FOLLOWING PERFECTION: The 1973 Miami Dolphins

73 Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins 21-13 win over San Francisco the first week of the ’73 season raised several questions. Foremost among them was “What happened to the offense?”  After three quarters the Dolphins had scored just six points.  Only AFTER the oppressive heat forced several 49er starters to the sidelines did Miami finally score 15 fourth quarter points to win the game.

Head coach Don Shula knew there was no chance a heat wave would come to his team’s rescue when Miami flew to California to play an outstanding Oakland Raiders team.  Shula had to find a way to ramp up his offense as they prepared to meet one of the NFL’s best defenses.

The Oakland Raiders were the eighth and final charter member of the fledgling American Football League.  In late 1959 managing partner F. Wayne Valley hired ex-Navy coach Eddie Erdelatz to be the Raiders first head coach.  Oakland finished 6-8  in their debut season.  Ownership conflicts prevented Oakland from signing ANY of their top college draft picks in 1961.  (Most of those picks signed with the rival NFL during this era of fierce competition between the two leagues.)  When Oakland lost their first two games in the ’61 season by a combined score of 99-0, Valley fired Erdelatz and elevated O-Line coach Marty Feldman to head coach.  Feldman led Oakland to a miserable 2-12 record.  His successor, Red Conkright, presided over an awful 1-13 team in 1962.  Oakland management was desperate.  In 1963, little known Al Davis, age 33, was hired to be both the GM and head coach of the Raiders.  Davis immediately installed his “vertical game” passing attack, an aggressive passing strategy developed earlier by Chargers’ head coach (and future Hall-of-Famer) Sid Gillman.  Under Davis, Oakland improved immediately to a 10-4 record after going 3-25 the previous two years.  Davis was voted the AFL’s Coach of the Year in 1963.  The Raiders slipped to 5-7-2 in 1964 but rebounded to 8-5-1 in 1965.  Davis’ promising coaching career came to an abrupt end when he was named Commissioner of the AFL in early 1966.

Davis was instrumental in bringing about the AFL-NFL merger.  When the deal was finalized, Davis returned to the Raiders as a part owner (he bought 10 per cent of the team for $18,000) and head of football operations.

In 1967, Davis’ hand-picked coaching successor, John Rauch, led Oakland to a 13-1 record.  They destroyed the Houston Oilers 40-7 in the AFL Championship Game to advance to Super Bowl II in the historic Orange Bowl.  On January 14, 1968, Rauch’s Raiders fell to Vince Lombardi’s Packers 33-14 in what was Lombardi’s last game with Green Bay.

The Oakland Raider teams of the 1970’s were thoroughly dominant (and nasty) for much of the decade.  They produced 8 Hall of Fame inductees plus a Hall of Fame coach in John Madden.  Oakland made the NFL playoffs in 1970 (where they defeated Shula’s Dolphins 21-14).  From 1972 through 1977 the Raiders made the playoffs for SIX CONSECUTIVE SEASONS.  The highlight was the 13-1 1976 team.  After defeating New England in the AFC semi-final game, they defeated their arch-nemesis, the Pittsburgh Steelers, to advance to Super Bowl XI.  The Raiders led the Minnesota Vikings 16-0 at halftime and coasted to a 32-14 victory, claiming their first Super Bowl title.

Oakland’s reputation for dirty play went to a new level in the 1978 preseason when Patriots’ wide receiver Daryl Stingley was paralyzed for life by a hit from Raiders FS Jack Tatum.  However, a critical loss by Oakland to the Miami Dolphins late in the season kept the Raiders out of the playoffs.

In 1980, the Raiders, under 2nd year coach Tom Flores, advanced to Super Bowl XV where they easily defeated the Eagles (quarterbacked by Ron Jawaorski) 27-10.  Two years later, Al Davis moved the team to the L.A. Coliseum after the courts ruled the NFL was wrong to deny his move.  In 1983, the Los Angeles Raiders destroyed the Washington Redskins 38-9 to claim their THIRD Super Bowl Championship.

In 1989 Al Davis opened negotiations with the city of Oakland to return the Raiders to al davisthat city. In mid-1995, a deal was reached.  This time the NFL did not stand in Davis’ way.  Since 1996, this franchise has again been known as the Oakland Raiders.

