The Fringe – Defensive End

The Fringe

Defensive End

by son of a son of a shula

The Miami Dolphins have seven players battling for a spot on the final roster at the Defensive End position. Sure locks include  starters Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon while Derrick Shelby who is entering his fourth season and Terrence Fede a 7th round pick last year appear to have the inside track to round out the position. Fede offers versatility as a player who can move inside from time to time. Should the Dolphins carry five DE’s then the battle royale will be between Emmanuel Dieke, Ray Drew and Kendall Montgomery the fringe players.

In order for these fringe players to have a shot at making the team they will first and foremost have to become reliable Special Teams players while showing pass rushing skills and ability to set the edge when they are getting reps with the Defense. It’s entirely possible that two of these 3 players could find themselves as part of the practice squad as we move into the season.

Emmanuel “Too Tall” Dieke  #98

6’6 270 DE Georgia Tech

Dieke was an Undrafted Free Agent for the Giants coming out of Georgia Tech last year so he will be entering his second NFL training camp this year. Several years ago there was another DE the Giants picked up as an undrafted free agent, you may recall, and released him. Will Emmanuel Dieke have to go the way of the CFL the way Cameron Wake did? With Wake and Vernon entrenched as starters Dieke faces a similar situation in Miami as he did in camp last year with the New York Giants. The Giants had Mathias Kiwanuka, Damontre Moore, Jason Pierre-Paul, Robert Ayers in place making it very difficult for a UDFA to crack the squad.

SB Nation had this brief breakdown of Dieke last June:  Pegged as a player with great size, quickness, change of direction and work ethic, Dieke was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Georgia Tech. Last year, Dieke recorded 28 tackles, two sacks, two tackles for a loss and one forced fumble in 13 games. In his four-year career, the 6-foot-6, 270-pound defensive end recorded five sacks.

Ray Drew  #47

6’5 276  DE Georgia

Here is the guy to keep your eye on, Drew played at a very high level in the SEC but for a variety of reasons never was able to set himself apart and distinguish himself as a top level draftee. When Drew joined Georgia he was projected as an outside linebacker but grew too much to stay at the position. Drew then began playing Defensive End where he showed flashes of what he could become. He actually looks like a similar player to Fede.

To explain the rest I’ll insert from CBS Sports:

“Drew was considered one of the crown jewels in Georgia’s highly touted “Dream Team” recruiting class in 2011, but prior to the 2013 season had been considered a bit of a bust.

Expected to play outside linebacker, Drew kept growing and finally earned time at defensive end in ’13, starting seven of 13 games and posting 43 tackles, eight tackles for loss and six sacks. Left on the defensive line as a senior, Drew quietly emerged as one of the SEC’s better and more versatile defenders in 2014 — though his statistics (39 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack) hardly prove it.

Drew’s relatively pedestrian statistics can be explained by the block-eating role he was to play at Georgia. Keeping blockers off of Georgia’s playmaking linebackers forced Drew to get stronger but robbed him of the production that could earn him a higher draft selection. Savvy scouts will notice Drew’s size, upside and passionate play, as well as the three blocked kicks he recorded in 2014.

If drafted into a 4-3 alignment that allows him to attack, Drew could prove a better (or at least more productive) player in the NFL than he ever was at Georgia.”

A couple of things stand out from there for me: the first is “savvy scouts”, even though we’ve only seen one year of on field production from Hickey’s picks I think savvy is easily a word we could use to describe him thus far. Second thing is “drafted into a 4-3 alignment” well undrafted in this case but certainly this puts Drew in a position to showcase his talents and gives him the best chance to succeed.

Kendall Montgomery  #67

6’5  262 DE Bowling Green

Although Kendall is wearing what is normally an offensive lineman’s number (67), make no mistake, this kid is here to work and make an impression at the DE position.

From newerascouting.com:

Scott Porter: What do you like most about football?

Kendall Montgomery: I like the physicality and putting my hands on people and letting my aggression out on the field.

Scott Porter: What type of person is an NFL team getting in you?

Kendall Montgomery: They are getting an ambitious person. I want to be the best at what I do. They are getting a person who will work hard to be the best player he can be and display great character.

Scott Porter: What separates you from other players?

Kendall Montgomery: My athletic ability combined with my versatility. I could play DE, LB or TE. I can cover, rush and tackle.

Good answers!

There is also this for this fringe player as he tries to forge a career in the NFL.

From draftinsider.net:

Bio: Infrequent starter the past three seasons. Posted a career-best 21 tackles, 4 tackles for loss and 3 sacks as a junior.

Positive: Imposing line prospect who’s shown marginal development. Displays good movement skills, easily changes direction and gets a lot of pressure up the field.

Negative: Lacks great first step quickness. Ineffective using his hands to protect himself and slow disengaging from blocks.

