OTAs started this week so there is a bunch of new news.

According to Chris Habib of the Palm Beach Post, Devante Parker is developing chemistry with Ryan Tannehill fast.  Woop Woop!

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald highlights some of the positional battles in OTAs.  Notably, Jay Ajayi is the front runner to backup Lamar Miller.

Bill Lazor acknowledges in discussing the deep ball “We’ve got to figure it out together”.  Fans still argue over whether it was a problem and who’s fault it was…

The NBA Finals are set.  Why mention it in “Dolphins News”?  Because Mike Tannenbaum helped make it happen.  He was the agent for each team’s head coach (Steve Kerr and David Blatt) when they signed with their respective teams.

My “TK Show” conversation with NFL exec Mike Tannenbaum, former agent for both Steve Kerr and David Blatt

Charles Clay had a breakout 2014 season, this came from the Patriots behind enemy lines article from our last blog, and why I take non everyday Fins writers writings with a grain of salt.

    • steveccnv says:

And I could add this to the IDK-WTF-ITA group of reporters

and seemed to be the guy Ryan Tannenhill would go to as a security blanket. I do think it was a good move though for Miami not re-signing Clay who was a restricted free agent and was given a big offer sheet by the Buffalo Bills, more than what he is worth.

Here you go Wyoming… down to three choices for you new avi…. I’ll get some other input then decide lol:

hey moderator? My previous post is “awaiting” 😉

  5. getterdone says:

Eagles LG Evan Mathis’ agent Drew Rosenhaus said the Dolphins are not a “strong possibility” for the disgruntled guard.
“I’ve been given permission by the Eagles to shop Evans,” Rosenhaus said in a radio interview. “We thought we had a trade with another team leading up to the Draft. It was not the Dolphins.” Coach Chip Kelly has said Mathis has been available to trade for two offseasons, but to this point Rosenhaus has yet to find a partner. Mathis is not happy, but he will likely remain an Eagle for at least one more season.

  6. steveccnv says:

One of the vegas o/u for the season has us at 8.5 wins and the cheats at 9.5, another one has us at 8 and the cheats at 11.

  8. getterdone says:

Piggy, Kelly likely wants way too much for a 34 (Nov 1st) OG who only played 9 games las season.

    • Rhino says:

Tim… I was scrolling this a.m. To respond to question yesterday, I was in Alaska conducting a College Board workshop for A.P. U.S. History teachers. Only had half a day to site see, but drove to see Mt. McKinley. Got back to hotel… and since it wasn’t dark yet I thought I’d get a beer at the hotel bar.. the bar was closed because it was midnight LOL. ‘dusk’ was as dark as it got.

  12. getterdone says:

    James Walker, ESPN Staff Writer
DAVIE, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins had six games last season when they failed to score at least 20 points and were 1-5 in those games. A major reason was inconsistency in the red zone.

The Dolphins were ranked 21st in the NFL last season in red zone efficiency, which must improve if they want to make the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Too often Miami settled for field goals last season. The Dolphins scored touchdowns in just 51.5 percent of their red zone trips.

Dolphins offensive coordinator Bill Lazor is taking on the challenge this offseason to fix the issue.

“Let’s put it on me,” Lazor said this week during organized team activities. “We’ve put the responsibility on me to evaluate the guys that we have and to use each of them the way they can best be used in the red zone. That’s the promise I’ve made to them.”

Miami’s issues in the red zone were two-fold. The Dolphins’ running game often wasn’t physical enough to gain yards deep in opponents’ territory, and the passing game wasn’t consistent close to the end zone.

The Dolphins made major changes at receiver and tight end this offseason to give Ryan Tannehill bigger targets. New tight end Jordan Cameron (6-foot-5) and first-round pick and wide receiver DeVante Parker (6-3) are long, athletic pass-catchers who should have success in the red zone.

“We worked on it in … on air, we were at a pretty high completion percentage on air, that’s a start,” Lazor explained. “I think that’s my responsibility, and the coaching staff, to evaluate the guys you have and use them how they should be used.”

