Player Profile at Mustachio Cuts: Jordan Phillips

Entrare! Welcome back to Mustachio Cuts a place to talk Miami Dolphins football and facial hair!

jordanPhillips5You won’t believe the appuntamento I have today…Jordan Phillips, the Dolphins segundo pick!  Applausi!  (Mustachio claps)

I can’t wait for the big elefante to get here.  I made some nice desserts for him.  Oh, you no know? Mustachio a capocuoco too!

Here he is!   Come in Mr. Jordan Phillips.

MustachioBarberChair

Come in!  Si Accomodi at Mustachios!  I’m so glad to have you here.  (he dusts off his chair)  What a good pick you were.  Magnifico Pick!

Some people say they no come the pick.  They volere a linebacker or a defensive back.  Or even Offensive line.  But not Mustachio…Mustachio knows that with Suh up front our defense can be il migliore if we get Suh some amici to play with.  And the Dolphins took you!  Affanculo!

Buona Fortuna for the Dolphins you were there for us in the 2nd round.

JordanPhillips1

I made some treats for you.  I hope you like cannoli.  What do I parlare?  Everyone likes cannoli.  Look at this whole plate of cannolis!

I made 20 to represent all your solo tackles at Oklahoma.  What a run stuffer you were at Oklahoma! At 6’5, 329 pounds, what else should we have expected.

MusatchiowCannolis

Have a cannoli.  But just uno.  Mustachio has lots of other customers.  And they all come with empty stomaco!

If you take more than one, I will slap you hands away like you did to all the offensive lineman who tried to hold you!

Okay okay…you can have two…but only because you came back from a back injury in 2013 to start every game in 2014.  Impressionante!

But just two okay…I don’t want you to have trouble with your backflips on Musatchio’s account!

PlatewithCrumbs

Hey Jordan Phillips?  What happened to all the cannolis???  Affanculo!  When I wasn’t looking?

Hopefully you can still backflip?  You are a freak athlete, no?  Very rapido and agile!  Rob Rang compared you to pro bowler Dontari Poe before the draft and called your athleticism and size eye popping!

MusatchiowZeppoli

Eye popping like this plate of Zeppoles!  Mmmmmm!

Deliziosio no?

Okay this time Mustachio means it.  Just one!

Mustachio heard that you were tearing it up in rookie camp.  Impressing everyone early.

That is good…maybe you can make a push to start and take the starting job from Earl Mitchell.  Mitchell played well last year, but the   cielo is the limit for Jordan Phillips.  Next to Suh, you can be a force!

JordanPhillips2

You will have to keep up your impressive performances in OTAs, training camp and preseason.

The libro on Jordan Phillips is that he is pigro…(whispering) and pigro is bad…

But what do you expect people to say when the guy is big, athletic and strong and did not dominate at the college level?

PlatewithCrumbs2

Hey Jordan Phillips…not the zeppoles too!

What an appetite for pasticceria you have?

Too bad you don’t play against italian desserts…

hmmm…that give’s Mustachio an idea…

BradyCannoli

Now you can have all the cannoli you want!!!

What a game yesterday between Auburn and Florida.I can’t remember a baseball or softball game so well played by both teams especially pitching and defense. Now only 2 teams are left for the championship in a best of 3. Gators and Wolverines advanced to the best-of-three championship series that begins Monday (ESPN2, 8 p.m. ET).
I wonder who Mr.Ross is rooting for considering he graduated from Michigan and flunked out of University of Florida.

Nice Piggy! Nothing like zeppoles- We used to get them all the time at carnivals and street fairs. I can’t blame him for eating the whole plate!

    That’s hilarious Pig.
He better be better than Johnson and Johnson, or it’s a wasted pick. Odrick was Big Ten DPotY and a 1st rounder, but we expect more production out of Phillips? Tennessee took Starks in the 3rd, but he made the pro bowl a couple times. Here’s hoping Phillips does too. Soliai was a 4th rounder, if you want to compare behemoths. I do think Phillips is more agile than Big Paul.