Analysis: On paper Montgomery possesses the size and speed desired for a starting defensive end but his results fall far short. He’s a developmental prospect who must quickly pick up the pace of his game for any chance of a career at the next level.

The thing to note about all three of these players is the similar size. All of them are much bigger than what we had seen being brought in from Ireland. When you add Fede to the mix you have four players who are big at the DE spot all possess a good amount of quickness and possibly some of the same position flexibility we saw from Fede when he was playing.

I wish the best of luck to these fringe players as they attempt to become Miami Dolphins.

Any blog or comments section you go on about the NFL no matter what the original topic, you will find arrogant Pats fans like this.
The only way to stop it is for us to win the division 3 out of the next five yrs and the Bills and Jets take the other 2 while we still get a Wild Card.

So I guess I have made an enemy of Herd. I have ruined her whole blogging experience and I should be banned. My Apology is bull shit and I am a porn peddler….what ever.

I apologized immediately when I saw the picture full size. I had posted from my phone, from a google image search of “Pretty Dolphin fans” and when I opened my laptop 5 minutes later realized that it was body paint and not just tight clothes as it appeared on my little phone screen. I would have deleted my own post when I realized but that is not an option so I said something along the lines that if it were moderated I wouldn’t complain. (Paraphrasing myself as I don’t remember exactly.) I have said I will not post ANY more pictures on here. I will not beg for forgiveness.

You can accept my apology or you can refuse to. I don’t really care at this point. Fucking ban me if you like. It was a mistake and it was wrong. I have taken responsibility and apologized. it was sincere. Now I don’t care.

I am in the same boat you are because I joked about the pic. I just wanted to say I am sorry about that. It was not my intention to upset Herd or anyone. I feel bad that I have. But I think everyone knows my sense of humor tends to lean towards the dark and deprave. But to me it’s humor and I think anyone that knows me knows I treat everyone I meet respectfully. To that end I will try to curtail my bad man attributes. I hope Herd accepts my apology. If not I understand and will still respect her wishes accordingly. With that said lets go Phins.

SI’s Chris Burke makes a list — here’s who he is looking for (and one guy who makes).

“There are superstars within the league with a little more panache—a rather intangible element making them ideal teammates. Usually, those “magnets” are quarterbacks. Who else fits the bill? A look at a few non-QBs who, for various reasons, make their teammates’ football lives better”
    ———————————
Ndamukong Suh, DT, Miami Dolphins: Why did Miami break the bank for Suh this off-season? Because the benefits of having a pocket-collapsing defensive tackle trickle down to the defensive ends, who have an easier time chasing the quarterback; to the linebackers that are asked to clean up in the gaps; and to the secondary, which does not have to cover for as long if a quarterback is forced from his spot.

Does Suh’s personality detract from his on-field play? It can in the realm of public perception. His teammates might even tire of the penalties and his standoffish approach to the media. But if they do, Suh wins them back over on Sundays.

“For the four years that I’ve been with him, I’ve never seen him complain, I’ve never seen him fuss or just get down,” ex-teammate Nick Fairley told the Detroit Free Press. “During the games like he’d just come to the sidelines picking guys up. He’s a great leader.”

  47. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For 5 yrs Wake has been going around the outside, only to have to loop back inside to get the sack, but what happens when the pocket is pushed back by Suh, and Wake only has to take 7 steps to the QB instead of 9?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Those throws over the middle, that are tough for every team to cover, seem to get easier when the QB can’t step up into his throw.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t look to replace Mitchell so quickly. That guy never stops and makes plays in the backfield. he could have his best season along side Suh.

You have Wake on the edge off the RT, Suh between the RG and C, Mitchell over the LG and Vernon on the edge of the LT. All 5 have to block those 4 however they roll their protections. Not a lot of extra blockers to pick up anything else unless you keep your backs and/or TEs in. That limits your offense.

  49. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, that was exactly my thought on Suh benefiting Wake, especially being on the same side. Wake should have a quicker route to the QB. He could have his best sack season this year because of Suh. Mitchell and Vernon are both good players and they’ll have more chances too.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s really not about Wake getting the sack, it’s the team, he may be fighting his teammates for sacks.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I get that but I really do think he might clean up more this year. He’s also a guy that deserves to play in the playoffs and compete for a championship. I think Wake is going to have a big year.

Nope, I’m not discounting Mitchell….I like his game. We got him for 2 more years thru the 2016 season @ $2.9 & $3.9M. He won’t even be 30 until 2017 when he’s a FA.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Solid contract with $9M guaranteed on a 4 year $16M deal.

I like our front 7 and if they stay relatively healthy I think we’re in good shape. Players always get banged up. But if nothing serious or long lasting, we’re gonna be one the best defensive front 7’s in the league.

