Wedge Scouting Report: Landon Collins

LandonCollins1 Wedge ID

Well it’s finally time we talk about safeties.  Let’s start at the top with Landon Collins from the University of Alabama.  Hey…What’s that smell?  It stinks!!!  It smells like….like…like….like Saban!   Gross it’s the Saban Stench.  Well if we are going to talk about Landon Collins, we better do something about that stench.  Just sit still Collins, it only hurts at first.

 CollinsDecomShower

Ahhhh,  that is much better.  Now please don’t hit me Landon Collins.  I know you can hit.  Matter of fact Collins is a classic strong safety.  A big hitter who’s strength is his best attribute.  Collins will lay the ball carrier out and let him know afterwards that the field is his and you better hope you get off it alive.

LandonCollins#3

Collins is known for his strength.  But don’ let that fool you, Collins can run too.  He ran the fastest 40 yard dash among the safeties who ran at the combine.  He’s not exactly a ball hawk, only intercepting five passes in his college career but he can run with most receivers.

LandonCollins4

In 3 years at Alabama Collins had 190 total tackles including over 8 for a loss.  He also forced 3 fumbles.  Collins is excellent against the run.  He shows patience before the snap, reads the play, aggressively attacks the play and BANG – the running back hits the ground.  These skills also make Collins a heck of a asset on special teams.

LandonCollins5

Collins also does a good job tracking the ball in the air and breaking up the pass.  Although some scouts think his biggest weakness is his coverage skills.   But in a zone scheme Collins can set the tone and be a disruptive force.

LandonCollins4

If I was going to compare Collins to an Alien Weapon of Destruction I would compare him to a Gravitron Planetary Drill.  He’s gonna hit you.  He’s gonna drill right to your core.  And you are going to explode!

True to my core and make me explode?? Uuuuuuhhhh I think I will pass thank you.

  2. jahndoh says:

This is the guy Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan mocked to us yesterday in the 1st and then they mocked Coates to us in the 2nd….FYI.

From other page: Bat, I’m well. Busy as hell building a brewery and trying to keep up my day job and you know, well, be a father and husband.

Not enough hours in the day, and not enough clones in my clone army.

  3. bat says:

Jahn .. Building a brewery? ..Cool ..Best of luck!

  4. bat says:

    OK ..Out for now ..Later

  5. Tim Knight says:

Collins has enforcer type ability on defense. He’s a tone setter. I would not be shocked if we drafted him.

    • Tim Knight says:

In fact, that’s who I picked for us in our mock. I thought he was the BPA and at a position where we could use some depth. Even if he doesn’t start right away and he probably would, he’d likely be a STs demon and on the field in nickel and dime. He’s close to LB size so he would be good in that role and could still help stop the run.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      I wouldn’t love the pick

      Bu it’s not crazy either

  6. BoulderPhinfan says:

nice job piggy. I’d be ok with collins at 14. But I think CB, OG are bigger needs.
Here is an interesting article about moving up

    http://justblogbaby.com/2015/04/10/oakland-raiders-miami-dolphins-could-swap-picks/

    • The Flying Pig says:

Doesn’t look like the writer thinks the trade is going to happen…lol

I’m not sure if I were the raiders I would be eager to drop down 10 spots

  7. The Flying Pig says:

    That’s true Tim

But, I think we can get the same kind of player in Perryman
And I would rather have a hard hitting MLB then a safety who is not necessarily strong on coverage

  8. The Flying Pig says:

I just realized the Saban stench pic is missing

I think I accidentally deleted it

Gotta fix that when I get back home

  9. Tim Knight says:

Boulder, not sure the top OL (Scherff or Collins) who could play guard will be there for us and I personally like Collins over Waynes. I think Taylor will start off as a starter at CB opposite Grimes. But Safety is a bit more questionable with Delmas coming off of knee surgery and Aikens and Thomas are both just projections at this time.

Also where there’s smoke there’s fire. I do think we want to trade up for White or Cooper.

  10. rgs322 says:

I like the idea of Collins being a safety/LB hybrid, plus he’s a very good special teamer. I’m all for the versatile player.
Also, secondary is one of the areas worthy of a 1st round pick.

  11. getterdone says:

Landon Collins, Meh, I’ll pass on any DB from Satan’s army.

  12. Tim Knight says:

I know a lot of people write off Misi at MLB but I don’t think the team has. I’m not sure anyone in the draft would replace him either. The guy played on a high ankle sprain all season and those injuries linger. Hopefully Misi will stay healthy this year and if he does I don’t think we’ll have any issues at MLB. We need to find a 3rd LB to join Misi and Jenkins and we might roll with who we already have.

