2015 UDFA Singings

Dennis-Hickey

After 256 players were selected in the 2015 NFL Draft, the fun didn’t end for the Miami Dolphins.  It was time to sign some players who went undrafted.  And there is some quality for Hickey to drool over.

This list is not all inclusive but I think I got most of the recent signings on it…

You may have noticed the Dolphins did not select a LB during the draft.  After the Draft the Dolphins signed 4 Linebackers:  Mike Hull, Jeff Luc, Zack Vigil and Neville Hewitt

MikeHullIt was a surprise that Hull went undrafted.  Penn State has a storied history of successful linebackers in the NFL.  The 6’0, 232 pound Hull had 140 tackles for PSU last season and should compete for a roster spot.

JeffLuc

Like Hull, Jeff Luc also should have been drafted as well.  The senior played his first two years at FSU before transferring to Cincinnati where he received a lot more playing time finishing with 200 career tackles and 8 sacks.

VigilHewitt

Vigil also produced a lot of tackles and sacks at Utah State with 180 career tackles and 12.5 sacks.  And Hewitt…well…Let’s just say a certain Herdfan around here is probably as excited as the Assistant Coach in this pic.

MichaleLietdke

Want more offensive line?  I knew you did!

Ever hear of Illinois State?  Me neither.  But here is what their uniforms look like.  Big #59 is Michael Liedtke one of our new UDFA.

Mickey Baukus

Guess we will find out more about him in August.

The Dolphins also selected Mickey Baucus an offensive tackle rom Arizona. No word on whether Baucus can play inside or not. Bet we find out in August as well.

The Dolphins also signed two specialists, Matt Darr a punter from Tennessee and Andrew Franks a kicker.  Want to see what they look like?  I don’t.  Here is a photo of a kicking pig instead.

Kicking Pig

And of course there is always room from competition at wide receiver and the Dolphins signed two:  Demarr Aultman from Maine and from Nigel King of Kansas.  That’s three new wide receivers.  If you didn’t know already, the Dolphins drafted DeVante Parker in the first round…also get out of your cave…

AultmanKing

There are more UDFAs too.  But I prefer to show you a picture of Dolphins Cheerleaders.

    A great draft weekend
    Lots of story line,
Got a great reciever without having to move
Got a DT out of nowhere lol
Got a shiny new big boy up front
May have a beast of a back
A whole slew of picks in the fifth
And maybe a couple of acorn gems in udfa

The draft certainly didn’t disapoint, no for me !

Now it’s time for the staff to get busy
    Get this thing into shape,
Sept. Will be here before ya know it
    GO PHINS

Ken post for you on last blog I found you the link to a mock showing Philips in the first. Not that I’m happy about being called a liar basically for making the statement.

Oh and go to walterfootball com Charlie’s mick has Jordan Phillips no 28 overall selection and Walter had him early round 2. I can probably find more. Just tell me when you are ready to concede.

Good morning Fellas! I’ve been super busy and tried to log in over the weekend and the site wasn’t cooperating. But I had to try again since the draft was going down.

Well, I love Parker. Not much else to say. Line him up and let’s go!

Meh, on Phillips. I see a guy who could be stout vs the run but offers little to nothing in pass rush. He was controlled pretty well vs Clemson and TCU so I’m wondering where this “1st rd” potential is. I don’t see anything special and this might be the 1st time I really question Hickey. Seems like a big reach and wasted pick.

Douglas seems like a layup(maybe a slam dunk), because he is versatile and looks quick on his feet. Could be the pulling OG we need with Turner being the bull at POA. This OL might work out pretty well.

That’s the extent of my knowledge. So I’ll wait and read what you guys think of the rest of picks. I do like all the potential ST guys they picked up. McCain, Lippett, and Thompson need to eat on ST, especially as gunners, so they should boost a lackluster ST corps. I’m concerned about LB but hope that Suh will make life easier for those guys but Suh isn’t a Dr and Misi’s has a long list of missed games. Who’s the backup MLB? Because he’ll be needed. I don’t like the depth at LB, again, and with guys who don’t play all 16, I gotta wonder what the plan is at LB.