In the final season of Seinfeld:

Jerry made $13,000 for each line delivered on screen.
Jason Alexander (George) $11,000 for each line.
    Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Elaine) $13,000.
Michael Richards (Kramer) $15,000 per line.

    Stanger,

Where is Bookman on this list????

Jerry and his joy boys were making all the money. He certainly made enough to pay a lousy library fine.

Good job Piggs, next time can Mustachio have healthy snacks out when the behemoths show up instead of baked goods. A plate of carrots and celery instead of a whole tiramisu would be good.

    Darren Rizzi on ST:

“It’s funny, when you get a chance to sit back and really evaluate, we did a real good job this past season when the other team had the ball,” Rizzi said. “For example, when they were kicking to us, when they were punting to us or they were kicking field goals, we were in the tops in the league in all those categories — field goal block percentage, kickoff return average, we obviously blocked a bunch of punts and had some big plays there.

“We need to get better this season and improve when we have the ball. Our field goal percentage needs to improve. Brandon Fields has been a tremendous player in this league for a lot of years, but he had a little bit of a down year this year for him. He still finished 11th in the league, but for him that was a down year. And then the same thing with our kickoff coverage. Those are the three areas that we need to improve on.”
    *
Fields had already got right and was booming the ball at the end of the year and we have to assume he’ll be fine and his one slump was a fluke or just that his one slump.
It’s Sturgis that really needs to improve, he has to get his kicks deeper (and that was supposed to be his calling card) and he of course has to become a more accurate and clutch FG kicker.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I saw that interview with Rizzi. He believes Sturgis has a ton of talent and can take his game to another level. He noted that Sturgis was hurt during TC and the PS and didn’t really kick until the opener. He said Sturgis works his ass off and is in the building working on something all the time.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Thanks Tim, that’s encouraging news on Sturgis. I read the interview instead of watching it.

  9. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Nashville Tennessean
When asked about Justin Hunter, coach Ken Whisenhunt said, “At some point, you either get it or you won’t be in this league anymore. That’s the natural order of the NFL.”
The Titans continue to try to wake Hunter up from his career-long doldrums. Last year, they outfitted him in a practice jersey that said JAG (just a guy) on the back — even though he’s 6-foot-4 with 4.4 speed and serious leaping ability. That didn’t work and we doubt Whiz’s comments will light a fire under Hunter either.

Lets just hope his back problems are behind him…the hot Fla weather should be help in that regard. Maybe Wake will get him into some yoga.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Phillips is a pro now and realized that when he signed a 4 year $4+M deal. He’ll realize it more when he’s around grown men who take this seriously and it’s not college anymore. He seems like an intelligent guy, not one of those excuse makers who’s clueless. I’m not worried about him at the moment.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

It’s certainly part of the larger equation. Lets face it, the NFL is a marketing business in perpetual branding mode.

Tim, China is dredging up the ocean floor to build islands for military purposes. They want to control the hotly contested South China Seas, as well as force the weakened US under BO to play by their rules in the vastly used shipping lanes as well.
The Chinese have been fast tracking their military might recently by committing to building warships, aircraft carriers, etc.
They know conflict/war is coming with the world in a financial crisis. It’s inevitable.

You guys never listen to me when i tell you about my Florida boys…I think Jenkins proved himself last year. Gillislee i am hoping gets a chance to because i know how good he is at RB, very well rounded back. Sturgis i was pretty shocked has started out slowly. He was amazing in college, and i think he is just settling in and getting his confidence. Only way i can explain how a kicker in College has not looked as sharp in pro’s. Kicking game pretty much the same as it is in college, so usually translates almost perfectly. He has a very strong leg so would be awesome if he got it all together.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

GD, not to get into long winded political discussions, but with technology advancing at crazy rates and the information age basically real time, our country and the world as we knew it stands no chance of staying the way it was. You can’t be isolated and competitive on the world scale.

