FOLLOWING PERFECTION: THE 1973 MIAMI DOLPHINS – GAME 4

dolphins 73

By: Randy Campbell (Old Dolfan)

New York Jets @ Miami Dolphins,  Oct. 7, 1973

The New York Jets-Miami Dolphins rivalry had a nasty edge to it right from the get-go.  This was especially true for those games played in the historic Orange Bowl.  Jet fans typically outnumbered Dolphin fans in the pre-Shula days, mostly because of all the ex-New Yorkers who migrated to Florida in the 1950’s, ’60’s and, later, in the 1970’s.

The very first game in this bitter rivalry took place in early September of 1966.  It was Miami’s second official game of their existence.  New York scored early and often, taking a 19-0 lead into the final quarter.  By this time, Jet fans insults had led to dozens of fights and many arrests.

Miami returned a Namath interception for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.  Then QB Rick Norton hit TE Dave Kocourek with a 47-yard touchdown bomb and the Dolphins trailed only 19-14 to the delight of beleagured Miami fans.  Eventually, the Jets stopped Miami’s final drive, preserving an unimpressive win over an AFL expansion team.  More fights followed during the Jet fans post-game celebration.  Miami mayor Robert King High called Jets fans behavior “inexcusable.”  The rivalry “was on!”

mercury_morris_1972_01_19 The misery continued as Namath and the Jets swept the first eight games in this rivalry, most by lopsided scores.  But, in 1970, new head coach Don Shula promised things would be different.  Indeed, they were. Under Shula, the Dolphins won five of the next six contests, including two classic narrow victories during the 1972 season.  The second win against New York in 1972 was, and IS, considered one of the greatest games ever played in the historic Orange Bowl!  The Dolphins would go on from this come from behind 28-24 victory to complete the NFL’s one and only Perfect Season!

As the 1973 season dawned, Jet fans obsessed on one thing. –REVENGE against the Dolphins!  But that would have to wait.  The Jets lost their opening game at Green   Bay.  Then, the first half of their next game against Baltimore, Namath suffered a serious knee injury.  It would cause him to miss about half of the 1972 season.

Trailing 10-3 at halftime, back-up Jets QB Al Woodall took control of the New York offense.  Two Woodall touchdown passes plus a FG by Bobby Howfield gave the Jets a 20-10 lead.  The Jets’ defense did the rest, returning two Bert Jones interceptions for “pick-six” touchdowns.  The Jets had crushed Baltimore 34-10 without Joe Namath for most of the game.  Would Al Woodall become the next Earl Morrall?  Woodall, a 2nd round pick in the ’69 draft out of Duke, had seen limited action in his first four seasons behind Namath.

Next for New York was a trip to Buffalo to play O.J. Simpson and his powerful Bills’ team.  Could Woodall maintain the hot hand and produce another upset?  Three John Leypoldt field goals gave Buffalo a 9-0 lead early in the 4th quarter.  But Woodall connected on a 34-yard bomb to speedy Jerome Barkum, narrowing Buffalo’s lead to just two points.  New York was unable to score again, thus Buffalo escaped with a 9-7 win that was in doubt until the games’ final play.

Even without Namath, Don Shula knew these Jets were a dangerous team.  New York’s top two runners, Emerson Boozer and big John Riggins, were among the best duos in the NFL.  Wide receiver Eddie Bell was having a solid season.  And tight ends Richard Caster and Jerome Barkum had the speed to go deep.  Defensively, the Jets had allowed just 36 points total during their first three games.

Shula believed the key to beating the Jets rested on two factors.  First, the Dolphins offense had to get off to a fast start.  His plan was to open up the passing offenseto offset the Jets strong run defense.  Secondly, he believed a strong pass rush against Woodall would pay huge dividends.  Woodall lacked Namath’s quick release.  And he wasn’t a threat to run the ball.  So Miami’s defensive ends were told to pin their ears back.  Shula’s plan worked to perfection.