    • getterdone says:

I’m ok with the Misi MLB experiment for a lil while longer. I’m willing to give the benefit of doubt to the staff on this one. I’d really like to see what he can do behind Suh!!!
Get healthy Koa and make some plays baby!

  13. getterdone says:

Tim, LOL, did that sound bias against Nicky Satan?
Collins doesn’t jump out to me as being way ahead of the pack @ S.
Rather than spend a 1st round pick on him, I’d go for a guy like Amos or Drummond later.
We have resigned Delmas & we drafted Aikens in the 4th last year, plus we have a versatile Michael Thomas.
Therefore I say Hell No to drafting a safety in the first round, and I’m leaning that way @ CB too (hoping more from Jamar Taylor)

    • Tim Knight says:

I mentioned the same guys you did already on the team. I’m just discussing all sorts of options for us. I don’t have a clear favorite at #14. However, I would love to land White or Cooper, Cooper or White whoever we covet more.

The way I view our team, we already have a lot of developmental players on the team we need to take the next step. I say get special and let’s roll. 😉

      • getterdone says:

Yep, is why I’ve maintained all along, even before Tannenbaum got promoted, that Miami should be swinging for the fences if it’s Playoffs or Bust.
Is why I was intrigued in drafting a DGB, a White, Cooper, Maxx Williams, or Clive Walford.
I want an impact player on offense. We got our impact guy on D (I know we need more pieces)
But we totally gutted our receiving corp, Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Clay, All Gone!
We need impact players to replace that in this passing oriented league!

  14. Tim Knight says:

GD, Cameron and Stills was a solid start. Matthews has a great opportunity staring him in the face too. Let’s see if he seizes it.

    • getterdone says:

Yup, it’s a start, but more is needed in our receiving corp & possibly RB corp.
We also need to add another piece to the OL.

  15. getterdone says:

Our FA moves have been very exciting, outside the box moves. I can only wait with anticipation for what the rest of this offseason holds with the Draft.

  16. finfanrob says:

did i hear correct on the radio today that the fins made pouncey the highest paid center in the league? if so, that i dont get. i mean their o line sucks, why reward someone on it

    • getterdone says:

He’s still like 25, so it ties him up till he’s 30, if we keep him for the duration.
By this time in 2017, there wil be other Centers getting bigger deals…so pay him now, or pay him later.
Tanny needs some kinda continuity infront of him. Hopefully that starts with Pouncey & James!

  17. The Flying Pig says:

    FYI

A pic the was originally intended in this post was just added

  18. getterdone says:

I guess numbnuts wants to draft a QB. 😉

    Omar Kelly ✔ @OmarKelly
In a perfect world I’d draft a QB with the arm, athleticism, smarts & moxy and develop him for 3 years. The world’s never perfect though.

  19. Tim Knight says:

FFR, don’t forget Pouncey was coming off of hip surgery and missed TC, the PS and the first 4-5 games or whatever, then played a new position at RG. He’s a great fit at center for us in our new offense and ZBS – he’s a great 2nd level blocker. We also need to get Albert back. The OL had major issues last year being rebuilt off of bullygate as well.

  20. stangerx says:

“As I have said all along, it looks like the Patriots were the victims in this whole ordeal……As a Pats fan, I can’t wait for justice to be served.”

—– A Pats blogger on deflategate.

Oh — and he bases on this random tweet.

    Sharks of Vegas @SharksOfVegas
The Wells Report will have almost nothing to do with the Patriots. It is an investigation into the officials and the Colts.

  21. stangerx says:

“Hey…What’s that smell? It stinks!!! It smells like….like…like….like Saban! Gross it’s the Saban Stench.”

LOL Pig……that smell does stink. Much as I hate to admit, it is cause Little Satan gets more out of his players than other coaches do. You are drafting less potential.

  22. finfanrob says:

    getter

in a perfect world no one would ever cut and paste anything that idiot says.

and as far as pouncey goes, he just isnt good enough to be the highest paid center in the league. i think he is ok. but not the best center in the league. a bad move imo

    • stangerx says:

O is O, and he certainly gets the interest factor going. Checked out that Justin Beiber is wanted in Argentina too.

    • getterdone says:

Alas, I’m not perfect…far from it.

Pouncey is the best thing we got @ C at this point, no sense in losing him and starting over there. We still need to solidify the OG spots.

    • Tim Knight says:

2013 Mike Pouncey was a pro bowl center, and that’s not just on reputation, the guy only played 3 years in the league at the time. He also made the pro bowl at guard last year. I think it’s safe to say a lot of people in the league respect him. LOL

When Brandon Albert signed he cited Pouncey as a big reason. When Suh signed he said he can’t wait to compete against Pouncey in practice. Jury of his peers.

