better idea of their needs(obviously) and how players look this off-season. Where is Gurley in his rehab? We have a lot worse of an idea than GMs do.

In the end, most of the guys we have drafted before pick 14…will probably be off the board in the real draft. That’s not too bad for a bunch of fans that Omar thinks are clueless homers right? 😉

  14. The Flying Pig says:

I think there is a strong likelihood Collins is off the board before Scherff

I can even see Flowers or Peat becoming one of the top 2 OL off the board pushing Collins or Scherff down

Scherff might be a great OG in the NFL (and a good OT too) but the other guys might be perceived to be better OTs

I think might would have the OL ranked
    1 Scherff
    2 Collins
    3 Peat
    4 flowers
    5 Erving

But I this there is a strong likelihood they aren’t drafted in that order

  15. Tim Knight says:

I think we pretty much know who the Saints are picking.

  16. olddolphan says:

UPDATE FROM FAU STADIUM; The Owls lead Marshall 5-1 in the 7th inning on a hot day in Boca Raton. —-And, speaking of HOT, 8 starting FAU OWLS are hitting over .300 this season!!-And the team is averaging almost exactly a run per inning!!
    ———–
NEXT UP, MIAMI DOLPHINS! – – The best player available at a position of need is Trae Waynes, the best DB available in the 2015 draft!! –Assuming Scherff is off the board, WAYNES is the logical choice!

  17. Mike E. says:

Sweet New Age – Thanks for that!

Yeah, we should leave Collins on the board and take the one legged gimp RB. lol

    That was for YOU Sonny!

  18. Mike E. says:

    Your Picks:
Round 2 Pick 1 (TENN): Breshad Perriman, WR, UCF (B+)
Round 2 Pick 13 (MINN): T.J. Clemmings, OT, Pittsburgh (A-)
Round 2 Pick 15: Stephone Anthony, ILB, Clemson (A-)
Round 3 Pick 2 (TENN): Jalen Collins, CB, LSU (A)
Round 4 Pick 15: Duke Johnson, RB, Miami (Fla.) (A)
Round 5 Pick 13: Charles Gaines, CB, Louisville (B-)
    Round 5 Pick 14: Anthony Harris, SS/FS, Virginia (C+)
Round 6 Pick 15: Blake Bell, TE, Oklahoma (A)

  19. Mike E. says:

    Piggy

Nice article! I had no idea who wrote it either. Cool shit!

  20. The Flying Pig says:

  21. olddolphan says:

MIKE E.; In the unlikely event that FAU’s D’Joun Smith is still available when Miami picks in round 5, I’d prefer taking him over Anthony Harris. WHAT SAY YOU??

  22. The Flying Pig says:

    Hey Giselle

Should I wear the red clown pants or the blue picnic table

    Both…

    Okay then

I just need to grab your ass in every photo so people don’t say I’m gay

    • olddolphan says:

THAT’s RIGHT, PIGGY!!–Grabbing HER ass definitely is the preferred choice. I’m sure she’d find your red clown pants with trotters absolutely irresistable!!!

  23. olddolphan says:

IT’s all over in Boca Raton. –FAU’s baseball team has SWEPT Marshall by scores of 9-4, 10-3 and 6-1. Combined with an 11-5 road victory over UCF, it’s been a terrific week for the baseball OWLS. –Next-up, a Wednesday night showdown with our #1 rivals, the University of Miami at Alex Rodriguez Field in Coral Gables. –The ‘Canes will be looking to avenge their earlier loss to FAU!

  24. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, I think the Saints are taking Gregory.

    • The Flying Pig says:

Yeah but I don’t want to put the Dolphins on the clock midday Sunday when we have no traffic

      Hold Your horses

I will probably put the Dolphins vote up tonight

      • Tim Knight says:

No rush, just saying this is when you usually close the pick. You can keep the Dolphins pick through Monday. It doesn’t matter when it starts.

  25. Mike E. says:

    OD

I would too man, but he was a long gone in the 5th.

  26. Rockphin says:

God dammit. I missed the Cleveland vote. They are not taking Devante Parker!! This draft is starting to suck.
    *
With the players left on the board up there I would be panicking trying to trade down. I guess if I had to stay at 14 I would just bite the bullet and take Trae Waynes

    • Mike E. says:

I didn’t think the Browns would take Parker either, I had them taking Gregory. I think that “he’s going to slip ” theory is crap. I think he still goes top 10.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Yeah
I think the Parker pick was the worst pick of the draft

The Browns were 23 in both defense and offense
With better impact players ont eh boar dlike Grgeory – it mad emore sense for the browns to take Parker

Like I said earlier, I think the last few picks were people picking players they wanted for the Dolphins

