DAY 3 of the NFL Draft

DRAFT DAY 3 WRAP UP

DolphinsLogo2

The Dolphins went DB crazy on Day 3.

But they also made a couple of moves that should make the “we need to run the ball” enthusiasts happy.

There were no Trade Ups or Trade Downs in Day 3.

In the 4th Round with the 114th pick the Dolphins selected the big guy you’ve been waiting for.

Jamil Douglas

Jamil Douglas is a 6’4, 304 pound offensive guard and is said to be a good fit in a zone blocking scheme.

Then the 5th round frenzy began!

With their first pick in the 5th round, #145, the Dolphins selected Good Ole’ Bobby McCain, a 5’9 CB from Memphis.  Every time you say his name, you can also hear the sound of a harmonica playing…try it!

Bobby McCain

Just 4 picks later, with the 149th pick of the NFL draft, the Dolphins drafted what some are describing as a steal.  The very productive Jay Ajayi is now a Miami Dolphin!

Jay Ajayi can do it all:  Run, Catch and Block!

Jay Ajayi

^^^^^^^

Gonna run you over!!!

The Dolphins had back to back picks in the 5th.  So with the very next pick, the Dolphins took their 2nd DB of the draft.

With the 150th pick of the NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected Cedric Thompson, a free safety from Minnesota.

Cedric Thompson

Think the Dolphins are done at DB?  NOPE!

Well, maybe nope…

With their final pick of the 5th round and final pick of the Draft, the Dolphins selected Tony Lippett, the wide receiver/cornerback.

Lippett started games at Michigan State at both WR and CB.  Many scouts project him as a CB in the NFL.

This pick might take time to develop.  Trust me this pic is an interception return…

Nebraska v Michigan State

LET’S GO 2015!

What’s up FUers? Better day yesterday than Friday. I still don’t get nor like the Jordan Phillips pick but overall that seems to me as the only blemish but it’s potentially a big one because we could have had Fisher or Perriman there instead. I am still having a hard time wrapping my head around that pick.

    • D's avatar D says:

ken its a good player, I understand the position pick being a head scratcher but if the had ideas for adding a DT then he was great value. Perryman was simply someone they were not that impressed with. They did their homework on him multiple interviews and still passed. Fisher is the same deal. They wanted an OG prospect and felt the wouldn’t get versatility from him that they could play him there. I’m sure they had their reasons and at the end of the day Phillips was BPA

In response to your post to me about Phillips above. I didn’t see Phillips as BPA in that position nor a pick based on need. I thought it was a reach on a position we are relatively deep at. Phillips has an injury history and bad motor issues. I would have been happier taking Jalen Strong or Maxx Williams in round 2 before we took Phillips. I just don’t like the pick. It didn’t fit a need and I don’t see it as BPA. Obviously it’s not my draft board so who knows but Hulk was very angry over that pick.

  21. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Ken everybody certainly understands your take on the Phillips pick, but they really wanted him after they had him down here and he met the DL coach. They think he has a very high ceiling and that new DL coach we have is a no nonsense role model that made the kid want to be a better guy.
We did get badly gashed in the run game last year, and this guy will eat up blockers so Suh can stuff the RBs. We have to stop LeSean twice and Chris Ivory ran over us also last year.

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

You need an extra kicker and punter so you don’t overwork your real guys and come up with a pulled hammy or quad. With all the practice that the special team return teams need, it is a lot of work for one leg. It’s a long way from here to September.

We put our 2nd into what looks to be a run-stuffing DT.
We brought in a bunch of DBs.
We didn’t even touch LB…..where we seem to need a starter.

Thinking maybe with Suh and now a stump in the middle…….they are thinking our true base D is the nickel. And if you can stop them from running btwn the tackles with just your DL….why not?

Have no doubt we want LBs, but not using one of those five third day picks on one is still curious. Maybe we trade or bring in a cap cut from another team, but it just might mean that part of what we paid for in Suh is not having to have a third LB on the field most of the time.

  30. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

After it’s all said and done I don’t have an issue with Jordan Phillips, but at the time with our need at OG I was thinking are you kiddin’ me.