LOL. Was there an argument on Phillips yesterday??? Funny, before we signed Suh he was my top DT target in the first for our D. Needless to say Im a huge fan of the pick😀

LOL Mike! I was happy we picked up Phillips😄. Also noticed this year we went after big bodied DTs vs gap penetrators.

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I guess what I mean is, we should have addressed O-line with a better player in the 2nd. That was how i felt all along, that we needed to get a top OL either in the 1st or 2nd RD, because of two things. Our division (Bills and Jets) are beastly on the D-line, so an inferior OG is going to get his ass handed to him at least 4 times a year facing the Bills and Jets. Also, I think we really need insurance against Branden Albert either not being ready, or being effective due to his injury last year. In my opinion, we didn’t address that. Jamil Douglas IMO is not ready to step into an OG spot to start this season. We needed a better player, but instead took a DT when we just invested over $100M in Suh.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

In the 2nd RD Jake Fisher, who can play both OT and OG was available, and Ali Marpet who plays G. Measurables almost identical to Joel Bitonio, who by the way, started every game last season for CLE.

    • TampaRob(formerly sixthree0ne)'s avatar TampaRob(formerly sixthree0ne) says:

I didn’t like the Phillips pick either and would have preferred a OG or CB in the 2nd rd. I don’t like what I see from Phillips vs Clemson or TCU last year. So I wonder if he’s more than just a space eater. His ceiling seems to be Kendall Langford, which is nothing to sneeze at, but like you said, we spent 100mil on Suh so how much is Phillips going to play? And what about the Johnson guys and Francis? I thought one of those guys could’ve been the 3rd DT in the rotation. We’ll see. My biggest concern remains LB depth once Misi has his annual injury.

I liked what I saw from Phillips on film, he moves very well, just like Juwan James, so I think he could be a starting pulling OG with Turner being the bull. If he’s not ready to start right away, I shudder to think about Dallas Thomas in the starting lineup.

Funny, half paid attention to the second day of the draft after the Phillips pick and had Thought Jamil had been picked up already. Good 4th round pick who handled Leonard Williams in 2013 when he was matched up against him when he was at OG. Williams had 3 tackles and 2 assists while ASU hung 62 points on the Trojans defense.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dbolt, don’t all the UDFAs we signed attend rookie minicamp?

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

When they sign, yes. But I believe many don’t translate to TC depending on performance. Someone like the TE D mentioned earlier is on a tryout during this and could get a TCU invite if he impresses.

  22. D's avatar D says:

As far as DT’s i was never a fan of drafting a DT period but there was a time prior to and just after the Suh signing where a lot of people/mocksters were saying we would still invest high in a DT. I didnt see how after going after Suh, but before i was somewhat understanding of it.

At that particular point in time there were 4 projected 1st rounders, if you count Williams as a DT. My ranking for them was Williams, Brown, Phillips and Shelton. Williams is a beast, he is both agressive in run stopping, powerful punch, bends OL back with good technique, he was a very very special talent as a DT. Brown i actually ranked on equal plane with Phillips because Brown and Phillips are different, one is a more pass rush guy, and doesn’t have the size to eat double-teams. Phillips is more massive, less speedy, but can still generate good pass rush while soaking up double-teams. He actually is almost exactly as our defense intends to use a DT, and is wyi i felt Knighton also represented a good FA for us (after i let some here tell me Suh wasn’t a possibility).

It presents problems for defenses to stop Suh and someone like Phillips who can generate pass rush. We rotate Mitchell and Phillips and we dont lose a beat and they both stay fresh. They are both 3 down DT’s to pair with Suh who probably stays on the field most snaps. Anthony Johnson can be brought in for Suh if rotation is needed. He also offers insurance for if something happens to Suh. He isnt a replacement for a one of a kind talent guy, but he will let us keep some continuity IF something does.

Again i wasnt an overall fan of the position pick but at least we got a guy with that pick who was much higher rated than the place we drafted him AND we got a guy who can help us. I do wish we had selected an ILB or S with that pick but all the guys i had ideas for were off the board by then and really only Perryman was someone we could have had that i leaned a little more towards taking. Mitch Morse and Ali Marpet were guys i thought a lot of, BUT i wouldn’t have selected either in the 2nd. They are not such a special talent that they would have been on top of my board then either. Perryman the Dolphins know better than anyone, and they traded back, to me thats enough said about that and i was just wrong as far as my belief he was a good fit for us.