    • Tim Knight says:

Bingo and Jennings 5-11 and Stills 6-0 have both had success in the red zone. Not to discount Landry at 5-11 who is a savvy WR with great hands. It’s not all about height, it’s how you attack the ball. They’re all hands catchers, not let it come to the body receivers.

  13. naplesfan2010 says:

Warriors starts with W so W[arrior]s so “W’s” so “Dubs”

  14. naplesfan2010 says:

Some fans are not going to be happy to hear that the Dolphins are not interested in Mathis, but I think what it says is that the coaches are happy with the men we have at OG at least for this season.

    • wyoming85 says:

Or they think Mathis is not an upgrade?

      • getterdone says:

I think Mathis is in decline. The return on the cost to get him is likely a huge factor as well.

    • Tim Knight says:

I’ve said it since FA and the draft, our staff seems committed to who we have and expect it to get settled with who we have. We finally drafted a pure LG in the 4th in Douglas to add to the competition but many fans thought that wasn’t enough. We’ll see.

Albert has been rehabbing well and has about 2 more months before TC. Getting him back at LT, putting James back at RT and Pouncey back at C is the key. The guard position should not define your season.

      • getterdone says:

Year 2 in Lazor’s offense and establishing a running game will allow Tanny to help out his OL too.
        Randy will be happy!

  15. getterdone says:

Tim, also it’s about gaining quick separation in limited space. These new receivers we have demonstrated that in the past.
Also, we’ll need better running in the red zone. Pound out the tough yards.

    • Tim Knight says:

Receivers who fight for the ball which Wallace rarely did though he did make a few very nice contested catches. But he also threw his hands up and gave up similar to Marshall and I hate that shit.

  16. getterdone says:

Everytime we score a TD, we should use Suh for the 2pt conversion. Who can stop him from gaining 2 yards? 😉

  17. getterdone says:

    Mr. Red Zone!

  18. Mike E. says:

I think we’re not interested in giving up anything to get Mathis. I think if he were cut, we’d call him. I don’t read any more into it than that. I think he’d be a clear upgrade over what we have now.

  19. Brian in NY says:

    Piggy,
    Make sure you hit Minnesota’s!

  20. Rhino says:

    OK Wyoming…

You’re new avi through the NBA Finals is: Harden’s Kleenex 🙂

  21. Mike E. says:

Mathis in decline is better than Thomas or Turner. Greg Jennings is in decline too, but he’s still better than most of the receivers on our team.

    • stangerx says:

No doubt he would be an upgrade, but that comes at about $6 mil per year plus whatever they want in trade for him. Plus sounds like he could be a cap cut.

  22. wyoming85 says:

    Here ya go Rhino!

  23. The Flying Pig says:

    What do you guys think?

    Should I?

  24. Ken says:

Beautiful day up here in the northeast today. Hot but not oppressive heat. Went out to a nice restaurant down by the water. They have a nice boardwalk down by the beach, had a great stroll. Went up and down the piers and jettys. It was a nice day. I just had to say that.

  25. The Flying Pig says:

I’m defiantly getting that dolphin cover
But I’m not parking on the streets with that cover on my jeep
Jests fucks will slash my tires
However I will be driving my jeep to fla in October for the fest (I think)
So that seems like the time to do it

  26. steveccnv says:

Vinny Tyler Sporting News, more national media that don’t know WTF they’re talking about.

Best move: Signing Ndamukong Suh — This one’s easy. They paid the price to get the game’s most dominant defensive lineman, and they will reap the dividends on a front that already features Cameron Wake. Suh alone can push them toward that playoff-berth breakthrough.

Worst move: Trading for Kenny Stills — It cost them a third-round pick and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe to acquire the former Saints wide receiver. Stills is a speedy outside talent, but in retrospect as the team also added Devante Parker, Greg Jennings and Jordan Cameron to the passing game, it was a superfluous move for a target who doesn’t mesh with Ryan Tannehill’s lack of arm strength.