Last week Mercury Morris ran for a Dolphins’ record 197 yards.  On the first play of Mercury movin inthis game, Morris bolted for 25 yards in the blink of an eye!  Griese followed with a 17-yard completion to Jim Kiick and the Dolphins were already in Jets’ territory.  Runs by Morris, Kiick and Csonka moved the ball to the three yard line.  Morris scooted the final three yards putting the Dolphins ahead 7-0.

Defensive captain Nick Buoniconti recovered a Jets’ fumble on their next series.  BriscoeMorris sprinted around end for 9 yards.  Griese hit Marlin Briscoe for 15 yards.  Two plays later Bob Griese threw a low pass to Briscoe who laid out to make a sensational diving catch for another touchdown!  14-0, Dolphins, after the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins’ pass rush was totally intimidating Al Woodall.  Defensive end Bill Sttanfill constantly hounded the Jets quarterback.  By games’ end, Stanfill had recorded FIVE sacks and close to a dozen tackles.  He was, in a word, unstoppable!

Griese, Briscoe and Paul Warfield continued to shred the Jets’ secondary in the second quarter.  A long drive produced a 19-yard FG by Yepremian.  Then, just before halftime, Griese tossed a 3-yard TD pass to Warfield, making the score a shocking 24-0 at intermission!  The usually noisy and profane Jets fans were stone quiet.

Shula saw no reason to let-up on the passing game in the third quarter.  A warfield, morris, shulalong 40-yard bomb, Griese to Warfield, turned this game into an absolute (and unexpected) blowout.  The Dolphins led 31-0 heading into the final quarter.

By this time everyone agreed that Al Woodall was NOT the next Earl Morrall.  Woodall was unceremoniously yanked after completing just 4 of 15 passes for 45 yards and two interceptions.  Woodall’s back-up, Bill Demory, completed 2 of 5 passes and led the Jets to a field goal in the final moments of this lopsided 31-3 Dolphins’ victory.

And what of the REAL Earl Morrall?  He entered the game in the fourth quarter and completed 2 of 4 passes for 46 yards, 1 yard more than Woodall achieved in over three quarters.

On the day, Miami passed for 219 yards and 3 touchdowns, a season’s high at that point.  They also ran for 151 yards and another TD against a Jets’ defense that previously had yielded only 12 points per game.

Shula praised his offense, his defense and his special teams’ play.  “It was our best effort of the year so far,” said the smiling Don of Miami.

In the Jets’ locker room a somber Weeb Ewbank said “We were totally outclassed today.  This Dolphin team may be even better than the ’72 team.”

The 1973 Miami Dolphins were now 3-1.  And they had just crushed the hated New York Jets, a thought that was foremost in my mind as I drove back home to West Palm Beach to continue my celebration!

MY THANKS to Brian and Wyoming (and Piggy from the prior page) for your kind comments on game #4 of FOLLOWING PERFECTION. But my 2 biggest “Thank Yous” go to MISS GIGI for all her help when this series was first run in 2014 and to HERDFAN for doing a lot more work digging up old photos and other things that gloss-up this modest effort. A big percentage of the credit goes to them!!!
    ————————
NOTE that passing for 219 yards against the Jets marked a serious change in strategy at this stage of the Dolphins two year run to glory. Shula’s flexibility, his willingness to change strategies depending on the game circumstances, made him both GREAT and UNPREDICTABLE. This trait would come in handy when, during the David Woodley era, Shula took an under talented offense all the way to Super Bowl XVII. That was, in the view of many observers, Shula’s greatest coaching achievement. – – Have a great day, Dolfans everywhere as you bask in the glory of a Jets butt-kicking, 1973 style!!

Great write OD……and nothing like a win against the Jets.

“I’m working on a lot of things, but mostly speed. I recently started doing Pilates, which made my body feel way better. It’s improving things that might not have been perfect before, like glute activation. That, along with the work I’ve done here in Fort Lauderdale at Pete Bommarito’s facility, has helped me attain a new level of speed and explosiveness at OTA’s, which was recognized by my coaches and teammates. ”

Sounds like Jarvis Landry ain’t resting on his great season…….hope he’s right on that increased speed and explosiveness.

