Dolphins Mock Draft

by son of a son of a shula

Alright no stories of poop today, instead we’ll discuss ordinary draft bullshit. Kiper has us taking Nelson Agholor at 14. Talk about a stretch or reach. Most mocks out there have us taking either a CB, OT who will play Guard or a Wide Receiver. Well we are officially inside of two weeks until the draft starts so there is an end in sight. Thank goodness because this really gets crazy and guys like Kiper flip out. Remember you should take the best athlete or player at your pick not reach for a position of supposed need.
If there is a run early on Wideouts then the idea of trading way up to get Cooper or White makes sense, you will have beaten the crowd to the checkout. But an early slip up by the first few teams could leave a high end top five player dangling out there. Imagine if Fowler slid to #5, teams would go crazy trying to trade up to get him. Charles Davis has Leonard Williams going at #5 in his mock to show yet again the insanity that begins to creep in.
I feel that the NFL people evaluate the talent pretty well and I don’t expect to see many of the crazy things we see from mocksters. Based on that assumption I will put forth my mock of the top 15 picks followed by my mock/hope for the Dolphins haul in this draft.

1. Bucs – Winston
2. San Diego – Mariota (trade)
3. Jax – Fowler Jr.
4. Oakland – White
5. Washington – Williams
6. Stej – Beasley (eerie shades of Gholston)
7. Dolphins – Cooper (trade)
8. Atlanta – Shane Ray
9. Giants – Brandon Scherff
10. St. Louis – Jalen Collins
11. Minnesota – Devonte Parker
12. Cleveland – La’el Collins
13. Saints – Randy Gregory
14. Chicago – Breshad Perriman
15. San Fran – Arik Amstead

As you can see we make a splash and land Amari Cooper who will fit our offense like a glove. And I’m as insane as Charles Davis.

The rest of our draft is as follows, assuming we used next years #1 to move up and maybe another player. Whatever the trade compensation would be I’m assuming for the purposes of doing this that we retain the remainder of our picks.

2 – McKinney LB
4 – Nick O’Leary TE
5 – Arie Kouandijo G
5 – Cam Thomas CB
6 – Tyler Varga – You knew I had to do that!

So there are my predictions as we move inside of two weeks to the actual draft.

I would sit tight at 14 and “reach for” Breshard Perriman before I wasted a pick moving up for Cooper. (How come this horse isn’t whinnying anymore when I kick it?)

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The whole trade up thing is if our top brass has a prospect rated quite a bit higher than other prospects. It doesn’t matter if we agree or not.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Then I agree we should get rid of that tarnished brass.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because they ‘might’ have a different opinion on the talent levels that you do?

We might not trade up at all, it’s just another option to spark debate and annoy some people. LOL

Yeah, I’m a noid at the speculation of options….lol

I think we should storm Davie with pitchforks if they trade up. Our ire must be sated!

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Now Armando is saying if we want Devante Parker we have to trade up. lol

Soon, all 250 some odd players will be gone before our 1st pick. This sucks! lol

    LOL @ Mike E

There’s bald eagles already in NJ. This is the first time one has nested in NYC (Staten Island) in 100 years. I saw bald eagles at a reservoir I used to fish at. You probably have them by you too.

I think Perriman is being way overrated because of his great 40 time. I think he is this year’s version of Darrius Heyward Bey.
    *
Disagree 100% with that comparison. He was being talked about late first prior to his 40. I mentioned plenty of times he’s probably the most physically gifted WR in this draft. He’s a physical WR who runs through tackles and accelerates faster than ANYONE out of his breaks. His a really good prospect who needs refinement, but he’s not a similar climber as DHB.
    _____________________________________________
I have not seen Perriman as a 1st rounder until after his pro day work out. I had previously seen him listed as low as a 4th rounder – not that I agree with that either.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have to say this Ken, that’s not really completely logical though. I’ll explain. A lot of players value increased significantly by their performance at the combine. Perriman didn’t perform at the combine, so it’s really no different if you think about it. Think of Perriman’s pro day as his combine, and his rise is just as fair as anyone elses.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Good point.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I know lots of players value increases at the combine or pro days. I am not sure it is a great measuring tool. There are many examples of prospects who posted wow numbers at the combine or pro-days and their stock soars and they bust because they work out great but don’t necessarily translate into great pro players. Darius Heyward Bey comes to mind. Mike Mamula comes to mind. I am concerned Perriman is in that category.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

      Ken,
A few weeks prior to his pro-day there was talk by analysts that he was late 1st early second. I saw other places ranking him as a 4th round prospect, but I didn’t agree w/ there assessments of the player. Now could he move up a bit w/ a good pro day???? Yes, but not a huge leap.