That’s news to me that RT has a lack of arm strength. Because he isn’t good on the long ball it means he has a weak arm.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      His arm strength is awesome
He just hasn’t been accurate with the deep ball

Some one was reading Ryan Tannehill instead if watching him
      Tanny has a cannon
But this guy think bc we have a short passing game and not a high success rate at deep balls it makes Tanny, chad Pennington

      Lol @giving up Ellerbee
The writer doesn’t know much about our offense of he thinks having Stills, Landry, Jennings, Cameron and Parker is superfluous

Maybe we should have drafted a FB…lol

      • steveccnv says:

Then he goes on to say SFs best move was not resigning Gore, and the Colts best move was signing Gore.

    • steveccnv says:

Here’s another thing Tyler says the Vikings worst move was trading for Wallace, but Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post writes former Dolphins receiver Mike Wallace is fitting in well with the Minnesota Vikings. I think Wallace will do very well in Minn. with Teddy at QB, they seem like they should be a good fit.

  27. The Flying Pig says:

…then he realized his head was perfect for brick smashing

  28. wyoming85 says:

Careful who you date there Piggy

  29. Mike E. says:

Good morning! Beautiful day in the NE, Joisey specifically. I have a doubleheader coming up at 11:30AM, I hope it’s not too hot by then. We’re playing a very good team this week, we have to at least split though.

  30. jetsssuck says:

university of florida girls softball team is playing auburn at 1pm. If they win they are in championship of college world series for womans softball and going for back to back championships. One of my friends that lived down the street from me when I was growing up went to Auburn. We could be playing Michigan for the championship in a best of 3. I wonder who Mr.Ross who will be routing for considering he graduated from University of Michigan and he flunked out of University of Florida.

    • steveccnv says:

Does your daughter play for the Gators?

      • jetsssuck says:

my daughter graduated from uf about 14-15 yrs ago. She played volleyball and soccer in HS but in college she concentrated on graduating. She graduated in 3 yrs with degree in pharmacy. My son is a different story he was a party animal and I don’t think he would have ever left college if I continued paying for his education. He took 5.5 years to finish with a degree in business.

    • steveccnv says:

So what’s the fascination with college softball? Do you have a thingy for Bull Dikes?

  31. steveccnv says:

I can see why Mike talks about his softball team, OD talks about lots of off the wall stuff, so I’ll just chalk it up to one of the oddities of this board, but was just curious as to the fascination.

    • jetsssuck says:

it’s a sport that is amazing. The fast pitching is amazingly fast and hitting these pitching is even more amazing. Most of the woman softball players hold the bat differently to gain leverage of the bat because of the speed of the pitching fastballs. The gators have a player who won 30 games this year and she broke the record for home runs. They are comparing her to B.Ruth

  32. stangerx says:

SI’s analysis of our first round pick mirrors my thoughts on a certain wideout I may be looking to pick up in FF.
    ————————-
    14. Dolphins: DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville

GRADE: A Parker is a complete nightmare for cornerbacks when the ball is in the air. From the outset he ought to be Ryan Tannehill’s go-to weapon in the red zone.

  33. Tim Knight says:

I love when writers talk about teams they know nothing about. It makes for great comedy. LOL

  34. wyoming85 says:

So what’s the fascination with college softball? Do you have a thingy for Bull Dikes?

they all arent bd’s. some are hot lipstick lesbians. that and the game is fun to watch and they are athletic as hell, makes it worth the time.

but you didnt ask me you asked jetssuck. he only watches it so if they win the championship he can trash the coach in a few years.

    • jetsssuck says:

only if he made the players juice and he is unethical without any consideration of a players long term health.

  36. finfanrob says:

hey any of you guys ever meet wyoming’s wife. i hear she played softball in school. bet steve thinks she is a bull dyke.

    • steveccnv says:

Didn’t everyone see North Dallas Forty back in the late ’70s? The movie made it known that pain killers were used frivolously and that the players knew what they were doing. They all knew, if they weren’t on the field enough there was a chance they weren’t going to last long, so it’s a decision they had to make. Same type of thing with steroids, you ask the players knowing what you now know would you still take them and most say yes. It’s the same ole song and dance, someone trying to get something for nothing.