We lost 2 DTs in FA, so we did have a need for a DT. Looking at his tape he’s not impressive and an underachiever, but I think his game translates to the NFL, because he has an NFL body and is a space eater/double teamed type of player. Hickey said, when watching his tape you have to think about what his assignment was on the play. He does show flashes at times that he can be great. I think at worst we have a solid run stuffer.

The gems on day 3, added to what was done in FA, gives me hope that we’ll be a playoff team, and if not it wasn’t because of the talent on the field. What more can you ask for in one off-season where so much change took place? In the past we’ve all said they can’t fix everything in one off-season, but I think they pretty much have.

    Good morning guys.
I was busy much of the day yesterday but saw on Twitter some of the names the Fins were signing out of the UDFA pool and saw Mike Hull & Zach Vigil were among them. Good stuff and see why the Fins weren’t overly concerned about LB depth (front office must have felt ok about the starters at least and were comfortable taking the developmental guys who would be backups anyway). I kept asking around (Steve CCNV) if people had seen him often or if they had links to video on Vigil cause it was hard to come by for me. He is a fast LB. Hull must have scared people with his injuries but he’s got the potential to be a very good one. On talent alone (without discounting for injury risk), he’s better than Tripp/McCain.

Bat — Philips was a head scratcher. I’m figuring it means we don’t have to worry about the third starting LB much.

  47. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I still don’t get the hate on the Phillips pick. He was a 1st or 2nd rd prospect all along. The guy is massive, powerful and athletic.

This idea he isn’t always motivated is said about a lot of big men every year and the talented ones usually pan out anyway. Let’s give the kid a chance as opposed to passing judgement on him before he even puts on a Dolphins uniform. He should help us in run defense right away while we develops the rest of his game.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

One of his issues in college was he played too many downs. OU must’ve been thin on the Dline.

When we look at almost every other position we take into account how the player’s game translates to the NFL, so the same thing should be done with Phillips.

I think our biggest issue with him was we took him instead of taking a OG or ILB, then it was compounded by his tape.

Bottomline is the D coaches were ecstatic with the pick.

  48. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Getting Douglas in the 4th and Ajayi in the 5th went a long way for missing our 3rd. I’ve never seen a Fins draft before where I felt every player taken had the chance to be special (since last yr probably 😛 ), but all kidding aside I really like this draft class.

In the future we should try to get multiple 5ths, what a difference that makes. At least this yr the guys available have a chance to be more than JAGs.

  49. bat's avatar bat says:

Stanger …Maybe Phillips will surprise me and play nearer to his potential and physical gifts. He’s shown no desire to do so thus far.

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I like the Phillips pick, because in theory, he was a good pick in the 2nd RD, a 1st RD value. I don’t like that they left Jake Fisher and Ali Marpet on the board, especially with acquiring Suh for $1B this offseason. Not sure why you can’t comprehend that.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe we didn’t have a high grade of Fisher and Marpet.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Possibly, but it seemed like other teams did, and didn’t have a high grade on Phillips. We’ll find out who was right, and whether they dropped the ball big time on the O-line.

  51. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Bat, it goes like this you take Phillips and the math looks like this
    Fat + lazy x athletic, physical, smart ÷ √ Suh = Monster

  52. bat's avatar bat says:

“The guy is massive, powerful and athletic.”

Tim …But he couldn’t, or wouldn’t stay in shape. Almost every scouting report on him references him getting gassed in games or giving up on his pass rush if he didn’t get by with his initial move …This baby comes wrapped in red flag swaddling clothes …IMO

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

How much will we ask him to do? Do we need him to apply pass rush or just stop the run? Will he be a part of the nickel or dime packages?

  53. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

It’s not the draft i would have done but the Fins did pick up some quality guys and people I had in my value mix per position (Douglas at OL; Cedric in the secondary; Hull, Vigil, & Luc for LB).

Only 2-3 teams who stood out to me (made me go wowzers) drafting talent/need with good risk/reward.
Ravens (outstanding); Steelers as well as Packers stood out.

Team that left me wondering wtf was the Giants…talk about wierd draft, hope it works out for them.