We watch on TV and go to games, people in the league sit next to each other and watch each other work that isn’t public.

Pouncey would have gotten this deal on the open market. Not a shocker at all. Knew it was coming. By the way, the next top center will be the highest paid center in the league. In a few years someone will surpass Suh as the top paid DL. That’s how it works.

I agree 100% on the impact players GDP.

    • getterdone says:

      Thanks Brian, I appreciate that.
Now Go Teheran, beat Gee! 😉

    • Tim Knight says:

That’s why you shouldn’t be against moving up to 4 or 5 for White/Cooper. It’s not like we only have 1-2 WRs competing this year. But we need special, not quantity.

I just get this feeling this team is gearing up to go for it, not stay idle and hope for the best.

      • Brian in NY says:

IMO, we went for it in FA with Suh, and by jettisoning our mediocre WR’s and one malcontent to boot. “Going for it” doesn’t have to be done with reckless abandon.

  24. jetsssuck says:

Here’s one 4 u guys. I bring the 4 grandkids to walmart 4 food shopping. Well I accidently fart but I try to act like it was my sneakers rubbing wrongly on the floor. The oldest granddaughter says you just farted with a disgusted look. She says it to embarrass me with everyone in the isle can hear her. I finally get to the next isle and the smallest grandson(4) starts making the fart noises with his hands and I tell him to stop then all the little fucks start making fart noises with their armpits/hands.These kids no a days are a embarrassment where I can take them anywhere.

    • getterdone says:

      Oh c’mon, they’re just lil farts 😉

    • jetsssuck says:

      can’t take them anywhere.

      • getterdone says:

When answering a homework question or the like, I always tell my lil niece’s & nephew’s that I’m a fart smeller.
Then after they go run off laughing telling their mom, I said, No, I’m a smart feller. 😉
        Kids love it….lol

      • jetsssuck says:

I have dreams of not saving them from a alligator pit. I’m told from another parenting blog this is normal.

  25. getterdone says:

Tim, even if we don’t trade up, I can still see the Phins going for it by drafting say WR Perriman @ #14, or same with a trade down & still drafting Perriman or DGB with our 1st pick.

  26. The Flying Pig says:

    Stanger

The Patriots will be cleared in the same way wiping your ass prevents you from shitting again

  27. Brian in NY says:

If Parker is gone at 14 (Cooper and White will be), then my vote is for Gurley.

    • getterdone says:

That one worries me for some reason.

      • Brian in NY says:

He’s reportedly healing well. We have Miller so we don’t have to rush him back week 1. He’s going to be a game changer in the NFL, and would be an incredible weapon in Lazor’s offense.

  28. getterdone says:

LMAO @ Jetssuck on ‘Not’ saving his grand kids from an alligator pit, which is quite normal, unless you’re the one that threw them in there to begin with. 😯

and a big fat whatever to what you guys say about pouncey. if he is the best in the league then i guess the fins are in for another long season with the oline. i dont care what others say about him i care about 8,000 sacks in two seasons

  30. wyoming85 says:

I gotta get me one of these! 🙂

So I take it this jackass is all in on Winston….lol

    Omar Kelly ✔ @OmarKelly
The MAIN thing that troubles me is Marcus Mariota’s personality. It’s worse than Tannehill’s, which is scary. I wouldn’t follow that dude.

    • getterdone says:

Lot of decent prospects there for us…I’m surprised they kept Eric Rowe on the down low….probably by design since the FO seems to be high on him.

there is nothing about him that amazes me. but what does amaze me are the people that follow him or listen to anything the idiot says. but then again britney spears made millions for being able to ‘sing’ and the kardslutians are millionaires cause people in this country are just too stupid for there own goods some times.

    • Brian in NY says:

Exactly. following him or reposting his tweets just gives him what he wants. I said the same thing about people who complainined about Home: just don’t read what he has to say.

    • Tim Knight says:

I’m tired of all of them. They all take negative angles and it’s annoying. I just replied to GD’s post.

    • getterdone says:

Butt the Kardslutians got dat ass, got dat ass, got dat ass. 😉

  39. getterdone says:

I just throw out a dumb Omar tweet once in awhile when I see a doozy. It doesn’t bother me like it seems to FFR.
In fact, it strengthens my fandom for Tanny, etc.

  40. Brian in NY says:

    GDP,
I’m not too familiar with Waller, but I remember watching some of Smelter and he really caught my eye. Too bad injuries have derailed his career a bit.