I would give our draft a B+, because i feel our picks were all solid picks, all were value picks and all met needs we had. I only knock the grade down from A- for simple fact i felt we could have been slightly more aggressive, as in trading up in the second to take a guy like McKinney who i really think we were locked in on, possibly Kendricks, or even Tartt. I also expected we might trade into the 3rd to take a guy like Marpet, or Morse, but since they were off the board the aggressiveness there wouldn’t have been warranted.

    ——————————–
Mike i have never heard anything regarding Jake fisher kicking inside. Not all players can make that transition and Fisher is actually not built for OG. He is light and has weaker core strength to fight off a DT push. I like him as a LT due to his quickness but he wasnt a versatile pick.

    • D's avatar D says:

Marpet has POTENTAIL but everyone was shocked by that pick and the Mitch Morse pick (a guy i liked) because they were 3rd round projections on almost everyone’s mocks. I like both those guys, but i think your over evaluating him.

  25. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Mike

What makes you think Jake Fisher can play OG in the NFL?

Every scouting report in him has him as a RT
    Not inside
Not even in the left side

I do to understand why everyone was claiming fisher was an OG

Frankly he’s not that good to begin with – but a team with a need for a Ry can use him

I feel like the mentality here from some was to reach for OL at all costs
If we give up on our young OL it better be for a guy we know can start from day 1 (like Scherf or Collins) not a developmental player

    • D's avatar D says:

I could see him at LT, but again the difference in LT and RT skills has been blurred in recent years unless your running a true man run based blocking scheme. Then RT and LT are different.

      • D's avatar D says:

Oh and I completely agree with your statement about giving up on our young guys, it should have only been for a very top teir guy.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I did see some say Fisher might be able to play LG but needs to add strength and I also wondered about that because he’s 6-6 293 – kind of lean and lanky as a guard.

As for not drafting Marpet I don’t think our staff had a 2nd rd grade on him so that’s why he wasn’t the pick.

    • D's avatar D says:

At 293, good height and quickness he is better at LT where he will be matched most often against a speed rusher. Again as i said before RT and LT about the same deal these days because DE’s are almost all speed rushers or guys who have both speed and power moves in their arsenal. At OG height and weight, he will lose leverage battles to more compact DT’s and also he will clog the passing lanes being so tall. He is not suited for OG from anything i have seen of him. I did really like him for a potential OT replacement in a couple years for Albert, but thats about it. Next year, we can find a guy for that purpose.

  27. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

My favorite UDFA is UT long snapper Nate Boyer, who is going to camp with the Seahawks. He’s ancient at 34, and he never even played football till he was 27. He’s only 5-foot-11, 220 pounds. And even he admits he’s too slow.

Why am I rooting for Boyer?………..he’s an ex-green beret who volunteered for multiple tours in Afghanistan in the most dangerous assignments, including well past when he had to be there. He though it better he be there than someone with more to lose. As he puts it, “”Maybe he’s got a wife and kids and God forbid something happens.”

I’d be a little nervous if I was the current LS on the Hawks roster.

  28. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Fisher couldn’t play inside in the Pac-12. How’s he going to do it in the NFL? I liked him as a tackle prospect, but there’s no way that guy was a day 1 plug and play at guard.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m pretty sure our staff felt the same way.

    • D's avatar D says:

I really dont see him kicking inside period, he would be going against the grain on his body type and skill set, he would be a very uphill battle to ever start at OG

  29. D's avatar D says:

I have said this before, hardest position to play and the position you have to have athletic gifts is at LT and these days about as important for RT to have them. OC is then the next hardest to play and requires more skill to play than OG. OG’s however due to the change in the NFL where these really massive, powerful and freakishly quick DT have become the norm, is becoming a very important position to play. Having said that, not all OT’s can kick inside to play OG, not all OC’s can kick inside and play it, and the reverse of that is almost unheard of. I think just grabbing a guy and going “Oh we can stick him here” has gotten a little out of hand,. You need to start looking at the skills and matchups that make that possible and then compare what a guy shows you at his current position that makes that feasible.