All Davis passed away during the 2011 season, ending one of the most colorful, litigious and controversial careers in NFL history.  His signature phrase, “Just Win, Baby,” has become a registered trademark of his bad-boy Oakland franchise.

On Sept. 23, 1973, the Dolphins met the Raiders NOT at Oakland-Alameda Coliseum (as wrongly reported in some inaccurate renditions) but in the University of California’s Memorial Stadium in Berkeley.  Upgrades and repairs at the Raiders’ home stadium forced shulathis change of venue.  It was bright, sunny, and 62 degrees at kickoff.  A sellout crowd of boisterous Raider fans was waiting for Miami.  And Don Shula was worried.  His offense struggled on opening day against San Francisco.  And All-Pro wideout Paul Warfield was unavailable due to an injury.  New offensive coordinator Bill McPeak (who replaced Howard Schnellenberger when Howard became the new head coach of the Colts) knew he’d have to pull a few rabbits out of the hat to confuse and fool the highly rated Raiders’ defense.

Oakland decided to pound the football time after time after time.  They ate up the clock with long drives on several occasions.  Their first drive ate up over half of the first quarter.  It ended at Miami’s 5 yard line when 46 year old placekicker and back-up QB George Blanda booted a 12 yard field goal.  (At this point in NFL history, the goal posts were still on the goal line, NOT the end line as today).  Oakland stuffed Miami’s subsequent drive and the opening quarter ended with Oakland leading 3-0.

raiders Raider running backs Marv Hubbard and Charlie Smith took turns running the football behind future Hall of Fame linemen Jim Otto and Art Shell.  After another long drive, a penalty forced Oakland to attempt a long field goal.  Blanda’s 46 yard field goal made the score 6-0 at half time.  Miami’s offense was dead in the water.

Shula and McPeak made some half time adjustments.  More flare passes were called for the Dolphin running backs, especially Mercury Morris and his back-up, Charlie Leigh.  McPeak hoped this might free up wide receiver Marlin Briscoe and tight end Jim Mandich for some intermediate passes from Griese.

But Oakland’s ground game kept Miami’s offense off the field for most of the second half.blanda  Another time-consuming drive engineered by QB Darryl LaMonica ended at the Miami 12 yard line.  Blanda’s 19 yard chip shot expanded Oakland’s lead to 9-0 after three quarters.

Miami was having little luck with their running game.  Morris would run for just 48 yards; Csonka for just 47.  So Griese switched to the passing game.  But the Dolphins were forced to punt again.  One final time Oakland marched down the field, using the pass sparingly.  The drive ended at Miami’s 3 yard line.  Blanda’s fourth field goal gave Oakland a seemingly insurmountable 12-0 advantage.

With only 1:05 left, Griese completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jim Mandich.  But it was too little, too late.  Oakland ran out the clock

and Miami’s 18-game winning streak was over.  The Raiders had won 12-7.  Raider nation was ecstatic!  On the day, Griese was 12 for 25 for just 90 yards.  And the ground game produced only 105 yards.  “Their offensive line was exceptional and their defensive line took away our running game,” said a disappointed Don Shula.  Left unsaid was the absence of Paul Warfield.  No crack-back blocks to spring the running backs.  And no double-teaming of Warfield by the defensive backs to free-up other Miami receivers.  It is a fact that during this two-year run, Miami was UNDEFEATED in games played by Paul Warfield.

For the first time since Super Bowl VI (19 months ago) the Miami Dolphins had tasted defeat.  But better days were on the horizon.  The New England Patriots, a team Miami had dominated in 1972, were coming to town.

The 1973 Miami Dolphins were now 1-1.