IMO the players taken between 9-12 are the most likel;y picks for the Dolphins
I’m not sure I am buying that not a single DB has been slected before we pick
I’m pretty sure either waynes or collisbn goes before 14
And the possibility of a RB going before 14 is high too
and I doubt Grgeory lasts until 13
Bud Dupree might go top 10

  27. Rockphin says:

Just too many questions with the big names left on the board For me to feel comfortable pulling the trigger at 14.
Another part of me says it’s a shot of a player doesn’t matter where in the first round, it’s your first pick who is the best player at a position of need or future need

    • Rockphin says:

and don’t be a smartasses and saying every position is a position of future need. I mean imminent need

  28. Rockphin says:

    Happy Easter everybody

  29. Tim Knight says:

Rock, the Browns are not loaded at WR with the unpredictable Josh Gordon. Sure they could have gone with someone else, but multiple people picking prospects is better than one person doing a mock.

I can’t take any of the personal mocks seriously anymore.

  30. Rockphin says:

LOL agreed. I just wanted the players that got drafted ahead of us! Sour grapes flavored homer Aide

  31. Tim Knight says:

I don’t see any reason to grade this draft. It’s just an exercise of what could happen. Biases are leaking in as if everyone knows it won’t be this but will be that. Go with the flow of how this has gone down. I’d rather look at this than the thousands of silly mock drafts we’ve seen. 🙂

    • Mike E. says:

We all contributed to this draft, so there can’t really be an agenda when 10-15 different people placed their votes, right? A fair amount of the picks weren’t the guy I chose, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a legitimate choice, or that mine was. I think we’re all pretty much on the same level of knowledge here, so this is a collaborative effort.

      • Tim Knight says:

Agreed, I was replying to the comments that this draft is off track. There are always a few surprises in the 1st round so this one is no different and I think it has actually followed suit to the general rankings.

  32. olddolphan says:

ROCK: IF you think this mock draft has some flaws, wait ’till you see THE REAL THING!!–Specifically, look for the CLOWNS to pick ANOTHER head scratcher in round one!!

  33. olddolphan says:

PIGGY; About what time will this poll move on to selection number 14??

    • Brian in NY says:

“Make sure you stop by early Monday morning to vote for the Dolphins. There might be quite a debate about who to pick. I for one look forward to hearing some arguments about who to pick before I make my selection.”

  34. Tim Knight says:

The Saints are taking Gregory, let’s move on. It will be interesting to see where our fans go. Keep it open through Monday or after 15 or so picks. That’s how this entire draft has gone.

  35. new age says:

Yeah, I’m ready to move on as well.

  36. Brian in NY says:

I am locked and loaded for pick 14!

  37. The Flying Pig says:

    LOL @ the impatient humans

  38. Tim Knight says:

Piggy doesn’t want to make the switch to Miami because he’s still hunting for eggs. Just don’t mention bacon. LOL

  39. Mike E. says:

    With the #14 pick, the Cleveland Browns select . . . .

Apparently there has been a trade, and the Browns receive Miami’s #14 pick, in return for the #19 pick and the #77 pick in the 3rd RD.

The Cleveland Browns select Georgia RB, Todd Gurley

  40. The Flying Pig says:

  41. The Flying Pig says:

    Its official
    the saints picked Randy Gregory

    ….hmmmm

    …who picks next….

  42. Tim Knight says:

Who the fuck are the 2 picks for Hundley? Get real! Not gonna happen. Oy!

  43. The Flying Pig says:

I took out the QBs for the Dolphin poll

  44. The Flying Pig says:

If you humans are ready for the Dolphins poll to be posted say Oink

  45. Mike E. says:

    Oink!

  46. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, just make the move. The eggs are not that important. LOL

  47. Mike E. says:

You can start it now Piggy, and keep it open until tomorrow night.

  48. Mike E. says:

    Piggy

I think we should put it out on twitter to vote for the Dolphins pick in our Mock Draft. What do you think?

  49. son of a son of a shula says:

    Suck my Oink

    • The Flying Pig says:

      disgusting

but it does qualify as oink #2

now we only need one more oink to go full beetlejuice….

  50. son of a son of a shula says:

Just put only linemen on the poll Piggs, there’s no point listing anyone else.

    • Mike E. says:

C’mon now. Don’t be like that. This is what happens when a group votes. Todd Gurley will be on the list, and I bet he gets at least 2 votes. lol

  51. son of a son of a shula says:

Weeeeeeeee we got a Guard, yipeeeee

Here Mr. Suh we made a big splash with you so here’s the highest ever drafted guard to go along with you. Welcome to Miami!

    • The Flying Pig says:

The OGs are off the board
now its only Flowers and Peat left
And I think it would be silly to draft one of them – they are strictly tackles

Erving is a possibility – but that is a big reach

  52. The Flying Pig says:

    The poll is up

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Wow Look at that Perriman has the lead, but will be the only skilled position vote cast.