Example would be Collins. He shows quickness on is first step, he has good lateral movement skills, he plays with a nasty demeanor, drives through players, gets good body lean, sets his base well, has a strong first punch, and can get downfield quick enough to challenge second level defenders. 6’5 322 is a little taller than average inside, but not so grossly tall that it will be a huge deal, he will just have to clear guys out of the lane and not make the QB throw over him. His weight to go along with his lean and base setting ability is perfect for holding off DT’s. This is why he makes sense at OG as well as OT. He and Scherff were pretty much the only guys worth taking to have confidence stats for us, but again even had he not been under investigation i think we still take Parker and id still agree with that pick.

  30. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

what is this bullshit. a 631 trying to become tamparob. does he not know this town is only big enough for one rob, he has to know he is dea……..oh wait, i live in lutz. ok nevermind rob. welcome to tampa. watch out for them buc fans, they are mother f-ers

  31. D's avatar D says:

We could add him as out long snapper, he is pretty much same age as Denney, i kid i kid, but i like the idea of having a guy with his attitude on our team, its infectious and helps combat the reverse of that infection caused by a locker room cancer.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bottom Line If you are a zone-based team looking for an athletic, well-schooled tackle who can come in and compete for a starting position right away, then Fisher is your guy. He has the feet to play the left side and is savvy enough in the run game to man the right side. He needs more weight on his frame, but guard is also an option for Fisher.
    _______________________________
    Projecting Fisher’s Draft Stock

All in all, Jake Fisher isn’t a spectacular prospect, but he still warrants consideration for a top draft pick. His footwork in pass protection is better than most in the 2015 draft class, and for the most part he is a devastating run blocker.

Fisher can step right in and start at right tackle or either guard spot. Left tackle could be in his future, but until he gets his upper body mechanics figured out, he’s too much of a liability protecting the blind side.
    ________________________________

    Scouting Report:
    Strengths:

Athletic. Fisher is a former tight end and moves well. Good initial quickness at the snap of the ball.
Fisher sustains blocks and keeps good balance.
Keeps a wide base and mirrors well.
Gets to the second level quick. Transitions well from initial block to the second level.
Has good knee bend and balance which helps him anchor well.
A very good double team blocker. Releases from one target to hit another defender.
Blue collar player. Fisher is a selfless, passionate, and versatile player.
Fisher is versatile. Can play either tackle position and can move inside to guard as well.

He was also the backup G in his freshman year, so he’s played G.

But I’m sure not all teams felt that way.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have no idea Tim. It doesn’t matter now, we have Jamil Douglas, Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner. May the 4th be with us.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

That scouting report underlines that he was a tackle prospect not a guard. It said he could compete for a starting position right away at Tackle.

Being labeled a backup guard (as a freshman, in the pac-12) is administrative. He has no meaningful experience there.

Just saying, I liked him as a tackle prospect, but not as a guard. Even if you project him to guard (that breakdown was a fairly feeble attempt IMHO) he comes into Miami and is relegated to the bench as a rookie. Than it’s “Philbin won’t play rookies” or some other noise.

    • Well then…3 of the top 4 schools (most draft picks) are from the state of Florida, and numerous players from Louisville (#2) are from Fla. So many players in the NFL are from the sunshine state. Also, with UM having 7 players chosen (2 in the first round) but had a 6-7 record is more proof HC Al Golden is horrible.

  33. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I try not to get invested in UDFAs cause most get cut, but sometimes some of them can make a career of it.

“He played collegiately at Division II Shippensburg (Pa.), signed in 2006 but was cut during training camp; later was re-signed and played in NFL Europe in 2007.”

    That would be Brent Grimes.