The same place it’s always been, in my head. Much of the hard work was done back in ’72 and ’73 when I read, and re-read, every newspaper account of these games I could lay my hands on. When I was in the Army during most of ’72, my mom would ship me clippings of Dolphin games from the south Florida newspapers. I also read accounts of their games in the northern California papers while stationed at Ft. Ord. ANY info I could get in this manner was committed to memory and, in some cases, written down on note pads. Some exact info (such as rushing and passing stats), was gathered from Wikipedia and worked into the story of each game. –Much to my wife’s chagrin, I STILL HAVE big boxes and boxes of Dolphin info in the garage, mostly from the ’80’s and ’90’s.–But I promised her I’d throw out all the stuff from the ’70’s when I completed these articles as we only rent a very small house in the Tampa suburbs. –AT NO TIME did I plan to publish a book or do anything formal. My goal was to write the story of the ’72 and ’73 championship seasons and put it down on note paper and perhaps offer it FOR FREE to the Dolphins to use as they saw fit. –ONE TIME I sent a note to the Dolphins in 1974 offering to do JUST THAT! I even included an example of my work. But i NEVER HEARD BACK from Mr. Robbie, so that was the end of that.

When I offered to write the story of “ABSOLUTE PERFECTION” for the site once managed by Miss Gigi, she urged me to do it. The rest, as they say, is history. I’ve never seen this as a money making operation, so I dispensed with formalities such as footnotes and bibliographies. My only desire was to share my experiences with those who I thought might appreciate these special moments in Dolphin history.

Congrats to the Warriors fans! I was watching highlights and it was so ho-hum when the Warriors won based on how the networks showed it. I was like, did they win the championship? Anyway, glad the almighty one went down in defeat once again.

    Tim

Did you see the Mets game last night? I love the way this team is finding ways to win. It’s really fun to watch. I know anything can happen, and good fortune can turn into bad luck, but it seems like this team is growing nicely together. They’re getting important contributions from a bunch of different players. Last night Parnell pitches 2 innings to get the save and preserve the Harvey win. Young guys are stepping up like Herrera and Ceciliani. d’Arnaud is back and really picking up where he left off, hitting well. Cuddyer, the wily vet with some big hits. It’s coming from all different places.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No I forgot to put it on. LOL

I watched highlights and it was good to see Harvey had his electric stuff back. In the last few games his fast ball didn’t have that extra movement and pop. His control of his other pitches was excellent. Yes the team is showing a resilience that’s not always been there. It was good to see Parnell back, they could use him. Every time Carlos Torres comes in I say here goes the lead.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If you think of what this team has overcome, all the injuries, it’s impressive that they’re still on top and very much alive in the NL East division race, and the WC.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, they need d’Arnaud to become kind of what David Wright was for this team. It would have been great to have both, but that doesn’t seem like it will happen.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t know if d’Arnaud will ever be what Wright was in his heyday, but I think he could be what David Wright has been the last few years and better for sure.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just imagine if Granderson was hitting like he was with the Yankees, and Cuddyer was hitting like he had the 5 previous years, we’d have a 10 game lead in the East

    I have jury duty today

    😦

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, yeah I’m not saying d’Arnaud will hit over .300 30 HR 100+ RBI like Wright was doing early in his career, but .280+ 20 HR 80 RBI would be nice production from a catcher and right handed bat. I’m not saying he’ll do that this year, he missed too many games but those kind of numbers in the future.

  10. D's avatar D says:

I know a lot here dont like Philbin but i have seen a real progression in him as a coach since he took over. Listening to him he just seems to feel more comfortable than he has previous years while still remaing true to his beliefs on what makes a strong team. I think his style is a throwback to some of the older greats, just have to see if it works in the NFL now. Regardless, i still like him and his style, and i would love to see him bring back some of the old school NFL.

I get ya Tim, it’s kinda like the world missed out on watching the best team in the world win a championship because the media kept saying “Hey! Look at Lebron James! He’s the best player in the world!”

(even though Steph Curry won the season MVP and not James. 😉 )

Anyway, cheers to all, and I no longer think I’m the one jinxing the Fins. My teams DO win championships…!!!!

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jahn, I’ve mentioned it a few times. I agree with what you have said that the Dolphins are kinda overdo to make the playoffs and it feels like it will happen this year even though it’s the offseason. I’m going to go with that feeling as long as it feels like that lol. I really feel if this team fails to make the playoffs again, there will be a lot of disappointment from the top to the bottom of the organization. I think they really feel they’re ready.