The thing about Misi in the middle is he’s very physical and has the size to handle OL at 6-3 250. His physicality hurts him sometimes because he plays so violent that he injures himself. He also drops in coverage better than he’s given credit for when he’s not playing on a high ankle sprain.

I’m buying what Coyle is selling. He says he’s more optimistic going into this season than he’s ever been. He sites chemistry, work ethic, competition at multiple spots, and the drive to not want to repeat what happened the last 6 games of last season, as reasons why.

I keep hearing our depth is thin all over the roster. We may be thin at lots of different spots, but to me it just means several guys aren’t proven yet, so really more unknown than thin.

The most important guys on O are Alberts and Cameron, depth falls off steeply if they get hurt. I wouldn’t count out Douglas as a capable replacement for Alberts.

On D Suh and Grimes. Phillips is the wildcard, if Suh is out, and Brice McCain, if Grimes goes down.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I see either upgrades or the same guys in almost every position on D. I don’t see how it couldnt be better. The DL is definitely better. The DB is mostly the same with options for improvement including Jones being back for the entire season. Last year started off bad with Jordan and Jones being unavailable and the backups having little experience. Now we have Jones back and people with more experience. Our LB unit couldn’t be worse. Wheeler was awful all year. Misi should be healthier and should also have more room to make impact plays. I just don’t see where we aren’t better there.

  59. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Son : very good write. Nice to finally not be looking for marginal players to be cut in order to fill starter positions We may still grab a few if they are considered depth upgrades, but we are no longer needing this route for starters . Other teams will be scooping up our cuts for a change . kudos to the FO for a good off season overhaul.

I hate to sound like a Philbin basher, but whose brilliant idea was it to have the players play an extra sporting contest?
They are very competitive people by nature, so they could be expected to go all out, especially the kicker, trying to show off in what should have been HIS sport.
Plus you are asking them to play a sport they are not trained at or conditioned for. They would be using muscle groups in ways they have not been accustomed to.
This just seems like an all around bad idea. Just show them a frickin inspirational football movie or a light comedy or James Bond flick.

  68. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

So I assume if Parker will be ready by week one that he will be healthy for the last few weeks of the preseason?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not sure. Right now it looks like he’ll be ready to start the season, we don’t know any more than that. What really amazes me is how athletes have surgery when they break bones. I’ve broken quite a few toes, fingers and my left leg, and never had surgery. Why do they have to have screws put in for? If the screw didn’t come loose, he wouldn’t need an additional surgery? Do laypeople have screws put in? I don’t get it

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Laypeople have screws put in for support. I would think it would speed up the time it takes to be ready to play, if you don’t need the fast recovery, like yourself, then they don’t use the screws. I have heard of screws being put in the foot for other reasons too. My brother in laws buddy died in a car crash, when he heard the news he kicked a railroad tie so hard he broke a bone on the top of his foot. The dr said it was the worst break on that bone he’d ever seen. A screw was put in his foot, not sure if it was the severity or just so he could walk sooner.

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If we need Parker to be in top form for the Skins and Jags games we’re in trouble. I would think he needs to be ready to break out week 3 against Buff, the same with Alberts/Delmas, if they’re close to 100% by week 3 we should be fine.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I’m going to the Washington game week one, so I’m just hoping I can be there to see his first TD!

Screws aren’t generally for repair of the bone they are usually there to keep some think like a plate or even some sort of external immobilizer to prevent very small bones from shifting from a healing position. My guess is because the bones in the foot are small an shift a lot he had a plate in his foot and possibly one if the screws that held the plate in place got loose and was causing discomfort.

He’s going to have to accept a big paycut but this guy and his wife are not hurting for money for several generations. It would really be nice of him to accept he is at the end of his career and he signs for low salary so Riley can make run at Kevin Durant. What a big lineup with durant, whiteside and Bosh. I don’t think their has ever been a 3 headed 7fter big lineup in the nba history and all can run and 2 of 3 has a outside game. Wades knees and body are shot and are only gonna get worse.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The Lakers had Sam Bowie, Vlade Divacs, and some other 7 footer in the 90s, I saw them play in Sacramento. None of them were really great, but they were tough underneath.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I remember Bowie and Vlade. Vlade had a nice 15 ft outside shot. I don’t remember if they could run the courts. Bosh and Durant are good outside shooters and they think whiteside can develop a consistent 12 footer. With Zoran they have their PG who can run with anyone and then they can do away with Wade. Chambers off the bench with Napier running along Zoran makes a fast big running lineup.