Cigarettes is the same thing, you can’t tell me people in the ’50s didn’t know smoking causes health risks. Well no one ever told me, yeah dumbass you put some manufactured non nutritious substance into your body, what do you think would happen.

So we’ve gone from an ignorant wholesome society to a cheatin’, lyin’, money hungry society in about 50 yrs.

      • jetsssuck says:

when I idiolzided the Miami Dolphins during the late 60′ and 70’s during their SB years the SD Chargers were fined for giving out speed to their players and Don Shula said the dolphins didn’t do things like the chargers. Little did we know Shula /Howard Shelleburger was no better during the early years of the greatest time in Dolphin history.

  37. stangerx says:

“One of the things that I appreciate with the Vikings is their resolve to say ‘we’re not trading him. That tells me they value him not only as a football player, but what he’s done for the organization.

“I actually, as an agent, not only appreciate it — I accept it. But actions speak louder than words. If that’s going to happen, and you want to keep him, then show him a commitment to make him retire as a Viking. And I haven’t had that solution.”

    ———————
That’s AP’s agent. Peterson has three years and $45 mil left on his contract. After what happened last year take some serious cajohes to now be asking for a better deal.

    • Tim Knight says:

He’s also 30 and that’s the danger zone for RBs. How about AP plays out the contract he signed?

    • steveccnv says:

That’s what I’ve been thinking. AP has no leverage, and now has serious off-field issues, yet his agent wants to “Belicheat” the situation. Well the organization didn’t back him during his tough time. They didn’t want the bad pub. The Vikes seem to be taking the stance of we have the leverage and plan to use it to the full extent.

    • steveccnv says:

What are cajohes? sounds like an ingredient in Jetsssucks watermelon and fried chicken recipe 😛

      • stangerx says:

LOL — guess you just don’t speak preppy spangslang. Come to the fest and I’ll bring a copy of the secret dictionary.

      • steveccnv says:

I grew up with spanglesh, but I never heard that word, maybe cajones.

      • steveccnv says:

What I meant to say was, spanglesh I know, it’s your Stanglesh that…

      • stangerx says:

cojones is what I meant…….I was laughing my complete white boy preppy self more than anything. My last name should be Griswold.

  38. finfanrob says:

    jetssuck

yeah but that was only cause duriel was black. every one knows shula discriminated against the white players and forced them to take drugs. he was well known to only serve watermelon and fried chicken to feed the white guys telling them to eat up or get cut

  39. stangerx says:

Don’t think it was my fault, but I’m feeling like a shiot right now. Like five days before, my wife tells me she made plans on her B-Day to go out with one of her girlfriends for dinner. I was like, “that’s not right……was going to take you to dinner any place you wanted and you didn’t even ask me about it first.” After a few go arounds she canceled and we did just that.

Friend just showed up and told my wife she had a surprise party planned with like seven of her other girlfriends.

    • jetsssuck says:

gotta be flexible in marriages I learned. If it makes her happy on her BDay then so be it.

      • stangerx says:

JS — key thing is I didn’t know what was planned. If I did I would have been a willing co-conspirator.

      • jetsssuck says:

some days you have to go with the flow. Think of it adding coins to your piggy bank and you are winning in the long run with a bank of favors to be returned 10 fold.

    • steveccnv says:

Saying I was going to take you to dinner any place you wanted doesn’t cut it. She wants to know you made an effort to plan something, but yeah the friends maybe should’ve talked to you.

      • stangerx says:

Yep — I get in trouble for not planning enough to show I care, but was at least going to set up at a real nice place with a bottle of champagne already iced when we got there. Not what the girlfriend had set up……but then I was presented with a casual dinner with just her.

  40. stangerx says:

“Everything. From on the field to off the field to how to carry yourself as a man, just anything and everything you can learn from Greg. It’s a blessing for him to be here. I love picking his brain every day.”

    — Stills on what he can learn from Jennings.

    • steveccnv says:

I hope these guys mean a few % of all this BS they’ve been saying in the offseason, especially Phillips.

  41. naplesfan2010 says:

    Stills sounds sincere.