The Niners took the all potential club (Eli Harold, DeAndre Smelter, Blake Bell, Trenton Brown, Rory Anderson) lol.

Going back to the Dolphins and particularly the AFC East, LOL @ Patriots draft as well as Jets & Bills. They took about 2 players I liked (Jets/Bills) but also made a couple head scratch picks based on value where taken. Comparatively, I think the Fins drafted the best out of the AFC East teams and not because I’m a Fins fan. I thought the Fins draft was ‘safe’ and some guys needing development were taken but they are solid fins. Hickey continues to impress with his UDFA signings. This guy makes Ireland’s acorns look like cow dung.

  54. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bat, like I said we’ve seen reports on big men like that for years and many times they mature and become very good pros. Let’s hope that’s the case with Phillips. The one thing we can’t deny is he has the talent to be very good.

  55. D's avatar D says:

I’ll say I like jets dratca lot too unfortunately for us. They did really well but they also had higher round picks so its expected theirs should look good. I think ours us more exciting and engrossing. We have a bunch of guys who are going to gave to earn spots. Hungry driven guys who are going to hopefully scratch and claw to stay on the team. I like our UDFA guys and would expect at least two of the lbers to make the 53 so that’s pretty exciting too.

I think one thing we all have to understand us you have to draft people worth their projection and if we passed on guys then they were not the right value and like had as much chance of starting next year as the UDFAs. There is always next year which I think we forget. We may find our starter then can’t fill every position every year

  56. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My 3 biggest issues coming into the draft were:
would we draft an OG that could compete for a starting job.
would we have a team that was paper thin, one injury (Suh) away from our season being over.
would we get firepower on O that would allow us to compete with the cheats in a high scoring game.

None of these issues/concerns are really issues to me any longer.

Interesting enough, the Bucaneers did a “EH” thing as well in the same RD miami did with Phillips when TB took PSU OT Donovan Smith at 34 overall.

There were two moments in the draft where i went “GRRRRRRRRRRRRR” and that was when the fucking Kendricks in front of the Fins and also when the Bears drafted Amos a few picks before Miami had a ton of 5th rounders lol.

Mike E, I’m not as concerned about the OL as others because I do believe in development and young players taking the next step. I also don’t think Fox is bad so we have depth. I also believe a lot of our guys in their 2nd season under Benton and his scheme can’t be overlooked.

I like the Cedric pick. Saw him when i watched video of Brock Vereen last year.

  64. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike, I said at worst he’s Soliai. Phillips is a lot more athletic. The point was we had issues stopping the run last yr, and this pick should take care of that (along with Suh).

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Also our division runs it well so we have to match our opponents. Our run defense should be a lot better. A healthy Misi could help that too so let’s hope he has his best season ever! 🙂

  65. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Tim,

Same here as my concern was with only 1 OG spot in general.

I firmly believe Turner can win one of the OG spots and I’m at the point with Dallas that he probably will be just a jack of all trades swing OL who will line up where needed based on emergency (ala the new Garner).

As far as the injury to Albert and his recovery or future medical risk, contrary to most people here, I feel comfortable with Thomas at RT & James at LT. I think Thomas at this point has better prospects at OT than OG but that’s just an opinion i guess. People only remember the bad plays when it comes to Thomas but reality is when you are doing fine 65 out of 70 snaps, that’s success. Really the bad came against NFL elite DE and by elite I mean top 5 edge rushers and that’s not anything to be ashamed of.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed but Thomas is going to work at LG for now and we didn’t see him play there much last year. Turner only played a bit in the last game but coaches and players including Pouncey see great potential in him. Also Douglas fits what we do on the OL so we’ve got some more competition at guard.

Our OL will look a bit different this year so I don’t focus on last year where we had to use basically all of our guys in patchwork fashion due to injuries. Sure that could happen again but that was kind of an anomaly. I think/hope we’ll find our best 5 this year and have solid depth when needed. There were moments last year when the OL looked good. Let’s hope they get better and are more consistent this season. We do have talent.

