Dolphins Mock Draft

by son of a son of a shula

Alright no stories of poop today, instead we’ll discuss ordinary draft bullshit. Kiper has us taking Nelson Agholor at 14. Talk about a stretch or reach. Most mocks out there have us taking either a CB, OT who will play Guard or a Wide Receiver. Well we are officially inside of two weeks until the draft starts so there is an end in sight. Thank goodness because this really gets crazy and guys like Kiper flip out. Remember you should take the best athlete or player at your pick not reach for a position of supposed need.
If there is a run early on Wideouts then the idea of trading way up to get Cooper or White makes sense, you will have beaten the crowd to the checkout. But an early slip up by the first few teams could leave a high end top five player dangling out there. Imagine if Fowler slid to #5, teams would go crazy trying to trade up to get him. Charles Davis has Leonard Williams going at #5 in his mock to show yet again the insanity that begins to creep in.
I feel that the NFL people evaluate the talent pretty well and I don’t expect to see many of the crazy things we see from mocksters. Based on that assumption I will put forth my mock of the top 15 picks followed by my mock/hope for the Dolphins haul in this draft.

1. Bucs – Winston
2. San Diego – Mariota (trade)
3. Jax – Fowler Jr.
4. Oakland – White
5. Washington – Williams
6. Stej – Beasley (eerie shades of Gholston)
7. Dolphins – Cooper (trade)
8. Atlanta – Shane Ray
9. Giants – Brandon Scherff
10. St. Louis – Jalen Collins
11. Minnesota – Devonte Parker
12. Cleveland – La’el Collins
13. Saints – Randy Gregory
14. Chicago – Breshad Perriman
15. San Fran – Arik Amstead

As you can see we make a splash and land Amari Cooper who will fit our offense like a glove. And I’m as insane as Charles Davis.

The rest of our draft is as follows, assuming we used next years #1 to move up and maybe another player. Whatever the trade compensation would be I’m assuming for the purposes of doing this that we retain the remainder of our picks.

2 – McKinney LB
4 – Nick O’Leary TE
5 – Arie Kouandijo G
5 – Cam Thomas CB
6 – Tyler Varga – You knew I had to do that!

So there are my predictions as we move inside of two weeks to the actual draft.

Four months of non-stop draft speculation/hope/dreams is like watching four hours of porn before going out on a “first” date! When that first pick ‘comes’ out on stage, fans will express a montage of relief, guilt, disappointment. 🙂

With that said… we apparently need three picks in the top ten of the first round to make us all happy. LOL

  2. Rhino says:

I feel fortunate to have the Warriors to ease my professional sports drought (A’s tore my heart out last year and I am having a hard time bonding with an entirely new roster).

BUT I still feel like Fins need to keep throwing OL shit against the wall until we finally get it fixed. Build the best OL in the NFL and we will get it done. The last 7 years was a transition of philosophies that created a very rough transition in the types of OL players we had. We are almost to the spot we have all guys to play the same system. I’d move up for Scherff, that’s it. OL drop off is greater than WR. I don’t think CB is in our first round sites anymore. OL, WR, LB. 2nd round is pretty damn good this year AND Ireland won’t be making these 2nd round picks. 🙂

I really hate the new draft format on Thursday evenings to start things off. It makes it hard to do a draft party/get together. Looks like it will be me, a tv and my lap top for the draft this year.

    • Mike E. says:

I’ve thought about doing a party Friday night of the draft, but not sure if anyone was into it.

      • Mike E. says:

Plus, we don’t have a 3rd RD pick, at least at the moment.

      • Ken says:

I know it kind of makes it hard to have a get together. If it were rounds 1 & 2 like it used to be it would be a different story. I really don’t like the new draft format.

  8. bat says:

I cannot begin to express my disappointment that a weapon as unique and ground breaking as the “Scrotum Hurts Now Device” was beaten out by a contraption apparently designed to deal with a rogue octopus.

  9. Mike E. says:

LMAO @ Bat – So many disappointments associated with this team, you just wouldn’t expect that to be one of them.

  10. bat says:

Mike … LOL … exactly .. Now if instead of the “Tentacle Disposer”, it would have been the “Philbin-Coyle Disposer”, I would have been thrilled…

  11. Ken says:

Just saw Phins are having Lael Collins come for a visit. If we don’t go WR he is my choice for us at 14.

    Who is John James?