  42. naplesfan2010 says:

I wanted Jennings instead of Wallace back then.
I also think Phillips sounds sincere.

  43. Tim Knight says:

Phillips was pretty candid about not doing enough in college to impress scouts as a 1st rd pick because of work ethic issues. He basically said he has to work to change that. If he does we’ll be the beneficiaries because at 6-5 330 he’s a powerful, athletic guy who can move and be disruptive.

    • stangerx says:

I’m pleased by Phillips, but it has more to do with what others say about him than others do. When beat reporters who have covered the NFL for decades say “you can’t understand how huge and fit he is till you stand next to him”…….you get the idea.

      • steveccnv says:

There’s no question he’s very talented, but you can’t make it in the NFL on talent alone. If he had lived up to his potential at OU he’d have been in the discussion when the jets picked at #6.

I think at least in the early stages it won’t be an issue, because he won’t play enough snaps to have to worry about taking plays off, so when he’s actually playing we should get his best.

I also think the coaches at OU let him get away with it, but now that it’s common knowledge that he’s been a slacker, I doubt the Fins coaches let him get away with it.

      • stangerx says:

I don’t think Suh will let him get away with it. A DT who plays 80% of the snaps……dude has some combination of motor and desire.

  44. naplesfan2010 says:

    unverified quote I just saw:
outside of the divisions for 2014 it was:

    8-2 Patriots
    7-2-1 Bengals
    7-3 Steelers, Ravens, Chargers
    6-4 Broncos, Chiefs
5-5 Colts, Texans, Browns, Bills, Dolphins,

    • steveccnv says:

the AFC South played the NFC South and feasted. For us again we’re middle of the pack. Omar is right about the Colts and Luck feasting on a weak division.

  45. naplesfan2010 says:

Later it said that the best win pcg resides in the afc east as a div since 2000.

  46. jetsssuck says:

well guys good talking with u guys. Gator time. My wife married me she once told me is because I can spell U.

  47. naplesfan2010 says:

    also
“Something encouraging about new Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi: Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon (San Diego’s first-round pick) and Ajayi were the only two college running backs who caused opposing defensive players to miss more than 60 tackles last season, ESPN’s KC Joyner told us. No other back had more than 50.”

    • steveccnv says:

That’s good for us since Miller doesn’t exactly break tackles.

      • Tim Knight says:

Not many backs get yards as quickly as Miller though. He’s a very explosive and decisive runner, doesn’t dance, gets it and goes. Miller, Ajayi and Williams is a nice RB group. All have good size and speed and can catch the ball well.

They are one of the reasons I feel we’ll take the next step this year.

  48. naplesfan2010 says:

Interesting career move: Former Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman took a job as a high school coach at Nauset Regional in Massachusetts. Good for him.

  49. Tim Knight says:

Because of the way we spread the field, we open up the opportunities for our backs to catch those swing passes with a head of steam. We did it a lot last year and I could see that increasing with the 3 headed monster at tailback.

Not to count out Gillislee but he’s gonna have to have a great camp to work his way into the lineup. I’m not sure James with make it.

  50. naplesfan2010 says:

Can Gillislee run back kicks? He seemed fast in college, and he is big enough to take some punishment, and I thought he had good enough hands and “make ’em miss” feet. I would really like to take some of the minutes and hits off Landry.

    • Tim Knight says:

I think he worked at it in camp as a rookie but never did it in a game. He only has 3 rushes for 6 yards all as a rookie as he missed the entire year last year with a bad hamstring issue. We haven’t really seen enough of him and not at all in this offense and ZBS.

  51. finfanrob says:

wow. i cant believe stanger fucked up an all girl orgy for his wife. what an ass. i swear some guys only think about themselves.

  52. naplesfan2010 says:

Why does this site always not recognize that I just logged in? It always dumps me to an error message saying I need to sign in, but I just did that. I have to hit the back button and my whole posting message is lost. 😦

    • Tim Knight says:

I have to do that all the time. I post a . and then go back and post.

