GAME 2: MIAMI @ OAKLAND, Sept. 23, 1973
The Miami Dolphins 21-13 win over San Francisco the first week of the ’73 season raised several questions. Foremost among them was “What happened to the offense?” After three quarters the Dolphins had scored just six points. Only AFTER the oppressive heat forced several 49er starters to the sidelines did Miami finally score 15 fourth quarter points to win the game.
Head coach Don Shula knew there was no chance a heat wave would come to his team’s rescue when Miami flew to California to play an outstanding Oakland Raiders team. Shula had to find a way to ramp up his offense as they prepared to meet one of the NFL’s best defenses.
The Oakland Raiders were the eighth and final charter member of the fledgling American Football League. In late 1959 managing partner F. Wayne Valley hired ex-Navy coach Eddie Erdelatz to be the Raiders first head coach. Oakland finished 6-8 in their debut season. Ownership conflicts prevented Oakland from signing ANY of their top college draft picks in 1961. (Most of those picks signed with the rival NFL during this era of fierce competition between the two leagues.) When Oakland lost their first two games in the ’61 season by a combined score of 99-0, Valley fired Erdelatz and elevated O-Line coach Marty Feldman to head coach. Feldman led Oakland to a miserable 2-12 record. His successor, Red Conkright, presided over an awful 1-13 team in 1962. Oakland management was desperate. In 1963, little known Al Davis, age 33, was hired to be both the GM and head coach of the Raiders. Davis immediately installed his “vertical game” passing attack, an aggressive passing strategy developed earlier by Chargers’ head coach (and future Hall-of-Famer) Sid Gillman. Under Davis, Oakland improved immediately to a 10-4 record after going 3-25 the previous two years. Davis was voted the AFL’s Coach of the Year in 1963. The Raiders slipped to 5-7-2 in 1964 but rebounded to 8-5-1 in 1965. Davis’ promising coaching career came to an abrupt end when he was named Commissioner of the AFL in early 1966.
Davis was instrumental in bringing about the AFL-NFL merger. When the deal was finalized, Davis returned to the Raiders as a part owner (he bought 10 per cent of the team for $18,000) and head of football operations.
In 1967, Davis’ hand-picked coaching successor, John Rauch, led Oakland to a 13-1 record. They destroyed the Houston Oilers 40-7 in the AFL Championship Game to advance to Super Bowl II in the historic Orange Bowl. On January 14, 1968, Rauch’s Raiders fell to Vince Lombardi’s Packers 33-14 in what was Lombardi’s last game with Green Bay.
The Oakland Raider teams of the 1970’s were thoroughly dominant (and nasty) for much of the decade. They produced 8 Hall of Fame inductees plus a Hall of Fame coach in John Madden. Oakland made the NFL playoffs in 1970 (where they defeated Shula’s Dolphins 21-14). From 1972 through 1977 the Raiders made the playoffs for SIX CONSECUTIVE SEASONS. The highlight was the 13-1 1976 team. After defeating New England in the AFC semi-final game, they defeated their arch-nemesis, the Pittsburgh Steelers, to advance to Super Bowl XI. The Raiders led the Minnesota Vikings 16-0 at halftime and coasted to a 32-14 victory, claiming their first Super Bowl title.
Oakland’s reputation for dirty play went to a new level in the 1978 preseason when Patriots’ wide receiver Daryl Stingley was paralyzed for life by a hit from Raiders FS Jack Tatum. However, a critical loss by Oakland to the Miami Dolphins late in the season kept the Raiders out of the playoffs.
In 1980, the Raiders, under 2nd year coach Tom Flores, advanced to Super Bowl XV where they easily defeated the Eagles (quarterbacked by Ron Jawaorski) 27-10. Two years later, Al Davis moved the team to the L.A. Coliseum after the courts ruled the NFL was wrong to deny his move. In 1983, the Los Angeles Raiders destroyed the Washington Redskins 38-9 to claim their THIRD Super Bowl Championship.
In 1989 Al Davis opened negotiations with the city of Oakland to return the Raiders to 
that city. In mid-1995, a deal was reached. This time the NFL did not stand in Davis’ way. Since 1996, this franchise has again been known as the Oakland Raiders.
All Davis passed away during the 2011 season, ending one of the most colorful, litigious and controversial careers in NFL history. His signature phrase, “Just Win, Baby,” has become a registered trademark of his bad-boy Oakland franchise.
On Sept. 23, 1973, the Dolphins met the Raiders NOT at Oakland-Alameda Coliseum (as wrongly reported in some inaccurate renditions) but in the University of California’s Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. Upgrades and repairs at the Raiders’ home stadium forced 
this change of venue. It was bright, sunny, and 62 degrees at kickoff. A sellout crowd of boisterous Raider fans was waiting for Miami. And Don Shula was worried. His offense struggled on opening day against San Francisco. And All-Pro wideout Paul Warfield was unavailable due to an injury. New offensive coordinator Bill McPeak (who replaced Howard Schnellenberger when Howard became the new head coach of the Colts) knew he’d have to pull a few rabbits out of the hat to confuse and fool the highly rated Raiders’ defense.
Oakland decided to pound the football time after time after time. They ate up the clock with long drives on several occasions. Their first drive ate up over half of the first quarter. It ended at Miami’s 5 yard line when 46 year old placekicker and back-up QB George Blanda booted a 12 yard field goal. (At this point in NFL history, the goal posts were still on the goal line, NOT the end line as today). Oakland stuffed Miami’s subsequent drive and the opening quarter ended with Oakland leading 3-0.
Raider running backs Marv Hubbard and Charlie Smith took turns running the football behind future Hall of Fame linemen Jim Otto and Art Shell. After another long drive, a penalty forced Oakland to attempt a long field goal. Blanda’s 46 yard field goal made the score 6-0 at half time. Miami’s offense was dead in the water.
Shula and McPeak made some half time adjustments. More flare passes were called for the Dolphin running backs, especially Mercury Morris and his back-up, Charlie Leigh. McPeak hoped this might free up wide receiver Marlin Briscoe and tight end Jim Mandich for some intermediate passes from Griese.
But Oakland’s ground game kept Miami’s offense off the field for most of the second half.
Another time-consuming drive engineered by QB Darryl LaMonica ended at the Miami 12 yard line. Blanda’s 19 yard chip shot expanded Oakland’s lead to 9-0 after three quarters.
Miami was having little luck with their running game. Morris would run for just 48 yards; Csonka for just 47. So Griese switched to the passing game. But the Dolphins were forced to punt again. One final time Oakland marched down the field, using the pass sparingly. The drive ended at Miami’s 3 yard line. Blanda’s fourth field goal gave Oakland a seemingly insurmountable 12-0 advantage.
With only 1:05 left, Griese completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jim Mandich. But it was too little, too late. Oakland ran out the clock