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe we should just sit tight at #14 and draft Tyler Varga since everyone seems to be moving up. LOL

Just got a call from my new rep at the Phins tix office (I’m on their radar cause of you guys). After the hard sell for seasons was over, we got to talking.

He said they expect the 2015 schedule to come out next Thurs…….the time to start thinking Fest date!

Also interesting — best field level seats they have for seasons are in the end zone. Last year when I asked the same Q they were offering on like the ten or twelve. Maybe that is cause of the new lux seats btwn the 30’s on the home side, but then they also created more by expanding closer to the field. You decide.

    Ken,
I understand your concern, but Perriman was a damn good player last year improving from his So. Year after losing his QB Bortles. I watched enough UCF games where I’m sold on him. With that said we all have our own take on players.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I have not seen enough of him except for what I have watched on tape. I think he is a great physical specimen but to me based on what I have seen I like Cooper, White, Parker and Strong better. I would be leery of taking Perriman too high. If we get him in round 2 that’s great but I would not want at 14.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Better than trading next years #1 to move up and take Cooper!

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Believe or not I have just as much comfort with him as I do with taking Parker.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

        Rock:
I disagree. I think the top 2 WRs are ahead of everyone else and are ready to make an impact right away. In fact I think Cooper is ready to play at a high level from Day 1. I don’t think that about Perriman. I think he will find a difficult adjustment at this level. He comes from a smaller school and while he was productive he was no where near as productive as Cooper or even White who played at bigger schools and competition.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

But he is not worth TWO first round picks no matter how “game ready” he is. JMO

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

      Dbolt & Ken,
UCF, that’s the rub right there why Perriman started further back in the early projections. The school doesn’t get as much credit as the SEC, Big Ten WR’s ahead of him.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think the double edge sword for Perriman is Bortles helped put him on the map, but it also had people look at Perriman as a product of Bortles. When you go back and look at his sophomore year he really should’ve been given credit for a lot of Bortles success as he was excellent adjusting to off passes and going up and getting the ball. Deeper review of his games by scouts cleared up this misconception.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It is the rub and I think it is a legit one. UCF has done well in recent years but it is not Alabama or even WVA. The competition is significantly different. Bortles put UCF on the map but his transition last year was not all that great. Both Carr and Bridgewater were significantly better as rookies.

I will say McShay instantaneously threw him up at 14 immediately after his pro day

I like the kid a lot and think he will be a good pro if given the chance. All that said he is a 5th round talent imo. But I do hope we get him in the 5th round. I love the way the kid plays the game. He plays with abandon.

  18. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It’s 4th & 1 from the two yard line. There is 15 seconds left on the clock and the Dolphins need to score a TD here or their season’s dreams come to an end.

Tannehill comes out under center, two WR split right. Miller & Varga in the back field….here we go….HAND OF TO TYLER FUCKING VARGA….He trucks the MLB and is in for the score! Dolphins win Dolphins win TYLER FUCKING VARGA sends the Dolphins into the playoffs.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Ken, does Varga play STs?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Not that I am aware of. I know Yale was very wary of how much they used him because he was such a huge part of their offense I am sure they tried to minimize his exposure on STs. However, no reason why he can’t play them at the next level.

I see way more Torrey Smith in Perriman than Heyward-Bey.
Perriman is probably exactly where Torrey Smith was a few years ago except the value proposition for a WR these days has gone up with the cheapening of defensive rules.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Sssh, don’t rouse the natives, Torrey is known for dropped passes.

A More athletically gifted & physical player than Smith, but refinement needed is similar.

Yeah Torrey is only 6′ 205lb…but has a very nice YPC avg over 16 yards per catch and had 11 TD’s last year on just 49 rec.