  66. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Our FO sees Lippett as a CB, but I wonder if they’re going to consider using him as a redzone WR? The redzone package could be Parker, Cameron, Lippett, Stills, and Jennings/Landry/Ajayi. Could be special.

One thing that I do like about Hickey & Tannenbaum is that they came from organizations that emphasized OL/DL play and specifically DL.

If you want to dominate, you need a rotation of guys who can grind because it’s a very physical position and people get tired throughout the game. Got to throw everything at an OL and make them work all 4 quarters hoping they break down.

Going back to the OL thought in this draft, OT isn’t pressing need and OG ranks lower in team value ANYWHERE in the NFL comparativiely to DT.

Like you’ve said many times, good GMs find guards in the mid and late rounds, anyone can draft guys in the 1st round.

  70. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

Whoever isn’t worried about O-line should be. It wasn’t good when Dallas Thomas played. Billy Turner is a ?. Suh should play 2 ways this season, DT and OG. Earn his billion dollar contract

Jordan Phillips & Suh have something in common, LOL….
    TONGUE SWAG!

  72. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We almost lost to the jets on the Monday Nighter, because of the run D, and the reason we did lose the finale was, because we brought guys up to stop the run. That won’t happen this yr.

  73. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    LMAO

You’d think Phillips was an UG TE or something? 😉

No shit. If you can’t be jazzed up and excited about how this team is constituted right now then I can’t help you. I’ll be with the ones loving this shit. Time to roll.

  74. bat's avatar bat says:

Mike … LOL .. Yes, that’s it … Jordan Phillips is the catalyst .. The final piece to the puzzle that will unleash Suh’s incredible ability to raise a team to a championship by sheer force of his will …lol

Suh also gets suspended from time to time, so…

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We can’t forget that last year we knew the transformation on the OL wasn’t going to be a seamless. OL needs chemistry and we didn’t really have a chance for that last year with everything that went on. I think we have a better chance to start off with more continuity this year.

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We officially have a new whipping boy. LOL

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

No doubt. You have a big contract and you are in the cross hairs right their with everyone who either owns the team or is in the FO and your name is known.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        I’m talking about Phillips.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Really you think Suh is whipping boy Stanger? Sorry if I find that absurd, but I do. Accountable and Whipping Boy are two totally different concepts.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Based on the stream thread thought you were going Suh, but based on the reports of not living up to potential…….I’m all for close scrutiny on Phillips.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And Jahn — not to all, but Tanny has certainly been a whipping boy. So don’t find the thought that absurd.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I find that absurd too. I’m all about calling out absurdity when I see it. LOL…Yeah, he only threw for 30 TDs a 2-1 TD to INT ratio, 65% completion, mid 90s rating, and 4k yards. Yeah ok…we’re definitely entitled as a fan base to bitch about a QB who does that. LOL!!!!

  78. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Mike E,
Yea the OL wasn’t terrible because of Thomas. James was wearing down late in the season and people were going by him at the same rate they were going by Thomas from the other side of the OL. Pouncey had his brain fart moments at RG and LG was a problem once Colledge was dazed and confused with migraines.

  79. bat's avatar bat says:

Son … People find reasons to get jazzed up and excited at this time every year .. Then the team goes out and wins 7 or 8 games .. I’ll keep my excitement in reserve, to be deployed at a more opportune moment .. lol

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

People find reasons to get negative and caustic at this time every year. I’ll keep my negativity in reserve to be deployed at a more opportune moment. 🙂

Ah…the universe feels right just about now.

  80. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I’m not worried about the OL. Douglas has starter potential. Turner does too. Folks will say that’s a “question mark” but that’s every player before he has a chance to prove himself. All I know is that we get better at LT because Albert is coming back. We then get better at RT because James goes back to the place he excelled last year. We get better at center because pouncey is way better at center than guard. We get better or stay the same at guard because /turner/thomas/douglas/fox/college are either the same guys who’ve started their before or are better.

We get better all around because Benton is in his 2nd year and he knows wtf he’s doing on the OL.