Not saying pols do everything that’s best for America, just that the reason many feel these are troubling times is because we’ve never seen technology like this. When scientists say Artificial Intelligence could be the biggest threat to mankind, you know we’re actually living science fiction now.

  24. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Jenkins is solid
Sturgis has sucked so far – he needs to get consistent
I don;t know about Gillesee, he hasn’t even seen the field

right now Mille, Ajayi and Williams are manning the RB position
but I think we keep 4 on the roster right?

  25. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim, agreed…I’m not trying to go into political bashing…in fact it’s both parties on this TPP fiasco.
Also agreed on the rapidly expanding technology. Man will be his own undoing once again as he tries to become God. A Google CEO thinks man can become immortal by 2050….LMAO! Not gonna happen.

  26. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Sturgis has the physical ability…right now, it lies in his head as to how good he can be.
Kicking is somewhat like a golf swing. If you can conquer the mental aspect of the game with some consistency, then you’ll do well.

  27. I hate both political parties; nothing will ever get done because when a Repulbican is in the White House and the Dems control Congress everything the prez tries to do is blocked; we have a Dem prez with a Republican Congress and same. I wish we could just abolish the party system. That is all.

Depends on what state your in. There are a lot of solid legislators out there. And the party divides often aren’t nearly as set in stone. Lot of places they actually work together for what they think makes sense.

    • I have voted for both Republicans & Democrats and have been affiliated with both parties and campaigned for our last two Presidents because I was sure they could make positive changes for our country. But because Congress has been ruled by the opposition it’s a total joke. I’m an Independent now and unless someone I feel is worthy I just may not vote. Not gonna vote for Mr.(s) Clinton and there are zero Republicans I would vote for,

They should put Gillislee back there too, he was a good returner in college and its a way he can earn a spot. I think the last RB spot may come down to if James/Gillislee impress in ST play. I think though Christion Jones is the best option for us in return game, really good returner.

TBH i think he would make sa good receiver for us as well. He was pretty good even opposite the guy who got all the damn looks in Amari Cooper. WR’s in our offense operate much like a return specalist. Ball quickly in their hands, make moves through traffic and break it for big YAC. I think he actually fits our offense pretty well. Im kinda torn between he and Byrd, but i think he fits us better than Byrd

    • D's avatar D says:

Jones has a 14 yar per reception average at Alabama. Not huge yardage totals but a lot of that was that it was all about Amari Cooper and the RB’s there. Very little love to the other receivers.

CB/WR play is a lot more relatable in OTA’s than say trench play, or RB/QB’s. Some Db’s, specifically press DB’s wont have the advantage of using their size/physicality in no contact drills but still its a pretty close representation. Bodes pretty good for Taylor.

The guy has been doing this how long and how many times do coaches have to tell him they try different things with guys especially this time of year to see how they respond. It’s like every year is the first time for these reporters.

Devante Parker gets jammed by Jamar Taylor and bobbles the ball, but pulls down the catch. Great play by both. Taylor is physical.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what I like about Taylor, he’s not afraid to mix it up and he can tackle. He just needs to stay healthy and we have a fine young corner.

So now we know that the perfect result in an OTA is to cause the receiver to bobble the ball and make a spectacular catch

This is probably a stupid question, but when they are going without pads how does the OL try to block against the DL. Do they just try to stay in their path to the QB with the understanding that there will be no bull rushes?

It’s all fundamental stuff. This is for the team to get ready for TC, not for reporters to tell us what stage the team is at. It’s fun for us but we should all know better. Does anyone even think about the PS once the RS starts? Well think about OTAs.

  91. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

All you can ask for at these OTA is for players to show good instincts.
Everyone’s timing is off at this point and nobody is allowed to use their power so basically the only positions that are even capable of showing anything are the WR/DB/QB.
DL/OL evaluations are worthless as those are positions that emphasize power.