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, Thomas, Turner, McClendon, Asper, Douglas and Liedtke will compete at guard. Also Walton and Brenner will probably get snaps when they’re not playing center.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Possibly a vet like when we added Colledge late last year. We’re not going to add some stud guard at this point and I don’t think our staff is as concerned about it as many fans are.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Is Fox and/or Colledge still on the roster? A couple starters emerging from that group playing between Albert-Pouncey-Jame is very likely and feasible. It’s not group of 5 all-pros but no team has that luxury.

Boulder may also be right. We don’t know what camp cuts or other transactional business will bring before the season starts as well.

I do like that Suh is going to get his financial advice from Buffet rather than some friend or family guy though. Shows good judgment on his part and decreases the chance of the whole entourage trap.

  36. Stanger: Cam Wake was also undrafted — “signed by the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2005.” Sam Shields from UM was signed by the Packers after being undrafted as well…there are ALWAYS gems that go undrafted and have something to prove.

  37. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, Suh has a goal of becoming a billionaire. I don’t think Suh is an entourage type of guy. He’s close to his family, I don’t think he has a posse or anything.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

By all signs not and becoming friends with Buffet is a big one. He wouldn’t have been doing an interview with Suh just for the fun of it. Buffet only does what Buffet wants. He’s too old and rich to do otherwise. Would be different if he owned the Phins.

  38. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jahn, Colledge retired and we re-signed Fox but I’m not sure he’s an option at guard. I think he’s strictly a tackle but I’m not totally sure on that.

  39. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

after the season we had 2 glaring issues with this team. Fix the run defense and fix the o-line.

We’ve addressed the run defense but IMO we still have work to do with the o-line. I bet we bring in a vet like we did last year with Colledge. If the coaches feel that we can go into the season with
turner, thomas and douglas as our main guards then they’re crazy.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’d be surprised if we don’t bring in another G. Wouldn’t be shocked if we traded for one, but vet FA is more likely. Might be a cap cut casualty.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

How do you know anything about Turner and Douglas at this point and even Thomas played mostly RT last year? I just don’t get how anywhere knows what our guards will look like when there is very little or no sample size to go by. Guard is not considered one of the toughest positions to find.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I know they haven’t played a single snap in the NFL. To me there is a risk associated with assuming either one of them are starters. I wouldn’t risk my job.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Boulder, Turner was drafted last year to play guard even though he was a small school LT. If we drafted a LG higher in the draft he’d still be inexperienced as well.

  41. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I also think OG is probably our number 1 priority when cap casualties come along

But honestly, Turner, Thomas and Douglas should all get a long look

If something like a Mathis becomes available – that would be a dream

Other than that I think 3 young guys competing to start is pretty ideal unless you want to spend high kicks in the interior line (which I generally don’t want to)

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jacques McClendon who is a former 4th round pick is a journeyman but he’s been in the NFL since 2010 so he has experience. You never know, sometimes guys find the right team and opportunity.

  42. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dbolt, exactly on Mathis. John Benton is also known for turning guys like that into quality starters.

  43. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

“You never know what’s going to happen,” Lippett said of his position. “But right now, I’m a corner for the Miami Dolphins. I’m going to try to excel at that position as best as I can.”

It’s kind of cool having a guy who’s versatile like that.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Seems given how young and talented our WR corps is right now that being a DB offers him a lot better chance to both stick and play going forward.

Very good competition in our LB corp now, the last remaining corp that needed some work.

I’d say we have one helluva balanced roster now, very good competition & young developing depth at most positions.

    “Miami Dolphins
Best Pick: I love second-round defensive tackle Jordan Phillips. He will be a better NFL player than he showed at Oklahoma. Playing next to Ndamukong Suh will really help his game.

Questionable move: Waiting until the fourth round to pick an offensive lineman on a team that needs help up front.

Third-day gem: Fourth-round pick Jamil Douglas was a tackle at Arizona State last year, but I think he can be a dominant guard, his original position.

Analysis: The Dolphins had a nice draft. Whoever was making the picks — Dennis Hickey or Mike Tannenbaum — deserves a lot of credit. First-round pick DeVante Parker will be a nice target for Ryan Tannehill. The first two picks were outstanding.

La’el’s agent “said his client would not sign with a team if picked in Saturday’s fourth through seventh rounds and that he would not sign an undrafted free agent contract.”