and Miami’s 18-game winning streak was over. The Raiders had won 12-7. Raider nation was ecstatic! On the day, Griese was 12 for 25 for just 90 yards. And the ground game produced only 105 yards. “Their offensive line was exceptional and their defensive line took away our running game,” said a disappointed Don Shula. Left unsaid was the absence of Paul Warfield. No crack-back blocks to spring the running backs. And no double-teaming of Warfield by the defensive backs to free-up other Miami receivers. It is a fact that during this two-year run, Miami was UNDEFEATED in games played by Paul Warfield.
For the first time since Super Bowl VI (19 months ago) the Miami Dolphins had tasted defeat. But better days were on the horizon. The New England Patriots, a team Miami had dominated in 1972, were coming to town.
The 1973 Miami Dolphins were now 1-1.

Im a Tanny supporter, but i think i had him down for 28/12 last year, 4k yards. Nailed it! Seriously though, its also not about the caliber player. By all intents and purposes, Hartline coming off back to back 1k seasons, Wallace’s potential production numbers, and the plus side Gibson showed before gettn ghurt last year was enough to be optimistic.
That said, i think you point to me is that doesnt matter how they look on paper, the player still has to live up to expectations and to that you are right, they didnt. Its a hindsight and some prefer to be optimistic and wrong than pessimistic and pleasantly surprised.
FTR though i dont count you as a Debby downer, you are harsh and hold the players accountable for failures. You dont expect them to fail or succeed you just wait to see what they will do. I think thats a very fair perspective, and i know i tend to lean at least more tot he side of optimistic about the team, which does infuriate a lot as well lol. Still i may not be able to predict if we play or not but i like the vibe surrounding the coaches, players, etc this year much better than last year and thats good enough for me to feel regardless of W-L totale we should play better as a team.