  42. getterdone says:

    Waller in 2013 smoking DB’s.

  43. getterdone says:

Waller should also be a pretty good blocker from his days in GT’s triple option offense. He could spring Miller, Landry or Cameron for some big plays.

    • getterdone says:

Waller is my DGB 2.0…he’d make me forget all about DGB and can be had later. 🙂

    • Brian in NY says:

Thanks GDP. He makes for an interesting prospect for sure. He’s slated to go in the 4th or 5th round. If he’s there in the 5th when we have back to back picks I’d definitely take a flyer on him.

      • getterdone says:

There is also a 7min + clip of him vs. Miss St in 2014….he makes a great one handed TD catch in the endzone with a DB all over him, got flagged for PI @ the 1:46 mark.

  44. finfanrob says:

JUST A QUICK REPORT. —Haven’t been around for a bit b/c the bad case of the super bug me and Mrs. OD caught got significantly worse Thursday night and Friday morning. My temp rose quickly to 101 degrees and I felt like I was back in the Army on maneuvers south of San Antonio near the Mexican border in August!! Poor Mrs. OD was also doing poorly. Walk in clinic put 2 doctors on our case. We eventually walked out with 3 prescriptions for me and 2 for my sweetheart, which is bad news for her b/c she’s allergic to the 3rd one. ANYWAY, we were told we’d be non-contagious within 24 hours and symptom free in time to drive to Tennessee on Wednesday, which was great news! Yesterday, though, we both felt like we’d had Larry little shove our daces into the dirt so that Larry Csonka could run us over during the ’72 Perfect Season!!
    —————
DID SEE that ex-FAU star TE Rob Housler signed a 1-year deal with the Clowns!! Maybe He’ll become Manziel’s drinking buddy!! Those who criticize drinking in Cleveland have never lived in Cleveland.
    —————
Also saw that POUNCEY signed a huge deal to stay in Miami. –Time will tell if this was a smart deal or not. Pouncey has yet to prove to me that he’s an upper echelon NFL center. Maybe THIS is the year he’ll do it.

  47. Ken says:

So Pouncey is the highest paid OC? Meh. I think he is highly overrated but at least it’s one position we don’t have to worry about for a few years

I really like the heat next year if they find replacements for UD, birdman and a 3 point sharpshooter and finally stay healthy.

      • Try Pod says:

Interesting to see how Bosh comes back. Wade is old, now. I’m hoping Riley has already mapped out the future.

      • jetsssuck says:

Wade is not like he was earlier in his career but he is still a top 15 player in the league. With Drakric(sic) and Wade we have a very good top 3 backcourt. With Bosh and if Whiteside continues improving we have a top 3 big man line up. They could compete next year for the crown with the new pieces from this year if they stayed healthy. Bealsly I think could emerge finally the guy can create his own shot but I don’t know if it’s his defense or off-court issues that keeps out of the line up

      • Try Pod says:

I like Wade, too- he is the face of the Heat as much as Marino was the face is the Dolphins- but he can’t play effectively on back to back nights, can’t put in the minutes per game he used to, and will be one year older next season. Counting on him to be a leader contributor going forward is not a good bet. And unlike Jordan, who developed an outside game as he got older and unable to penetrate to the basket, Wade had never improved his outside game; that is not to say his outside game is bad, but he never improved it.

Me too man. I love that show, and I wish he’d come out with book 6, The Winds of Winter.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I do to read the books

I’m happy with the show by itself

I read half of the first book
      It’s identical to the show

I also bought those audio books but never really made time to listen to it

  60. The Flying Pig says:

  61. Mike E. says:

I think the books are better than the show. In fact, I’m still kind of pissed off that they changed things from the book (major things at that) in the show.

  62. Mike E. says:

    Bri

That’s true, always true. Fuck Mejia BTW, asshat!

    • Brian in NY says:

Yup. Did you see the Knicks blow it last night? Hardaway Jr. couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn all game, then he scores 7 in the last minute, the last being a 3 with 12 seconds left.

  63. Mike E. says:

    I like this draft!

I’d say it’s very much like taking Ja’Wuan James last year. I think he’s going to be a very good player in the NFL, has the versatility to play outside or inside. It’s not what everyone else thinks, it’s what we (Dolphins) think. If they can Fisher can step in to a starting role at G right now, and be an upgrade over what we currently have, then that’s all that matters. He’s also a nice insurance policy if Albert isn’t healthy. He may go in the 2nd, but it’s possible Ja’Wuan James would have as well. Does it matter now? Not even one little bit.