    • stangerx says:

It’s the internet age, and one I’m behind on. Just installed a new version of Java and it came with Ask.com being my home page without me at least noticing. I uninstalled and got back to google, but now all my settings are screwed up……guessing that came with whatever happened too.

The third year was the charm for Tannehill, but only after Week 3 nearly cost him. That’s when Tannehill’s dreadful performance against the Chiefs had coach Joe Philbin declining to endorse him. It was an absurd ploy, but a reminder that Tannehill’s journey from top-10 pick to franchise quarterback has rarely been smooth. Tannehill has a woeful deep ball. That means he better be great at everything else. In 2014, he was, completing 66.4 percent of his passes while offering a legitimate running threat out of the read option. Tannehill excelled in OC Bill Lazor’s quick-hitting attack, and the Dolphins responded by trying to enhance it for 2015. With Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills and Greg Jennings as three of his top-four receivers, Tannehill will focus underneath, an area where he’s one of the league’s better quarterbacks. The Dolphins have identified Tannehill’s strengths. As long as they continue to play to them, he should be under center for a long time in South Beach.

    • stangerx says:

Just have to point out that Peyton ain’t good on the deep ball either. The system matches our QB….least it does now.

  58. finfanrob says:

Looked really cheap and stupid until you asked what they were….answer was “we are sperm.”

lol. you should of just hung by them and when a girl ask, ‘who are they’ just say ‘sperm, and they just keep sticking to me no matter how much i try to shake them off’

  59. naplesfan2010 says:

The Miami Dolphins chose Gillislee in the fifth round, 164th pick overall, of the 2013 NFL Draft.
    He ran a 4.48 40 at the combine. He’s 5’11 216, still only 24 yrs old.

    • stangerx says:

Do think folks count out Gillislee too much. RBs have a way of bursting on the scene, and he’s been injured.

  60. stangerx says:

Johnny Football might not have all his issues done with….and this is at a golf tourney. Not exactly like walking into Metlife.

” A fan, Chase Fritz of Plano, Texas, told Yahoo Sports that he spotted Manziel yelling at someone and, later, throwing a water bottle at the fan. Manziel missed, and the other fan responded, “Hey, nice throw, Johnny.” Manziel, according to Fritz, became “super pissed,” “took off his hat,” and began walking toward the other man.

At that point, security officials in the area rounded up everyone, including Fritz and his father.”

  61. naplesfan2010 says:

Manziel = spoiled brat … McCown says there is not even a competition at QB for the Browns. He says he is the starter. Another writer says Manziel “looks like a fish out of water in the Browns new offense.”

  62. naplesfan2010 says:

Gillislee led the SEC in rushing his last yr at UF. The SEC is no slouch league, even if it’s not as good as the ACC.

isnt that kind of typical. every draft pick no matter what round is a bonafide star before they play one down, then after the first series in the first game they are all a bust. wasnt jordan going to made the fins SB contenders and he was going to kill brady?

but he was soooooooo good in college. who ever would have thought some one with little talent but could throw up a few prayers wouldnt make it in the nfl.

  66. Ken says:

Manziel will go down as one of the biggest first round busts ever. Well almost as much as Dion Jordan.

  67. Ken says:

Gillislee is done imo. Even when healthy he didn’t show as much as Williams did last year.

    • stangerx says:

Not with you on that. Thinking there will be a camp battle though.

      • Ken says:

I honestly don’t see it. Williams looked really good especially as a receiving option and he is a bigger more physical presence in the backfield which is something they wanted to focus on with our redzone issues the last couple of seasons. Gillislee at his best would essentially be Lamar Miller and that’s not what we are looking for.

    • Tim Knight says:

He was behind Miller and Thomas as a rookie. He really has no NFL body of work to go by and missed all of last season. Let’s see what he brings to the table this TC. I have no idea but he does have talent and was impressive his senior year.

  68. Tim Knight says:

Ken, we could keep 4 RBs easily but only make 3 active on game day. Miller, Ajayi, Williams and Gillislee. Let’s see what he shows, can’t see how anyone would know, we haven’t seen him since his rookie year in very limited action.