    ——————–
Good news is that the cheap seats are going to be even cheaper this year (least for the Texans game). If you want field level prime……you might ending up co-signing letters to Ross from OD. 🙂

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, R. Jones, Delmas, Thomas, Thompson, Kovacs, D. Jones, Gary and Aikens (CB) are all competing at Safety. Thomas is also working in Wilson’s role as a Dimeback – the 6th DB. I’m sure Aikens is as well. So we have quite a bit of competition there.

Grimes, Taylor, Bowman, Davis, Br. McCain, Bo. McCain, Lippett, Seamster and Aikens (S) competing at corner. It should be fun seeing which 9-10 DBs make the team. Probably 5 CB and 4 S with Aikens being able to play both will make up the 9. Do we keep 10?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Guess my thing is that I think Jones and Delmas are the cream of the safeties. Then there is Grimes and a bunch of other very promising CB talent, and Aikens is on that level too (maybe Lippett too….but not lets get ahead of ourselves).

Maybe Aiken becomes the nickel, but if he gets switched straight up to CB seems some better at the position loses out to a lesser back-up at safety. But hey…….something we might not even consider after we see how it plays up in camp.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      My locks:
      CB Grimes, Taylor, Bowman (STs)
S R. Jones, Delmas, Thomas (STs)
      DB Aikens (STs)

That leaves 3 spots, I doubt we keep 11 DBs, can’t get that many on the field. Usually play 4, 5, 6 and 7 max at once in a game. So we likely only dress 7 or 8 on game day. You don’t need 4 inactives so I’d say 10 would be the number for depth with only 2-3 inactive on game day.

I guess Bryce McCain would be a favorite to make the team being a proven vet and nickel/slot corner. But Bobby McCain is the same type of player and though both on the short side at 5-9, they both have ambitions to start as well. If Bobby McCain performs well, do we go with the cheaper option and let the vet and his 2 year $5.5M deal go, or do we keep two corners like that with all the spread formations in today’s NFL?

Then there is Lippett at 6-3 being that tall rangy corner. Will Davis has route jumping ability but coming off of knee surgery can he do enough to keep his job? Does our 5th round Safety Cedric Thompson with very good athletic ability make it as a prospect with the arrow pointing up?

I’d say D. Jones, Gary, Kovacs and Seamster are on the outside looking in and will have to really shine to make the team.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It’s a great analysis, except I’m not sure why you put Thomas into the locked in category. DB is going to be a cage fight in camp. Not sure we have enough studs up top or who is going to win the other spots, but pretty sure you’ll be seeing other teams sign guys who don’t win the battle for our spots.

  79. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I know we got some golfers out there…..what’s your handicap?

    Tiger went 13-over today.

You might be thinking hurricane or something, but then that leaves him 12-over for the tournament and second worse guy is at +4.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We could also see a situation where Grimes and Taylor start, and when we go to nickel Taylor moves inside at the slot and say Bowman or Lippett plays boundary as taller corners on bigger WRs. We did that back in the day with Madison, Surtain and T-Buck. Madison and Surtain started and when T-Buck came in he played boundary and Surtain moved inside because he was good at it.

There are a lot of ways our secondary could play out. I’m looking forward to seeing who the best group is.

  81. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, Thomas has flashed in games, is versatile and plays STs. I think he makes the team taking over Wilson’s role as a backup and dime safety if he doesn’t win a starting job, and he’s a core STs guy.

We might have some nice flexibility this year with guys who are smaller quick twitch players and some taller rangy guys on the outside against big WRs which our division rivals possess. The Pats make us need those quick twitch guys and the Jets and Bills have some big WRs.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tim — you very well might be exactly right and you probably have a better read than me. I’m just waiting for the dog fight in camp, cause other than Grimes, Jones and Delmas (if healthy)……I don’t know what to predict. Just too many dogs in the ring. But yeah…..think Taylor, Davis and Aikens will be active if healthy.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m just thinking it out but like I said I’m excited to see it play out. I’m hoping we found a few gems with some of the new guys the last few years, and the new rookie class with 3 of them all in the 5th round which I find extremely interesting. I think that is where the cluster was for us in similar graded DBs in this draft.

Don’t count on D&B’s though. Pig was thinking maybe we should find some place we can walk around after instead, like on Lauderdale or Hollywood beach……and it is a real good point. And, even if there will be something night before, we only plan a little ahead.

So my best advice is find the place that best suits you btwn North Miami and Lauderdale. You are going to spend a lot more time there than at the bar anyhow. Not like we don’t have cabs and uber. Plus that’s convenient to the stadium territory.

Not sure what your price point is, but here is a place that Mike E and fam stayed as well as one of my other friends too. Both gave good reports on it.

JS — rent the house would be up to those who already don’t have a bed down here……but good thought.

And don’t worry about the walking. Wherever it is there will be one place where we hang like at D&B’s last year. Only walking involved would be after……even if that might make some late to the tailgate on Sun.