    • D's avatar D says:

I feel it too and i think i would be more disappointed than in years past. Each year i have felt the team just felt off, sometimes it was coaches didnt seem really confidant with their system and i think sometimes it made them overthink their calls, players just seemed like a collection of people, not a team. Leadership on a player level was wierd, it was there but it almost ssemed pulled in different directions. All in all i think this team looks more and feels more like a team able to take the next step, and furthermore it feels like a team that will sustain its success. Parts are moving together and in the same direction now so my expectations are pretty high as well.

  16. D's avatar D says:

Oh yeah Jahn, big congrats to you and your BBall team. Im not a huge fan of the sport, though i do generally get behind my Florida teams (more of a Magic fan than Heat, but still really pull for Heat as well), but i was pretty excited for the Warriors to win this chapionship. I think its a good display of a great team producing as a team and winning as a team, and i think thats really good for the sport. Go Warriors!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree it’s fun watching team basketball. When it’s about one or two stars it makes it a sham for me because the league helps foster that.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Won’t piggy easily get out of jury duty being a lawyer? I would think a lawyer wouldn’t want a lawyer as a juror.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dunno, understanding the law would be benficial for both sides. Those you keep in the jusry a lot of time are those overlap people, so defense and prosecution both how if they make their case the will likely get his vote. I could only see him being refused IF one side or the other KNOWS they have shit for a case.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That’s the way it worked in Virginia……I was happily immune. Gotta figure Pig wouldn’t be in the bull pen if that was the case in NY. But you are right that he probably never gets on a jury though. Whichever lawyer has the weaker legal case will yank him right out of there.

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Which UDFA guards do you think have the best chance of surprising and making the team?
Michael Liedtke 6-3 305 Illinois State
    Dionte Savage 6-4 343 Oklahoma
    Aundrey Walker 6-6 315 USC

I also forgot we signed OL Donald Hawkins 6-4 310. He was a tackle at Texas but could move to guard in the NFL. He was a UDFA last year signed by PHI, then was on CLE and DAL before we signed him in May.

    • D's avatar D says:

Liedtke would get my vote, but i kinda am pulling for Savage to make it. I would like to see a guy with some size at the position. I know the ZBS scheme doesn’t really need a big road grater kinda guy, but even in ZBS a lot of the ability to be successful is leverage which does rely on technique, but also a good bit on size too. If for anything but having a guy to get push in short yardage packages, i think it would be beneficial to have a guy like that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You can be big in a ZBS but you better be able to move. John Jerry struggled in that dept.

  21. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    That’s a lotta beef!

  22. Big congrats to Jahn & Rhino — that was a fun championship series watching some great players. The best “team” won while the best “player” on the planet lost – you can’t win 1 on 5. Jahn – enjoy my friend it’s been many years in waiting for you!!! I can only hope the Fins break the same super long streak!!

    D,
I don’t like philbin. Not because he’s not a good person or anything like that. Every year in the off season we say the same thing. Oh this team seems different. The coach is really maturing and getting better etc etc…

Sorry he is who he is. In 3 years the best he could do was 8-8. When the games really counted his teams folded. How many times are we gonna lose the fucking jets and baltimore at home to miss the playoffs. I won’t give any props to philbin until I see it on the field. Get to the playoffs and I’ll change my tune.
Until then, with philbin, this is the same shit different year

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So does “he is who he is” also work for Belichick’s 5 years in CLE? Would you have said that about Bill Walsh’s first two seasons in SF at 2-14 and 6-10?

      • Belichick was the TOP defensive coordinator in the league; Philbin was not calling plays in Green Bay and nowhere near in the same league as Belichick as an asst. coach – IMO.

      • Also, I said it when he was first hired which I thought was a mistake – he had just lost his 20 year old son in a drowning – you never recover from that, losing a child. There has I believe been an emotional disconnect with him in his players to date.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I’m sure you can find exceptions in history for anything. Comparing belicheat to philbin is comical to tell you the truth.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gigi, poor rebuttal on Belichick. He was bad in CLE as a HC. Lost control of his team.

Philbin was a major factor in putting together game plans in GB which is more tedious and involved than calling plays. Calling plays is based on all the work that was done during the week putting the game plan together, but for some reason people overlook that and only focus on calling plays.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

so far in miami he hasn’t done jack squat. I bet there are a lot of coaches in the NFL that could have gone 8-8 with the team we had last year.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s funny how poor starts by other coaches always have excuses or reasons for failures but with Philbin he simply is what he is. LOL

FYI, Shula was dogged by not being able to win the big game until he finally did. Not all careers have the same road.