    • Ken says:

Anything could happen of course but I am not banking on it. I see Gillislee as gone. If he really surprises all the better for us but I am not counting on it.

  69. naplesfan2010 says:

Williams is the same height as Gillislee and only 5 pounds heavier. Their 40 times are identical. I think Gillislee is shiftier and quicker. I like Williams though.

    • Ken says:

But Williams is more of power runner. He will lower his shoulder on you and fight for extra yardage. Gillislee is more shiftiness and making people miss. Plus Williams looked really good as a receiver out of the backfield last year. He had some big plays in that role.

      • Tim Knight says:

Nothing wrong with having that kind of back as a backup in our ZBS. That’s why I want to see Gillislee in it. I think it fits his style of running. I’m not looking for him to replace Williams. I’m looking at possibly having 4 good backs.

  70. naplesfan2010 says:

Lamar Miller is bigger than D Williams. Miller is 5’10 but 224 (shorter AND heavier).
Ajayi is the same weight as Williams, but an inch taller.

  71. naplesfan2010 says:

So Miller is our biggest back. He is also our fastest.

    • Ken says:

Despite his size Miller doesn’t really run well in short yardage situations and his biggest drawback is that he really isn’t good at catching the ball out of the backfield.

      • Tim Knight says:

He was much better last year. After some early drops he got better and finished with 38 catches.

    • Tim Knight says:

He’s not small, he runs low to the ground and has super quick feet. Not all good backs plow people over. We have Ajayi and Williams competing for that role.

  72. Ken says:

    Tim:
I think it is unlikely we carry 4 backs especially since we may carry 6 WRs.

  73. naplesfan2010 says:

Gillislee scored 10 TDs in 12 games.

  74. naplesfan2010 says:

Gillislee looks very comfortable catching the ball even when it is thrown behind him.

  75. Ken says:

    Tim:
Miller caught more passes last year but I don’t think he was particularly effective out of the backfield and I actually think he got worse in that role as the year went on. Williams was much more effective in that role as was DT.

    • Ken says:

What Miller did very well in the passing game was that he really improved on blitz pick up and became a much better blocker in that role. His receiving skills are lacking. He is not very good at getting his head around to see the field ahead of him when catching out of the backfield.

      • Tim Knight says:

Up until last year I agree, I saw marked improvement last season though.

      • Ken says:

        Tim:
To me he looked better early in the season catching the ball but later in the year he seemed to be his same old self when it came to catching out of the backfield. It’s just what I saw. I really think he made great strides as a runner last year and I think he is the no. 1 back on the team but I just don’t think he will ever be a great weapon out of the backfield. Williams we know can be and Ajayi was a really good receiving back in college.

I think it is unlikely we carry 4 backs especially since we may carry 6 WRs.

one QB and 7,586 offensive line men and the offense may work. well that is if they can play 5,236 linemen at the same time.

  77. naplesfan2010 says:

Miller makes some really nice catches and runs afterwards at the :04 seconds and the :15 seconds marks and also at 1:15, 1:40, 3, and 3:10, 5:50, and 6 minute marks. etc.
Miller also puts his shoulder down and smashes into guys and falls forward at the end of many of his runs.

  78. Ken says:

Gotta run. Peace to you all.

    ——————-
Naples — he’s got talent in that area. WIlliams does too, but not thinking Miller does. Yeah he caught some more last year, but it just doesn’t come natural to him. He needs someone else as a compliment. What I don’t know is how Ajayi is on far as catching passes goes.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

Miller looks real nifty catching the ball on the highlights up above.
Ajayi caught 50 balls for 535 yds last year.

      • stangerx says:

Sounds like Ajayi might that option too then. Still not buying Miller as a huge pass catching option, but he did improve on it last year.

  81. naplesfan2010 says:

  82. Mike E. says:

Ajayi also broke more tackles because he had a shit-ton of carries, 347 last season to be exact. I still give him a lot of credit, and I expect him to really help our team this season.

    • stangerx says:

      How’d the play two go?