  53. The Flying Pig says:

Personally I’m leaning towatds Trae Waynes and Jaelen Strong

    I can’t decide

  54. Mike E. says:

    Son

Does Suh play WR, or RB? I think he plays on the DL. In order to beat teams that also have excellent DL’s, you need to have an excellent OL. It’s not a crazy concept.

  55. Mike E. says:

I think Flowers could totally move inside. He’s a power player, maybe the strongest OL in the draft.

  56. Mike E. says:

I assume a TRADE BACK is not an option?

    • manitobafinfan says:

Mike: Based on the “who’s left” at this point, if the actual draft goes thus way,i would love to see us drop back a little and possibly recoup at least a third rder.. Seeing Perriman ranked as 30 best in draft (http://www.nfl.com/top50) and from what i read he’d be our best choice of the three WRS left, the fact we signed McCain, takes away the NEED for a CB, with what is left i do not recognize anyone here as an impact add… trade back a bit, not out o f the 1st but back a bit…

      • manitobafinfan says:

Also not discounting our need at OL, but the top two left, you guys, say are Tackles and that was my ?? would either of them be a good fit at guard and , is it too early to plug that spot??

  57. steveccnv says:

    Waynes

  58. Mike E. says:

Do you think “this group” is so unlike almost any other group? I would expect similar results elsewhere, and I also think if we did one next week it would come out completely different. It’s just the way this particular draft went.

  59. Mike E. says:

I kind of see Flowers like Vernon Carey. Maybe I’m wrong, and maybe he wouldn’t want to play inside because of the value a LT has, but he might be an NFL RT anyway, so it’s not unusual for a guy who plays RT to also play G. Gabe Carimi came into his own playing G, after not succeeding at T.

  60. Mike E. says:

    Manitoba

If you’re getting a very good starting G, it’s not too early. Just ask Dallas with Zack Martin, another G/T prospect

    • manitobafinfan says:

who are the very good starting guards available at this point ? will they still be around at say 20?? just pulling a # outta my asss here..

      • manitobafinfan says:

Or is there a huge drop off in guards between our first and second pick… i’d stilll like an Impact Skill position player if they are on the board.. i also really like the other Perryman, but i know too early for him, and hope with his hammy he falls into play later.. hopefully to our recouped 3rd rd pick.. Just my mostly uneducated thoughts..

      • Mike E. says:

Ereck Flowers is 1st RD OT. I’m not sure if he could play inside or not, but Randy would probably have a better answer on that. He’s a mauler, so I can’t imagine why he couldn’t play inside, as well as outside.

        http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/profiles/ereck-flowers?id=2552452

  61. Try Pod says:

I have no idea who to vote for. I really have paid no attention to the draft prospects, with the exception of Devante Parker, woo I stick think is the best overall wr prospect, even though, like I said, I paid no attention- lol.
If any of you are in Pensacola this week, let me know- I’ll be there sometime tomorrow.

  62. Try Pod says:

    Woo I stick think
    Roughly translates to
    Who I still think

  63. wyoming85 says:

It’s not any wonder this country can’t vote in a president!

We can’t even do a mock graft without bitchin an moanin! 😉

  64. Mike E. says:

    Wyo

What’s your thought on Ereck Flowers? Do you think he could/would play inside at G?

    • manitobafinfan says:

What i read on him.. Analysis
Flowers lined up at left tackle for the Hurricanes and has excellent height/bulk for the position. In pass pro, he has quick feet but he isn’t a great knee bender. He plays upright and he catches instead of punching in his set. He often gives up his chest and he has a hang leg versus power, which opens the gate to the quarterback. He is an excellent inline run blocker. He has knock-off power and he is athletic enough to reach/seal on the backside. Overall, I like him better at right tackle and he could develop into a solid starter in time.

What scares me in that is : opens the gate to the quarterback

  65. Mike E. says:

    Piggy

Flowers is compared to Greg Robinson, who’s almost the identical size to Flowers, and Robinson played LG last season for the Rams.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      I don’t see the comparison

Robinson was an elite prospect compared to HOFers like Orlando pace

      Flowers is nothing like that

The only reason he is mentioned in the first round is to play tackle
If he was being drafted as a guard he would be a day 2 prospect

Besides Robinson was drafted to play LT for the rams
And we would be drafting an An OL to play OG not to eventually play LT
The rams are stating Robinson at LT
And did last year as well when along went down

  66. wyoming85 says:

    Mike E
    I Think it’s possible
I’m not Randy or anything though!

  67. The Flying Pig says:

    My vote is in

    Jaelen Strong it is

I just think he’s the real deal and will give Tanny a great target for years

  68. manitobafinfan says:

Flowers was a part-time starter at right tackle as a true freshman in 2012 before moving to the left side in 2013 and becoming a full-time starter. Some analysts see him as a better fit on the right side; that group includes Mayock, who sees Flowers as a potential “Pro Bowl right tackle.” If This is tthe case , take him play at RT, and slide James ? Inside ?? that may be worth the pick at 14..