    • stangerx says:

A new poster. Could just be a Varga fan and we never see him again or maybe he just wanted to join the convo and thought he couldn’t. Cause of spam stuff, somebody has to allow a first time poster’s initial comment to hit the board.

  15. stangerx says:

“it would have been the “Philbin-Coyle Disposer”, I would have been thrilled…”

LMAO Bat……..you sure ain’t a fan of the higher-ups. Thinking Ireland right now is feeling like Sanchez after colonpokey moved on. 🙂

  16. Tim Knight says:

I don’t think #1 WR is the way to look at it. Just add another talented WR, we use 3 of them most of the time.

Tim … Nevermore was OK, I was a fan mainly for the lead singer Worrell Dane. I loved his original band “Sanctuary”. ..”Refuge Denied” and “The Mirror Black” are awesome albums. .Check them out. Dane’s voice is not nearly as dynamic with “Nevermore” .. Sanctuary actually reformed with Dane and released a new CD last year. …….A sample from “Refuge Denied” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BExMRGMfG1o

I know the drummer Van Williams who has a new band Ghost Ship Octavius. He became friends with my best friend growing up when he moved to New York State. We would hang out when we were like 18 in Newburgh by the river. I haven’t seen him in a long time but I just spoke to him on the phone a few weeks ago on a conference call with my friend. He’s a great guy and drummer. I’m a big fan of Jeff Loomis’ guitar playing.

Terrence Fede is back at his alma mater today for Marist College’s spring game, and then it’s back to South Florida for the start of the Dolphins’ offseason program Monday.

Fede already made Marist history last year when he became the first player from that school to get drafted, but he’s looking ahead now, more precisely looking to get better and build on what overall was a promising rookie season in the NFL.

“I’m looking forward to just stepping up my role on the defensive line, being more of a factor in that and still continuing to be a factor on special teams,” Fede said in an exclusive interview with the Finsiders. “(Special teams) Coach (Darren) Rizzi has something in place for us and I’m looking forward to helping out the team in any way that they need me to do. I’m just looking forward to that.”

Continuing his verbal assault on the second-year tight end, the coach hinted that Amaro might want to watch his back this season.

Ina a recent radio interview, Amaro said the 2014 Jets — Ryan’s team — lacked accountability.

“The kid’s got some talent. I’m just going to leave it at that. I just know one thing: He totally misspoke, and talk about accountable — he’s going to be accountable when he go to play him. He’s going to be accountable for his comments.”

“Clearly, Amaro touched a nerve. Ryan first responded in this week’s edition of Sports Illustrated, saying Amaro is ‘full of s—. It’s not the truth. That kid’s a little … he’s going to get … we’ll see what happens.'”

  46. Mike E. says:

Stanger – La’el Collins would also get an A+ 😀

  47. Mike E. says:

I heard Ryan on NFL radio. He said if that comment came from Mangold, or Ferguson, or David Harris, he’d be hurt, but from that kid (Amaro), not at all. He also intimated that Amaro better watch out when they play the Bills.

  50. John James says:

    Thanks for the welcome guys.
I am just a fan from the west coast who came across your blog. Thanks for letting me participate.

Here is some insight in to the RB position. According to 2014 NFL rushing stats (inc all RBs with 100+ ATT), a 20+ yard run occurs about once every 38 rushing attempts. If you only look at the bottom half of the league it is much worse than that. Teams with good Offensive Lines fair a bit better and ones that have poor lines have very few runs of 20+. Backs with more than five 20+ yard runs are very few and many have only one or two. So here is a good question, why is everyone hung up on the 40 time? Most plays happen in the -10 yard world. This is football, not a track meet! Is the ten split not a way more important measurement than the 40 time?

Varga runs a 1.59 ten split, a 4.22 shuttle, has 10 5/8 hands, reportedly benches 275lbs 20+times and squats 600lbs. All these numbers are backed up by his play in the footage of this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4JboJbEQG8
I doubt that there is another RB available in this draft that has those attributes plus a 225lb racked up frame and blocking ability. To bill him as a FB is just stupidity. Zach Zenner is another one like this but if you watch his tape he just does not run with power, burst and lateral quickness that Varga has.

People can Gurly and Gordon all they want but if these two go to a bottom feeder offensive line they will produce very little and their career will be very short and that to me is a wasted pick..

Tyler Fucking Varga in the 5th or later is an absolute steal. I doubt he lasts that long. Anyone that knows what they are doing will probably take him in the 3rd or 4th.