      • Mike E. says:

It went pretty awful actually. We played a good team, and once again we had some key players missing, but we didn’t show up today. It was brutal out there, sunny, hot and very humid about 90 degrees. First game I played RF, and didn’t get a lot of action. We were right in that game until the 5th inning, it was 2-1, and then they just started hitting everything everywhere, and they ended up winning 12-2. I pitched the 2nd game, and it was 6-6 in the 7th, at least 3 unearned runs (errors), and then they won it the bottom of the 7th, 7-6. Bad day for our team. The opposing pitcher in the 1st game was nothing, and we let him off the hook time and time again. Back to the drawing board.

      • stangerx says:

I’m sorry Mike E. If it helps any, I once was in a rugby game where we lost 103-3. Sounds like you pitched pretty well though. Least you can walk away with that.

  83. The Flying Pig says:

Things got pretty hectic this weekend…

  84. Mike E. says:

Thanks Stanger. I could have pitched better, but to be honest, I was so exhausted because of the heat, as was the other pitcher. By game 2, it was at it’s hottest, game start was 1PM, and it was merciless. We need to hit better and field better, or we’ll have no business in the playoffs. That’s the truth man.

    • stangerx says:

Can’t believe I am giving heat advice to a guy from Jersey. Wake up on the hot days and start chugging gatorade. And drink it during the game too. Yes you have to keep the fluid level up, but those electroytes are more than just an advertising thing.

I drank water before I played, and during the game I drank a 32oz bottle of gatorade, and another 16oz of water.

    • stangerx says:

      Make it all Gatorade.

      • stangerx says:

Should add I once to the hospital because of the same. Imagine how my stuff on the field was effected before it hit that point.

      • Mike E. says:

I’ve had a couple of scares myself. I remember when I was about 39, pitched a double header in 95 + degree weather, and I felt like I was about to pass out. I went into my car, turned on the AC, but I was definitely totally overheated. I think the AC saved me from passing out.

      • stangerx says:

I actually made it back from the away tourney (played two games in 90+) but just drank water on the way home. Passed out face down in a sushi place while drinking a beer three hours later and got carted off. ER doc said I killed my electrolytes and the water lowered the percentage into “tilt.”

  88. stangerx says:

And we biotch about how much guys on our team get per tackle, sack or reception……..and where’s Bookman?

BACK FROM A SUCCESSFUL CONVENTION IN JACKSONVILLE.. At one point on our return trip to Tampa, me and Mrs. OD were less than 20 miles from the U. of Florida’s baseball field when Florida Atlantic was eliminating South Florida from the regional NCAA playoffs. The day before, FAU eliminated FAMU from the tourney. Their reward? A shot at the 5th ranked Gators on their home field. FAU eventually lost to Florida 2-1 in a game that could have gone either way. But give the Gators credit; they played just a bit better and probably deserved to win despite benefiting from an outrageously bad call at first base in the bottom of the 9th. Had the correct call been made, FAU eventually would have scored the tying run. I’d sure like to see instant reply in the NCAA college playoffs!! –Meanwhile, FAU head coach John McCormack, his staff and players, certainly deserve high marks for another terrific season of Owls’ baseball. They certainly have one of the top programs in Division I college baseball.

Proudly wore a Dolphins shirt Friday Night to a sports bar to watch the Lightning clinch the Eastern Conference crown and a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals. –A Jags’ fan, commenting on last season’s 27-13 Miami win at Jacksonville, said “this season, the Jags will pound the Dolphins big-time!” – – I laughed and said, “the only thing you’ll be pounding is the air when DeVante Parker flies by your secondary for a touchdown!” He then displayed his ignorance by asking “WHO is this Parker guy?”

    • steveccnv says:

We all know sports isn’t on the level, take baseball, because it’s the easiest, all they have to do is use the machine/computer to call balls and strikes and that would eliminate 99% of the controversy, the other 1% would be taken care of with replay.

  91. steveccnv says:

All these guys look great in the highlight films, to really evaluate we need every touch or every offensive play when they’re in the game. Miller looks great on his highlight plays and not so great on some I remember from last yr., catching the ball he particularly didn’t look so hot, but better than previous yrs.