  69. Ken says:

Happy Easter everyone. Great job Piggy on the Josh Freeman article.

  70. Ken says:

Of those left at our picks now that the big 3 WRs off the board I put in for Trae Waynes. I think he is BPA at 14 and it’s not like we don’t need CB.

  71. Ken says:

    Manitoba:
I am doing alright. I been busy as hell at work. Some other family stuff to deal with my mom so I have not been on the blog as much as I would like. But I am hanging in and eagerly awaiting the draft. How about you?

  72. getterdone says:

    DGB better be there!

  73. getterdone says:

    I vote Rand Paul 😉

  74. The Flying Pig says:

I have a feeling Waynes will end up being our vote

The WRs are going to split the vote
Between strong, Perriman and DGB everyone has a preference
The reality is I would happy with any of those 3 in the 2nd round
But waiting for one of them in the 2nd is a bit risky

I’m not as excited about drafting Angholor or Dorsett as others are in light of the ability to get a big physical receiver

And I don’t want Coates who probably won’t see the field
But if I knew the next 3 WRs would be there in the 2nd I would take a DB like Waynes now or even Collins

I don’t want to miss our shot at the big WR who can be a great target for Tanny

    • Ken says:

I want a WR too but if the big 3 are off the board I think the next group of WRs is fairly equal with real good talent amongst them. Waynes is clearly the best CB in the draft. If we can walk away at no. 14 with the best CB in the draft I think he have to take him and find your WR in round 2.

    • olddolphan says:

PIGGY; I voted for Waynes as soon as I saw the poll was up. This fascination with tall receivers is OK. But, at 14, Waynes, IMHO, is the best guy available at a position of NEED. DON’T want the 4th or 5th best WR over the best DB. But I’m sure many/most will disagree. –IF we take Waynes in round one that means we MUST take the BEST O-Line guy available in round 2, especially since we don’t know if ALBERT will be ready to go in week 1.

  75. getterdone says:

I think the choice for Mimi based on what is listed above is LB Kendricks, then hope for WR’s Perriman or DGB in the 2nd.
The other way around may not work for getting Kendricks….IMO.

  76. Ken says:

    Piggy:
Why are you so down on Coates? I have seen him a few times and I really liked him. He was torching Alabama this year.

  77. getterdone says:

LOL @ Ken on drag route.

  78. Try Pod says:

Only two companies made this list. I own one of the cars and will be getting another around August: https://www.yahoo.com/autos/best-cars-for-making-it-to-200-000-miles-115393188437.html

  79. The Flying Pig says:

    Ken
    Coates is a physical freak
But that is where my fascination with him ends
    Bad route runner
    Dropsies
    Gives up on plays

Auburn used him as a vertical threat
And that is basically what he is right now

Maybe he can be a versatile receiver at the next level
    But he wasn’t as auburn

Maybe if his hands were a little better I would like him more
I do think he fights for the ball…sometimes….

    • Ken says:

I have seen him make some big plays. True he is primarily a vertical threat but Auburn’s passing game with Nick Marshall was pretty vanilla. Despite that everyone knew he was a vertical threat he still got open all the time plus he has size. I like what I have seen but I get that there is probably a learning curve with him coming from a pretty generic passing offense.

      • The Flying Pig says:

But his cohort Duke Williams did so much more than Coates in terms of diverse route running

        I don’t hate Coates
I just think he is more headache than production

  80. Ken says:

I have another busy day tomorrow so I am turning in early. Peace to you all.

  81. The Flying Pig says:

    Coates

    See a trend here

    He does flash big though

  82. new age says:

Wayne’s isn’t my first choice but this time he is my choice.

I’m not as excited about drafting Angholor or Dorsett as others are in light of the ability to get a big physical receiver

I agree with Pig on the big WR, because you don’t win by moving the ball between the 20s, we need that big receiver to score.

Wainright from the Cardinals is 1-0 after the Cards beat the Cubs, at his current pace he’ll be 36-0 and have the best season by any pitcher in baseball history.

As ridiculous as this sounds, it was meant to sound that way, but surely some baseball writer will start the BS with the guy that hits 3 HRs in his first 5 games is on pace to hit 108 HRs. These dumbasses do it every yr.

    Don’t be that guy 😉

With Coates you have to look who threw to him. Did you see Marshall throw at the combine? Everything was behind receivers and lots dropped them. They count drops off catchable passes but the don’t take into consideration what kind of contortions ya have to do to catch them or the fact the QB three it at the wrong part if your route. I think Coates us one of those guys who will be better in pros once he has a good qb throwing to him.