But now it is looking like the actual NFL rule is that “players who are selected by a team but never actually sign a contract are allowed to re-enter the draft the following year, but this rule does not apply to players who go undrafted. ”

If all that is true then sounds like Collins’ agent seriously F-ed up.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah he would have had to been drafted and then basically not signed and held out a year. He did fuck up by making that statement. I dont think he can even try to become a FA at a later time either because he hasnt played for a team yet therefore will always be a rookie undrafted FA until he does.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

      Either:

      or
      C) None of it mattered because teams weren’t going to draft him in any scenario.

I think it was C. I don’t think it had anything to do with presuming his guilt or innocence, and everything to do with: It’s simply too risky for a team to voluntarily affiliate themselves with a guy who left the draft to head back home and be questioned in a murder case.

LSU G/T La’El Collins met with Baton Rouge police for “more than an hour” on Monday.
Through a spokesman, the BRPD said it had “no new information to report,” but confirmed Collins is not a suspect in the murder of his ex-girlfriend. “It went fine; we answered all their questions,” Collins’ attorney said. “The investigation is going to continue. La’el is now going to start making an effort to start getting his football career back on track.” Teams won’t compete to sign Collins until he’s announced as 100 percent in the clear, but that could come some time this week.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I wonder how much of that last sentence is 100% speculative. This is the first time I’ve seen anyone put a timeline on it. I would think only an arrest of someone else could have him in the clear this week. If it did happen, and he signed with us, it’d be a dream scenario.

    • D's avatar D says:

Its not looking good for him no matter what, it wouldnt take this long to announce free and clear if there wasnt something hanging out there or some suspicion. I would like for a guy like than not to have ended his life but just the logistics of it doesnt make sense to me if he is completely innocent. If he is i would try to sign him, i wouldnt hold the suspicion against him, im just not sure i feel thats going to happen.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I don’t think there’s a detective alive who would rule out the Ex-Boyfriend in a murder case without a rock solid-lock-to-convict suspect in hand. Law enforcement isn’t in the business of ruining Collins’ life, but they’re also not in the business worrying about his football interests either.

I guess what I’m saying is, I don’t think the likelihood he’s going to be charged is any higher today than it was the day they said they wanted to question him…but until we can see transcripts of the questioning, we can obviously never quite know.

  73. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Jahn, another good point as well. It’s rare to see a 300+ lb man be able to go at it snap after snap. It’s up to him & the coaches to try and rotate him out when they can.

All Collins can do now is sign with a team as an undrafted free agent, and the league puts strict limitations on how much undrafted free agents are able to sign for (again, it would be nice if NFL players had a union), meaning Collins will get a league-minimum contract.”

“C) None of it mattered because teams weren’t going to draft him in any scenario.”

Jahn — maybe it was his agent screwing up or maybe a power move that didn’t work to get him drafted, but I ain’t buying that. Who wouldn’t put out a 7th and hope for the best. And getting picked in the 7th round would have been the best thing for him.

Even if he didn’t want to play for that team, he could have said “trade me to one of these others or I sit out.” And sitting out would have meant first round next year with the guaranteed big contract he can no longer get.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

the answer seems clear Stanger, no team in the league put out a 7th and hoped for the best. a gambit by his agent wouldn’t change a teams mind about drafting late vs. not at all. So again, the conclusion is obvious to me.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Jahn — but no so clear to me. If his agent knew that was true why the “we ain’t playing for no stinking third day contract” when getting one would have been to his clear advantage?

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Because the agent doesn’t know the teams aren’t going to sign him no matter what and he’s gambling. The agent obviously thought he was getting something out of that statement. Either A) he’s an idiot who didn’t know the rules (I seriously doubt this), or B) he was trying to compel a team to draft him in the 3rd or earlier rounds.

You seem to think the gambit was motivated by the desire to see him go undrafted, but that’s the rub, I don’t see an upside to that outcome for the reasons we’ve both recognized.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Edit: it’s important to remember WHEN the agent made this statement. He made it prior to day 2. NOT prior to day 3.

If he did it prior to day 3, than it’s a whole different discussion. But I thought it was clear he wanted a 2nd or 3rd round contract and used the statement to apply some leverage.

