DAY 3 of the NFL Draft

DRAFT DAY 3 WRAP UP

DolphinsLogo2

The Dolphins went DB crazy on Day 3.

But they also made a couple of moves that should make the “we need to run the ball” enthusiasts happy.

There were no Trade Ups or Trade Downs in Day 3.

In the 4th Round with the 114th pick the Dolphins selected the big guy you’ve been waiting for.

Jamil Douglas

Jamil Douglas is a 6’4, 304 pound offensive guard and is said to be a good fit in a zone blocking scheme.

Then the 5th round frenzy began!

With their first pick in the 5th round, #145, the Dolphins selected Good Ole’ Bobby McCain, a 5’9 CB from Memphis.  Every time you say his name, you can also hear the sound of a harmonica playing…try it!

Bobby McCain

Just 4 picks later, with the 149th pick of the NFL draft, the Dolphins drafted what some are describing as a steal.  The very productive Jay Ajayi is now a Miami Dolphin!

Jay Ajayi can do it all:  Run, Catch and Block!

Jay Ajayi

^^^^^^^

Gonna run you over!!!

The Dolphins had back to back picks in the 5th.  So with the very next pick, the Dolphins took their 2nd DB of the draft.

With the 150th pick of the NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected Cedric Thompson, a free safety from Minnesota.

Cedric Thompson

Think the Dolphins are done at DB?  NOPE!

Well, maybe nope…

With their final pick of the 5th round and final pick of the Draft, the Dolphins selected Tony Lippett, the wide receiver/cornerback.

Lippett started games at Michigan State at both WR and CB.  Many scouts project him as a CB in the NFL.

This pick might take time to develop.  Trust me this pic is an interception return…

Nebraska v Michigan State

LET’S GO 2015!

I LIKED most of the picks as far as they went. With the last pick I would have gone for the best O-Lineman available. Here’s hoping Lippett has a long and productive career as a Dolphin.

awful considerate of Hickey to finish up early this year so I can grab a shower and get to the Derby party. i’m very happy with our haul of draft talent. Our coaches have a lot to work with to fix last year’s problems. These new guys should get us into the playoffs. Then we see what we need to get to the Super Bowl and next year we get that. We are needing fewer and fewer desperation picks and can focus more and more on BPA / SuperStars. Next year maybe we trade up and go get that top 5 super stud MLB.
Go Carpe Diem or Dortmund so i can make me some money tonight!!!

  25. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

So I’ve had some time absorb and contemplate this draft:

    1. Context = last year we were 5-4 with Albert at LT with two excruciating losses (GB and Det.)

    2. I think those 9 games are the baseline our front office is working from. When Albert went down, I vividly remember many on the blog stating something along the lines of “there goes the season”….

    3. This draft addressed what we needed to do better on both sides of the ball in the GB and Det games (would have put us at 7-2… even with a 3-4 finish we’d have been 10-6).

So, while WE may have been thinking of the last 7 games when looking at the draft and FA, it seems the F.O. is focusing on how close we were to being great before Albert went down.

    Thus the moves…
-Suh and Phillips since the old DL broke down (why go back to it when it didn’t work)
-INTENSE competition at CB (we got something like 10 guys now competing for those spots lol)
-Wheeler WON’T be covering anybody on the last play OR blaming the coaches
-WR group that RARELY drops passes and Ajayi to convert the 3rd downs.

I’m not saying that everything is perfect… but it this makes our draft of FA “fit”

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We’re a better team, I just hope the O-line isn’t our achilles heel. That’s my biggest fear.

  26. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Fuck

    Nick OLeary to the bills

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    LT Albert/James/Linkenbach
    LG Thomas/Douglas/McClendon
    C Pouncey/Walton/Brenner (also backup guards)
    RG Turner/Asper/McClendon
    RT James/Fox/Linkenbach

I feel Linkenbach is our new Garner. He has played every position on the OL in his career.

A few more UDFAs and maybe a last minute vet should fill out the TC roster.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      What if Albert isn’t ready?