In today’s pass happy NFL with dbl teams & press coverages, I want a very physical guy that will fight for the ball and continue fighting once he gets it.

Not bad….I think we need to see if we sign FA Jennings and or a FA OG before the draft.
Then of course I doubt we dbl up on WR or on OL. After losing 2 LB’s & not signing one in FA, I hate to draft one that late and expect anything.

But at least you got 2 big needs covered early on.

  29. D's avatar D says:

To get our target, whomever it might be, pick 3 is only spot it will be almost a guarantee. By pick 4 one of the picks very likely falling. To get either Cooper or White, we need pick 5, and though the likelihood is higher, we still cant compete value-wise with others who may also want to guarantee themselves one of those two or a different pick. To get one of the top 3 it may take pick 10, though i have to admit it kinda gets a little blurry predicting anything that low without the stuff above having not happened yet.

I think therefore earliest we could hope to be trading up to, and be able to find a partner for it would be with St. Louis at 10, and that would likely to be prevent the possibility of Minnesota taking Parker. This will still cost us out 2016 1st. as losing our second this year come at more cost than a 1st next. You also have to treat next year picks at lesser value than current year picks so 14 next year (estimating off our this year pick level) is roughly the value of pick 21 next year (research i found was that future picks are around 80% the value of current year picks). I guess that also could be +/- depending on if teams feel we will finish better this year, or worse.

A lot depends on who is off the board of course, so Mariota off the board by pick 2 lowers the value of the picks as it will take a lot of demand for a trade up out, still i dont think it makes 3 or 5 affordable to us even if he is. This isnt just about pure trade value, because a 14 at 1100 and a next years projected 14 value of 800 would yield 1900, which is more than the 1700 it would cost us to move to 5 and its close to the 2200 it would take for 3. To me the problem really becomes we also have to be out bidding others. Even in best case scenario, Mariota off the board by pick 2, pick 3 may then be off the market or unable to be afforded. Jags probably wouldn’t get a ridiculous offer without the attraction landing a potential franchise QB and then Fowler becomes more valuable to them than any trade would net.

So 3 is a pipe dream, too much competition if Mariota is available, no trade partner if he isnt. 5 has a little merit to its potential, as long as no one is bidding against us for it. !0 has a lot of potential and we could probably even pick up a 3rd round pick this year in change from the deal. We’d also be pretty much have zero competition for the spot outside of a very few teams who would have to give up a helluva lot more to move there.

I hate it but i think we would need a lot of luck to get Cooper or even White. Something like Perriman really shooing up the boards and getting Raiders or Jets to select him instead. Maybe DGB to convince every GM out there he is a choir boy so he moves up above the others. Jets or Raiders going a different route (could definitely see it with Raiders since thier need at DT/DE is strong). but pretty much by pick 6 we should know.

For what its worth, i love Parker, but im not 100% sure id trade next year’s 1st for him. He would be great and at 14 is a no-brainer for me, but i don’t know if id give up more to do it. Cooper if still on the board after 6 is almost a full on yes, lets secure that pick, next years first in a trade with NYG or St. Louis and try to scavenge a 3rd. Done.

I think im also to the point of saying minus getting one of those 3 receivers, stay put is ok but id really try for a trade back, at least a little one and get back our 3rd. I guess i feel if we dont go for a slugger we might achieve same goals with multiple OBP guys (sorry to mix sports metaphors)

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I just don’t see anything, anyone that convinces me to trade up. #14 is a good spot to get a guy that can come in and play day 1. It’s also a good spot to trade down from as last year playoff teams may feel they’re 1 key guy away from advancing farther in the post season play.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think what im saying is im in agreement with you…sorta. I think trading up for Cooper IF its only at the cost of next years 1, and hopefully with a 3rd in chnage this year would easily make me feel its worth it. Not that i wouldn’t feel trading up higher wouldn’t also be good but then the cost to me starts to out-weight the potential in reward. There is a very small window for me that trade up makes sense, but it does really make sense within those parameters.

No, I like his read react skill, he’s good when he’s clean. I worry about him sheeding blockers and working in traffic, getting flushed on runs. He’d be pretty good in coverage too tho.