In other words, he gambled and lost…but he lost far more than he realized he would lose (thinking a “loss” meant he ONLY got a 3rd day contract, rather than going completely undrafted).

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Jahn — his agent first wanted him to get in the supplemental draft. NFL said not possible. Agent then said, “draft him third or above or he’ll wait till next year.” NFL rules say that is not possible for a UDFA. That’s at least two strikes on the agent. But yeah could have just been a gambit that failed.

  83. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Hmm, what if Albert wasn’t going to be ready by week 1 ???

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch passes along “word” that free agent OT Jake Long wants to continue his football career.
Long is only 30 years old, but his career has been stalled by a series of major injuries. He tore his ACL last Week 8, and is believed to have had “early-rehab setbacks” in his recovery. There are a handful of teams that remain tackle needy after the draft. Long should be available for the vet minimum.

  84. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

    D, regarding big Jake:

I think at league minimum he could be an excellent fit actually. What IF Albert is projected to be ready? What’s his history? His history is getting injured LATE in seasons, after the reps have taken their toll. What if we had a guy like Jake simply re-hab-ing all season until that (hopefully hypothetical only) day when our desperate need meets his availability?

League minimum. I feel like as a #1 overall draft choice of the fins, our org should be the one to extend him the opportunity he wants. This isn’t a progress stopper we’re talking about.

Jahn — but no so clear to me. If his agent knew that was true why the “we ain’t playing for no stinking third day contract” when getting one would have been to his clear advantage?
    ————————————
Part of it could be mathematics of it. If He signs a rookie deal, he’s locked in to 4 years at a certain rate. Lets say its a 5th round or below. Sturgis was a 5th rounder and his contract has him averaging 650-700k a year for 4 years. The UDFA contract sans signing bonus is 485k per for 3, so he loses out on about 200k a year over 3 so loss of 600k, but when he gets his extension he could jump to millions more than he would have made in 4th year of a 5th or lower contract, meaning he averaged more that way than if he got drafted. It makes some sense, but i really think it was a power play that failed.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I can agree with this thinking. I think the primary motivation was to get him drafted on day 2. Secondary though, could’ve been this. I’m still hashing it out in my head…obviously…

Good point on the math, but I’d still take sitting out a year and a first round contract over a UDFA one. And point is that if he got drafted the choice would have been up to him one way or the other. Not getting drafted limited both his options and his leverage.

yea I agree that its a team thing not just tanny. That includes coaches as well not just players.

Warriors are unbelievable this year. I know someone will challenge them but their scoring as well as Cleveland’s loss makes them the easy champ pick at this time.

  91. Playing the NFC East is no joke – the Eagles, Giants & Cowboys have winning streaks against us and we open up Game 1 at Washington. We never play well against the Ravens and Texans. Our divisional opponents added a lot of talent via FA and the draft. We just need to win – I don’t care against who, where, etc. no excuses.

I think I would rather play that division than the west or the north

The only desirable NFC division is the south

I don’t think the redskins or giants will be too good
      But who knows

At least the road trips aren’t across the country (silver lining)

I agree. NFC east will be tough this year

    Wyo

Carimi had a rough start to his career, but he got on track. I wouldn’t mind bringing him in for some competition.

I think NFC East will be tough only because the competition level among each other is pretty close and they are all pretty decent. Boys i think are going to miss the running game they had. They didnt pick up anyone in the draft and are going to have to rely on upcoming cuts to get someone, unless that mystical trade for AP ever materializes and that may cost them so much it hurts them more in the long-run. Philly’s QB situation sucks i dont care what they say they think of Bradford. They also didnt really upgrade their secondary as much as they needed to in a division with two franchise QB’s with elite number 1 receivers. Speaking of Giants, they had a good draft i thinnk and probably will be a tough opponent this year. They got all the right pieces and if their draft class pays out are going to be good. Washington has a really good draft but i think they are so weak currently they are still going to drag the bottom of the division, but be a little tougher to beat than last year. They still have a horrible QB situation.

Randy Gregory looks a bit like a black version of Jaws from the Bond movies.