    • The Flying Pig says:

First Pick has him going early in many drafts

But he is not 1st round material IMO

Taking Fisher in the 1st round is the antiBPA IMO
It’s just elevating positional need very high

And there is no reason for it
Ali marpet, john miller, tre jackson, laken Tomlinson
There will be OGs available in day 2 and day 3
I don’t think fisher is a much better prospect than the OGs
The only reason he is likely to go earlier than them is bc he is an OT

But we would be drafting him to play OG – so what’s the point of reaching

I do think fisher is more likely to be a capable OG than flowers or peat though
So I don’t hate the player so much
I just don’t see it as utilizing the draft to bring in the best players

      • Mike E. says:

I’d say forget Laken Tomlinson. I’d say there’s ZERO chance we take him. Gabe Jackson was a far better guard than Tomlinson, who I don’t think is a fit at all for a ZBS. I guess we’d be drafting him to play G, but if Albert can’t go, James go to LT, and Fisher to RT. I like that versatility. Also, I’d hope he’s better than Dallas Thomas.

  65. wyoming85 says:

    Like I’ve said before!
It all depends on Albert’s health

If they don’t think Turner / James can man the OT spots
or Thomas / ??????????? can man the OG positions?

Then an OT is needed early!

    • Mike E. says:

That’s how I feel, but some think Jason Fox is capable. I for one, don’t believe that for a second. We’ve seen Thomas at OT, it’s not pretty. He made Jon Martin look OK. lol

  66. Mike E. says:

Good road trip. 3-3 against the Nats and hot Bravos.

  67. Tim Knight says:

Okay, done with yard work. Next up grill, do laundry and sleep. LOL

GOT starts tonight, cool. Not sure I catch it tonight.

Solid start for the Mets. I still question their defense and lineup but I love the pitching.

    • Mike E. says:

I kept thinking during the exhibition season that they were hitting too much, and feared they would cool down as soon as the season started. Well, it happened, and it sucks! This lineup is anemic, and if Flores doesn’t hit, he’s not worth a shit, because his defense isn’t as good as Tejada’s. We do need to give Flores a chance though, I’d say at least a month or more to see if he can get himself going.

    • stangerx says:

Interesting comment by Joe.””seems like he is saying, “put up or shut up” to both Davis and Taylor.

““This is year three. Neither one played any meaningful time their first year. Last year both of them contributed somewhat and both ended up on injured reserve. They should have enough experience. You know the drill. You’ve been around. You’ve been in the system. Coverages haven’t changed a lot. It’s an important year for them.”

      • Mike E. says:

Glad he said it, because it’s the truth. We have to see something from these guys, and not just a flash, but one or both of these guys need to show they can play, and play for an entire season.

      • stangerx says:

True they do need to show. My Q is what kinda of insurance policy do we buy against it not happening……..and that includes pick #14, even if that would be mostly an upgrade move.

This is a very deep draft for CB’s. I think there are CB’s in RD2 and 3 that could potentially be starters this year. There just aren’t really any top 10 CB’s this year, although Waynes is probably closest. I think some of the 2nd and 3rd RD guys like Ronald Darby, Jalen Collins, Kevin Johnson, D’Joun Smith, PJ WIlliams and Byron Jones, and then 3rd and 4th RD guys like Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Eric Rowe, Senquez Golson Josh Shaw, Doran Grant and Charles Gaines might too. In fact, a few of the guys I said might be 3rd and 4th RD guys could end up being 2nd and 3rd RD guys, and some might slip to the 5th or later. In any case, there is a lot of talent at CB in this draft.

    • steveccnv says:

Waynes reminds of Dion, but he can tackle, so… If we take a CB other than in the first he won’t be starting opening day, so what’s the point, when we have a few other spots that need an immediate starter?

  72. steveccnv says:

.@JasonPhilCole listed the Redskins, Jets, Bears, Rams, Cleveland, Philadelphia & Chargers are all in the bidding for Mariota w/ TEN.
    ———————————-

This is good news, if accurate and the jets get him they’ll have to trade up instead of just taking him at their spot.

I believe SD trades Rivers and takes him.

Bordentown is about 30-40 minutes from me.

I just found out Dan Marino was in my town for an opening of a Pizzeria. I don’t know why he was there, other than the fact that he got paid handsomely. You’d think they’d have a Giants player, or Jets player, not a Miami Dolphins QB. Too bad I missed it!

  77. Mike E. says:

    Steve

I think a few of the guys I mentioned can be starters, especially the 2nd RD guys, and maybe even some of the 3rd and 4th RD guys.

  78. Mike E. says:

OK, going down to the mancave to watch GOT. Later!