    Good stuff on Landry Stanger.

I think we’re going to have the best WR corp in the NFL this year and Tannehill is going to have a huge year. We’re also going to have a top 10 offense, and top 10 defense…maybe even top 5 for one or both. All the stars are aligning. OL is still the only major question IMHO…and it’s as much because of depth and the ability to withstand another injury to a tackle as it is the Guard position IMHO.

If the OL falls apart again (kind of unprecedented for a Benton coached team) my offense prediction may not come true…but I think Tannehill is going to bust out either way.

Cheers all! Hope the weathers nice up there Randy!

Year in and year out, and as one of you, who has preached patience and persistence as a fan in support of our boys, I genuinely identify my journey as a Warrior fan with my journey as a Fin Fan.

This is 3 minutes in a slow time of the season, but as a fin fan, it’s a reminder of what the payoff for all that patience and persistence can bring. I’ve seen the future for us as fin fans this year, and I believe it’s a bright one. Loyalty is my absolute favorite fan trait. Whether it’s myself who sees everything through Orange and Aqua lenses or Bat who see’s little other than failure and calamity, we all have one thing in common…loyalty to the fins.

If you don’t hate the Golden State Warriors, and especially if you pulled for them this post season, this, as a fin fan, is 3 minutes well worth watching. Cheers!

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I got to witness a little episode of road rage this morning . . . I’m on Route 9 in my area, which is a heavily driven road, and coming to a red light, about the 6th or 7th car before the light in the middle lane of 3. I see the 3rd car at the light first stop, and then put the car in park. Then this big black guy gets out of his car, not big as in 6’6″, more like 5’11” 280 +, and he runs to the car immediately in front of him, and approaches the drivers side, and the driver opens the door, but all I see is the big guy punching and pushing the driver, can’t see the driver. Then at some point, the light turns green, but even the first cars at the light don’t go, because they’re all watching the fight. I get to see a glimpse of the driver as he momentarily steps out, but the big guy pushes him back in the car and continues to close range punch him. Then the passenger side of the guy getting his asked kicked opens up, and a tall skinny guy runs over to help his friend, but the white skinny dude is outweighed by more than a 100 lbs, and the black guy just shrugs him off. Then the skinny dude pops the trunk, and gets a tire iron, and threatens the black to guy to leave his friend alone. The black guy doesn’t appear to be fazed, and then the white guy hits the black guy in his massive chest, and the black guy laughs, and pushes him away, and the decides he’s going to get back into his car. Now, the swollen faced driver steps out and walks after the guy who is about to get into his car and starts taunting him, which at the time I thought was totally ridiculous as it was never a fight, more a guy punching a heavy bag. Then finally a crease opened as cars finally started moving, and I left. Road rage is so stupid, and if the cops came, not only does the likely antagonist (the white guy) get a beating, but I’d bet he gets a ticket too.

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, the Mets will just say Conforto isn’t ready. Even though outside of the pitching, most of the team isn’t ready. What do you have to lose? LOL

Zach Thomas was an after thought in the 1996 NFL Draft. Selected 154th overall in the fifth round, Thomas was considered too small to be an NFL caliber linebacker.

Thomas responded to those claims with a 12-year, seven-Pro Bowl, over 1,000-tackle career. He’s 14th in team history in interceptions, 17th in sacks, and first in interceptions returned for touchdowns.

Yes, Zach Thomas has returned the most interceptions for touchdowns in team history. More than Jake Scott, Dick Anderson, Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain.

  33. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Exactly, that’s why I bring up Conforto. The guy is tearing it up at AA, so at least he’s hitting somewhere. Why bring up another recycled failure like Nieuwenhuis, when you bring in a guy with some confidence and skill.

  34. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No doubt about the road rage. Nothing to gain by it all, even if you did kick someone’s ass, the trouble you could get for it could not be worth it.