In the end this is all about the 2nd round choice, and hell if ANYONE knows Ali Marpet the D3 king is going to be better for the team than Phillips is. Collins was never an option for any team. This really isn’t such a travesty, it’s just that we can’t get through the draft without the gnashing of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. It’s in our nature. LOL…

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

One thought I came out of this draft with is that they have faith that Turner will be a starter.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Every team in the NFL relies on “question mark”s every year. The questions are more ours then they are the coaches though. The coaches have more information than we do. In short, agreed. It seem apparent Benton (one of the all time best) thinks our current “question marks” can get it done.

    James, Turner, Fede
    Phillips, Douglas

When you do the math that’s a third of Hickey’s Dolphin draft picks on Linemen. 5/15

Y’all begrudge Hickey his first DT, shame on you, DT’s are job savers.

Because while they’re trying to sidestep those guys Olivier Vernon and Cam Wake will be lining them up in the crosshairs.

Jahn … LOL ..We are the yin and yang of fandom …

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bat – I’m not down on the team by any means, but am I fantasizing that we’re great right now, hell no. I’d like is to change our philosophy on offense though, and run Ajayi over some defenses, that is, if our O-line is up to the task. We’ll see.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Miller had a very good year but I also hope we commit more to the running game and I love the addition of Ajayi. That helps the entire offense and especially the OL because it allows them to move forward and not sit on their heels all game.

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jahn, Turner is given the question mark as a 2014 3rd pick who had a nagging turf toe injury and barely played yet a 2015 2nd rd draft pick at guard would have been considered the solution. LOL

Turner is healthy now, he played some in the last game. Let’s take it from there.

  86. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Mike E,

For what it’s worth, I think Jamil Douglas can beat out Thomas at OG. I don’t know about his pass blocking abilities but Douglas has proven himself in run game. He’s got a strong lower body like Turner & has powerful core base like Turner. Douglas went from LG to LT during his JR to SR year.

This a note from August 2014 discussing his strength:
08/06/14 – Ranking the Top 20 ‘Freaks’ in college football for 2014: 16. Jamil Douglas, OT, Arizona State Sun Devils…A former high school tight end, who weighed 260 pounds as a freshman four years ago, Douglas has blossomed into a standout for the Sun Devils and will become a three-year starter this fall. Now, at 6-4 and 301 pounds, he power cleans 385 pounds, squats 565 and has a body fat measurement in the teens, according to ASU coaches. – Bruce Feldman, FOX Sports

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I’d make a small wager that our starting lineup goes Albert-Douglas-Pouncey (Pro Bowlers on either side of the rookie)-Turner-James (high level players on either side of the kid who is a “question mark”).

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s good hear. I don’t know anything about that kid, TBH

  87. bat's avatar bat says:

    Son … I hadn’t seen the pic before I posted ..Nice …lol

  88. bat's avatar bat says:

Mike … I’m not down on the team either. …Well except for Bazooka Joe and Cautious Kevin Coyle ..lol.. I just won’t get all hopped up about the team until they do something to merit such enthusiasm ..

  89. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL @ Bat – Good thinking!

  90. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

It’s scary how similar their styles are (Turner & Douglas); both were labeled short armed LT.

This is Douglas in his senior year operating at LT but you can see the style he plays on run downs and it’s very OG like. He gets down and dirty looking to punish defenders.

  91. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I don’t know, seems like hoping the offensive philosophy changes is pissing into the wind. If that’s more fun than imagining the same philsophy better executed than it’s all yours Mike. 🙂

LOL..just having fun. But I hate the way Coyle plays his DBs, I’m just not masochistic enough to hope he changes the way he’s always done it.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bat, when we’ve been healthy Coyle called a very aggressive attacking style of defense. When things started to come apart and he had young guys and guys off the street playing he toned it down a bit. So now that’s all you remember and it’s really not fair.

  93. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Jahn — whether the whipping boy deserves the lashes is a different subject. But I am positive there will always be at least one. If he even cares, best thing a guy like Hickey can do is hope all things bad that happen to the team are blamed on someone else like Ross or Tanny.

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Before we got hit with a lot of injuries our pass defense was 2nd in the league and finished 6th. So I’m not sure why we care how our DBs lineup.

  95. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:
