Anatomy of an AFC East Win 2015
by son of a son of a shula
If the 2015 season is going to be a success for our beloved Miami Dolphins then feasting on Division opponents will be key to a playoff run. Playing solid, focused football on both sides of the ball, avoiding turnovers and playing excellent Special Teams will be the reason for success in this upcoming season. Winning the three home games will be imperative despite one of those being in London. Avoiding late season collapses is paramount and quite obvious or we face a brutal offseason. Stealing wins in close games on the road would be ideal and keeping the hammer down when we get a lead should become the new norm for Philbin’s Phins.
The Defense:
Led by newly acquired and dominant Ndamakong Suh we must stop the run. Not stop the run for a quarter or for a couple of series – no – we must become a team that is almost impossible to run on. Teams in the AFC East all want to establish the running game control the clock and beat you with a very tough Defe
nse. We have to beat teams to the punch. With Suh, Mitchell and Phillips we have three big tough bodies that will be the catalyst for the ’15 Dolphin’s Defense to be a top squad. We’ll be solid up the middle so it will be up to the Linebackers and secondary to contain outside rushers and not let someone beat them around the edge. Getting a solid push up front will be key to setting up blitzes, disguising coverages and feasting on turnovers. Putting Smith and Cassell in throwing situations is what we want to do. Allow our front to pressure them into bad throws, sacks and of course picks. Forcing Brady to throw can be somewhat of a gamble but if he is hurried (and using properly inflated balls) and on the move then advantage D.
Sure it sounds good when you say it fast – stop the run and pin your ears back and rush the passer, who doesn’t try to do that. Imposing your will and proper game planning will bring about those scenarios. The other factor is the score board, that’s where our offense can make life a lot easier for the Defense so let’s take a look.
The Offense:
I don’t want to cloud this objective with stats. Stats don’t tell the whole story. Yes scoring went up significantly last year as a whole but there were plenty of times when our offense failed to get even a single first down, move the ball enough to flip field position or run out the clock for a win. It has to change. The defenses in the AFC East w
ant to do what we want to do, they want to take away the run, force you to throw it and pressure the pocket. Why is that different against the Dolphins than the rest of the division? One word – Running Quarterback. Tannehill can set us apart with his running ability, he can do just enough to keep the defense guessing while he makes plays outside the pocket both running and throwing the ball.
Now in year two of the Lazor offense and with what appears to be a much higher skilled level of playmakers the time to strike is now. Our offensive line needs to keep Tannehill clean but also allow Miller and company lanes to run the ball. I think it will be important to score quickly against our division opponents to limit what they want to do. We need a more productive passing game in terms of getting the ball down field, and the guys were brought in to do just that. Gone are the days of catch and drop, it doesn’t get you anywhere. Becoming a quick strike explosive Offense will get us leads to play with and allow us the ability to get back into games if we find ourselves trailing.
Special Teams:
It’s very simple here. Spiller can’t run free on us, Landry can’t fumble punt returns, Sturgis can’t miss FG attempts. Having Fields avoid a slump like the one he endured last season will help. Causing turnovers on Special Teams is ideal, fumbles, blocked kicks but not allowing long returns is just as important. Play solid Special Teams and good things will happen.
Playing with a lead because of an explosive passing game and having a consistent running game to eat clock and preserve leads are the keys to AFC East domination. The other key factor, and yes I agree the elephant in the room, is going to be keeping this team playing at a high level for all 16 games. It goes without saying that another long December will be Philbin’s doom. The reshaping of the roster going into this year will have a lot to do with that not happening again. Suh on Defense should easily change the culture there. Gone is the ever tiring Starks, the joking and disappearing Odrick and the feeling of hopelessness as the opponent runs at will all the way to Christmas. Staying healthier this year than last will help as well. On offense we have legit playmaker’s who by all accounts appear to be team first guys, sorry no diva’s needed here. Jennings the vet, Parker the acrobat, Stills the burner and Landry the persistent force. Trust that the Oline will gel and improve under Benton in his second year is all we can do right now, there are enough good players to make that unit solid if not even formidable. Yes I said formidable.
Don’t coach scared Joe, trust in your players and impose your will. New England’s run must end –Now is the time.

Anatomy – no I’m not mad at you

Nice work Son! I agree with your points above. The other thing I would like to add is we have to get off to a fast start this season. We need to go AT LEAST 4-2 in our first 6 games, preferably 5-1 (6-0 is asking too much, but I’d take that). Our schedule gets much more difficult over the last 10 games, and we can’t out ourselves in a position where we need to go 7-3 to make the playoffs- that’s going to be asking too much.
*put (damn autocorrect changes that almost every time on me!)
YES! I like it Son. Go dolphins! WIN THE EAST! FUCK THE BILLS JETS AND PATRIOTS!
fast start is vital if not then we are doomed with all the away games in such a short period of time where we run out of GAS. Good analysis.

Dolphins backup DBs. I cant quite see how they don’t keep 12 DBs…
Great piece Son
I like the growling Suh pic too – grrrrrrrrr
Well done Sonny! I’m hoping our running game gives us that extra oomph that we’ve been lacking. Not just the ability to get 5.0 YPC, but the ability to run at will, and dominate in the trenches. Take the pressure off the O-line trying to pass block far too often.
I like the “I hope I don’t get queasy” Philbin pic
Time to get Wake into the limelight of the playoffs and the Superbowl. He’s due, while he still has something left in the tank.
Hey Mikey, yes it’s time. We should have the horses to keep him fresh to the end of the season too.
Yeah, we have a lot of depth on that D-line, all kinds of hybrid players (DT/DE/LB) like Shelby, Fede, McCain and possibly the big Dieke.
Here is a photo of wake’s tank
Now when I see those I think of the Soprano’s opening theme…
Woke up this morning
got myself a gun
Wow Wyoming keeping 12 DB’s is a lot.
24 on O like Naples said
plus 12 is 36 leaving 17 spots and three of those go to P, K, LS.
14 Dline and linebackers
Suh
Phillips
Wake
Mitchell
Fede
Johnson
Vernon
Shelby
8
Misi
Jenkins
McCain
Tripp
Sheppard
Paysinger
Leaves us awful thin up front
We won’t be carrying that many DB’s. Hopefully, we have a clear picture who belongs, and who doesn’t. Guys need to step up in TC and in the preseason and make it clear that they need to be on the roster.
No more than 10 DBs.
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2015/05/dolphins-need-to-consider-every-upgrade-option.html
Couldn’t agree more. We should have our eyes wide open for any quality OG vets that are cut.
I think it really depends on whether the staff is as concerned about guard as fans and the media make it out to be.
Of course, but I think they should be concerned. REALLY concerned. lol
Mike E, don’t be surprised if J.D. Walton ends up starting at guard. Even though he’s bounced around a bit and is considered more of a center.
It’s possible, but I’d be looking to get a quality vet, one that you know will excel at G. We’ve made all these moves, come so far, it would be a shame to have it unravel because we can’t protect Tanny up the middle and can’t get a crease for our RB’s.
Why would a team release a “quality” vet guard? Salary? Then he’ll play for us for peanuts and maybe his own bottle of monkey spanking lotion?
It happens every year. Vet is unhappy w/salary and team has a young guy ready to play, so they cut him. Maybe we can fit him under our cap, maybe we can’t, but it happens often.
Last season, Lippett caught 65 passes for 1,198 yards and 11 touchdowns. Over his four-year career, he caught 149 passes for 2,247 yards and 15 touchdowns.
About keeping DBs, we might be able to steal a WR spot from the offense numbers, thinking Lippett could be our 5th wR if it came to crunch time. but we would consider him a CB project for yrs to come, especially since our WRs are mostly young and / or durable.
This was in the Big Ten … this is no D3 guy at WR.
We have him listed as a CB, and that’s where they want him to play. For now at least.
Lippett is being worked at corner for us. Being that he was productive as a WR he always has that to fall back on. He’ll also have to play STs.
nice job Son. Queasy Joe needs to be less queasy this year 🙂
Tim
I’m not talking about an All-Pro guard, because that’s not very likely. IMO, a quality player is a guy who can play his position without having to worry about him, and that’s an upgrade over what Dallas Thomas will likely give you. If he beats out a vet we sign, more power to him.
Like a Colledge type.
Yeah, but hopefully one that doesn’t break down at the end of the season. I believe Colledge retired.
Colledge did retire. He got some sort of migraines late in the year that I believe was due to some head trauma.
As he stood at the edge of the practice field, McCoy’s replacement at running back, DeMarco Murray, said he was unaware of what McCoy said. When McCoy’s remarks about Kelly cutting “all the good black players” were relayed to him, Murray surveyed the scene and chuckled a little bit.
“I’m looking around,” Murray said with a smirk. “There are a lot of us out here. I’m not sure about that.”
That was a dumb remark by McCoy. Kind of shady actually. lol
LOL
It reeks of him being pissed off he was traded.
I think Lippett is an awesome guy to have on the team because he canback up at WR in case something f’ed up happens and we lose a couple in one game, and alos can backup at CB. I think though they intend for him to start before too long. They have been looking to add a big CB to the mix for a while. Couple of the FA guys and recent draftee’s have been those types. Bowman, Aikens, Heath Rose Seamster all 6′ plus. Not to say that they dont like having a really athletic fleet of foot guy with ball skills like Grimes on the field but i think they want to pair him with a dude with size on the other side or eventually replace him with one. Im actually pretty excited by Lippett, and think we got a really good deal getting him i the 5th.
Good post, totally agree. If Taylor doesn’t lock down the starting spot opposite Grimes I think Bowman will be the guy.
I almost guarantee we sign a vet OGonce cuts start coming. I dont think you have to worry about that Mike, and yeah, i feel if Dallas Thomas gets the job its because he earned, im just not at the point of saying he wont like some of you are. Im pro team not pro player, so if its best for us to play someone else im all for it.
I hope you’re right. We need a solid Veteran guard.
Agree with Mike E & Tim.
Don’t bother looking at Lippett’s WR numbers because that’s not what the Fins drafted him for.
There are plenty of NFL guys who were productive at one position in college but because of skills set and height/weight combinations found another position in the NFL ranks.
Lippett already showcased some of his CB skills so a NFL team (like Miami) already could evaluate him against real competition and not some theoretical model.
I believe they noticed him at CB when they were scouting someone else.
I think i read they actually noticed him at CB when initially scouting him as a WR earlier in his last season in college.
Also i saw the whole statement about off-sides being a killer for a DT, but ill tell ya if his net yardage is negative i wont give a shit if he jumps offsides from time to time. If he is planting people in the backfield and sacking the QB and part of the payment is for him to jump early trying to get his timing down for the snap….wont care. Its only going to hurt overall if he does that more than TFL.
D, that makes sense on how Lippett was being scouted.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how our secondary plays out. There’s a lot of competition and good skill to choose from.
Deep group, very different from last year where we were picking dudes up out of their street clothes and throwing jerseys on them.
Yeah, I think that’s why we addressed the position so heavily. Signed three in FA in bringing back Delmas, adding Bowman and Bryce McCain and drafted three in Bobby McCain, Lippett and Thompson.
McCoy was pissed off. He has gone with a media friendly/jilted lover version of “yeah well im better off here anyway”. I dont know that its actually the fact its Buffalo he plays for, or just that its not Philly. He loved Philly, has spent his entire football life int at area if i remember correctly. Then again, he also went to a team that has a horrible QB situation, making his life harder, a miserably cold town where he will play outdoors in dead of winter for home games, and in particular there isnt shit in Buffalo or for miles around. Last part not a big issue since he can fly wherever he wants to any time he wants to, but still, its gotta suck being there vs say Chicago, Or New Orleans, etc etc.
Very nice Son — no reason why we cannot win the division or it all. If you set low standards you can’t reach the top!
I think that’s the team’s mindset this year from top to bottom.
Chris Chester just got cut a couple days ago fromt he redskins, he’s decent. He’s a 4 year starter and has started all 16 games each of the 4 years. He was just more valuable to cut because they have good OL depth and he woulda been a very expensive backup when Scherff takes his spot.
He’s got an interesting NFL career and yes he’s exactly the type of guy we could target.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Chester_%28American_football%29
The idea of Hillary Clinton as president and Bill Clinton as 1st Gent makes me throw up in my mouth. Can this country look to different people and stop recycling the same fucking names over and over. I know Obama was different but Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Clinton is fucking ridiculous. Let’s just go back to Kings and Queens why don’t we.
I don’t get it!
Cheerleaders love pork!

Greg Jennings can run every single route in the book.
And he will here.
You have to like the idea when we go empty backfield – Stills and Parker outside, Landry and Jennings inside, Cameron wherever.
Tim,
Regarding your thoughts on the Clintons, seems the same way in sports LOL. Recycling “names” is preferred.
Yeah but I feel differently about the same families running the country. We’re such saps. LOL

I don’t get it!
😉
At your age probably not? 🙂
Why are Dolphins cheerleaders with Redskins?
I think it was 631 who used to talk about how the previous GM used to piss him off by constructing the team from the inside out (OG/DL then skill positions) but we sit here today with a GM who has decided to work it from outside in (revamps the skill positions then worry about the OL/DL strength). Luckily the Fins had Wake/Vernon and some other guys on the outside so repairing the interior was the only need. Out went Starks/Odrick and in came Mitchell & now Suh. I think the front office is going about it hte right way; OL will be easier to fix than WR & other skill positions. They already added the most important OL pieces (OT) and just need to hit on some interior OL.
Where is 631?
In Tampa, near FFR and OD
I do think we have a different mindset. We’re not just thinking we can play, we think we’re playing to get to the Superbowl.
Tim,
I hear ya, between the Clinton & Bush families; seems there’s more of the same than what the US broke apart from (UK traditions) LOL.
Exactly! Saps! LOL
D
Chris Chester is the guy that Mando discussed in his article. I’d bring him in.
He’s built as a zone blocker, and he trived in that system. When they moved to the power/man scheme, he hasnt been as effective, but still good enough to start. We probably have to give him 3-4 a year to get him i think.
Tim that’s the point! 😉
( I had to go back and look to see if there actually was something else besides Cheerleaders in the pic)
It’s too small to get any great female effect. Try doing something like this.

Al,
Sorry, but everyone knows that a QB has absolutely no impact on how an OL performs. If the OL struggles, we certainly can’t expect the QB to help them out and make them better, can we? Sheer poppycock!
He does all the time by escaping the crap pocket. Go watch some highlights to clear the cobwebs from your memory. 🙂
Ha! Wait till Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner are starting at G. 😉
STOP COACHING SCARED JOE!!!
Good job Son. Nice write up.
Tim,
running out of the pocket should be the last option. Manning doesn’t, and he still manages to make his OL better. There are lots of things a QB can do before that becomes necessary. Varying cadence, pump fakes, knowing where the pressure is coming from presnap, adjusting protection, getting rid of the ball, sliding inside the pocket just to name a few. Go watch the highlights yourself and tell me he does those things consistently and actually helps his OL. Far too often, he drops back to the same predictable spot, stands there and let’s the pressure get to him. Defenses never have to guess about where he’ll be.
I was just joking around. We’ve had this discussion a thousand times. Everyone has to get better, it’s not one guy.
I’ve seen a lot of progress from Tannehill in 3 years that you don’t seem to acknowledge.

yeah tim. fu. tanny sucks. how dare him in his third year not be better than manning.
Rob
At least now, Tanny is almost making as much $$$ as Manning
Tim,
Not mad! Just talking. I really would like it if guys would go look at film and truthfully critique what tanny does in the pocket because I just don’t see a guy who helps his OL….which definitely struggled. i blame the OL first and foremost. It’s their job. They need to play better, but there are things tanny can do to help. The QB truly can have a significant impact on their protection. And that will mean more positive plays for the team.
***
As far as his progress….well, it’s gotten him to the mid range of NFL qbs and the team to .500, so I acknowledge it. I just don’t see where it’s done much for the team. so yeah…he’s improved, but so did our OL…after some major changes and hurdles last year….and NOBODY wants to acknowledge that either! Lol

yeah true. but lauren told me he is going to give half the money to his o line for making him so successful.

The line was pretty good with Albert-Colledge-Satele-Pouncey-James, but when Albert went down and Colledge got banged up, it was awful.
Ok, I am done ruining people’s day. Tanny is great!!! Superbowl here we come!!!!!
LOL @ Rob – That’s mighty generous of her
All this talk about anxiously waiting for a ‘vet OL’ to be cut and save the day….lol
Folks, remember, this was already addressed early on in the offseason before many other positions 1st & foremost by the signings of vets Jeff Linkenbach, Jacques McClendon, & JD. Walton,
There will already be lots of nice vet competition to begin camp with.
Should some great OL that is CLEARLY better than all we have in camp now, slip thru the cracks & gets cut, and Miami pounces on him first or pays him the most, then so be it. We’ll see.
Until then, lets see what we have already here now before we think we know more than the current staff.
I agree im not overly concerned if we dont. But a guy like Chris Chester i wouldn’t pass on.

Ok, I am done ruining people’s day.
yeah dick head, who the fuck do you think you are……jetssuck?
Randy, Tanny will continue to get better, and can now help his OL more with better receivers.
Guys that can get open, find a crease, comeback to the ball better, track the ball better, & make the CATCH better than last years crop.
Plus the added running game influence of Ajayi over DT3 will help the OL also, thus helping Tanny & the OL in the passing game.
All that collectively with Year 2 in both Benton & Lazor’s system = Good Times Ahead!
I agree partially with what Randy is saying, though i dont know if i place as much of it on Tanny or i guess id say im more apologetic for him than maybe Randy is. Tanny does not do some of the prototypical QB things as well as some other franchise guys do. I dont know that i have seen him pump fake more than a handful of times the entire time he has been in the league. The system is different and pump fakes are more for pro-style or air coryell style system where airing it out is part of the design. Steeler’s run this, Denver runs it some, so does new orleans. All of those QB heavily use the pump fake, Rodgers doesnt do it a lot either so part of that is design and i tgink the rest is just he hasnt worked that into his bag of tricks.
He also doesn’t really read or have a natural feel for the pocket around him. I have seen him more than one time step to the side of the most pressure, and/or fail to step up in the pocket when able. Yes i know he got a lot of pressure up the middle, but there were times the OL parted the pocket beautifully and he probably could have run for 10 yards if he needed to and he still fell to the pressure without stepping forward. He has gotten a lot better about it, and he also has gotten a lot better with his lateral move to open the passing lanes. He’s a work in progress and these are all items QB get better and better at as they gain experience, so im not really worried about it.
On Wednesday night’s Finsiders show, there were 820 total NFL receptions on set, and the men who made all those catches in O.J. McDuffie and Chris Chambers discussed how dangerous this current receiver depth the Dolphins possess could be for opposing defenses.
“It’s an offense that’s already predicated on getting the guy with the best options, the best mismatch, a guy that has a better option with the DB on him,” said McDuffie.”I think they’re going to spread it out completely this year. Jarvis (Landry) will probably lead the team in receptions…but I can see a lot of these guys getting 40-50 catches each and going out there and taking advantage of whatever the mismatch is.
“You got a lot of different guys that can get it done a lot of different ways, and that’s always got to be a very comforting thing for a guy like Ryan Tannehill to get it to the right guy, and let him run with it.”
Chambers sees that receiving room chemistry already starting to build. And he sees one wide receiver being a serious catalyst to that, and that same wideout being able to provide a vast array of veteran knowledge to the younger talents like Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker, Landry, and Rishard Matthews.
“There’s a lot of competition, that’s what I see,” said Chambers. “I can already see a little swag with the boys, they look really good. You have (Greg) Jennings out there that can run every single route in the book. I remember watching clips on him and we used to mimic and wish you could do that. That’s how serious he is as a route runner. He doesn’t have to be blazing fast because he knows how to get in and out of his routes. He knows how to read coverages, he knows how to catch the ball…and all that will be bestowed on all the younger guys.
“I see this group really taking off, everybody getting their opportunity to make plays, no one being selfish, and it’ll be an exciting group to watch.”
GDP
The guys we brought in on the O-line are depth only. I’m talking about a starter bro, not the backup quality guys we brought in. And I thought you like Tannehill.
Ohh Ok, now I get it….we wait till other teams cut their starting OL so they can go with their backups…hmm, makes sense. 😉
it happens all the time. Quality guys pushed out because of young guys ready to take their spot.
D, yeah I know about Chester, I posted his cut on here when it happened on the 27th.
He’s 6’3 303, been playing primarily RG. Billy Turner seems really penciled in there.
But we’ll see if the FO thinks they need to pay the 32yo vet to come here. He has been durable over his career. He’s serviceable but not spectacular…IMO.

Falcons LB Prince Shembo was reportedly arrested in Gwinnett (GA) on accusations of killing his girlfriend’s dog.
Shembo has reportedly been charged with felony animal cruelty after kicking and ultimately killing the dog. A 2014 fourth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame, Shembo is competing for playing time at outside linebacker in new coach Dan Quinn’s defense. The arrest won’t help his chances of earning the coaching staff’s trust, and could potentially lead to league discipline.

Piggy, Dubs is short for Dubyas, as in George Dubya Bush.
The GW’s
Just read the Mando article and yeah its like he read what i posted, or did i post mine after he posted his about Chris Chester?
John Denney will be 37 in late Dec. He’s a FA in 2017, until then he’s costing us just over $1M per year.
Time to start thinking about his replacement.
The guy’s been an iron man. He’s also excellent at what he does.
Yup, I hope he can go for the next 2 years!
Possible replacements could be Jeff Luc, Stoneburner…..
Wouldn’t that be something, if Jeff Luc replaced him? While still be groomed as an LB.
Fuck Shembo !! What a Dick…
Garrard to NFL Network: Tannehill a franchise quarterback
Well does this cause a conflict error in Omar’s tiny little processor?
Its a loop in the logic, id like to see what happens, my best is smoke eminates from the coconut braids.
Here’s where Bucky Brooks of NFL.com put us on his most talented roster list:
——————
#7) Miami Dolphins
Blue chips (6): LT Branden Albert, TE Jordan Cameron, CB Brent Grimes, C Mike Pouncey, DT Ndamukong Suh, DE Cameron Wake.
On the rise: DE Olivier Vernon.
It’s now or never for fourth-year coach Joe Philbin, given the impressive work done by Miami’s front office to fill out this roster. The Dolphins have assembled a championship-caliber defense with one of the top front sevens in football. Wake, Suh and Vernon will overwhelm opponents at the point of attack, allowing Grimes to snag wayward tosses from quarterbacks attempting to flee the pressure. Miami’s offensive line features a pair of studs in Albert and Pouncey. The athletic duo is not only ideally suited for Bill Lazor’s zone-based scheme, but both guys possess the strength to move defenders off the ball on downhill runs. They are part of a revamped O-line that could emerge as one of the strengths of the squad. If Cameron can just stay on the field, he gives Miami a big, athletic pass catcher between the hashes. The tight end could anchor a passing game that is dramatically improved in 2015.
Stanger, good post there, but Tannehill should’ve been among the Blue Chippers or at the very least ‘On the Rise’.
I agree and was thinking same thing, i just didnt want to summon Randy back so fast to rebut.
LOL
Good point, but it is the guy’s article after all. The ones I would question are whether Tanny is at the same level at QB as Cameron and Pouncey are at theres. No problems with the other ones.
Cameron has shown definite flashes, but hasn’t stayed on the field consistently as Tannehill has…nor Pouncey for that matter. Pouncey also looked less than capable as a OG.
With that logic getter, what do you think of Gronk?
A New Jersey man whose last name is Bacon was arrested after a dispute over sausage, according to police.
Thomas Bacon, 19, allegedly attacked another person at a Madison home on May 12 for eating the last piece of sausage, NJ.com reports.
Bacon was charged with simple assault and released pending a court appearance, according to NJ.com.
It was not clear if Bacon had an attorney or is an attorney.
Ok, I did ad lib the last 4 words….lol
Not sure if that guy is an attorney, but I do know who the prosecutor will be.