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

        What if he is? 🙂

Signs point to yes. If he’s not we still will have a better OL than last year by virtue of Pouncey moving back to Center..and that doesn’t consider that Thomas, Turner, and Douglas likely represent a great shot at being better than Thomas (of 2014) and Colledge.

I bet we still add a vet tbh, but I don’t think it’s all that dire either. I get your fear (that the OL is our achilles heal) and it’s a rational one. I just think signs point to yes. 🙂

  30. Phindog's avatar phindog says:

What analysts said Ajayi lacked instincts ? Foolish !!

  31. D's avatar D says:

I think if Thomas finally gets to stay at LG you guys change your tone about him. That’s his ideal spot and I have been saying this since they drafted him. Turner could easily be our RG, either one could be backed up or supplanted by Douglas. We will see but I feel OK about our OL. Not great but OK

    • Phindog's avatar phindog says:

      Stop making sense !!!

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I think so too. I am tired of the discussion so I haven’t defended him in awhile, but I think he was a lot better this year even with being forced out to tackle, and he’s not nearly as inept as say…Jonathan Martin was.

  32. Phindog's avatar phindog says:

    D..
AssDoggie is probably the last nickname I would have guessed you went by… LOL!!!!

  33. D's avatar D says:

The Christmas ham just got drafted

  34. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Thomas, Turner and Douglas fighting for starting spots at OG is a good thing

    Let’s hope Albert is healthy

  35. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, James goes to LT and Fox to RT if Albert isn’t ready. But it seems like he’ll be ready sooner than later.

Our worries about the OL are too 2014 oriented. We were coming off of the 2013 Martin/Incognito/Jerry nonsense. We also dealt with multiple injuries in 2014 and we used basically 9-10 OL during the season. I think 2015 we have a better idea of what to do with Hickey, Lazor and Benton all in their 2nd seasons.

    Again:
    LT Albert/James/Linkenbach
    LG Thomas/Douglas/McClendon
    C Pouncey/Walton/Brenner (also backup guards)
    RG Turner/Asper/McClendon
    RT James/Fox/Linkenbach

I feel Linkenbach is our new Garner. He has played every position on the OL in his career.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

thomas as a starter scares the hell out of me. Maybe LG is his position which what everyone thought he should play but the coaches didn’t put him there.

I bet we’re not done with bringing in more vet guards.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you look at what happened last year on the OL, Thomas not playing at all as a rookie due to shoulder surgery but in his 2nd year he served as a guard for 2-3 games and a RT for like 6-7. He got thrown into the mix in his 2nd season at multiple positions out of necessity.

We have no idea what he’ll be as a LG in his 3rd season. Especially under Benton.

  36. rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

    Has Hickey been drafted yet?
I would like to bring him in as UDFA.

  37. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Holliman still on the board too

    Ifo, Holliman, Anthony Harris

Some DBs not doing so well today

  38. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I thought Ajayi was injured now, I didn’t realize it was from 2011. He’s been great since then, so even if we only get 4 or 5 yrs out of him we got a steal. This is one of the gambles I was talking about with having 4 picks in the 5th, no way did I want to trade any of them to move up.

We really got some good depth in this draft, a possible WR starter (don’t really care if he starts or not, as he’s going to get plenty of chances to shine 50 catches seems about right), an Olineman that’s going to start at some point in the next yr or 2 (and he can play tackle, if Alberts isn’t ready), an RB that will be in the rotation with Miller 1A and 1B, much needed depth at DB (Grimes getting up there and FAs cost too much).

I thought we were paper thin going into the draft, but now I’d say with all the acquisitions in FA and the draft picks I think we’re pretty balanced top to bottom. I don’t care about LB too much, because all 3 aren’t 3 down players and we have enough depth to man the position (no big stars, but guys that can get the job done).

Parker and Ajayi or Gurley? Either way works for me, the NFL of today says you take the WR and not the RB in the 1st.

  39. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  40. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tim, not so fast with Fox at RT, if Alberts isn’t ready. We have lots of other options, Turner played well at RT last yr at the end, Douglas can also plat tackle. We’ll just have to see how things play out in camp.

Did anyone mention we had 100% attendance for the voluntary offseason program 😛

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All that is possible for this extremely void of OL talent ridden team. LOL

I think we kind of want to work guys at specific positions this year and secure the top 5 and go from there.

This is the last pick I think Collins has any shot at. Saints will know the mist about that situation

  44. D's avatar D says:

I’d invite Nick Marshall as an UDFA or Devin Gardner either one

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Parker was the first WR I looked into back in Jan and Feb and came away thinking White and Cooper were better. My main issue with him was he did a lot of one foot in stuff which is the college rule. Maybe I shouldn’t have knocked him for that because that was the game he played. But the kid makes plays – he has elite skills. I’m excited!

    • D's avatar D says:

Did you look where the ball was thrown to him on those plays. I saw call placement that only allowed for one foot. I also saw him on crossing routes and jump balls fight like anquan boldin he remind me a little of a cross between aj green an boldin exactly what we need for red zone production but speed for between the 20’s

  53. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So how do you guys feel about Jordan Phillips? I like him. I think working behind Suh and Mitchell will motivate him. The guy has sick size and athletic ability. There are not many guys on the planet who are 6-5 330 who run 5.17 40s, lift 28 reps with big arms at almost 35″.

I don’t mind a classic boom or bust in the 2nd round. I heard him on a radio interview. Smart guy and doesn’t come off as lazy to me. His back issue might have played a role in that.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I’m a little nervous about the back Tim. He had surgery a few years ago, and that’s not good for someone his size. I read the phrase ‘chronic back problem”, which kind of scares me.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll see. Odrick had the same rep with a piece of metal in his leg, went down his rookie year in game one, then played every game for 4 more seasons.

NFL teams take care of their investments.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I get that, but I followed Odrick in college- he didn’t have the injury rep. A back injury is MUCH different from a leg injury.

Tons of competition with what caliber player though? Unless Dallas Thomas has significantly improved, I don’t want to see that. Billy Turner has potential, maybe he’s there, I hope so. Albert Douglas Pouncey Turner James

    Could be tough and nasty

I like that lineup. Douglas and Pouncey are also agile and can pull and pop ppl 5-6 yds out.

No matter who plays they’ll practice against Suh and should be pretty pissed off.

A 4th round rookie and turner who hasn’t played a snap at guard at pros. I think I’m a little worried. We can’t be done with the o-line.

Trypod I had 3 mint juleps as the girls i was with thought theirs was too nasty after one sip.
They are nasty, but I took one for the team. or 3 actually. The Jack and coke warm-ups helped.
thank god Dortmund hung on to finish third so i did not lose ALL my money.

I watched the Finsiders interview with Dion Sims and that guy looks like he’s in great shape. I still remember the block he made against the Jets, Calvin Pace was on his way to destroying Tannehill and Dion rushed to pick him up and absolutely stonewalled Pace from a tough angle. That’s all I needed to know about Sims as a football player.

Yeah he’s a big dude and he’s strong and can block but he’s also athletic and can catch and make plays. He knows his role will expand this year with the departure of Clay and has spent the offseason focused on preparing for that. He also respects Cameron’s game and recognized he’s also a great athlete and former basketball player.

    Sleeper = Dion Sims

Look at our roster and not just the draft. Look at the youth that are expected to make an impact this year. I feel like this team still has 4 drafts in the making mixed with some seasoned vets. It starts with Tannehill in 2012. We’re still feeding off of 3 drafts and we just added one.

The addition of Suh changed our direction. This team wants to win now.

The fight was predictable but disappointing. I thought Manny was going to go into overdrive at some point(especially after round 5) but he could never get past Mayweather’s defense. Mayweather has earned his spot as the best. The guy is dominant.

If you read the very bottom paragraphs, it gives some interesting stats on pick counts per conferences and schools.