Reminds of our own Jordan Tripp, who’s a lil bigger.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

He gets off blocks just as good as any LB I’ve seen in this class. Ran a 4.66 at his pro day.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

        Zach Vigil, Utah State

At linebacker you can have all the measurable in the world, but at the end of the day it means nothing if you don’t produce and Zach Vigil produced more last season than any other inside linebacker in the draft. His performance was consistent week in and week out with two negatively-graded games in 15 weeks.

When you think of a small school linebacker with big production getting little draft buzz it’s easy to assume that he’s a poor athlete, but that’s not the case with Vigil. His pro day numbers put him right around the inside linebacker average for almost all the events compared to historical combine figures. When you watch his tape, though, his coordination and instincts both jump out as above average.

The middle linebacker graded well above average rushing the passer, in coverage, and against the run. Vigil’s 76 total stops were the second most in the draft class and his 36 total pressures were the second most as well. He was also a very reliable tackler missing just 12 all year compared to 131 combined solos and assists.

Signature Stat: Vigil had a 12.9 Run Stop Percentage last season, but that number jumped to 14.3% against the Power 5 schools he faced.

    FB Tyler Varga

    School: Yale

    2014 stats: 1,423 rushing yards, 22 touchdowns

    Projected round: 5-6

Why I like him: Varga is a throwback to when a tailback/fullback combo was valued in the NFL. Varga is a bit slow to be a tailback, but more athletic than your average fullback. He also had tremendous production at Yale last season. Most teams won’t know what to do with Varga, because he doesn’t have a natural position. That is why he will be drafted late. But a smart team with a smart coaching staff will take the value of just adding a heady and tough football player to the roster and figure out where he fits in later.

It’s kind of ironic that some of you are willing to take a chance on a guy with red flags both on and off the field with our 1st round pick, but scoff at the idea of trading up for a guy say like Amari Copper who has no red flags, has been super productive and is considered the most game ready WR coming out of college. It’s about the player and production, not draft picks and boom or bust consequences.

This for a team with win now expectations or major regime change implications. Doesn’t make any sense to me.

The key to one of the big # WR’s being there will hinge on what Tennesee does IMO. If they draft or trade the pick and Mariotta gets picked there, then OAK may have a decision to make if Williams or Fowler gets pushed down to them. If that happens then Parker may be available at 14.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Boo on Parker, not physical enough for me.
Minnesota will look at him with their pick. What better thing for him, than to pair him back with Teddy.

  42. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Brian, my best case scenario is getting DGB or Perriman in the 20’s on a trade down. I’ll have my big physical WR. Then we can go OG/OT, CB, LB in the 2nd.

  43. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

“It’s kind of ironic that some of you are willing to take a chance on a guy with red flags both on and off the field with our 1st round pick, but scoff at the idea of trading up for a guy say like Amari Copper who has no red flags, has been super productive and is considered the most game ready WR coming out of college. It’s about the player and production, not draft picks and boom or bust consequences. This for a team with win now expectations or major regime change implications. Doesn’t make any sense to me.”

Seems to me we did this exact thing with a DE two years ago…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what I was getting at and we’re still dealing with it even though in 2013 we weren’t in win now or else mode. Ross doesn’t want to see another 7-9 or 8-8 but we’re almost there type season. Also Jeff Ireland the king of drafting developmental players is no longer here.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I think we were in win now mode, as Ireland was fired after the 2013 season. Philbin survived by the skin of his teeth.

  44. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim, they’re all good scenarios…relax. Just have to hope that we finally have a FO that knows more than us and gets it right whichever way they go…lol

    GDP,
I have a feeling we may trade with the Giants if Cooper or Parker is there at 9, although less likely with Parker. There are three teams between 10 and 13 that would scoop one or both of them up before we pick at 14.

    LMFAO!!! Is that true? 🙂

  48. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brian, how were we in win now mode in 2013 with a 2nd year QB and trading up for a DE coming off of shoulder surgery and likely not much of an impact his rookie season? Ireland spent like he was doing that but it was way too hasty. That team wasn’t ready to win. We were coming off of a 7-9 season. In hindsight he signed the wrong players and we got rid of all of them this offseason. Yeah make the playoffs was the hope, but the expectations are bigger this year by a lot.