Not to downplay the accomplishment, but a LB generally intercepts screen passes with no one to stop him on the way to the end zone or in middle of the field with few but fat asses to hawk him down, so id expect this stat to be higher for a LB’er with a decent number of ints.

PICKED-UP Phil Steele’s 2015 College Football Preview magazine, which hit the stands nationwide today. It is BY FAR the best magazine of its type. The research and information is mind-boggling!! –And, best of all, there’s GOOD NEWS for some of the regular contributors on this site. –FIRST, Miss Gigi’s Hurricanes are predicted by Steele to be THE MOST IMPROVED TEAM IN DIVISION ONE FOOTBALL THIS SEASON and a legitimate contender for the ACC crown. He ranks them #21 in the nation for 2015.
SECOND, Steele has good news for HERD’s Marshall team. Last year Marshall lost only one game (67 to 66) and won their bowl game 52-23 over Northern Illinois. They ended up 23rd in the final poll. Steele has them finishing #31 this season, culminating in yet another bowl game appearance.
THIRD, Steele even has some good news for my Florida Atlantic Owls (who only won 3 games last year, losing 4 games in the last minute of the game, or in overtime). Steele says FAU will win more games this year, due in no small part to the 30th ranked QB in Division One football, Jacquez Johnson, and an improved offensive line. FAU hosts Miami September 12, the second weekend of the season. An FAU alum told me that game is “virtually sold out.”

Yup! The talk about a trade is futile IMO. There aren’t any big bats on the trading block right now, and the ones who are would not make much of a difference. The bottom line is we just need to start hitting.

  60. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bri

Not futile really. You have to start somewhere. I’d trade 3 pitchers, 1 for a solid bat, and the other 2 for a really good bat. Someone will be available, you have to stay on top of it. I’d trade Colon, Niese and one of the young pitchers, or we can’t compete this year. I suppose we could always say “Next year”, but if you want to make it into the playoffs, you need 2 bats. That would change the dynamic enough to get the other guys hitting.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I’m okay with Colon or Niese, but no way am I trading any of the young guns. I’d be okay with missing the playoffs this year if that’s what it takes to develop some of the younger talent in the minors. The thing about a trade is who are we going to get, and where do we put him? Lagares and Granderson are set in the OF, Duda at 1st, Wright at 3rd, we don’t need a catcher, so that leaves only 3 postions we could possibly upgrade: SS 2B, and LF. Cuddyer has a year remaining on his deal, Herrera is potentially the future 2B, and now that Syndegaard and Matz have been promoted, SS is a position that has high ranking prospects for us.The current roster needs to start hitting.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

  62. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Here’s a tidbit of true history that I find compelling.

George Wallace stood in the doorway of an Alabama school in a vein effort of keeping it segregated. He was the leader of the segregation movement in the south and his most prominent backer in his run for governor of Alabama was none other then the founder of Nascar, Bill France.

After the white supremacist murdered 9 people having bible study in the church in South Carolina, Brian France, Bill’s grandson and current Nascar CEO said he wanted the Confederate Flag banned from Nascar events.

“We want to go as far as we can to eliminate the presence of that flag … I personally find it an offensive symbol, so there is no daylight how we feel about it and our sensitivity to others who feel the same way. We’re working with the industry to see how far we can go to get that flag to be disassociated entirely from our events.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Grandson of Ralph Earnhardt, one of Bill France’s most prominnent original circuit drivers backed him:
“I think it’s offensive to an entire race,” Earnhardt said. “It belongs in the history books and that’s about it.”

When it’s time, it’s time. Some people will always fear change no matter what. I loved Dukes of Hazzard, and see it as collateral damage in a much more important issue. There is no way in hell I let my childhood fantasies of Daisy Duke cloud my judgement on this far more meaningful issue. FFS, I never even knew I had a channel called “TV Land”.

The confederate flag has been misappropriated by racists just as the swastika has. I agree with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Brian France.

But I don’t feel the need to censor it any more than I feel he need to pull raiders of the lost ark from airing bc there are nazi flags in it

It’s totally different to not want the flag as your symbol or the symbol of a state than it is to completely obliterate its existence in any representation.

Removing it as South Carolina flag (which is IMO the choice for South Carolina to make) is removing a negative symbol to many (including South Carolina residents) from you state – so it makes sense to me

Removing it from TV as if it never accepted is just censorship as if it never existed and unacceptable. we cannot continue to remove things from TV bc they are not outdated, less acceptable or offensive to people – that undermines free speech, the core value of our country

      • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Is a privately owned television station not allowed to determine it’s programming based on it’s own criteria? If we were in Court arguing about the right of viewers to sue TV Land based on a 1st Amendment violation, it would be dismissed

But that is not what I am talking about at all

Anyone can censor: a gov’t agency or a anyone in the private sector. I purposely didn’t say TV Land violated the 1st amendment to avoid this hypertechnical argument – which is of course, completely accurate but has nothing to do with our cultural values as a country, which IMO flow from the 1st amendment.

the constitution, particularly the bill of rights, represents the core values of the foundation of our country. And the first amendment is the first one for a reason – bc it matters the most.

I happen to think a private company which censors something b/c it offends people undermines everything this Country is built on, so I despise it. I am not arguing that a private entity has a right to do it or not – just that they are spitting on our forefathers dreams by doing it, and therefore should go fuck themselves…lol

BTW, even the gov’t legally censors. The FCC is a good example of that. And if I had my way the FCC would not exist either and George Carlin would have been allowed to say whatever the fuck he wanted and we would have grown up on his comedy shows instead of reruns of the Dukes of Hazard which was appearantly so much more offensive than any of the words Carlin was never permitted to broadcast

but the wind didn;t blow that way in the 80s, so today the confederate flag is the new boogeyman under your bed and no one will be allowed to look under their bed so that they spared the unquestionable harm that will follow when they are offended which appears to be what our society wishes was the first amendment: “No one should be offended ever”. That would have been a great way to start the constitution.

I don’t know what goes on in schools, but my FCC example should cover that. Just b/c it happens doesn’t mean I agree with it. And just bc it happens doesn’t mean it is right. And I don;t think some one should have to discuss all wrongs to prove a point either.

  72. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

And BTW the smoking commercials are a pretty good example of why the distinction between the private sector and the public sector is not always so clear

Even though they are aired on privately owned companies
the organization that produces them is a nonprofit an excused from paying taxes
and the private entity channel which airs them probably (just a guess) gets a tax break because they air them without a fee (or the fee is paid by the govt) instead of selling the time for those commercials to a private owned company

So the gov’t certainly has influence over those particular commercials being aired instead of FFRob getting the T&A he deserves!

  73. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Piggy,

Great post. I also despise the voluntary censorship. It definitely falls under a slippery slope argument and limits the quality of experiences we get to voluntarily experience. Sure, the Dukes was a bad show but it was pretty inoffensive and easily not seen since it was now shown on TVLand.

The overriding push to make individual rights and desires sacrosanct is impossible in a society. There has to be some give and take in everything…not this absolutist garbage. The media already has way too much influence on our society that it’s scary when they decide to eliminate something.

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, being offended by something is one thing, people flying a symbol that represents the hatred of certain groups of people is another. Some Christians are offended that gay people can get married because it goes against their faith and the sanctity of marriage. But gay people getting married doesn’t hurt anyone nor does it stand for hatred, it’s a vow of love. I find there is a big difference in being offended and outright hated because of who a person is. Hatred leads to violence as we’ve seen plenty of times.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don;t care for the confederate flag
      I don;t get it actually

So I don;t think you are wrong, except that I think it doesn’t not symbolize hate to a lot of people who embrace it – but I don’t think that matters so much

where I disagree with you is your conclusion that hatred leads to violence
sometimes hatred just leads to hate
      sometimes it leads to nothing
      violence is violence

symbols don;t necessarily cause violence, albeit I think they demonstrate some sort of rallying ideal for people who act out violently

but you don;t have to look at causation
and I don’t think you should to make decisions on what people should see and hear

free will is something we have to treat with greater importance than the remote possibility that symbols cause violence