Except I was one of those people saying positive things about our WRs. So, if I was belittling the opinion, I was doing it to myself too. My point was more about how opinions in the preseason can turn out to be very different after the season. Right or wrong. And, the positivity that tends to color our opinions in the preseason.

I seem to be getting misquoted a lot today. I never once claimed Jake long couldn’t be a pro bowler at LT. I simply said I thought he would be a better RT. And, I wanted to, you know, actually see him play in the NFL before I said he was or wasn’t anything. And, my prediction of how his career would play out was actually right on point. I was, also, not happy about it because I wanted him to be our starting LT for 15 years and play at a pro bowl level.
You said he’d be a good LT but a pro bowl RT. Now you’re saying you knew he’d get a rash of injuries and have his career shortened? Seriously? I don’t remember anyone predicting that.
I know Albert has already had to back Omar down once when asking questions. He said he has a hitch in his stride, maybe he was lying to cover he still has a little ways to go, maybe Omar is just trying to get clicks. I am not sure but you dont hear a lot of the other pundits calling it out so im going to err on the side of most likely, which is Omar is a hack.
So now Omar likes Tannehill and has always known he will be great just as Omar has always said. LOL.
Cameron has become the token white guy to dislike now. Cameron is pretty direct in his medi interviews (actually reminds me a lot of Hartline’s interviews) maybe he pised Omar off lol.

Actually, yes, I did say that because of his limited athleticism that once the injuries started mounting that his play would diminish, and he would struggle at LT…where athleticism is essential. And I said that early on in his career. And, we will never know if he could’ve been a pro bowl player at RT….where his lack of elite athleticism wouldn’t have been as big an issue… for a decade because he didn’t play there.
Don’t you think the RT thing has changed with the heavy passing game now? I don’t view it the same way anymore. – power side, run blocker.

Pro Athletes will never get bitching about making millions is not a concept most average people understand. They really should internalize their malcontent over making 13 million.
agreed. On one hand I think he should look at his own up bringing and just be happy with what he has now. But on the other, I also think he should get what he deserves. The owners make enough money to short change these athletes.

RT/LT today are almost identical, especially in a ZBS. I think having a person who naturally plays that side is important and probably more so than a lot here do, but i think the skill set needed is pretty similar now.

All the tweets about Tannehill being sharp are killing me. What did they think he was? He is in his 4th season. He finished last year with a 90+ QBR. He completed over 2/3 his passes last season. Better than 2-1 TD to int ratio. One of the lowest ratios of interceptable passes last season. It’s some kind of surprise that he looks really sharp now?
He’s still very unproven to the trained eye.

He’s not going to go out there an fumble snaps like Manziel

I thought we had good WR’s last year. I liked Wallace, and I thought he could have had a great year. In many ways he did, until the end of the season. This year I think we’re in good shape at WR, with Landry coming back, Stills and Jennings, and I think Parker is gravy until he develops.

So in the news today the Pets cancelled their final day of minicamp? Brilliant move on their part, giving the players a break after outstanding OTAs….meanwhile in South Florida, the Miami Dolphins continue to make questionable decisions as they inexplicably cancelled their final day of minicamp…
until they win a superbowl every decision will be questioned. That’s the nature of this business.

We’ve seen some of that. Painted lawns, dry landscapes and artificial turf are becoming the new rage this year.
Yep in Cali. I was watching flip show a few months back and a lot of them are having their lawns re-sodded with realistic looking artificial turf, never has to be watered, weeded or mowed, occasionally has to have some touch up painting.
But don’t walk on it in the summer, or it will burn your feet.

Good point of view on where a player like Arthur Lynch is at. We sometimes forget what obstacles young players like him have to overcome when they miss time as a rookie and have to kind of start over in their 2nd season. He seems like the type of guy that it won’t be from a lack of effort. He reminds me of Tripp on the other side of the ball.

it is, i have a few clients who are in the pool cleaning/service business. when the market fell they started doing that for some realtors who had hundreds of foreclosed homes on the market. they would paint the lawns to make them look more appealing.

It doesn’t always take a certain amount of TD passes. But scoring is the key. Play well in all three phases and we’ll be in the playoffs.

I’m NOT hung over …. anymore. 🙂 I’m in Arlington conducting a one week workshop so Monday and today were kind of ‘tough’ to get through.
My 16 yr old daughter asked why this was so important (Dubs win)… I told her if she has to wait as long as I have, she will be 56 yrs old the next championship. I think it freaked me out more than her. Watching the trophy presentation and locker room celebration was so surreal.
…also agreed with some of you above about post game coverage…. it was like: “LeBron loses… not to take anything away from the other team, whoever they were”

I was in Home Depot today and a Cleveland fan was playing hater (was wearing my Dubs shirt of course) He kept talking and talking and talking. Man I am watching “Human Universe” on Science Chanel with Brian Cox (the British professor not the exLB / Coach) and he is talking about the Rosetta Probe which Nasa launched at and landed on a commit, and I am thinking holey shit those are some smart motherfuckers. They basically aimed at a spot where the commit was going to be 10+ years in the future while exactly calculating ever variable needed to hit a bullet with another bullet 5 million miles away and 10 years in the future……WOW!

Jahn, when Curry and Co. start shooting the shit out of the ball it’s over. I’m not a big NBA fan at all but I like championship sports. The Warriors play a fun style of ball. They remind me of the Spurs who have won a lot. I hate the super star NBA player because they make that guy the king and have special rules for him. That’s been going on for a long time.

I know during the off-season it’s easy to get caught up in projection and positive speculation, but don’t you think this year feels different? And one of the reasons is Tannehill is a very talented and athletic guy who can do so much more than most QBs we’ve had in the past. He’s in his 4th season, got the big contract, it’s his team. Let’s see how he handles it. We haven’t had this since Marino. The guy!

(by that point it was well past the point of possibility anyway) We were moving my brother’s shit from Hollywood, FL to San Diego, CA on a road tip. All the positive thinking is fine and dandy, but it means nothing and doesn’t necessarily reflect how this team will perform. And, fans(me) should be able to voice a different opinion w/o being called a negative fan or whatever.

Talk in the off season is just that…talk. All that matters is what happens in real games. This team hasn’t earned my trust. How could they before a single game has been played? I don’t think being cautiously optimistic or even pessimistic is unrealistic with this team. Or is something anyone should be ridiculed for.

Lol. Good point on spending that much time in a small, confined space with others. but then I grew up with 6 siblings and went on way too many trips with all of us in a Ford LTD. So, maybe I began my astronaut training early and didn’t know it.
Ugh, sounds worse than long trips with my 3 siblings in our station wagon. No AC and 13 hours trying to find what patience meant.
I can relate to both of you. Now be the younger brother who always had to ride in the middle seat.
Sometimes when I was young we would take a family of 8 camping in a 6 person cabover truck camper. 3 people in the cab with Dad(sometimes 4) and no AC whatsoever.
My dad still doesn’t care about AC. Has fans at home too. I can’t do that. I have AC with everything but do still just use the window while driving(except with the missus)

Thank you so much for your congratulations. Imagine a life where your favorite pro teams in all 3 major sports have one a single championship combined (that you’ve seen, in fact, the fins, A’s and Warriors were all winning championships when I was 1, 2 and 3, I just don’t remember it!) and it helps to put my feelings in perspective. My teams haven’t been real good to me for a very long time, and it’s so gratifying to see the loyalty rewarded. It’s Ok to be hopeful about your teams, the Warriors just proved it for me.

Randy, you’re comments today didn’t even stand out to me. This will always happen. Someone who’s optimistic/pessimistic will say something that bothers someone who’s pessimistic/optimistic and than it’ll happen a few more times. Than the pessimistic/optimistic person will tell the optimistic/pessimistic person what he/she thinks and pessimistic optimistic will say but here’s what I think!
Occasionally optimistic/pessimistic will think pessimistic/optimistic person was out of line, and pessimistic/optimistic will think that’s out of line.
In then end, everyone comes back, for the most part.