I’ll move on from this topic because Philbin haters don’t budge on anything. 😉

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Ok philbin is as good as shula and belicheat. happy dear?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah that’s what I said. That’s why I’ll stop with this topic because people exaggerate what others say to keep pounding their point.

  27. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    tim,
do you think belicheat or shula coached teams would have folded 2 years ago, if all they had to do is beat the jets at home to get in the playoffs?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There’s no way to know that. Remember Philbin also had to deal with one of the worst GM’s ever, or is that not the case anymore? LOL

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

oh so that was the problem. he had the worst GM ever. He’s the best coach to walk this earth, only if he had a better gm he’d be 3-0 in superbowls by now.

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Belichick in CLE, you know the start of his coaching career that doesn’t count. LOL
    6-10
    7-9
    7-9
    11-5
    5-11

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

yea and he never won anything in cleveland. So maybe philbin will win 4 superbowls when he leaves Miami. Do I care? no. Just like the browns fans don’t give a shit about what beliceat did in NE.

  29. D's avatar D says:

Im just commenting that i personally see a difference in him, in his interviews an such. Im not saying i predict we win it all but more that i feel like this year is a point at which i think Philbin has his team, he has the people around him he needed from day 1, and that i think his chosen style of voaching is admirable and will be long term successful. I do agree he has to do something though to prove it, as i said in my previous post, its yet to be seen if his style works in the modern NFL but i really hope it does because those were much better times.

Boulder, you’re not even getting the sarcasm because of your Philbin stance. LOL

I have read for years on the blogs how Ireland sucks, worst GM ever but somehow Philbin should have won despite that. Maybe that wasn’t you, not sure of your stance on Ireland, but those who did use him as a scapegoat for years can’t go back and have it both ways.

I personally don’t think Ireland was as bad as some made him out to be but he wasn’t good, and his record proved that over 6 seasons at 46-50 with only one winning season his (Parcells) first year at 11-5.

Philbin has to start winning and 4 seasons is enough time to get your program going which I’ve said many times. But some of you make it seem like we’ve been going 4-12 with him every year.

Okay I’m done with this topic for real, there’s nothing left for me to say about it. Go Philbin’s Phins!!! 🙂

Philbin is a good coach. He’s been a good coach for 30 years. He just may not be a good fit as a head coach….because HCs don’t actually do much coaching. Position coaches are the guys actually developing players.
    ***
Nobody wants to admit it because it’s easier to just blame the coach, but the talent on this team simply hasn’t been good enough…for what seems like a couple decades…from the QB to the punter. This roster has been full of mediocre players for a long time. But, every preseason everyone convinces themselves that the talent is better than it really is. Then, when we end the season 8-8, people start looking for scapegoats.

Boulder, good players make plays. Coaching can only get so much out of someone. You’re either talented or not. You think Phil Jackson was the reason he won all those championships or do you think having the best players of those times had something to do with it?

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

of course talent matters. But coaching matters also. Good coaches can design plays that fits their talent. That’s my main issue with philbin. He wants his players to adjust their talent to his scheme instead of building a scheme that fits his players talents. Just look at the way he used reggie bush when he got here.

BTW comparing basketball to football is ludicrous. As we saw this year one player can take you for lottery pick to the finals in the NBA.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What is Philbin’s scheme? He allows his coordinators to run their schemes. We don’t run the Packers offense.

That sort of exaggeration…or is that ok because it’s positive and everyone forgets it if it turns out to be wrong? Lol

People just like to rewrite history to fit their narrative. Pretty much everyone on this site or the old one were hyping our WRs before the season last year. That narrative changed after the season.

You always claim you get bashed for saying this and that and it’s not true. Nobody bashes you, just disagree at times.

I thought our WRs would be better last year then they were. Then I found out the WR room was a mess and the results made sense. I for one never called them the best group in the NFL because I never thought that, some people thought maybe the deepest because not many teams are 4/5 WRs deep.