If everything you say is right
then I ask you to consider what is more important
the fact that these symbols may cause violence OR the preservation of our freedom to see and hear these symbols

I would argue that it is more important to preserve every individuals rights to see or hear whatever they want to see or hear

having a voice and permitting people to hear that voice is a foundational principal of this country, even when you disagree with the content

  84. bat's avatar bat says:

Tim ..Government was intended to be made up of citizens just like us. There was never meant to be any such thing as a career politician. The people who are supposed to be “public servants” have become “public rulers”. They operate above the law and try to seize more and more power over us. A bunch of inept, corrupt jackasses issuing mandates and dictates about things they know nothing about.

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, symbols do mean something or we wouldn’t have them. To me it’s a wink wink communication in many instances. Ultimately banning a flag on public property isn’t going to end hate, but it does show a basic respect towards groups of people who aren’t just offended, but have been violated under the premise of what it stands for. I don’t think any of us would be comfortable driving down a street with Nazi flags flying and hung on buildings. What would those flags stand for?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yeah but going from symbols to violence is not like going to from A to B, its like going from A to W and there are a lot of intervening alphabets…lol

      Its not a clean causation

and it cannot be said to be just by the mere fact that we can all see/hear and experience these symbols will cause us to act violently and really only a small percentage of people (probably less than .000000000000000000000000000000001%) actually do act violently

That kid who shot up that church had real psychological issues
if he didn’t gravitate to hatred towards black people it probably would have been another group

albeit, I concede that the nazi flag or a symbol does give people who feel that way a rallying symbol and that probably helps create the vehicle that leads to hateful acts

there is reasonable concerns when you are talking about symbols or speech for that matter that are meant to oppress a group of people

I have no problem with the dialogue about why its bad
but I think when TV Land removes it from a show that sort of innocently displayed it on a car, it crosses the line to a bigger problem in our society and that is the fear of being offended at the expense of free speech

and honestly I do not think if we remove the existence of the confederate flag from being able to be seen anywhere, we have done anything to stop racism

Sorry the arguments defending that flag are weak but typical.

wow, you are being a little rough on yourself there big guy.

and that isnt what you said earlier. earlier you said a hate group used the flag as its symbol. all i said is if that is the reason for taking it down then shouldnt they take down everything the hate group uses.

The mass removal of something just because it offends someone just leads to problems. Sure, the Confederate flag shouldn’t be on government property. But, the push is much greater than that. What s the next thing we will overreact to? Isn’t this just focusing hate onto another group?

for the most part, I have been talking about the removal of the Dukes of Hazard from TV Land
So I don;t think we disagree

but I also don;t like the fact that we are associated what that idiot kid did with slavery
I don;t think slavery had anything to do with a psychological disorder
I don;t think racism in today’s society is a result of a psychological disorder – and for the record, I have probably argued more than anyone else here about how prevalent racism is today

but that has nothing to do with crazy IMO
what that kid was an act of a crazy man IMO
And people (at least on TV and in debates) have gravtiated to something they already had a problem with in response to what he did – so I am bothered by that, bc IMO its not really a solution to either problem

When white town leaders and other citizens got together in the 50’s and 60’s in the deep south, put on their white robes and hoods, headed out into the night and lynched black people, what was going on there? Just good ole southern pride? That kid said he was killing those innocent people in the church for the same reasons those white town leaders and citizens did it. So why separate the two? The result was the same.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

it wasn;t good ole southern pride
        it was racism

and while the kid was racist , it was still a pretty random act of violence

just bc the result is the same doesn’t mean they are the same

If you really want to stop something, you have to know why it occurs
and grouping those things together bc they are equally ugly won;t do that

in one scenario the society around people accepted it
but in the 2nd, it did not and that kid still murdered people

        its a much different psychology