Again, you don’t sign Suh to stay the course and stay in developmental mode, we have enough players already like that. We need immediate impact. I don’t think we’re 4-5 players who may need some time away, we’re a couple of special type players away from making the playoffs and go from there. That’s how I view it and I think the writing is on the wall.

wow, draft talk. you guys are worse then a nagging wife that wont stop harping on the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over

  50. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think we have a lot of holes, we have wants to upgrade.

  51. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brian, Philbin was not almost fired after his 2nd season. He went 7-9 with a rookie QB and then 8-8 with Ireland’s spending spree that in hindsight wasn’t very good. Philbin was maybe almost fired after last year with another late season collapse. That’s why 2015 is very different than 2013. Tannehill is in his 4th season now and Suh is in his prime in his 6th along with other good players we have. We’re in make the playoffs or else mode now.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I distinctly remember reading multiple reports about Philbin having to have an end of the season meeting with Ross and having to make a case why he should be the coach the following season.

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

        From Mike E?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ross was asking him about the state of the team. Ireland was fired because the players he added didn’t make enough impact to match the investment and the record and tape proved it. Ross found this out from many advisers and Philbin likely reiterated it.

Look at it from an after the fact view as opposed to what you might of thought when we did it. I was on board with it but after further review – Jordan, Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Ellerbe and Wheeler did not pay off per their investment.

  53. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

After the 2008 11-5 season and our last playoff appearance, Ireland’s teams once we started to build the team through his vision, went 7-9, 7-9, 6-10, 7-9 and 8-8. That’s a 5 year body of work where he produced no winners. Philbin inherited that and has gone 7-9, 8-8 and 8-8. Yet he gets viewed as a guy who’s mediocre with how many special players? That’s how you win, with players who make game changing plays.

  54. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I’ll agree to a trade up if we give up Philbin & one of our 5th round picks to get to the 9 hole.
The Giants can make him asst HC until they fire Coughlin once and for all after another bad year.

I would love to get Perriman and maybe the thinking is swinging towards him but I suspect our front office really loves Cooper.

    Tim,

Of course he was asking him about the state of the team- it was an end of the year meeting! It was also reported that he was asked to make his case as to why he should continue coaching the team. After going 15-17, his job was in some sort of jeopardy, only Ross knows that. You can’t just say we didn’t have enough “special players”. It’s the coaches job to get the most out of the players too, not that they are absolved at all.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In 2013 I thought we were a border line team – 8-8 to 10-6. I felt the same way last year.

We’re trying to change that by adding the 6th year Suh and developing the 4th year Tannehill. 2015 is a crucial season for this franchise.

  59. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Mets win again! 8-3 baby!

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Son, I think Cooper will be special even on a bad team. That kid is good. I’ve said this before, he’s Landry 2.0. Instead of 5-11 205 he’s 6-1 210 and he’s faster with more physical ability. Stills 6-0 195 is a young, fast WR who has proven he can play in this league over 2 seasons at 23 years of age in a few days. Grow these guys with Tanny and off we go. 🙂

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Sooo, you’ve finally come around to Tanny? 😉

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

GD, when have I been anti-Tanny? I love his ascension after 3 years and feel he needs guys who work on their game, not guys who need to be looked after. He can also get better as a passer but we have a unique threat with him as a runner as well. He’s a gifted athlete and becoming a better QB. 🙂

The key is the org believes in him. He’s our QB and he will be for years to come unless something unexpected happens. I doubt it.

I have him pegged for 33 TD and 9 INT 4,500+ yards this year with 5-6 fumbles and 3-4 losses. It happens when you handle the ball a thousand times and are a major factor in the offense. I think that’s where he’s headed. He doesn’t just throw it because you want it. He throws to what’s open. He’s more Montana-like than Marino or Luck who thought/think they can throw it anywhere.

Sure, because it’s all about who’s going to be there at that pick. I know you love Gurley, but I just can’t se it. If Scherff or La’el Collins are there, AND Parker is there, that would be a tough pick for us.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

If Parker is gone (and we do in fact stay at 14), then I really want Gurley. The “experts” keep saying that we need a number one WR, but I don’t think that we necessarily do in this offense, at least right now. We have Landry, Stills, and Matthews. If we can pick up someone in the 2nd we should be fine.
